Census questionnaires critical for local funding

Once in a decade, the U.S. Census Bureau does a headcount of every person in the country. This headcount determines how billions of dollars in Federal funding will be allocated, as well as fair representation in the House of Representatives. This is how our counties gets funding for public

services such as healthcare clinics, schools & education, roads, bridges and emergency response for the next 10 years. On average, each person living in Colorado represents $2,300 in federal funding per year. If a family of four is missed, the county would potentially miss out on $92,000 for the

coming decade. Help the community get access to critical public service funding and respond to the Census questionnaire. During March, residents receive an invitation to participate in the Census count. If you normally get your mail delivered to a P.O. box, a Census questionnaire will be hand delivered to your door. If you get your mail delivered, you will be receiving the Census questionnaire in your mailbox. March 12 is the first day people can respond to the Census Questionnaire. It takes about 10 minutes to fill out, and you can respond online, over the phone or mail back answers. Census Day is April 1 nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, respond in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When completing the census, you will include everyone living in your home on April 1, 2020. During May-July, if you still have not responded, a Census worker will come knocking to do an in-person interview. You should fill out the Census questionnaire with the you live in for at least six months and a day during the year. If you live for the majority of the year at a different permanent address in the U.S., fill out the Census questionnaire with that address. If you do not have a permanent address elsewhere, fill out the Census questionnaire with your Colorado address. In this situation, you fill it out for where you were staying on April 1, 2020. There are no questions about citizenship on the 2020 Census form. A citizenship question was proposed for the 2020 form, but the U.S. Supreme Court rejected it on June 26, 2019. On July 12, 2019 the Trump Administration decided to remove the citizenship question from the 2020 Census form. The 2020 Census form will not include any questions asking about the citizenship status of household members. Climbing sites closed to protect nesting eagles BOULDER COUNTY In order to protect nesting golden eagles, the Forest Service has implemented annual area closures in Boulder Canyon, including popular rock climbing spots at Eagle Rock, Blob Rock, Bitty Buttress, and Security Risk. These areas are located along Colorado Highway 119, approximately 1.5 miles east of Boulder Falls. The closures, which will be effective through July 31, prevent human disturbances in a long-established golden eagle nesting territory. www.mmacmonthly.com

Happy Hour, Bihedral, and Riviera will remain open as long as visitors stay out of the closed areas. “By closing this area to visitor use, our area’s resident raptors are able to raise their young in a nesting site free from human activities or disturbances,” Boulder District Ranger Angela Gee said. “Once the birds pick a specific site, we are able to reopen other areas.” The Boulder Ranger District works closely with partners in the Boulder climbing community, including the

Access Fund, to monitor the progress of raptor nesting in the area and keep climbers informed about the importance of providing protected, undisturbed nesting sites for eagles. Federal and state laws prohibit disturbing any nesting bird of prey. Visitors can help protect wildlife by respecting all closures. Signs are posted at key access points into the closed areas. Closure information is available online at local climbing websites and at fs.usda.gov/goto/arp/eagles.

Members include Brook Jordan on drums, Zdenek Gubb on bass, Ryan Dempsey on keys and Mihali on guitar. Folk duo performs Fridays at winery

ESTES PARK Snowy Peaks Winery Lounge, 292 Moraine Ave., hosts a free performance by Great Blue, an “acoustic folk duo with eclectic tastes” March 13, 4-6 p.m. The act returns for additional performances, April 10 and May 15. The pair, who have now returned to live in Colorado, call themselves Great Blue after an observant heron they often find on their kayak trips. Concerts return to ‘cathedral of bluegrass’ LYONS

