Give much-needed blood, discover CBD in January

January is National Blood Donor Month, declared by President Richard Nixon in 1970, to pay tribute to voluntary blood donors and increase donation by others. Blood donations typically drop off during and immediately after the winter holidays, which makes Blood Donor Month a critical time for the American Red Cross.

Due to increased seasonal illnesses and inclement weather conditions, donations of blood and platelets decline and demand increases. The American

Red Cross and Blood Banks of America encourage everyone who can donate to continue their donations. Those who have never donated, to make an appointment. Blood donation is safer than ever before and saves lives. Millions of people including cancer patients, organ recipients, and victims of accidents; rely on blood donations.

The Red Cross needs to collect more than 13,000 donations every day to keep the blood supply ready and available to meet the needs of about 2,600

hospitals, clinics and cancer centers across the country. About 36,000 units of red blood cells and 7,000 units of platelets are needed daily in the U.S. Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, less than 10 percent actually do. The Red Cross, which provides about 40 percent of blood in the U.S., hopes to change that.

The organization is seeking new donors in the new year to step up to help meet the needs of patients battling cancer and other conditions or disorders, individuals undergoing surgery and victims of accidents or violent acts.

Donating blood is a simple, safe process. All you have to do is register, take a mini medical history test, donate, and then accept free refreshments. A single donation from a single patient can help more than one person.

Give blood. Don’t wait for a disaster. Someone needs blood now. A single car accident victim may need up to 100 pints of blood to survive.

Eligible blood and platelet donors are urged to schedule a donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS. Use #NationalBloodDonorMonth and #GiveBlood to share on social media.

The Town of Estes Park’s free Christmas tree drop-off site is open to local residents 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Monday-Friday, through Jan. 10. The drop-off is located at the east entrance of the Fairgrounds off Community Drive; follow the signs to the fenced drop-off location. Trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel and other decorations. No wreaths, garland, artificial trees or tree stands will be accepted. Trees must be dropped during the specified hours in the identified area. Dropping trees after hours or in other locations at the Fairgrounds will be considered illegal dumping and may be subject to a fine. This service is free of charge to local residents. County’s last flood-affected trail finally re-opens BOULDER COUNTY Anne U. White Trail, located just west of Boulder on Pinto Drive, and its expanded parking lot and trailhead are once again open for use. They re-opened to the public in December 2019 after being significantly damaged by the September 2013 flood.

The Anne U. White Trail is a unique natural surface hiking trail about 1.75 miles in length that traverses up a narrow canyon by hopscotching back and forth across Fourmile Canyon Creek. www.mmacmonthly.com

The trail is located west of North Boulder near Lee Hill Road. It is designated for pedestrian use only, bikes and horses are not allowed. Dogs on leashes are allowed.

Because of safety and access concerns, it was the last trail in the county’s system affected by the disaster that remained closed.

The restored and expanded trailhead features a new parking lot that increases the available parking spots from five to 29, including on acces-

sible space. On-street parking is limited to three designated parking spots on Pinto Drive.

A port-a-potty is located near the trailhead while a permanent restroom is scheduled to be built in 2020.

A grand opening celebration is planned for sometime in the spring and will be announced as details are confirmed.

Old-School Funk, Soul Funky soul-jazz band continues touring after ‘scorching’ 20-year career

NEDERLAND he New Mastersounds have been delighting audiences with its infectious brand of funky soul-jazz since they formed in Leeds, UK, in 1999. Though they have collaborated over the years with such musical luminaries as Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Corinne Bailey Rae, Art Neville, Quantic, and Lou Donaldson, they are at their best on stage as a tightly-packed quartet— bass, drums, guitar and Hammond organ—firing scorching funk grooves off each other and feeding off the energy of the joyful dancers in the front row.

