LIFE ONLINE and [open source]

Life Online New gallery opening 30 March 2012 Life Online is the world’s first gallery to explore the social, technological, and cultural impact of the internet and the web. The gallery, both an online resource and physical space, will reflect and interact with the story of the internet and the web, from the very first email, to the rise of home computing and the non-stop evolution of social and technological communication. Play interactive games, share online stories and immerse yourself in the true internet story.

[open source] Is the internet you know under threat? March 2012 – February 2013 Life Online Exhibition Space The exhibition launching Life Online’s dedicated new exhibition space is entitled [open source] Is the internet you know under threat? Celebrating the online culture of sharing, collaboration, co-creation and openness, the exhibition also reflects on the current threat to net neutrality and how this could signify the end of the open source nature of the internet. This inaugural exhibition will include commissioned works by internationallyrenowned new media artists: Ross Phillips, Thomson and Craighead, Erin Newell and Phil Bird, alongside a project created by Networked as a group of the gallery’s younger artists. [open source] Is the internet you know under threat? will be the first in an annually changing series of Life Online exhibitions. Follow National Media Museum to stay up to date with Life Online

Breakfast with the Artists [open source]

For the launch of Life Online, Buffering has selected three pieces that explore the social, technological and cultural impact of the internet:

Twittamentary 30 March, 6pm Cubby Broccoli Cinema Twittamentary is a unique documentary about the everyday people who use Twitter. The movie is also a social media experiment which fuses together a documentary with real time social media interaction; viewers can interact with the cast and production team, in real-time. We hope to be joined by the director, Siok Siok, via Skype following the screening.

30 March 2012 10am – 12pm Cubby Broccoli Cinema

PressPausePlay

Grab a coffee and join the artists from the Life Online exhibition [open source]. Digital artists Thomson and Craighead, Ross Philips, Erin Newell and Phil Bird will be in conversation with curators Sarah Crowther and Tom Woolley. David Smith, the Museum’s Youth Engagement Officer, will also talk about working with a group of young people to produce a new artwork for the gallery. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and hear how the artists approached the concept of open source culture before heading to the gallery for an interactive visit.

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way. But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world’s most influential creators of the digital era.

This event is free but tickets will need to be pre-booked
