TAKE NOTE
T
aking place on the first Saturday in June, National Trails Day is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. Thousands of hikers, bikers, rowers, horseback riders, trail clubs, federal and local agencies, land trusts, and businesses come together in partnership to advocate for, maintain and clean up public lands and trails. The American Hiking Society asks everyone to take a pledge to give back to trails and public lands on National Trails Day—June 1. “We saw how our public lands suffered during the government shutdown. Together, we’ll give back to the places we love and set the world record for the most people improving trails in a single day. Be a part of history by pledging to clean up a trail or volunteering at a trail service project on National Trails Day,” it says. By pledging to improve a trail you’ll join a nation-wide movement to set a world record and (more importantly) sustain America’s remarkable trails system. With your help, we can preserve beloved trails for future generations. Plus, everyone who commits to improving trails will be entered to win weekly giveaways of outdoor gear. You can participate in National Trails Day locally by helping Wildlands Restoration Volunteers with its Beaver Brook Trail Maintenance/Stewardship Project, 27661 Genesee Dr., on June 1, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The historic and very popular Beaver Brook Trail begins just north of Genesee and winds northeast to Lookout Mountain, near Golden. Volunteers will be addressing erosion problems on the trail by adding water bars and steps. Volunteers will be closing braided trails and helping to define the trail tread to reduce future erosion. Maintenance of the trail tread will help ensure proper drainage and function of this popular trail. Visit wlrv.org to learn more. While its location is conveniently located near the Denver-metro area, the trail offers hikers a remote backcountry feel. In fact, this year’s project site requires a three mile hike in. An RSVP is required by e-mailing nate@wlrv.org. Visit americanhiking.org/national-trails-day to learn more.

DID YOU KNOW? The Clear Creek County Trails Strike Force kicks off its 2019 season May 6. Tasked with planning, designing, building and maintaining more than 100 miles of trails within the county, the team uses everything from a UTV, chainsaws, a jack-hammer and brute strength to get the job done. This season, there’s a new member of the team, Sadie the Trail Dog. Trails Supervisor James Kovaly adopted Sadie—a two-year-old Foxhound— a year ago from Charlie’s Place Animal Shelter, giving her a good home, and a job. “Sadie is a big piece of that team—always ‘stepping’ in to help and supervise what’s going on,” he said. According to Kovaly, his team of one full-time and three seasonal employees deals with miles of trails that had been untouched for years, installing trailhead amenities and gates, removing rocks and fallen trees, repairing bridges, fixing drainage problems and building some new trails. Many of the trails are now usable and in good shape for hikers, bikers and other trail users. This year the team has its hands full maintaining dozens of trails, including 10 trails in collaboration with the Forest Service. They are also building four miles of new trail as part of the Floyd Hill Open Space Trail System in partnership with paid contractors, volunteers and youth organizations. They are also looking for volunteers to help the crew build trail—no experience necessary. “Volunteers and community involvement are key,” he said. For more information, contact Kovaly at 303-679-2308 or trails@co.clear-creek.co.us or visit co.clear-creek.co.us. “Sadie” the Trail Dog 6

LIVING LOCAL HISTORY
A MINER’S ‘SUPPORT ANIMAL’ Many of Colorado’s 19th-century miners used burros—Spanish for donkeys—to carry mining tools and supplies as they prospected throughout the region. The Pack Burro Races in Georgetown, May 25, and Idaho Springs, May 26, pay tribute these early Colorado settlers and the hearty animals that made working here possible.

he Great Mountain Honky Tonk, an afternoon of food, booze, and Colorado’s finest honky tonk music, May 26, 4-9 p.m., at the Bread Bar, 1010 Main St., features Casey James Prestwood & the Burning Angels, Larry Nix and Erika Ryann. Well-behaved dogs and children accompanied by an adult are welcome. Tickets are $15. There’s a movement bringing classic country music into the 21st century, with a renewed authenticity not typically found on the radio, and its standard-bearer is Casey James Prestwood. With roots in the South, and refined in the Rockies, Prestwood has crafted a “lively and infectious sound that is solely his own.” The founding member of rock band Hot Rod Circuit, Prestwood also had tenures with Colorado’s Drag The River and other national acts. Nix was born in Tupelo, Mississippi where he absorbed the
sounds of the South. After being raised on classic soul and country in Alabama, he relocated to join the music and arts scene in Denver. Quickly gaining notoriety, Nix has continued to “wow and woo music lovers all over.” Larry has assisted in scoring local and national documentaries, as well as gaining nominations for “Best Country Artist” by local publications. Ryann pulls her sound from “dimly lit honky tonks, small western towns, and years lived in the tangled woods of the Colorado foothills.” She writes what she knows. From songs about grit and perseverance to raw portrayals of love, she’s known for cutting to the heart with her honest lyrics and warm vocal inflection. The “fine mountainside drinking establishment” is located in an 1800s-era bakery. It is open Fridays at 4 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m., and Sundays at noon. By Jennifer Pund IDAHO SPRINGS TN Prime restaurant opened on Miner Street in downtown Idaho Springs in May 2016 as a “modern steakhouse in a historic town” with an objective to offer something different. By using natural Colorado meats and fresh, local-as-possible ingredients, owners Chuck Holcomb and Chris Verikas along with Chef Shelly Benson, are still succeeding at this goal three years later. The restaurant’s success is not a surprise as Holcomb and Verikas had already been running their Mexican restaurant, Lucha, in Georgetown and Littleton, for years. They knew the market, and what they were doing from the start. MTN Prime sets itself apart with a warm atmosphere, attentive and personable staff and menu meant to be “savored.” It features several cuts of steak, a wide-range of seafood and other entrees including pasta, pork ribs and chicken dishes. The menu also includes salads, burgers, sandwiches, Elk Stew and Clam Chowder along with appetizers ranging from Lump Maryland Blue Crab Cakes to Fried Risotto Balls stuffed with cheese to Chicken Wings. Everything is made from scratch from their own recipes. Even the spices and seasonings are fresh from The Spice and Tea Exchange down the street. “It makes a big difference,” General Manager T.J. Burkey said. Calling itself “casual fine dining,” the restaurant caters to those wanting a more upscale dining experience after hiking and exploring the county. “We understand people’s lifestyle up here. We want to maintain the Colorado vibe and

