Seek support if you, friend struggling emotionally

FRONT RANGE According to federal data U.S. suicide rates are at their highest since World War II. While some states have experienced a rise of 10 to 20 percent, others have seen a much higher increase, including Colorado, where suicide rates have increased 34 percent. If you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support, talk

to someone NOW. If you or someone you know are having thoughts about suicide, call 1-800-273-TALK (8255). In Colorado, you may call Colorado Crisis Services at 1-844-493-TALK (8255) or text “TALK” to 38255. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. If someone you know is struggling emotionally or having a hard time, you can be the difference in getting them the help they need. It’s impor-

tant to take care of yourself when you are supporting someone through a difficult time, as this may stir up difficult emotions. If it does, please reach out for support yourself. There’s no single cause for suicide. It most often occurs when stressors and health issues converge to create an experience of hopelessness and despair. Depression is the most common condition associated with suicide, and it is often undiagnosed or untreated. Some warning signs may help determine if a loved one is at risk for suicide, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change. • Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves • Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain • Talking about being a burden to others • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly • Sleeping too little or too much • Withdrawing or isolating themselves • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge • Extreme mood swings There are numerous places to call and visit for help for yourself or others including Mental Health Partners, 1333 Iris Ave. in Boulder. It offers resources at mhpcolorado.org/Home. aspx or call 303-443-8500. For 24hour emergency services call 303447-1665. The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado also offers information and assistance at suicidepreventioncolorado.org and 720-934-2387. Mental Health Partners and Peak to Peak Housing & Human Services offer a free Suicide Prevention Training workshop, Aug. 12, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Nederland Community Center, 750 Hwy. 72. If you are unable to attend, e-mail trainings@mhpcolorado. org to receive information about future trainings. If you need support for suicide grief or suicidal thoughts but are not in crisis, find resources from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at afsp.org/find-support or resources from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at suicidepreventionlifeline. org/help-yourself and suicidepreventionlifeline.org/help-someone-else.

Telling Tales

Intimate mountain venue hosts special evening of Colorado songwriters

T

ALLENSPARK he Old Gallery once again provides mountain residents an opportunity to hear exceptional artists perform and share the stories behind their songs in an intimate venue at its Songwriters in the Round event, Aug. 17, 7-9 p.m. featuring Theresa Peterson, Bill Huston and Jackson Emmer. They will take turns playing original songs and telling the stories behind them. Songwriters in the Round debuted at The Old Gallery in 2017 with two performances curated by singer-songwriter Peterson, the co-founder of Boulder In-The-Round at eTown. “Our artists were thrilled with the opportunity to perform in the mountains,” Peterson said. “The Old Gallery has amazing acoustics and offers a Steinway piano for our songwriters to use. But what the songwriters love most of all is the true listening room experience there. The Old Gallery audience is attentive and supportive. It’s much different than playing at a bar or coffee shop where patrons are more interested in conversation than a songwriter’s lyrics.” The August Songwriters in the Round is again curated by Peterson and includes Huston and Emmer, who are playing the event for the first time. Peterson’s smooth tone echoes the ease of singers like Joni Mitchell and Alison Krauss, floating between octaves with melodies that stretch the line between old and new. Peterson’s lyrics “paint pictures, buckle knees and leave a sense of depravity and hope, wrapped up in unique chord structures and alternate tunings.” With a songwriting style marked by vivid imagery and honest stories, Bill Huston has been performing throughout Colorado and beyond for many years. Influenced by John Prine, Townes Van Zandt and Conor Oberst, Bill’s songs “remain true to classic roots but find an original life through the unique poetic

lens and voice of this contemporary troubadour.” Based in Carbondale, Jackson Emmer has Courtesy photos quietly built his reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter on the outskirts of country music. His work “blends humor with heartache, and tradition with exploration” and his “whiskey-smooth, conversational singing style is as distinct as his writing.” He won awards at the Telluride Troubadour Contest, Folks Festival Songwriter Showcase and Songwriter Serenade last year. Tickets for guests 16 years old or older are available on The Old Gallery website or during regular hours at The Old Gallery, 14863 Hwy.7 or at the door, subject to availability, for $15. A cash bar is available during events. If attending, consider carpooling and do not park in front of The Old Gallery or adjacent fire station. R

