CLEAR CREEK
Vol. 2, Issue 10 • March 2020
TAKE NOTE
O
nce in a decade, the U.S. Census Bureau does a headcount of every person in the country. This headcount determines how billions of dollars in Federal funding will be allocated, as well as fair representation in the House of Representatives. This is how Clear Creek County gets funding for public services such as healthcare clinics, schools & education, roads, bridges and emergency response for the next 10 years. On average, each person living in Colorado represents $2,300 in federal funding per year. If a family of four in Clear Creek County is missed, the county would potentially miss out on $92,000 for the coming decade. Help the community get access to critical public service funding and respond to the census questionnaire. During March, residents receive an invitation to participate in the Census count. If you normally get your mail delivered to a P.O. box, a Census questionnaire will be hand delivered to your door. If you get your mail delivered, you will be receiving the Census questionnaire in your mailbox. March 12 is the first day people can respond to the Census Questionnaire. It takes about 10 minutes to fill out, and you can respond online, over the phone or mail back answers. Census Day is April 1 nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, respond in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When completing the census, you will include everyone living in your home on April 1, 2020. During May-July, if you still have not responded, a Census worker will come knocking to do an in-person interview. You should fill out the Census questionnaire with your Clear Creek address if you live in Clear Creek for at least six months and a day during the year. If you live for the majority of the year at a different permanent address in the U.S., fill out the Census questionnaire with that address. If you do not have a permanent address elsewhere, fill out the Census questionnaire with your Clear Creek address. In this situation, you fill it out for where you were staying on April 1, 2020. For questions about the Census in Clear Creek County, visit clearcreekcounty. us/2020census, e-mail ujohnson@clearcreekcounty.us or call 303-679-2350.

Sustainable living focus of education series IDAHO SPRINGS
T
hree Clear Creek County community members created an “educational collaboration for the Clear Creek community” focused on sustainable living. A series of free events are planned for locations in Idaho Springs in March, April, June and September with topics including climate, Earth Day, electric vehicles, plant-based food and more. Christine Crouse of CSU Extension in Clear Creek County, Brandi Murphy of Scraps-to-Soil and the Idaho Springs Chamber of Commerce and community member Laurie Beckel of KYGT Radio have known each other a long time through local gardening, 4-H and other events as well as yoga class. Over the years, the three have casually discussed various sustainable living issues before forming a plan for a Clear Creek Sustainable Living Series last fall. “Through my programming in 4-H, mountain gardening, and consumer energy over the past seven years, I have learned that the Clear Creek community is interested in the values of sustainable living and homesteading on their property, in addition to taking on the challenges of high-elevation gardening,” Crouse said. “There is increasing interest in growing hops and home brewing, as well as backyard chickens and honeybee hives, vegetables, and food preservation, and composting. The Sustainable Living Educational Series aligns well with the CSU Extension mission to empower Coloradans to address important and emerging community issues using

dynamic, science-based educational resources.” The series kicks off with a presentation and discussion with Owen Perkins of the Climate Reality Project, March 20, 6:308:30 p.m., at the United Center, 1440 Colorado Blvd. Take a look at the science behind climate change, the need to address controllable causes of the climate crisis, and our ability to address those causes with solutions currently at hand. The heart of the presentation is Nobel Laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore’s PowerPoint on the climate crisis that was the part of An Inconvenient Truth and An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power. Additional events include a free Earth Day Fair, April 25, noon-4 p.m., in Citizen’s Park in downtown Idaho Springs; an Electric Vehicle Expo with speakers and display vehicles, June 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the United Center; and a free screening of The Biggest Little Farm and a Plant-Based Community Potluck, Sept. 17, 6:30-8:30 p.m., in CourtneyRyley-Cooper Park.
