TAKE NOTE

A

lthough mostly viewed as the end to the final weekend of summer, Labor Day, Sept. 3, represents much more than a day off work and backyard cookouts. Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on Feb. 21, 1887. During the year four more states—Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York—created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and territories. The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday—a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “the vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker.”

Beat the Heat High-altitude locations offer natural way to cool off in summer

Mount Evans Summit Photo by Jeffrey V. Smith

F

eeling the heat? Go higher! It’s August, and although weather patterns have been less then normal recently, the high country could see some of the warmest temperatures of the year this month. When the heat is on in the mountains, the best solution is to find higher ground to keep cool. The mountain towns of Clear Creek County from Silver Plume to Idaho Springs, thankfully, are at the doorstep of some of the more popular highaltitude destinations in the Front Range. While high-country residents may not be dealing with same extreme temperatures as down in the flatlands, it is nice that when an escape from the heat is needed, the solution is close at hand.

While there are countless ways to get yourself to altitude in the summer, a few of the more popular and accessible places are detailed here. Find a place you’ve never been or get inspired to look for relief some place all your own. Once you’ve gone higher, hiking, biking, climbing, sight-seeing, fishing, driving and most other activities are all more enjoyable in the crisp, cool, thin air. LOVELAND PASS/ARAPAHOE BASIN

Loveland Pass along U.S. 6 offers several high-altitude hikes above treeline to nearby mountain summits and alpine lakes. Just over the county line is Arapahoe Basin ski area, which offers summer activities including hiking, disc golf, live music on Saturday afternoons, yoga on Sundays and full-service restaurant and bar. Take the Black Mountain Express lift to mid-mountain to discover unparalleled vistas of the Continental Divide, explore the upper mountain, eat lunch at Black Mountain Lodge and hike around the Argentine-North Fork Trail. Take the lift back down or hike back to the Mountain Goat Plaza base area. Summer activities remain open through Sept. 2. GUANELLA PASS SCENIC BYWAY

The Guanella Pass Scenic Byway is a great introduction to Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Climbing from Georgetown to above timberline, the byway takes in views of snow-capped peaks and alpine tundra before descending into cool groves of aspen and pine. This paved road climbs the steep divide between the South Platte and Clear Creek watersheds. The road crests well above timberline and is flanked by Mounts Bierstadt and Evans. Hikes to these 14ers, among other great routes, are easily accessible from the byway. MOUNT EVANS SCENIC BYWAY The Mount Evans Scenic Byway, the highest paved road in the U.S., climbs more than 7,000 feet in 28 miles, reaching an altitude of 14,130 feet. At the summit, spectacular 360-degree views of the Continental Divide and Front Range await. This is also one of the best places in Colo-

rado to catch a glimpse of mountain goats and bighorn sheep. Hiking trails, fishing lakes and other activities are also easily done. The byway can be reached via Interstate 70 exit 240 in Idaho Springs. The top five mile section of road to the Summit of Mount Evans Interpretive Site is scheduled to close for the season, Sept. 4, at Summit Lake. The lower section of the road remains open until Oct. 8, depending on weather conditions. ST. MARY’S GLACIER

St. Mary’s Glacier is located in the Historic Alice Mining District near Idaho Springs at the top of Fall River Road. The community is rich in history and the hike to St. Mary’s Glacier is one of the top tourist destinations in Clear Creek County. The hike to St. Mary’s Lake, located at 10,848 feet, and St. Mary’s Glacier is about 3/4 mile and is a moderate hike over rocky terrain featuring breathtaking scenery and year-round ice field. Explore the community during GlacierFest, Aug. 11 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. BERTHOUD PASS/CONTINENTAL DIVIDE

Berthoud Pass, reached via Hwy. 40, at 11,307 feet features a trailhead located on the Continental Divide. It offers a variety of summer activities including hiking on the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail or hike east to James Peak through the James Peak Wilderness. WINTER PARK SKI AREA

disc golf, horse riding and more. Summer activities are open daily from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. through Sept. 3. Extended hours are offered Fridays and Saturdays until 7 p.m. From Sept. 8-30, activities are available weekends only from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. ARAPAHOE/ROOSEVELT NATIONAL FOREST

The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest encompasses 1.5 million acres and extends north to the Wyoming border, south of I-70 to Mount Evans and west across the Continental Divide to the Williams Fork area. Trails throughout the forest provide numerous access points to the high elevations. High alpine lakes abound and some of the highest mountain passes can be reached from trail heads all over the Clear Creek County region as well as in nearby Grand and Gilpin counties. JAMES PEAK WILDERNESS

The 17,000-acre James Peak Wilderness is located in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests within Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties. Adjacent to the Continental Divide on the eastern slope, the James Peak Wilderness Area includes several peaks over 13,000 feet and more than a dozen sparkling alpine lakes. Access this area from roads above St. Mary’s Glacier or north of Idaho Springs in Gilpin County. There are, of course countless other locations and ways to reach high-altitude locations. No matter where your prefered destination is located, try to get up to altitude while you can, whether escaping the summer heat or simply getting out into nature, to take advantage of areas that are only accessible a few months of the year.