The annual spring concert series returns to the 300-seat “cathedral of bluegrass,” The Wildflower Pavilion at Planet Bluegrass, 500 W. Main St., in March. The first concert of the year, April 3, 8 p.m., features one of Colorado’s favorite bands, Gasoline LolliALTpops, with special guests BonCOUNTRY nie & Taylor Sims. Tickets are $18. Children 12 and under are always free when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult. Gasoline Lollipops “stitch scraps of American roots music to patches of their own tattered hearts to form an all-new tapestry of bleeding rock n’ roll.” Formed in Colorado, band members hail from different states, musical backgrounds, influences and generations. When mixed, their sound is sweet and explosive, like a Gasoline Lollipop. Fresh out of the legendary Dockside Studio in Louisiana, Gasoline Lollipops have recorded a new album, All The Misery Money Can Buy, which “pursues happiness and the American Dream to the end of the rainbow and chokes on a pot of gold.” The album is a “politically-charged union of soul music and Southern rock.” Bonnie and Taylor Sims are a musical couple

from Texas who now live in Colorado. The two met in 2005 while attending South Plains College in Levelland, TX where they began their life of love and music. Over the last 12 years, they have made a name for themselves as a true Colorado treasure. When they are not playing as the duo, they front the five-piece country rock band Bonnie & The Clydes. The Wildflower bar, which serves beer, wine and hot drinks, opens at 7 p.m. and music starts at 8 p.m. Free parking is available on site. Additional spring concerts in The Wildflower Pavilion will be announced. Visit bluegrass.com/ wildflower to learn more and purchase tickets.

New Orleans ‘supergroup’ returns to mountains Arwen & The Gael

Brewery, band host St. Patrick’s party NEDERLAND Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a party and potluck at Very Nice Brewing Company, 20 Lakeview Dr., March 17, 6-9 p.m., featuring Arwen & The Gael. The brewery opens at 5 p.m. Enjoy up-tempo Irish jigs, reels and hornpipes along with traditional “drinking songs” CELTIC and ballads. The Gael, self-described as Celticeclectic, started as a series of living room jams and began playing as a band at the opening of the Carousel of Happiness in 2010. Laura Fisher on hammered dulcimer, Debbie Smiley on fiddle and Bill Ikler on guitar remain from the original group. Phylleri Ball, who plays accordion and bodhran drum, joined in 2015 after coming to the Celtic sessions The Gael hosts at Very Nice. Vocalist Arwen Ek joined the group after hearing the band play as an opening act at the Caribou Room about three years ago. At an impromptu tryout for the band, it was obvious after she sang a few notes that she had the job. The Gael, without Arwen, performs at the Very Nice every third Thursday of the month. The band has self-titled instrumental CD, and is recording a second album with Arwen. Visit verynicebrewing.com or call 303-258-3770 to learn more. Page 6

NEDERLAND New Orleans Suspects, which began playing funky, “swampified rock and roll” together in 2009 as a pick-up band at the Maple Leaf in New Orleans, perform March 22, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Dr. Funky drumbeats, greasy wailing saxoFUNK phones, razor-sharp guitar playing, rollicking piano and swampy organ swells, strutting bass lines and tight vocal harmonies make this band stand above the rest. Tickets are $15. Comprised of some of the most seasoned, highly respected players in the Crescent City, the act’s

members—with more than a century of touring experience combined—include C.R. Gruver from Outformation and Leo Nocentelli band, Jake Eckert of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Jeff Watkins from James Brown Band and Joss Stone Band, Willie Green of The Neville Brothers and Eric Vogel of North Mississippi Allstars and Fred Wesley band. The band, which attracts large crowds from San Francisco to New York, has released five albums—with a sixth on the way this year—and have established themselves as one of New Orleans’ most talented supergroups. Celtic band plays concert series finale

LYONS Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early at the final show of the High Street Concerts winter music season, March 14, 8-10:30 p.m., at Rogers Hall, 400 High St., featuring Take Down The Door and Dahlby & Nadine. Tickets are $20. Described as a “powerhouse” CELTIC Celtic band, Take Down the Door hearkens the old Irish tradition of taking the door off its hinges and throwing it down on a dirt floor when it was time for a party. Based in Lyons, this high-energy quintet features former Gaelic-Storm fiddler Jessie Burns; renowned bassist, producer and teacher Eric Thorin; Colorado’s foremost Celtic fiddle and guitar duo Adam Agee and Jon Sousa; as well as singer

| MARCH 2020

and percussionist Beth Gadbaw. Take Down the Door hits hard with killer musicianship and masterful arrangements. The band’s foot-stomping, heart-stopping, wide-open sound reflects its name and its natural habitat. Opening the show is Estes-Park-based duo Dahlby & Nadine. Born out of a local bluegrass jam, they discovered they had a similar drive to make music and write songs. Their songwriting contains clever lyrics with irony and metaphor, and their arrangement of old standards is refreshing. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. All seating is general admission. To get the best seats, plan on arriving early. NOTEWORTHY Wood Belly - Man on the Radio

• March 13: The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park (supporting Infamous Stringdusters) • 8 p.m. • March 31: Aggie Theater, Fort Collins (supporting Del McCoury Band) • 8 p.m. • April 17: Fox Theater, Boulder w/ The Herman Clan, Turkeyfoot • 8 p.m.

