FRONT RANGE During the busy gift-buying season that begins this month, be sure to spend time shopping in your community and supporting local businesses, especially on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24.

Many benefits come from staying local and shopping small.

Money spent in the community will go back into it in the form of creating employment opportunities. According to the Small Business Administration, the 28 million small businesses in America account for 54 percent of all sales in the U.S. Plus, small businesses have provided 55 percent of all jobs and 66 percent of all new jobs since the 1970s. When you make a purchase

at a small business, you are doing your part to stimulate the local economy.

Shopping at small businesses helps keep money within the neighborhood.

A series of studies by the research firm Civic Economics found 48 percent of purchases at local independent businesses go back into the community compared to less than 14 percent of sales made at chain stores.

By shopping at a business in the neighborhood, you’ll most likely stop by other independent retailers in the vicinity. You can also get away from the mass-produced items found at big box chains by shopping at an independent retailer which offer locally-made gifts and products.

Applicants must also have ongoing weekday availability and commit to help lead at least six programs in 2019.

Previous experience is not necessary – only a desire to share nature with others!

Training classes will take place on Thursdays, Jan. 10 through March 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Longmont.

Applications are also being accepted for Volunteer Ranger Corps members through Nov. 16. Volunteers must be at least 18 or older.

Music Perfectly Peachy Performance Electric Toast

he members of Nederland-based bands Electric Toast and Smooth Money Gesture are teaming up at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Dr. in Nederland, Dec. 1 at 9 p.m. for an evening of original music and special tribute to The Allman Brothers Band. Tickets are $10. Under 21 guests are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The evening kicks off with an increasingly rare performance by Smooth Money Gesture, which plays a set of original music. The quartet’s sound is rooted in rock and roll with elements of funk, bluegrass, metal, and electronica producing a jam based high energy psychedelic creation all their own. At the core of the band are the Diminico brothers. Doug Diminico plays guitar and sings alongside his brother Dan who plays bass guitar and sings. Pete Goldberg adds his energetic keyboard playing and gritty vocals and Scott Llewellyn on drums and vocals keeps the band driving while adding some “polyrhythmic flare.”

The music continues with Electric Toast, a dynamic four-piece band comprised of members from The Malai Llama, the Pine Dwellers and Smooth Money Gesture. Members of the band include Benjamin Sproul on guitar and vocals, Dan Perez on bass and vocals, Pete Goldberg on keyboards and vocals, and Chris Cornwall on drums. The band, known for its high-energy live performances of rock with soul and “funky Americana,” will also perform an original set.

A third set will include both bands playing together and covering The Allman Brothers Band classic third album Eat A Peach album in its entirety. The album contains the extended half-hour-long Mountain Jam, vocalist Gregg Allman’s performance of his brother’s favorite song, Melissa, plus Dickey Betts’ Blue Sky, which went on to become a classic rock radio staple. Other tracks include Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More, Les Brers in A Minor, One Way Out, Trouble No More by Muddy Waters, Stand Back and Little Martha.

From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. It started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who became his mentor and taught him the secrets of “icy hot” blues guitar.

Boulder band ‘captivates’ audiences

BOULDER/GOLD HILL Boulder’s Foxfeather is a “sultry” alt-americana band that has become a local staple in venues across the Front Range and tours nationally. The act performs at the Fox Theater, 1135 13th St. in Boulder on Nov. 10 with Augustus and the Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main St., Nov. 30 at 9 p.m. Additionally, Foxfeather Duo plays at the Tasty Weasel, 1800 Pike Road in Longmont, Nov. 18.

Beginning with a lyrical base, and bolstered by strong blues-rock instrumentals, FoxfeathBLUESer’s unique sound easily captivates its audiences. The band features Carly Ricks Smith on ROCK lead vocals and Laura Paige Stratton on acoustic and electric guitars, keys and vocals. They are often supported by various instrumentalists for a full rock sound.

Concert supports music school LYONS

The 16th season of High Street Concerts continues with The November Project fundrasier concert, which organizers call “a night to remember,” Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. at Rogers Hall, 408 High St. The event is a three-act performance feaFUNDturing “incredible” music with RAISER proceeds going to a “very worthy and joyful cause. “ The Michele Castro Trio, The 89s and Samba Tonk each perform.

The evening begins with Michele Castro who was born in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, in the Rocinha favela. There, she discovered a passion for music and learned that “friendship is like oxygen and family is forever.” The singer, composer and instrumentalist has studied music since she was 12 years old, starting on flute at the Escola de Música in Rocinha, which is also the beneficiary of the concert. She began to compose at 16 years old, soon after learning how to play the guitar.

