Celebrate recreation month, Colorado’s statehood
FRONT RANGE Summer is here, which means it’s time to get out and discover the great things happening at your local parks and recreation centers. This July, explore the undiscovered roles of local parks and recreation during Park and Recreation Month. While playgrounds, recreation centers, sports leagues and summer camps are a few of the things that come to mind when we think of parks and rec, it is so much more than that. In July, take the time to learn about
those less-known park and recreation offerings like science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming; senior programs; innovative health and wellness opportunities; community celebrations; outdoor education; flood mitigation; maintenance; and more. Redefine how you think about your local parks and rec, and uncover a lifetime of discovery. Estes Valley Recreation and Park District celebrates Park and Recreation Month with activities throughout July on the mild side of recre-
ation. A variety of fun activities are planned for residents of all ages and abilities—including dive-in movies at the Estes Valley Community Center, Ice Cream Day, scavenger hunts every Friday, and a photo contest. Park and recreation districts and programs in Clear Creek, Gilpin, Boulder and Larimer counties as well as in Nederland, Estes Park and Lyons provide countless ways to recognize the month. Get online or stop by your local recreation center or office to find out about the many ways they serve their communities and visitors. Spending time outdoors reduces stress and improves mental health. Exposure to nature improves creativity, decreases stress hormones, and calms aggression. Take time in July to find new ways to be active and enjoy our mountain surroundings.
Colorado Day - August 1 On Aug. 1, 1876, President Grant made Colorado the “Centennial State” and each year “Colorado Day” is celebrated with free admission to all state history museums, free access to all Colorado State Parks and other perks. At the History Colorado Center celebrate Colorado’s 143rd birthday by make adobe bricks, do make-andtake crafts and see actors and reenactors. There will be a Farm Fresh tent, wildlife education table, botanicals and more. At the Center for Women’s History at the Byers-Evans House Museum, there will be free guided tours once an hour on the half-hour from 10:30 am to 3:30 p.m.. Other museums with free admission on Colorado Day include: El Pueblo History Museum in Pueblo, Fort Garland Museum in Fort Garland, Fort Vasquez Museum in Platteville, Healy House & Dexter Cabin in Leadville, Trinidad History Museum in Trinidad, and Ute Indian Museum in Montrose. Additional Colorado museums offer a free day to celebrate Colorado’s statehood including The American Museum of Western Art, 1727 Tremont Place in Denver and The Molly Brown House Museum. Colorado Parks and Wildlife celebrates Colorado’s acceptance into statehood with free access to all Colorado State Parks, Aug. 3. Entrance fees are waived, but fishing and camping require a valid license and permit. Numerous local businesses also get in on the celebration with special offers and freebies, Aug. 1. Sport shooting management plan finalized DATELINE Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests Supervisor Monte Williams signed the final decision on the Recreational Sport Shooting Management Project in June. The goal of the project is to provide safer opportunities for all forest visitors by identifying where recreational sport shooting is unsuitable. The decision protects public safety through restrictions on recreational sport shooting on 226,113 acres of the 1.4 million acre Arapaho and Roowww.mmacmonthly.com
sevelt National Forests. Other areas of the forest and around Colorado remain available for recreational sport shooting when following all rules and regulations. This decision will not affect lawful hunting with a firearm in areas where it is currently allowed. Identified unsuitable areas, not already closed to recreational sport shooting, will not be closed until public shooting ranges are open as part of the decision. Only minor changes were made from the draft decision to the final
decision, including some clarifying language and the addition of 539 unsuitable acres identified through the objection process. Additional information, including the final decision and map, is available online. A phased implementation plan will be coordinated with partners as public shooting areas are constructed. PICKIN’ TIME Bluegrass festival continues to evolve in fourth year
