TAKE NOTE
n February, there are several things to celebrate. The month features events, holidays and religious observances including the Super Bowl, Feb. 2; Ground Hog Day, Feb. 2; Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14; Presidents Day, Feb. 17; and Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26. Black History Month takes place during February because Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were both born during the month. It’s also National Heart Month and spring training for Major League Baseball kicks off for pitchers and catchers. February is also Library Lovers’ Month, a month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types. This is a time for everyone, especially library support groups, to recognize the value of libraries and to work to assure that the Nation’s libraries will continue to serve. Libraries depend on the support of the entire community to ensure they remain free to the millions of people who visit in person or via the web each year. According to the Friends & Foundations of California Libraries, there are many ways to “love your library” including contributing, being a friend of the library, volunteering and promoting. In Febraury, and all year, think about donating your time, money, and expertise to your local library. One of the best ways to support a library is to join its Friends of the Library group. These volunteers provide fundraising and other assistance for many libraries. The Clear Creek County Library District has Friends groups for both the Idaho Springs LIbrary and John Tomay Memorial Library in Georgetown. Their missions are to build a partnership between the library and the community “by assisting the library in providing information, ideas, and cultural experiences that enrich lives and strengthen the community.” Visit cccld.org/about/friends-of-the-library or cccld.org/friends-ofthe-georgetown-library to learn more. The Evergreen Library has Friends of Jefferson County Public Library as advocates, volunteers, and supporters. Check out the benefits of becoming a Friend and sign up at jeffcolibraryfoundation.org/friends-of-jcpl/become-a-friend.

Winter Trails
Access winter’s backcountry wonders with snowshoes, local trails
C
lear Creek County and the surrounding area offer unmatched potential for adventure, breathtaking scenic landscapes and unique winter experiences on trails popular in the summer. A pair of snowshoes is all that’s needed. As long as there’s snow on the ground, snowshoes can take you most anywhere you’d normally hike. There is no need for years of training or to spend much money, if any, and rentals are affordable. Throughout Clear Creek County and Evergreen areas a pair of snowshoes can unveil a hidden world of winter beauty and sensational settings. If well prepared, winter hiking is also a wonderful way to stay active and in tune with nature. As amazing as it can be, hazards exist when in the backcountry. Anyone planning to participate in winter sports must be prepared for avalanches, quick changes in weather and exhaustion. Snow can hide dangers like cliffs, rock fall, tree wells and deadfall. Skills and gear to handle the risks are essential. Always check conditions—including the latest data and warnings from Colorado Avalanche Information Center at avalanche.state.co.us—weather and maps before leaving and dress in layers with insulating, waterproof clothing. Protect eyes and skin from the sun with sunglasses and sunscreen and carry water. Avoid backcountry hazzards by snowshoeing at nearby Nordic Centers in Grand

and Summit counties as well as private ranches including Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Winter Park with its 5,000 acres and 20 km of marked snowshoe trails. C Lazy U Ranch in Granby is another option. It was voted the second best snowshoe destination in the world by Snowshoe Magazine. Clear Creek County, with more than 75 percent public lands within its borders, is the perfect place to explore the backcountry on snowshoes. Most of Clear Creek County’s best summer hiking trails are transformed into amazing snowshoeing treks during winter months. Explore all the options, especially if the goal is to avoid crowds. Pay attention to access, as some roads are closed in winter. A handful of popular trails for snowshoeing are highlighted here, but many more options exist. The Bakerville to Loveland Trail, Interstate 70 Exit 221 and Loveland Valley, is a 9.8-mile, lightly-trafficked, trail with an easy grade for learning to snowshoe. It is closed to snowmobiles and an underpass connects to Herman Gulch and Watrous Gulch trails. Argentine Central Railroad Grade Trail to Pavilion Point, Frontage Road in Silver Plume, follows an easy railroad grade to Pavilion Point, which provides views of Georgetown and the mountains to the east. Silver Dale Interpretive Site, off the Guanella Pass Road above Georgetown, accesses great beginner and family trails centered around the mining ghost town.
CLEAR CREEK
Jones Pass Trailhead provides access to nearby Butler Gulch, which is closed to motorized vehicles and used by skiers and snowshoers. The Berthoud Pass Trailhead, on U.S. 40 north of Empire, offers a variety of winter activities. The site has a warming hut with vault toilets, interpretive information, and is open year-round. Saint Mary’s Glacier Trail, one of the top destinations in Clear Creek County, is an easy snowshoe hike from early winter through spring when the weather is right. Its starting elevation is 10,428 feet. Echo Lake Park, Highway 103 & Mt. Evans Road, is considered a good beginner’s hike while still providing an alpine experience including views above treeline. More difficult trails can be accessed as well. Beaver Brook Watershed, 25123 Squaw Pass Road, is part of Clear Creek County Open Space and a 20-mile wildlife corridor between Elk Meadow in Jefferson County and Mount Evans. Evergreen’s Elk Meadow Park, 32281 Stagecoach Blvd., offers numerous trails for quiet snowshoe hikes while nearby Alderfer/Three Sisters Park, 30357 Buffalo Park Road, provides several options for trails over easy terrain.

