WELCOME —

Welcome to 2019 on the Isle of Wight

Welcome to the first edition of Wightlife Magazine as we begin 2019 here on the Isle of Wight… Brand new for 2019, we will be including the most comprehensive ‘What’s On Guide’ for the Island, packed full of local events, big and small. Flick through the pages and you’ll see why the Isle of Wight is often referred to as ‘Vibrant Isle’ – just make sure you book a holiday long enough to fit it all in! For the first time, we also have Wightlink’s ferry timetables for our three routes linking Portsmouth with Fishbourne, Lymington with Yarmouth and the FastCat service connecting Portsmouth Harbour with Ryde Pier Head. More than ever, this means Wightlife magazine is your essential guide to the Isle of Wight. As we head for spring, it is a great time to get out and explore all that the Island has to offer. See what wildlife is about at this time of year with our feature article ‘Why the Island is a special place for birds’ on page 28. We attract our fair share of celebrities over the year, and we managed to catch up with wellness guru Liz Earle about why the Island holds fond memories and her favourite things to do when here, see our interview on page 26. We are sure you won’t need much persuading to come back and visit us again, but read the article on our ‘Top 10 reasons to visit the Isle of Wight this summer’ and we are sure to convince you! So here’s to 2019 and we look forward to welcoming you on board.

DO STAY EAT

The who, the what, the where on the Isle of Wight...

Well, hello there 2019... 2019 looks set to be one of the most exciting years yet on the Isle of Wight.

DARK SKIES STATUS

In order to keep your finger on the pulse with all the goings-on on this busy Island, we will now be publishing Wightlife four times a year – making it jam-packed with the latest news and info. To make it even more useful, we will now be including our timetables each quarter as well as a bang up to date ‘What’s on Guide’.

THE GREAT WONDERFEST

The Island is submitting its application this year for International Dark Skies status. Dark Skies are specially designated areas where there are low levels of light pollution. When there is an absence of light pollution, thousands of stars are revealed at night. Read our ar ticle ‘A Natural Wonder’ on page 10 to find out more.

Ventnor Fringe is turning 10!

A brand new event has been announced for the Island this coming summer. August 2019 sees Dick and Dom (of ‘Da Bungalow’ fame) present The Great Wonderfest. Expect big name pop acts, bands and DJs, magic, comedy and vaudeville to play a big par t in the four day festivities. You can even extend the camping options for seven days and make a proper Island adventure of it. greatwonderfest.com

Ventnor Fringe is all grown-up. 2019 marks the tenth anniversary for the multi-award-winning arts festival held in the seaside town of Ventnor... Over the years, visitors have been treated to pop-up cinemas, basement bars, pianos in the streets, gigs in locals’ houses, mystery tours, intimate church shows and much more! We can’t wait to see what 2019 and the next ten years has in store. Make it a must-visit this year. Ventnor Fringe runs 23–28 July 2019. vfringe.co.uk

We love getting photos from our readers enjoying themselves around the Island... So we couldn’t resist this cute image of Archie the dog taking in the sights up at Headon Warren! Owner and reader Neil has recently moved to the Island and they are making the most of exploring the beautiful scenery right on their doorstep. If you have a photo or a story you’d like to share with us – then get in touch at wightlife@solent.co

The Needles Landmark Attraction is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a stunning view of the Island’s most famous landmark, the Needles Rocks and lighthouse. From Alum Bay beach (a short walk down 185 steps!) you can get a fantastic view of the amazing multi-coloured sand cliffs that have drawn people to this site since Victorian times. With 21 distinct colours of naturally occurring sand Alum Bay is a unique geological site that has over the years attracted sand collectors world wide. This stunning landscape is so impressive in winter with fantastic walks all around the area, including walks over Tennyson Down and nearby Headon Warren.

A NATURAL WONDER —

A natural wonder...

150 square miles of land and 100 more of inshore waters, cut away from the mainland 7,000 years ago but with a geology that goes back to the dinosaurs, the Isle of Wight is both a place apart and a microcosm of the English south coast. With its woods and forests, creeks and harbours, the arch of its chalk spine and ancient sandstone plain, towering sea cliffs, coves and beaches, historic towns and patchwork landscape, it takes the best from Devon to Kent and packages it up in an offer that’s just two hours from London but a world away from the city.

