TAKE NOTE
M
arch is Women’s History Month, a time to commemorate and encourage the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. It honors and celebrates the struggles and achievements of American women throughout the history of the United States. American women have struggled throughout our history to gain rights not simply for themselves, but for many other under-represented and disenfranchised groups in America. Women’s History Month has its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed legislation designating the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the country and recognize specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. In 2012, Obama proclaimed, “during Women’s History Month, we recall that the pioneering legacy of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers is revealed not only in our museums and history books, but also in the fierce determination and limitless potential of our daughters and granddaughters. As we make headway on the crucial issues of our time, let the courageous vision championed by women of past generations inspire us to defend the dreams and opportunities of those to come.” To learn about women’s role in the history of Colorado, visit the Center for Colorado Women’s History at Byers-Evans House, 1310 Bannock St. in Denver. It focuses on scholarship, research, lectures, tours and exhibits that expand the understanding and collective memory of the history of women in Colorado. Most importantly, the Center is connecting local stories to the broader stories of women’s history worldwide. Visit historycolorado.org and womenshistorymonth.gov to read more about women’s role in the history of Colorado and the United States.

Mountain rescue team presents safety classes
ALPINE RESCUE TEAM’S
SKILLS FOR THE HILLS
A
BACKCOUNTRY SAFETY SERIES Alpine Rescue Team HQ 28802 Rainbow Hill Road, El Rancho
lpine Rescue Team—a group of highly-trained, non-paid, professional rescuemountaineers based in El Rancho—is the only nationally-accredited mountain rescue team in Colorado that is the designated SAR team for three county sheriffs: Jefferson, Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties. The group, which has performed free mountain search and rescue day and night to wilderness emergencies since 1959, offers the public an opportunity to learn from its members throughout its Skills for the Hills Backcountry Safety Series, which includes a variety of free and open-to-the-public classes March-May. The classes—with topics including navigation, GPS, maps and compasses, altitude sickness, hypothermia, avalanches, backcountry travel, climbing safety and more—are held at the Alpine Rescue Team’s Headquarters, 28802 Rainbow Hill Road in El Rancho. New this year is the “Ask a Rescuer – Almost Anything!” event, March 23, 7-9 p.m. They may not have all the answers, but promise to do their best to give “professional” input from many years of performing searches and rescues and backcountry travel. Seating for each event is limited, so advance registration through the group’s website is requested. Donations are accepted at the door to help support the team’s mission. Parking is available in the RTD Park n’Ride lot across the street and in a dirt lot below the building. The Alpine Rescue Team is also currently involved with raising funds for the “Colorado Mountain Rescue History Center.” To learn more about this project or to make a tax deductible donation, visit their website. Find complete class descriptions, additional information and links for advance registration at alpinerescueteam.org. Call 303-526-2417 for non-emergency information.

IDAHO SPRINGS
T
he Clear Creek Cidery Tavern & Taps—a new place to eat and drink in Idaho Springs— opened its doors at the end of February after a nearly six-month delay spawned by the need for extensive remodeling and code compliance work. The new restaurant, located at 1446 Miner St. in what was most recently Da Rivuh Fish and BBQ Company, offers an innovative concept and flavors not currently found in Idaho Springs along with a friendly staff and management and ownership team with decades of hospitality experience. “We’ve touched every single inch of this building, from the foundation to the ceiling,” Owner Evan Lombardi said. “To get the building up to code was absolutely a task unto itself.” Lombardi worked at Mount Vernon Canyon Club for 11 years and his business partner Greg Dalrymple, who owns the Canteen Tap House & Tavern in Breckenridge has been in the service industry for 35 years. “We just want to give people great-valued food and really good quality service,” Lombardi said. “We’re just hoping to make a good impression. We have American comfort food, so burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups and we feature chimichangas… We are not Tex-Mex, we are western fusion.” The cidery, open daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., offers a full menu, nine ciders and nine beers, four of which are nitro, on tap. There is also a full bar and comprehensive wine list. It will start producing and serving its own apple cider in the next seven to 12 months. An unforeseen need to install a fire suppression system delayed that plan. According to Head Chef Sean Conner—who grew up in Georgetown and spent time in Arizona—the menu highlights southwest infused flavors “that people aren’t used to” using a lot of spices “that can be crazy and tastes delicious.” Find Clear Creek Cidery Tavern & Taps on Facebook or call 303-567-2158 for more information.

