Recognize ‘ongoing persistence’ of women entire year
FRONT RANGE In 1987 the U.S. Congress designated March as National Women’s History Month. This creates a special opportunity in our schools, our workplaces, and our communities to recognize and celebrate the often-overlooked achievements of American women. Each year there is a special theme and women whose lives exemplify that theme are selected as National Honorees. This year, the theme is “Nevertheless She Persisted: Honor-
ing Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.” The 2018 theme presents an opportunity to honor women who have shaped America’s history and its future through their tireless commitment to ending discrimination against women and girls. The theme embodies women working together with strength, tenacity and courage to overcome obstacles and achieve joyful accomplishments. Through this theme we can celebrate women fighting not only against
sexism, but also against the many intersecting forms of discrimination faced by American women including discrimination based on race and ethnicity, class, disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, and many other categories. During the month, take the time to recognize the ongoing persistence of our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, neighbors and friends. Join us in celebrating all women this month and throughout the year.

Seasonal restrictions issued for Boulder Canyon BOULDER COUNTY To protect nesting golden eagles, the U.S. Forest Service has implemented restrictions in Boulder Canyon beginning in February. The restricted areas include popular rock climbing spots at Eagle Rock, Blob Rock, Bitty Buttress and Security Risk in Boulder Canyon. These areas are located along Highway 119, approximately 1.5 miles east of Boulder Falls. Effective through July 31, the closures protect a long-established golden eagle nesting territowww.mmacmonthly.com
ry. Happy Hour, Bihedral and Riviera will remain open as long as visitors stay out of the closed areas. “These restrictions allow the birds to choose a nest site without human disturbance,” said Boulder District Ranger Angela Gee. “The chosen site remains closed to the public until the eagles fledge in late July, but we typically reopen other parts of the area earlier.” The Boulder Ranger District partners with the Boulder Climbing Com-
munity and the Access Fund to monitor nesting progress and to inform climbers about the importance of giving the eagles space to raise their young. Federal and state laws prohibit disturbing any nesting bird of prey. Visitors can help protect wildlife by respecting all closures. Signs will be posted at key access points into the closed areas. Information about the eagle nesting restrictions will be available online at local climbing websites and at www. fs.usda.gov/goto/arp/eagles.

Roosevelt Collier
Collier returns to ‘get down’ with fresh line-up NEDERLAND A transcendent talent on pedal and lap steel guitars—and so proficient, he’s affectionately known as “The Dr.”—Roosevelt Collier plays potent mix of blues, gospel, rock and, in his words, “dirty funk swampy grime.” The musician, who has performed at the past two NedFest Music Festivals, returns to town with a new version of his “Colorado Get Down” band, March 31, at The Caribou Room. Vince Herman and Andy Thorn from Leftover Salmon, Andy Hall of The Infamous Stringdusters, Joel Searls of Genetics and Neal Evans from Dopapod will join Collier on stage. Dandu opens the show. Soft-spoken by nature, south Florida-bred Roosevelt Collier does his hollering on the sacred steel guitar. Brought up in the tradition of the House of God Church, Roosevelt built his reputation alongside his uncles and cousins in The Lee Boys, known for their spirited, soul-shaking live performances. Seated front and center, “The Dr.” leaves an indelible mark on listeners, flooring audiences with his lightning-fast slide work on the pedal steel. At festivals, he is a regular “Artist at Large,” performing alongside many of music’s most prestigious acts, from The Allman Brothers, to the Funky Meters, to Los Lobos to the Del McCoury Band. Whether on tour with the Lee Boys, bouncing from stage to stage at festivals, or hosting an all-star get down in Colorado, when Roosevelt takes the stage, the ear-to-ear grins can’t help but be contagious. Dandu’s music is inspired by jazz, hip-hop, downtempo, and funk which results in a sound that can be described as “wonky groove music.” Doors open at for dinner at 7:30 p.m. and the show begins at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 in advance or $18 at the door. Ticketing fees are not included. Collier also performs with the same line-up at Mile High Spirits in Denver, March 29; Ullr’s Tavern in Winter Park, March 30. Frisco Funk Collective
Summit County act features funk, jazz ROLLINSVILLE/EVERGREEN
The Frisco Funk Collective, which has been high-energy jazz, funk and dance tunes all over Summit County and Colorado since 2015. The band comes to the Front Range for a two-set show, March 10, at the Stage Stop, 60 Main St. in RollinsFUNK/ ville as part of Frozen Dead JAZZ Guy Days. The act also performs March 22 at the Little Bear, 28075 Hwy. 74 in Evergreen, along with several shows in Summit County throughout the month. The idea of the band is to feature the best of each instrument while “digging deep into charts” of the new-funk movement. Members are influenced by ’70s fusion-era artists Weather Report and Return to Forever as well as modern acts Lettuce and Daft Punk. The Frisco Funk Collective is lead by bass player Tyler Easton and features Eric James on guitar, Drew Gorin on saxophone, Adam Weidner on percussion and keys, and Leo Lopez on drums. The spirit of the band also allows for a rotating cast of guest musicians. Visit friscofunk.com for additional information and tour details.
