Consider making blood donation in Janaury

FRONT RANGE January is National Blood Donor Month, declared by President Richard Nixon in 1970, to pay tribute to voluntary blood donors and increase donation by others. Blood donations typically drop off during and immediately after the winter holidays, which makes Blood Donor Month a critical time for the American Red Cross. Busy schedules, holiday breaks from school, inclement weather and

Page 2

MMAC monthly

winter illnesses contribute to fewer blood and platelet donations. Since December, severe winter weather has forced the Red Cross to cancel dozens of blood drives, leaving hundreds of donations uncollected. This poses quite a challenge since the need for blood doesn’t take a holiday nor diminish because a snowstorm hits. The Red Cross needs to collect more than 13,000 donations every day to keep the blood supply ready and

| JANUARY 2019

available to meet the needs of about 2,600 hospitals, clinics and cancer centers across the country. Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, less than 10 percent actually do. The Red Cross, which provides about 40 percent of blood in the U.S., hopes to change that. The organization is seeking new donors in the new year to step up to help meet the needs of patients battling cancer and other conditions or disorders, individuals undergoing surgery and victims of accidents or violent acts such as last year’s mass shootings. Eligible blood and platelet donors are urged to schedule a donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800733-2767). Help even more people by inviting your sister, daughter or other family members, friends and colleagues to donate too. Why donate blood: • Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells and 7,000 units of platelets are needed every day in the U.S. • Type O is the blood type most often requested by hospitals. Type O negative blood (red cells) can be transfused to patients of all blood types. It’s always in great demand and often in short supply. Only 7 percent of people in the U.S. have type O negative blood. • AB positive blood donors are universal donors of plasma. Only 3 percent of people in the U.S. have AB positive blood. • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. • Approximately 6.8 million individuals donate blood in the U.S. annually. Although an estimated 38 percent of the population is eligible, less than 10 percent actually donate. • Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation, and refreshments. • Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded. • The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 minutes. • A single donation can potentially help more than one patient. • Most donated red blood cells must be used within 42 days of collection.

Backcountry camping fees increase at park ESTES PARK Effective for the 2019 summer season, the cost of obtaining a permit for backcountry camping in Rocky Mountain National Park will increase from $26 to $30 per trip. This administrative permit fee, established in 1995, was last increased to $26 in 2015. Permits for backcountry camping are an integral part of a program that rations and distributes use throughout the park’s backcountry. Permits are intended to help provide a quality expewww.mmacmonthly.com

rience, minimize impacts to resources, and ensure that sites are available for those who plan ahead and reserve a permit in advance. While an overnight permit is required for backcountry camping year-round, the fee for obtaining the permit only applies for camping that occurs May-October when demand typically exceeds availability in the park’s backcountry. The four dollar increase for the non-refundable permit becomes effective March 1. Different from an entrance fee or

fee for camping in a developed campground, the backcountry permit is based on cost recovery and all funds are applied directly to the costs of administering the program. In addition to providing the opportunity to reserve and secure campsites in advance, funds recovered through the permit fee allow for staff to provide trip planning advice and information for a safe and enjoyable trip. For more information, visit nps. gov/romo or call 970-586-1206.

hen the Earls of Leicester was formed by bluegrass legend Jerry Douglas in 2013, its mission was ambitious but exact: to preserve and promote the legacy of bluegrass legends Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, in hopes of reviving the duo’s music for longtime admirers and introducing a new generation to their genre-defining sound. Within a year of releasing its self-titled debut, the Nashville-based six-piece far surpassed its members’ own expectations, winning a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and earning six awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. The Earls of Leicester demonstrate “the pure joy and supreme musicianship that propel their every performance,” at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Dr. in Nederland, Jan. 12, 9 p.m. with 300 Days. Tickets are $35. “Our goal is to go out and reacquaint everybody with the music of Flatt and Scruggs just the way they did it, which means fewer microphones and a good amount of choreography,” Dobro player Jerry Douglas said. “We’re trying to put as much as we can into the music before it even reaches the speakers.” The band wholeheartedly channels the spirit of Flatt and Scruggs while allowing each member’s “distinct charm and singular musicality” to shine through. And though their “unbridled passion instantly stirs up a freewheeling energy,” a closer listen reveals the “profound mastery of skill” infused into each performance. “This is the result of years and years of trying out different instruments, different string gauges, different techniques to try to create these sounds,” Douglas notes. In that process, band members dug up decades-old instruments to achieve the ideal texture and tone they were seeking. “Everybody in the band plays something old,” says Douglas. “This music just sounds so much more true to form when it’s played on old instruments.” The most crucial factor in forming the Earls of Leicester was replicating the “lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry” that fueled Flatt and Scruggs. “I looked for years to find the group I needed for the alchemy to work,” Douglas said. In the end, he landed on the lineup of Shawn Camp of Garth Brooks and Blake Shelton bands; Jeff White of Vince Gill and Loretta Lynn bands; Charlie Cushman of Jimmy Martin and Mel Tillis bands; Johnny Warren, son of Foggy Mountain Boys’ Paul Warren; and Barry Bales of Alison Krauss & Union Station—and found himself beyond floored by their immediate synergy. “I’d hoped it was going to be even half that good, and it ended up just taking my breath away.” Visit earlsofleicester.net and thecaribouroom.com to learn more and check out the band’s latest live album release.

