The
Frozen History BY TERESA CRUSH WARREN
N
ederland’s infamous winter festival, Frozen Dead Guy Days, has evolved over the past 17 years like a snowflake into a blizzard. No other place has such a frozen icon to celebrate. Call it cabin fever or the Rocky Mountain Mardi Gras, by the second weekend in March each year the natives get restless and are ready for a good ol’ mountain-style party in frozen fashion. Ranked by USA Today as one of the top five “Best Cultural Festivals of 2017,” winner of the Everfest 300 Award for “Best Festival in 2017” and Everfest’s “Favorite Unique Festival in 2015,” Frozen Dead Guy Days continues on its journey into this, the 18th year of putting on the best frickin’ freezer party in all the world. Frozen Dead Guy Days is based on the discovery of a man on dry ice in a shed on top of a hill overlooking the town. Nederland didn’t ask for this distinguished honor. He just seemingly landed in our backyard. Our controversial cryonaut, Bredo Morstol, pronounced (“breaddough more-stul”) was a native of Norway who died in 1989 at the age of 89 and was frozen by his grandson, Trygve Bauge, also a Norwegian national. Transported to the United States on dry ice, Morstol was stored at Trans Time’s facility in Oakland, CA until December 1993. Continued on page 14

The Frozen History Continued from page 12
Trygve, who had a background in architecture and was then living in Nederland, had ambitions of setting up his own cryonics facility on property he owned near town. The proposed Rocky Mountain Life Extension Center “never did come into being as planned, but the upshot was that Morstol ended up in a shed on Trygve’s property. He rests there to this day, although the shed has been upgraded to a Tuff Shed, donated by the company several years ago. He is packed in dry ice which is replenished every month. Due to an expired visa and some other questionable antics, Trygve himself was deported back to Norway in December 1993, just after he had moved “Grandpa” here. After his exit, he was able to continue maintaining Bredo on dry ice through several proxies, or as we refer to them, “icemen.” Bo Shafer of Delta Technogroup, Inc. cared for Grandpa for 16 years. Brad Wickham, a Nederland resident, was Bo’s successor and continues serving in that role today. Although at first resistant and nervous, Nederland residents and officials gradually came to accept the frozen grandpa in their midst. Finally in 2002, the Chamber of Commerce, looking for a theme for a winter festival to draw visitors here during the slow time of year, decided to capitalize on the situation by inaugurating the Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival honoring our icy resident. The quirky event they created, which can be summarized as the best “Dead Man’s Party” in the world, has produced plenty of exciting moments in its history. Many have been documented by the national and international television along with the print media that attend annually. In 2002, the New York Times ran a story on its front page and a report from Reuter’s News Service brought in more than 50 interview requests from radio stations around the world. Bill Guist of CBS’ Sunday Morning News brought his camera crew in 2003 and articles have run in the Melbourne (Australia) Times, Forbes magazine, the Boston Globe, Philadelphia Enquirer, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, Sunset Magazine, Los Angeles Times, London Times, Associated Press, various newspapers and magazines Continued on page 16

in Norway, and more. One year, a Belgium reality television show filmed a segment during the event with Herbert Flack, a Belgian movie star. He went to local hangouts, recruited a coffin race team, built a coffin and ran the course. He also won the Grandpa Look-Alike contest after a professional makeup artist spent three hours turning his face into an icy monster. In 2014, a Japanese show filmed Itteq and Degaw, two of the country’s top TV stars taking part in the event. When they each submerged into the icy depths of the Polar Plunge, Itteq transformed into a butterfly and Degaw was inside a giant balloon that dramatically descended into the frigid water. Additionally, there have been specials about Frozen Dead Guy Days on Discovery Channel, Travel Show, Games Across America and On the Road TV, which included the festival in an hour special highlighting their pick of the best four festivals in the country. An episode of Booze Traveler filmed during last year’s festival featured video of host Jack Continued on page 18

