TAKE NOTE

n March 2006, the third Thursday in October was proclaimed to be Conflict Resolution Day for annual international celebration. In Colorado, however, we celebrate conflict resolution throughout the entire month of October rather than just one day. The Clear Creek County commissioners in 2012 declared a proclamation recognizing Conflict Resolution Month in Colorado in perpetuity. The month-long event is to promote awareness of mediation, arbitration, conciliation and other creative, peaceful means of resolving conflict; promote the use of conflict resolution in schools, families, businesses, communities, governments and the legal system; recognize the significant contributions of peaceful conflict resolvers; and obtain national synergy by having celebrations happen across the country and around the world on the same day. According to the Conflict Resolution Month website, there are many ways to resolve conflicts, including surrendering, running away, overpowering your opponent with violence, filing a lawsuit and others. The movement toward Alternative Dispute Resolution, sometimes referred to simply as conflict resolution, grew out of the belief that there are better options than using violence or going to court. The Conflict Center—which offers numerous conflict resolution resources at Conflictcenter.org—offers the following ten conflict resolution tips: • Respect everyone’s ideas and needs • Turn problems into possibilities • Listen so people will talk and talk so people will listen • Focus on the problem, not the person • Build “power with” not “power over” others • Express feeling without blaming others • Own your part of the conflict • Strategize to reach mutually agreeable solutions • Create options… one way always creates losers • Solve the problem and build the relationship Learn more at conflictresolutionmonth.org. Saving History Gala supports historical society’s mission

C

elebrate the 55th Anniversary of the Historical Society of Idaho Springs with a “mysterious evening” at its 25th Annual Gala fundraiser, Oct. 19, 5-11 p.m, at Blackstone Rivers Ranch, 3673 Chicago Creek Road. Masquerade is this year’s event theme. Tickets are $80 each and include dinner, live auction, entertainment and more. Each year, the Historical Society of Idaho Springs dedicates Special Appeal funds from the annual event to a cause. This year, money raised will be used to improve the gift shop area of the Heritage Museum and Idaho Springs Visitor Center, 2060 Miner St., which the organization owns and operates. According to Executive Director Genevieve Palmer, the museum and visitor center is often the first stop, and first impression, for visitors to Idaho Springs. “Having undergone a number of upgrades and exhibit changes, the response to our museum experience has been overwhelmingly positive and we want to continue that momentum in the shop,” she said. Renovation plans include cleaning, updating and modernizing using this year’s Special Appeal funds. Palmer wants to create a “fun and exciting” display in the shop itself as well as obtain a kiosk where visitors can browse and print historic photos from the historical society’s collection. She also wants to create new merchandise to showcase the images and concepts of the Historical Society and do general things like paint and re-do the floors. “We hope to change this area to create an exciting and

interactive experience that inspires interest in the history of Idaho Springs and Clear Creek County by all visitors. We are confident that such an experience will enable us to create repeat visitors, increase donations and sales and grow interest in our great heritage as the town where gold was first discovered in Colorado,” Palmer said. “Such a renovation will allow us to direct visitors attention to our rich history as soon as they walk through the door, make them excited to be in Idaho Springs and, subsequently enhance the monetary and conceptual scope of the Historical Society of Idaho Springs.” Palmer hopes the community will help them achieve their goal by purchasing Gala tickets and membership—discounts are available if both are purchased at once. “We look forward to seeing you at this long-established county event,” she said. he Mill Creek Valley Historical Society presents its annual melodrama, featuring Dumont and other Clear Creek County residents, at the Dumont Schoolhouse, 50 W. Dumont Road, Oct. 12-13, 18, 20 and 26-27. Both evening and matinée performances are scheduled. The group, which formed in the early 1980s to save the Dumont School House, has been telling tales of good versus evil to raise money for its preservation work since 1999. It’s the organization’s biggest fundraiser, and everyone is invited to join in the fun. A sing-along begins each presentation, and a “boisterous” auctioning of bakery items follows. “For those who have never been to a melodrama, they find they are as important as the cast, and are pulled in and urged to heckle, boo, hiss, and hurrah those on the stage. Sometimes the actors pull people into the plot. It is not professional acting, so there is plenty to tease about,” Society President and Melodrama Director Larrice Sell said. In this year’s production, The Mark Of Zero, audiences find

out if an evil banker will cheat the Deleon family out of their ranch and all of its water or if Don Trey Delego from a neighboring ranch will save the day by getting in touch with El Zero. This year’s cast includes Viola Locknikar as Consuela Rodrigas, Garcia Smith as the Deleon’s uncivil maid, Amy Romine as the spoiled wife Señora Victoria Margerita Deleon, Sue Grimm as the daughter Señorita Alexandria Deleon, Bo Thompson as nice guy Don Trey DeLego, Bruce Bell as bad guy Señor Nathanial Nasty, Corey Baker as Señor Don Carlos Deleon, Ann Hector as Nora Prim and a “mysterious stranger” as El Zero. Stephanie Lamb, Christine Schleicher/Miller and David Miller are understudies. Learn how the entire story unfolds at 7 p.m. on Oct. 12, 18 and 26 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 13, 20 and 27. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and members and $8 for children under 10 years old. Little Library, BIG IMPACT The Hubner Little Free Library in Empire

