Enjoy special days, ‘love your library’ in February

In February, there are several things to celebrate. The month features events, holidays and religious observances including the Super Bowl, Feb. 2; Ground Hog Day, Feb. 2; Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14; Presidents Day, Feb. 17; and Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26. Black History Month takes place during February because Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were both born during the month. It’s also National Heart Month and spring training for Major League Baseball kicks off.

February is also Library Lovers’ Month, a month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types. It is a time for everyone, especially library support groups, to recognize the value of libraries and work to assure our libraries continue to serve.

Libraries depend on the support of the entire community to ensure they remain free to the millions of people who visit in person or via the web each year. According to the Friends & Foundations of California Libraries,

there are many ways to “love your library” including contributing, being a friend of the library, volunteering and promoting. In February, and all year, think about donating your time, money and expertise to your local library.

One of the best ways to support a library is to join its nonprofit Friends of the Library group. Membership fees are usually minimal. These volunteers provide fundraising and other assistance at libraries for services and activities not covered by the budget.

The Gilpin County Public Library, 15131 Hwy. 119, has an active Friends program that hosts book sales and other fundraising activities to support programs including a summer music series and artist-in-residence program. The nonprofit Nederland Community Library Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Nederland Community Library. It hosts an annual book sale. There are up to 14 board members responsible for planning and carrying out the goals and purposes of the Foundation. The Friends of the Lyons Regional Library, 451 4th Ave., is a nonprofit organization of volunteers supporting the library by “fostering public awareness, sharing enthusiasm for learning, enhancing the library’s service to the community.” The Annual Friends membership meeting is held in the spring of the year and will be posted on the library calendar and Facebook as well as emailed to members. The Friends Board meeting locations and times vary to ensure board members can attend. Forestry project closes trails on February weekdays BOULDER COUNTY Beginning Monday, Feb. 3, through Friday, Feb. 28, the Lichen Loop and the Grindstone Quarry Trail at Heil Valley Ranch north of Boulder will be closed Monday through Friday for helicopter operations related to a forestry project.

A helicopter will be used to remove cut material due to severe topography, highly-erodible soils, and other environmental factors. The trails will be open all weekends, Presidents Day www.mmacmonthly.com

The hazardous fuels reduction treatment project is planned as part of the North Foothills Open Space Management Plan and Parks & Open Space Forest Management Policy.

The management plan sets forest management objectives to thin the forest to reduce risk from catastrophic wildfires.

The project is funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program, Colorado State Forest Service Forest Restoration and Wildfire Risk Mitigation grant funding, and matching Boulder County funding.

Bluegrass band incorporates Latin American styles NEDERLAND he Apalache is a four-man string band based in Buenos Aires with members from Argentina, Mexico and the United States. The band—nominated for a Grammy Award this year—performs, Feb. 28, 9 p.m., at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Dr. Leftover Salmon’s Andy Thorn and Grant Farm’s Tyler Grant opens. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. The concert is one of only two public Front Range performances before the band returns to Colorado to play the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June.

Che Apalache began as a bluegrass band, but eventually incorporated Latin American styles into its repertoire. Combining instrumental prowess with tight vocal harmonies, they have curated an authentic blend of genres to reflect the nature of their lives, evoking images from Appalachia to the Andes. Their most recent album, Rearrange My Heart, is produced by banjo legend and crossgenre trailblazer Béla Fleck.

The founder of Che Apalache is fiddle player Joe Troop, a North Carolinian multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and composer who moved to Argentina in 2010. While carving out a niche in the local music scene, Troop taught bluegrass and old-time for a living. That’s how he met banjo player Pau Barjau, guitarist Franco Martino and mandolin player Martin Bobrik, his most dedicated students. They quickly became picking buddies and in 2013 decided to hit the stage. More than nine years later, the band is taking audiences by storm with its fusion of Latin and American roots music.

Immigration is a powerful topic for Troop. A polymath, polyglot, and world traveller, he left home at a young age, emigrating from this country in search of a better life. Raised in the North Carolina Piedmont, in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, Troop came of age to the music of bluegrass and all-night jam sessions at festivals, but being a young, gay man in the South, at a certain point he no longer felt welcome in his own home region.

He took refuge abroad, traveling Europe and immersing himself in his two great loves: music and language. He studied Spanish in Spain, spent summers in Morocco, and eventually moved to Japan to teach English. He carried his

music and his fiddle with him always, picking up elements of flamenco, jazz manouche and swing.

Fleck was so taken with the band that he signed on to produce its latest album. “I love to work with music that intrigues, excites and inspires me,” Fleck explains, “and that describes Che Apalache to a T! We first met at my Blue Ridge Banjo Camp last year. They had come from Buenos Aires and asked to play for me. I was blown away and they blew away the crowd a few days later. It’s been a blast to get to know them in the creative environment; together we’ve come up with what I believe is a truly striking album. I hope you’ll enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed producing.”

