Shop, support non-profits locally this season

FRONT RANGE During the busy gift-buying season that begins this month, be sure to spend time shopping in your community and supporting local businesses, especially on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 30. Many benefits come from staying local and shopping small. Money spent in the community will go back into it in the form of creating

employment opportunities. According to the Small Business Administration, the 28 million small businesses in America account for 54 percent of all sales in the U.S. Plus, small businesses have provided 55 percent of all jobs and 66 percent of all new jobs since the 1970s. When you make a purchase at a small business, you are doing your part to stimulate the local economy.

Shopping at small businesses helps keep money within the neighborhood. A series of studies by the research firm Civic Economics found 48 percent of purchases at local independent businesses go back into the community compared to less than 14 percent of sales made at chain stores. By participating in Small Business Saturday and shopping local all season, local independent businesses will thrive and continue adding to the vibrancy and uniqueness of a community.

NOTEWORTHY Kyle Donovan - Then and Now

• November 3: Gold Hill Inn w/Kate Farmer • 7:30 p.m. $10

K

yle Donovan, “the storytelling troubadour,” has been crafting vivid vignettes and capturing his critical acclaimed soaring tenor vocals and finger-style guitar work on his new album, Then and Now. Written, recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered by Donovan, the debut solo album was funded by more than 200 friends and fans. It was released at the end of August. Collaborators and guest artists include Bonnie & Taylor Sims, James Tuttle, Daniel Herman, Pete Damore, Monica Marie, Jason Bertone, Michelle Pietrafitta, Kate Farmer, Antonio Lopez, Leor Manelis, Colin Robison, and Bret Batterman. A number of audio engineers, including James Tuttle, Bret Batterman, Daniel Herman, and Leor Manelis, contributed their time and expertise. Artwork featured on the album was drawn by Boulder-based illustrator Nikki Nichols. The album brings the human experience into full focus, with the passage of time, coming of age, and losing or reuniting with loved ones appearing as common themes. Donovan has been honoring the truth that we’re more alike than different and uncovering universal stories through songwriting, crafting tales of everyday life and infusing them with a type of mystery, emotion, and tenderness that is often felt and seldom understood. Donovan embraced his quest for meaning first through studying philosophy at the University of Colorado, and now continues that path through songwriting, playing, and embracing his local community. As a sound engineer, Donovan records and produces local bands including Longmont’s legendary Clandestine Amgio, with whom he also plays electric guitar. He has further pulled friends and peers closer into his orbit by launching a live-performance interview-style podcast called The Songwriter Hour. This monthly event brings independent musicians and attentive listeners into an intimate space with a palpable weight and energy -- where vulnerability shines through to illuminate the darkest corners of each song. Then and Now is available on major streaming platforms and music stores. Visit kyledonovan.com to learn more about the artist and stream his music.

This selective thinning improves overall forest health and reduces the impacts of future wildfires.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park hosts a Christmas Tree Cut & Open House, Dec. 7.

Participants can warm up at the visitor center with hot drinks, cookies, candy canes and a 20 percent discount in the gift shop. In the spirit of giving, canned goods will be collected for the local food bank to help those in need. For more information, contact the visitor center at 303-582-3707 or visit cpw.state.co.us/ placestogo/parks/GoldenGateCanyon.

COVER STORY

Time For Turns Alpine ski, board season kicks off early with resort improvements, new options

C

olorado’s 2019-20 ski season is underway with an abundance of natural snow. A “highenergy crowd” of skiers and snowboarders celebrated the official start of the season in Colorado and North America, Oct. 11, when Arapahoe Basin Ski Area opened at 3:30 p.m. The opening followed an announcement from Keystone that it would open Oct. 12, its earliest opening in more than 20 years. “We did this because the snow is really good, our people are anxious and we are ready to go. We thought it would be fun,” Arapahoe Basin COO Alan Henceroth said. Keystone, which made significant investments to its snowmaking infrastructure over the summer, opened, Oct. 12. Thanks to the investments and ideal early season temperatures, Keystone gave ABasin some new first-to-open competition this year. After a short warm spell that slowed snowmaking, Loveland Ski Area received more than a foot of natural snowfall and opened Oct. 25. Eldora announced it opens for alpine skiing and riding on Nov. 1, a full two weeks ahead of schedule, one week ahead of last winter and three weeks ahead of its historic average. It is the resort’s earliest opening in 22 years. Opening day signals the start of another worldclass winter in Colorado, where life-long skiers, new participants and those looking to enjoy the mountain environment can enjoy Colorado’s consistently great winter conditions, bluebird skies and warm welcome. Colorado Ski Country USA member resorts— including Loveland, Echo Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Winter Park, Eldora, Copper Mountain and Granby Ranch—as well as Vail Resorts-owned ski areas Breckenridge and Keystone—spent the offseason working on significant capital infrastructure improvements, new lodging options, dining experiences and more. In addition to improvements that seasoned skiers and riders will enjoy, ski areas in the region are also offering a wide variety of guest enhancements and learning options that brand-new skiers and riders, or those returning the sport after some time away, will be excited about.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area • Open After completing a 468-acre terrain expansion into the Beavers and the Steep Gullies last season— including the new four-person Beavers chairlift— A-Basin is continuing to upgrade its facilities. This is the first full season of Il Rifugo, the highest lift-served restaurant in North America at just over 12,500 feet. A-Basin will also have newly remodeled bathrooms in the basement of the main lodge. For this season, A-Basin changed its pass partnerships in an effort to reduce ski and snowboard visPage 22