B

oulder-based acoustic trio 300 Days exploded onto the Front Range bluegrass scene in 2016 with its fiery, original tunes, handcrafted by a trio of well-seasoned musicians who combine their background in bluegrass, folk, rock, jazz and Americana into a dynamic sound boasting sharp instrumental prowess, impressive vocal harmonies & a host of original material they call “prograss.” Melissa McGinley, known for her work with the duo, StereoFidelics, provides “powerful, take-no-prisoners” vocals and “gravity-defying” fiddle work. Nick Dunbar, a former member and founder of bluegrass jam-band Mountain Standard Time, adds “finely-honed” songwriting, mandolin and guitar to the mix. Jazz-trained Dave “Pump” Solzberg formerly of the funky Fox Street All Stars, rounds out the sound with tight rhythms on the upright bass. For such a new group, 300 Days boasts the instrumental prowess, vocal harmonies and original material of a well-seasoned band. The first full-length album from 300 Days, Easy Gettin’ Old, includes 11 tracks and was recorded this past summer and released at a sold-out show, Nov. 2, at the Gold Hill Inn. It was recorded live near Ward in a small, home-based studio with limited re-takes or post-production alterations and mastered in Boulder by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering. It’s available on CD and vinyl as well as a digital download and streaming at Spotify, Apple Music and more. The band also has a self-titled EP available for online streaming and new merchandise for sale on its website. Get creative with clay

T

GILPIN COUNTY he Gilpin Clay Studio at the Gilpin County Community Center, 250 Norton Dr., offers a friendly atmosphere, mutual inspiration, high level of education and the freedom to use it with its “drop in,” open studio time. Steve Briggs, a self titled “artist-potter,” heads the studio where he teaches along with Gabrelle Gewirtz. Together they encourage all inspiring “mud babies” to try their hand at throwing clay. New, eight-week winter pottery classes take place, 9:30 a.m.-noon, on Wednesdays, Jan. 23-March 13, and Saturdays, Jan. 26-March 16. Briggs and Gewirtz have similar styles of teaching preferring to let a students’ creativity emerge naturally. “Everybody has their own style, we just try to teach people techniques and then they can find their own voice. That’s what’s so wonderful,” Gewirtz said. “Steve and I are very much into our students experimenting, figuring it out and just learning to work the clay.” First timers benefit from the years of education brought to the Clay Studio classes. Occasionally a special session will be offered where students can learn more about a particular style, technique or process. Using their extensive experiences with clay, Briggs and Gewirtz give students a deeper understanding of pottery. “Due to our backgrounds, [Steve and I] get a little nerdy when we start talking about clay, but it can be a great advantage to the [students] because it’s more than they will get at a ‘paint-

a-pot’ place, but it’s less intense than if they were to take a college class,” Gewirtz said. “We try to get the students involved in learning more about the working of ceramics than just doing it and give them some of the technical background about clay instead of just saying, ‘make something.’” Gewirtz says the studio is a place to get causal yet, in-depth, instruction in a relaxed, friendly, community environment. “This is a place where you are going to learn about how to work a medium and you will learn it from nuts to bolts,” she said. “It’s a place that you walk in a little trepidatiously, and then you find a family.” In the winter session, taught by Briggs, students with clay experience will start out making the pieces that are easiest for them, the ones made with some ease and facility. Beginning students will learn simple techniques to also make some nice clay pots and try to stretch them out in a different direction. Participants will also make glaze experiments using test tiles and the pieces made by students using methods comfortable to them to discover new combinations and, maybe, beautiful glazes. The pottery session is $120 for residents and $140 for non-residents. Fees include class instruction, glazes, firings and extra studio time. Clay costs $10 for 25 pounds of new clay or $5 for 25 pounds of recycled clay. To learn more or sign up for a pottery session, visit gilpinrecreation.com or call 303-582-1453.