Maxwell taking part in the event. In its 18 years, Frozen Dead Guy Days has seen an astounding and remarkable growth in attendance and size. The first year, which was just a single day, attracted 1,700 people. The attendance the past couple of years—for what is now a three-day event—is estimated to have been close to 25,000. Over the years, several breweries have commemorated the event with their brews. They include “Dead Guy Ale” by Rogue Brewing, New Belgium Brewery’s “Two Below,” “Six Feet Under ESB” by Wild Mountain Smokehouse & Brewery and “Bredo’s Brew” by Grossen Bart. Official poster designs have also evolved from the more stylized designs of the first eight years by Brent Warren to the more recent designs of poster artist Jay V. Rizzi. We know that you will enjoy your time in Nederland at Frozen Dead Guy Days, so be sure to thank the more than 100 volunteers who help make the event, and it’s many facets, run smoothly.

ome years she had rosy cheeks from the cold, other years she would be wearing her trademark tights and long sleeve T-shirt because the sun was so warm. She could be seen taking pictures of truckloads of snow being shipped into Chipeta Park or Guercio Field depending on the year, or walking with the parade taking pictures of hearses with all their theatrical displays from their occupants. “Tell me about yourself” she’d say unfazed, as she photographed the gory or eerily costumed out-of-towners who come to mingle with the locals in celebration of not just the dead but a particular Dead Guy. She could take pictures of the Salmon Toss at the same time she was attending the Frozen T-shirt Contest across town, like a shape shifter making sure every event got its due coverage. Ever excited about the latest addition to the festival, she’d cover it in detail and make sure to ask any friend she encountered “Did you see that?!?” as she was rushing off to the next event. Carrying on with the frenzy, she loved it and would barely contain herself long enough to refuel or take a brief rest before going to the late night bands and the famous Blue Ball. TRIBUTE: Barbara Lawlor Continued from page 20
The entire community relied on her to be there documenting the festival and hope that she caught on camera the latest year’s crazy carried away antics from locals or weekend warriors staying in town for the event from start to finish. Volunteers and employees of the festival were used to seeing her worming her way to the front of any crowd, ducking around barricades and temporary fences to get that great angle for which she is famous. Come rain, snow, shine, or high winds, everyone knew she would be there. So, it will come as no surprise if during this year’s celebrations, we catch glimpses of her giggling as she watches the Polar Plunge from a perch on high, or interviewing Bredo as he basks in the attention he is accustomed to getting each year. Flitting around First Street weaving in and out of the parade attendees, dancing among the Ice Queen candidates and flirting with all the handsome young men. If you feel a tap on your shoulder from behind, make sure to turn with a smile. For you can be sure that Barbara Lawlor will be there with a camera before her face taking photos from the other side. This year, we honor the passing of Barbara Lawlor, beloved Nederland Mountain-Ear newspaper journalist that never failed to give the Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival well -rounded coverage with great enthusiasm and largesse.

Marshals of the Parade
Parade marshals, ice queens and Grandpa look-alike winners are seen the lead hearses.
Festival parade honors long-time residents
BY STEPHANIE ANDELMAN f you’ve lived in Nederland over 20 years, we celebrate your sustenance, contributions, and toleration for wind. For this year’s festival, we recruited five long-time Nederland residents who characterize our eclectic community and have helped put our town on the map. Each one of these long timers were first drawn to Nederland’s rustic mountain town atmosphere, and they all settled in among their chosen family. Rooted here until they join Grandpa in after life, they keep Nederland alive with their stories, professions, and volunteerism. You will see all five of these specially selected Grand Marshals leading the 2019 Parade of Coffin Racers & Hearses.
I
Bunny Spangler
B
unny Spangler moved to Nederland in 1971, when there were less than 500 residents. It was an idyllic, quiet spot for her and her dog where the climate spoke to her soul. Just over a year later, she bought the infamous Pioneer Inn, which was the town’s gathering place. Deemed a “safe haven,” patrons left weapons and opinions at the door. Music was a staple, and dozens of renowned bands, recording at the nearby Caribou Ranch Recording Studio, would come and play—Dan Fogelberg, Stevie Wonder, Joe Walsh, and Stevie Nicks to name a few. For 39 years, Bunny took care of her employees, entertainers, and customers with a warm smile and appreciation for the unique. She now volunteers endlessly and enjoys her freedom to play on the ski slopes.
36
Barbara Hardt
B
arbara Hardt moved to the Nederland area in the mid-1980s. She raised four children here and purchased Nederland’s weekly community paper, the Mountain-Ear. An avid horse rider, Barbara balances her commitment to sharing community news with her love for nature. She always makes herself available to help out those less fortunate than her and gives everyone a voice. Whether she’s running a nonprofit on the side, enjoying live music, or getting the latest scoop, Barbara continues to connect the fabric of Nederland one stitch at a time.