COVER STORY
Go Farther, Faster Snowmobiles provide easy, exciting way to access winter backcountry
E
CLEAR CREEK COUNTY very winter, Colorado’s mountain backcountry opens up to snowmobilers offering the simultaneously thrilling and relaxing feeling of coasting over miles of fresh snow in the forest experienced riders know and love. Everything from family-friendly jaunts to high-speed adventures for all abilities are available throughout Colorado, where going “sledding” makes a great day off the slopes or an excursion all its own. Here in Clear Creek County, locals and visitors have access to exciting terrain—both in the county and in nearby Grand and Summit counties—beautiful vistas of the Continental Divide and other high peaks as well as an abundance of outstanding snow. One way to experience the sweeping bowls of powder and untouched mountain meadows in the winter months is by snowmobile, which doesn’t require years of practice or training. If you want to reach miles beyond other adventurers, a snowmobile might be the best option. Unlike snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and many other methods of reaching the backcountry, snowmobiling allows most anyone an opportunity to access truly remote areas. Don’t be fooled, even though you’re often sitting when riding a snowmobile, it is great exercise. Snowmobiling builds a strong core, requiring strength and flexibility to maneuver on the trails. The average person can burn about 238 calories per hour. While snowmobiling can be exhilarating and provide easy access to the backcountry, all riders regardless of ability need to know and follow basic guidelines for safety. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, to be prepared take an avalanche safety course and always carry shovels, probes and avalanche beacons and know how to use them; monitor snow conditions especially after large snow falls, big changes in temperature and big wind events; be especially careful on steep slopes, above timberline, and when maneuvering through drainages.

Local snowmobilers are also cautioned not to harass moose, which are often seen on snowmobile trails. Moose are not frighted by vehicles. They will stand their ground and possibly charge. Perhaps most importantly, to ensure a safe and enjoyable excursion, snowmobilers should be familiar with the snowmobile safety code and code of ethics. “Snowmobiling isn’t a one-man sport,” Dalyn Highfield of local snowmobile rental business Selfsponsered Snow & Dirt said. “You go mountain biking or dirt biking by yourself and usually get back all right. Snowmobiling, if you get stuck bad enough, you’re staying the night in the woods. I would dot your I’s and cross your T’s on making sure you are prepared to go into the back country.” Snowmobiles operated on public land or trails in Colorado must be registered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Visit cpw.state.co.us to learn more and register online. Registration fees fund more than 2,700 miles of groomed and marked winter trails. Funds also support the Snowmobile Safety Certification Program, program operators, avalanche warning system and patrol services to ensure safety and registration compliance. Clear Creek County offers unique snowmobiling terrain for the more advanced rider. The Jones Pass Road Trail, which is accessed from the Henderson Mine exit on U.S. 40 north of Empire. The route goes to the crest of the Continental Divide and above tree line. Other option include Fall River Reservoir about six miles up Fall River Road and Stevens Gulch, which is located at Interstate 70 Exit 221 at Bakerville. A map of available routes is available from the Idaho Springs U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station, 2060 Miner St. According to Highfield, Clear Creek County’s terrain can be rough and dangerous. “It’s not very forgiving for all riders, but it’s great for the backcountry enthusiast who wants a little more of a challenge,” he said. Local snowmobiler and Tommyknocker Brewery Director
of Brewing Operations Steve Indrehus agrees. “It’s extreme snowmobiling. There’s nothing easy in Clear Creek County. There’s no beginner snowmobiling. It’s all advanced,” he said. Grand County includes some of the most “dazzling” snowmobiling terrain in the country and offers more than 1,000 miles of snowmobiling trails. Winter Park and Fraser have many trail options and outfitters, while Grand Lake is known as the “Snowmobiling Capital of Colorado.” Its streets become snowy rights of way for snowmobilers as long as there’s snow on the ground. Continental Divide views abound on 300 miles of trails near town in the Arapaho National Forest along the western border of Rocky Mountain National Park. Colorado Adventure Park near Winter Park Resort has Snow Scoots, or mini snowmobiles, for young speed seekers. Kids six to 13 years old can practice for pro terrain on a groomed track. Snowmobile outfitters, guides and rental businesses are plentiful in Summit County as are hundreds of miles of trails. Possible perks to Breckenridge snowmobiling include unparalleled views from the Continental Divide and well-groomed trails in the White River National Forest. One popular groomed area to ride is Georgia Pass Road, which is closed to all vehicular traffic except snowmobiles from late November to late May. The summit offers panoramas of Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain ski areas. The Vail Pass Winter Recreation Area is a massively popular snowmobiling and backcountry ski area at I-70 Exit 190 offering world-renowned terrain and groomed trails. Skiers and snowmobilers have a system for sharing the trails to give everyone lots of room for fun in some of Colorado’s most spectacular terrain. If new to snowmobiling, go with an outfitter the first time out. Their knowledge of equipment and operations is only surpassed by their in-depth study of local terrain and familiarity with changing conditions. Outfitters provide snowmobiles as well as safety equipment like helmets and beacons. Not only will you be in great hands, but you’ll enjoy yourself more. SNOWMOBILER’S CODE OF ETHICS A snowmobiler will… 1. Be a good sports enthusiast and recognize that people judge all snowmobilers by your actions. A snowmobiler will use their influence with other riders and owners to promote fair conduct. 2. Not litter trails or trailheads. Nor will they pollute streams or lakes by their actions. 3. Not damage living trees, shrubs, or other natural features. They will go only where there is sufficient snow cover so as to not damage the land. 4. Will respect public and private landowners‘ property and rights. 5. Will lend a helping hand when they see someone in distress. 6. Will make themselves and their vehicle available to assist search and rescue efforts. 7. Will not interfere with or harass other trail users, other snowmobilers or other winter sports enthusiasts. They will respect the rights of other trail users to enjoy the winter recreational opportunities. 8. Will know and obey all federal, state, provincial, and local rules regulating the use of snowmobiles. 9. Will not harass wildlife and will avoid areas posted for the protection or feeding of wildlife. 10. Will stay on marked trails when operating in areas where snowmobile use is restricted to trails. Will obey all traffic laws when operating upon plowed roadways designated as open to snowmobiling. LOCAL BUSINESS
Selfsponsored Snow & Dirt offers a wide range of apparel, parts, rentals and more.
Helping people play in snow, dirt
By Jeffrey V. Smith DUMONT couple of years ago, Dalyn Highfield and Mike Becker were drinking beer and commiserating about their jobs; a somewhat standard practice amongst friends. This time, however, the “burned-out” feeling they shared revealed a mutual dream to turn dirt bike and snowmobile hobbies into “work.” Selfsponsored Snow & Dirt, a small rental, parts and apparel shop in Dumont which opened December 2017, is the manifestation of that vision. “My background is construction, but I’ve always been into the recreational stuff like dirt bikes and snowmobiles as my hobby,” Highfield said. “My dream would be to have that as work… so, this is kind of the retirement plan.” Highfield, a 1996 Clear Creek High School graduate, and Becker, who lives in El Rancho, began implementing their business plan after discovering an available building off Interstate 70 Exit 235 at Dumont. “It was a little rough when we first found it. It was a woodworking shop,” Highfield explained. “There was nothing in here, just an empty shell.” Once the shop was built out, the two used personal equipment to get things going, then bought new equipment. “From there, we are just continuing to grow,” the co-owner said. The business now offers an “impressive” rental fleet of Polaris Sportsman ATVs, KTM 6 Days dirt bikes for the summer, as well as SKI-DOO and Polaris mountain sleds for the winter. “The rentals are basically the stuff we want to ride if our personal equipment was broken. This is what we’d want to see in the rental market.” Highfield said. “It’s more dedicated to the backcountry enthusiast that’s into the sport. If we had friends coming over and they knew what they were doing, this is what we’d want