The show continues with Lyons-based The 89s, a rock and Americana trio with Eben Grace on guitar, Brian Schey on bass and Michael Thompson on drums. All three sing. Eben writes the songs, which range from Elvis Costello style crafted pop, to Son Volt country tinged grit.

All three members are seasoned session and touring players who now keep their gigs a little closer to home. The 89s deliver a open hearted show with catchy songs and smart playing.

Closing the night is Samba Tonk featuring Kate Little, Ian Brighton, Eric Yates of Hot Buttered Rum, Raoul Rossiter and many special guests. Samba Tonk is a musical project that combines elements of Americana, Country, Bluegrass, and Samba. To date it has involved collaborations with members of Samba Dende, Ginga, Bonnie and the Clydes, and Taarka.

Music School Rochina is the beneficiary of the concert. Proceeds raised will help children of the favela of Rochina obtain musical instruments and attend lessons and classes.

John Adam Smith is a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist who plays acoustic roots-driven, soul music and blends elements of blues, funk, rock, folk and reggae. He weaves intricate acoustic arrangements, punctuated by open tunings and the captivating sound of his lap steel guitar.

NOTEWORTHY The Jauntee - Always Never Knowing

C

olorado-based psychedelic-jazz-blues-funk band The Jauntee released its latest album, Always Never Knowing, in September and celebrated at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver and The Caribou Room in Nederland in October. It was recorded in front of a live audience in Cambridge, MA at The Bridge Sound & Stage, in July 2017.

The album is a “quintessential selection of live works” from the two-night-run in the band member’s hometown. It features 16 tracks that were professionally recorded, mixed, and mastered by sound engineer Alex Allinson. Tom Waltz also did some mastering. It showcases the band’s masterful playing and inspiring ability to take its original music and create something unique night after night. It also features nine previously unreleased tracks that have quickly become staples of the band’s live show. Experience the act in its purest element, pushing the boundaries of their sound while sharing that trip with their fans. Capturing ‘Essence’ of Animals Photographer’s images portray connection to wildlife

T

he Art Center of Estes Park showcases the work of Allenspark resident Weldon Lee, one of America’s top wildlife photographers, Nov. 16-Dec. 23. His show, “Family Portraits: My Wild Brothers & Sisters,” includes an opening night reception with the artist, Nov. 16, 5-7 p.m., complete with hors d’oeuvres and beverages. A selection of images from Mr. Lee’s “Mystic World” series, along with his latest creations and a few older favorites are featured.

Lee travels around the globe to the world’s most exotic locations photographing wildlife and capturing the essence of their personalities on film. He has a special way of communicating with animals and his images depict that relationship. His commitment to wildlife brings a fresh perspective to photography. The artist’s dramatic portrayals of wildlife in their natural surroundings provide viewers an intimate glimpse into their daily lives and is but one reason his images are popular among collectors. “[Photography] transports me into the spirit world of my wild brothers and sisters, where I find myself connecting with them and listening to what they have to say,” Lee said. “My goal in producing a work of photographic art is to create in it the things I see, hear and feel when I’m in that magical space. My art is a collaboration between myself and my wild brothers and sisters. This is why I’m drawn to create images out of the ordinary.”

This “collaboration” can be seen in Lee’s “Mystic World” series inspired by artist Bev Doolittle.

“Not only do images in this series portray my wild brothers and sisters in the spirit world,” Lee explained, “it exposes them communicating with life in our world.”

The photographer’s latest series—which he sometimes refers to as photographic realism with a touch of expressionism—actually look more like paintings, than photographs. “They have everything to do with what happens when I look through my camera’s viewfinder into the eyes of my subject and feel connected,” he said. “There are times I can almost sense my subject’s inner most thoughts. My newest work portrays, to the best of my ability, those feelings and emotions. For me, it’s all about their eyes.”

In addition to these newer images, Lee will also include a selection of his “old standbys” on display for anyone into the more “traditional form” of photography. Festival features ‘unique’ programming NEDERLAND Celebrate local filmmakers and films that are anything but ordinary when the Nederland international Film Festival returns for its second year, Nov. 17-18, with programming “that’s as unique as the town.”