authentic feel of the area. We try not to be something we’re not.” Burkey said. “I laugh because I get calls asking if we have a dress code, clearly from people who aren’t from around here.” While the ambiance is pleasant and relaxing, it’s the quality of the drinks and Benson’s food that keeps patrons coming back. “It starts with our kitchen. We do as much as we can in house,” Burkey explained. “[Benson] makes all the sauces and dressings from scratch. We are not 100 percent craft, but we are pretty close. Our culinary team knows the devil is in the details.” Another way MTN Prime sets itself apart is by offering brunch on most weekends and holidays, including Mother’s Day, May 12. “We provide unique breakfast items not often found… bagels and lox, chicken in a biscuit, avocado toast, and fried French toast, just to name a few,” Burkey said. “Throw in bottomless mimosas and re-imagined Bloody Mary Bar, and you’re sure to have an experience unlike anywhere else in the county.” According to Burkey, brunch allows MTN Prime to feature a side of the restaurant people may not always see. “We try to keep it light and casual all the time, but brunch is a time we really encourage people to sit back, relax and enjoy the weekend the way people should; with eggs and mimosas,” he said. On Mother’s Day, Prime Rib is featured with seafood and an egg station along with fresh fruit, sweets and breads. “This is a departure from our normal buffets and will be tailored specifically for all the moms out there,” Burkey said. Be sure to stop in all summer to enjoy MTN Prime’s newly enhanced patio seating.

Anyone can do it, and it doesn’t matter your age.” Burro racing involves many skills apart from racing. Most of all, according to Perez, racers must “check” their ego. “Even ultra-runners who are top in the world come in last place because they can’t work with the donkey,’ she said. “There are some ultra-runners that do well, but I think it’s how you go into it. When you go in with an ego and think you are going to kill it, your donkey is not going to think that way. You need to have a bond with your donkey, like with any animal. They are such smart animals and they all have different personalities. Briggs may be awesome with me, but if I hand him off to someone else he may not be so great.” Burro racing can also be fun to watch, especially when other activities are included. “People love burros. They are kind of the outcast and everybody likes the outcast. Everybody has a soft spot for the outcast or the underdog,” Lee said. “They are kind of that way. But they are a really hardy animal and they do miraculous things; they carry more for their size and weight than horses or mules. They will do just about anything for you once you gain their trust. So, people are attracted to watch the race and learn a little bit about the history even though they can’t see much of the race.” According to Lee, it’s always been his intention to help the towns, by promoting them and giving away gift certificates to local businesses. “It helps give a little extra business to the town and expose the town,” he said.” Bringing in tourist

