TAKE NOTE
A
lthough mostly viewed as the end to the final weekend of summer, Labor Day, Sept. 2, represents much more than a day off work and backyard cookouts. The holiday is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on Feb. 21, 1887. During the year four more states—Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York—created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and territories. The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday—a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in areas where mass displays and huge parades are problematic. The change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and expression. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage.

By Jeffrey V. Smith IDAHO SPRINGS ong-time Clear Creek County resident Carolyn Gingrich opened Dancing Dog Pet Supplies in Idaho Springs a year ago to fill a void in the community for quality pet foods, treats, gear and gifts. Since then, she has been fine-tuning her inventory to the needs and special requests of Clear Creek County residents and tourists alike, while making connections with her customers and their beloved pets. Celebrate the store’s one-year anniversary with Gingrich and her loyal rescue dog Ranger, Aug. 17, noon-5 p.m. There will be a party in the parking lot with snacks for people and treats for dogs. Charlie’s Place Animal Shelter will also hold an adoption event. “As long as I can remember, I have felt an affinity and connection to animals of all kinds, and I feel that connection has grown stronger as I’ve gone through life,” Gingrich said. “A strong part of my personal beliefs is that all life is deserving of respect, love, and dignity, which influences the choices I make when purchasing for Dancing Dog. I look for products I know will be safe, healthy, and beneficial to the pet using them. I purposefully steer clear of certain products I feel could potentially harm or endanger a pet. I will freely discuss these points with customers so they can make their own best choice.” Although Gingrich’s original plan was to open a dog day care and capitalize on her years of experience volunteering at Charlie’s Place animal shelter, she quickly realized it would be a difficult endeavor. Because she had already rented a building for the new business, one of the town’s oldest, she moved forward with the pet supply store idea. Now the building even

has a new paint job compliments of the owner and a matching grant from the town. According to Gingrich, Clear Creek County residents are figuring out her store is much more convenient than other options, especially on days with heavy highway traffic. She also does her best to “keep my prices as low as I can.” “It’s also been very tourist friendly. I’m surprised how much tourist traffic I get,” she said. “People Google ‘Pet Supplies’ and I’m the only one that pops up. People come in every single day and say, ‘I forgot my leash,’ or ‘we need a harness’ or ‘we’re going on a hike and I need some treats or a collapsible water bowl’ or just things they left behind. I get a lot of that.” The store’s inventory is built around the many special requests she receives, especially when it comes to food, with a goal of providing whatever the community and visitors need. “We welcome requests for new products. My goal is to provide whatever our community and visitors are looking for; it’s how I’ve built the inventory,” Gingrich explained. “If there is something I don’t carry, please let me know and I’ll see if I can acquire it and keep it stocked.” An especially popular item at the store are Suzie’s CBD Treats. Gingrich offers CBD biscuits in three flavors as well as bottled drops for toy breed dogs and cats and 250mg, 500mg, and 1000mg drops. “I am extremely happy with the results and feedback I’ve had,” Gingrich said. Dancing Dog is also working to fill the needs of other small pet owners and now carries ferret food, small animal bedding, chicken feed and cracked corn, as well as bird food and suet. Gingrich plans to continue expanding and adding more brands to her spacious store. She also hopes to add visits from a mobile groomer and continue obedience training courses.

