n Aug. 1, 1876, President Grant made Colorado the “Centennial State” and each year “Colorado Day” is celebrated with free admission to all state history museums, free access to all Colorado State Parks and other perks.

The United States Congress passed an enabling act on March 3, 1875, specifying the requirements for the Territory of Colorado to become a state. On August 1, 1876—28 days after the Centennial of the United States—U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant signed the proclamation admitting the state of Colorado to the Union as the 38th state and earning it the moniker “Centennial State.” The borders of the new state coincided with the borders established for the Colorado Territory.

At the History Colorado Center celebrate Colorado’s 143rd birthday by exploring the award-winning destination and hub of learning and entertainment. The center houses core exhibits along with traveling exhibitions through its Smithsonian Affiliation. On Aug. 1 make adobe bricks, do make-and-take crafts and see actors and reenactors. There will be a Farm Fresh tent, wildlife education table, botanicals and more.

At the Center for Women’s History at the Byers-Evans House Museum, there will be free guided tours once an hour on the half-hour from 10:30 am to 3:30 p.m..

Other museums with free admission on Colorado Day include: El Pueblo History Museum in Pueblo, Fort Garland Museum in Fort Garland, Fort Vasquez Museum in Platteville, Healy House & Dexter Cabin in Leadville, Trinidad History Museum in Trinidad, and Ute Indian Museum in Montrose.

Additional Colorado museums offer a free day to celebrate Colorado’s statehood including The American Museum of Western Art, 1727 Tremont Place in Denver and The Molly Brown House Museum.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife celebrates Colorado’s acceptance into statehood with free access to all Colorado State Parks, Aug. 3. Entrance fees are waived, but fishing and camping require a valid license and permit.

Numerous local businesses also get in on the celebration with special offers and freebies, Aug. 1.

Stirrup Some Fun GILPIN COUNTY

County fair returns with new events, attractions

C

lear Creek County doesn’t have its own fair and the Evergreen Rodeo is over, so take a short trip to Gilpin County and take advantage of having a true, rural county fair and rodeo close to home. The 27th Gilpin County Fair, July 12-14, returns to the Gilpin County Fairgrounds, 250 Norton Dr., with perennially popular rides, contests and events—including the Gilpin Gourmet Contest, Bulls & Beads Rodeo and pancake breakfast. This year, the free, family-friendly event, which drew 5,500 attendees last year, has many new additions and features an array of games, attractions and competitions.

This year, the fair begins with the “Fired Up Friday” kick-off party. Enjoy a community potluck, chili cook-off, goat happy hour, Royalty Presentation, paint party, free rides, glow-in-thedark capture the flag, a fire dancer and more from 6-9 p.m.

The Bulls & Beads Rodeo is the highlight of Saturday’s activities. It takes over the arena at 3 p.m. with bull riding, ranch broncs, mutton bustin’ along with performances by the Colorado Stampede Riders and Nederland Middle/Senior High School Orchestra. This year also features a Fair Parade on Saturday and the nationally-known dog performance group Extreme Dogs, which perform three times a day.

Saturday also includes the free Ameristar Breakfast, Horseshoes Contest, ATV Rodeo, Nederland School Orchestra, Battle of the Bands, Talent Contest and Karaoke Contest. Children ages 6-12 can participate in a Sheep Scramble.

The nationally-known mounted drill team Westernaires is the highlight of Sunday’s activities, which also include the High County Auxiliary Pancake Breakfast, Gymkhana horse competition, Log Splitting Contest, Cowboy Church, wood carving, Mutton Bustin’, drone flying exhibition and Dog Agility Contest.

Additional contests, including the Gilpin Gourmet, Photo, Home-Brewed Beer, and Fiber & Fabric Arts, are also planned during the weekend.

This year’s new rides include Human Hungry Hippos, Water Walkers, Bungee Run, Jousting and a giant Obstacle Course.

