TAKE NOTE

W

inter holidays are a time for families, friends and co-workers to get together and enjoy the season. That means a greater risk for fire. In fact, the holiday season is one of the most dangerous times of the year for household fires. Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy holiday season and keep you, your family and your neighbors safe from fire. Cooking is the top cause of holiday fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. The most common culprit is food left unattended. It’s easy to get distracted; take a pot holder with you when you leave the kitchen as a reminder. It is also important to remember two of every five home decoration fires are started by candles and nearly half of decoration fires happen because decorations are placed too close to a heat source. The National Fire Protection Association suggests always blowing out lit candles when leaving a room or going to bed. Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to sleep. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant. Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. Keep in mind, some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged. Keep decorations away from windows and doors. Before entertaining, test smoke alarms and tell guests about any home fire escape plans. Keep children and pets away from lit candles and keep matches and lighters up high in a locked cabinet. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stove top. Ask smokers to smoke outside and remind them to keep their smoking materials with them and to wet cigarette butts with water before discarding. Be responsible with fireplace and wood stove ashes, too. Never use a flammable container, no matter how cold, or put any ashes in any container on a deck or other flammable material. It is suggested to place them in a metal bucket, soak in water for two days, then bury the cold ashes in soil.

Artisans create ‘icy winterland’

I

SUMMIT COUNTY

ce Castles is an awe-inspiring, must-see “winter phenomenon that brings fairy tales to life” in Dillon, Colorado. The unique experience is built using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, icecarved tunnels, slides, and fountains. The Dillon location is expected to open in mid-December if temperatures remain cold. Construction began on the “icy wonderland” in Dillon in November when build crews turned on water and began growing icicles—the primary building material for the acre-sized attraction. Each day, 20-40 ice artisans grow and harvest up to 10,000 icicles to build the winter experience. Each of those icicles is then hand-placed and sprayed with water. The process

is repeated until the castles reach heights of around 30 feet. This year’s castles in Dillon will also feature ice-carved slides, tunnels, fountains, crawl spaces and more. The team of ice artisans in Dillon will spend a combined 4,000 hours this season dripping, shaping, and hand-placing the icicles, while embedding the structures with color-changing LED lights to create a life-size winter playground. The concept for Ice Castles was created when founder and Utah resident Brent Christensen attempted to build an ice cave for his daughter in the front yard of his home in Alpine, Utah. The project turned into a winter hit drawing crowds of locals to visit and tour his creation. Visit www.icecastles.com and facebook.com/TheIceCastles to learn more about the attraction and its opening date.

I

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY

n Colorado, a pair of cross-country or telemark skis can transport just about anyone from their everyday life into a peaceful forest environment of snow-laden trees, white meadows and trails along frozen creeks. A hidden world of winter beauty and sensational settings, without the crowds, can be unveiled throughout Clear Creek County, and neighboring Grand and Summit counties, by visiting the region’s Nordic centers and easilyaccessible backcountry trails. There are also ranches, clubs and nonprofit organizations that maintain networks of cross-country trails throughout the area. For residents and visitors to the region there are no shortage of places to get out and put a pair of free-heeled skis, and their bodies, to work. Winter is a spectacular time to visit the area’s forests, wilderness areas, state park and Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s also the best time to visit a Nordic center for great trails and plenty of additional activities and amenities close at hand. Many even allow dogs. Backcountry options abound throughout the region. The Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests and the Indian Peaks, James Peak and Mount Evans wilderness areas—which run from Rocky Mountain National Park south to Clear Creek County and from western Boulder County to Grand County—provide a lifetime of backcountry skiing options. Huts, yurts and cabins located in the area are also accessible to skiers. Clear Creek County offers several outstanding backcountry options including Old Squaw Pass Road, South Chicago Creek Trail and Echo Lake along with easier options including Bakerville-Loveland Trail, Mount Evans Scenic Byway and Argentine Railroad Grade Trail. Even more prime, backcountry skiing exists in the thousands of acres of national forest throughout the region. Recreation maps and other resources can be found at clearcreekcounty.org. Nordic centers are also plentiful throughout Grand and Summit counties and other nearby locations. Avoid backcountry hazards, get on the snow quickly, try additional snow sports and have their top amenities close at hand at these world-class facilities.