an Off The Rooster is an Estes Park-based, all-women trio with Amy Glenney on bass, Jacie Ullrich on guitar, and Erin Dahlby on mandolin. Combining diverse musical backgrounds, bluegrass instrumentation, and a fun-driving attitude, these talented musicians are best known for their original song choices, creative arrangements, and three-part harmonies. Band members first got together in August 2013 and immediately formed a strong bond of music and friendship. All three, since an early age, have been drawn to music and the power it has to bring people together. The act released it’s first studio album, Red Wine in a Paper Cup, in May. According to the band’s Kickstarter information, “In the last five years, we have all been through personal challenges and life changes, but through it all music has sustained our friendships and relationships with our fans. We have a deep respect and admiration for each other, and we love creating music together and sharing it with others. We also like to have fun and make people laugh, and this also shows through our music. After five years of playing live shows, we are so excited to be recording a studio album, and we can’t wait to share it with you.” The album was produced by Sally Van Meter and recorded by Brain McRae in Lyons. Jessie Burns joined the band on fiddle, along with other special guests. James Tuttle mixed the album and mastering was done by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering. The cover was created by Nadine Sekerez, a local visual artist, songwriter and performing musician. “What they offer their fans is a love of performing, singing, and a real commitment to good songwriting… they bring their love of music to their audiences… and are unique to the music community. Producing them has been a privilege for me this year. My hope is that all those who listen to their newest recording… will see in Ran Off the Rooster just what I do,” Van Meter said. T

he Lyons Great Outdoor Quilt Show returns for its third year, Aug. 10, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and features more than 100 quilts displayed outside of Lyons Quilting, 42 E. Main St., from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. View a wide range of modern work from regional quilters for free in the store’s parking lot. The top three quilts with the most viewers choice votes receive gift cards from Lyons Quilting. The quilt show is the premiere public event for the store, which opened six years and has seen tremendous success. Tracey Barber opened Lyons Quilting on Aug. 1, 2013 after purchasing the inventory from a store that had recently closed. After a great six weeks and making it through her grand opening celebration, the Flood of 2013 closed access to town for nearly a month. It took two years for the store to outgrow its location, so the business purchased the much larger former Black Bear Restaurant building. Lyons Quilting is now the premier shop in Colorado with over 7,000 bolts of fabric and known for its “homey feel, bright lighting, great parking and friendly staff.” Lyons Quilting carries a wide array of fabrics including basic cottons, novelties, flannel, the largest selection of Kaffe Fassett in the area, all of the Kona solids and more than 2,000 batiks. Barber has been quilting for more than 13 years. She is an award-winning quilter that loves to teach classes and share her passion. The store offers several class each week throughout the year.

During the Lyons Great Outdoor Quilt Show, the store also hosts a large exhibit of Barbara Yates Beasley works of fiber art. The Boulder artist captures the beauty of animals, both domestic and wild, in unique fabric and paper collage. Meet the artist and talk to her about her artwork. “I spend as much time as I can around animals with camera in hand. When I get back to the studio, I study the expressions and body language I caught with the camera. When a particular animal jumps out at me and has something to say, I will listen and translate for the viewer,” Beasley explains. “That begins the process of choosing color, be it natural or expressive, as a starting point. Going Wild

Wild Bunch members raise funds to take show on road By Jeffrey V. Smith elive the “Old West” with the Central City Wild Bunch, a small group of Gilpin County volunteers who present shows and shootouts on Central City’s Main Street, and a few special events out of town, during the summer. The re-enactors, sponsored by the Gilpin County Historical Socierty, are seen by many as ambassadors for the town and have delighted residents and visitors of all ages with their semi-historical, mostly comical skits for more than a decade. The Wild Bunch spends a rare day off of Main Street performing at Roy’s Last Shot, 17268 Hwy. 119 in mid-Gilpin county, Aug. 10, at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to enjoy the free shows and a lunch buffet donated by owners Roy and Barb Stewart from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Donations will be collected for the Historical Society to help send the group to an event in Kansas. “We’ve been doing this for 11 years and we’ve never taken money for it,” founder Mike Keeeler said. “All our tips we make during the day when we are doing shows goes to the Historical Society. The Historical Society has been graceful enough to sponsor us.” Each of the Central City Wild Bunch performances are about 10 minutes, depending on the skit. “If you go much longer than that you start putting people to sleep,” Keeler said. “They want to see the

