TAKE NOTE

N

ational Library Week, April 7- 13, is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support. From free access to books and online resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and retraining, libraries offer opportunity to all. The theme for 2019 National Library Week is “Libraries = Strong Communities,” and Gates Foundation Co-founder Melinda Gates is the 2019 Honorary Chair. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association and observed in libraries across the country each April. All types of libraries—school, public, academic and special—participate. The theme for this year’s celebration of National Library Week reminds the public that libraries of all types serve as change agents that strengthen communities by supporting community engagement and providing services that connect closely with patrons’ needs. “In addition to providing communities with access to ideas and information, libraries play an important role in our public life by encouraging creativity, promoting equality, and serving as a source of empowerment,” Gates said. “This week, and every week, library workers deserve our support and our gratitude.” Take the time this month to explore the employee’s and locations of the Clear Creek County Library District including the Idaho Spring Public Library, 219 14th Ave., the John Tomay Memorial Library, 605 6th St. in Georgetown, and the Local History Archives, 809 Taos St. in Georgetown. National Library Workers Day, April 9, is the perfect day to stop in to thank district employees for their dedication. In addition to a wide-range of reading material and other information resources, the libraries offer many exciting programs “designed to inspire, enliven, and connect you with our unique community.” As of January, the branches no longer charge fines for overdue reading materials, and existing fines for overdue reading materials have been erased. The district also launched a new website in March. The “gateway to exploration” is “a passport to discovery in Clear Creek County and the world beyond.” Visit cccld.org to learn more. The Evergreen Library, 5000 C.R. 73, celebrated 25 years in its current building last December. As one of Jefferson County Public Library’s mountain locations, it offers a wide range of resources, classes, book groups, workshops and events. Visit jeffcolibrary. org/locations/EV to learn more.

Workshop focuses on summer avalanche danger

T

An avalanche can occur any time snow is found on a steep slope.

Support search-and-rescue teams with a Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue Card. Five-year cards are $12 and one-year cards are $3 at colorado.gov.

his year’s exceptionally dangerous avalanche season has made awareness and preparation for backcountry adventures more important than ever, even into summer. The danger doesn’t end with the change in seasons as avalanches are possible any time snow is found on steep slopes in Colorado. Anyone who hikes the backcountry and enjoy reaching the summit of our high peaks in the spring and early summer need to be ready for the upcoming conditions, which will be unique from recent years and different from winter. The Alpine Rescue Team, a search-and-rescue team of 70 non-paid professional rescue mountaineers that works with Clear Creek, Jefferson and Gilpin counties, continues its Skills for the Hills public wilderness and backcountry education program with “Spring & Summer Avalanches: Strategic Decisions for Peak Baggers,” April 23, 7-9 p.m. at the Alpine Rescue Team Headquarters, 28802 Rainbow Hill Road in El Rancho. Attendees will learn about wet avalanches and what to look for safer travel in the high peaks from local expert Dale Atkins. The event is free with advance registration and open to all ages. Donations for the group will be accepted. Snow-filled couloirs can offer direct routes to summits and quick, fun descents, but those routes become dangerous avalanche paths when the snow turns wet. For springtime and earlysummer peak climbers, wet snow avalanches are a very different beast than their dry-snow winter cousins. According to Alpine Rescue Team, wet snow avalanches are “more similar to an angry swarm of bees than the lone, reclusive rattlesnake that portrays the dry snow avalanche.” With more than 30 years of experience working with avalanches Alpine team member Atkins trains and works with avalanche professionals and rescuers around the world. He has extensive avalanche experience as a rescuer, forecaster, researcher, educator and technology developer while working in recreation, industry and government domains. He honed his skills while working 20 years with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Along the way, he also included 20 years of professional ski patrolling, and has more than 40 years of mountain rescue experience. Other upcoming Skills for the Hills workshops include “In-depth Navigation with GPS,” April 13 from 8 a.m.-noon; “Lightning, Hypothermia and AMS,” April 18, 7-9 p.m.; “Group Dynamics and Backcountry Travel,” April 25, 7-9 p.m.; and “Technical Rock Climbing Safety,” May 16, 7-9 p.m. Register for Skills in the Hills workshops at eventbrite.com, call 303-526-2417 or e-mail psar@alpinerescueteam.org. Musician returns ‘home’ to play intimate show

