Learn to prevent heart disease in February
PEAK TO PEAK Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. The good news is heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared February as the first American Heart Month to tackle heart disease in the United States. It is a chance to raise awareness about

preventing heart disease. If you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes, you can take steps to lower your risk for heart disease. Your health care provider should test your blood levels of cholesterol at least once every 5 years. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked on a regular basis. By living a healthy lifestyle, you can help keep your blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar normal and lower your risk for heart disease and

heart attack. A healthy lifestyle includes eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough physical activity, not smoking or using other forms of tobacco and limiting alcohol use. Choosing healthful meal and snack options can help you avoid heart disease and its complications. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and fewer processed foods. Eating foods low in saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol and high in fiber can help prevent high cholesterol. Limiting salt (sodium) in your diet also can lower your blood pressure. Limiting sugar in your diet can lower you blood sugar level to prevent or help control diabetes. Being overweight or obese increases your risk for heart disease. To determine if your weight is in a healthy range, doctors often calculate your body mass index. Doctors sometimes also use waist and hip measurements to calculate excess body fat. They may use special equipment to calculate excess body fat and hydration status. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower your blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar levels. For adults, the Surgeon General recommends two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, like brisk walking or bicycling, every week. Children and adolescents should get one hour of physical activity every day. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quitting will lower your risk for heart disease. Your doctor can suggest ways to help you quit. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can raise your blood pressure. Men should have no more than two drinks per day, and women only one. The American Heart Association in Denver hosts the Drop Red Gorgeous Fashion Show, Feb. 9, at the Wellshire Event Center, 3333 S. Colorado Blvd. in Denver. The event includes a heart-healthy brunch from 10:30-11:45 a.m. and a fashion show from noon-1 p.m. featuring models who have been personally affected by heart diseases and stroke. Attendees are encouraged to take charge of their heart health and be inspired by the stories of the models. This event is free, but RSVPs are required and attendance will be capped. More state parks join reservation-only camping GILPIN COUNTY Golden Gate Canyon State Park began requiring reservation-only camping, Jan. 1, along with 14 other state parks. Starting on the first of the new year, those state parks converted into a reservation-only system, meaning campers will need to have a reservation ahead of time to set up at a site. They can do this anytime online. Colorado Parks & Wildlife is also getting rid of its $10 reservation-only camping fee. The change comes in the wake www.mmacmonthly.com
of a successful test of this system at five parks in 2018. Those parks were Cheyenne Mountain, Eleven Mile, Staunton, St. Vrain and Trinidad Lake. The park managers from those parks reported that the pilot program of the system was successful. CPW said allowing campers to reserve a spot eliminates the gamble in a first-come, first-served area. Campers who stay in a reservation-only location without a reservation may be cited. The new 15 state parks that will be
added to this list in the new year are Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area, Boyd Lake, Cherry Creek, Golden Gate Canyon, Highline Lake, Jackson Lake, John Martin Reservoir, Lathrop, Mueller, North Sterling, Pearl Lake, Ridgeway, State Forest, Steamboat Lake and Yampa River. Songwriter’s project puts it ‘all on table’

eloved Front Range “troubadour” Danny Shafer, a fixture in the Colorado folk music scene for decades, celebrates the release of Songbook—a new 12-song recording and its companion 10-chapter book—on Feb. 15, 8:30-11:30 p.m,. at Oskar Blues Grill & Brew in Lyons. The $5 cover includes a book and download of the recording. “This Songbook, it’s a shot straight in the arm of pure truth, both musical and personal.” Boulder musician Greg Schochet says in the book’s forward. “Forget the big-name music biographies and autobiographies us musicians love to read… here’s where you’ll find out what’s it’s like for us 99-percenters moving some tables to set up our PA in the corner, and what it means to keep music front and center when everything else around you won’t stop changing.” The Lyons resident, who performs more than 200 shows a year and regularly hosts Boulder-area open-mic nights, calls Songbook, the “most personal” project he’s ever done. “It’s all on the table,” he said. “Songbook is what I hope these songs would sound like in the middle of the night on the front porch,” Shafer explains. “It is a full circle realization that I have
