uring the busy gift-buying season that begins this month, be sure to spend time shopping in your community and supporting local businesses, especially on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24. Many benefits come from staying local and shopping small. Money spent in the community will go back into it in the form of creating employment opportunities. According to the Small Business Administration, the 28 million small businesses in America account for 54 percent of all sales in the U.S. Plus, small businesses have provided 55 percent of all jobs and 66 percent of all new jobs since the 1970s. When you make a purchase at a small business, you are doing your part to stimulate the local economy. Shopping at small businesses helps keep money within the neighborhood. A series of studies by the research firm Civic Economics found 48 percent of purchases at local independent businesses go back into the community compared to less than 14 percent of sales made at chain stores. By shopping at a business in the neighborhood, you’ll most likely stop by other independent retailers in the vicinity. You can also get away from the mass-produced items found at big box chains by shopping at an independent retailer which offer locally-made gifts and products. By participating in Small Business Saturday, you can be sure local independent businesses thrive and continue adding to the vibrancy and uniqueness of a community. Clear Creek County a great place to browse boutiques and other one-of-a-kind small businesses. From unique dining experiences to shopping and thrilling attractions, there is truly something for everyone in the mountain communities of Idaho Springs, Dumont, Downieville, Lawson, Empire, Georgetown and Silver Plume. Visit clearcreekcounty.org for a complete list of shops, restaurants, activities, lodging options and more.

The festival is free for all ages with events in Strousse Park, Gateway Visitor Center, Georgetown Loop Railroad and locations throughout town. Opportunities are available all day to watch and learn about bighorn sheep, plus, wildlife experts will be on hand at the Gateway Visitor Center and Strousse Park to give educational presentations and answer questions. During this time of year, the bighorns head down the valley for warmer environments for the winter and spend time just across I-70 from Georgetown. “Georgetown is one of the few places in Colorado you are almost guaranteed to see bighorn sheep, particularly during breeding season in November and December,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife Education Coordinator Mary McCormac said. Be sure to
stop by the Bighorn Sheep Viewing Station next to Georgetown Lake and the Georgetown Gateway Visitor Center to use spotting scopes. The festival features something for everyone. Children will have an opportunity to win prizes and learn about bighorn sheep by participating in bighorn sheep and wildlifethemed games. There will also be face painting and crafts for children. Adults can enjoy music, vendors and the Guanella Pass Brewery patio. Artisans and shop owners in Georgetown will also showcase wildlife related art, gifts, crafts and other goods. Colorado Division of Wildlife staff will be set up at the Georgetown Loop Railroad’s Devil’s Gate Station to tell guests about Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. This year the festival includes the “Bighorn Sheep: Rock Stars of the Rockies” photo contest with First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention prizes. Details can be found online. DID YOU KNOW? SHOOTING RANGE CONSTRUCTION BEGINS
Construction is beginning on the Devil’s Nose Shooting Range along Colo. Highway 103 near Idaho Springs, and new restrictions are in place for the duration of construction activities. For everyone’s safety, the area within a halfmile of the construction site north and west of Highway 103 is now closed to the public for all uses. At completion, the project will create a safe and resilient shooting environment by installing benches, lanes and backstops, parking and educational information. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has provided $597,000 in grants to date to help fund the design and engineering costs, the National Rifle Association has contributed $25,000 in grants, and Clear Creek County is providing an in-kind contribution of constructing the entrance and road to the Range during the fall of 2018 and spring of 2019. Construction is currently active and may continue through the spring and summer of 2020. The Devil’s Nose Shooting Range is a key component of the Northern Front Range Sports Shooting Management Partnership goal of providing safe, responsible and accessible recreational sport shooting opportunities. It has been identified as one of a handful of pivotal public shooting ranges needed to implement potential new restrictions identified by a National Forest draft decision on the Recreational Sport Shooting Management Project. SKI PATROL BENEFIT The first ever Evergreen Snowdance, Nov. 9, 6-9 p.m., is a preseason après-ski party at the Lariat Lodge Brewing Co., 27618 Fireweed Dr. in Evergreen, to benefit the Loveland Volunteer Ski Patrol. For a $10 suggested donation, enjoy ski movies, raffles and live music on the patio and in the bark garden. Funds from the event will be used to update non-emergency-related equipment including a laptop and candidate training shells. The Loveland Volunteer Ski Patrol had been serving the public at Loveland Ski Area for over 50 years. The more than 120 dedicated and highly-trained volunteers each spend more than three weeks a season assisting and treating distressed and injured visitors at no cost. The efforts of the organization are largely supported through the dues of its own members, but the essential gear and equipment used by the patrol often exceeds its budget. The Volunteer Ski Patrol is always looking for advanced to expert alpine and telemark skiers and riders who want to be a part of an organization dedicated to helping fellow skiers while enjoying a favorite winter sport. To support the organization at any time, donate by visiting rally.org/ LovelandSkiPatrol.