Catch the band in action, Jan. 18, at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Dr., with Downtown Abby & The Echoes as the final show of its six-night Colorado Ski Tour. Doors open at 7:30 and the show begins at 9 p.m. Tickets are $20. “Ski tour is one of our favorites every year,” the band said on its social media. “We play at intimate mountain venues and often get a chance to ski with the fans. People even fly in for a show or two to come ski.”

In the late 1990s, guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts was promoting a club night in Leeds called “The Cooker.”

When it moved into a new venue with a second floor in 1999, there was space and the opportunity to put a live band together to complement the DJ sets. Simon Allen and Roberts had played together as The Mastersounds, though with a different bassist and no organ. Through friends and the intimate nature of the Leeds music scene, Pete Shand and Bob Birch were added on bass and Hammond respectively, and The New Mastersounds were born. Though it was raw, and more of a boogaloo sound at first, it was powerful from the start.

From the band’s inception, its members have wholeheartedly embraced the “old school” label. Their sound is rooted deeply in classic soul jazz, boogaloo. Fast-forward 19 years, and the band’s recorded catalogue boasts 24 more 7” singles, 13 studio albums, three live albums, one remix album and three compilation albums, released variously in UK, Japan and the United States—where they continue to tour extensively. Joe Tatton, another veteran of the Leeds scene, joined back in 2007, replacing Bob Birch on organ and piano.

Downtown Abby & The Echoes capture the spirit of “old soul” while emphasizing its youthful energy and fresh songwriting. Taking influence from the work of the titans of soul, blues, and southern rock, the Asheville, North Carolina-based band brings its fresh take on soul to an ever-growing fan base.

Festival celebrates winter, music, beer GOLDEN

UllrGrass Music & Beer Festival returns to Parfet Park in downtown Golden for its sixth year, Jan. 2426. The three-day festival showcases bluegrass talent from across Colorado including Head For the Hills, Coral Creek and the UllrGrass All Stars featuring Drew Emmitt, BLUEAdam Aijala, Allie Kral, Andy Thorn GRASS and Greg Garrison.

Musical tribute to Austin raises funds for mental health resource

Leftover Salmon released Songs You’ve Left Unsung in November as a tribute to dear friend Jeff Austin in his memory. The song, released at Backline.care, was penned by bassist Greg Garrison. All proceeds from the sale of it are donated to Backline.

NOTEWORTHY The Drunken Hearts - Wheels of the City • February 14: Valentine’s Day at The Caribou Room • 9 p.m.

T

he Drunken Hearts new album, Wheels of the City, released in October 2019 on LoHi Records, delivers tales of adventure, love, risk, and realization. The band wanted to try something new for this album: to create and record a new song each day, and continue that model until an entire album was realized. The result is eleven full-fledged, living, breathing, musical time capsules that make up Wheels of the City. The album was produced by Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth, recorded at Silo Sound Studios in Denver, and mastered by Jim Wilson.

“I loved working on this record with The Drunken Hearts,” Carbone said. “Andrew sent me the acoustic demos of the songs and I sketched out the arrangements and instrumentation. The band essentially learned the songs and added their ideas the day we tracked them… We did a song a day and except for some vocal overdubs, solo replacements and the strings and horns, that was how it all went down. I’d never worked that way before. It was an amazing stretch of hyper-creativity. I’m very proud of Wheels of the City!”

Mixing the band’s “mountain-spirit” with the “twang of the south,” the five-man band features acoustic guitarist and powerhouse lead singer, Andrew McConathy. He is originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, and is known for his compelling songwriting and “distinct and expressive” vocals. Joining him are pedal steel, Dobro, and lap steel player Cody Russell; electric guitarist and vocalist Kory Montgomery; bassist Jon McCartan; and drummer Alex Johnson.

Special guests include Carbone on piano, organ, violin, backing vocals and percussion and Sheryl Renee on vocals.