its on weekends and holidays and to improve the quality of the guest experience. A-Basin can now be accessed on a limited basis on the Ikon Pass, Ikon Base Pass and Mountain Collective Pass. The only way to ski A-Basin more than seven days without blackout dates is to purchase an A-Basin pass for the 2019-20 season. Copper Mountain • Opens Nov. 8 This season, Copper Mountain visitors can explore 273 acres of expert terrain on Tucker Mountain with the new Three Bears chairlift. The three-person fixed grip lift—topping out at 12,421 feet— accesses terrain that was previously accessible via snowcat or hiking only. Guests can enjoy a warming hut at the top of the lift and bathrooms at the bottom. Copper Mountain has also begun construction on a new 127-room, four-story hotel with anticipated completion as early as 2020. Echo Mountain Resort • Opens Nov. 29 After opening its tubing hill last season, Echo Mountain is adding a new food truck, Two Mile Pie, serving pizza, drinks and snacks throughout the winter. Access to the tubing hill will also be more convenient with a new staircase and a new deck outside the rental shop. In addition to enjoying Echo’s emphasis on a non-judgmental atmosphere, guests can also purchase new pass products like the Night Season Pass or Midweek Season Pass for under $100. Eldora • Open Eldora introduces new buses in its parking lots this season to create an improved experience for guests. It is also finalizing a rideshare app that will help connect guests to facilitate carpooling and reduce traffic. Terrain park enthusiasts will be excited about Eldora’s new Zaugg terrain-shaping machine, which allows the park crew to create consistent and innovative park features all winter. The rental shop also features a new tuning machine helping guests to quickly receive ski and snowboard care. Granby Ranch • Opens Dec. 13 Granby Ranch replaced 5,000 feet of snowmaking pipe for this season. It will allow the ski area to open all blue runs on opening day. Granby Ranch’s new food and beverage team is offering specific themed dinner options for guests on Wednesday

nights throughout the season. For the second season, Granby Ranch also offers groups the opportunity to rent the East Mountain for the evening including night skiing. Loveland Ski Area • Open A year after debuting the new Chet’s Dream chairlift, Loveland is partnering with the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Snowstang for the upcoming season. A roundtrip ticket on the new direct bus service will cost $25 with discounts for seniors, children and disabled passengers. Guests can be picked up at Union Station in Denver and the Denver Federal Center. Snowstang will run on weekends, Dec. 12 through mid-April, and some holidays. Winter Park Resort • Opens Nov. 2 A new 6-person Sunnyside chair was installed for this season, replacing an old 3-person fixed grip chair in one of the most popular areas of the resort. The $6 million upgrade will reduce ride time from eight minutes to under four minutes and reduce lift lines at the bottom of Parsenn Bowl. For the first time, Winter Park will also offer guests guided off mountain adventures like nighttime experiences or backcountry skiing or riding. Breckenridge & Keystone resorts • Nov. 8/Open Vail Resorts is also excited about improvements made at its Summit County resorts, Breckenridge and Keystone. New for this season, the Epic Day Pass allows guests to ski its resorts for up to half off window prices for a little as one day. Also introduced are the Keystone Plus Pass—which provides unlimited access to Keystone, unlimited late spring skiing at Breckenridge and five days at Crested Butte—and the Keystone Crested Butte 4-Pack—which offers any four days at Keystone and Crested Butte. Breckenridge, which has pushed it closing date to Memorial Day this season, has transformed the Peak 8 Base Area. This winter, guests will be greeted with a whole new look and feel, new locations for tickets and rentals as well as new amenities including an outdoor ice skating rink, coffee shop, public restrooms and town transit stop. Also, Gravity Haus Breckenridge replaces the former Village Hotel at the base of Breckenridge Ski Resort’s Peak 9. The renovated and tech-forward ski-in/ ski-out boutique property debuts in December.