The festival features off-kilter, outof-the-ordinary, and wildly inventive FILM films and focuses on music film that draws from Nederland’s rich history centered around the Caribou Ranch Recording Studio. Screenings and workshops are held at the Nederland Community Center and Backdoor Theatre, 750 Hwy. 72 N. Tickets are $12-$45 and on sale online.

“We are very much looking forward to our second year and feel honored to be in Nederland at the Backdoor Theater.” Jackie Brennan of Colorado Festival Productions said. “We hope to grow there and are happy to be welcomed back. We enjoyed last year and this year will be bigger and better.”

NEDERLAND Mountain Forum for Peace asks everyone to get their “creative flow going” for its annual Liz Caile Express Your Peace Creative Arts Contest, held in honor and memory of the local writer and her fierce commitment to peace, writing and the environment. The WRITING contest encourages people of all & ART ages to get creative and think about the natural environment and social situations around us.

GILPIN COUNTY The Peak to Peak Chorale presents its annual free holiday production in three locations at the end of November and early December. CENTRAL CITY fter six years of being a street vendor at a handful of annual local events and catering increasingly larger gatherings, Joe and Kara Tinucci of JKQ BBQ decided to make a jump to the big time. The couple are now running a full-service restaurant and bar in the historic Teller House with lunch and dinner hours, Thursday-Sunday. The venture has proven to be quite popular with locals, which keeps them—and their staff— busy much of the time. Surprisingly, despite the exhaustion and long hours, they still just consider it a hobby. The couple celebrate their new location during an all-day Grand Opening event, Nov. 9, featuring live music and a full-menu including burgers, salmon, salads and more.

Hobby or not, operating the new restaurant, which also includes a 60-person special event room, is a lot of work. The food part came easy but learning how to run a restaurant has been a process. “There is a lot to learn and a lot to do,” Kara explained. “You don’t realize how much time it takes to inventory and shop and order. We’ve never had a bar, and all of a sudden, we have liquor distributors and beer distributors. We’ve been learning as we go.

It’s been fun, definitely a great experience.”

Even though the couple has been figuring it out as they go, they seem to be doing something right. Positive word-of-mouth and an opportunity to eat and drink in the Teller House again has kept most of the seats full during open hours, 11:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. “We’ve been really well received and that feels really good,” Kara said. “I tear up when I say it. We both get really emotional about it. It’s just an awesome feeling. The amount of support is unexpected. It’s just beyond what we thought. The whole-county support, the whole-city support has just been really good.”

Moving up from working under a pop-up tent to becoming a real restaurateur has been a “slow build,” according to Kara. “The first year we did Lou Bunch Days we made three briskets and six pork shoulders, and we were sold out by 3 p.m.,” she said. “Now, we are doing events that we cook 24 pork shoulders and 15 briskets. The first year we catered the Opera Picnic we served 125 people, this year we served over 400.”

‘Whimsical’ parade holiday highlight ESTES PARK The 30th Annual Catch the Glow Parade will brighten downtown Estes Park the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 23. Each year as many as 20,000 people line Elkhorn Avenue to “catch the glow” of this whimsical holiPARADE day parade, as well as spend the afternoon visiting Santa and strolling through downtown Estes Park.

The parade features more than 40 units, including hand-crafted floats from the Town of Estes Park and non-profits, marching bands, fire

trucks and other specialty vehicles.

The parade caps a day of full activity downtown.

Holiday music is broadcast outdoors throughout town to help set the scene, visitors can interact with strolling animal characters, enjoy family hayrides and visit with Santa Claus in Bond Park from noon to 4 p.m. All activities are free.

The Estes Park Trolley will be making the rounds starting at the Estes Park Visitor Center to stops along Elkhorn Avenue. The complete loop takes about 25 minutes.

Tree cut thins overcrowded vegetation GILPIN COUNTY

Golden Gate Canyon State Park invites families to start a new holiday tradition by cutting a native Christmas tree, Dec. 1, during its annual Christmas Tree Cut and Holiday Open House.

Permits are available for purchase beginning at 9 a.m., Nov. 13. They can SPECIAL be purchased in person at the park’s EVENT Visitor Center, 92 Crawford Gulch Road, or over the phone at 303-5823707. The permit cost is $25 per tree, Golden Gate Canyon State Park hosts a Christwith a limit of two per person, and they will be sold mas Tree Cut & Open House, Nov. 13. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while supplies last.

Beginning Dec. 1, visitors who purchased permits must check in at the visitor center prior to going out and cutting a tree. A valid park pass is also required for each vehicle. The permit is valid rain or snow, and no refunds will be given for bad weather. Complete details and rules can be found online.

