Conflict resolution can resolve almost any dispute
FRONT RANGE In March 2006, the third Thursday in October was proclaimed to be Conflict Resolution Day for annual international celebration. In Colorado, however, we celebrate conflict resolution throughout the entire month of October rather than just one day. The month-long event is to promote awareness of mediation, arbitration,

conciliation and other creative, peaceful means of resolving conflict; promote the use of conflict resolution in schools, families, businesses, communities, governments and the legal system; recognize the significant contributions of peaceful conflict resolvers; and obtain national synergy by having celebrations happen across the country and around the world on the same day.
| OCTOBER 2019
Conflict resolution can be used to help resolve almost any type of dispute. According to the Conflict Resolution Month website, there are many ways to resolve conflicts, including surrendering, running away, overpowering your opponent with violence, filing a lawsuit and others. The movement toward Alternative Dispute Resolution, sometimes referred to simply as conflict resolution, grew out of the belief that there are better options than using violence or going to court. Common forms of conflict resolution include: • Negotiation is a discussion among two or more people with the goal of reaching an agreement. • Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process in which a neutral third-party facilitator helps people discuss difficult issues and negotiate an agreement. Basic steps in the process include gathering information, framing the issues, developing options, negotiating, and formalizing agreements. Parties in mediation create their own solutions and the mediator does not have any decisionmaking power over the outcome. • Arbitration is a process in which a third-party neutral, after reviewing evidence and listening to arguments from both sides, issues a decision to settle the case. Arbitration is often used in commercial and labor/management disputes. The Conflict Center—which offers numerous conflict resolution resources at Conflictcenter.org—offers the following ten conflict resolution tips: • Respect everyone’s ideas and needs • Turn problems into possibilities • Listen so people will talk and talk so people will listen • Focus on the problem, not the person • Build “power with” not “power over” others • Express feeling without blaming others • Own your part of the conflict • Strategize to reach mutually agreeable solutions • Create options… one way always creates losers • Solve the problem and build the relationship Learn more at conflictresolutionmonth.org. Chain Station
Halloween Hoedown Rock Inn hosts annual Boo!Grass celebration with Chain Station
ESTES PARK elebrate the Sixth (mostly) Annual Boo!Grass Halloween with Chain Station, Oct. 31, 8 p.m.-midnight, at The Rock Inn, 1675 Hwy. 66. There is a costume contest with a theme of “Super Heroes and Super Villains.” Cover is $10 at the door. The Rock Inn is also sponsoring free rides home, but arive early as capacity is limited. “Boo!Grass has become a tradition and Chain Station Halloween shows have become legendary, and frankly, infamous,” bassist Jon Pickett said. “The mountain town cult following of this once small-town band has grown into a national one with sellout shows and the spring release of album three: Backroads. But, we always bring it back to the original stage where Chain Station was born as a band.” Be sure to wear a costume along the theme of “Superheroes & Super Villans” as Odell Brewing is sponsoring some big prizes. Chain Station is known for winning over crowds with creative, fun original songs that”flow from the mountains.” The band has been living through music and adventures for eight years. Relentless gigging in and near Colorado, the Midwest and Canada has made it “one of the tightest, most professional ragtag pack of muppets” on the scene today. “We met around a campfire,” Co-founder Alex Thoele said, “and we’ve been putting that loose, organic vibe on stage ever since. We call it mountain music, because that’s where we formed. That’s where we live. And that’s what we do.” Chain Station’s members—Alex Thoele on guitar and vocals, Jarett Mason on mandolin and vocals, Jon Pickett on bass and vocals, and Chris “C-Bob” Elliot on banjo—create music well-steeped in Americana roots, with vocal harmonies that are high, lonesome, and tight. Their picking ranges from lightningfast to mountain mellow and can satisfy a picky old-timer and delight fans of

newgrass at the same time. The band’s highly-anticipated album Backroads was released, May 11. Highlonesome harmonies, fiery fretwork and acoustic instruments—the ingredients of traditional bluegrass music—are all present, tucked into an 11-song tracklist that not only nods to Chain Station’s appreciation for the old-time heroes of the genre, but also pushes the band into new territory. Songwriter expresses life’s joy, fragility
CENTRAL CITY/JAMESTOWN Boulder-based singer-songwriter Dechen Hawk creates music that ranges from beautiful ballads to serious back-beat funk. His sound is a refreshing new addition to the Neo-Soul movement. The performer plays free solo shows in Central City at ROCK JKQ BBQ at the Teller House, 120 Eureka St., Oct. 4 and Nov. 1, 6-8 p.m. He also performs for free with Jesse Ryan Hunter and Max DeVincenzo at the Jamestown Mercantile, Oct. 10, 8-10 p.m. It wasn’t until the death of his father at age 14, and the search for a way to express that loss, that Hawk found his calling as a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Hawk’s desire to create and express the joy and fragility of life has kept him busy for the past 24 years performing locally and internationally.
Dead Floyd Dechen Hawk
During this time Hawk has written hundreds of songs, released seven albums, been in numerous bands and played the role of talent buyer for various venues. A 2009 graduate of Naropa University, Hawk studied with Bill Douglas, Art Lande and Janet Feder. Visit facebook.com/JkqBbq and jamestownmercantile.com to learn more.