n unpretentious jewelry store on Miner Street in downtown Idaho Springs is actually home to one of the largest gemstone and mineral jewelry collections in Colorado along with original Colorado-inspired jewelry. Idaho Springs Mountain Gems is a family business featuring custom designs “inspired by the surrounding nature and beauty.” It specializes in creating custom pieces, full repair, appraisals and is known for its unique, mountain-inspired designs. Owner and Silversmith Andrew Clement, a Colorado native and graduate of Denver School of Metal Arts, has been making jewelry much of his life. “I’ve always loved it. It’s been pretty much my entire life’s passion,” he said. According to Clement, in addition to his formal education he’s also apprenticed under three jewelers, including one who taught him the “more intricate parts” of silversmithing, which he prefers more than goldsmithing. The silversmith purchased the eight-year-old store in 2018 from its previous owner, Jerry Furberg, after working there for “quite a while.” He then modified the name and eventually moved the business next door. “On the other side… a lot of people weren’t seeing all the gems we have… we want to show people all the different gems in the world you never get to see. I mean, when you go to a normal jewelry store you always see diamonds, rubies, sapphire’s; all the same stuff.” After running the store alone, apart from some accounting help from his father, Clement last year hired his long-time friend Ian away from a corporate job at Walmart. The two—who say they’re “almost brothers” and grew up living in and near the mountains—met 22 years ago at Ralston Elementary in Genesee. “They always say you never want to go into business or be a partner with your best friend or family, and we are proving that theory very much wrong,” Ian said. Mostly, Idaho Springs Mountain Gems is recognized for its original designs. “A lot of the pieces you see in here, we either designed or created ourselves,” Clement said. “We create pieces CLEAR CREEK
around the stones themselves. The main design we always love doing is our Mountain Pieces. That’s what we are famous for. Anytime we see a part of the mountains we love, or something that inspires us, we design a piece based off of it.” Although gold and other metals are found in their designs, silver dominates the collection. “Silver is my favorite medium… you can really work and play around with [it] easier than you can with gold… which is a bit too soft for the larger scale pieces I love doing. When you work with silver you can just build on top of it and keep going until you finally have your masterpiece.” The store is also known for “keeping it as local as possible,” with its use of local gold and gems as well as its turquoise pieces from the Zuni tribe. “We are keeping the tradition of making unique jewelry alive. I personally love doing custom work. It’s my favorite thing,” Clement explained. “I love meeting people who want to step outside of that [traditional bridal] box and want to make something you will never see anywhere else and could not be replicated.” Not only do their designs set them apart, so do their prices. According to Clement, the store is very competitive. “We try to go for making each piece look very high-end with a very sophisticated look to it, but since it’s silver, it’s not going to cost an arm and a leg,” he said. “Jewelry shouldn’t be for one select group of people who can afford it. It should be for everyone. We’d rather you love the piece than burn a hole in your wallet.” According to Ian, they don’t charge much for their silver, and labor is “really, really, really, really cheap.” He said, “most of the time when you buy something from our store we are just charging for the stone. That’s it.” Prices get even better with the store’s “Word of the Week” specials, which are specially chosen by their jewelry-loving avian mascot, Mr. Jay. “We bring him to work every single day, but each Friday we will pull out pieces from each of our cases and whatever he really, really likes, he will jump on it, or talk a lot to it, becomes Mr. Jay’s ‘Word of the Week.’” Ian explained.
