TAKE NOTE
S
ummer is here, which means it’s time to get out and discover the great things happening at your local parks and recreation centers. This July, explore the undiscovered roles of local parks and recreation during Park and Recreation Month. While playgrounds, recreation centers, sports leagues and summer camps are a few of the things that come to mind when we think of parks and rec, it is so much more than that. In July, take the time to learn about those less-known park and recreation offerings like science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming; senior programs; innovative health and wellness opportunities; community celebrations; outdoor education and more. Redefine how you think about your local parks and rec, and uncover a lifetime of discovery. Spending time outdoors reduces stress and improves mental health. Exposure to nature improves creativity, decreases stress hormones, and calms aggression. Take time in July to find new ways to be active and enjoy our mountain surroundings. Clear Creek Metropolitan Recreation District offers a wide range of group fitness, aquatic, youth and adult programs and sports leagues. This summer look for monthly hiking club events, July 10, Aug. 14 and Sept. 11; Trails and Ales Happy Hour Hikes, July 19 and Aug. 16; overnight backcountry hut trip, July 25-26; and an overnight bike trip to Palisade, Sept. 29-30. Evergreen Park & Recreation District has many fun activities going on throughout the month including a Community Appreciation Party, July 12. Other highlights of Park and Recreation Month include: Free Fitness Friday on Buchanan Field, July 6, 13, 20 & 27; Evergreen Mountain 15K, July 7; Night Boating at Evergreen Lake, July 7, 14 & 21; Free Muscles and Yoga class, July 12. Park and recreation districts and programs in Clear Creek County and Evergreen provide countless ways to recognize the month. Get online or stop by your local recreation center to find out about the many ways they serve your community.

Glimpse into the past
Coulter House
Georgetown Heritage Center
Visit the Rose Street Bed & Breakfast, and its Victorian parlour on this year’s Historic House Tour, July 28.
H
istoric Georgetown Inc. presents its biannual Historic House Tour, July 28 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This year’s tour—which marks Georgetown’s sesqui-centennial anniversary—provides residents and visitors an opportunity to “glimpse into the past through the portal of over 12 fine homes, historic sites and elegant gardens” of the Georgetown-Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District, many of which date back to the 19th century mining boom. The event is recommended for guests 12-112 years old. The theme of the 2018 tour, “Parlours and Perennials,” focuses on these two popular staples of the Victorian era. A house with a parlour indicated the status of the home’s owner. It was a place for receiving and entertaining one’s guests, a place to engage in discourse. Perennials refers to the 19th century pastime of keeping a cultivated garden. Multiple gardens are included throughout this year’s tour and several of the homes and buildings
boast magnificently recreated Victorian landscapes, including the Georgetown Heritage Center’s mountain garden, created and maintained by master gardeners from the Clear Creek CSU Extension program. To celebrate Georgetown’s 150th anniversary, one of the featured homes is the Coulter House, where Judge John Coulter was instrumental in drafting the territorial charter. Historic Georgetown, Inc. is also giving away one free house tour pass with every new $100 level membership purchased through July 28. Tour passes, which are $35 in advance online through July 26 or $40 at the event, include admission to all designated sites, a copy of “Guide to Historic Sites in Georgetown, Colorado” by William E. Wilson, free refreshments and free rides on a shuttle bus. Passes can be purchased online or purchased at Strousse Park, 6th and Rose Street in Georgetown, the day of the event.