ESTES PARK nowygrass, “Estes Park’s very own music festival down by the river,” returns, July 19-20, to Baldwin Park, Snowy Peaks Winery and The Barrel. The event—presented by local artist and musician Nadine Sekerez’s Upstream Enterprises—features local bluegrass and Americana bands, food vendors, artists and artisans, kids activities along with wine and beer. It’s also dog-friendly. The festival began in 2016 when Candice Mohr of Snowy Peaks Winery, a supporter of live music in Estes Park, wanted to highlight their 10th anniversary. As a “thank you” to the community for supporting her winery for a decade, Mohr held a small festival and hosted Ran Off the Rooster, ReinTarnation and Follow the Fox. The event continues to grow and evolve in its fourth year under the guidance of Sekerez. The two-day event now features both free and ticketed concerts in three locations. Friday kicks off with a no-cover show on the Backyard Stage at Snowy Peaks Winery, 292 Moraine Ave., at 4:30 p.m. with The Jamesons Duo and KC Groves & Dusty Rider. Performances on the SnowyGrass Stage in Baldwin Park, 271 Ivy St., begin at 6:30 p.m. with Pete Wernick of Hot Rize, and Joan Wernick. Hunker Down will follow with a sound they call “Rocky Mountain Folk-n-Roll.” Music in the park concludes with an energetic performance by Austin’s 2019 Grammy-nominated Bluegrass band Wood & Wire. Saturday festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a musical activity for children and the Wernick Method Jam Workshop, which is included with admission. Musical performances begin at 11 a.m. with the duo, Dahlby & Nadine, followed by Jason Hicks & KC Groves, Ran Off The Rooster, The Cody Sisters, and Pete & Joan Wernick. The Blue Canyon Boys, winners of the 2008 Telluride Bluegrass Festival band contest, brings the main stage performances to a grand finale at 5 p.m. The music continues from 7-10 p.m. at The Barrel, 251 Moraine Ave., for a no-cover show of bluegrass, blues and Americana from Denver-based Bot-

Clear Creek acoustic festival moves to July IDAHO SPRINGS Celebrate the heart of summer with two days of mountain music, July 19-20, at the laid-back Clear Creek RapidGrass Music Festival. The acoustic- and bluegrass-oriented event, held at the Idaho Springs Ball Field Complex, 101 Idaho Springs Road, welcomes nationallyBLUEtouring performers alongside some GRASS of Colorado’s most talented players. In addition to main stage performances, free workshops and small concerts take place on a second stage each day. “What separates the Rapidgrass Festival is that it’s not like a big-name recognition scene or scenester party,” festival founder and co-organizer Mark Morris said. “It’s a listening festival and it features people who are virtuosic on their instruments rather than focused on just selling tickets.” Headliners at this year’s festival include renowned acoustic musicians Mike Marshall and Darol Anger—known for their work with David Grisman— and locally-based RapidGrass. Rhythm Future Project, New England’s premier Gypsy jazz group featuring violinist Jason Anick and gypsy guitar legend Olli Soikkeli also perform. Bands coming to the festival from out of state include Utah-based Pixie & the Partygrass Boys, Arizona’s Sugar & the Mint and Billy Cardine from North Carolina. Colorado acts on the bill include The Lonesome Days, Gypsy Cattle Drive, Sister Sarah & Friends, The Sweet Lillies, Avenhart, Kind Mountain Band, Heavy Diamond Ring and Turkeyfoot. Rapidgrass has also teamed up with the La Roche Bluegrass Festival in France to bring the winner from Europe’s largest bluegrass band contest to Rapidgrass Festival. This year’s winners, Often Herd, are coming from the United Kingdom to perform. Additionally, Anger, Marshall, Alex Johnstone, Timmy Morris and Silas Herman are Artists-At-

Festival organizers are most excited about this year’s date change. “In the previous years we have bounced around June quite a bit of trying to find a good place, but the weather has always been poor,” Mark said. “We are excited to move the festival… to hopefully catch some of the summer sun.” Stem Ciders and Tommyknocker Brewery got together this year to create an exclusive “Rapidgrass Rattler” that will be served exclusively at the event. Parking is limited at the festival site. Overflow parking is nearby, but requires a short walk to the festival grounds. There is no shuttle service. Tentonly camping is available on-site for $20. The Charles Sawtelle Memorial Mountain Jam, known as “The Charles,” is named for beloved Hot Rize guitarist, Charles Sawtelle, who helped start the event in 1989. After his passing in 1999, the event was named in his memory. BLUE This year’s 31st annual familyGRASS friendly mini-festival, July 21, 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at the Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main St., features Che Apalache, The Lonesome Days, Avenhart and artist-at-large Bridget Law. Che Apalache is a string band based in Buenos Aires that combines bluegrass with Latin American styles. The Lonesome Days is a highenergy, modern bluegrass act from Denver blending heartfelt songwriting and powerful vocals with precise instrumentation. Avenhart is a Denver folk band that blends bluegrass with soul, Americana, pop and indie rock. ter a decade of touring and three studio albums with legendary jam band Leftover Salmon, banjoist Andy Thorn released his first solo recording in eight years on June 21 at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. To make the album, he called in his oldest friends, who now happen to be in meteoric acoustic bands, including Mandolin Orange, Town Mountain, Leftover Salmon and Jon Stickley Trio. Written and produced by Andy Thorn, Frontiers Like These, features 11 original tracks including four instrumental numbers and seven vocal tracks featuring lush harmonies by Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange. The lyrics and soundscapes capture a snapshot of American life from North Carolina to the Rocky Mountains and beyond. Inevitably, the album references climate change and economic inequality. The album also features Jon Stickley on guitar, Town Mountain’s Bobby Britt on fiddle, and Big Fat Gap’s Miles Andrews on bass, the decades of Carolina-based picking friendships are palpable from the first notes. Frontiers Like These was recorded in the musicians’ hometown of Chapel Hill at The Rubber Room. It was done over the holidays, so everyone was back in town visiting family. The recording sessions “felt like a Carolina bluegrass family reunion,” but most of these songs were actually written at 7300 feet above sea level, in Thorn’s high-altitude Colorado home. The album includes four new original instrumentals and seven new vocal tunes including ones co-written with Vince Herman, Charles Humphries, Ryan Cavinaugh, and Cecelia May Thorn. With exciting instrumentation and lush harmonies, these songs paint a high-altitude view of American joys and sorrows — particularly climate change and economic inequality. BLUES Longmont’s Mojomama, which has been on the Colorado music scene for 14 years, performs its own style of blues by mixing traditional blues styles with a “bit of funk, a splash of jazz, a spoonful of rock n’ roll and topping it off with a zest of female lead vocals.” Mojomama performances excite crowds with “hip shaking grooves and undeniable melodies.” The band was a semi-finalist at The International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2018 and 2019 as representatives of the Colorado Blues Society. The Colorado Blues Society has recognized the band with awards for “Best Self-produced CD” in 2015 and “Favorite Female Vocalist” in 2015 and 2018. Singing extraordinary stories Opera company’s world-class productions return to Central City
CENTRAL CITY xperience the unforgettable at the internationally acclaimed Central City Opera Festival, July 6-Aug. 6. This year, main stage productions include Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, which opens July 6, and the Colorado premiere of Billy Budd by Benjamin Britten, which opens July 13. Both world-class performances will be brought to life in the historic 550-seat Central City Opera House, 124 Eureka St. Last performed by Central City Opera in 2010, Madama Butterfly is one of the best-loved operas in the repertoire and regularly ranks among the top 10 most produced operas nationwide. The plot traces the title character’s life from marriage to an American naval lieutenant at 15 years old, determined motherhood, to an ultimate reclamation of self through her culture’s lethal code of honor. Puccini is known for exoticism—many of his most famous operas represent cultures outside his native Italy, spanning Japan, China and the American West. Billy Budd is a swashbuckling and thought-provoking tale of morality and memory. The compositions of Benjamin Britten have been an artistic compass for General and Artistic Director Pat Pearce during his 22-year tenure. He aims to produce the composer’s entire canon at Central City Opera and Billy Budd is a major landmark along the process. Britten’s work is considered a turning point in music history, and his visceral exploration of morality and human experience resonates with contemporary audiences. “This year’s Billy Budd production is the largest show ever to be performed on the Central City Opera stage,” Pearce said. “Director Ken Cazan is returning for his 18th season with