Chris Perret
C
hris Perret drove into Nederland as “Even in the Quietest Moments” was blaring on his radio. Supertramp recorded the song at Caribou Ranch, and Chris knew at that moment, the small town was to be his home. The robust music scene, events, support for local businesses, and opportunities to get involved have kept him humming. He started a family and has opened four businesses in town, fixing people’s cars and keeping people safe, peacefully. His coffin racing team won best theme three years in a row, and “The Munsters” are still sorely missed. When Chris was Mayor of Nederland from 2004-2006, he toured international media around the festival and still raced the Dr. Fix-It coffin, carrying one of his kids inside. Continued on page 38

Marshals of the Parade Continued from page 36
Eric Mix
E
ric Mix visited Nederland every summer of the 1970s with his father so they could hike and fish in the wilds. Eric knew from the time he was seven years old that he would end up in Ned. After serving in the Marine Corps and starting a family in Pennsylvania. Eric was brought back to Ned in 2000 to build a log home as a contractor. Fate was fulfilled, and his lifelong desire to live here was realized. Eric spearheaded “Working Man’s Dead” coffin racing team which was the reigning champion for the festival’s first three years. As long as Nederland remains without a traffic light, Eric will remain here with his family of friends.
38
Greg ‘Toastie’ Post
G
reg “Toastie” Post anchored in Nederland in 1987 and learned how the wind blows through his roofing business of 28 years. When the festival was founded, he entered the Grandpa Look-Alike contest and won two years in a row (2001 and 2002). A dead-on re-creation of FDGD’s version of Grandpa Bredo Morstoel, Toastie reflects on those early festival years and thaws out every year to join in the frozen fun.
Frozen Dead Guy Days 2019 | frozendeadguydays.org
These Grand Marshals applaud the festival for boosting the town’s economy when it used to be the winter slump. Positive for the businesses and musicians, town folk also benefit from attending so much fun so close. FDGD allowed Bunny to get through the season, and its many events give Barbara fascinating content to cover. It provided Chris, Eric, and Toastie with events that brought the community together, cheering for their wins. As these five Ned locals turn into Marshals of the Parade on Saturday, give them waves of appreciation for adding to the town spirit that never dies.

Drop by the Caribou Shopping Center at 20 Lakeview Drive, Unit 208 to see Grandpa’s in the TUFF Shed and catch The Newly-Dead Game during the festival!
A Short History of The Newly-Dead Game
In March of 2010, the ABC Nightly News ran a national story about this crazy festival in Nederland, Colorado. From my home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was transfixed by images of coffin racing over a snowy obstacle course, a parade of hearses, and costumed polar plunging. I said to myself, “I don’t know how, but next year, I’m going to be there as part of that festival.” At the time, I was writing my book A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die and working with a marketing guru. He suggested creating a game that would be fun as well as educational and came up with the title. The Newly-Dead Game is based on the idea behind the classic television show, The Newlywed Game. Couples are quizzed on how well they know their partner’s last wishes. The couple that gets the most questions right win “valuable prizes.” The first year at Frozen Dead Guy Days, we played the game in a tent during breaks between musical acts. I froze at a windswept information table the rest of the time. In subsequent years, I took on the responsibility of also showing the humorous documentary “Grandpa’s in the TUFF Shed.” The 1998 film tells the strange but true story of how Bredo Morstoel came to be the Frozen Dead Guy. It also got me out of the cold and into a comfortable indoor setting. Continued on page 42