The album features a horn section— Sam Hoyt on trumpet, Sam Burris on trombone, John Devivo on french horn, Jay Rattman on alto sax, flute and clarinet—on the title track and “Passchendaele” brings in a string section along with Renee’s accompanying vocals to create a unique texture. The strings include Stephanie Bell and Chris Souza on violin, Marsha Cahn on viola and David Moulton on cello. Jay Rattman arranged the music for both the strings and horns.

Nature’s Art Work

Photographer captures ‘moments in nature’ GILPIN COUNTY he inspiring images of award-winning Denver photographer Roger Doak are featured in the “CAPTURED – Moments in Nature” Exhibit in the meeting room at the Gilpin County Library. Jan. 20-March 13. It is free and open to the public during normal library hours.

The photographer was born in upstate New York and moved to Colorado as a young boy. Living in the scenic beauty of the Gunnison area he developed a profound appreciation of nature. His enjoyment of nature proved to be the impetus of his passion for photography.

In 2005, he received two first place finishes in a photo competition judged by esteemed photographer, John Fielder. This recognition, and with encouragement from friends and family, inspired Roger to start his business: Roger Doak Photography. Since then, his photography has been acknowledged with a number of awards. Roger’s clients include hospitals, galleries, corporations and government.

Doak’s photography celebrates nature’s art work: majestic landscapes, micro elements, and stately wildlife. He believes an excellent photo needs to be technically accurate; lighting, color, form, and composition. In addition to technical precision, he also understands an exceptional photo captures a unique moment that engages the viewer’s eye and provides an emotional attachment.

Achieving his objectives allowed Doak to create the inspiring images seen in his library show. Ultimately, his goal is to show and share nature’s majestic and peaceful moments in his photography.

Gallery hosts exhibits, seeks entries CENTRAL CITY

The Gilpin County Arts Association presents “Winter Advisory: A Show of Winter Paintings” by Virginia Unseld, at its Washington Hall Gallery, 117 Eureka St., through Feb. 1. The free gallery is open Thursday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Gilpin County-based Unseld GALLERY has been painting the western EVENTS landscape for 40 years. Her work is “about the act of joyous markmaking as much as about the subject.” She is primarily a plein air painter and has won many awards, including at this year’s Central City Plein Air and Fairplay Plein Air events. She also was judge for the 2019 Georgetown Plein Air festival.

Clay studio hosts variety of classes GILPIN COUNTY The Gilpin Clay Studio at the Gilpin County Community Center, and its instructors Steve Briggs and Gabrielle Gewirtz, provide several opportunities to begin or continue learning about pottery POTTERY and be “brave with clay” in early 2020.

Briggs teaches a couple of eight-week sessions focusing on bowls on Wednesdays, Jan. 22-March 11, and Saturdays, Jan. 18-March 7, from 9:30 a.m.-noon.

Experience in working with clay is helpful, but all levels can be accommodated. Each session is $120 for residents or $140 for non-residents. The fee includes class instruction, glazes, firings and extra studio time.

Participants throw bowls with particular attention to the form and how that relates to its surface treatment.

They will practice “throwing off the hump,” and try various ways of trimming to complete the piece. Hand-built bowls, with emphasis on texturing the surface and creating a hand-built foot, will also be made.

Festival features chili contests, music, beer, more

elebrate the winter season while sampling beers, browsing vendors and enjoying live music at the family-friendly Estes Park Winter Festival, Jan . 18-19, noon-4 p.m., at the Estes Park Event Center. This year, the event features two chili cook-offs and includes food, silent disco, photo booth, kids inflatables, face-painting and more.

Chili cook-offs are featured each day. A Chili Appreciation Society International CookOff for individuals and teams is Saturday, noon-4 p.m. It is open to everyone with a pot, a stove, and a great chili recipe. There are Red Chili and Open/Green Chilli categories.

Teams are encouraged to create a theme for their chili team including costumes, table decorations, and “pandering to the crowd.” The entry fee is $15 and supports a local non-profit.

