Welcome!
to the 17th Annual Frozen Dead Guy Days
hope many of you are returning and perhaps running into old familiar faces and to new guests way to freeze the day I hope you have a blast. Preparing for this year turned into a very reflective process for me remembering the early days and how many wonderful people have contributed their creativity, artistry, music and energy to weave the evolving tapestry that is FDGD. It has been an honor to work with (and drive nuts) so many terrific people and I’m so grateful for all the diverse participants that come to share some frosty joy with one another. Tip your servers, re-use your cup, make a new friend and be sure to leave your body hassles at the door! Be well & stay cool! — Amanda MacDonald, Festival Owner/Coordinator — Kallista Alli, Festival Co-Coordinator

WOLFY WOLF has been creating watercolor paintings for the past 36 years. His dry brush and saturation techniques give his paintings bright colors that are often mistaken for oil or acrylic. From his foundations in landscapes he has expanded into dreamscapes and abstractions. The artist grew up in the San Francisco bay area where he took up oil painting because Bob Ross made it look so easy. At San Francisco State University, his studies included painting, Avant Garde history, animation, photography, guitar and storytelling. He admires Frida Kahlo and is challenged by Alex Grey. His current works reflect his past years living in Nederland.

SAFETY & TRANSPORTATION
E
Plan ahead for a safe ride home before enjoying the wide range of craft beer and spirits at Frozen Dead Guy Days!
ach year in Colorado, more than 26,000 people are arrested for DUI and over 150 people are killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes – representing more than one-third of all traffic fatalities in Colorado. Additionally, driving under the influence of any drugs is illegal and just as deadly and dangerous as driving drunk. Keep in mind a person’s blood-alcohol level is the result of a complex interaction of weight, gender, alcohol consumed and time. Any amount of alcohol will impair your ability to drive. If you drive impaired by drugs – even if they’re legal drugs like prescriptions and marijuana – you can be arrested for DUI. Everyone involved with Frozen Dead Guy Days encourages everyone to be responsible and play safe with enjoying our winter celebration. Please Don’t Drive, Ride the Shuttle! This year, the festival has teamed up with Bus To Show to provide transportation to and from Denver (Champa Street Cheba Hut) and Boulder (Walnut at 9th streets) during the festival. Reservations are required. Bus To Show is offering $10 round trip Shuttles from Boulder & Denver from 4 p.m.-1:15 a.m. on Friday, March 9; 9 a.m.-1:15 a.m. Saturday, March 10; and 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 11. For information, schedules for Frozen Dead Guy Days and other upcoming events, email contactreservations@bustoshow.org or visit bustoshow.org. Bus To Show provides fun, safe and affordable rides to and from: concerts, musical festivals, community events, beer festivals, brewery tours, weddings, birthday parties and more. Its mission is to reduce intoxicated driving to and from high-risk events while simultaneously building a community among event-goers and raising funds for other causes by organizing and/or providing sober transporta-
tion in the form of bus parties. Bus to Show also works to reduce the amount of fuel consumption that results from events. Please Don’t Drive, Ride the Bus! Other safe options include RTD’s “N” bus line from Boulder Station to Nederland that links to more than 140 Local, Express and Regional bus routes serving 10,000 bus stops and six light rail lines. Call 303-299-6000 or visit www.rtd-denver.com for details. Other Options Dial 1-800-829-4222(TAXI-CAB) to be connected to taxi services in more than 50 Colorado cities and towns. If you can get service, use the promo code NODUICO to get $20 off your first ride on the Uber App or at www.uber.com. If you arrive by Uber, be sure you know how you will be getting home. Drivers will drop you off, but don’t always come back to pick up. Marijuana Safety Only licensed retail marijuana stores may sell retail marijuana, and only to those 21 and older. There are three dispensaries in Nederland. Retail marijuana is intended for private, personal use. Such use is only legal in certain locations not open or accessible to the public. Marijuana may not be consumed openly or publicly. Look for a Loopr bus parked in Nederland during the event to learn about the “ultimate hands-on cannabis experience.” Be aware: It is illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana and it can result in a DUI, just like alcohol. Anyone with 5 nanograms or more of THC per milliliter in whole blood while driving can be arrested for DUI. The consequences of DUI is dependent on the driver but they can include fines, jail time and a revoked license.

The Frozen History BY TERESA CRUSH WARREN | PHOTOS BY ANDREW WYATT
Nederland’s infamous winter festival, Frozen Dead Guy Days, has evolved over the past 17 years like a snowflake into a blizzard. No other place has such a frozen icon to celebrate. Call it cabin fever or the Rocky Mountain Mardi Gras, by the second weekend in March each year the natives get restless and are ready for a good ol’ mountain-style party in frozen fashion. Ranked by USA Today as one of the top five “Best Cultural Festivals of 2017,” winner of the Everfest 300 Award for “Best Festival in 2017” and Everfest’s “Favorite Unique Festival in 2015,” Frozen Dead Guy Days continues on its journey into this, the 17th year of putting on the best frickin’ freezer party in all the world. Frozen Dead Guy Days is based on the discovery of a man on dry ice in a shed on top of a hill overlooking the town. Nederland didn’t ask for this distinguished honor. He just seemingly landed in our backyard. Our controversial cryonaut, Bredo Morstol, pronounced (“breaddough more-stul”) was a native of Norway who died in 1989 at the age of 89 and was frozen by his grandson, Trygve Bauge, also a Norwegian national. Transported to the United States on dry ice, Morstol was stored at Trans Time’s facility in Oakland, CA until December 1993.