From Red Rocks to rodeos Halden Wofford and the Hi-Beams deliver an unforgettable and original night of American music. NOTEWORTHY Billy Strings - Home
• Nov. 4: “What the Night Brings” Jeff Austin Benefit - 1st Bank Center, Broomfield • SOLD OUT • Dec. 13-14: Ogden Theatre, Denver • SOLD OUT
B
illy Strings has been hailed as the future of bluegrass, transcending tradition and genre with his high velocity, flat-picking guitar technique and intense, confessional songwriting. On Sept. 26, The International Bluegrass Music Association named Billy Strings “New Artist of the Year” and “Guitar Player of the Year” at its awards ceremony in Raleigh, North Carolina. In addition to a sweltering buzz of anticipation from fans and critics alike, Billy Strings’ fall tour—which includes more than 30 stops from California to New York—has sold out in advance in nearly every market. Two recently announced shows at Denver’s Ogden Theater sold out instantly upon going on sale. HOME, Strings’ second studio album, is undoubtedly the Michigan-born, Nashville-based artist’s bravest excursion thus far, reshaping bluegrass into his own exceptional form, completely rewiring the aesthetic with elements of punk, country, folk rock, and genuine psychedelic exploration to fashion something altogether original. From the jump, Strings has infused bluegrass with his own experiences and inspirations, adopting traditional sonic and lyrical idioms to confront contemporary social truths. HOME marks a landmark on this artist’s ongoing creative journey, its fearless songs and freewheeling approach recasting string-based American music in his own image. Bluegrass has long been a font for improvisational creation, allowing infinite space for musicians to push each other to new heights of exploration and interaction. Strings and his fellow players keep that tradition alive by diving headlong into extended, expansive jams, seamlessly creating whole new worlds with an unstoppable charm, kinetic energy, and a profound connection with the audience. “When those doors open up,” Strings says, “we truly have no idea what lies beyond. When we’re on stage and all of a sudden we get into a space, it’s like, OK we’re going to go, we have no fucking idea what’s going to happen. Just like everybody else in the room. And that’s where it gets magic.” HOME sees featured appearances from award-winning guitarist Molly Tuttle; fiddler John Mailander, who works with Bruce Hornsby, Peter Rowan and Tony Trischka; Detroit-based tabla player John Churchville; and 14 time GRAMMY Award-winning Dobro master Jerry Douglas. Songwriter said to be among most talented NEDERLAND
For those in the know, Steve Poltz is regarded as one of the most talented and prolific songwriters of our time. His songs have been among the longest running ever on the Billboard Top 100 and they regularly appear in movie soundtracks, television shows, and even the odd commercial. His touring schedule FOLK is ferocious, ping-ponging between continents with enough frequency to earn him manic followings in scores of different accents and languages. The musician performs, Nov. 9 at 9 p.m., at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Dr. The Rainbow Girls open. Tickets are $18 in advance or $20 at the door. Music fans have adored Poltz since he first fronted the hallowed punk-folk legends, The Rugburns, whose live shows earned the band a following that is best described somewhere between the terms “cult” and “crazed substance-abusing fanatics.” Once touring over 300 days a year, the Rugburns occasionally reunite for wildly popular sold-out shows. In 20 years since his full-length solo debut, he’s released 12 solo records. Poltz’ live shows have captivated audiences far and wide with a mix of singing, storytelling, shredding, and the occasional spoken word rants

which have been known to incite riots. He can take an audience from laughter to tears and back again in the space of the same song. Steve Poltz transcends the word “talented.” He is unforgettable in all the right ways. Visit thecaribouroom.com and poltz.com to learn more.