Central City Opera to bring another Benjamin Britten production to life. This production of Billy Budd features a score that was specifically adapted for Central City Opera in partnership with the Britten-Pears Foundation, Boosey & Hawkes, London and Maestro Steuart Bedford and is not to be missed.” In addition to the two main stage productions, audiences have the opportunity to see two rarely performed works together as part of the Double Bill: The Blessed Damozel and Litanies to the Black Virgin. The festival season also incudes Opening Night Celebrations, featuring a behind-the-scenes look at Madama Butterfly or Billy Budd, along with cocktails and dinner preceding the performance; and Lunch & a Song, 30-minute solo performances preceded by lunch. Unique, historic gallery hosts juried show CENTRAL CITY
Gilpin County Arts Associations' 72nd Annual Juried Art Show, the oldest continuously running annual juried art show in Colorado, opened in June and continues to hang in one of the state’s most unique galleries through Aug. 2. The exhibition of more than 50 artists at the historic Washington Hall gallery, 117 Eureka St., is free and open to everyone. It is accessible daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass and jewelry are available for viewing and purchase. Colorado artists judge the entries. GILPIN COUNTY elebrate Gilpin County and its residents when the Gilpin County Fair returns for its 27th year, July 12-14, to the Gilpin County Fairgrounds, 250 Norton Dr. Perennially popular rides, contests and events—including the Gilpin Gourmet Contest, Bulls & Beads Rodeo and Sunday morning pancake breakfast—return again this year, but there are also many new additions to the family-friendly event. The popular free fair, which drew 5,500 attendees last year, also features an array of games, attractions and competitions. This year, the fair begins with the “Fired Up Friday” kick-off party. Enjoy a community potluck, chili cook-off, goat happy hour, paint party, free rides, glow-in-the-dark capture the flag and a fire dancer from 6-9 p.m. The Gilpin Archwood 4-H Club presents a new Brain Freeze Contest and this year’s King and Queen will be named during the Royalty Presentation. COAL CREEK CANYON “Get yer burly on” at the Coal Creek Canyon Improvement Association’s annual Mountain Fest, Aug. 3, noon-5 p.m., at the CCCIA Community Hall, 31528 Hwy. 72. The “silly little sister to Frozen Dead Guy Days” celebrates all things “mountain” and features outlandish FESTIVAL activities and contests, mountainthemed obstacle course, live music by Knucklehorn, artisans, vendors, children’s activities and some “utterly hilarious merriment” for mountain folks. The event, which organizers say “becomes bigger and better each year,” helps fund the Coal Creek Canyon Park and Recreation District. Brewer achieves dreams in Nederland
By Jeffrey V. Smith NEDERLAND From the moment Chris Marchio began brewing at his college home in Vermont, he fell in love with the process and has dreamt of opening his own brewery. That dream comes true this Independence Day. Knotted Root Brewing Company, 250 N. Caribou St., a new craft brewery in Nederland, officially opens its doors to the public, July 4-7, during its Grand Opening weekend. It’s been more than seven years, but Marchio’s journey through the brewing industry has all been leading up to this project. After eight years in Vermont, where he fell in love with hops and rural, farm-house-style breweries on dirt roads in old barns, Marchio’s quest to gain the knowledge that he lacked led him to the Brewing and Fermentation Science program at Central Washington University. After his formal education, he continued learning and climb up the industry ladder with an internship at Roslyn Brewing followed by a job as brewer at Anderson Valley Brewing where he developed commercial brewing techniques. In 2014, he was lured to Colorado with the prospect of opening a brewery and joined the team at Denver’s Fiction Beer as assistant brewer. He was given the freedom to experiment with recipes and techniques and soon gained attention for being one of the first to introduce hazy, New Englandstyle IPAs to Colorado. He eventually accepted the Head Brewer position at Joyride Brewing, where he continued to make a name for himself by creating progressive, unfiltered hoppy ales. His reputation and connections in the industry soon allowed Marchio to see his vision of having his own rural, farm-house-style brewery, that is also a destination, come to full realization. “In order to do that… I have hooked up with people over my time in the beer industry who believed in me, who are willing to support my vision. Having