The Island is filled with wonderful arts and culture experiences; beautiful galleries, vibrant clubs and busy theatres. There is surfing, skateboarding, horse riding, cycling, football and motocross for the sporting. But it is the exceptional environmental quality that tops the bill for so many Island travellers. 75% of its land and over 90% of its coast has national or international status for its rich wildlife, outstanding landscape and dramatic geology - and with 520 miles of footpaths, bridleways and cyclepaths to choose from, you can explore and enjoy every bit of it. Many of these special places are nature reserves managed by the Island’s family of hard-working conservation organizations. The National Trust owns magnificent countryside and estates, such as Tennyson Down and Newtown Harbour. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight

A NATURAL WONDER —

Wildlife Trust has reserves right across the Island and is about to launch a grand celebration of marine biodiversity through its ‘Secrets of the Solent’ project and the RSPB has brought marsh harriers and bitterns back to its Brading Marshes flagship reserve. 2019 will see the Forestry Commission, another conservation land manager, planning the reintroduction of the spectacular sea eagle to the Island, last seen here in 1780!

The winter surf here is something special – but shhh it’s a secret.

With its woods and forests, creeks and harbours, the arch of its chalk spine and ancient sandstone plain, towering sea cliffs, coves and beaches, historic towns and patchwork landscape.

Half the Island is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the AONB team works with a broad partnership, including the landowners and farmers who steward so much of the countryside, to protect the best and enhance the rest. But it’s not just about preservation, in 2019 the AONB will see through two inspiring new initiatives that will stamp the Island indelibly on the global environment scene. First is International Dark Skies status, confirming the south-west coast (the ‘Back of the Wight’) as amongst the best in the world for stargazing. The second will be accreditation as a World Biosphere Reserve, joining just 600 others across the planet overseen by UNESCO, an agency of the United Nations. 2019 is a very big year indeed!

A NATURAL WONDER —

The Island is one of the best places for stargazing.

The Island boasts ‘100 million years of wildlife’ with very good reason, it is second only to China in the world rankings of the best places to find dinosaurs. There are species found only on the Isle of Wight, some of which are now permanently held by the Natural History Museum, but others remain here in our very own Dinosaur Isle collection. Better still, the scientists working in the laboratory there are cleaning and rebuilding new and extraordinary finds from the Island right in front of visitors. Take a walk on any of our beautiful beaches (especially after a winter storm) and you may find a shark tooth, turtle shell, crocodile skin, ammonites, plesiosaur backbone or a velociraptor claw!

150 square miles of land and 100 more of inshore waters, cut away from the mainland 7,000 years ago but with a geology that goes back to the dinosaurs, the Isle of Wight is both a place apart and a microcosm of the English south coast.

Dinosaur Isle experts lead walks and talks all year round and no matter when the season of your visit, the Island’s green calendar will have something to offer you. Wild About Wight, Down to the Coast and iWatch Wildlife are all projects running free events in 2019; you can join the IW Natural History Society and catch up with their busy schedule, visit the Footprint Trust’s Riverfest, or pitch into the amazing IW Walking Festival and seek out the wildlife specials (there are lots). If you’re feeling particularly active you can join in with the beach cleans organised by Wight Shores, Blue Seas Protection, IW Beach Cleaning Volunteers, Green Towns, Plastic Aware and the local branch of Surfers Against Sewage. A NATURAL WONDER —

Sandown Bay – ‘Designated Science Beach’.

The Island is known for special events that combine art and science and there are some unmissable examples such as the marine extravaganza of Under The Pier, The New Carnival Company at All Along The Riverbank in May and the Biosphere Mardi Gras in June. Shademakers Carnival Club curate the extraordinary two day festival, Hullabaloo in Sandown Bay. Hullabaloo is the centrepiece of the annual Discovery Bay programme, from British Science Week in March to Biology Week in October and with plenty more in between. And of course, you can stay in beautiful places that live and breathe the same message of environmental care and protection, choosing from so many outstanding locations and providers, such as Tom’s Eco Lodge at Tapnell Farm, and the Island’s clutch of David Bellamy Gold Award winners.

Wightlink too have made the environment a core part of its investment. Victoria of Wight, the newest ship in the fleet, runs on hybrid energy, meaning she runs partly on electricity (much like hybrid cars), heralding a new and greener era of travel between the Isle of Wight and the mainland....

Victoria of Wight the new Wightlink flagship runs on hybrid technology.

It’s not only in the celebration of its natural heritage that the Island can demonstrate outstanding environmental credentials. Increasingly it is a centre of new research and innovation, attracting some of the world’s leading organizations to develop new thinking and new technology that tackle problems of global sustainability.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, oil-spill specialists Vikoma, and international advisers on the circular economy, The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, are all based here. Wightlink too have made the environment a core part of its investment. Victoria of Wight, the newest ship in the fleet, runs on hybrid energy, meaning she runs partly on electricity (much like hybrid cars), heralding a new and greener era of travel between the Isle of Wight and the mainland. Wightlink has extended its focus on sustainable business practice to the construction of the new port facility at Fishbourne too. Here it is working with Island-based ecological design specialists Artecology and Bournemouth University, installing a set of artificial rock pools on one of the main docking walls. These are ‘Vertipools’, part of an emerging biological technology for combating the impacts of climate change on marine wildlife and putting the Island at the forefront of the new field of eco-engineering.