That’s what they want to see.” Additional funds are needed to send the group—which includes Keeler, Chuck Fullen, Tom “The Undertaker” Matthews, Kristie Schovajsa and Jonas Schrock—to Wichita for the Old Cow Town Museum’s Age of the Gunfighter, Sept. 28-29, the premier gunfighting event in the Midwest. The group was invited to attend, and its members can’t wait. “The whole town changes. I mean you walk in and the whole town is Victorian and like the 1800s,” Keeler said. “We’re one group out of 12 that does skits and we’re going to do three shows… then there are 150-gun fires on top of the performances. The whole town will have a show going on every 18 minutes. So, you can watch any type of show you want.” The Wild Bunch mostly performs Saturdays on Main Street in Central City from noon-4 p.m. through August and again at the Hot Rod Hill Climb, Sept. 14. The group is also “branching out” and getting paid to perform in Morrison and attends events like Golden’s Buffalo Bill Days among others. If unable to attend the upcoming benefit or other performances, support the group by making a donation to the Gilpin County Historical Society in the name of the Central City Wild Bunch. Meet, learn about alpacas at market

ESTES PARK Learn how to care for an alpaca, and much more, at the 20th Annual Estes Park Alpaca Market, Aug. 31-Sept. 1, at the Estes Park Events Complex, 1125 Rooftop Way. The event is free and open to everyone 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. SPECIAL The unique market is free to the EVENT public and provides a chance to meet alpacas, see the array of products that can be made using their fiber and find answers to any alpaca related question. According to organizers, the two alpaca breeds, the huacaya and suri, are hearty animals, easy to raise and take a minimal amount of care. Over 200 alpaca ranches call Colorado home and the species number over 300,000 in the U.S. and are raised in all states. They produce 22 colors of fiber—sheared twice a year in Colorado. Its durability and insulating properties make it perfect for clothing and household items. “First time attendees are always taken in by the uniqueness of alpacas, and then quickly learn about the high quality of garments that can be made from alpaca fiber,” Market Director Larry Zierer of LaZyB Acres Alpacas said. “Farms go out of their way to educate visitors on any questions about the alpaca lifestyle, and there is always the cuteness factor of alpaca cria (babies). Visitors are welcome and encouraged to cuddle with an alpaca and make new friends.” Page 16

Meet, touch and “snuggle” with alpacas during the Estes Park Alpaca Market, Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

After hugging an alpaca, plan to shop the market’s vast selection of vendors offering alpaca fiber made goods from sweaters, socks, gloves and rugs to household items. Take home some raw fiber for the next big project. “Craft people, like spinners, knitters and weavers, also have an opportunity to possibly meet the alpaca that produced the fiber they may buy,” Zierer explained. “We personally know all the vendors and farms so it’s like old-home-week and a chance to catch up with friends we don’t see that often. It is a fun event, and very laid back as compared to other events,” Zierer said. Visit estesparkalpacamarket.com or call 303475-4793 for more information.

COVER STORY

Summit Up! Bag a peak, large or small, to cool off naturally

A

ugust is the perfect month to seek out higher ground to beat the summer heat, enjoy some warm-weather exercise and take in amazing vistas. Snow levels, despite the record amounts received this winter and spring, are nearing their lowest point at the same time temperatures are reaching their highest. When the heat is on in the mountains, the best solution is to go up. The mountain communities of the Peak to Peak Region, from Central City to Estes Park, are at the doorstep of some of the more popular and accessible high-altitude destinations in the Front Range. While high-country residents may not be dealing with same extreme temperatures as down in the flatlands, it is nice that when an escape from the heat is needed, the solution is close at hand. National Summit Day, which kicks off the month on Aug. 3, is a celebration of summits and those who climb them. Not only is it a chance to get out and enjoy the heights, breathe the fresh air, and make memories with all the people who love those things, too, it’s also a great reminder to take advantage of the few remaining weeks local summits are accessible. Whether your summit is a 14er or something a little less daunting, boot up and hit the trail to join the community of hikers. Visit backpacker.com/nationalsummitday to register, locate group hikes and find suggestions on where to go. Along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, several National Forest trailheads allow for easy access to the peaks along the Continental Divide in the James Peak Wilderness, Indian Peaks Wilderness, Brainard Lake Recreation Area and Rocky Mountain National Park. The Golden Gate Canyon State Park, while no where near as high in elevation, also provides numerous places to reach a scenic summit. There is no reason to go someplace simply because it’s on a list, so don’t limit yourself to 14ers and popular destinations. There are many other local peaks worthy of exploring, including the top of the hill behind your house. No matter where you go, once you reach the summit be sure to take time to enjoy the view and appreciate your accomplishment. As with all trips to the backcountry, hikers need to be smart and be prepared. Among other precautions, choose an easy route your first time out, plan and study any routes you plan to take, be prepared for changing weather and bring multiple layers, hike with another person and tell others of your plans, start early, stay hydrated, fuel up before starting and along the route, take breaks, use sunscreen, bring a first aid kit and be sure to break in new boots before a big hike. Avalanche danger also exists in summer, so be aware and educated. While there are countless ways to get yourself to altitude in the summer, a few of the more popular and accessible places are mentioned here. Find a place you’ve never been or get inspired to look for relief some place all your own. Once you’ve gone higher, hiking, biking, climbing, sight-seeing and most other