The fair also offers food, drinks, vendors, crafts and much more during both days.

DAM DUCKY DERBY

The Dam Ducky Derby, Aug. 3, 11 a.m.3 p.m., is now in its 10th year and annually draws 3,500 visitors to Evergreen with food and festivities throughout downtown, trolley horse rides on Main Street and the Duck Drop at Evergreen Dam at 1 p.m. Enjoy food, music, carnival games, bouncy house, face painter and more.

Everyone can participate in the Duck Derby by buying one or more of the numbered ducks. A fire truck drops them from above the dam to Bear Creek below.

Spectators follow the thousands of ducks as they head to the finish at Highland Haven Creekside Inn. Winning ducks are documented and cash prizes and sponsor gifts are awarded to the owners of the speediest ducks. There is $3000 in cash prizes and more for winners.

Three shuttle buses run between downtown and parking at Church of the Hills, Christ the King and Hiwan Museum.

DID YOU KNOW? Forest Supervisor Monte Williams recently signed the final decision on the Recreational Sport Shooting Management Project. The goal of the project is to provide safer opportunities for all forest visitors by identifying areas where recreational sport shooting is unsuitable.

The decision will protect public safety through restrictions on recreational sport shooting on 226,113 acres of the 1.4 million acre Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Other areas of the forest and around Colorado remain available for recreational sport shooting when following all rules and regulations. This decision will not affect lawful hunting with a firearm in areas where it is currently allowed.

Identified unsuitable areas, not already closed to recreational sport shooting, will not be closed until public shooting ranges are open as part of the decision.

A phased implementation plan will be coordinated with partners as public shooting areas are constructed. Many of the restrictions are contingent on shooting ranges being developed to maintain recreational shooting opportunities in those areas with the most restrictions. Details on the progress of shooting ranges can be found at the Northern Front Range Recreational Sport Shooting Management Partnership’s website.

The Partnership, which includes Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin and Larimer counties, has provided a localized perspective on safety issues and the desire for sustainable RSS activities they have heard from constituents. The Forest Service wants to remind everyone this decision is in addition to already established rules and regulations for recreational sport shooting.

PARKER THE SNOW DOG’S BIRTHDAY BASH Guanella Pass Brewing Company, 501 Rose St., hosts Parker the Snow Dog’s Third Birthday and everyone is invited to bring friendly dogs to join in the fun. Come to the brewery, July 13, noon-4 p.m. Parker’s party will also be a fundraiser for Rocky Mountain Village Easterseals and a food drive for Charlie’s Place, the Clear Creek/Gilpin Co. Animal Shelter.

Every dog that attends will get a Parker the Snow Dog sticker. There will also be a doggy costume contest.

For each beer purchased during the event, $1 is donated to the Rocky Mountain Village Easter Seals Camp.

Dog food donations will be accepted the day of the party. Bring any type of sealed dog food to the brewery and Parker will personally deliver it to Charlie’s Place. Last year brought in 270 pounds.

There is a silent auction featuring “sweet stuff” from Parker’s sponsors and partners. Last year more than $1,000 was raised. This year, all the money will go to Rocky Mountain Village Easter Seals Camp where Parker also works.

Only bring dogs up to date on shots and leashed that do well with other dogs and large crowds, as a large turnout is expected.

INDUSTRY LEADERS RECEIVE AWARDS Wrapping up Colorado’s 2018-19 ski season, Colorado Ski Country USA hosted its 56th Annual Meeting and the Double Diamond Award Ceremony to celebrate excellence in the Colorado ski industry. Three employees from nearby resorts were recognized for their outstanding performance and dedication: Food & Beverage Professional of the Year: Mary Corrigan, Arapahoe Basin Corrigan has worked in food and beverage for more than 12 years, including the last seven with A-Basin’s food and beverage department. This season, she was an integral part of both the conception and opening of the highest elevation restaurant in the U.S., Il Rifugio.