It’s become a buildup weekend event that the runners and other people might stick around for the whole weekend to see both of the races.” Another way to get more people involved is through the Pack Burro Racing 101 class presented by Laughing Valley Ranch and Clear Creek Recreation. The “introduction to Colorado’s summer heritage sport” includes the basics of pack burro racing and will prepare participants for the Georgetown and Idaho Springs races. Classes on May 16 and May 18— which cost $200 for district residents and $250 for anyone outside the district—cover the history of the sport, the proper care of a burro, how to properly pack a burro and how to run with a burro. COVER STORY
Big Water Local rafting outfitters expect outstanding season on Clear Creek
By Jeffrey V. Smith CLEAR CREEK COUNTY olorado is one of the most popular places in the country to experience a whitewater rafting adventure, and Clear Creek is one of the most exciting, most accessible commercially rafted rivers in the state. This year will be especially remarkable, according to local river guides, thanks to a state-wide record-setting snowpack that has only begun to melt. All of it adds up to the potential for a better-than-usual season, and subsequent boost for the local economy. Located in a historic, mining valley along Interstate 70, Clear Creek is a steep, narrow, technical river that is both challenging and fun. Once on the water, the interstate goes unnoticed as paddlers drop through Clear Creek County’s scenery and history. Numerous companies provide professionally guided trips on the river and excursions offer Class I-V rapids from mid-May through July and sometimes into early-August during a normal season. There is hope the river will be able to be rafted even longer this year. “It’s going to be a great season for water flow, especially compared to last year. We had to shut it down about a month early last year,” Colorado Adventure Center Director of Operations Justin Ibarra said. “With the snowpack, we are anticipating a nice, long high-water season.” That buoyant outlook is also shared by other rafting operations. “I think it’s going to be an awesome season. A really good snowpack,” Liquid Descent Owner and Guide Alan Blado said. “We never quite know what could happen with the snowpack. It could get really, really hot and we can have high water for a little bit. But really, I think most outfitters will be able to run Clear Creek into late August. I think people are excited to go rafting. A lot of locals that didn’t go last year are probably going to come this year. The economy is also really good, so people are traveling. I’m super stoked. I can’t wait.” Clear Creek is the steepest commercially rafted river in Colorado, meaning more rapids per mile and an overall more exciting ride. There is almost continuous whitewater along its entire run from the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels to Golden, requiring more paddling and increasing the likelihood of participants getting wet—which is usually the goal.

The river, and its outfitters, also feature mellow areas suitable for beginners and those looking for something a little less adrenalin-pumping. “Clear Creek is one of the best rivers in the state for whitewater rafting,” Ibarra, who has been working on the river since 2005, said. “A lot of people think, ‘oh, it’s the drainage ditch on the side of I-70.’ Yes, it’s next to I-70, but it has some of the best whitewater in Colorado and it’s world-renowned.” According to Blado, who has worked on the river since 2008, what makes Clear Creek “cool” is its uninterrupted whitewater and limited flat-water areas. “There are other rivers in the state where you run a great rapid and then you have to paddle two miles of flat water to get to the next one,” he explained. “Clear Creek has a lot of gradient, so the whitewater is pretty continuous. There are lots of rapids that are close together. Even the beginner trip, for a class two trip, it’s really splashy and fun and not a lot of flat water.” According to Ibarra, at higher water, Clear Creek has “one of the best beginner section in the state, hands down.” The best part of whitewater rafting is almost anyone can do it. While accidents do happen, the sport is considered safe and fun for people of nearly all ages and abilities. It is important to know a river trip’s intensity changes by time of year. A trip later in the season could be a leisurely ride through mild waters or, if in May or June, a thrilling adventure through the rapids. Once the decision is made on when to go, choosing a qualified, licensed outfitter offering trips that suit the

appropriate skill level is the next step. State-certified companies have all the expertise needed to lead their guest safely down the river and are accustomed to guiding trips for seasoned rafters and those who have never been on the water before. Most outfitters offer a variety of trips—from more familyfriendly options that make wonderful experiences for children and first-timers to more extreme adventures for the seasoned veteran—which can be selected based on your experience level, fitness and desires for the trip. “The single most important influence on someone’s rafting experience is going to be the guide,” Blado said. “So, even if you have great facilities and great equipment and awesome busses, if you have a guide that is incompetent or not a good river runner, or also just kind of salty and not excited to be there… that is really what is going to the biggest influence on your trip.” Thankfully, there are many friendly, knowledgeable, well-equipped, licensed outfitters running Clear Creek. Rafting in Clear Creek County, still considered a “hidden gem,” has grown significantly over the past decade. This season, thanks to the outstanding snowpack, outfitters are already seeing increased reservations and are booking trips earlier than usual. Businesses that run Clear Creek river trips are hopeful this will be the year they get 100,000 visitors on the river.
“It’s optimistic, but I think pretty darn realistic given the circumstances and good water, good economy, affordable gas,” Colorado Adventure Center Assistant General Manager Matt Espy said. “I met with a bunch of the companies [in April], and I think everyone is staffing up to have the biggest year they’ve ever had, and I think that trickles down to everyone. We work very closely with everyone in town… to bring 100,000 people into the community in three months.” In Clear Creek County, rafting is an easy activity to build an entire vacation around or add to a larger itinerary. Many outfitters offer packages combining rafting with other activities including historic train rides, zip-lines, mine tours, ATV adventures, horseback riding, rock climbing, fishing, hiking and mountain biking. “Rafting is a huge attraction. I really think it’s one of the best things you can do,” Blado said. “It mixes exercise, beauty and adventure… so a lot of people come here to do that, but when they come to the county, they are also looking for other things to do here. They want to go a gold mine tour, or they want to do a zip-line, or they want to go to a restaurant before they go home. So, it brings a lot of people to the community that also partake in some of the other awesome things that Clear Creek County has to offer.” No matter your level of experience, this is a great season to experience what rafting on Clear Creek is all about.