a real need to be back to my folk roots. One guitar and one voice… I hope you enjoy it for what it is: a songwriter keeping it simple and wishing for you all these things that I am writing about.” One of the more developed stories in the book is about Shafer’s shortlived act Danny Shafer and the 21st Century featuring Jubal, Dechen Hawk, Chris Ramey and Todd May. Stories of band members, “workshopping” in Nederland, band life, loss of life and “the crazy odds it takes to have a band out and playing gigs,” is all included. The new full-length recording includes a solo acoustic collection of Shafer’s songs from 1990 to 2019. Included on the recording are Americans, 1943, My Grandmother Prayed to Mary, Friday Morning AM, She Wore the 50s So Well, Alone in This World, Good Days & Bad Days, Hobos Lullaby, The Sun Goes Down, Except For You & Me, 100 Watt Town and Farming. Shafer wants to “bring it home” for the release at Oskar Blues, 303 Main St., and keep it affordable. The show includes a solo set from Shafer with Chris Ramey joining in on a few songs on pedal steel. The Songbook album is available for download from CD Baby, Apple Music and more. NOTEWORTHY Magic Music - 40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Movie Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

oulder county legends Magic Music—dubbed the state’s first “jam band”—have a storied history that truly complements its name. Hailing from various cities around the United States, the group began as a “merry troop of renegades whose brotherhood was eternally forged in the music they made.” The songs on 40 Years in the Making: The Magic Music Movie Original Motion Picture Soundtrack were recorded in the 1970s and never released, until now. The album, released digitally in September 2018, features music from the film written and performed by Magic Music—featuring Chris Daniels, Will Luckey, George Cahill, Rob Galloway and Kevin Milburn—including original recordings of the band from the early 1970s. The documentary, released in 2017, is the directorial debut of TV writer Lee Aronsohn—of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory—who tracks down the scattered members of one of Boulder’s most influential and elusive bands in the hope that, 40 years after they broke up, he can get them to play one last show. Aronsohn, who attended the University of Colorado, was one of the band’s biggest fans and the songs he heard Magic Music play on campus continued to echo in his head, but there was nothing to listen to. He would hum the songs he remembered to himself, and sing them to his children. GILPIN COUNTY he Gilpin County Public Library gallery features the photographic work of artist, Kathy Banich—a 30-year resident of the Sugarloaf area in Boulder County—through March 22. The gallery is free and open to the public during normal operating hours. The artist has been working to re-establish her wildlife archive of the local area since 2010 when she and her family lost heir home and belongings in the Fourmile Canyon Fire. The images displayed at the library were all captured in the region at Sugarloaf, Walden Ponds, Rocky Mountain National Park and Mount Evans. “From a very young age, photographs have had a profound effect on me,” Banich said. “Some of my earliest memories as a young girl are sitting in front of my mom’s enormous photo albums, gazing at each picture in wonderment; noticing every detail of each captured moment as well as characterizing the people pictured. This nostalgic element of reflection ignited an enthusiastic interest as a child that continues to fuel my passion for photography today.” Living adjacent to Roosevelt National Forest, Banich finds herself frequently sharing both time and space with her neighboring wildlife. “The respect, trust, patience and final reward of photographing, thus archiving an instant in time between self and bird or mammal is a meditative/surreal experience which I find immense comfort in,” she adds. Banich’s work can be seen at Washington Hall in Central City and the Glass Tipi Gallery in Ward. She has been featured, and won awards, at Gilpin Arts’ annual Juried Exhibitions and Art at the Center shows in Nederland. She has also had her worked displayed at several juried exhibits in Boulder and the Adventist Hospitals Healing Arts Traveling Juried Show. “I feel truly blessed to be able to pursue my passion for photography—I’m both humbled and appreciative for the opportunity to display and share my work,” she said. ‘Green Book’ displayed
DENVER The award-winning film The Green Book recently received five Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay. Visitors can temporarily view a 1949 edition of The Negro Motorist Green MUSEUM Book, the film’s inspiration, in the Lincoln Hills exhibit at History Colorado Center, 1200 N. Broadway. Green Books books were published by postal employee Victor H. Green to help African Americans find welcoming hotels, restaurants, and boarding houses. The first edition was published in 1936 and continued until 1964 when the Civil Rights Act ended discrimination in public accommodations. Lincoln Hills, located 38 miles west of Denver, became a mountain resort community in Gilpin County. It was the largest resort west of the Mississippi built by and for African Americans. The entire Lincoln Hills resort was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. he