their help allowed me to do everything I wanted to do in terms of size and scope and design and everything,” he said. From his home in Denver, he stared up at the mountain where, beneath the jagged cliffs, he found a home in Nederland. “We lucked out and found this old garage that has this barn-ish feel, off a dirt road and on the Peak to Peak with beautiful views. I envisioned it right when I came in and the stars kind of aligned on that. We just think this place has character and that the vibe and product, hopefully, will speak for itself and feed off the weirdness and coolness of Nederland.” According to Marchio, Knotted Root Brewing—named as a subtle nod to The Phish from Vermont, will continue his brewing vision and focus on unfiltered IPAs, Rustic farm-house ales, Kölsch- and pilsner-styles, as well as experimental sours and stouts. The brewery has a 10-barrel system and 20-barrel vessels which will be dedicated to canning by the end of summer. There is also a barrel-aging area featuring wine barrels exclusive to Knotted Root.

The brewery’s tap room, Marchio explains, will be a comfortable place to hang out. “I am kind of making it seem like my living room,” he said. “We are going to have Oriental rugs, local art work and various musical posters I’ve collected over the years. We are also going to have a whole section of framed records that were recorded at the Caribou Ranch and highlight that history, and Prince’s Purple Rain record, because I love Prince… I think the beer is going to be really awesome and reflective of our collective energies and, in the spirit of Nederland, I think this is going to be a great place to just kind of chill.” Marchio, of course, is not doing everything himself. Chris Kline is the tap room manager and former Upslope Brewing brewer Jordan Lanter is the assistant brewer. “We have never brewed together before. It just came together like most of this project, on its own where you put the energy and intuition out there. It seems to have come back to me, which is nice.” Marchio said. The brewer can’t wait to introduce Knotted Root and his beers to the town. “We’re so excited to be a part of this Nederland community and part of the sort of growth that I think will benefit the town and provide jobs and allow artist to display their crafts and allow me to do my art and just work with other places with food to get my beer there,” Marchio explained. “We’ve already brewed a beer with Jeff at Very Nice [Brewing], so we are about community. That’s what we’re about.” The new brewery is dog-friendly and familyfriendly. It will be open Thursdays-Sundays and will soon host live acoustic music on Saturday’s from 4-7 p.m. Food can be brought in and charcuterie will be offered. Arrive early to get the guild’s baked goods, candies, peanut brittle and jellies. The “pie line” forms well before doors open and treats disappear quickly. Treasures among the gently used books, housewares and “white elephant” items go fast as well. Classic rock band Loose Change returns to the outdoor stage this year along with other local musicians. Inside, dulcimer music will again be featured. Food includes hot dogs or smoked brisket sandwiches with baked beans, coleslaw and watermelon. It is available beginning at 10:30 a.m. There is also a medallion hunt for children. Participants visit five guild booths and ask for a medallion. Once five medallions are collected, a teacher at the 130-year-old Bunce School House will award a free children’s book as a prize. esidents of the Peak to Peak Region only get to comfortably eat and drink outside a few months of the year, so when the weather’s right, the area’s many noteworthy outdoor dining options fill up with people seeking a relaxing, fresh-air, outdoor dining experience. Now that summer is officially here—after a long winter and wet spring—it’s time to take advantage of the season and enjoy the beautiful weather whenever possible. That means exploring as many al fresco options as much as possible during the highcountry’s short window of opportunity. All along the Peak to Peak Region, from Central City to Estes Park, exceptional outdoor dining options can be found. From making the most of a beautiful day to dining with your dog to a special night out, there are plenty of patios and decks to visit. While most restaurants and bars have some type of outdoor space for their patrons, especially during warm weather months, some stand out from the rest. A few noteworthy options of the many magnificent mountain-based establishments are included here. This is simply a starting point to discovering great outdoor dining in the region. Don’t limit yourself to this list; get out and explore.