Ski Instructor of the Year: Donald Nieters, Winter Park Resort Nieters’ technical knowledge, empathy, passion, professionalism and dedication to lifelong learning have spurred him to the top of Winter Park Resort’s Ski and Snowboard School. His vision for the re-vamping of the 3-4-year-old lesson structure has been a huge success.

Ski Patroller of the Year: Scott Bickel, Arapahoe Basin Bickel is an outstanding role model and patroller with nine years of experience.

Coming to Arapahoe Basin by way of Keystone, he won A-Basin’s “A-Mazing” award in 2017. His work is recognized and appreciated company wide and is one of the most respected patrollers on the Arapahoe Basin team.

BUFFALO BILL DAYS FESTIVAL

Golden will again host its annual Buffalo Bill Days celebration, July 2528. The event dates back to the 1940’s as a trail ride up Lookout Mountain to Buffalo Bill’s grave. The Buffalo Bill Days Committee has expanded activities over time and it is now the largest community festival in Golden. It draws thousands of locals and residents from surrounding communities who enjoy bringing their families to a wholesome, small-town community event.

This year’s activities—which take place at Applewood Golf Course, Parfet Park and Lions Park ballfields— include Cody’s Wild West, the “Best of the West” theme Parade, Muttin’ Bustin’, live music, car show, a golf tournament, food and merchandise vendors and much more.

Clear Creek music festival moves to July IDAHO SPRINGS

C

elebrate the heart of summer with two days of mountain music, July 19-20, at the laid-back Clear Creek RapidGrass Music Festival. The acoustic- and bluegrass-oriented event, held at the Idaho Springs Ball Field Complex, 101 Idaho Springs Road, welcomes nationally-touring performers alongside some of Colorado’s most talented players. In addition to main stage performances, free workshops and small concerts take place on a second stage each day.

“What separates the Rapidgrass Festival is that it’s not like a big-name recognition scene or scenester party,” festival founder and co-organizer Mark Morris said. “It’s a listening festival and it features people who are virtuosic on their instruments rather than focused on just selling tickets.”

Headliners at this year’s festival include renowned acoustic musicians Mike Marshall and Darol Anger—known for their work with David Grisman and together—and locally-based RapidGrass. Rhythm Future Project, New England’s premier Gypsy jazz group featuring violinist Jason Anick and gypsy guitar legend Olli Soikkeli, also perform.

More than 20 years ago, two of contemporary string music’s greatest masters joined forces for the first time, setting in motion a partnership that would take them all over the world, exciting acoustic music lovers along the way. Marshall and Anger began making music together in 1978 as members of The David Grisman Quintet and continued stretching from solo and

duo records to the Montreux Band, Psychograss and The Anger/ Marshall Band. They have consistently been at the center of the acoustic music scene and can be heard on hundreds of recordings in the acoustic music world. Marshall’s mastery of mandolin, guitar and violin and his ability to swing gracefully between jazz, classical, bluegrass and Latin styles is rare in the community of American vernacular instrumentalists. Anger’s ability to be at home in a number of musical genres, some of which he helped to invent, have put him at the top of his field.

Acts coming to the festival from out of state include Utahbased Pixie & the Partygrass Boys, Arizona’s Sugar & the Mint and Billy Cardine from North Carolina. Colorado acts on the continued on page 13

The family-friendly festival features over 120 artists and craftspeople from across the country, music, and adult beverages. Artists bring a variety of mediums, including ceramics, digital art, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, wood, and more.

Admission is $5 for adults and children are free. All proceeds benefit the art center. Watch for signs for parking locations.

ARTS SCENE FEATURED WITH WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION The annual ARTSWEEK GOLDEN returns, July 8-14, with a week-long celebration of the arts orchestrated by the Foothills Art Center, 809 15th St., and culminating in the Foothills Fine Arts Festival, July 13-14, a weekend juried arts festival featuring national artists exhibiting in downtown Golden. The week-long festival includes activities that will take place throughout the entire historic town of Golden such as yarn-bombing of Golden sculptures, film screenings, chalk sidewalk masterpieces, and plein air painting.