By cutting a Christmas tree, the permit holders assist the State Park in thinning overcrowded and dense vegetation. This selective thinning will improve the overall forest health and reduce the impacts of future wildfires.

Participants can warm up at the visitor center with hot drinks, cookies, candy canes and a 10 percent discount on unique presents from the gift shop. In the spirit of giving, canned goods will be collected for the local food bank to help those in need.

Parade, fireworks welcome season

LYONS The bright glow of the holidays is once again coming to the Town of Lyons. The Holiday Parade of Lights, Dec. 1, is filled with illuminated, colorful floats, many of which will be decorated in this year’s theme: Rocky Mountain Holidays.

The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and PARADE & travel on Main Street, a portion of FIREWORKS Hwy. 7, Broadway and Third Avenue. Cars will not be permitted to park on these roads from 4-9 p.m.

Live music and entertainment will follow the parade, along with one of the region’s only fireworks display. The night will close with the Parade Awards Ceremony after the fireworks show, awarding the outstanding parade entries of 2018 on the Raul Vasquez Community Stage in Sandstone Park.

The weekend of holiday festivities in Lyons kickoff with the Lyons Holiday Bazaar, Dec. 1, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Dec. 2, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The proceeds from ornament sales are used to provide high school senior scholarships and assistance to local families in need. brisket, pulled pork, chicken and kielbasa along with St. Louis-style ribs, pig wings and loaded tots. Popular sides like their coleslaw, potato salad, mac and cheese are also available.

Now that JKQ BBQ is operating out of the Teller House and its kitchen, anything is possible. “We have the ability to scratch-make most things that are being served. We are making our BBQ sauce and the sides, except for our tater tots,” Kara said.

“We can do fun things like our Saturday night Steak Night and have weekly specials like our smoked salmon BLT. We can also offer banquet facilities for weddings, anniversaries and more. Any room rental goes directly to the Opera.”

The Tinuccis have also been “menu testing” temporary specials like red pepper and tomato soup, loaded potato skins, house-smoked salmon, baked beans, burgers and homemade apple pie. A recent Gilpin School Homecoming menu included a New York strip steak, stuffed chicken breast, vegetable lasagna, rice pilaf and more. They have also started curing pastrami and bacon. All menu items are available to go as well.

Although most of the menu and catering items they’ve attempted over the years have proven popular, it’s Joe’s smoked meats that keep people coming back. Ever since accidently discovering an affinity for smoking meat when a co-worker in Mississippi introduced it to him 25 years ago, Joe has been perfecting his methods. “I hacked away at it for 15 years. Horribly hacked away at it,” he said.

“Then, [Kara and I] met, and we were like maybe we should start to take this a little more seriously, instead of just getting drunk and making food.”

Once they began to take it seriously, the idea of operating a food truck came up, and that’s when “everything started to click.” By now the couple was living in Las Vegas and were doing some catering. “Joe really wanted a food truck,” Kara explained. “It was right when food trucks were starting out and we were the seventh or eighth food truck in Vegas. It was really successful also, like overwhelming successful.” Even then, they still considered it a hobby. “It was just all a joke at that time. We weren’t taking it serious,” Joe said.

When their baby was born, Joe was faced with the need to get a “real” job. His 25 years of work in the gaming industry led him to a position at The Reserve in Central City, and it wasn’t long before the entire family moved to town. Eventually, just before making a move to Palm Springs, local casino owner Johnny Zimpel offered Joe a job he couldn’t—and didn’t—refuse.

While Joe continues to work his casino job, Kara runs the Skye Cottage Bed and Breakfast while helping plan and cater local events on the side. Together they are raising a toddler and a pair of dogs, one of which is a puppy. With all the other work and responsivity, it’s no wonder they consider the BBQ business a hobby.

They do have help at the restaurant to ease the burden a little, and most of it is local. Central City Alderman Jeff Aiken is back pouring drinks behind the same bar where he was bartender 35 years ago. Larry Bradley, the new chef, recently moved to town from Las Vegas—where he previously worked with Joe on the food truck—following his dream of running a restaurant.

“The Teller House is such a special place. We are doing this for the community. It was so important for us to give back by hiring local, sharing the beautiful Teller House, and bringing awareness to the opera,” Kara said. “There are a lot of people that come in and say, ‘oh, I remember working here’ and it’s just awesome to be sitting in here again.”