When planning a backcountry ski trip, be sure conditions are appropriate for skiing and don’t forget to consider other users and your safety. Check conditions and consult the Colorado Avalanche Information Center at avalanche.state. co.us before heading out as conditions can change hourly. Skiers must also be prepared for quick changes in weather and exhaustion. Skills and gear to handle the risks are essential. Always dress in layers with insulating, waterproof clothing, protect your eyes and skin with sunglasses and sunscreen and carry water. Additionally, get yourself and your equipment in tune before heading out. Focus on form and technique, not your heart rate or speed. Rental stores, Nordic centers, gear shops and online forums and help you learn about layering waxes, trail conditions, gear inventory and what to wear in current conditions. One of the best ways to try out the sport is the head to a Nordic center for well-groomed trails, rental gear and expert instruction. From tracked and groomed meadow trails to steep backcountry climbs, Grand County has a Nordic experience for skiers of every level on its many hundreds of kilometers of trails. Five commercial centers and a multitude of backcountry sites give skiers and snowshoers plenty of options. Most resorts are open and host a variety of early season events. Devil’s Thumb Ranch, which is already open, is a nationally-recognized, premier Nordic center. It offers nearly 120km of trails in the pristine and private Ranch Creek Valley at the base of the Continental Divide. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Among other events, the ranch hosts the annual Tommelfest Nordic Ski Festival, Dec. 8 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Kick off the season with free lessons, keg tossing, glog and “all kinds of Nordic activities.” A beloved Holiday Market also takes place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Women’s Classic Ski Clinics, Dec. 19, Jan. 9, 16 and 30, 10 a.mnoon, are a perfect way to build skills and learn from top instructors. The Stagecoach Classic, Jan. 26, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. is an annual classic-only race and tour that follows a historic stagecoach route from Devils Thumb Ranch to Winter Park. The YMCA of the Rockies’ Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center, which opened

in November, offers more than 120km of world-class Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking trails accommodating everyone from first-time participants to elite racers. Dogs on leashes can join guests on some trails. It also offers ice skating, tubing, dog sledding and sleigh rides. Snow Mountain Ranch hosts numerous Nordic events including its 2nd Annual Nordic Season Opener, Dec. 15, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. featuring a kickoff party, on-snow demos, social skiing and cook-out. The 19th Annual Snow Mountain Ranch Classic race is Jan. 5, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and features two classic-only races. A Women’s Cross-County Ski Clinic & Workshop is Jan. 26, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and the Snow Mountain Ranch Stampede is March 9-10. An Intro to Backcountry A/T Skiing clinic is offered Jan. 13, 27, Feb. 10 and 24. Grand Lake Nordic Center, run by the Grand Lake Metropolitan Recreation District, features scenic views of Rocky Mountain National Park with beginner to advanced terrain on 35km of classic and skate skiing trails. It is a full-service destination with rentals, lessons, retail shop and soup kitchen. There is also a free tubing hill open to all. Free Lessons are offered for all ages and levels, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. It plans to open Dec. 1. Granby Ranch, 20 miles west of Winter Park, opens Dec. 14 with 25km of cross-country skiing trails on two Nordic networks. The resort is designed for skiers and riders of all ages and abilities. Grand Nordic Ski Club offers Free Ski Lessons to everyone this season at Devils Thumb Ranch, Dec 8; Grand Lake Nordic Center, Dec. 16; and Snow Mountain Ranch, Jan. 20. The group also hosts the 6th Annual Ranch2Ranch Cross Country Ski Trek from Snow Mountain Ranch to Granby Ranch, Feb. 9. Visit grandnordic.org to learn more. Summit County is also home to several cross-country skiing options including Breckenridge Nordic Ski Center, Gold Run Nordic Center, Frisco Nordic Center and Keystone Nordic Center. All are currently open and offer world-class trails. Eldora Mountain Resort Nordic Center near Nederland in Boulder County opens at the beginning of December and offers 40km of groomed classic and skate trails through alpine meadow and pine forest. It also provides cross-country and

Telemark ski lessons while the Nordic lodge offers food and rentals. There are also many outfitters in the region that lead trips and still more that rent and sell equipment. Elevating Live Music Photos by Jenise Jensen/JeniseJensen.com

New venue expands, enhances Colorado’s mountain music scene

By Jeffrey V. Smith SUMMIT COUNTY odd Altschuler and Keegan Casey have provided live music fans in Summit and Eagle counties, who routinely travel long distances to hear music, a much bigger and better reason to stay close to home. The business partners, who have owned and operated Barkley Ballroom on Frisco’s Main Street for five years, recently opened their brand new 10 Mile Music Hall about a block away. It’s what they consider their “perfect venue.” While it accommodates more than 700 standing patrons, the new room remains intimate and familiar to locals and visitors alike. Front Range mountain residents may now find themselves traveling up, rather than down, to enjoy live music. Named after the mountain range, the independently-owned room, built from the ground up and engineered for sound, is now the largest year-round venue in the Colorado mountains. It’s attracting large regional acts and nationally touring bands that, until now, had no place to perform west of the metro area. That was the plan from the start. According to Altschuler, the idea was to create a space that larger bands would want to play and accommodate large enough audiences, “so we can spend more time at home and not have to drive around or fly around for concerts.” They basically wanted to bring the Denver music scene to the mountains. It seems to be working. “If I were to draw up a hit list of bands to have here in year one, I would say that 80 percent of them are coming, which is beyond my wildest dreams or imagination,” Altschuler said. “I just hope that everyone has such a good time they want to come back for more. The people I’ve talked to are just super excited to be able to have a real music venue in their area.” Leftover Salmon performed a two-night run over Halloween to open the room and acts like Railroad Earth, Sam Bush Band, Galactic, Disco Biscuits and Chris Robinson Brotherhood are