Book lending phenomenon proves popular in mountain communities By Jeffrey V. Smith CLEAR CREEK COUNTY ittle Free Libraries—small, front‐yard “take a book, return a book” exchanges credited with building community, sparking creativity and inspiring readers— are a global phenomenon. Evidence of the world’s largest book-sharing movement can be found all over Clear Creek County as well as in nearby Central City and Evergreen. Unique neighborhood book exchanges and all shapes and sizes, built and registered by both private citizens and the Clear Creek County Library District, are scattered throughout the county and several businesses have dedicated their bookshelves to the idea. Ten years ago, a Hudson, Wisconsin man created the first Little Free Library book exchange and placed it in his front yard in tribute to his mother, who had been a teacher. Ten years later, his idea has snowballed into a worldwide movement. There are now more than 90,000 Little Free Libraries in all 50 states and 91 countries. With the help of Little Free Libraries, more than 120 million books have been shared and thousands of neighbors have connected. The Clear Creek County Library District has several Little Free Libraries with a goal to provide more books in more places, however they can, and to promote literacy and the love of reading—even to those living in the most remote parts of the region. Patrons can take a book or share a book at any Little Free Library location. “Our mission is to empower our community through literacy, human connection, and equal access to resources, and the Little Free Library movement is very much in alignment with that,” CCCLD HR Director and Administrator Cameron Marlin said. “In addition, we feel as though the simple act of sharing books is a gesture that can strengthen communities. Little Free Libraries allow us to broaden our reach and to connect with readers who may not ever enter our libraries. We are lovers of books and the moments of respite that reading affords, and the Little Free Libraries can offer more of that.”

L A Little Free Library near the DeDisse Trail on Evergreen Lake was built to honor the owner’s parents and their dedication to the local school system.

This unique Little Free Library at the Clear Creek Recreation Center is popular with patrons.

According to CCCLD Development Director Lucy Thoms, “libraries are constantly evolving, and the old model where libraries only check out books in the library has gone by the wayside. Our goal is to provide access to resources by whatever means possible, and Little Free Libraries help us get books in the hands of more people. They’re also a great conversation starter. Someone might see library staff restocking a Little Free Library and that person then learns about other library services, or maybe two people are perusing the books and they strike up a conversation about their favorite books.” The Little Free Libraries, which house dozens of books from a range of genres and reading levels, have proven to be quite popular across the county. “Patrons love our Little Free Libraries, so much so, we’ve received multiple requests for more,” Marlin said. “We can hardly keep up with stocking the Little Free Library at the Clear Creek Metro Rec. Center and many library patrons have offered to help replenish books in the Little Free Library up at [Loveland’s] Ptarmigan Roost Café.” Businesses with a Little Free Library in their store have found it to be mutually beneficial. “They’re a fun perk for customers, and we reach more people, whether they’re locals or visitors,” Thoms said. Expect to find more Little Free Libraries sponsored by the library district including one at Alice School House in Saint Mary’s Glacier and four others across the county. “Our goal is to eventually reach all corners of the county—Silver Plume, Empire, and many of the more remote areas,” Thoms explained. “We know traveling to Idaho Springs or Georgetown isn’t always feasible, so we hope that Little Free Libraries can help fill in those gaps and make the library a little more accessible.” According to Marlin, the district hopes to have a Little Free Library presence in eastern part of the county to serve the Upper Bear Creek Road neighborhood as well as the Floyd Hill neighborhoods. “We believe we currently claim the status of having the highest elevated Little Free Library in the world, but we aspire to go even higher,” she said. “Don’t be surprised 19

if you find a Little Free Library at an elevation above 13,000 feet.” For locations of officially registered Free Little Libraries, visit the organization’s website, but also keep an eye out for additional little neighborhood libraries that have not been made “official.” They all serve the same purpose of promoting reading and sharing among neighbors. Empire resident Peggy Hubner maintains a Free Little Library at 207 E. Mountain Ave. “I have always loved the written word beginning with bookmobile visits and eagerly awaiting my Weekly Reader,” she says on her library registration. “We purchased a small diner in the mountains in Colorado and the very first item added was a free lending library. Very soon, I had stacks of donated books; enough to satiate our small town… Now the tradition continues with our very own LFL. Our town’s book club soon became a part with everyone contributing a favorite book.” For more information on the Little Free Library movement, including how to build your own, visit littlefreelibrary. org. COVER STORY

