WINTER RECREATION

Clear Creek County features a wide range of winter recreation options from developed ski areas to quiet backcountry trails, many of which are some of the state’s more popular for their easy access and options for all abilities. While this guide points out many things to do and see, it should only be considered a jumping off point for discovering all the cold-weather activities the county has to offer. ALPINE SKIING/SNOWBOARDING

Clear Creek County is home to two downhill ski and snowboard areas: Loveland Ski Area at Exit 216 and Echo Mountain at Exit 240. Loveland Ski Area has been Colorado’s “local mountain” for more than 75 years and offers a classic ski experience not found at large resorts. Situated high atop the Continental Divide, Loveland receives about 422 inches of snow each season, more than any resort in the Front Range or Summit County.

Loveland has something for every age and ability. Loveland Basin, the main area, offers a wide variety of terrain including wide-open cruisers, trees, bumps and open

bowls. For beginners, Loveland Valley offers a separate, non-intimidating learning area to work on techniques with its own lifts and gentle terrain. There is also a terrain park that is accessible to all ages and abilities, from entry level to advanced park-riders. Enjoy free snowcat skiing along the Continental Divide and explore some of Loveland’s most exhilarating terrain with a free ride on the Ridge Cat. Skiers and riders are required to have a valid season pass or lift ticket in

addition to Ridge Cat Pass which can be picked up free at the Basin Ticket Office. Convenient, free parking is available at both Loveland Basin and Loveland Valley. A shuttle service to and from each area is also available every 5-10 minutes.

Loveland Ski Area’s season began November 3 and continues through May 8. It is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Valley facilities and Lift 6 were upgraded for this season.

Echo Mountain offers affordable day and night skiing, snowboarding and tubing on 60 acres. It features a lodge with a restaurant and bar featuring Continental Divide views, equipment and clothing rental and an emphasis on a non-judgmental atmosphere.

Night skiing, Wednesday-Saturday from 4:30-9 p.m., requires online purchase. Trail improvements, including a route for beginners to more easily get to the bottom, were completed for this year.

Echo Mountain’s season is late November-April 16. It is open Mon.-Tues., 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wed.Fri., 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sat., 9 a.m.9 p.m.; and Sun., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

4 Mountain Adventure Guide - Clear Creek County | Winter 2022-2023

Arapahoe Basin, known as “The Legend” to many Coloradans, has one of the longest ski seasons in North America. Enjoy 360-degree views from the summit or lunch at Black Mountain Lodge while skiing some of the world’s best terrain. It offers a family-friendly, laidback atmosphere with free parking, one convenient base area and affordable lessons for kids and adults.

Most facilities are located in the base area including kids’ snowsports lessons, dining areas, retail shop, administrative offices and adult ski school. New on-mountain dining options, including an alpine hut, open this season and Lenawee Lift was replaced with a high-speed 6-pack.

A-Basin can be reached from Interstate 70 Exit 216 at Loveland Pass. Proceed west on U.S. 6 for 8 miles to their parking lots. When the pass is closed due to weather conditions, access is from I-70 Exit 205 at Silverthorne. No large vehicles, including RVs, towed trailers and charter buses, are

permitted to park in lots without advance permission.

Arapahoe Basin’s season is Oct. 23-mid-June and is open daily. Lifts begin operating at 9 a.m., Monday-Friday and 8:30 a.m. on weekends and select holidays. Most run until 4 p.m. daily, but times vary for each area of the mountain.

CLEAR CREEK GREENWAY: BAKERVILLE TO LOVELAND TRAIL (#60) This 9.8-mile, lightly-trafficked, out-and-back paved trail parallels the interstate and frozen waters of Clear Creek as it goes through the forest. The trail entrance is northeast of the Loveland Valley parking lot. It has an easy grade and snowcat grooming during the winter season provides an improved experience for fat bikes, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. It is closed to snowmobiles. The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail overlaps with the trail, connecting to the Herman Gulch Trailhead via an interstate underpass.

LOVELAND SKI AREA

Operating high atop the Continental Divide since 1936, Loveland Ski Area at I-70 Exit 216 is near to the hearts and homes of generations of Colorado skiers and riders. It has free snowcat skiing, an innovative lesson program and two base areas —including one just for beginners — with rental shops, sport shops, restaurants and bars. A new expansion of the Valley Lodge triples cafeteria seating, significantly expands the rental shop and provides the Ski & Ride School with a new Children’s Center and the ability to check in more guests. Call 720-552-5458 or visit skiloveland.com to learn more.