The group is not only “throwing our doors open to neighbors, friends and anyone looking for good music, food and company” during its Grand Opening event, Oct. 5, it will also be utilizing the space it calls “The Stables” for a variety of year-round performance and community activities including a full season of shows. Plans are underway for movies, cabarets, plays and musical performers. Built in 1876, Williams Stables was a full-service livery for the guests of the Teller House across the street. The Central City Opera House Association purchased it from the City of Central in 1953 and turned it into an intimate 90seat venue used for rehearsals, performances of short works of opera, and preperformance discussions. The Peak to Peak Players entered into collaboration with the Central City Opera to utilize the The Stables, 113 Eureka St., as a rehearsal and performance space to further its mission by producing a wide variety of high-quality productions and providing the group with a much-needed home base. Working with Director of Properties for the Central City Opera Eric Chinn, volunteers are renovating the space. Jacquelyn O’Brien has been appointed Stables Manager of Peak to Peak Players at the Stables. She is directly in charge of all bookings and oversees all aspects of the new venue. The Grand Opening Event, Oct. 5 at 5:45 p.m., costs $5 and includes dinner at JKQ BBQ in the Teller House, 120 Eureka St., followed by the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at The Stables at 7 p.m. A cash bar is available at JKQ. Singersongwriter Doug Fisichella, who was recently featured in the role of “Donkey” in the Peak To Peak Player’s summer musical Shrek, performs at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to “celebrate this exciting next step in our theatre company journey.” Advanced ticket purchase is appreciated. The new venue hosts a musical performance, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m., featuring Dutch & the RedHed, with musicians Adam Hunt and Dutch VanDeuchen.

The unifying theme is that water is depicted in each piece. As a landscape painter, I have often been drawn to [pun intended] depicting water: its color, movement, reflections. It is always a challenge,” Unseld said. “This show will include paintings from Alaska, Croatia, China, Greece and closer to home. From oceans to puddles, rivers to lakes. Brewing Up Changes
By Jeffrey V. Smith NEDERLAND n the middle of October, brothers Kyle and Nick Busey transform James Peak Brewery & Smokehouse into Busey Brews. There are plenty of changes and adjustments Nick and Kyle planned, including making a lot more beer, but the smoked Busey Photo courtesy meats and other features will remain. Celebrate the opening of Busey Brews Colorado’s newest brewery, Oct. 19, with food, beer and music. The Busey brothers, who grew up in Amish Country in Lancaster, PA, moved to Nederland in 2008, and Kyle has been there ever since. Kyle, who has been running Grow in Peace in town “for years,” has more than 22 years of restaurant experience “in every position possible,” a food and beverage management degree and “a love for service.” Nick, a computer programmer and CTO of a tech startup in Boulder, is an avid home-brewer. The inspiration for Busey Brews began when Kyle was hired as General Manager at James Peak this past spring. Although the brewery had not produced a beer in over a year, he decided with the help of his home-brewing brother and their friend Judd Kaufman, founder of Gold Dirt Distillery in Rollinsville, they could “re-ignite” the brewing program. They were right. “Over the course of the summer, I pursued the purchase of the brewery from the current owners, and on Aug. 30, the sale was finalized,” Kyle explained. “With my extensive restaurant background and Nick’s passion for brewing, operating a brewery in Nederland was a no-brainer for us. This is our home and we want to help make it a little bit better through beer, friends and barbecue.” Kyle is excited about the changes he and his brother have planned. “We know this location has a bit of a storied past, but we plan on making some serious improvements and changes in the way things operate. We hope you notice a big difference in your experience with us and recognize we are not just changing out the sign and calling it a day,” he said. The transformation to Busey Brews should be evident right away. “You will certainly see more beer,” Kyle said. “We have a brand-new fermenter and are upgrading various aspects of the brewing and tap system to allow us to brew and serve better beer than was possible in the past. You can also expect to see a barrel aging program in the near future. On the food side of things, the smoked meats

certainly aren’t going anywhere. We are planning on adding a second smoker to double our capacity… as we can barely keep up with the demand for our food.” In addition to beer, the brothers plan to ferPhoto courtesy Busey Brews ment other “delicious” forms of drinks and food as well. Look for house-fermented hot sauces and pickles “very soon,” as well as house-made kombucha and natural soda like birch and root beer. “We are also going to be installing a hydroponic garden to allow us to grow fresh greens year-round in addition to working with local farms to source as many ingredients locally as possible,” Kyle said. Due to licensing issues, Busey Brews can’t brew beer at its facility for opening day, Oct. 19, 11 a.m.-9 p.m., but other breweries have agreed to help with collaboration brews. For opening day, beer styles include, “Dragon Well Kölsch” from Jade Mountain, a New England-style IPA from Odd13, an Imperial Red IPA from Phantom Canyon and a kettle sour from Vision Quest. According to Nick, on-going beer styles will be “varied, seasonal and changing often.” The Brittney Wagner Duo performs during the event, 5-7 p.m. Beginning Oct. 19, Busey Brews, 70 E 1st St., is open Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m., and Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Visit buseybrews.com and facebook.com/BuseyBrews or call 855-NED-BREW to learn more.