Trygve, who had a background in architecture and was then living in Nederland, had ambitions of setting up his own cryonics facility on property he owned near town. The proposed Rocky Mountain Life Extension Center “never did come into being as planned, but the upshot was that Morstol ended up in a shed on Trygve’s property. He rests there to this day, although the shed has been upgraded to a Tuff Shed, donated by the company several years ago. He is packed in dry ice which is replenished every month. Due to an expired visa and some other questionable antics, Trygve himself was deported back to Norway in December 1993, just after he had moved “Grandpa” here. After his exit, he was able to continue maintaining Bredo on dry ice through several proxies, or as we refer to them, “icemen.” Bo Shafer of Delta Technogroup, Inc. cared for Grandpa for 16 years. Brad Wickham, a Nederland resident, was Bo’s successor and continues serving in that role today. Although at first resistant and nervous, Nederland residents and officials gradually came to accept the frozen grandpa in their midst. Finally in 2002, the Chamber of Commerce, looking for a theme for a winter festival to draw visitors here during the slow Continued on page 16

time of year, decided to capitalize on the situation by inaugurating the Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival honoring our icy resident. The quirky event they created, which can be summarized as the best “Dead Man’s Party” in the world, has produced plenty of exciting moments in its history. Many have been documented by the national and international television and print media that attend annually. In 2002, the New York Times ran a story on its front page and a report from Reuter’s News Service brought in more than 50 interview requests from radio stations around the world. Bill Guist of CBS’ Sunday Morning News brought his camera crew in 2003 and articles have run in the Melbourne (Australia) Times, Forbes magazine, the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Enquirer, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, Sunset Magazine, Los Angeles Times, London Times, Associated Press, various newspapers and magazines in Norway, and more. One year, a Belgium reality television show filmed a Continued on page 18

segment during the event with Herbert Flack, a Belgian movie star. He went to local hangouts, recruited a coffin race team, built a coffin and ran the course. He also won the Grandpa Look-Alike contest after a professional makeup artist spent three hours turning his face into an icy monster. In 2014, a Japanese show filmed Itteq and Degaw, two of the country’s top TV stars taking part in the event. When they each submerged into the icy depths of the Polar Plunge, Itteq transformed into a butterfly and Degaw was inside a giant balloon that dramatically descended into the frigid water. Additionally, there have been specials about Frozen Dead Guy Days on Discovery Channel, Travel Show, Games Across America and On the Road TV, which included the festival in an hour special highlighting their pick of the best four festivals in the country. An episode of Booze Traveler filmed during last year’s festival featured video of host Jack Maxwell taking part in the event. Continued on page 20

The Frozen History Continued from page 18
In its 17 years, Frozen Dead Guy Days has seen an astounding and remarkable growth in attendance and size. The first year, which was just a single day, attracted 1,700 people. Last year’s attendance, for what is now a three-day event, was estimated to be close to 25,000. Over the years, various breweries have commemorated the event with their brews. They have included “Dead Guy Ale” by Rogue Brewing, New Belgium Brewery’s “Two Below,” “Six Feet Under ESB” by Wild Mountain Smokehouse & Brewery and this year’s “Bredo’s Brew” by Grossen Bart. Official poster designs have also evolved from the more stylized designs of the first eight years by Brent Warren to the more recent designs of poster artist Jay V. Rizzi. This year is the 17th year of Frozen Dead Guy Days, which just happens to contain 17 letters. We know that you will enjoy your time in Nederland at Frozen Dead Guy Days, so be sure to thanks the more than 100 volunteers who help make each aspect of the event run smoothly.

2018 PARADE MARSHAL
This is how Brent Warren will look leading the 2018 parade.
Brent Warren, one of the originators of Frozen Dead Guy Days, leads this year’s Parade of Coffin Racers & Hearses. He was part of a small group that proposed a mid-winter festival to the Nederland Board of Trustees in 2001. As the concept turned to reality, Warren began creating designs to capture the event’s absurdity. From 2002-2008, he created the festival and Blue Ball posters, which all feature “Grandpa” and a red circle symbolizing the sun melting Bredo’s frozen body. His parody pieces complement his work in paintings, sculpture, photography and digital photo art. Warren leads the parade proudly, as the town was won over with a festival that now has a life of its own.