Along with free admission to Foothills Art Center and Golden History Museum, ARTSWEEK GOLDEN includes numerous events around town. FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS INTIMATE VENUES, TRADITIONAL JAZZ The 18th annual Evergreen Jazz Festival, July 26-28, includes nearly 100 sets of live jazz performances in five distinctive, intimate venues. Audiences enjoy the up-close-and-personal listening experiences with top traditional bands playing Dixieland, ragtime, blues, swing and more.

A three-day pass to the non-profit, volunteer-run festival is $140. All day Friday and Sunday tickets are $75 each while tickets for a full day on Saturday are $110. Partial day tickets are also available. Free events, including an Educational Concert, July 26 at noon in the Elks Lodge Ballroom, are also offered. Dancing is encouraged at each performance, but the Friday evening session is designated as “Dance Night.”

PLEIN AIR EVENT BRINGS ARTISTS TO TOWN The Georgetown Cultural Arts Program presents its second Plein Air event in Georgetown, which has long been a favorite of artists. Artists will paint outside throughout town and Silver Plume, from 2 p.m. on Aug. 2 until 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 3. Judging is from 5-6 p.m. and a free Opening Reception follows from 6-8 p.m. at Georgetown Heritage Center, 809 Taos St. This year’s judge is Gilpin County artist Virginia Unseld.

he Grillin’ & Chillin’ Beer & Music Festival is back for its second year, Aug. 3-4, featuring two days of live music, craft beer, food trucks, games, vendors and more.

Admission is $5 in advance or $10 the day of the event and proceeds benefit the G.O.A.L.S. program of Idaho Springs. Craft and domestic beer, spirits, and food will be available for purchase.

Live music begins at noon on Saturday with a performance by School of Rock musicians until 2 p.m. A DJ keeps the music going before a set from Idaho Springs-based Kind Mountain Band from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The Nothing but Nineties band plays from 4:156:15 p.m. and RETRO: 80’s Tribute Band performs from 7-9 p.m.

School of Rock kicks off live music again on Sunday from noon-1 p.m. followed by Hoodratz from 1-2 p.m. Sammy Dee Blues Band takes the stage from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 9s a Pair – The Fireman Band performs from 5-7 p.m.

Throughout the day Saturday and Sunday the festival hosts games for kids and adults, contests, raffles and door prizes from noon to close. STEAKHOUSE UPDATES KITCHEN, MENU MTN Prime, which describes themselves as “a modern steakhouse in a historic town,” recently made some “positive” changes to its kitchen and menu including a transformation into a fully scratch kitchen. All of MTN Prime’s pastas, beef stocks, and other core ingredients are now made in-house. They have also made changes to lower prices on steaks that will now be cut in house and offer more options at lunch.

MTN Prime has gone to great lengths to make their menu approachable and accessible. It built a diverse and quality lunch menu which is now separate from the full menu. The Smoked Chicken Salad and Lobster Roll accompany favorites like hand-pressed burgers and the Pastrami Reuben. There are also re-imagined appetizers and new salads.

A new dinner menu follows suit. Start a dining experience with an order of Chorizo Mussels or Lobster Mac. After that, hit up the new Bourbon Glazed Bison Meatloaf or Blackberry BBQ Pork Shank. The popular Stroganoff and Alfredo Parmesan remain.

Brewery grows into its Hard Rock home

T

he town of Empire’s need for someone to run its Original Hard Rock Café, and a brewery owner’s desire to expand his business in a unique way, led to a much anticipated re-opening of the town’s popular restaurant and bar last October. Since then, Stein Brewing Company has been steadily expanding its offerings to compliment the high-quality, small-batch brews it has on tap.