The first ever Town of Estes Park Chili Cook-Off exclusively designed for local nonprofit organizations is Sunday. The Town of Estes Park has collaborated with the Estes Park Nonprofit Resource Center to offer an opportunity for local non-profit organizations to promote themselves and win a donation of up to $1,000.

Live music and a silent disco with DJ are also included both days of the event. On Saturday, The Who Do’s, an experienced eight-piece “that will have you grooving the whole show,” is featured. The Boulder-based band plays R&B, soul and blues.

Sunday’s music includes “dynamite” rockabilly trio Dixie Leadfoot and Fort Collinsbased blues band The Blues DoGS. Dixie Leadfoot is fronted by Suzannah Harris, who sings and plays upright bass. The dynamite country and oldies rock band has been performing in the Denver region and beyond since 2012. The Blues DoGS show band is a diverse group of doctors, lawyers, business owners, teachers, and laborers who have a passion for blues music. They’ve been performing a creative mix of blues, rock, funk, and R&B classics for more than 20 years.

Each day, enjoy unlimited, two-ounce beer samples from local brewers with the free tasting glass provided at entry. The 2020 event features a People’s Choice Award with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

It’s a great way to learn about the tea infusions, as well, and how some ingredients can really make a big difference in your dining experience.”

During the dinner, which is limited to 20 people, MTN Prime employees and Shultz will speak about the dishes, their ingredients and the wine paired with them. “We’re doing it on Tuesday so folks can get out midweek, plus this wouldn’t work on a weekend. We couldn’t provide the level of service. We want everyone to get our full attention,” Burkey said. “It provides a great environment where people can mingle but also ask questions and hopefully just have a great time.

Nordic centers, local backcountry offer range of experiences for all abilities PEAK TO PEAK REGION n Colorado, a pair of cross-country or telemark skis can transport just about anyone from their everyday life into a peaceful forest environment of snow-laden trees, white meadows and trails along frozen creeks. A hidden world of winter beauty and sensational settings, without the crowds, can be unveiled throughout the Peak to Peak Region and nearby Clear Creek, Grand and Summit counties, by visiting the region’s Nordic centers and easily-accessible backcountry trails. There are also ranches, clubs and nonprofit organizations that maintain networks of cross-country trails throughout the area.

For residents and visitors to the region there are no shortage of places to get out and put a pair of free-heeled skis, and their bodies, to work. Winter is a spectacular time to visit the area’s forests, wilderness areas, state park and Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s also the best time to visit a Nordic center for great trails and plenty of additional activities and amenities close at hand. Many even allow dogs.

Backcountry options abound throughout the region with only a few mentioned here. In the Estes Park area, private lodges and resorts offer groomed trails for cross-country skiing and thousands of accessible acres are available in Rocky Mountain National Park. Non-profit Rocky Mountain Conservancy and other Estes Park-based outfitters provide guided backcountry treks.

The Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forests and the Indian Peaks, James Peak and Mount Evans wilderness areas—which run from the National Park south to Clear Creek County and from western Boulder County to Grand County—provide a lifetime of backcountry skiing options.

Brainard Lake Recreation Area is one of the most popular places for winter recreation in the area.

Fees are not charged during the winter and winter recreationists can park at the Brainard Gateway Trailhead to access cross-country ski and snowshoe trails.

Until April 30, dogs are restricted to Brainard Lake and Lefthand Park Reservoir Roads. Huts, yurts and cabins in the area are also accessible to skiers.

There are more than 12,000 acres of forest, rocky peaks and aspen-rimmed meadows with miles of trails for winter sports enthusiasts at Golden Gate Canyon State Park in Gilpin County while Clear Creek County offers several outstanding backcountry options including Old Squaw Pass Road, South Chicago Creek Trail, Echo Lake, Bakerville-Loveland Trail, Mount Evans Scenic Byway and Argentine Railroad Grade Trail.