Newly-Dead Game
How You Can Play
Continued from page 40
Why is it NOT so simple to answer these questions? Consider Question Two about disposition plans. There are so many choices and variations on those choices!
Burial
There are different ways to put a body in the ground these days. It’s not just the “traditional” approach with a casket and vault. You can be eco-friendly with your burial. There are green burial grounds in Colorado, including Seven Stones Botanical Garden Cemetery in Littleton (www.DiscoverSevenStones.com). There, you can be placed directly in contact with the earth, wrapped in a shroud or in a biodegradable casket. If you come to play The Newly-Dead Game or see “Grandpa’s in the TUFF Shed,” you can see examples of a bamboo casket and biodegradable urns from green funeral product provider Passages International. If you or your spouse is a veteran, you can both be buried in a national cemetery at no cost. All you need is the DD214 form. It’s a certificate that details discharge from active duty in the U.S. military, and it’s the proof needed to get a burial plot or cremation niche with military honors. While veterans’ cemetery costs are covered, funds are needed to pay for the services of a funeral home. Your family does have the option to do a home funeral and handle the required paperwork themselves. You can even be buried on private property, with the proper zoning and paperwork.
Cremation
Most people think of fire when pondering cremation. You may think it’s a greener disposition, but fire-based cremation has a significant carbon footprint. A natural gas-fired cremation generates about 532 pounds of CO2 when processing an average-sized person. Continued on page 44

Both the Couples and Individuals editions of The Newly-Dead Game pose four questions. While couples will be asked different questions, individuals have four simple questions to answer. However, your answers may not be so simple. The questions are: 1. Do you have a will? 2. What are your disposition plans? 3. Do you have advance medical directives? 4. Do you have a final resting place for your mortal remains? In the Individuals edition, choose one of four answers for each question. The number of points you get for your answer depends on your degree of preparedness. The last answer is always, “I don’t care. I’ll be dead.” Strategy hint: You won’t get any points for that answer.
Newly-Dead Game Continued from page 42
To put that in perspective, I have 18 solar panels on my house, a 4.05-kilowatt system. The monitoring system indicates how much CO2 is offset by generating electricity from the sun. It would take 14 sunny days to offset ONE CREMATION. Multiply 532 by the more than 1.5 million people choosing cremation every year. This adds up to a significant carbon footprint. Plus, cremation vaporizes mercury in dental fillings, releasing it into the atmosphere. But did you know there’s an eco-friendly cremation option now available in Colorado that’s based on water? It’s called Aquamation, and it uses one-tenth of the energy used in fire-based cremation. A combination of warm water and alkalinity gently speeds up the process of decomposition to the bones. These cremated remains are returned to the family. Mercury and other metals in the body can be safely reclaimed and recycled. Really, wouldn’t you rather have a final warm bath than a trip to a blast furnace? You can get more information about Aquamation at “Grandpa’s in the TUFF Shed” showings, any of the game sessions, or online at www.AquamationInfo.com.
Other Options
Would you like to be preserved like Grandpa in a state of cryogenic suspended animation? It’s expensive, but available in a few states. You could donate your body to science, and in exchange, get a free cremation. Whole body burial at sea is an option. Human body composting, called recomposition, is under consideration to become legal in the state of Washington. Sorry, “Just put me out with the trash” is not a legal option.
Don’t Care?
When you say, “I don’t care. I’ll be dead,” you leave your loved ones with a heavy choice to make with heavy hearts. They will likely fight, stress, overspend, and feel worse than they might had you planned ahead. Remember, you get zero points for this choice.

ederland’s Grandpa Bredo may have inspired a festival, but for most of us who live among him, I’ve never heard one person who thinks he could actually come back to life. He has been frozen with dry ice since he arrived in Nederland around 1992. And there have been a few times between caretakers that he has thawed, evident by his living neighbors who talked of seeing murders of crows flying overhead. Even though Bredo doesn’t have much hope of coming back alive, the idea of life extension has become more popular than ever before. It is said that Google has a secret department whose sole purpose is to study life extension. In the scientific world, more and more research is using cryogenics to help breed better livestock. Encouraging developments in cryogenically freezing human organ tissue have happened in the last few years. With so great a need for organs (60 percent of organs donated today die before they can be used.), finding a way to harvest and keep donated organs alive would guarantee there will never be a shortage. So us humans are very receptive and curious about cryogenics. But we are also curious about what happens to us after death. We all have heard about someone dying, seeing the brilliant light in the tunnel and meeting dead loved ones, only to come back to life. Continued on page 48