back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds, The Animals, Cream and The Rolling Stones as well as Southern rockers like The Allman Brothers. One night he and a friend were listening to records when his friend’s older brother told them if they liked blues, they BLUES should really be listening to B.B. King. As luck would have it, King was in town for a week, and the upcoming Saturday afternoon show was just for teenagers. Ellis and his friend went, sitting transfixed in the front row. When B.B. broke a string on Lucille, he changed it without missing a beat, and handed the broken string to Ellis. After the show, B.B. came out and talked with fans, mesmerizing Ellis with his warmth and kindness. Ellis’ fate was now sealed; he had to become a blues guitarist. He saw Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and every other blues artist who came through town, always sitting up front, always waiting to meet the artists, take photos, get autographs. And yes, he still has King’s string. Already an accomplished teenaged musician, Ellis left Florida and returned to Atlanta in 1975. He soon joined a gritty local blues band, the Alley Cats. In 1981, along with veteran blues singer and harpist Chicago Bob Nelson, Tinsley formed The Heartfixers, a group that would become Atlanta’s top-drawing blues band. After cutting a few Heartfixers albums, Ellis was ready to head out on his own. His first Alligator Records release hit the public by surprise in 1988. Critics and fans quickly agreed that a new and original guitar hero had emerged. The Chicago Tribune said, “Tinsley Ellis torches with molten fretwork. Ellis takes classic, Southern blues-rock workouts and jolts them to new life with a torrid ax barrage.” Ellis’ next four releases further grew his fan base and his fame. Features and reviews ran in Rolling Stone, The Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The
Boston Globe and in many other national and regional publications. Guests including Peter Buck of R.E.M., guitarist Derek Trucks—who made his recording debut with Tinsley at age 14—and keyboardist Chuck Leavell of The Rolling Stones have joined him in the studio. Ellis’ song “A Quitter Never Wins” was recorded by Jonny Lang, selling over a million copies. He in turn has made appearances on albums by The Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, Col. Bruce Hampton and others. Producers Eddy Offord (John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Yes) and the legendary Tom Dowd (The Allman Brothers, Ray Charles) helped hone his studio sound. Whether he’s on stage with his own band or jamming with artists like Buddy Guy, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gov’t Mule or Widespread Panic, he always plays with “grit, soul and unbridled passion.” His latest album, Winning Hand, was released on Alligator Records in January. The critically-acclaimed release debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Magazine blues chart and features some of Ellis’ “most rockin’ blues tunes yet.” Recorded in Nashville, the album includes nine originals, ranging from blistering blues to heart-pounding rock to soulful ballads and Leon Russell’s “Dixie Lullaby.” These are Ellis’ only Front Range performances other than a night at Swallow Hill in Denver, March 11. He also plays Basalt, March 8, and Crested Butte, March 12. The Mile High Room at the Grand Z Casino in Central City is a more than 300-person “Las-Vegas-style lounge” featuring a million-dollar audio system. The unique room includes a sunken stage, dance floor, private bar, three levels of seating and a special VIP area. Other upcoming free shows in the Mile High Room include Jewel and the Rough, March 16-17; Walker Williams, March 23-24; and New Family Dog, March 30-31. NOTEWORTHY Mark Rashid & Brad Fitch - Making Good Time
B
rad Fitch and Mark Rashid introduce their new album, Making Good Time, when they perform together at Marys Lake Lodge’s Tavern 1929, 2625 Marys Lake Road in Estes Park, March 16 at 6 p.m. The duo will be accompanied by Eamonn Morris, who played cello and bass on the album. The event is free and open to the public. “We welcome everyone to come hear our new songs and celebrate with us on,” Fitch said. Fitch, known for his tributes to John Denver and summertime campfire sing-a longs in Estes Park, and Rashid, an internationally acclaimed horse trainer, have performed together since the mid-1990s when they were in the popular Estes Park act The Elktones. “Of the many music groups I’ve been part of, Mark’s the one with whom I have performed the most,” Fitch said. The album is dedicated to the memory of their former band mate, the late Dick Orleans. His songs “One More Fallen Angel,” which he co-wrote with Birgit Bismark, and “Live Out Our Dreams” are included on the recording. Although most of the rest of the tracks are written by either Fitch or Rashid, or both together, there are also compositions by John Denver and Steven Walters. “For a long time now, Brad and I have been threatening to do a CD project together,” Rashid said. “It only took about 25 years. It’s a record that we’re really proud of and look forward to sharing with all of you. Making Good Time features new original music from Fitch and Rashid, along with a couple of their favorite cover songs. Making Good Time will be available for purchase at the album release party. Fitch has recorded 20 albums featuring his original music that reflects what he loves about nature and the western lifestyle, while Rashid’s Song of the Prairie features his solo work. Searching for a ‘greater goodness’ with art Artist finds inspiration in nature, tattoos