T

he new 13-track, sophomore album from Wood Belly, Man On The Radio, was released Jan. 31... It was recorded at Swingfingers Studio in Fort Collins with producer Sally Van Meter and engineer Aaron Youngberg, who also worked on Wood Belly’s 2018 debut album Solid Ground. Winners of the Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition in 2018, Wood Belly is the musical collective of Chris Weist on mandolin, Craig Patterson on guitar, Chris Zink on dobro, Aaron McCloskey on banjo and Taylor Shuck on bass. A Wood Belly song has its own lyrical persona and masterful arrangement; rooted in bluegrass tradition and planted solidly in contemporary innovation. The group continues to hone its writing skills with songs that are heartfelt and spirited, crafted with passion, and always entertaining. “We are so fortunate to have worked with Sally Van Meter and Aaron Youngberg,” banjo player Aaron McCloskey said. “Sally has an amazing ear for harmonies, arrangements, and groove, just what you’d expect from a Grammy winner. She’s spent decades in the bluegrass industry as both a player and producer and it was easy for us to trust her experienced ears. In addition to being an excellent engineer, Aaron Youngberg is very talented bluegrass musician. He’s curated an amazing collection of vintage gear and knows just how to use it to get amazing tones.” The album’s first single, “Can’t Get Behind,” featuring special guest fiddler Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters is a tune about the basic need for acceptance. “We’ve all had a moment questioning ourselves, ‘Is it me? Or is it you?’ I relate with these struggles which can be taxing on a person’s mind,” guitarist Craig Patterson said. “It’s sometimes challenging to arrive at acceptance before we process with our own coping mechanism. No matter how we get there, we usually come to realize we always had the answer within – but not before a little self-torment.” Learn more and purchase the album at woodbellymusic.com

and Nunsense by Dan Goggin. The company produced two to five plays a year and says it offered as much fun as education to the town, although it never had its own space. Props and flats were housed in a storage unit and costumes kept in member’s attics. Various local work shops were used on donated time by “generous” crafts people. Plays were staged in a variety of locations including YMCA of the Rockies’ Hempel Auditorium, The American Legion, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, The Village Playhouse, Masonic Lodge, Studio Theater at Peak to Peak American Grill. ESTES PARK The Estes Park Museum’s 1917 Book Club meets again, March 18, 10-11:30 a.m., to explore the local title, Weaving Mountain Memories: Recollections of the Allenspark Area by Lorna Knowlton and second edition edited and expanded by Edie DeWeese. It is BOOK strongly encouraged that particiGROUP pants read the book prior to the program to take part in the discussion. The event, which takes place in the museum’s meeting room, is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Weaving Mountain Memories chronicles the tales, characters, and histories of Allenspark. “The story of Allenspark is one of get-rich quick schemes, fly-by-night schemers, and generations of quirky mountain folk who found their niche and couldn’t leave. The first edition was so popular it went into a second printing a year after its introduction in 1989. The new edition includes further research expanding the information Knowlton collected. In Rocky Mountain National Park’s backyard, Allenspark is a place of unsurpassed beauty and its storied area as entrancing and appealing as its geography.” Museum staff along with Edie DeWeese will facilitate a lively discussion about the title. 1917 Book Club titles can be purchased at the Museum Gift Shop or Macdonald Bookshop. Additionally, the Estes Valley Library will circulate a limited number of copies, holds can be placed on circulating copies if all are checked out. Local author speaks about ‘moving’ memoir LYONS The Lyons Regional Library, 451 4th Ave., hosts an author talk and signing, March 13, 78 p.m., with Dorje Dolma, local author of the moving and inspiring memoir Yak Girl. The book immerses AUTHOR readers in the fascinatTALK ing story of a spirited girl in a remote, undeveloped region of Nepal near the border of Tibet, a place made known to the world in Peter Matthiesen’s The Snow Leopard. Life above 13,000 feet in Upper Dolpo— often called the last paradise because of its breathtaking snow-capped peaks, untouched beauty, and hand-irrigated green pastures—was one of constant risk and harsh survival. Page 12