to put them on.” All sled rentals include helmet and avalanche beacon and a back pack with a shovel and probe is available to rent for $25. Currently, the business serves tourists, heading to the mountains, and locals, who don’t want to drive down the hill, about evenly. Customers from in the county continue to grow as more residents discover the business. “Locals will drive by three or four times before they finally stop in. Once we have them in here, they become repeat customers.” Highfield said. The business is more than just a rental shop and usually has the parts that can “save the day” for personal machines. Apparel from TOBE Outerwear, Smith Optics, Spy Optics and more quality brands along with parts, oil, aftermarket upgrades and more of “what you need to stay on the mountain or track,” also fill the store. “These are the guys, and it’s great to have a local shop,” Tommyknocker Brewery Director of Brewing Operations Steve Indrehus said. “People say, ‘oh my gosh, it costs $245 [a day] to rent a snowmobile?’ I tell people, that’s a deal. Try to own one. If you can ride that thing for two or three hours and bring it back and you’re not beat up, you didn’t do it right.” Because Clear Creek County’s more advanced terrain isn’t for everyone, Selfsponsored’s machines can go anywhere within the state. Vail Pass, Rabbit Ears Pass and Corona Pass are popular alternatives. In the summer, there are “endless” trails in the county for dirt bikes. In a short time, through word-of-mouth and limited promotion, the business has become the “best stop on your way up” for both locals and metro-area residents heading to the mountains. Local riders are encouraged to explore the website or stop by the store to learn more about the business and what they do and save a trip down the mountain.