activities are all more enjoyable in the cool, thin air. This is only a jumping off point, so be sure to explore and discover the many other options, especially those found on the way to the bigger ones. ARAPAHOE/ROOSEVELT NATIONAL FOREST The Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest encompasses 1.5 million acres and extends north to the Wyoming border, south of I-70 to Mount Evans and west across the Continental Divide to the Williams Fork area. Trails throughout the forest provide numerous access points to high elevations. High alpine lakes abound and some of the highest passes can be reached from all over the region. To reach some of the highest peaks, consider routes to James Peak, Rollins Pass and the Continental Divide from East Porter near Rollinsville; Arapahoe Pass and the Divide from Hessie, Fourth of July and or Rainbow Lakes trailheads near Nederland; Pawnee Pass and Mt. Audubon from the Brainard Lake Recreation Area; and Buchanan Pass from the Peaceful Valley/Camp Dick area. Many mountain summits, most more than 13,000 feet, can be reached from the Continental Divide Trail. JAMES PEAK WILDERNESS The 17,000-acre James Peak Wilderness is located within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests within Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties. Adjacent to the Continental Divide on the eastern slope, the James Peak Wilderness Area includes several peaks over 13,000 feet and more than a dozen sparkling alpine lakes. INDIAN PEAK WILDERNESS Indian Peaks Wilderness became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1978 and spans 76,711 acres. This wilderness shares borders with James Peak Wilderness to the south and Rocky Mountain National Park to the north. Elevations range from 8,300 to just over 13,500 feet and the area includes over 50 lakes and 28 hiking trails that cover about 133 miles. Named for various Native American tribes, the Indian peaks top out over 13,000 feet. BRAINARD LAKE/MOUNT AUDOBON The Brainard Lake Recreation Area is surrounded by subalpine forest set in a glacially-carved valley. The craggy peaks of the Continental Divide provide

a spectacular backdrop for visitors to enjoy. With a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreation opportunities available, Brainard Lake Recreation Area is the most popular destination on the Boulder Ranger District. Hiking trails to the west of the area enter into the Indian Peaks Wilderness. From here the 13,229-foot Mount Audubon is easily reached. It’s the sixth tallest peak in the Wilderness, and the highest with a maintained trail up to the summit. LONGS PEAK At 14,259 feet, Longs Peak towers above all other summits in Rocky Mountain National Park. The flattopped monarch is seen from almost anywhere in the park. In the summertime, when conditions allow, thousands climb to the summit via the Keyhole Route. The Keyhole Route is not a hike. It is a climb that crosses enormous sheer vertical rock faces, often with falling rocks requiring scrambling, where an un-roped fall would likely be fatal. Enjoy the experience, but be willing to turn around at any time. Join Rocky Mountain National Park’s Climbing Rangers, Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center to learn about climbing Longs Peak. This presentation will discuss various climbing routes and lessons learned, with a focus on how to prepare for and manage risks for a successful ascent and descent of the classic Keyhole Route. TRAIL RIDGE ROAD SCENIC BYWAY/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK ALPINE VISITOR CENTER Covering the 48 miles between Estes Park on the park’s east side and Grand Lake on the west, Trail Ridge Road more than lives up to its billing. Eleven miles of this high highway travel above treeline, the elevation near 11,500 feet. As it winds across the tundra’s vastness to its high point at 12,183 feet elevation, the route offers visitors thrilling views, wildlife sightings and spectacular alpine wildflower exhibitions, all from the comfort of their car. At the Alpine Visitor Center, located near the road’s highest point, reach a nearby summit with a short hike. Try to get up to altitude while you can, whether escaping the summer heat or simply getting out into nature, to take advantage of areas that are only accessible a few months of the year. Although a single day, let National Summit Day inspire you all month to seek higher ground.