Mountaintop Matrimony

The 32nd Valentine’s Day Mountaintop Matrimony ceremony on Feb. 14, 2023, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., is a Loveland Ski Area tradition where new couples are joined in matrimony and married couples renew vows in a mass wedding at 12,050 feet. Pre-register online to receive two-for-one lift tickets.

Loveland Derby

For over 60 years Loveland Ski Area has hosted America’s largest amateur ski race, the Loveland Derby. Racers from across the country come for season’s last race in early April. Don’t miss the costumes, BBQs and fast-paced racing fun. For information, visit lovelandskiclub.com

ARAPAHOE BASIN SKI AREA

Founded in 1946, Arapahoe Basin is located on the Continental Divide and offers 1,428 acres with 147 runs of some of the highest terrain in North America. HERMAN GULCH TRAILHEAD

A former sawmill road, Herman Gulch Trail (#98) is a 6.4-mile out-and-back trail ending at Herman Lake with access to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail and Jones Pass. Visit the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website at avalanche.state. co.us for details. Contact the Clear Creek Ranger District to learn about snow and trail conditions See page 6 for more information.

EMPIRE/U.S. 40

Empire, located at the foot of Berthoud Pass, is part of Colorado’s early mining history and the search for gold, which was found here in 1860. The settlement was called Valley City, then changed to Empire City in 1861 and incorporated in 1882. The Original Hard Rock Café, which today is home to a local brewery, opened in 1934 and provided food and a dormitory for miners. The small town — a popular stop for food, coffee, craft beer, sweets and more — is on the way to and from busy recreation spots at Jones Pass, Berthoud Pass and beyond. U.S. 40 continues on to Grand County, Winter Park, Grand Lake and the West Entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Big Bend Picnic Site is further west on U.S. 40 at C.R. 202 on the way to the Jones Pass Trailhead in a pine forest with scenic views. There are seven sites with tables and fire grates. Restrooms are available at each site, but no drinking water.

MINTON PARK/OFF-LEASH DOG PARK

Minton Park features restrooms, playground, picnic tables, ball field, skate park, off-leash dog park and the Empire Cemetery, which is circled by a trail that begins behind the restrooms to the left of the cemetery. The mostly flat and easy trail continues along the river and circles around toward the interstate and to the east end of the town.

JONES PASS BERTHOUD PASS

Jones Pass is a 12,454 foot pass on the Continental Divide west of Empire. The area is known for its mining history and the still operating Henderson molybdenum mine. The Jones Pass Winter Trailhead provides access to the Jones Pass Road, a snowmobiling hot spot, and Butler Gulch, which is closed to motorized vehicles and popular with Nordic skiers and snowshoers.

From U.S. 40, turn left at the sign for Jones Pass/Henderson Mine. Park, off load at the Henderson Mine gate and follow the Jones Pass Road to reach backcountry bowls. Jones Pass Road travels above treeline for several miles until it ends after crossing the Continental Divide. Essentially a groomed snow road with steep grades, it is mostly used for snowmobile recreation.

The non-motorized Butler Gulch Trail is 2.4 miles one way and begins about 100 yards from the winter trailhead. Popular with Nordic and telemark skiers as well as snowshoers, the area has a quick approach and open bowls.

Ski or snowboard the area’s bowls with both touring and snowcat access with Jones Pass Guides, 409 East Park Ave. in Empire. Visit Selfsponsored Snow & Dirt, 335 Park Ave. in Empire, for snowmobile parts, apparel, rentals and more.

Berthoud Pass — named for Edward L. Berthoud, the chief surveyor of the Colorado Central Railroad during the 1870s — the pass traverses the Continental Divide on the border between Clear Creek County and Grand County. The Berthoud Pass Trailhead offers a variety of winter activities, has a warming hut with vault toilets and interpretive information. Winter activities include backcountry skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Sledding or snowmobiling is not allowed.

The road over the pass is a modern, four-lane highway that is well maintained with guard rails and other safety measures, but always check weather and road conditions before making plans at cotrip.org, isberthoudpassopen.com and berthoudpass.org.