W
By Jeffrey V. Smith ESTES PARK/NEDERLAND ade Johnson is sometimes an artist, sometimes an illustrator, sometimes a brewer and sometimes a “purveyor of righteousness,” but he’s always creative. The co-owner of Lumpy Ridge Brewing in Estes Park, showcases his artistic side—which includes psychedelic posters, beer labels, spirit animal designs, murals and more—as “The Art of Wade.” A collection of recent work will be on display at James Peak Brewery & Smokehouse, 70 E 1st St. in Nederland, through March. An opening night celebration, March 1, features live music by Chain Station’s Jon Pickett and Lumpy Ridge beer. Some of Johnson’s style and inspiration, which he describes as “cosmic doodles and the search for greater goodness,” is derived from his work as a geologist and tattoo artist. The mountains and wildlife of Colorado has also provide endless inspiration. “I am living and playing out my childhood dreams in real time,” he said. The artist’s work can also be seen on posters promoting numerous Estes Park events as well as Yonder Mountain String Band, including its 2016 Red Rocks performance. All of Lumpy Ridge Brewery’s bottle labels, event posters and walls feature his work, too. Johnson didn’t set out to be an artist. He actually began his professional career as a geologist in his home state of Virginia, but before long, sold his belongings and headed to Maui to work on a permaculture farm. Once in Hawaii, he began cultivating his “childhood dream” of being an artist. In an effort to “make something of himself,” Johnson made the decision to return to the mainland, and head to Colorado. Once he was in the mountains of Colorado, Johnson’s art career began to grow. He started hanging his art at mountain coffee shops and restaurants then landed a show at a small salon gallery space. The salon show somehow led to an “exhilarating” career in the tattoo industry that lasted nearly eight years. Feeling the need for a change once again, Johnson returned to the up-country of Maui to work on his art and cultivate his goal of being an artist.

Film festival celebrates trailblazers LYONS The 4th Annual Lyons Film Festival is a film-filled three
days celebrating trailblazers, rebels and survivors, March 2325. Films showcasing “true grit and the indomitable human spirit” including the event’s feature films, Strad Style and Canus Lupus Colorado, are highlighted. All films are screened at Rogers Hall, 408 High St. Passes FILM for the entire event are $45. Tickets to individual, two-hour film blocks are $12 and workshops are $5 each. Strad Style tells the remarkable story about a backwoods dreamer, living in rural Ohio with an unlikely obsession for Stradivari and all things violin, who convinces a famous European concert violinist that he can make a copy of one of the most famous and valuable violins in the world. Canus Lupus Colorado is the story of the past, present, and future of Colorado’s now extinct native wolf population. It unfolds through the eyes of Mike Phillips, the world’s foremost expert on wolf restoration, John Emerick, an ecologist and author in Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as photojournalist Morgan Heim, elk hunter David Gann, and lifelong rancher Duke Phillips. Together, these perspectives paint a sweeping portrait of the complex relationships between people and predators in the modern West. The festival begins Friday with a launch party at Pizza Bar 66 followed by a documentaries by Sally Van Meter, which confronts homelessness in Denver, and Jem Moore, which showcases gun control issues with youth. Family-friendly films, including Canus Lupus Colorado and action-packed, visually-amazing outdoor adventure films, are showcased Saturday. A variety of workshops are also scheduled between film blocks. The Saturday evening program includes, I Like Me - Self Proclaimed Guru, which highlights an egocentric free spirit who hits rock bottom, but finds unexpected success as a self-empowerment guru. An after-party follows at Oskar Blues Grill & Brew, 303 Main St. Sunday’s schedule includes an additional workshop and two blocks of films about trailblazers like Tyler Dunning, who travels to all 59 U.S. National Parks after his friend passes away in a terror-related bombing in Uganda, and a young girl from Wisconsin who receives a handmade card from a stranger every day for two and half years. Sunday ends with an awards celebration at Oskar Blues. Visit lyonsfilmfestival.com for complete festival information and links to purchase tickets or e-mail jake@coloradofests.com with questions.