Memories for Sale Antique show’s founder brings railroad collectables back to Georgetown

T

Bill Knous

16

he Bill Knous Memorial Railroad Antique Show & Sale will attract the attention of collectors from across the country when it’s held at the Georgetown Heritage Center in September, but the event is entirely a local affair. For Sue Knous, who owns Railroad Memories and is producing the event, it’s a return to her roots. Knous has “proudly” offered quality memorabilia through cataloged auction and retail sales for more than 30 years, working alongside her husband, Bill, until he passed away in 2006. She has handled over 40,000 individual pieces from railroads all over the country from advertising, badges, buttons, books, china, silver depot and train collectibles, express, keys and locks, lanterns, marker and switch lamps, passes, brochures, time tables, posters, telegraph and much more. She has sold pieces for as much as $30,000 to as little as $10. And, it all started in Georgetown. After taking a day trip to Georgetown in 1987 for a ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad, Bill and Sue went for a walk around town and noticed a small shop for rent. They went home, made a few calls and rented the storefront to sell collectables. “I have been dealing strictly in antiques from the railroad since 1987,” Knous said. “My late husband and I started Railroad Memories here in Georgetown. [We] had a little shop on Rose Street for three years, and then did our first auction as well. I commuted from Denver and my husband brought our children up on the weekends.” After all these years, Knous finally made the move to Georgetown about a year ago, “and couldn’t be happier.” It helps her daughter Amanda, one of three children, who lives in town and co-owns Coopers on the Creek. The move prompted her to do a trade show locally. CLEAR CREEK

“It would be very exciting as there are many collectors who love early Colorado Narrow Gauge history and relics,” she said. “What a wonderful way to enjoy a weekend and get to see our fellow collectors and meet new people as well. There are dealers and collectors coming from New York, California, Kansas, Iowa, Michigan and other places. People attending will be able to experience first-hand the relics that have survived from the early days of rail travel.” As she wrote in her book Railroadiana II, there is “something magical about a train.” During the Bill Knous Memorial Railroad Antique Show and Sale, Aug. 8 from 9 a.m.4 p.m., dealers and collectors from several states will be showcasing and offering for sale an amazing assortment of pieces including lanterns, locks, keys china pieces from the depot, early timetables and brochures, advertising and much more. Free appraisals will be offered for anyone interested in bringing in a piece for collectors to examine and share expertise. “I think the most important part of this or any collector show is teaching people the importance and value attributed to them,” Knous said. “By attending the show, anyone with a love of the history or antiques will enjoy the many different pieces represented. We are all very happy to offer any guidance for new collectors and hoping to help the next generation to appreciate the wonderful history of these relics.” The 102nd online auction by Railroad Memories will runs at the same time as the show and sale. It will be accessible online and printed catalogs will be available for sale at the show. Admission is $5. Children under 12 are free and must be accompanied by an adult. Visit www.railroadmemories.com, call 303-5695185 or e-mail railroadmemories@gmail.com to learn more about the Georgetown show, online auction and railroad collectables.

Jerky with a heart By Jennifer Pund GEORGETOWN ann and Max McCollom welcome everyone entering Georgetown Jerky & Emporium like a long-time friend, with bright smiles and genuinely enthusiastic greetings. Even dogs are welcome. The couple’s love for meeting and interacting with others led to their decision to open a shop in Georgetown. “We are meeting people from all over the world, all over the country and having a blast. That’s why we did this,” Max said. When the McCollum’s began their retirement years, they decided they were ready to move from Oklahoma to Colorado. “My father instilled in me a great love for these Colorado mountains and we vacationed here almost every summer. It was only natural that a beautiful mountain town would someday be home for us,” Jann said. “We looked at other places, but it was Georgetown that kept calling to us.” The McCollom’s didn’t know what to do, but they knew they wanted to meet and interact with lots of people, provide something worthwhile, share stories, and most of all, have fun. They ultimately settled on selling jerky and decided to give it a try two years ago. Their Georgetown Jerky and Emporium, 509 Rose St., now provides the area’s largest selection of jerky products. Their carefully curated walls of jerky include more than 120 different styles, flavors and heat levels. Options include many flavors of traditional beef, exotic meats—including alligator and kangaroo— and options for special diets including vegan.

We can show you sugar-free jerky, gluten-free jerky and I have one or two without soy,” Max said. “It’s a great protein snack, perfect for hiking, biking, skiing, fishing, and traveling.” Despite the variety, it’s easy to find something to satisfy most costumers, even those that don’t think they like jerky. “We have our jerky wall very well organized so with just a couple of questions we know just where to send you to find your best match,” Jann said. The store is much more than just meat products. “The emporium side stems from our love of all things old, unique and quirky. I like to say that the emporium is anything that makes us smile,” Jann explained. “We have a great selection of small batch Colorado-made sweets, sauces, seasonings, jellies and more.” The McCollom’s have sought out unique Colorado artisans to make items just for them, like their sterling, copper and bronze art jewelry designed by SA Morgan; fun and functional hand-knit accessories by Knit Wit; Summit Lotion Candles, hand-made greeting cards and many more unique gifts. The couple feel like ambassadors for their town and take it seriously. “We interact in a very real and personal way, with our makers and with our customers,” Jann said. “We have many folks that come back to Georgetown, even drive out of their way, just to visit us again. We know them by name and call them friends. Sharing community and sharing our stories is really at the heart of what we do. We just want you to have a good time here.”