YMCA of the Rockies hosts its 4th annual Mountaineering Weekend, Feb. 15-18, featuring fun and engaging activities for all ages including educational sessions, guided snowshoe hikes, search-and-rescue dogs, yoga classes, a snow cave, sled-dog presentation and all regular wintertime programs. Everything is free for guests staying in lodge rooms or cabins while day passes for guests staying off-grounds are available for $25 a day. YMCA of the Rockies, 2515 Tunnel Road, is located on more than 800 acres bordering Rocky Mountain National Park, providing the perfect landscape for outdoor enthusiasts and their families, and dogs, to explore mountaineering. Whether it’s your first time out, or your family has camped in national parks many times, this special event has excursions for every level. During the weekend, check out educational sessions on winter survival tips and mountaineering skills and learn about avalanche awareness, beacon rescue searches, orienteering and the best first aid for backcountry. Experience guided snowshoe hikes into the National Park. Search-and-rescue dogs and handlers will demonstrate how they locate missing hikers while a sled-dog presentation includes a puppy meet-and-greet. This year, the weekend also includes special guest speakers Ricardo Peña, mountain guide and professional musician, and Ulyana Horodyskyj, a scientist, mountaineer, and part-time professor. They will take participants on a journey, exploring how fragile environments are being impacted by a changing climate. Peña will speak about his very special connection to one of the greatest survival stories of all time: The Andes Survivors. The event begins Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. with the Climbing Kickoff featuring an indoor climbing wall and refreshments. The Dawn Wall climbing film will be screened at 7:30 p.m. Activities continue on Feb. 16 with beginners yoga at 8 a.m. Learn about ice anchors from an Alaskan glacier guide at 9:30 a.m. and learn to build, set and maintain snow caves at 10:30 a.m. A search-and-rescue dog presentation with Jayne Zmijewski and her certified search-and-rescue dog begins at 1 p.m. and a Mountain Guardians presentation about safety in the mountains is at 2:15 p.m. Enjoy a two-mile Glacier Creek hike at 3:30 p.m. The keynote speakers start their first night talk at 7 p.m. Begin Sunday with a high-intensity workout during Boot Camp at 7:30 a.m. A dog sled demonstration by racer Meg Mizzoni and her team is at 9 a.m. Learn about winter warmth and fire making skills at 11 a.m. and winter navigation with maps and a compass at 1 p.m. A National Park bus tour begins at 3:30 p.m. The bus will stop for photo opportunities and short walk. Keynote speakers begin their second night talk at 7 p.m. Join the Hikemasters for a guided, three-mile, introductory snowshoe hike to Emerald Lake at 8 a.m. on Feb. 18. Winter Trails
Area trails provide access to winter’s backcountry wonders
C
olorado and the Peak to Peak region is a yearround destination offering unmatched potential for adventure, while breathtaking scenic landscapes provides opportunity for winter experiences on trails normally popular in the summer. Outdoor enthusiasts celebrate winter in the region because with the falling snow comes a new selection of activities to be enjoyed on the area’s diverse trails. Along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway a pair of snowshoes or waterproof boots can unveil a hidden world of winter beauty and sensational settings. If well prepared, winter hiking is a wonderful way to stay active and in tune with nature. As amazing as it can be, hazards exist when in the backcountry. Anyone planning to participate in winter sports must be prepared for avalanches, quick changes in weather and exhaustion. Snow can hide dangers like cliffs, rock fall, tree wells and deadfall. Skills and gear to handle the risks are essential. Always check conditions, weather and maps before leaving and dress in layers with insulating, waterproof clothing. Protect eyes and skin from the sun with sunglasses and sunscreen and carry water. There are many popular places to enjoy trails and explore winter scenery and tranquility along the Peak to Peak Byway. Here are a few suggestions to explore further.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park
Dense pine forests and 36 miles of trails make this state park in Gilpin County a prime spot for snowshoeing. The park’s Panorama Point Scenic Overlook offers views of more than 100 miles of the Continental Divide. Many of the roads and camping loops in Reverend’s Ridge Campground are closed and not plowed in winter making it an ideal play park for beginners. The terrain is mostly flat and snow generally holds all season. The Raccoon Trail Loop is a moderate 2.5 mile loop accessed from Reverend’s Ridge Campground or Panorama Point Scenic Overlook. In wet or dry years, this is one of the better choices for winter use. It generally has good snow and always good scenery. James Peak Wilderness
Adjacent to the Continental Divide and Indian Peaks Wilderness to the north, the 17,015 acre James Peak Wilderness is located within Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties and receives a large amount of snow each winter. The area includes several peaks Page 16

Explore area trails in winter for spectacular scenery and tranquility.