LOCAL AUTHORS Jane Parnell - Off Trail: Finding My Way Home in the Colorado Rockies

nly one person believed Jane Parnell when she reported being raped at 21: the mountain man who first led her up one peak after another in the Colorado Rockies and who then became her husband. Parnell took to mountaineering in the Rocky Mountains as a means to overcome her family’s history of mental illness and the trauma of the rape. By age 30 she became the first woman to climb the 100 highest peaks of the state. But regaining her footing could not save her by-now-failing marriage. Unprepared emotionally and financially for singlehood, she kept climbing—the 200 highest peaks, then nearly all of the 300 highest. The mountains were the one anchor in her life that held. Finding few contemporary role models to validate her ambition, Parnell looked to the past for inspiration—to English travel writer Isabella Bird, who also sought refuge and transformation in the Colorado Rockies, notably by climbing Longs Peak in 1873 with the notorious mountain man Rocky Mountain Jim. Reading Bird’s now-classic A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains emboldened Parnell to keep moving forward. She was not alone in her drive for independence. Parnell’s memoir spans half a century. Her personal journey dramatizes evolving gender roles from the 1950s to the present. As a child, she witnessed the first ascent of the Diamond on Longs Peak, the “Holy Grail” of alpine climbing in the Rockies. In 2002, she saw first hand the catastrophic Colorado wildfires of climate change, and five years later, she nearly lost her leg in a climbing accident. In the tradition of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild and Tracy Ross’s The Source of All Things, Parnell’s mountaineering memoir shows us how, by pushing ourselves to the limits of our physical endurance and by confronting our deepest fears, we can become whole again. The book is now available from University of Oklahoma Press at www.oupress.com, on Amazon.com and bookstores like at Macdonald Book Shop, 152 E. Elkhorn Ave. in Estes Park.

A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat (above) and Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci at The Louvre museum (left) will be discussed in upcoming, free classes at the Art Center of Estes Park in March and April.
Free classes continue ‘art exploration’ ESTES PARK The Art Center of Estes Park hosts the final pair of its free, art class series in March and April. Learn about “The Louvre in Paris,” March 3, and “Great Masterpieces of Art & Architecture Throughout History,” April 7. Both classes, led ART CLASS by Chuck Benson—an art and architectural historian, architectural designer and “traveler in search of beauty and wonder”—begin at 7 p.m. and require registration. Continue the season’s “journey of art exploration,” March 3, with the highlights and “partial unraveling” of the mysteries and timeless masterpieces contained within The Louvre. Discover the world-renowned museum’s treasures of the ancient and modern world. From Egypt to Leonardo de Vinci and Michelangelo to the glory of
France—captured in masterworks by David, Delacroix, Ingres, Gericault and others—along with impressionists including Monet will be discussed. The final presentation of the season “Great Masterpieces of Art & Architecture,” April 7, explores the “accepted and iconic” works of art and architecture while delving into the reasons why people “blindly accept” iconic works as “gospel to greatness” when others haven’t been given enough consideration.” The class will also examine Benson’s “alternative list” of masterpieces. To register, contact the Art Center by phone, drop by in person or use the online registration form. The Art Center, 517 Big Thompson Ave., is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Monday until May 15 when it opens daily. Call 970-586-5882 or e-mail info@artcenterofestes.com with questions or visit artcenterofestes.com to learn more.
Artist fulfilling childhood ‘dream’ Continued from page 10
Ultimately, Johnson again returned to Colorado and Estes Park, where he added a career in the craft brewing industry to his endeavors. According to his partner at Lumpy Ridge, Nick Smith, the artist made their brewery his canvas. “It was his dream to use a garage as a canvas, “ he explained. “Since my drawing skills maxed out in 3rd grade, he is a serendipitous part of the program. Wade gave this place a soul and style that is truly unique and truly ours. There is art everywhere and it is ever stimulating and fun. Especially when I find new things I had no idea he added. Wade goes where the spirit takes him and allowing that to happen has given us a very cool little joint. If you like what you see you can take some home with you.” The artist is available for commissions and promotional posters, logos and more. Check out more of Wade’s work at theartofwade.com or find him on Facebook at @theartofwadecolorado or instagram at @theartofwade.