10 REASONS TO VISIT THIS SUMMER —

10 Reasons to visit this summer... #1 OUR STUNNING BE ACHES 57 miles of coastline means beaches for everything you could want. Sandy beaches for all the family, beaches perfect for watersports, dog-friendly beaches and some of the most famous coloured sands in the country.

#3 OUR INTERESTING HISTORY Queen Victoria’s holiday home; beautifully preserved Roman villas; Bronze Age burial mounds and a Neolithic (Stone Age) site are just some of the historic sites you can visit on your trip to the Isle of Wight.

#2 A JAM - PACKED E VENTS CALENDAR No matter the time of year, there is always something on, but the Island’s events scene is in full swing during the warmer months. Fun-filled festivals sit alongside country shows, local live music is played in most pubs and there are plenty of unique events for the whole family, such as the Wightlink Ryde Slide and Rhythmtree in Shalfleet.

#5 OUR TAST Y FOOD AND DRINK The weather not only makes Islanders happier, it does wonders to our food too! Just try our tomatoes, garlic, sweetcorn, meat, fish and seafood and tell us if they don’t taste better – we won’t believe you! Make the most of our eateries serving up local produce in some of the best settings on the south coast of England.

# 4 THE UNIQUE MICROCLIMATE No, you are not going mad, it definitely does feel a bit warmer here. It’s thanks to our unique microclimate which is nowhere more evident than in Ventnor – south-facing and protected in the lee of the high downland that surrounds the town. The Island enjoys an average of over 37 hours of sunshine a week compared to the national average of 29.7 hours.

16 10 Reasons to Visit.indd 1

10 REASONS TO VISIT THIS SUMMER —

#7 WATERSPORTS ARE MORE FUN The Island is 147 square miles surrounded by water - that depending on tide and the wind, is sheltered on one side and ferocious on the other therefore creating the ideal location for a variety of different watersports. You will find many providers ready to get you started and don’t worry if you fall in – it’s all part of the fun!

# 6 NATUR AL WONDERS There are plenty of natural beauty spots on the Isle of Wight but perhaps none more famous than The Needles. These chalk rocks rise majestically from the sea. Once part of the headland, they were separated due to erosion. Possibly the most photographed rocks in the UK, a visit is a must.

# 9 AN E XCITING ARTS AND CULTURE SCENE Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens, Julia Margaret Cameron and Alfred, Lord Tennyson (former Poet Laureate during Queen Victoria’s reign) all found inspiration here. Today, there is a new wave of artists, musicians and creators following their worn path, creating amazing pieces around the Island.

# 8 OUR BE AUTIFUL WILDLIFE Will you spot a red squirrel in Alverstone, a seal at Newtown, a dolphin in Ventnor Bay or our very own species of butterfly – the Glanville Fritillary on a walk along Compton Down? There is so much to spot here on the Isle of Wight, so get out and explore.

#10 PICTURE- PERFECT VILL AGES Our villages are picture-perfect, Instagram-worthy places to visit. For ‘chocolate-box’ thatched cottages, visit Shanklin Old Village or Godshill. Bembridge claims to be the largest village in England, with houseboats near to quirky cottages.

GET YOUR FILL —

Get your fill... The secret is out – the Isle of Wight is a foodie’s paradise through and through. Whether it’s our amazing produce, our eateries in stunning locations, our olde worlde pubs or our beach-front cafés, you will find a slice of paradise right here… PUB GRUB It’s said that there are more pubs per square mile on the Island than any other county, but whether that is true or not, it certainly has its fair share. You will be hard-pressed to visit them all (yet another excuse to return!) For a real wow-sunset spot, The Waterfront in Totland is the top choice. The views over the clear waters as the sun dips below Bournemouth, have got to be one of the most photographed scenes on the whole Island.

LAID BACK DINING There are plenty of laid-back restaurants, bridging the gap between full-on fancy and proper pub, perfect for an evening with friends and family. The Breeze resides at Island Harbour Marina, situated on the River Medina, two miles south of Cowes. Expect a warm welcome for everyone, whether you are a boatowner or landlubber.

island-harbour.co.uk The Cow Bar and Restaurant is one of the most unique places to eat on the Isle of Wight, set in a converted Swiss barn at the heart of Tapnell Farm, near Yarmouth. The restaurant team champions the finest in local produce, with fresh takes on home-cooked gastropub classics, and delicious steaks and burgers straight from the grill.

thecowco.com

Left: Chessell Pottery’s famous cream tea. Right: The Best Dressed Crab has some of the freshest crab on the Island.