over 13,000 feet and more than a dozen alpine lakes. From the East Portal of the Moffat Train Tunnel, the South Boulder Creek Trail heads west. After a mile the Forest Lakes trail forks to the north. Both South Boulder Creek Trail and Forest Lakes Trail are popular ski or snowshoe treks to alpine lakes. Hessie Trailhead
The Hessie Trailhead near Nederland is a popular winter destination with trails leading through pine forests to Lost Lake, King Lake and beyond. Winter parking is in the town of Eldroa about a mile short of the trailhead. Snowshoers of all levels will enjoy the history, scenery and tranquility of the area. Jenny Creek Trailhead
The Jenny Creek Trail begins at the Jenny Creek Trailhead just outside of Eldora Mountain Resort’s private parking lot. The first mile is only open during the Eldora Mountain Resort’s operating season in winter. The trail intersects Guinn Mountain Winter Trail, which splits off to the Colorado Mountain Club’s Arestua Hut and ultimately reaches Yankee Doodle Lake on the Rollins Pass Road. Mud Lake & Caribou Ranch Open Space
Good beginning snowshoe trails are found at Mud Lake Open Space park north of Nederland on C.R. 126. There are two short loop trails and an out-andback Caribou Ranch Link. Further up the road, in the shadow of the Continental Divide, the 2,151 acres of Caribou Ranch Open Space offer a variety of landscapes to explore including forests, meadows, wetlands and the historical Blue Bird mining complex. Brainard Lake Recreation Area
The Brainard Lake Recreation Area is one of most popular destinations in the Boulder Ranger District. Fees are not charged during the winter op-

erating season and parking is at the Brainard Gateway Parking Lot to access trails. Several dedicated snowshoe trails and a road closed to vehicular traffic in winter lead to peaceful Brainard Lake. Follow snowshoe signs on trees to stay on snowshoe-only trails in this crisscrossed area. Numerous other trails suitable for snowshoes and winter hiking cover the area while even more begin at Brainard Lake and head into the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area to destinations including Long, Isabelle, Mitchell and Blue lakes. Dogs are allowed only on the Brainard Lake and Lefthand Park Reservoir Roads, which are closed to motorized traffic. Visit fs.usda.gov/detail/ arp and cmcboulder.org to learn more.
Sourdough Trail
The Sourdough Trail is a long-distance trail with multiple access points that facilitate moderate outand-back trips, end-to-end shuttle trips and multiple side-loop opportunities. It intersects Little Raven, South Saint Vrain, Beaver Reservoir Cutoff and Buchanan Pass trails. The entire Sourdough Trail runs 12.5 miles, so it is popular to take on either the north or south section from the Red Rock Lake Trailhead at Brainard Lake, which is the trail’s high point. Other access points includes Beaver Reservoir Road Trailhead and at Peaceful Valley, 5.8 miles north of the Brainard Lake Road. Parking is at the intersection to Camp Dick Road, which is unplowed in winter. Learn more at fs.usda.gov/detail/arp.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park offers 355 miles of trails to suit any fitness and experience level. Winter is a spectacular time to visit the park. Most park trails can be explored with snowshoes. Just 3.5 miles round-trip, the trail to Emerald Lake is easy-tomoderate offering awesome panoramas of Nymph, Dream and Emerald lakes, along with a few frozen waterfalls. Stop at any visitor center to get the latest snow and avalanche conditions and discuss the best path for your needs with the rangers. Rangers lead free snowshoe ecology tours through March every Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Reservations are required; call 970-586-1206.