Ski Season Preview Area resorts debut new lifts, terrain, amenities

olorado’s 2018-19 ski season is underway. A “high-energy crowd” of skiers and snowboarders celebrated the official start of the season, Oct. 19, when Arapahoe Basin Ski Area opened for daily operations. A similar scene was found the following day at Loveland Ski Area when it began spinning its lifts for the season. Opening day signals the start of another world-class winter in Colorado, where life-long skiers, new participants and those looking to enjoy the mountain environment can enjoy Colorado’s consistently great winter conditions, bluebird skies and warm welcome. Significant snowfall in October allowed the ski areas—both of which are located along the Continental Divide between Clear Creek and Summit counties—to begin snowmaking early and kick-off the season without delay. The early-season snow gave Wolf Creek Ski Area in southwest Colorado the opportunity to unofficially start the season with weekend skiing and riding beginning Oct. 13. Most other area resorts start welcoming skiers and riders by mid-November. “The early season snowfall has created momentum and excitement for the opening of the ski season here in Colorado,” Colorado Ski Country USA President and CEO Melanie Mills said. “After months of hard work and millions of dollars of investment in the guest experience, Colorado is ready to welcome skiers, snowboarders and guests to our ski areas, whether they’re long-time Colorado skiers or first-time visitors. Winter has arrived in the Colorado mountains and it’s great to see winter sports enthusiasts out in force.” Colorado Ski Country USA member resorts—including Loveland, Echo Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Winter Park, Eldora, Copper Mountain and Granby Ranch—as well as Breckenridge and Keystone, spent the off-season working on major upgrades. Across the state, six new chairlifts, six new dining experiences and two terrain expansions debut this season. Many of these new improvement projects are at resorts in this area, all of which have new experiences awaiting their guests this season.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area
When it opened in mid-October, Arapahoe Basin debuted its The Beavers four-person chairlift and an expanded The Beavers and The Steep Gullies areas for intermediate and expert guests. “We are all getting excited about the start of our ski season. It is here, and we are ready to go,” Director of Marketing and Communications Leigh Hierholzer said. A-Basin opened approximately 371 acres of new terrain last season as a “preview.” This summer, operations crews constructed 97 more acres of tree skiing and continued improving the rest of the terrain with grading, glading and installation of a new chairlift and picnic areas. Opening this season, II Rifugio at Snowplume offers guests the experience of a mountain-top European-style delicatessen. “You have spectacular, high-alpine views in every direction from that building. It’s the perfect location to have that Europeanstyle dining experience,” Food and Beverage Director Christopher Rybak said.
Copper Mountain
For this season, Copper Mountain debuts its new American Flyer and American Eagle chairlifts that will significantly increase uphill access from the base area. The American Flyer is now a high-speed, six-person chair with bubble enclosures and The American Eagle is a high-speed combination lift with both six-person chairs and eight-person gondola cabins. A new base area restaurant, Downhill Duke’s, also debuts this season. Named after a beloved dog, it will welcome guests and their four-legged friends for lunch and après cocktails. The resort opens on Nov. 16.
Echo Mountain
Echo Mountain kicks off its season with a new tubing hill serviced by a covered conveyor lift. It also expanded the beginner learning area, increased snowmaking capacity and will offer RFID access gates for direct-to-lift access. This season, the Ambassador program, which is included with a day lift ticket, expands. “We will have Ambassadors in our beginner area as well as on the mountain offering coaching, tips, and suggestions to help guests… progress at their own pace and will only offer advice when guests want to know where to start or how to make that CLEAR CREEK
next turn,” General Manager Paula Vogel said. The ski area opens on Nov. 23.
Eldora
A year after installing the Alpenglow six-person chairlift, the ski area debuts RFID pass technology. New glading projects and upgrades to Eldora’s electrical and communication systems will also give guests more reasons to smile, as will more frequent early-season and mid-week events and activities. Eldora opens on Nov. 16.
Granby Ranch
This season, Granby Ranch offers groups an opportunity to rent the ski area’s entire East Mountain for an evening. Guests will have full access to the East Mountain night skiing terrain from 59 p.m. The resort plans to open on Dec. 14.
Loveland Ski Area
When it opened in October, Loveland Ski Area unveiled its new lift, Chet’s Dream, the first high-speed quad in the ski area’s history. Named after the ski area’s longtime owner, Chet Upham Jr., Chet’s Dream is the “big news” for this season since its the largest single capital improvement project in the ski area’s history. (See page 16)
Winter Park Resort
New this season, Winter Park Resort features a new 10-person gondola, the resort’s first new on-mountain lift installation since 2007. The gondola also serves a new daily Mountaintop Sunset Après at the Lodge at Sunspot with live music on Fridays and Saturdays. Foot passengers can ride for free without a lift ticket beginning at 2:30 p.m. each day. Winter Park also upgraded its snowmaking system and Zephyr Plaza in the Winter Park Village. The Winter Park Express train service from Denver to Winter Park also returns for a third season with additional Fridays added as well as a lounge car for food and beverages. The resort opens on Nov. 14.
Breckenridge & Keystone Ski Areas
Breckenridge Ski Area and Keystone Ski Resort, both owned by Vail Resorts, have experienced many years of terrain expansion and improvements to amenities. The new “Chet’s Dream” debuted at Loveland Ski Area’s Opening Day, Oct. 20. Photos by Jeffrey V. Smith
Living the Dream L
oveland Ski Area opened this year’s ski season, Oct. 20, with a brand new lift, “Chet’s Dream.” The name was chosen from the close to 3,000 entries in a contest and honors the ski area’s founder, who passed away in 2008. “Chet’s Dream is the big news for this season, Marketing Director John Sellers said. “This new high-speed quad from Leitner-Poma replaced Lift 1 and will shorten the ride time from about eight minutes to under three minutes. As our first high-speed lift and the largest single capital improvement project in the history of the ski area, this is a significant investment in the future of Loveland.” Lift 1 was in service for more than 30 years. Once work was underway on the new lift, a contest to name it was opened to the public. Nearly three thousand entries were recived and Loveland’s Board of Directors selected a winner. Loveland Season Pass holder and former Ski Patroller Terry Henningson suggested the winning name, which is in honor of Chester R. “Chet” Upham, Jr., the founder of Loveland. He won a chair from the old lift. Not everyone can dream big, but Chet Upham could. From the beginning, Chet had a vision for Loveland that transcended what others had seen. He became a partner in Loveland Ski Tow Company in 1956 and immediately convinced the other partners it was time to install what would be Loveland’s first chair lift and only the third such lift in Colorado, Lift 1. While a major force in the formative years from 1956, it was when Chet bought out the other partners in 1972 that the true potential for Loveland was realized. From that day forward, the Upham Family has owned and operated Loveland Ski Area. Chet’s dedication and love for the ski area were legendary. He invested both time and money to build an affordable ski experience and wanted everyone who came to Loveland to feel as though they were guests of the owners. One of his favorite quotes was “if we’d get a dime, we’d spend it on improvements up there (Loveland),” the Upham Family said. That philosophy continues today and Chet’s dream endures. “I was on Loveland’s Ski Patrol for a few years in the late nineties and had the pleasure of meeting Chet a few times,” said Terry Henningson. “Because he was so passionate and played such a big role in developing Loveland into what it is today, I thought that this would be an appropriate way to honor his legacy.” Chair 1, the first chair on the first day Visit skiloveland.com or call 303-571-5580 for snow conditions, open trails and of operations was sent up the hill with complete information about the 2018-19 season.