Pumpkin Passion Mountain pumpkin patches, events provide convenience, seasonal fun

I

t’s hard to imagine the fall holidays of Halloween and Thanksgiving without pumpkins. The nutritious and versatile plant has flowers, seeds and flesh that are edible and rich in vitamins, and they are used to make soups, desserts, breads, snacks and more. Native to North America, the fruit is one of the oldest domesticated plants, having been used as early as 7,500 to 5,000 BC. Today, more than one billion pounds of pumpkins are produced each year in the United States and have come to symbolize the vibrant color and spirit of the fall season. The pumpkin’s popularity is evident in the number of pies and other seasonal treats—including coffee drinks— that are found everywhere this time of year. Their use as a seasonal decoration, both inside and out, whole or carved, is even more widespread. You can’t go very far without seeing some sort of Halloween or Thanksgiving décor that includes a pumpkin. Plus, it’s virtually impossible to escape the excitement inspired in children by the harvesting and carving of fall pumpkins. While Colorado farmers produce large crops of the gourd each year and pumpkin patches are common in our

state’s agricultural regions, mountain residents have to travel to Lakewood, Littleton and east of Boulder to be able to pick out a pumpkin from anything other than a bin at the grocery store. To make the pumpkin patch experience more convenient—and to celebrate the season—local “pumpkin patch” events have been created in recent years. For the second year, the Idaho Springs Chamber of Commerce hosts a Pumpkin Patch, Oct. 19, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., in Citizen’s Park, 1545 Miner St. According to the Chamber’s Executive Director Brandi Murphy, they will be offering a variety of pumpkin sizes for sale ranging from “little cuties to big ol’ fat boys.”There will be “Halloween-y” music playing and a photo frame to be used as a prop in people’s pictures. “I love the idea of more seasonal activities and offerings around town, since each season here in town brings its own charm and deserves celebration,” Murphy said. “Last year’s Patch was such a fun fall day and we are looking forward to even more fun this year, enhanced by spooky music and a couple of surprises up our sleeves. I hope to see some familiar faces.” The chamber sold a “good amount” of pumpkins last

year and have a deal with Scraps-to-Soil to donate any extra pumpkins to their Pumpkin SMASH, Nov. 2. The Idaho Springs Chamber of Commerce “promotes strong, ethical, cooperative business and professional relationships by nurturing and supporting community business in order to encourage a healthy economy for the Idaho Springs community.” Membership ranges from $50-$400. Visit idahospringschamber.org or call 303-567-0387 to learn more. The ever-popular Georgetown Loop Railroad Pumpkin Festival returns to the Silver Plume Station, 825 Railroad Ave., Oct. 5-6. The Pumpkin Fest train includes a train ride, face painting, games, a bounce castle, holiday characters and a free pumpkin to take home. Guests have the option of simply riding the train or participating in all Pumpkin Fest activities. Tickets are $21.50-$40.50. Call 888-456-6777 or visit georgetownlooprr.com/pumpkin-fest for additional details. Main Street Central City is hosting its third annual family- and pet-friendly Pumpkin Patch, Oct. 12-13, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., in the Big T Parking Lot, across from 141 Nevada St. There will be a variety of pumpkins for sale, a bounce castle as well as vendors, food from Large Marges Philly Steaks and Nicky’s Quickies Greek Food and more. There are also activities including pumpkin decorating and trunk-or-treating. The event is free and open to the public. The Main Street Central City organization—a volunteer effort by citizens, businesses, organizations and government to revitalize Main Street—relies heavily on community support and volunteers, and has several opportunities to get involved. E-mail lroemhildt@cityofcentral.co to learn more. Visit centralcitycolorado.us and facebook.com/mainstreetcentralcity or call 303-582-5251 for more information. In Evergreen, visit J P Total Lawn & Property, 4370 Independence Trail, for their annual Pumpkin Patch—held in their Christmas Tree Lot—which sells pumpkins as well as local jams honey and more. Annual event promotes composting