“We were looking for opportunities to expand that would be more unique for us,” Owner John W. Stein said. “Our production was up, sales were up, and we were expanding into liquor stores and restaurants…. The opportunity was a unique way to grow the business while adding a food flare to complement our beer, while using beer to compliment food. We joke that, ‘we cook many of our foods with our beer… sometimes, we even add it to the food.’”

Stein Brewing Company at Hard Rock Café specializes in small-batch German and American beers which are brewed in its original Boulder location. Flagship beers include Rocky Rye Kölsch, a light, easy drinking Kölsch-style beer with Colorado hops; Pleasant Gentleman American IPA; Lisa Red IPA, a smooth red IPA with German red malt and American hops that add a subtle mango flavor; Hop Haze, an Imperial IPA that is hoppy with many fruity notes; Swans Loose Hefe, a Bavarian-style Hefeweizen with banana esters and hints of clove; Cuddly Monkey Distraction Dunkelweiss; Chocolate Milk Stout; and The Undertaker, a pale, complex, sweet Belgian ale with a pillowy head and CLEAR CREEK

9.2% abv. The beer selection, however, is always rotating to allow for fun test batches and seasonal brews to be mixed in.

The always rotating and expanding menu includes wings—featuring 12 flavors and growing—a massive nacho platter, fried fish and chips, wraps, burritos, chimichangas and burgers. Po’ Boys, more burger options, sandwiches, and deserts will be added soon.

A back deck was recently opened for patrons to enjoy the weather and views. In the near future, Stein plans to fence in the back-yard, landscape it and provide seating and outdoor games.

He expects to have events, special beer releases, and Great American Beer Festival specials.

Apart from the food and drink, social and corporate stewardship is important to their business model and each team member, according to Stein. “We are constantly teaming up with nonprofits for fundraisers, support local endeavors and functions and causes. Our tag line says it all: ‘Brewed with a cause, not just because.’ We have fun brewing… but know there is a bigger picture in life, responsibility, and meaning.”

Now that the Original Hard Rock Café location, 18 E. Park Ave., is back open—and features a large menu, fresh beer and a new retail section—it’s become an even more essential stop on the way to Berthoud Pass and Winter Park, as well as a great reason to make a quick trip to Empire. Billy Budd is a swashbuckling and thought-provoking tale of morality and memory. The compositions of Benjamin Britten have been an artistic compass for General and Artistic Director Pat Pearce during his 22-year tenure. He aims to produce the composer’s entire canon at Central City Opera. Billy Budd is a major landmark along the process, following The Burning Fiery Furnace (2017), The Prodigal Son (2015), The Turn of the Screw (2012), Curlew River (2008), The Rape of Lucretia (2008), Paul Bunyan (2005), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1974, 1977, 2002) and Gloriana (2001).

Britten’s work is considered a turning point in music history, and his visceral exploration of morality and human experience resonates with contemporary audiences.

“This year’s Billy Budd production is the largest show ever to be performed on the Central City Opera stage,” Pearce said. “Director Ken Cazan is returning for his 18th season with Central City Opera to bring another Benjamin Britten production to life. This production of Billy Budd features a score that was specifically adapted for Central City Opera in partnership with the Britten-Pears Foundation, Boosey & Hawkes, London and Maestro Steuart Bedford and is not to be missed.”

In addition to the two main stage productions, audiences have the opportunity to see two rarely performed works together as part of the Double Bill: The Blessed Damozel and Litanies to the Black Virgin. Silver Plume Beginning in the west, the small town of Silver Plume is home to the Bread Bar, 1010 Main St., a “fine mountainside drinking establishment” at the foot of the Continental Divide in an 1800s-era former bakery. Georgetown The small, historic town of Georgetown offers a surprising number of outstanding decks. Most establishments, including the local brewery, have a scenic place to relax outdoors while eating and drinking.