Central City/Black Hawk Beginning in the south, the best bet for outdoor dining in Central City is Dostal Alley Brewpub & Casino, 116 Main St. Offering small-batch, awardwinning craft beer and a full menu with an Italian focus, the long-standing locals favorite provides an outdoor seating area on a patio in the back of its historic building. In Black Hawk, Buffawhale Coffee & Tea Co., 135 S. Clear Creek St., offers a a variety of breakfast burritos, sandwiches and baked goodies to enjoy in a small outdoor seating area. Gilpin County Roy’s Last Shot, located on the Peak to Peak Byway, 17268 Hwy. 119, is welcoming to locals, families, bikers and even dogs. Dine outside in a large dog- and family-friendly picnic area, on a porch or under a gazebo to take in the surrounding foothill views. The restaurant and full-service bar offer breakfast, burgers, pizza and much more. Coal Creek Canyon/Highway 72 At 8,888 feet above sea level, the Wondervu Café, 33492 Hwy. 72, offers an authentic Mexican menu and full bar. An outdoor deck provides an eating area with views and mountain breezes. The Last Stand Tavern, 32138 Hwy. 72, a fullservice bar and restaurant, has a menu featuring American comfort foods; a bar with wine, craft beer and a wide range of specialty cocktails; and a large deck featuring unobstructed views of the canyon. The deck also hosts live music on Saturdays, 4-8 p.m., and Sundays, 4-7 p.m.

Nederland There are many options for dining and drinking outdoors in Nederland. Most establishments have some sort of outside seating to enable patrons to enjoy the fresh air and warmer temperature in summer. A popular outdoor gathering spot is at Crosscut Pizzeria and Taphouse, 4 E. 1st St. Serving woodfired, artisan-inspired, hand-crafted pizza and select craft beer along with wine on tap and in the bottle, the restaurant is family-friendly and offers a welcoming patio with views of Boulder Creek, Downtown Nederland and the surrounding mountains Salto Coffee Works, 112 E 2nd St., calls itself a café for the community. They roast their own craft coffee on-site and serve a delicious menu of food, beer and wine. The business is connected to the adjacent Tin Shed Sports by a large, inviting patio with trees, a fire pit and plenty of seating. Live music is hosted on the patio on select Fridays. Grab a pint of craft beer or hand-made cocktail and some wings and head out the back door to enjoy the mountain and Nederland views on the spacious deck at James Peak Brewery & Smokehouse, 70 E. First St. Their meats are smoked below deck in a custom smokehouse. Other places with relaxing decks and patios include The Branding Iron, 35 E. Its menu features a range of made-from-scratch items and its front porch offers an authentic, mountain-home experience and views of the rural area. The café stays open for dinner and barbecue and burgers on Fridays and Saturdays.
Located in the center of Allenspark, Rock Creek Tavern and Pizzeria, 6 Ski Road, serves sandwiches and wraps as well as its signature pizzas and salad options. There is also wine, beer and limited bar selection. Its deck offers a secluded location for relaxing and views of tiny Allenspark. Lyons This is another town that has numerous outdoor dining options worth exploring. Most establishments have large decks or patios for a pleasant al fresco experience. Mojo Taqueria, 216 E. Main St. serves fresh Mexican food made from scratch using high-quality, traditional ingredients. The restaurant features a large wrap-around deck area with plenty of outdoor seating as well as large, garage-style doors that open to bring the outside in during nice weather. The Lyons Farmette, 4121 Ute Hwy., is a working organic farm and education center that hosts farm dinners on various Wednesday evenings, July 3-Sept. 25. Dinners feature chefs from incredible restaurants from the region. Enjoy innovative and fresh meals under the stars.