craps to Soil presents its 11th annual Pumpkin SMASH, Nov. 2, noon-4 p.m. at the Idaho Springs Ball Fields, 101 East Idaho Springs Road. The free, fun-filled day is designed to recycle pumpkins and bring awareness to composting and other community-minded sustainability solutions in a fun and engaging setting. Get “hands-on” with numerous techniques for pulverizing pumpkins into pieces including Gallagher mallets, Louisville Sluggers, Trebuchet launcher and the Sling Shot. There will be also be food and drink vendors along with a Pumpkin Piñata by Clear Creek County CSU Extension and Fire Authority, Chicken Poo Bingo, Pumpkin Archery, Obstacle Course, Zorb Ball, Blind Bucket Raffle, informational and retail booths, Pumpkin Bowling by Clear Creek Library District, photo booth and more. “My favorite part of the SMASH is watching adults have as much fun as the kids, Scraps-to-Soil co-founder Ursula Cruzalegui said. “I think the event has evolved where It used to be that parents would bring their kids—or kids will demand their parents to bring them—and end up doing some smashing too. Now we see adults come with or without a kid. It is awesome! It is truly a fun and educational event for all ages.” Scraps-to-Soil holds the Pumpkin SMASH each year after Halloween to explore composting and ways to contribute less to the waste stream. No matter the smash technique, participants will contribute to the “continuance of a community-wide composting crusade.” Bring any spent Jack-o-Lanterns to take part. There will also be pumpkins for sale for $1 or win “SMASH cash” to buy a pumpkin. Jut answer questions about composting and play games. Read the informational panels around the fields and then go to the Scraps-to-Soil tent to play and win. Attendees must register and sign a waiver. To avoid possible lines at the entry, pre-register on Eventbrite. The event happens rain, shine or snow. The Pumpkin Smash is a free educational event made possible by volunteers—including this year’s new coordinator Meghan Vickers—sponsorships, business donations and individual monetary donations, which can be made at scraps-to-soil.org. To volunteer at the event or help with the planning and preparation, e-mail info@scraps-to-soil.org or find Scraps-to-Soil, Neighborhood Compost Club on Facebook. ince 1912, Colorado State University Extension has been a trusted resource for “building and strengthening Colorado communities” with a mission to “provide information and education, and encourage the application of research-based knowledge in response to local, state and national issues affecting individuals, youth, families, agricultural enterprises and communities of Colorado.” The Clear Creek County Extension Office— established in October 2012 and run singlehandedly by CSU Extension Director and Agent Christine “Chris” Crouse—is the source of localized information for the “unique challenges” of mountain horticulture, energy efficiency and 4-H youth development. In addition to bringing the research and resources of the university within easy reach, the office runs several ongoing 4-H programs—including Tech Tuesday, Tiny Tech Tuesday, C4-Bots, information booths, after-school programs, workshops and more—as well as the Extension Wednesday series featuring a variety of activities and presentations. There’s also a mountain demonstration garden in Georgetown that provides information about plants that grow at altitude. Even though Clear Creek County Extension programming is limited, as a part of CSU Extension residents have access to a wealth of information and resources developed by Colorado State Extension on topics including agriculture, horticulture, range, forestry, water, health promotion, financial literacy, business management, community development and 4-H. “For me, programming in Clear Creek County is all about relationships; collaborative efforts with the schools, the Rec. Center/Kidz Korner, the libraries, the Georgetown Heritage Center, local garden clubs, other community organizations and businesses, county and municipal governmental departments, and other ExtenCLEAR CREEK

sion offices and agents,” Crouse said. “There are so many opportunities!” Crouse, who moved to Colorado in 1976, is a CSU Extension employee stationed in Clear Creek County “to serve the local community by providing informal, relevant and research-based educational opportunities and information.” The county provides her office and budget. She has a BA degree in Communication, cum laude, from CU Boulder, and has consulted on community relations and public involvement activities for numerous environmental/ engineering projects, worked in local journalism, was an elementary educator for Jefferson County Schools and was the Education Coordinator for the Bear Creek Watershed Association. She also served as the Executive Manager & Outreach/Education Coordinator for the Clear Creek Watershed Foundation for a decade. “In the fall of 2012, I took on the role of the first-ever CSU Extension Director and Agent in Clear Creek County,” Crouse said. “In this capacity I established an office and education/outreach programming from scratch. Crouse says she is involved with everything “full-circle”—including the abundance of paperwork—but couldn’t do it without her “amazing” volunteers and program partners. Volunteer 4-H leaders include Ann Hector, Kris Miller, Judy Baynes, Sam Braakman, Stephanie Mellon, Jim Leonard, Kent Brown and Mike Dipaolo. Her “Friends of Clear Creek Extension” Advisory Committee includes Phyllis Adams, Hector, Miller, Sally Guanella-Buckland and Christine Bradley. Get the most from Clear Creek County Extension by attending its events or help out by becoming a 4-H volunteer, Extension Advisory Committee member or Master Gardener. The deadline for new Clear Creek County Colorado Master Gardner applications is Nov. 22 at noon. Classes begin in January 2020.