John McEuen returns to Silver Plume to highlight 50-year career
M
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will the Circle be Unbroken album is “one of the most important records to come out of Nashville,” according to Chet Flippo of Rolling Stone magazine. 18
By Jeffrey V. Smith usician John McEuen is well known to Clear Creek County residents. He’s lived in various parts of the county since he first moved to Idaho Springs in 1971, his kids grew up here and attended local schools, and he often played area venues until moving away in the 1990s. He’s, of course, also known for being a world-renowned, Grammy-winning, multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The musician returns to his former hometown of Silver Plume with “The String Wizards” to perform at the George Downing Playhouse, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 and support local historic preservation. McEuen assembled a “unique cast” of partners to help him share the music and memories of the landmark Will the Circle Be Unbroken album and his incredible 50-year career with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and beyond. A lot has happened since he last performed in the town more than 20 years ago. “Although I moved away in the 90s, my kids still call Clear Creek County home turf, and I do in many ways,” McEuen said. “After playing the high school several times, and the grade school and [the United Center] in Idaho Springs, I am now coming back. And, I’ve finally made it to Silver Plume; working my way up to the George Downing Theater. George was a great guy… I lived in Silver Plume for a couple of years, as well as Idaho Springs, and it’s just a neat thing. I feel like I’m coming to a family reunion.” McEuen’s own banjo, fiddle, mandolin and guitar work will be accompanied by original Nitty Gritty Dirt Band member Les Thompson on bass, vocals and bouzouki; John Cable—who toured with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on its ground-breaking Russia trip—on guitar, vocals and mandolin; and McEuen’s 25-year music partner, Matt Cartsonis, on vocals, mandola and guitar. For those that don’t know, an introduction to McEuen’s career runs the risk of being unreasonably long. He has continually performed at more than 8,500 concerts and 300 television shows since 1964 and founded the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1966. He has made over 40 albums that have earned four platinum and five gold recognition awards, Grammy nominations and awards, CMA and ACM awards, an Emmy nomination, IBMA record of the year award, and performed on another 25 albums as guest artist. He’s also produced more than 300 concerts throughout his career, the first in 1965 with Bob Dylan. He has also performed or recorded with Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Steve Martin, Phish, Crystal Gayle, Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, Leon Russell, Pete Seeger, Dizzy Gillespie, The Band, The Doors, Foreigner, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Little Richard, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Doobie Brothers and countless more. One of McEuen’s best loved and enduring achievements came early on when he initiated the Will the Circle Be Unbroken album soon after moving to Clear Creek County. The recording, which is in the Library of Congress and Grammy Hall of Fame, brought together icons of bluegrass and country—including Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, Vassar Clements and Maybelle Carter—with a new generation of West-coast country rock musicians. The benchmark record, still relevant today, was created in just six days in August 1971. “I was living in Idaho Springs and I drove over to Tulagi’s in Boulder to see Earl Scruggs many times and we had gotten to know each other,” McEuen explained. “That’s where I asked him if he’d record with us. And then a week later I asked Doc Watson when he was playing there. Then eight weeks later we were in Nashville recording. That was the beginning… That came about while I was living in the area and that’s important to me.” At the Silver Plume show, McEuen and the band will tell “funny stories behind some songs, and some of the funny
songs” along with performing their favorite “Dirt Band” songs and music from Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Expect hot bluegrass and rare, early Nitty Gritty Dirt Band music. A unique part of the show covers the band’s 1977 Russia trip, with its 28 sold out shows, and what happened behind the Iron Curtain. “We were the first American group to go to Russia in 1977,” McEuen said. “Gary Regester in Silver Plume, one of the world’s best photographers, went to Russia with us and shot hundreds of pictures.” The show will also include music used in an upcoming eight-part PBS miniseries on the History of Country Music by Ken Burns, which highlights McEuen in several episodes including the sixth one titled, “Will the Circle be Unbroken.” He will also showcase songs from his most recent album, Made in Brooklyn. “It’s an album I’ve put together with people that I’ve wanted to record with for years,’ McEuen said. “It features people like David Bromberg and Steve Martin and John Carter Cash and a whole plethora of pickers that I’ve wanted to record with for many years. We did 14 songs in two days surrounding one microphone, and it was really the best sounding I’ve ever done…
even if you don’t like the music you have to say, boy, that sounds good.” McEuen and his band are “looking forward to being in that building and in front of those people” and says he will probably recognize most everybody. “Playing the George Downing Theater is a really cool thing. It’s something that Clear Creek County should hold dear. Not because I’m there, but because of what they do. The Melodrama that has run there for years is a neat thing. It’s like harking back to the good ole days, not just the old days,” McEuen said. “It’s a good thing and there’s no valet parking. It’s very cool.” Other than McEuen, this will be everyone’s first time performing in Silver Plume although some have visited as their band leader always tries to stop in when traveling through Colorado. “I’ve been trying to work out a show there for a couple of years and this one worked out just perfect as far as traveling around with the guys,” McEuen said. “It’s really a fun thing to go to Silver Plume. It’s going to be good for us. We do about 10 cities a year, well in Silver Plume’s case I’m not sure you would call it a city; it’s a place, a place lost in time.”

COVER STORY
Summit Up! Bag a peak, large or small, to cool off naturally
A
ugust is the perfect month to seek out higher ground to beat the summer heat, enjoy some warmweather exercise and take in amazing vistas. Snow levels, despite the record amounts received this winter and spring, are nearing their lowest point at the same time temperatures are reaching their highest. When the heat is on in the mountains, the best solution is to go up. The mountain towns of Clear Creek County from Silver Plume to Idaho Springs, along with Central City and Evergreen, are at the doorstep of some of the more popular and accessible high-altitude destinations in the Front Range. While high-country residents may not be dealing with same extreme temperatures as down in the flatlands, it is nice that when an escape from the heat is needed, the solution is close at hand. National Summit Day, which kicks off the month on Aug. 3, is a celebration of summits and those who climb them. Not only is it a chance to get out and enjoy the heights, breathe the fresh air, and make memories with all the people who love those things, too, it’s also a great reminder to take advantage of the few remaining weeks local summits are accessible. Whether your summit is a 14er or something a little less daunting, boot up and hit the trail to join the community of hikers. Visit backpacker.com/nationalsummitday to register, locate group hikes and find suggestions on where to go. Clear Creek County offers a wide range of summit hikes for all experience levels. Some of the easier and most accessible 14er hikes can be found here. Grays Peak, Torrey’s Peak and Mount Bierstadt can all be