Getting elevated with aerial adventure parks, ziplines

Sky Trek Aerial Adventure Park Photo by Jeffrey V. Smith
CLEAR CREEK COUNTY erial adventure parks, ziplines and other exhilarating, elevated attractions are becoming increasing popular across Colorado, and Clear Creek County is no different. Almost annually, another heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping attraction opens, while established locations continue developing their already thrilling and challenging offerings. The county is currently home to a multi-activity outdoor adventure park, high-tower zipline tour, cliffside zipline tour and new aerial adventure park. Opened in June by the Colorado Adventure Center, Colorado Sky Trek is a miningthemed aerial adventure park designed for “maximum fun and challenge.” It offers adrenaline-seekers—safely secured in a harness and attached to a safety device at all times—a taste of everything with more than 55 challenging obstacles, elements and Sky Trek Aerial Adventure Park at the ziplines, which can reach over 50 feet. The attraction, which will allow the center to extend its operating season well into the fall, is easily visible from both Interstate 70 and Colorado Adventure Center Photo by Jeffrey V. Smith Stanley Road just east of Dumont. “I think the stoke has been pretty high. Everyone seems to be thrilled. All smiles getting off,” Sales and Marketing Manager Matt Espy said. “We’ve had everything from elementary school birthday parties to big cooperate groups up there, and everyone is having a blast. I think it is really cool to have a product like that where four-year-olds are getting off of it having had a blast… and then there’s grandma. We have had three generations up there at once playing together.” The course has a minimum age of four, minimum reach of 46 inches and maximum weight of 270 pounds. Sky Trek is $49 for adults and $44 for youth 12 and under. Each person is allowed up to two hours to explore the features, but a great deal of fun can be had in a much shorter period of time. The new aerial adventure park expands Colorado Adventure Center’s offerings which also include rafting and a high-tower zipline experience. The zipline is one of the highest, longest and most exhilarating ziplines in the state and features eight lines and speeds up to 40 miles per hour. The longest line offers up a quarter mile of flight time. Lawson Adventure Park offers the most individual activities of any one location including the Zorb, a nine-foot diameter inflatable ball filled with five gallons of water and providing the rider a refreshing experience while tumbling down a specially-designed woodlands course and up and around giant embankments. On-site lodging options include camping spots, yurts and luxury cabins. The Cliffside Zipline Course at AVA Colorado Zipline is located on the side of a high cliff with stunning views and offers a zipping distance of 2,360 feet with extra elements between lines. Plan ahead, each attraction has its own height, weight, age requirements and offers a variety of package deals.

Georgetown jazz guitarist Jim Stahlhut (left)

Creating ‘pure art’ Photo by Jennifer Pund
By Jeffrey V. Smith GEORGETOWN ame or fortune is not what Georgetown jazz guitarist Jim Stahlhut seeks by creating music. His life-long goal is to write and perform music that is “pure art, more like a painting or sculpture.” Last year, the artist released a collection of songs, called “A Life’s Work,” featuring all original music. It’s something he wanted to do for years and finally pulled off with help from his talented musical friends, and wife, Barbara. “I named this CD ‘A Life’s Work’ because it has been my life,” Stahlhut said. “I have been a professional musician for 42 years. I have never had a real job; they scare me.” According to the guitarist, music has always been a “driving force” in his life. “I have spent my life trying to advance music and my musical abilities. I have spent years practicing six hours a day, six days a week,” he said. The music on the CD varies from “simple funky things” to “complicated jazz harmonic structures,” Stahlhut explained. Each composition reveals something about the musician, if only in its name. “My favorite tune is ‘The Angle of Incidence’ because I feel I reached a deeper emotional and harmonic place in my solo,” he said. “‘A Bad Dream’ is another one I like because of the layering of the parts and the eerie feel. ‘Anxiety’s Circle’ is there because anyone who knows me, knows I have bad anxiety problems.” Stahlhut, who feels the CD “came out great,” gives credit to the other performers on the disc, which include Seamus Blake on saxophone, Dave Easley on pedal steel guitar, Bob DeBoo on bass and Reggie Quinerly on drums. “I can say all of the guys in my band are great friends as well as musical collaborators. I have played with them all for 10 or 15 years,” he said. “My rule in the studio when we record is ‘play whatever is in your head.’ I rarely tell anyone what to play. Of course, I do write out the tunes.” Like with all of his recordings, to keep everything sounding as fresh as possible, Stahlhut recorded “A Life’s Work” live with “no punches” in under 13 hours, which he says is an “amazingly short” time. Six of the nine tunes were done in a single take.