Check conditions and consult the Colorado Avalanche Information Center at avalanche.state.co.us before heading out as conditions can change hourly. Skiers must also be prepared for quick changes in weather and exhaustion. Skills and gear to handle the risks are essential. Always dress in layers with insulating, waterproof clothing, protect your eyes and skin with sunglasses and sunscreen and carry water.

One of the best ways to try out the sport is the head to a Nordic center for well-groomed trails, rental gear and expert instruction. Nordic centers are plentiful throughout Grand and Summit counties and Eldora Mountain Resort near Nederland offers exceptional Nordic trails. Avoid backcountry hazards, get on the snow quickly, try additional snow sports and have their top amenities close at hand at these world-class facilities.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort is a nationallyrecognized, premier Nordic center. It offers nearly 120km of trails in the pristine and private Ranch Creek Valley at the base of the Continental Divide.

The YMCA of the Rockies’ Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center offers more than 120km of world-class Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking trails accommodating everyone from firsttime participants to elite racers. Dogs on leashes can join guests on some trails. It also offers ice skating, tubing, dog sledding and sleigh rides.

The 19th Annual Snow Mountain Ranch Classic race is Jan. 11, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and features two classic-only races. The 36th Annual Snow Mountain Stampede, March 14-15, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., includes 25K Freestyle, 25K Classic, 50K Classic and 25K Freestyle and Classic Ranch Hand races. There are free 2K Kids Fun Races both days.

Grand Lake Nordic Center, run by the Grand Lake Metropolitan Recreation District, features scenic views of Rocky Mountain National Park with beginner to advanced terrain on 35km of classic

and skate skiing trails. It is a full-service destination with rentals, lessons, retail shop and soup kitchen.

There is also a free tubing hill open to all. Beginner to advanced lessons are $25 for classic or skate ski.

The Grand Lake Classic Race, Jan. 19, features a 1.5 or 3 km kids race at 9:30 a.m. and an 8 km and 16 km race at 10 a.m. Visit the Nordic Center with your furry friends for Romp and Stomp, Feb. 16, 10 a.m.-noon, for a fundraising event in support of the Grand County Pet Pals Granby Ranch, 20 miles west of Winter Park, features 25km of cross-country skiing trails on two Nordic networks. The resort is designed for skiers and riders of all ages and abilities.

The Grand Nordic Ski Club offers Free Ski Lessons to everyone this season at Grand Lake Nordic Center, Jan. 12. The group also hosts the 6th Annual Ranch2Ranch Cross Country Ski Trek from Snow Mountain Ranch to Granby Ranch, Feb. 8. Visit grandnordic.org to learn more.

Summit County is also home to several crosscountry skiing options including Breckenridge Nordic Ski Center, Gold Run Nordic Center, Frisco Nordic Center and Keystone Nordic Center. All are currently open and offer world-class trails.

The 50th Annual Frisco Gold Rush, Feb. 8, is the longest running Nordic event in Colorado,and consists of classic and skate races open to skiers of all ages and abilities. The 5th Annual Frisco BrewSki is a fun and zany costumed beer fest on skis at the Frisco Adventure Park and Frisco Nordic Center, March 14, 2-5 p.m.

Eldora Mountain Resort Nordic Center near Nederland in Boulder County offers 40km of groomed classic and skate trails through alpine meadow and pine forest. It also provides crosscountry and Telemark ski lessons while the Nordic lodge offers food and rentals.

Many other options exist outside the resorts by using the many outfitters in the region that lead trips and still more that rent and sell equipment.

To save some money and check out a variety of locations, the Colorado Cross Country Ski Association offers a transferable Punch Pass for $150 at coloradocrosscountry.com that includes more than 18 trail passes at 10 resorts—including Breckenridge Nordic, Gold Run Nordic, Keystone Nordic, Snow Mountain Ranch and more—plus great lodging, rentals, and tour discounts at other resorts.