New Disposition Methods For Bodies After Death
I
By Gail Rubin, CT
f you want to do something new and different with your body after death, but Grandpa Bredo’s cryonic state of suspended animation isn’t your thing, here are some options to consider. Warning: some of these approaches are still in experimental stages and may not be legal in your state.
ALKALINE HYDROLYSIS
Alkaline hydrolysis is an environmentally-friendly disposition approach that speeds up the natural process of decomposition using chemicals and water. The body is placed in a metal tank, then water and sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide is added. Amounts vary depending on body size and weight. Then the water temperature in the tank is increased, as well as air pressure in some equipment models. The body dissolves into the basic building blocks of life, resulting in a sterile coffee-colored liquid that goes down the drain (ick factor). Bones become sandy cremated remains which are returned to the family. Depending on the type of equipment used, the process can take five to 15 hours. Alkaline hydrolysis is making its way into funeral homes as an alternative to flame-based cremation. It’s got a number of benefits: • It uses a tenth of the energy required to cremate a body with a natural gas-fired machine. • There’s no emission of mercury from dental fillings. • The effluent is Ph balanced and good for sewage systems. • “Water cremation” often costs about the same as flamebased cremation. • More bone remains than those created by flame cremation are returned to the family. This process is currently legal in Colorado and 15 other states. The Mayo Clinic has used alkaline hydrolysis since 2007. Funeral homes in Maine, Florida, Minnesota, California and Illinois have these systems. Interest continues to grow. Ask

your local funeral home if they’re going to get in on this environmentally-friendly approach to cremation!
BODY COMPOSTING A.K.A. RECOMPOSITION
Got a compost pile where you generate nutrient-rich garden soil with vegetable scraps? That’s the idea behind Recompose. It’s an experiment to create corpse composting centers in urban areas, to minimize the use of cremation and its heavy carbon footprint, save limited developable land, and allow your dead body to create a better world. Recompose founder Katrina Spade started this disposition experiment as the Urban Death Project. In architecture school, she envisioned designing a place where city dwellers could transform their flesh into soil. She was inspired by livestock mortality composting, which has been done on farms for decades. Composting combines nitrogen (from bodies), carbon (from wood chips or sawdust), moisture and oxygen. The process breaks down tissue and releases heat which can reach 150°F, hot enough to kill most pathogens. It can reduce a whole cow, including the bones, into nutrient-rich soil within nine months. Why not do it with people? Recomposition will remove carbon dioxide from the air and improve soil health. Spade’s team calculates carbon savings of over a metric ton per person each time recomposition is chosen over cremation or conventional burial. Recompose is a benefit corporation powered by people who believe in changing the death care paradigm. Their first facility will eventually be built in Seattle, Washington. Learn more at www.Recompose.life.
FREEZE DRYING WITH PROMESSION®
The Promession® process, a.k.a. cryomation, offers an environmentally-friendly advancement over conventional burial and cremation. You can be chilled like Grandpa Bredo, but then

There are cemeteries that offer natural burial with no vault or liner, such as Seven Stones Botanical Gardens Cemetery in Littleton. Can you believe that Colorado puts on two coffin races a year?
L
ike Nederland’s Frozen Dead Guy Days Coffin Races, the Emma Crawford Coffin Races in Manitou Springs are steeped in a rich and amusing history. In the late 1890s, a young woman named Emma Crawford died in Manitou Springs when the local mineral water “cure” failed to heal her tuberculosis. When she died, her wish to be buried on top of Red Mountain towering over Manitou Springs was honored. Following several years of rain and harsh weather, Emma and her coffin slid down the mountain into the canyon below where her name plate and silver casket handles were found. When Mayor Bud Ford and other locals wanted to start a fun and funky festival to bring people into town in 1994, they remembered Emma Crawford and the story of her washed out coffin. Taking place the last week-end of October, the Emma Crawford Coffin Races & Parade is a one-day celebration with up to 70 teams competing for glory. Race teams consist of an Emma and four runners dressed in costume who push their coffins on wheels down Manitou Avenue to earn trophies for the fastest times, Best Miss Emma, Best Entourage, and Best Coffin. In 2005, two-time Emma Crawford Coffin Race team winner, the “Manitou Tus,” were looking for a new coffin race challenge. The team, which came together to win the 2003 KBCO Cardboard Derby Race at Copper Mountain, earned the fastest coffin time in Manitou Springs later that year, and again in 2004. The enthusiasm and determination of Rick McKinney, a graduate of Manitou Springs High School and Captain of the “Manitou Tus,” led them to compete in the Frozen Dead Guy Days Coffin Races in March of 2005. The team arrived Nederland bearing the Coffin Cup and challenged our race participants to the fastest time. The “Manitou Tus” faced stiff competition against Nederland’s “Over the Rainbow” team but presided as winners. Since then, the Coffin Cup has remained frozen in time, protected by the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce. We don’t want the tradition to die, so the Coffin Cup Challenge is being resurrected this year (after 12 years of being buried)! Manitou and Nederland are coffin race pioneers, so this “coffin-off ” is a big deal. Team Fossil of Manitou Springs will take on the 2018 FDGD team with the best time. In October, this FDGD team will go to Manitou to race the Emma Crawford team with the best time.