Once home to the now-defunct Berthoud Pass Ski Area, the pass is a popular winter recreation destination due to an abundance of steep, challenging terrain and an annual average of 500 inches of snow. The twisting road on both sides of the pass makes “car shuttles” possible, eliminating the need for skiers and snowboarders to hike up after each run.

Other stunning trails include Second Creek Trail starting at the Second Creek Trailhead on U.S. 40 about a mile past the summit area. It’s a short, family-friendly hike to the Broome Hut or part of a longer, more difficult hike up to the Mount Nystrom Trail. Visit grandhuts.org or call 970-925-5775 for information.

Just on the other side of the pass is Grand County, the towns of Winter Park and Fraser, Winter Park Ski Resort and numerous other options to enjoy a wide range of winter recreation activities.

WINTER BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY

When heading to the backcountry, especially in winter, be aware of the range of dangers you may encounter, and be prepared. Clear Creek County created a Back-County Survival Guide card with tips, suggestions and a place to write contact and route information to assist rescuers if necessary. Find a downloadable version at alpinerescueteam.org There are many things backcountry users need to know, but here are a few basic reminders: travel with a partner and stay together, tell others your plans, assess your physical abilities, wear appropriate clothing, stay hydrated and know the weather. Keep in mind, cell phones can be used to track a location and may provide a signal to emergency personnel if charged. All backcountry users should also know how to handle issues involving elevation and altitude sickness, hypothermia, lightening, fallen trees, burned areas, streams and waterfalls, fast-changing mountain weather, wildlife encounters and more.

In winter, always carry essentials including first aid kit, compass, GPS or cell phone,

WINTER DRIVING TIPS

Colorado’s weather can change rapidly. Be prepared for tricky and sometimes dangerous winter driving conditions. Be a safe winter driver by slowing down; most crashes occur by driving too fast for the conditions. Leave extra space between vehicles, and always wear a seat belt. Use common sense when traveling on Forest Service roads, obey local speed limits and plan ahead.

MAINTAIN TRACTION Be sure to have good tire tread; start and stop gradually; drive at steady speeds; accelerate slightly when approaching a hill, then maintain a steady speed going up; and gear down on downgrades.

SKIDS When a vehicle begins to skid, remove your foot from the accelerator or brake, steer in the direction of the skid and once steady, turn the wheel straight and proceed.

BRAKING Be gentle when braking. Without anti-lock brakes, gently pump brakes to avoid locking wheels and skidding. Avoid braking on curves; drive through at a safe, steady speed.

COLORADO TRACTION & CHAIN LAWS

When conditions require, Colorado’s Passenger Vehicle Traction and Chain Law can be implemented through May. During a Traction Law, all motorists are required to have a 4WD or AWD vehicle and 3/16” tread depth or a two-wheel drive car with tires with a mud and snow designation, winter tires or all-weather rating and a 3/16” tread depth. Chains or an approved alternative traction device can also be used. When the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law is in effect, every vehicle must have chains or an approved alterna-

matches and candle, pocket knife, flashlight, warm clothing, insulated footwear, shelter, emergency food and water, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, and waterproof gloves and outerwear. Remember, cotton kills. Polypropylene or synthetic materials are highly recommended.

Avalanches are the biggest danger in winter. Always check Colorado Avalanche Information Center weather and avalanche data at 303-499-9650 or avalanche.state.co.us before heading out. See page 6. Remember: 30-45 degree slopes are most prone; cross slopes one at time; carry a transceiver, collapsible probe, shovel and know how to use them; wear gear with Recco reflectors; avoid leeward ridge sides; slides are most common during and after storms; avoid narrow gullies; stay high on ridges or well into valley floor; beware of warning signs like collapsing layers and recent slides.

Should a problem occur, the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office has authorized the Alpine Rescue Team to fulfill its search and rescue duties. The jurisdiction of the Alpine Rescue Team spans county-wide, excluding municipalities. Call 303-5262417 or visit alpinerescueteam.org for details.

tive traction device. Motorists driving with inadequate equipment when a Traction Law or Chain Law could face large fines.

