Consider meaning of stars, stripes on Flag Day

PEAK TO PEAK There are plenty of things to celebrate in June including our dad’s on Fathers Day, June 16 and warm weather on the Summer Solstice, June 21.

Don’t overlook celebrating our county’s flag and what it represents when Flag Day comes around, June 14.

The first celebration of the U.S. Flag’s birthday was held in 1877 on the 100th anniversary of the Flag Resolu-

tion of 1777. However, it is believed that the first annual recognition of the flag’s birthday dates back to 1885 when school teacher, BJ Cigrand, first organized a group of Wisconsin school children to observe June 14, the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes as the Flag’s Birthday. Cigrand, now known as the “Father of Flag Day,” continued to publicly advocate the observance

of June 14 as the flag’s “birthday” or “Flag Day” for years.

The first formal observance of Flag Day on June 14 was by the New York State Board of Education. Over the following years as many as 36 state and local governments began adopting the annual observance. For more than 30 years Flag Day remained a state and local celebration.

In 1916, the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 became a nationally observed event by a proclamation

by President Woodrow Wilson. However, it was not designated as National Flag Day until Aug. 3, 1949, when an Act of Congress designated June 14th of each year as National Flag Day. On Flag Day, citizens are asked to consider the meaning behind the banner that has served as “a guiding symbol on our nation’s journey, while celebrating the hope it inspires in the American people.”

National Adopt a Cat Month The month of June is also National Adopt a Cat Month. According to the Humane Society of the United States there are about 93.6 million pet cats in the country, and approximately 33 percent of households have at least one cat. Obviously, the playful feline is a widely beloved companion If you’re thinking about becoming a cat owner, you may be deciding whether to adopt one from a shelter or buy from a breeder. While no one can guess with any certainty how many stray cats are out there, the estimates about the number of cats euthanized in shelters each year reach the millions. If you want the satisfaction of saving a cat’s life, adopting can be the best choice. Local shelters offer background information on a particular cat.

In Gilpin and Clear Creek counties, plenty of adorable and adoptable cats can be found at Charlie’s Place, the Clear Creek/Gilpin County Animal Shelter, 500 W. Dumont Road in Dumont. Visit charlies placeshelter.org to view available pets. To adopt a cat, stop by the shelter, meet the cat and complete an application. The fee is $60 and includes spay/neuter and initial vaccinations.

The Estes Park Mountain Shop, 2050 Big Thompson Ave. welcomes Joe Grant for a special athlete presentation, film screening and slide show, June 15, 5-9 p.m.

In 2016, Grant took on the Tour de Fourteeners, a selfpowered link up of all of Colorado’s 14,000-foot mountains by bike and on foot. He started and finished at his home in Gold Hill, riding 1,100 miles between peaks and running or hiking another 400 miles to scale a total of 57 summits in a month. Enjoy a screening of A film about his experience, The Middle Way, followed by a slideshow, where Grant provides insights into the perspective he’s gained since the trip, and how it has shaped his current outlook and approach to the mountains. Trailhead shuttle returns for another season DATELINE Boulder County will once again offer a free shuttle service on weekends and holidays this summer and fall to carry passengers from Nederland’s RTD Park-n-Ride, 1st and Jackson Street, to the Hessie Trailhead, a popular entry point for accessing the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area off of Fourth of July Road.

ing and traffic congestion on the way to the trailhead. The first seven years of the program have been successful and shuttle ridership has increased almost every year. Last year, more than 11,860 people rode the shuttle to get to the trailhead and back, which is a more than 3,000 rider increase over 2017.

The shuttle schedule has been extended once again to include peak “leaf peeping” weekends in the fall.

Shuttle service runs 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturdays and on Sundays it runs from

8 a.m.-6 p.m. Exceptions to that schedule include: July 4-5 and Sept. 1 when the shuttle runs 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sept.

2, when the shuttle runs 8 a.m.-6 p.m.

Shuttles run every 18-20 minutes.

On Sept. 7, the shuttle shifts to its fall 8 a.m.-6 p.m. schedule on both operating days until the last day, Oct. 6 to account for shorter periods of daylight.