MMAC monthly

In the 1980s, Dolpo had no running water, electricity, motor vehicles, phones, school, or doctors, other than the local lamas, trained in the use of herbs and prayer. Dolma’s life centered around the care of her numerous younger brothers and sisters and the family’s sheep, goats, and yaks. At age five she began herding and was soon taking the animals high in the mountains, where she fought off predatory wolves and snow leopards. Covering her first ten years, the story takes Dorje from her primitive mountain village to the bewildering city of Kathmandu, and finally to a new home in America, where she receives lifesaving surgery. Margie Patterson is a guest soloist at the Oratorio Society of Estes Park’s “Music of the Masters,” March 14-15.

Concerts highlight classics, masters ESTES PARK The Oratorio Society Estes Park Orchestra performs “Music of the Masters,” a pair of concerts, March 14, 7 p.m., and March 15, 2 p.m., at Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies, 1700 Brodie Ave. These all-orchestral Estes CLASSICAL Park Oratorio Society concerts are free of charge. “It’s familiar classics; classics you know,” OSEP Music Director Robert Howard said. “The idea of familiar classics is classical music that you’ve heard somewhere or heard about, and now here is your chance to get up close and personal with it.” One of those familiar pieces is Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21. “It’s one of about ten piano concertos he wrote while living in what’s called the Mozart House in Vienna,” says Howard. “He lived there from 1784 to 1787 and is one of the very most productive times of his life. He would write the concerto, hire an orchestra, hire a hall, sell tickets and hope to end up with a profit, which he generally did. He was very well known at the time and he was on a roll.” Allenspark’s Margie Patterson is the guest piano soloist on the piece. “She plays so well,” says Howard. “It’s a beautiful composition and it’s so full of optimism. It’s a combination of three entirely engaging movements.” Patterson has more than 25 years teaching experience and is on the faculty of the Rocky Ridge Music Academy. She received her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is a prize winner in the Simone Belsky Competition and is in demand as a soloist and collaborative pianist. “Music of the Masters” also includes George Frideric Handel’s Overture to Julius Caesar and Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8. The Oratorio Society also performs Mendelssohn’s Elijah, May 8, 7 p.m., and May 9, 2 p.m., at the Presbyterian Community Church of the Rockies. The concerts are also free. Additionally, the group’s Peak to Peak Concert Series highlights “Student Performers of Estes’ Teachers,” March 14, 3 p.m. at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, 2000 Ptarmigan Dr. Interested teachers can e-mail Patterson at mkpmusicstudio@gmail.com. For more than 40 years, an unlikely place has been ground zero for the professional development of young singers with their sights set on careers in opera, musical theater and classical music. Central City is typically known for its mining history and casinos. OPERA However, during the summer months it becomes a performing arts mecca, with select rising stars traveling to Colorado for the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program during Central City Opera’s annual Festival. Central City Opera’s 2020 Summer Festival opens on July 4 with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s beloved musical Carousel, followed by Verdi’s thriller, Rigoletto, and Purcell’s bewitching, hourlong opera Dido and Aeneas. Single tickets go on sale April 1. Don’t miss this chance to witness timeless tales in a historic opera house. “There are many places to learn how to sing, but there are few places to learn how to be a performing artist,” Central City Opera General/Artistic Director Pelham G. “Pat” Pearce said. “There’s no greater baptism by fire than singing at 8,500 feet above sea level in Central City Opera’s jewel box theatre.” The program was created by Artistic Director Emeritus John Moriarty in 1978 and named in honor of an endowment gift from the BonfilsStanton Foundation. Out of nearly 1,000 applicants each year, 28 hand-selected singers are cast in Festival productions and receive valuable training in performance and career management. Sessions include audition strategy, resume writing and maintaining a performance portfolio. The rigorous ten-week program also includes daily training in language, movement, stage combat and individual vocal coaching. Trainees earn a salary with benefits and are categorized into two tiers, Apprentice Artist and Studio Artist. Apprentice Artists have solid educational and professional performance back-grounds