A friendship with John Scofield nearly 20 years ago gave Stahlhut the opportunity to work with Blake, who was playing in the world-renowned jazz guitarist’s band at the time. “John said Seamus would be perfect because of his musical ability and his musical positivity,” Stahlhut said. Blake also introduced Stahlhut to Systems Two in Brooklyn, “because it was one of the best jazz studios in the world and the people were easy to work with.” Another friend introduced Easley, who was working with the Brian Blade Fellowship band, to Stahlhut’s world. He’s now played pedal steel on the last four of the guitarist’s CDs. “Dave and I are always on the same page harmonically,” he explained. DeBoo was used on “A Life’s Work,” according to Stahlhut, “because he is the best bass player on the planet.” Drummers have changed throughout the years, but Reggie Quinerly, who has played on three of Stahlhut’s last four CDs, “nailed it” on the new recording. In addition to his band, Stahlhut explains he relies heavily on his wife, Barbara, who is the co-producer for his last five CDs. “She is a perfectionist and does the best job possible in every area she covers. She makes it so that I can focus on the music, musicians, and keeping everything running smoothly and on time,’ he said. Clear Creek County photographer Doug Glidden, who is a cohost with Stahlhut Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. on KYGT’s “The Jazz Extravaganza” show, took the cover photos. “Doug has also been a musical inspiration to me simply by choosing great music for the radio show,” he said. The CD can be purchased at jimstahlhut.com, on Amazon.com and CDBaby.com. Stahlhut, who has performed in a wide variety of settings from 5,000-person concerts to the extremely intimate Troias Restaurant in Georgetown, still can be found playing a couple of shows a month in Georgetown and live on KYGT. In the end, Stahlhut is most proud that he even has a reason to assemble his life’s work onto a CD. “I have been lucky to play music my whole life. Very few people can do that successfully. I have Barbara, and my own drive, to thank for that.”

By Jennifer Pund FLOYD HILL eki Fiala uses her favorite flavors from extensive traveling to create what she calls “international street food with a mountain twist” at her Wanderlust Market food truck. High-quality, organic and fair trade items like breakfast burritos, pasties, rice bowls and drinks from a full-service barista station are some of the more popular options. Fiala, a Floyd Hill resident, decided to open her own café and market five years ago when she became “sick of working for people.” About three years ago, she purchased property and began manifesting her vision. Fiala has worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry from a young age and feels the business is a way to express her unique style. As the business grows, so will her plans for the market side, which eventually will be part of a permanent structure she plans to build on the site. “The initial concept plan… is a halfcafé and half-general store, which works great in these little communities,” Fiala said. She’s also hosting yoga events. The name came easy for Fiala. “Clearly everyone is on a journey somewhere, between the commuters and people coming through on their way to somewhere like Moab or California,” she explained. Also, her own travels have taken her to 29 countries. “My one and only desire in life is just to keep traveling and experience different cultures and bring…

some of that culture back with me,” she said. “I really love international cuisines that take the slow cooking process seriously. That’s why I do a lot of the stewed-type curry and the Thai beef that are a longer process to cook, but then it’s ready and quick out the door,” Fiala said. “I have fun playing with flavors. When traveling, I like to learn how they make different items and what goes into the cooking the process.” Wanderlust Market’s drink menu features a variety of drinks made with coffee from Denver’s Coda Coffee and teas from The Spice & Tea Exchange in Idaho Springs. The breakfast menu offers sweet rolls, scones, muffins, fruit and yogurt parfaits and three breakfast pasties (stuffed pastry). “[The pasty’s] origin is the mining communities in Cornwall, so miners could eat with dirty hands… with our Henderson Mine and all the miners in the area, it just seemed like an appropriate thing to bring here,” Fiala said. For lunch there are “Mason Jar Salads” with Asian chicken salad, bean salad or pasta salad options and a variety of flavorful combinations served as a pasty, burrito or rice bowl. Open daily at 6:30 a.m., Fiala serves graband-go options to eat and drink; perfect for work, home and on the trail. It’s easy to reach from Floyd Hill neighborhoods, Clear Creek County High School or Interstate 70, just off Exit 247/248. Call, text or Facebook message ahead to have an order ready when you arrive.