Non-profit group creates new event to benefit music education

GILPIN COUNTY njoy some of Colorado’s top bluegrass-based bands and support music programs at Gilpin County School at the Fourth of July Barn Dance at the Gilpin County Fairgrounds, 230 Norton Dr. The event, being held for the first time, is presented by the non-profit Peak to Peak Music Education Association, which produced the annual NedFest Music Festival.

The concert, which runs from 1:30-9 p.m., features The Railsplitters, The Sweet Lillies, Ragged Union, members of Trout Steak Revival with Bridget Law and “tweener” jams hosted by Miles Perry of Caribou Mountain Collective. Doors open at 1 p.m. The music is scheduled to end in time for attendees to enjoy the Boom Town fireworks display in nearby Black Hawk at 9:30 p.m.

Arts, crafts, food vendors and Colorado microbrew beer are also featured at the event, which is free for kids 12 and under. Kid’s activities, including a bouncy castle and fire engine rides, are planned.

Adult tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Order a T-shirt with a ticket for $17. Teens with a valid ID can purchase a $20 ticket on the day of the

show. All proceeds will be donated to Gilpin County School music programs.

Ticket sales are capped at 500 people.

Although rooted in traditional bluegrass and old time music, The Railsplitters are pushing the boundaries of those genres in every sense. With their lush harmonies, instrumental virtuosity and non-conformist songwriting, The Railsplitters deftly demonstrate what happens when musical influences ranging from samba to hip hop merge with traditional Appalachian music.

The Sweet Lillies’ high-energy, melodic tunes have quickly captured the hearts of fans in Colorado and beyond. The band credits its appeal to the original and compelling songwriting of three women who share an unwavering commitment to life on the road.

Ragged Union’s sound includes recognizable bluegrass melodies and country lyric themes alongside non-traditional lyrics, rhythms and arrangements; “breakneck grassy” duets, slower “country-funk” tunes; traditional arrangements, composed ideas and the occasional “jam” section. Throughout all of it the bluegrass quality is retained with world-class instrumentalists.

Ever since winning the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, Trout Steak Revival has become the quintessential Colorado string band.

It won an Emmy Award for a soundtrack they contributed to a Rocky Mountain PBS. Bridget Law is a fiddler known for her work with Elephant Revival.

Guitarist Miles Perry from Caribou Mountain Collective masterfully embodies the mountain heritage in his catalog of original works.

Jazz festival offers New Orleans experience CENTRAL CITY

Local bluegrass favorites headline new event ALLENSPARK Popular bluegrass band Chain Station brings its high-energy, “fun and infectious” music to the inaugural Red, White & Bluegrass event, June 30 at 6 p.m., at The Old Gallery, 14863 Hwy. 7.

The band is excited about playing the event according to bassist Jon BLUEPickett. “This is the first time we’ve GRASS had the privilege to play a big little show for so many of our mountain friends in such a unique and beautiful venue like The Old Gallery,” he said. “Allenspark is right down the street from Estes Park, where the band was born. As our mountain-backyard it feels like home and we’re really looking forward to this.”

Admission is $35 in advance and $40 at the door, subject to availability. It includes an Italian dinner

The Old Gallery is a non-profit center for community, the arts and visitors. It’s home to more than 20 accomplished artists who display and sell their work. Central Jazz of Central City is back. The event once again features New Orleans jazz legends and Mardis Gras style attractions taking over the streets of Central City. The festival takes place in various locations throughout the town and includes ticketed stages and JAZZ free music on Main Street and at Grand Z Casino.

Presented by Big Easy and Central Presents, Central Jazz is the revival of the Central City Jazz Festival, which ran continuously from 1976 through 1992. Expanding to two days in 2019, the festival features four stages and numerous bands, June 7-8.

Taking over the downtown streets of Central City, music offerings include stages on Main Street and in the Teller House parking lot. Late-night sets at the Grand Z Casino and Teller House are planned as is a Sunday Jazz Brunch, Cajun Crawfish Boil and a second line. There’s also food, vending and more.