Brewery creates anniversary beer NEDERLAND The Very Nice Brewing Company celebrates its seven-year anniversary, Oct. 26, noon-9 p.m. with a special aged version of its stout called “None More Black” and music by Flash & Friends, 6-8 p.m. “For years we have reCRAFT ceived requests to age our BEER flagship stout, The Logical Fallacy on bourbon and wood. For our lucky seventh anniversary, we decided to go for it,” coowner and brewer Jeff Green said. Although he has yet to see the final results, Green expects it to have the signature chocolate, roast, and coffee tones of his flagship stout but, a darker and richer tone in color and taste from the caramelization of an extended three hour boil. “Aged on medium-charred oak soaked in bourbon from virgin oak barrels, ‘The Fallacy’ delves deeper, adding delicious aromas of rich tobacco leaf and vanilla,” Green said. “For tasting, it adds hints of spicy orange and vanilla, ending in a level subtle sweetness. When asked, ‘How much more black could this be?’ The answer is ‘None. None More Black.’” Visit verynicebrewing.com or call 303258-3770 for more information.

COVER STORY
Little Library, BIG IMPACT
By Jeffrey V. Smith PEAK TO PEAK ittle Free Libraries—small, front-yard “take a book, return a book” locations credited with building community, sparking creativity and inspiring readers—are a global phenomenon. Evidence of the world’s largest booksharing movement can be found all across the Peak to Peak region. The unique neighborhood book exchanges come in all shapes and sizes, built and registered by both private citizens and business owners, are scattered throughout the area. Ten years ago, a Hudson, Wisconsin man created the first Little Free Library book exchange and placed it in his front yard in tribute to his mother, who had been a teacher. Ten years later, his idea has snowballed into a worldwide movement. There are now more than 90,000 Little Free Libraries in all 50 states and 91 countries. With the help of Little Free Libraries, more than 120 million books have been shared and thousands of neighbors have connected. The Clear Creek County Library District has several Little Free Libraries— from Loveland Ski Area to the Clear Creek County Recreation Center in Idaho Springs—with a goal to provide more books in more places, however they can, and to promote literacy and the love of reading—even to those living in the most remote parts of the region. Patrons can take a book or share a book at any Little Free Library location with several being accessible 24 hours a day. “Our mission is to empower our community through literacy, human connection, and equal access to resources, and the Little Free Library movement is very much in alignment with that,” CCCLD HR Director and Administrator Cameron Marlin said. “In addition, we feel as though the simple act of sharing books is a gesture that can strengthen communities. Little Free Libraries allow us to broaden our reach and to connect with readers who may not ever enter our libraries.” One officially registered Little Free Libraries can be found and outside artist and photographer Julie Lawrence’s soon to open 2 My Studio, 440 Gregory St., in the Mountain City area of Black Hawk. Inspired by her 92-year-old mother, who reads daily, she built a truly unique Little Free Library and book depository. “She always has a book in hand,” Lawrence said. “She has donated many of her books to a Little Library. She has inspired our whole family to read books. I, on the other hand, like to read when I’m not designing something like the Little Free library. Books inspire me to create art… My idea is to get as many people interested in reading, to enjoy an adventure with a book for free.” Lawrence says she will also be offering free bookmarks to go with the books in the library. “I also designed a hand-painted bench to be next to the Little Library so you can sit and read, or just enjoy while your choosing to find that next book adventure,” she said. Another location is at the Nederland Community Library, 200 Hwy. 72.“One of the particular joys of our Little Free Library—or, ‘library annex’ as we affectionately refer to it—is that it is truly a community-curated conversation: unfiltered, expansive and idiosyncratic,” Nederland Community Library Director Elektra Greer said. “I love that it captures some of our best human impulses—communal sharing, curiosity, creativity—and that it is truly unfettered access to books, a lifeline to many… any time, day or night.” There’s a second official location in Nederland in front of a private residence at 198 E. 5th St. as well as one behind the Sunshine Fire Station, 5880 Sunshine Canyon Dr., and another in Pinewood Springs that’s incorporated into a community bulletin board and housing for local newspapers. Many of the officially registered Little Free Libraries in Peak to Peak mountain communities can be found in Estes Park thanks to an initiative coordinated by Estes Valley Library Teen Guide Katherine Dumont in 2015. As a result, the town has at least 17 official locations and another in Glen Haven, 7499 Co Rd 43, that is a memorial to the Glen Haven Town Hall destroyed by the 2013 flood. Each library was built by a local resident, and each library is monitored and cared for by its own steward. The Estes Valley Library Friends and Foundation helps keep many of the little libraries stocked with free books. Estes Park locations include one made to serve the summer guests at the Gla-

They all serve the same purpose of promoting reading and sharing among neighbors.