Che Apalache was formed to enjoy music, to honor it, and to bridge the gap between North and South America, creating a vision of a truly “American” music. Through the controversy and the political fire that fuels Che Apalache’s music, Troop hasn’t lost sight of what first inspired him, the first moment he fell in love with the music. At just fourteen years old, in a small diner in Boone, North Carolina, he heard a humble man playing with his friends and family. That man was Doc Watson. For Troop and Che Apalache to come full circle and to create a new album with another legend of bluegrass, Béla Fleck, that’s the American dream that Che Apalache embodies.

hunder and Rain, a Golden-based acoustic act specializing in “mountain made Colorado country,” released its third album, Passing in the Night, in January. It features music inspired by genres including folk, country, bluegrass, old-time and pop, made cohesive by band leader and songwriter Erinn Peet-Lukes’ “nimble, yet devastating” vocals, heartfelt lyricism and high-level musicianship from mandolinist Dylan McCarthy, bassist Ian Haegele and Allen Cooke on Dobro.

The album was written after Peet-Lukes, known for her confessional songwriting that comes directly from her life, went through a breakup within the band. If the album was a movie, it would be a “series of vingnettes, detailing the different ways two people can meet, connect, and then disappear from each other’s lives.” It was recorded over eight days in April 2019 at Swingfingers Studio in Fort Collins.

“I know everyone’s albums are personal to them, but I’ll hold our new album close to my heart always, I know it,” Peet-Lukes said in a recent Facebook post. “[We] produced this record ourselves, and I’m so proud of that. We made an album exactly the way we wanted to. I wrote a lot of these songs with fewer edits than I would normally make.

It’s raw, it’s real, it’s us!”

Peet-Lukes has been described as having “an angelic voice that soars over a blanket of acoustic sound.” Fans love her strong, yet vulnerable way of conveying her songs. She’s been compared to Natalie Maines, Linda Ronstadt, and Alison Krauss. In 2018, she became a New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Haegele graduated with a masters in Bass Performance from UNC Greeley, and McCarthy and Cooke are at the top of their fields on their instruments. Cooke won the Rockygrass Dobro Championship in 2014 and McCarthy won the Rockygrass Mandolin Championship in 2019. The band was a finalist in the Rockygrass Band Competition in 2014 and named “Best Bluegrass Band” by Westword in 2016.

Film festival celebrates international art of cinema BOULDER he 16th Boulder International Film Festival, March 5-8, brings films and filmmakers from around the world to Boulder for a celebration of the art of cinema. It consistently features a wide variety of films from local, national, and international filmmakers, including many that have gone on to significant box-office success and multiple Oscar nominations. Adding to the BIFF experience are events featuring nationally renowned chefs, filmmaker happy hours, multiple opening night galas, talented musicians and much more.

Films are also screened at the Longmont Museum, 400 Quail Road, March 6-8.

A full film program is revealed on the festival’s website on Feb. 14.

The Lyons Arts and Humanities Commission is now orchestrating two tandem quarterly art show series in 2020: the continuing Quarterly Town Hall Art Show series and the new LAHC’s Quarterly Lyons Regional Library Show series.

‘Epic’ Show Third generation continues 100-year-old touring circus tradition

Enjoy Chinese acrobats, daring aerial artists, motorcycles in the “Sphere of Fear,” racing camels performing with the largest and smallest horses on Earth, contortionists, clowns, jugglers and much more.

The circus also features season seven of America’s Got Talent winner Olate Dog Act. The American dog trick act stars father-and-son trainers Richard and Nicholas Olate. The act features numerous tricks such as dogs jumping rope, going down slides, and riding scooters as well as a doggy conga line and a pooch that does back flips.

The third-generation-owned circus, which began in Canada more than 100 years ago and is now based in Florida, also includes a Kid’s Fun Zone with camel rides, circus pony, giant slide or bouncy house and face painting. There is also plenty of food and traditional circus treats.

The first 100 adult tickets sold online are $14.50 and free children’s tickets have been distributed to area elementary schools, pre-schools, day care centers, fast food, convenience stores, salons and large employers. “We’ve made it a real affordable family event with the cooperation of participating retail outlets” Producer of Garden Brothers Circus Niles Garden said.

Adult tickets, after the first 100, range in price from $27 early purchase general admission to $37 for ringside seats. Children are $12.50 general admission and $22 for ringside seats. A special VIP Family Pack Ringside seating package for two adults and two children is offered for $70.

Access winter’s wilderness wonders with snowshoes, local trails

C

olorado and the Peak to Peak region is a yearround destination offering unmatched potential for adventure, while breathtaking scenic landscapes provides opportunity for winter experiences on trails normally popular in the summer.

Outdoor enthusiasts celebrate winter in the region because with the falling snow comes a new selection of activities to be enjoyed on the area’s diverse trails. Along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway a pair of snowshoes or waterproof boots can unveil a hidden world of winter beauty and sensational settings. If well prepared, winter hiking is a wonderful way to stay active and in tune with nature.