The two-day festival features Dumpstaphunk, The New Mastersounds, George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners, Melvin Seals & JGB, The New Orleans Suspects, Michal Menert Trio, and more. In New Orleans Jazz Fest tradition there will also be jams pairing together members from various bands to create something unique and special. Central Jazz will play host to a variety of other talent curated by

George Porter Jr. at last year’s inaugural Central Jazz.

enver trio Yawpers released a new album Human Question in April. Following its critically acclaimed and meticulously plotted concept album Boy in a Well, the Yawpers created Human Question with a contrasting immediacy.

The album was written, rehearsed and recorded over a two-month period with Reliable Recordings’ Alex at Chicago’s renowned Electrical Audio. The band tracked live in one room, feeding off the collective energy and adding few overdubs. Through the new approach, 10 songs connect with an organically linked attitude and style.

“I wanted to take a crack at using these songs as therapy, really,” lead singer and guitarist Nate Cook said. “I think I’ve always been inclined to write more towards the dregs of my psyche, and explore my depressions and trauma, rather than describe a way out.”

The Yawpers formed in 2011 when Parmet and Cook played together at the only speakeasy in Boulder, CO. In August 2018, the band announced that Alex Koshak would be stepping in on drums as they headed into the studio to record their next album.

Through their first three albums, the group divined a signature style--what Pitchfork described as “an expansive vision of rock ‘n’ roll, one that cherrypicks from various folk traditions: punk, rockabilly, blues, whatever they might have on hand or find in the trash.” The sound is a front-heavy, groovy, fire & brimstone punk-blues overlying a dynamic and metaphysical roots rock. On Human Question, the Denver trio zooms out to a more vast and accessible stylistic and spiritual universe.

Human Question isn’t meant for the meek or casual listener. It will make you dance, mosh, sing along, and dig deep into your soul. Some people lament that rock-n-roll is dead—they just haven’t heard the Yawpers yet.

Musicians introduce Latin reggae to U.S.

State’s top ‘jamgrass’ musicians unite at memorial festival

The Estes Arts District celebrates Dick Orleans’ legacy with music and community at the 4th Annual Friends of Folk Festival, held in the style of the late musician and photographer’s local “Friends of Folk” nights.

Elkhorn Ave., features a headlining performance by a “JamGrass Super Band Collective,” that includes Adam Aijala and Ben Kaufmann of Yonder Mountain String Band, Andy Thorn of Leftover Salmon, Jeremy Garrett of The Infamous Stringdusters and Stephen Mougin of The Sam Bush Band.

Organizers encourage everyone to “claim your spot” early for the popular, free event and be sure to bring chairs or blankets.

For more than 31 years, Orleans sang and played his guitar at the many music venues in Estes Park and became much more than just another great folk musician to the town’s residents and creative scene. He loved nature, music, photography and treating people like they were his best friend. He also was always supporting others to pursue their arts.

A scholarship fund has been established with Orleans’ passions in mind and this year’s awards will be given out at the festival. Anyone in the Estes Valley with a passion for music, photography or the arts can apply. All donations from the festival are used to put on the concert and fund the scholarships.

The High Peaks Art Festival is an early summer tradition.

Art at Altitude NEDERLAND he 19th Annual High Peaks Art Festival, June 29-30, is a free, friendly, outdoor juried show featuring fine arts, contemporary crafts, live music and food booths in the Nederland Visitor Center parking lot, 4 W. 1st St. The festival runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday.

This year’s festival, which has garnered many accolades in the art community, includes 40 booths, with artwork in all media including painting, photography, jewelry, clothing, flint knapping, metal and mixed media fine craft. All art is juried and only the highest caliber of artwork is accepted.

The 2019 Featured Artist is David Jessup of Green Collar Guy Designs. He has exhibited for 10 years and is an annual favorite. He has won several awards with at the event including Best of Sculpture and Best of Mixed Media.

“My artwork is composed of cement combined with any number of materials, the main one being perlite,” Jessup said. “As I make a piece, I can add glass, ceramics, rock, metal or many other collected natural materials. After a short cure time, they can be carved and sculpted and either left natural or stained with concrete stains or natural dyes. Finished work is generally lightweight and very durable even under the harshest conditions. My work includes containers designed for succulents, air plants, or for use as sculpture. Leaf castings and bowls to hold water are other very popular designs.”