BUSTANG/PEGASUS SHUTTLE

Avoid driving altogether and use CDOT’s Bustang West Line interregional express bus or its Pegasus shuttle vans to reach ski areas directly or connect with local transit along the I-70 corridor. Both have stops in Idaho Springs. Buses and shuttles are wheelchair accessible and offer USB ports, WiFi, power outlets and other conveniences. Visit ridebustang.com for details, schedules and stops.

ROAD CONDITIONS

In winter, Interstate 70 can become congested with ski traffic, especially on weekends and holidays. Avoid delays by planning ahead and staying informed about traffic and weather. FALL RIVER ROAD/ST. MARY’S GLACIER

Saint Mary’s Glacier and the historic community of Alice are nine miles above Exit 238 at the northern end of Fall River Road. The area is rich in mining history and was home to a popular ski area from the 1930s through 1986. The easy 3/4-mile glacier hike and its stunning views make it one of the region’s a top tourist destinations. It is enjoyable year round, but is especially popular for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Leashed dogs are welcome. Six miles up Fall River Road, Rainbow Road leads to Fall River Reservoir Snowmobile Trail, Chinns Lake and Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, which provides access to James Peak Wilderness.

BACKCOUNTRY DANGERS

Before heading into the backcountry, always check the Colorado Avalanche Information Center at avalanche.state.co.us or 303-499-9650 for avalanche conditions and weather forecast. See page 6. This area presents true back-country conditions at a very high altitude with limited access to assistance. Contact Clear Creek Ranger District at 303-567-3000 for the latest conditions and restrictions.

FALL RIVER RESERVOIR SNOWMOBILE TRAIL

This 3.2-mile one-way, intermediate snowmobile trail is six miles up Fall River Road at Rainbow Road. The trail follows the drainage. Enjoy views of Mt. Flora, Mt. Eva and James Peak. Snowmobiles operated on public land or trails must be registered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

LOCH LOMOND WINTER TRAIL

Steuart Road/Forest Road 7012 from Alice to Loch Lomond is a very popular ORV trail in the summer but in the winter the road becomes a non-motorized winter recreation hot spot. It is perfect for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking or winter hiking. Park on Alice Road then continue up toward Loch Lomond. Avoid avalanche danger by staying on the road.

Altitude sickness, also called mountain sickness, is a group of general symptoms that are brought on by climbing or walking to a higher and higher altitude (elevation) too quickly. Altitude sickness can affect anyone who goes to high altitudes — defined as 8,000-12,000 feet above sea level — without giving the body time to adjust to the changes in air pressure and oxygen level. All of Colorado’s ski resorts and most parts of Clear Creek County are considered high altitude.

The more rapid a climb to high altitude, the more likely that altitude sickness will develop. Age, sex and general health do not seem to make a difference in risk for altitude sickness. People with lung or heart disease may be told to avoid high altitudes. Skiers, hikers and anyone planning a trip to a location significantly higher than normal should be know the signs and symptoms of altitude sickness and how to prevent and treat it.

Idaho Springs, named for Chief Idaho and nearby natural hot springs, was founded in 1859. It is the site of the state’s first significant gold discovery. Mining was largely responsible for its creation and growth, and the city continues to preserve and celebrate its heritage. During the late 20th century, the town evolved into a tourist center and popular stop for travelers heading to and from recreation areas along Interstate 70 or nearby Mount Evans, Echo Lake and adjacent National Forest lands. A Victorian-era downtown offers unique shops, popular restaurants and breweries, while mine tours and historic sites provide insight into local history. Idaho Springs’ western-most exit is mostly a residential area, but the exit is the best way to access Stanley Road (County Road 312) Bikeway and mine tours to the west and the Clear Creek Greenway through Idaho Springs and its parks to the east.

SCENIC DRIVES

Several of Colorado’s more spectacular scenic drives can be found in the region. Three designated Colorado Scenic Byways, and several one-of-a-kind routes connecting them, showcase the area’s unparalleled scenery and unique towns. These routes are accessible to most vehicles all year, but be sure to check road conditions before heading out during winter and spring months. See page 18 for winter driving tips.

BERTHOUD PASS/U.S. 40 l

Berthoud Pass on U.S. 40 west of Empire crosses the Continental Divide at 11,300 feet on the border of Clear Creek and Grand counties near the closed Berthoud Pass Ski Area. The modern, four-lane highway has guard rails and other safety measures. The area is popular for winter recreation and offers outstanding views.