A survey done by TODAY showed that 55 percent of people are absolutely certain there is an afterlife, 37 percent are not certain and 8 percent are certain there isn’t an afterlife. For some who have been through near-death experiences, the question has a clear answer. Anita Moorjam wrote a book about her afterlife experience, “Dying to Be Me” in 2015. ”I believe that I died, yes — that I crossed over into the afterlife and back,” said Moorjani, adding that the afterlife is “like being in a really unlimited space and time.” Diagnosed with lymphoma in 2002, Moorjani — who considers her-self more spiritual than religious — was Anita Moorjani losing her cancer battle, withering down to just 85 pounds and battling tumors from the base of her skull to her abdomen. She slipped into a coma in 2006. Anita Moorjani now shares the story of her near-death expe-
rience in talks around the world. She said that’s when she died and crossed over to an afterlife. “I felt as though I was above my body,” she said. “It was like I had 360-degree peripheral vision of the whole area around. But not just in the room where my body was in, but beyond the room.” According to Moorjani, she was reunited in that state with her late father, who told her to turn back. “He said that I’ve gone as far as I can, and if I go any further, I won’t be able to turn back,” she said. “But I felt I didn’t want to turn back, because it was so beautiful. It was just incredible, because, for the first time, all the pain had gone. All the discomfort had gone. All the fear was gone. I just felt so incredible. And I felt as though I was enveloped in this feeling of just love. Unconditional love.” Citing an “incredible clarity where everything started to make sense,” she said she decided to return to her body beContinued on page 50

cause she believed “it would heal very, very quickly.” It did. “Within four days, my tumors shrunk by 70 percent, and the doctors were shocked,” she said. “And I kept telling everyone that, ‘I know I’m going to be okay. I know it’s not my time to die.’” This phenomenon and the public’s obsession with it has to date way be-fore modern time. The “Father” of modern NDA (Near Death Experience), Raymond Moody, wrote the groundbreaking book “Life After Life” in 1975. This bestselling classic is now available in a special fortieth-anniversary edition that includes a new Foreword from Even Alexander, M.D., author of Proof of Heaven, and a new Afterword by the author. Raymond Moody Moody was a pioneer in the elusive science whose work and research , transformed the world, revolutionizing the way we think about death and what lies beyond. It is the ground-breaking study of one hundred people

who experienced “clinical death” and were revived, and who tell, in their own words, what lies beyond death. “Life After Life” introduced us to concepts—including the bright light, the tunnel, the presence of loved ones waiting on the other side—that have become cultural memes today. The book has sold over 13 million copies, so I think it’s safe to say that at least 13 million people were interested enough in the concept that they bought the book. A quick Google search will reveal millions videos about people’s personal after-life experiences. Perhaps these two human obsessions are linked in some way. Maybe the common denominator is healing. Many stories about coming back to life after death include some healing of pain for the survivor. Certainly cryogenics, even though a tad further out there, is also about healing. Certainly when the first human to survive a cryogenic frozen state, we will be asking her, “What was it like on the other side?”

nce again, Nederland will compete against Manitou Springs, two Colorado towns with rich traditions in coffin racing, in this year’s Coffin Cup Challenge during the Coffin Races at Frozen Dead Guy Days. In 1995, the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce started the Emma Crawford Coffin Races - our nation’s first coffin races. Ten years later, they sent their winning team, the “Manitou Tus,” to compete with the Frozen Dead Guy Days winning team. This first coffinoff competition for the fastest time awarded Manitou Springs with the Coffin Cup in 2005. The competition was resurrected last year, when Manitou’s “Team Fossil” retained the cup after a head-to-head race against FDGD’s two-time champs, “The Nerds.” The team (now known as “Stranger Springs: The Upside Down”) were then invited to compete in the Emma Crawford Coffin Races, and they killed it by beating “Team Fossil.” Not only did they reclaim the Cup for FDGD, they also came in third overall! Nederland encourages racers and fans to check out the 25th Annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races and Festival, Oct. 26. The fastest team in this year’s Coffin Races will go against Manitou’s selected team, the “Sparkly Unicorn Coffin Mafia Solutions.” Hopefully Nederland will keep the Cup and the pride of Frozen Dead Guy Days. 2019’s overall fastest team will head to Manitou Springs in October, proving that Nederland deserves to display the Coffin Cup until the end of days.