just a few of the more than 100 annual shows to be booked in the first year. Leading up to New Year’s Eve, the venue hosts The Infamous Stringdusters, Dec. 28-29; Eminence Ensemble, Dec. 30; and Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Dec. 31. Additionally, several multi-day, destination events with inclusive lift tickets at Copper Mountain are planned throughout winter. Numerous weddings and other events are also in the works. The venue is located within 20 minutes of six major ski areas, which allows it to draw from tens of thousands of visitors. If the first month of shows is any indication, it’s also pulling non-skiing music fans in from Denver and Boulder and other parts of the state. This formula, so far, has not taken away its local feel. “The funny thing about this music venue is that it still feels like your family when you come here because it’s not owned by a cooperation or anything,” Altschuler explained. “I probably know half the people that come in here. Me and Keegan are here every night, so it still feels like our own thing in Summit County. It’s not like a company came in and said, ‘hey we want to have a music venue.’ It’s still like two guys who love skiing and snowboarding, just on a bigger scale.” It’s a bit bigger, but, according to Altschuler, the new room has a “very similar” feel to the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride except that it’s a little more industrial, mountain modern. In addition to a state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, the venue also boasts amenities like a summer-time rooftop deck featuring Moe’s Original BBQ, optional drink ordering app, four-camera live streaming and recording system, smart bar cell phone charging stations and water bottle fillers. The 10 Mile Music Hall is located at 710 E. Main St. in Frisco. Visit 10milemusic.com for a schedule of upcoming events and more information. Tickets can be purchased online, in person at Cool Inside, 620 Main St. in Frisco, from noon-6 p.m. daily or at the venue beginning an hour before doors open.

LOCAL BUSINESS

For the love of cheese By Jeffrey V. Smith IDAHO SPRINGS aron Stiles, Stephanie Seabrook and Kevin Buckley have a passion for cheese. Their adoration is so strong, the Idaho Springs locals opened the Rocky Mountain Cheese Company in May simply because there was no place nearby to get good cheese. They are now serving “delicious” cheese, “amazing” bread, “great” meat, “fine” wine and “delectable” sundries—both in-house and to-go—to residents from across the region and visitors from across the country. The store also offers party platters, gift baskets, gift certificates, catering and special events in-house. The idea to open the shop originated last Christmas when friends from Wisconsin, who happen to own a cheese factory and store, visited Idaho Springs. “They loved our quaint little town but noticed that there wasn’t a cheese shop within miles,” Stiles said. “After tasting several varieties of their delicious Amish milk cheese and consuming a few holiday cheers, we decided that it was a great idea to open a cheese shop in Idaho Springs.” Once the decision to open a store was made, the group began building it from scratch. They found a prime Miner Street location when Dan Ebert leased them room next to his Two Brothers Deli in the space formerly known as “One Door Down,” and gave them advice on how to make it work. “Dan gave us a ton of guidance as to how to open and run a successful business,” Stiles said. “We also did a road trip to Minnesota and Wisconsin and toured several cheese factories, shops and restaurants.” The Truffle Cheese

D Rocky Mountain Cheese Company offers Fondue To-Go for $19.99. Swiss “Chef Steph” has assembled 500g of cave-aged Gruyère, Appenzeller and Vacherin cheeses - enough fondue for at least two people. Just add white wine and follow the directions.

Shop and Truffle Table in Denver are also credited for their “invaluable advice and direction” in launching the store. The Rocky Mountain Cheese Company now offers 75 varieties of domestic and “the best” imported cheeses, cured meats, in-house baked baguettes, locally-sourced cheese from Longmont and Fort Collins, jams and chutneys from Dumont, olives and olive oil from Golden, mustard from Fort Collins, honey from Longmont and chocolate from Boulder. Syrup, pickles, spreads and nuts are also available and about a dozen varieties of wine are served through Two Brothers Deli. Guests are welcome to dine in with cheese plates and platters, Swiss fondue and, soon, Raclette. “We also offer six different cheese curds, which are very popular with our visitors from the Midwest,” Stiles said. The store serves an even mix of Clear Creek County and Evergreen locals and visitors from Denver, the Front Range and almost every state in the country and across the globe. “Cheeseloving customers enter and leave our shop with a smile on their face,” Stiles said. “We have been fortunate to employ a great staff that enjoy the positive interactive customers.” As their business grows, the owners are not limiting themselves to a storefront. There are plans to move into a larger facility, manufacturer their own brand of in-house cheese and expand with franchised Rocky Mountain Cheese Companies in the region. After the holidays, look for a Beer & Cheese Pairing featuring Tommyknocker Brewery and a Wine & Cheese Pairing featuring Two Brothers’ wine distributor.