and are continuing to develop the vocal and acting skills necessary for a lasting career. Studio Artists are younger singers, often in the process of completing degrees in performance, who have demonstrated potential and are seeking professional experience beyond college or university. Thanks to its unique location and history as the fifth oldest opera company in the country, Central City Opera has built an effective and successful training program perennially sought after, with alumni including notable opera professionals Denyce Graves, Alan Held, Cynthia Lawrence, Margaret Lattimore, Alexandra Loutsion, Michael Mayes, Mary Mills, Emily Pulley, Greg Turay, Latonia Moore, Matthew Polenzani, Jesus Garcia, Chad Shelton, Daniel Belcher and Celena Shafer. The 2019 season marked the inauguration of Michael Baitzer as the Director of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program. A fixture of the Central City Opera music staff since 1999, Michael has been the Festival’s Principal Coach since 2012 and is also the Head of Music Staff at Washington National Opera. An active coach and collaborative pianist, Michael has served on the faculties of many other premier programs, most recently Wolf Trap Opera Company, The Juilliard School and Aspen Music Festival and School. The off-season Central City Opera Box Office is located at 4875 Ward Road in Wheat Ridge. Visit centralcityopera.org to learn more.

worked for the Cultural Arts Council over a number of years and his extensive experience as director spans decades and multiple states, including New York City. Sage has a Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre and has directed more than 20 plays, though his true love in theatre is improvisation. nown as one of the most unique and quirky festivals in the country, Frozen Dead Guy Days features three days of frosty merriment including 30 live bands in heated super-tents and outrageous events like coffin racing, costumed polar plunging, frozen T-shirt contests and much more. Celebrating its 19th year in 2020, Frozen Dead Guy Days, March 1315, continues to be a world-renowned spectacle. The home-grown frosty fest pays homage to Bredo Morstol, who is frozen in a state of suspended animation on dry ice and housed in a Tuff Shed above Nederland. Thousands of adventurous, life enthusiasts come to participate in Colorado’s “most frigidly fun festival” and view the events along with local, national and international media and entertainment. In addition to the festival itself, several businesses all over town host their own special activities and live music throughout the weekend. The festival received “a new lease on life” last year when Sarah Martin purchased 60 percent ownership in the event from long-time producer Amanda MacDonald. Martin has lived and been involved in the Front Range music and art community for more than 30 years and currently lives in Nederland. MacDonald remains a partial owner and is “elated for the new energy and vision.” This year’s event kicks off in familiar fashion on Friday in the ReAnimate Yourself Tent in Guercio Field with the Blue Ball, a huge opening party from 4 p.m.-1 a.m. featuring the theme “A Cosmic Affair.” Enjoy live music before and after the Grandpa Bredo and “Space Ice Queen” Costume Contests. A “silent disco” takes the party late-night. The event also features food and drinks for sale. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. The Blue Ball wristband also allows entry into a late night show at The Caribou Room. During the event on Saturday and Sunday, Nederland’s East 1st Street transforms into a pedestrian mall for “Grandpa’s Mall Crawl,” from 11 a.m.8 p.m. on Saturday and from noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. This allows revelers to enjoy street performers and participate in the brain freeze, frozen T-shirt and icy turkey bowling contests along with food trucks, the Frozen Dead Poet Slam and other activities. The festival’s main events, all of which are free to view, take place on Saturday. The Parade of Coffin Racers & Hearses starts at the Teen Center, 151 East St. and heads west on 1st St. beginning at noon. This popular spectator event

Half of all proceeds go to support TEENS, Inc.’s Outdoor Leadership Program. The Coffin Races, also in Guercio Field from 2-3:30 p.m., features teams racing with a coffin and “corpse” through a course full of obstacles, mud, snow, drills, and other racers. Prizes are awarded for best time team, runner up time team, best theme, and most notable snafu on course.