COVER STORY
Active Indoors Recreation, community centers offer indoor alternative for staying mentally and physically fit FRONT RANGE e live in a part of the country many people envy for its abundance and variety of outdoor recreation opportunities. The trails are extensive, skiing abundant, and the accessibility and amount of public lands can be overwhelming. Sometimes, however, it’s the indoor spaces that matter most to a community, especially when it comes to staying active, fit and social. When “winter” can last up to half a year, it is important to have indoor spaces to utilize for both physical exercise and intellectual stimulation. In the northern Colorado Front Range mountains, most communities have found a way to create these spaces. Clear Creek County is served by the newly renovated Clear Creek Recreation Center and pool in Idaho Springs; Gilpin County has the 43,000 square foot Gilpin County Community Center with pools and recreation facilities; Nederland residents can utilize the Nederland Community Center’s meeting rooms, gym and The Fitness Place facility; and Estes Park now has a 70,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Estes Valley Community Center with multiple pools, gym and more. Additionally, other indoor public buildings like the Georgetown Community Center, Golden Gate Grange, Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association Hall, The Old Gallery in Allenspark, Walt Self Building in Lyons and others provide a place for localized fitness classes, even if they don’t have their own recreation or fitness amenities. The Clear Creek Recreation Center offers a full range of adult and youth fitness, athletic and aquatic programs at its facility. A $7.8 million property tax increase funded the renovations of the building and its 3,400 square foot lap pool. A recreation pool and spa were added along with meeting space, indoor track and broad range of fitness equipment. “Our Recreation Center provides identity for citizens and is a major factor in the perception of quality of life in our community,” Clear Creek Recreation Manager Laura Allen said. “It provides a number of physical health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, reducing arthritis pain, weight loss and lowered risk of diabetes, certain cancers, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Recreating also lowers stress and depression. Mental wellness is an important part of your overall health and can impact your physical well-being.” The Gilpin County Community Center doubles as the county’s recreation center and has a large lap pool, recreation pool and gym along with fitness equipment, weight and dance rooms, meeting space and more. A full program of wide ranging fitness and aquatics classes are offered. “The Gilpin County Community Center provides county residents and surrounding mountain community members with a common destination where people of all ages can

participate in a variety of fitness, athletic, youth and arts programs and social and cultural events,” Interim Director of Gilpin County Parks and Recreation Alan Smith said. “We serve and support our local youth, families, senior citizens, civic organizations and businesses. Community centers help to create a stable and vibrant community by providing safe, well-equipped facilities for everything from physical activities like Pilates, yoga, martial arts, dance, swimming and basketball to community meetings, holiday fairs, and special events for our local fire department.” In Allenspark there is no recreation center, but The Old Gallery serves as its community center and offers a place for yoga, exercise and other classes. It is no less important to its residents. “For residents living in a rural area, a community center is imperative to provide opportunities for making connections, finding support and opportunities for entertainment, educations and camaraderie,” Advisory Board member Holly Bea-Weaver said. “The Old Gallery is unique in that it truly reflects the likes, dislikes, needs and talents of the community. Since we are 100 percent volunteer-driven, our programming is the result of individuals deciding to put on an event.” The new Estes Valley Community Center, which has its Grand Opening March 3, began serving residents, Feb. 28. The center is a comprehensive, multi-generational destination with a robust schedule of classes, a multipurpose gymnasium, free indoor walking and jogging track, lazy river with interactive play features and slide in a natatorium, group fitness facilities, large community room with commercial kitchen, golf simulator, senior services and drop-in childcare. “A community center creates a hub for activity within a community,” Estes Valley Recreation & Park District Communications Manager Dawn Wilson said. “Staying active during the winter months is important to stay toned and ready to get back into sports and outdoor activities when the warmer weather returns. Staying involved in programs and classes in a community center also helps people socialize during the winter months when our bodies and minds might want to retreat to a quiet life at home under a blanket and eating comfort food. An active lifestyle in the winter can also help boost a person’s immune system by keeping your blood flowing and circulating those immune cells.”