As amazing as it can be, hazards exist when in the backcountry. Anyone planning to participate in winter sports must be prepared for avalanches, quick changes in weather and exhaustion. Snow can hide dangers like cliffs, rock fall, tree wells and deadfall.

Skills and gear to handle the risks are essential. Always check conditions—including the latest data and warnings from Colorado Avalanche Information Center at avalanche.state.co.us—weather and maps before leaving and dress in layers with insulating, waterproof clothing. Protect eyes and skin from the sun with sunglasses and sunscreen and carry water.

There are many popular places to enjoy trails and explore winter scenery and tranquility along the Peak to Peak Byway. Snowshoe rentals and sales can be found in Nederland and Estes Park and numerous places in the metro area. Here are a few suggestions to explore further.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Dense pine forests and 36 miles of trails make this state park in Gilpin County a prime spot for snowshoeing. The park’s Panorama Point Scenic Overlook offers views of more than 100 miles of the Continental Divide. Many of the roads and camping loops in Reverend’s Ridge Campground are closed and not plowed in winter making it an ideal play park for beginners. The terrain is mostly flat and snow generally holds all season. The Raccoon Trail Loop is a moderate 2.5 mile loop accessed from Reverend’s Ridge Campground or Panorama Point Scenic Overlook. In wet or dry years, this is one of the better choices for winter use. It generally has good snow and always good scenery. James Peak Wilderness

Adjacent to the Continental Divide and Indian Peaks Wilderness to the north, the 17,015 acre James Peak Wilderness is located within Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties and receives a large amount of snow each winter. The area includes several peaks over 13,000 feet and more than a dozen alpine lakes.

From the East Portal of the Moffat Train Tunnel, the South Boulder Creek Trail heads west. After a mile the Forest Lakes trail forks to the north. Both South Boulder Creek Trail and Forest Lakes Trail are popular ski or snowshoe treks to alpine lakes. Hessie Trailhead

The Hessie Trailhead near Nederland is a popular winter destination with trails leading through pine forests to Lost Lake, King Lake and beyond. Winter parking is in the town of Eldora about a mile short of the trailhead. Snowshoers of all levels will enjoy the history, scenery and tranquility of the area. Jenny Creek Trailhead

The Jenny Creek Trail begins at the Jenny Creek Trailhead just outside of Eldora Mountain Resort’s private parking lot. The first mile is only open during the Eldora Mountain Resort’s operating season in winter. The trail intersects Guinn Mountain Winter Trail, which splits off to the Colorado Mountain Club’s Arestua Hut and ultimately reaches Yankee Doodle Lake on the Rollins Pass Road. Mud Lake & Caribou Ranch Open Space

Good beginning snowshoe trails are found at Mud Lake Open Space park north of Nederland on C.R. 126. There are two short loop trails and an out-andback Caribou Ranch Link. Further up the road, in the shadow of the Continental Divide, the 2,151 acres of Caribou Ranch Open Space offer a variety of landscapes to explore including forests, meadows, wetlands and the historical Blue Bird mining complex.

Brainard Lake Recreation Area

The Brainard Lake Recreation Area is one of most popular destinations in the Boulder Ranger District. Fees are not charged during the winter operating season and parking is at the Brainard Gateway Parking Lot to access trails. Several dedicated snowshoe trails and a road closed to vehicular traffic in winter lead to peaceful Brainard Lake. Follow

snowshoe signs on trees to stay on snowshoe-only trails in this crisscrossed area. Numerous other trails suitable for snowshoes and winter hiking cover the area while even more begin at Brainard Lake and head into the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area to destinations including Long, Isabelle, Mitchell and Blue lakes. Sourdough Trail

The Sourdough Trail is a long-distance trail with multiple access points that facilitate moderate outand-back trips, end-to-end shuttle trips and multiple side-loop opportunities. It intersects Little Raven, South Saint Vrain, Beaver Reservoir Cutoff and Buchanan Pass trails. The entire Sourdough Trail runs 12.5 miles, so it is popular to take on either the north or south section from the Red Rock Lake Trailhead at Brainard Lake, which is the trail’s high point. Other access points includes Beaver Reservoir Road Trailhead and at Peaceful Valley, 5.8 miles north of the Brainard Lake Road. Parking is at the intersection to Camp Dick Road, which is unplowed in winter.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park offers 355 miles of trails to suit any fitness and experience level.

Winter is a spectacular time to visit the park. Most park trails can be explored with snowshoes. Just 3.5 miles round-trip, the trail to Emerald Lake is easy-to-moderate offering awesome panoramas of Nymph, Dream and Emerald lakes, along with a few frozen waterfalls. Stop at any visitor center to get the latest snow and avalanche conditions and discuss the best path for your needs with the rangers.

The National Park offers a free “Winter Snowshoe Exploration” event on Sundays and Fridays through March 22, 12:30 p.m., and a “Beginner Snowshoe” on Fridays through Feb. 28.