The Tinuccis have a lease for the Teller House space until May when the Central City Opera Association, which owns the building, will consider an extension through opera season and the rest of next year. “There is a possibility of us going past that, we just don’t know yet. We know we have to prove ourselves and expend the menu to do more than just BBQ. We want to be able to offer some bistro options as well.” Kara said.

Taqueria hosts mezcal dinner LYONS

A five-course dinner with mezcal pairings and live music is offered by Mojo Taqueria, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. Each course will be accompanied by a mezcal taster or cocktail and Mojo bartender Camden Steed will provide descriptions of each mezcal throughout the SPECIAL dining experience. Ski Season Preview Area resorts debut new lifts, terrain, amenities

C

olorado’s 2018-19 ski season is underway. A “high-energy crowd” of skiers and snowboarders celebrated the official start of the season, Oct. 19, when Arapahoe Basin Ski Area opened for daily operations. A similar scene was found the following day at Loveland Ski Area when it began spinning its lifts for the season. Opening day signals the start of another world-class winter in Colorado, where life-long skiers, new participants and those looking to enjoy the mountain environment can enjoy Colorado’s consistently great winter conditions, bluebird skies and warm welcome.

Significant snowfall in October allowed the ski areas—both of which are located along the Continental Divide between Clear Creek and Summit counties—to begin snowmaking early and kick-off the season without delay. The early-season snow gave Wolf Creek Ski Area in southwest Colorado the opportunity to unofficially start the season with weekend skiing and riding beginning Oct. 13. Most other area resorts start welcoming skiers and riders by mid-November.

“The early season snowfall has created momentum and excitement for the opening of the ski season here in Colorado,” Colorado Ski Country USA President and CEO Melanie Mills said. “After months of hard work and millions of dollars of investment in the guest experience, Colorado is ready to welcome skiers, snowboarders and guests to our ski areas, whether they’re long-time Colorado skiers or first-time visitors. Winter has arrived in the Colorado mountains and it’s great to see winter sports enthusiasts out in force.”

Colorado Ski Country USA member resorts—including Loveland, Echo Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Winter Park, Eldora, Copper Mountain and Granby Ranch—as well as Breckenridge and Keystone, spent the off-season working on major upgrades. Across the state, six new chairlifts, six new dining experiences and two terrain expansions debut this season. Many of these new improvement projects are at resorts in this area, all of which have new experiences awaiting their guests this season.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area

When it opened in mid-October, Arapahoe Basin debuted its The Beavers four-person chairlift and an expanded The Beavers and The Steep Gullies areas for intermediate and expert guests. “We are all getting excited about the start of our ski season. It is here, and we are ready to go,” Director of Marketing and Communications Leigh Hierholzer said.

A-Basin opened approximately 371 acres of new terrain last season as a “preview.” This summer, operations crews constructed 97 more acres of tree skiing and continued improving the rest of the terrain with grading, glading and installation of a new chairlift and picnic areas.

Opening this season, II Rifugio at Snowplume will open to offer guests the experience of a European-style delicatessen in a mountain setting similar to what you would find in the Alps. Guests can enjoy antipasto, charcuterie and a selection of imported cheeses, along with splits of wine and a selection of imported beers. According to Food and Beverage Director Christopher Rybak, the Refugio’s concept was inspired by the breathtaking views from the Snowplume building at the summit. “You have spectacular, high-alpine views in every direction from that building. It’s the perfect location to have that European-style dining experience,” he said.

Eldora

A year after installing the Alpenglow six-person chairlift, the ski area debuts RFID pass technology. New glading projects and upgrades to Eldora’s electrical and communication systems will also give guests more reasons to smile, as will more frequent early-season and mid-week events and activities. Eldora opens on Nov. 16.

Granby Ranch

This season, Granby Ranch offers groups an opportunity to rent the ski area’s entire East Mountain for an evening.

Guests will have full access to the East Mountain night skiing terrain from 5-9 p.m. The resort plans to open on Dec. 14.

Loveland Ski Area

When it opened in October, Loveland Ski Area unveiled its new lift, Chet’s Dream. Chet’s Dream is the first highspeed quad in the ski area’s history and is named after the ski area’s longtime owner, Chester R. “Chet” Upham Jr. “Chet’s Dream is the big news for this season,” Marketing Director John Sellers said. “This new high-speed quad from Leitner-Poma replaced Lift 1 and will shorten the ride time from about eight minutes to under three minutes.