reached by relatively easy day hikes and are all located with 10 miles of each other. Until early October, the summit area of Mount Evans can be reached by passenger car on the highest paved road in the U.S. From the parking lot at the top, it’s a short walk up a well-maintained, but crowded, path to the top. There are also trails originating from lower elevations. There is no reason to go someplace simply because it’s on a list, so don’t limit yourself to 14ers. There are many other local peaks—including Chief Mountain, Saxon Mountain, Mt. Sniktau, Bard Peak and Mount Parnassus, James Peak, Squaw Mountain, Floyd Hill, Bergen Peak and many more—worthy of exploring, including the top of the hill behind your house. No matter where you go, once you reach the top be sure to take time to enjoy the view and appreciate your accomplishment. As with all trips to the backcountry, you need to be smart and be prepared. Among other precautions, choose an easy route your first time out, plan and study any routes you plan to take, be prepared for changing weather and bring multiple layers, hike with another person and tell others of your plans, start early, stay hydrated, fuel up before starting and along the route, take breaks, use sunscreen, bring a first aid kit and be sure to break in new boots before a big hike. Avalanche danger also exists in summer, so be aware and educated. While there are countless ways to get yourself to altitude in the summer, a few of the more popular and accessible places are mentioned here. Find a place you’ve never been or get inspired to look for relief some place all your own. Once you’ve gone higher, hiking, biking, climbing, sight-seeing and most other activities are all more enjoyable in the cool, thin air. A few suggestions of easily accessible, high-altitude locations are listed here. This is only a jumping off point, so be sure to explore and discover the many other options. LOVELAND PASS/ARAPAHOE BASIN Loveland Pass along U.S. 6 offers several high-altitude hikes above treeline to nearby mountain summits—including Mount Sniktau—and alpine lakes. Just over the county line is Arapahoe Basin

ski area, which offers lift rides to midmountain. Discover unparalleled vistas of the Continental Divide, explore the upper mountain and hike around the Argentine-North Fork Trail. GUANELLA PASS SCENIC BYWAY The Guanella Pass Scenic Byway is a great introduction to Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. The road crests well above timberline and is flanked by Mount Bierstadt and Mount Evans. Hikes to these 14ers, among other great routes, are easily accessible from the byway. MOUNT EVANS SCENIC BYWAY The Mount Evans Scenic Byway climbs more than 7,000 feet in 28 miles, reaching an altitude of 14,130 feet. The top five mile section of road to the Summit of Mount Evans Interpretive Site is scheduled to close for the season, Sept. 3. ST. MARY’S GLACIER St. Mary’s Glacier is located in the Historic Alice Mining District near Idaho Springs at the top of Fall River Road. The community is rich in history and the hike to St. Mary’s Glacier is one of the top tourist destinations in Clear Creek County. Keep going to reach the summit of James Peak or Kingston Peak. BERTHOUD PASS/CONTINENTAL DIVIDE Berthoud Pass, reached via Hwy. 40, at 11,307 feet features a trailhead located on the Continental Divide. It offers a variety of summer activities including hiking on the Continental Divide National

Scenic Trail or hike east to James Peak through the James Peak Wilderness. WINTER PARK SKI AREA Continue over Berthoud Pass to reach Winter Park Ski Area, which also offers chairlift rides for easy access to hikes on the upper mountain. ARAPAHOE/ROOSEVELT NATIONAL FOREST The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest encompasses 1.5 million acres and extends north to the Wyoming border, south of I-70 to Mount Evans and west across the Continental Divide. Trails throughout the forest provide numerous access points to the high elevations. Some of the highest mountain passes can be reached from trail heads all over the Clear Creek County region as well as in nearby Grand and Gilpin counties. JAMES PEAK WILDERNESS The 17,000-acre James Peak Wilderness is located in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests within Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties. Adjacent to the Continental Divide, it includes several peaks over 13,000 feet.
There are, of course countless other locations and ways to reach high-altitude locations. No matter where your preferred destination is located, try to get up to altitude while you can, whether escaping the summer heat or simply getting out into nature, to take advantage of areas that are only accessible a few months of the year.