By Jeffrey V. Smith

M GEORGETOWN

usician Nathan McEuen has led quite an eventful life since he attended King Murphy Elementary School in Evergreen and moved from his childhood home in Clear Creek County. He’s performed on some of the world’s biggest stages including American Idol, The Tonight Show, The Stagecoach Festival, The Grand Ole Opry along with more than 2,000 other shows in venues of all sizes around the world. He’s also worked with top artists including Bon Jovi, Steve Martin, Vassar Clements, Willie Nelson, Kenny Loggins, Leon Russell, Billy Bob Thornton, Brad Paisley, Dwight Yoakam, John Denver and, of course, his father John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Despite all of his success, McEuen—who performs with David Starr at the Georgetown Heritage Center, April 19—can’t wait to get back to a place he calls “home.” “One thing I am ultimately excited about is that Colorado was the first state I toured through on my own. It’s my home in my heart that I go back to every year. I go visit my childhood home and my friends. For me, I love playing Georgetown because it’s honestly—and as cheesy as this sounds—it feels like coming home, and I love it,” McEuen said. The musician writes and performs an Americana-style of music, which includes folk, rock, country and bluegrass on guitar and banjo. He also sings. The Georgetown show will feature McEuen and Starr. “He’ll open the show and we’ll jam out some songs toward the end of the night together. It will sure pack the punch, you know. It will be rockin’, but it will be acoustic,” McEuen explained. Starr, who has recently been producing and recording with John Oates, was the first person to hire McEuen when he began touring in Colorado 18 years ago. “I love playing music with David… he has a really cool message, he has great songs, and it’s like he’s so soulful,” McEuen said. “I’m just excited that he had [time] available and wanted to do a couple of shows with me in Colorado, and Georgetown happened to be one.” McEuen, who moved away from the county with his family at age nine, is still connected to the area. He’s even played in the Georgetown Fourth of July Parade several times. He also enjoys performing in intimate spaces like the room in Georgetown, even if it is a bit more nerve racking, because it allows him to connect with his audience. “The fun thing about the music and where my career has taken me, has been… CLEAR CREEK

that no matter if there is one person or opening for Bon Jovi for over 19,000 people, for me it’s just about connecting and being in the moment,” McEuen explained. “That’s why I to want to throw myself into all sort of situations. It’s like a sink or swim, how you going to handle this? After a while… you start learning how to have fun with it.” Although connecting with his audience is important to McEuen, having fun with his career is the main goal. He’s not worried about album sales as much as making sure he’s still happy making them. “What this is all about, entirely, the music and this career… is to have fun with it. Just follow that,” he said. “I don’t know if selling a million records would make me feel much different, as opposed to five million or 100,000 or whatever, my point is… just have fun with the experience. If you can hold to Nick Regester, George Downthat, everything else seems ing and Nathan McEuen in the to fall into place. That really of July Parade. seems to be what’s happening Georgetown 4thPhoto by Gary Regester [to me] more and more these days, and I’m thankful and feel lucky that I still get to play music and that it resonates with so many people.” Although McEuen has famous relatives in the business, including his father and brother, Jonathon, he has carved his own path through the music industry and has remained independent, choosing to release his six solo albums on his own label. “The independent stance comes from watching a lot of people in the business who have gone down certain paths of being less independent,” McEuen said. “I think personally for me, I’m just trying to have it start in an authentic way, and if it catches on… then I feel that will be the most potentially legitimate way to have a solid music career. I think preferring it to be that way or not at all is where I’ve come to in life.” McEuen is currently working with Mason Williams on a new recording project, his first in five years, and is raising funds at indiegogo.com. Spectrum will include more than 30 songs and McEuen envisions the double album as a way to consolidate his “musical world” into a single “calling card.” “After almost 40 years of being alive and being surrounded by music, this is my reflection back to the world,” he said.