Enjoy a homemade breakfast, lunch or just a coffee on the outdoor garden patio at Happy Cooker, 412 6th St. They are “famous” for European waffles, eggs benedicts, homemade breads, soups, chili, and cobblers made fresh every day. Enjoy the atmosphere of being in the middle of Georgetown’s downtown historic district as well as the mountain views.

Located in the original Georgetown Depot, The Alpine Restaurant and Bar, 1106 Rose St., has a large deck out front perfect for taking in Georgetown’s scenic mountain setting.

The year-round deck at Coopers on the Creek, 1500 Argentine St., a restaurant “with a menu and ambiance that embodies the spirit of Colorado,” is adjacent to Clear Creek and provides an open-air dining experience, but under a roof. Their full bar and craft beer selection is also worth a visit.

At the start of the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway in Georgetown is Guanella Pass Brewing Company, 501 Rose St. It not only offers small-batch, craft beers, it boasts a deck with some of the best mountain and historic district views.

At the family-owned, Pho Bay, 1025 Rose St., offers the best pho in the mountains, a large dining room, full bar and an extended deck next to Clear Creek. The homemade food is made to order.

Empire Stop in the century-old Original Hard Rock Café, 18 East Park Ave., home to the second location of Boulder-based Stein Brewing Company. Seasonal favorites, test batches and new brews can be found at the taproom in Empire. Enjoy beautiful mountain views from the pet-friendly back deck while enjoying its “down-toearth good” craft beer selection and menu of American comfort food.

Also in Empire, the Dairy King provide a nice deck with beautiful mountain views for enjoying their ice cream treats and grill items.

Lawson The Lawson Adventure Park, 3440 Alvarado Road, hosts the Grand Opening of its new bar and large, second-story deck overlooking its property, July 5.

Idaho Springs The much larger town of Idaho Springs has more food and drink establishments and, therefore, more opportunities to eat outside. The outdoor dining options are unique due to the constraints of historic buildings and limited building space, but some great options exist.

One of the most popular restaurants in town is well-known for its smoked meats. Smoking Yards BBQ, 2736 Colorado Blvd., not has some of the best barbecue items in the region, the have one of the largest, most relaxing decks, too. It overlooks Clear Creek, where river rafters can be seen floating past.

For the perfect relaxing oasis downtown, visit the Vintage Moose Tavern, 123 16th Ave., for ice cold beer, cocktails, pit-smoked BBQ sandwiches and a great outdoor patio seating area overlooking Citizen’s Park and historic buildings.

Other nice outdoor dining areas in town include Big B’s Soup & Grilled Cheese, 2448 Colorado Blvd.; Clear Creek Cidery Tavern & Taps, 1446 Miner St.; Hilldaddy’s Wildfire Restaurant, 2910 Colorado Blvd.; and MTN Prime, 1600 Miner St. El Rancho Further east at the El Rancho I-70 exit, the El Rancho Brewing Company, 29260 U.S. 40, proudly offers views of one of the most-photographed panoramic scenes in Colorado from its large deck along with hand-crafted brews and barbecue. The building is one of the most historic in the area, while the patio overlooking the Continental Divide is dog-friendly and open year-round, weather permitting.

Evergreen There are numerous outstanding options for dining outside in Evergreen.

Many establishments offer some type of outdoor seating in the summer, and most succeed. While there are too many to detail, there are several worth noting.

It doesn’t get much better than the deck at Cactus Jacks Saloon & Grill, 4651 Hwy. 73. It is spacious and adjacent to a creek with a great atmosphere and views. It’s the perfect place to enjoy their Widespread Burgers and a drink from the full bar. All summer, live music is hosted on the deck regularly.

Lariat Lodge Brewing, 27618 Fireweed Dr., overlooks Bear Creek. It features classic brewed beers, upscale comfort food, tons of outdoor seating options, and a friendly neighborhood vibe.

There is comfortable patio seating on Bear Creek at Creekside Cellars, 28036 Hwy. 73, which offers wine and a large upscale menu.