According to Stiers, the event is different from others because its focus is to be a small juried art festival, “presenting the public with the best fine art and contemporary crafts in the region.” Patrons enjoy the intimate experience.

The High Peaks Artist Award Program, now in its 11th year, distributes awards sponsored by Nederland businesses and community members. More than $1,000 in cash prizes is distributed to artists in 12 categories. Awards will be handed out Saturday at 12:15 p.m. by the judges, sponsors and Mayor Kris Larsen. “Basically one out of every 3-4 artists gets an award,” Stiers said. “High Peaks Art Festival has a stellar reputation in the art community due to the fact that we treat our artists like gold.”

Each year, Stiers chooses a local non-profit to support with a cash donation, a free ad and lots of free publicity. The 2019 Featured Non-Profit is The Holistic Homestead, a non-profit dedicated to improving the health and wellness of our mountain communities through education, outreach, and advocacy. They have been serving the Peak to Peak region since 2012 with a wide variety of services including a Used Durable Medical Equipment lending program, the Gilpin County Farmers Market and Hands-On Health Literacy for Kids in the local schools and libraries.

NEDERLAND Gilpin County-based artist Virginia Unseld is busy this summer. She is featured in a one-woman show called “Colorado Collection” at the Nederland Library and has art featured in June openings at the Gilpin County Arts Association’s 72nd annual Juried Art Show, Plein FINE ART Air Artists of Colorado exhibit in Grand Lake and the International Association of Pastel Societies show in Albuquerque. She also hosts a Summer Solstice Super Studio Sale at her studio, June 21-23 and is the awards judge for the Georgetown Plein Air event, Aug. 2-3.

Unseld is currently the featured artist at the Nederland Community Library, 200 Hwy. 72. For the show, which runs through July 30 during library hours, she chose pastel paintings that reflect the beauty of Colorado in every season featuring locally familiar subjects. Sales of paintings are through the artist and a discount is being offered to Gilpin County and Nederland residents.

Her work, “Muted Presence” is part of the Plein Air Artists of Colorado exhibit at Studio 8369, 1117 Grand Ave. in Grand Lake through June 28.

The artist is also “very proud” her “Singing the Blues” piece was accepted into the prestigious 2019 International Association of Pastel Societies show in Albuquerque, June 4-8. This short exhibit runs in

Famous bed races, ‘Old-West’ entertainment return to historic Main Street for 45th year CENTRAL CITY very year, Central City throws a street party to celebrate Madam Lou Bunch, one of its most infamous residents. Steeped in tradition, the 45th Annual Lou Bunch Day, June 15, includes world-famous bed races, Madam and Miners Ball and a range of family-friendly entertainment beginning at noon. It’s free to watch.

The story goes that during the town’s gold-mining boom, a madam named Lou Bunch was running houses on Pine Street. But when an epidemic broke out, she turned her places of business into makeshift hospitals, where she and the girls nursed miners back to health. Forty-plus years ago it was decided to commemorate Madam Lou and this local history with a day of festivities, including brass bed races.

The day kicks off at noon with live music, vendors and the Grand Arrival of Madams, Dandy Dans and Victorian Highbrows. “Old-West” entertainment continues at 1 p.m. with “The Wild Bunch” and a parade of race teams leading the bed to the starting line begins at 2:45 p.m.

The highly-anticipated Bed Races begin at 3 p.m. and feature teams of three—two men and one woman—pushing a brass bed on wheels down, and back up, Main Street for the fastest time. Winners are announced at 5 p.m.

Last year, Johnny Z’s Casino won and Z Casino took second. The Famous Bonanza Casino was third. Watch for the annual Central City Opera entry, which always features well-dressed participants. Last year the group won “Best Bed Team Costume” and “Maiden Voyage,” awarded to the team with the overall

Be inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Scandinavia at the 27th Annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, a tradition that celebrates the summer solstice, June 21-23, in Bond Park in Downtown Estes Park. More CULTURAL than 80 artisans, organizations, and performers share EVENT their cultural heritage through food, crafts, demonstrations, and entertainment. Come for the raising of the Midsummer Pole, peruse the Scandinavian Market, and visit the Fjellborg Viking Village.