CLEAR CREEK CANYON/U.S. 6 l

This road begins near Exit 244 and is an alternative route to Golden that descends through a long, narrow gorge featuring a paved trail, river fishing spots, trailheads, ice climbing areas and beautiful scenery. Black Hawk and the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is also reached from Exit 244.

FALL RIVER ROAD l

Fall River Road connects I-70 to the St. Mary’s Glacier/Alice area at Exit 238. The nine-mile route reaches heights above 10,000 feet and includes incredible views as well as a popular glacier hike.

GUANELLA PASS SCENIC BYWAY l

This popular Colorado Scenic Byway begins in Georgetown at Exit 228. It is seasonally closed in November at the private Naylor Lake, about 10 miles up, and reopens on Memorial Day weekend. The Mount Evans Wilderness Area borders most of the east side and non-motorized winter recreation is common.

HIGHWAY 103/MOUNT EVANS SCENIC BYWAY l

The Mount Evans Scenic Byway, which begins at the Idaho Springs Visitor Center, closes at the base of Mount Evans near Echo Lake in winter, but the byway continues from Echo Lake to Bergen Park/Evergreen Parkway via Highway 103 and Jefferson County Road 66/Squaw Pass Road. The route takes drivers from open ponderosa and juniper hills to open meadows and up through deep spruce forests into an alpine environment and past Echo Mountain Ski Area before reaching the Evergreen area.

LARIAT LOOP SCENIC BYWAY l

Retrace the motoring adventures of the early 1920s on this 40mile route. The designated National Scenic Byway, which includes the Evergreen Parkway at Exits 251 and 252, features Colorado’s first gateways to the mountains. Sharp curves, winding roads, spectacular views, and waysides are featured. The route includes Bergen Park, Evergreen, Kittredge, Morrison and Golden.

LOVELAND PASS/U.S.

6 l

Loveland Pass, reached via U.S. 6 at Exit 216, is a high mountain pass with hairpin curves and steep drop-offs that reaches an elevation of 11,990-feet. It features unmatched views of surrounding peaks and Colorado scenery. It is a scenic alternative to Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and Summit County.

Colorado’s public land agencies remind visitors to KNOW BEFORE YOU GO, be courteous, help protect sensitive natural areas and recreate responsibly as wildfire risks continue amid rising temperatures, sustained drought and windy conditions. Plan ahead and remember essential responsible recreation guidelines, including:

ENJOY AND PROTECT SHARED PUBLIC LANDS

Visitors are reminded to do their part to help protect land, wildlife, water and plants. Numerous small disturbances can quickly harm sensitive natural resources and have a lasting impact. Remember to “Leave No Trace” and pack out all trash and dog waste.

BE COURTEOUS AND INCLUSIVE

People visit trails and public lands for many reasons, including emotional and physical well-being and spending time with others. Visitors of all identities and abilities deserve respect and courtesy.

DRESS IN LAYERS

People who remain outdoors for an extended period of time such as hikers and hunters are susceptible to hypothermia, a condition where the body experiences abnormally low body temperature which can lead to death. It’s very important to dress in layers to maintain proper body temperature. Do not expose skin such as the tip of your nose, ears and fingers to the cold for extended periods of time to avoid frostbite.

PLAN AHEAD AND KNOW YOUR LIMITS

Contact local agencies to get the latest information about road conditions, seasonal closures, avalanche conditions and

weather. Local public land agencies continue to see sustained high numbers of rescues. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Look at the weather forecast and trailhead information. Bring enough food and water. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes and pack for changing conditions. Don’t visit public lands alone or during adverse weather and tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return.

KNOW FIRE REGULATIONS

Officials issue citations to anyone who violates fire regulations meant to protect public lands and visitors. Know current fire risks all year and check local restrictions and bans.

CHARGE YOUR PHONE

Be sure your phone is charged in case you need assistance or there is an emergency. Call 911for emergencies, such as a fire or if you see smoke. Cell service may be extremely limited in mountain locations. Try to text 911 if there is not enough cell service.

DON’T PARK ILLEGALLY/FOLLOW REGULATIONS

Have alternate plans if parking lots are full. Trailhead lots are often full early on weekends. Parks and trails are generally less crowded on weekdays. Review regulations before arriving as individual areas can have special restrictions. Rangers will issue tickets.