Harald Harb describes in detail how to use the Primary Movements Teaching System to become an expert skier. Thousands of skiers have improved beyond their expectations simply by following the steps in the book. This is the best “starting point” for all skiers to learn the fundamentals of PMTS Direct Parallel technique. Address:

iana Rogers wants to make you a better skier —“whatever the ski, whatever the experience.” With her company’s full-service ski shop, ski camps, instructional videos and books, along with her intimate knowledge of alignment and technique, she’s certain she can help anyone— no matter what skiing goals they have—increase their confidence, ability and comfort on the slopes. The former aerospace engineer runs the headquarters of Harb Ski Systems, a business she started with international ski racer Harald Harb in 1997, from a “little dive” situated along Interstate 70 Exit 235 at Dumont. Rogers and the store have become a “one-stop provider for skiing improvement” that has attracted attention from skiers around the world and down the street. “I love skiing, and it is sort of heartbreaking for me when somebody has had an experience where they end up not liking it,” Rogers said. “I totally get it if you’re not into the speed or something, but if you’ve tried and were stuck in a snowplow, I can probably fix that.” Harb Ski Systems developed out of Harald’s extensive experience on the slopes racing on the World Cup circuit with the Canadian National Ski Team and as a coach and instructor. Once he began working with recreational skiers, he became convinced ski teaching systems needed improvement. This led to his creation of the Primary Movements Teaching System, now known as Direct Parallel, and the Harb Skier Alignment System so new skiers could learn to ski quickly and easily. Rogers became a proponent of Harb’s technique before they even met. “I saw him ski—and I can still see his first run in my head—and I went ‘that’s how I’ve always wanted to ski. I want CLEAR CREEK
that,’” she explained. Harb and his methods also emphasize alignment. After a lifetime of being told she “just didn’t get it” with her left leg, Harb told Rogers she was slightly bowlegged and had her step on a small piece of plastic that turned her foot in a certain way. That was all it took. “This whole piece of knowledge just opened up,” she said. “I was like holy smokes, I need to be able to do this for people. Instantly, all the people I had ever taught who had struggled, I recognized it wasn’t their fault… Not everybody’s feet and legs are built the same or work the same. To think we can all step into a boot and ski the same is silly.” Harb Ski Systems, recognized as a world leader in modern ski technique and instruction, now attracts clients from as far away as Taiwan and Australia and connects with others from around the world via the internet, but Rogers would like to reach more locals. “I know some people shy away from coming in thinking we are going to sell them a ski boot. That’s not what we do,” she said. “We work with many people who have their boots and their equipment, so if you have a little wiggling thing in your foot, come see us… it’s going to change your experience.” Anyone who does decide to purchase new equipment is rewarded with custom equipment and a lifetime of fittings. “I want you to be happy out there when you’re putting your boots on and off, all the way up to having a complete system that works for you. We want you to be happy out there,” Rogers said. “Whatever your motivation or level of participation in the sport, we want to find that out and make you happy.