The free festivities begin Friday in the beer garden at 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Saturday at 9:30 a.m. the festivities continue with the raising of the Maypole, followed by a Grand March entrance. Dancing and live music continue all day with opportunities for the audience to participate in some dances.

Experience park on guided bus tour ESTES PARK As the snow melts and Trail Ridge Road opens for the summer season, Rocky Mountain National Park begins to bloom. Committee hosts garden party ESTES PARK The Mrs. Walsh’s Garden Committee hosts an Open Garden Party at Mrs. Walsh’s Garden, 322 W. Elkhorn Ave., June 20 from 4:30 p.m. to dusk. Mrs. Walsh’s Garden was a gift to Estes Park residents and visitors. To prevent a 0.69-acre lot from being developed for commercial use, Judy Lamy purchased it in 1996 and began the public garden named for her grandmother. The land was donated to the town in 2017 and is maintained by its Parks Division with funds provided through an endowment established by Lamy. It is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Although Mrs. Walsh’s Garden was severely disturbed by the 2013 flood, significant restoration and enhancement has occurred. The garden has become an easily accessible resource to learn about plants native to this area of the Rocky Mountains. It also provides ideas for landscaping for personal gardens.

Rincon del Sol II is set to open in the space formerly occupied by Dot’s Diner on the Mountain, 20 Lakeview Dr. Many of the items found on the popular Boulder menu, including margaritas, will also be available in Nederland.

Festival focuses on Front Range spirits CENTRAL CITY

The 7th annual Stills in the Hills, Central City’s “premier libation festival,” features dozens of Colorado craft distilleries and hundreds spirits and craft cocktails on the town’s historic Main Street, June 22, from 1-6 p.m. Limited general admission and VIP tickSPIRITS ets are available.

Live music from Forever in Blue Jeans, a Neil Diamond tribute band, and The Rick Lewis Project provide entertainment during the event while vintage cars from the Model A Ford Club of Denver, food vendors, artists and more add to the atmosphere.

The event is free and open to the public, but if you want to participate in the spirit tastings, buy tickets online or at King Soopers and City Markets in advance for $35, or get a $45 ticket at the event. VIP tickets are $60 in advance or $70 at the event and include a private hospitality tent with a bar and early access to the festival at noon.

Mountain communities highlight history through unique museums PEAK TO PEAK earning about history is often seen as dull, boring and without relevance. Not in the mountain towns in and near Colorado’s Peak to Peak Region. While the region’s communities have evolved since their founding, many still display obvious evidence of, and strong connections to, their past identities—which around here is hard rock mining and tourism.

To many, these histories are fascinating for their uniqueness and giving a glimpse of what it was like to live in such forboding locations during the Victorian era. One of the best ways to explore these pasts more deeply— while creating a stronger connection to the area—is by visiting the many museums across the region.

With numerous museums in the mountain communities from Silver Plume to Evergreen, and many more in nearby metro area towns, no matter which direction you’re going, you’re bound to be near a museum to delve

into the past and step back in time.

In many parts of the country, museums are a great wintertime or rainy day activity. Around here, many of the attractions are only open between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day, so visiting a local museum has to fit into summer plans.

The variety of museums in this small, rural part of Colorado is surprising. While many feature the general history of a specific area—like the Heritage Museum in Idaho Springs, Gilpin History Museum in Central City, Gold Hill Museum, Redstone Museum in Lyons and the Estes Park Museum—others focus on mining, fire fighting, energy production and pioneer living. All of them are unique.

While setting aside time for special activities this summer, don’t forget to plan a visit to a local museum to expand your knowledge and appreciation for the region and its not too distant past. Watch for special museum events throughout the summer, too.

Estes Park Museum Gallery reopens to public The Estes Park Museum, 200 Fourth St., reopened its doors to the public in May after being closed since October 2018 to complete an interior remodel project and collections move. The museum is once again open yearround, Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is free.

The remodel, funded by the Town with contributions by the Estes Park Museum Friends & Foundation, Inc., has enhanced the visitor experience with improvements to the meeting and programming room, guest welcome experience and staff and volunteer offices.