STYLISH CAFÉS There are lots of lovely cafés on the Island, some open all year round and some that close for the winter. One that is open all year round, whatever the weather, is The Best Dressed Crab. Quirkily, it’s the Island’s only floating café, based on a houseboat in Bembridge Harbour. You can guess from the name what it’s famous for and the crab certainly doesn’t disappoint.

thebestdressedcrabintown.co.uk Housed in what was once a large department store, Caffé Isola sits right in the heart of Newport, the Island’s county town. The home of Island Roasted coffee (find it on board in our Wight Taste shop) the team serves up a range of light lunches and cakes, all with a distinct Mediterranean flair.

islandroasted.co.uk When you visit The Cow Bar and Restaurant be sure to try the ‘Big Smoke’ burger.

Fans of garlic flock to The Garlic Farm in Newchurch. The chefs create gourmet dishes often (but not always) with a good hint of garlic. Wherever possible, ingredients are sourced locally and they regularly serve their own Garlic Farm-reared Highland beef in the restaurant. The cattle can be seen enjoying the open pastures around the farm.

thegarlicfarm.co.uk If you are in Union Street in Ryde or St Thomas’ Square in Newport, Olivo provides authentic Mediterranean cuisine such as pizza, pasta and risotto dishes. Evenings can be a cosy and snug romantic occasion, or an informal get-together with friends or family.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION The Dell Café enjoys panoramic views across The Solent from its elevated position at Puckpool Sands. There is never a dull moment looking over the water here, you can see cruise liners as they leave from Portsmouth, and in the evening, watch the twinkling lights of the city light up the skyline.

dellcafe.com The view alone is worth it, but it is the cake that keeps people returning time and time again to Blueberrys Café on the Shanklin Cliff Path. Try flavours such as rhubarb and custard or Biscoff then walk it off along the path towards Shanklin. Head to the New Holmwood Hotel in Cowes and bag a seat on the terrace. Overlooking this busy stretch of the Solent, it’s a perfect place for yacht-spotting, people-watching and catching a fabulous sunset in the evening. The Garlic Farm – famous for its garlic but its reputation for its food proceeds it.

SEE THE NEEDLES IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT THIS WINTER

Don’t hibernate this winter, get out and explore the western tip of the Island. Feeling energetic? Love nothing better than getting out there in the fresh air? Then take on the Towering Tennyson walk around the wild western tip of the Isle of Wight. Taking in Alum Bay, The Needles, West High Down and the magnificent Tennyson Down, with views across Headon Warren to the Solent and the mainland beyond. Situated here at The Needles is the world famous Marconi Monument, which marks the precise location where Guglielmo Marconi undertook his pioneering work at the end of the 19th century, which led to radio and all telecommunications as we know it today. Our fully licensed tea rooms are named after the great man himself, as well as our newly refurbished Marconi’s Restaurant. Take time out from your adventures to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or speciality coffee, a range of sinful cakes and pastries and an extensive selection of soft drinks, cold beers and alcoholic beverages.

A global brand pioneer, Liz co-founded (but is no longer connected to) the multi award-winning Liz Earle Beauty Co., before moving on to launch Liz Earle Wellbeing. She is the founder and editorin-chief of Liz Earle Wellbeing magazine (published internationally by Hearst), founder of Liz Earle Fair and Fine, an award-winning range of Fairtrade gold botanical jewellery and hosts the popular Wellness with Liz Earle weekly podcast... My favourite place on the Island has to be Ventnor Botanic Garden with the rich heritage of health and wellbeing, it’s a firm favourite. I particularly love the various secret gardens that are hidden away off the beaten track and you can’t beat the clifftop meadows with breathtaking views of the coastline. Whenever I think of the Isle of Wight I always remember that wonderful feeling you experience as you cross the water to the Island – your shoulders go down and it feels like you are escaping somewhere magical. The Island offers unbeatable beach walks, unforgettable sunsets (particularly on the north side of the Island looking west, where you get the most memorable sunsets as the sky turns sublime colours) and fantastic air quality – which creates the most wonderful microclimate for botanicals and horticulture.

Whenever I think of the Isle of Wight I always remember that wonderful feeling you experience as you cross the water to the Island – your shoulders go down and it feels like you are escaping somewhere magical.

The Isle of Wight has some of the best beaches in Europe. Ryde and Appley are two of my favourites as they offer great views across the Solent back to the mainland. They are both wonderful places to sit and watch the world go by – the Solent is so busy, there’s always something going on, it just plays out in front of you like a theatre.

A great collection of artisans, artists and Island creatives all in one venue. Free Spacious Parking. Enjoy tea, coffee or a light lunch on our renowned Double Decker Bus Café.

The Island also has fantastic local produce – and visiting a Farmers’ Market for fresh, local, seasonal produce is always a must for me. From garlic and tomatoes to chillies and cheese, the Island produces some of the highest quality ingredients in the country.

A SPECIAL PLACE FOR BIRDS —

A special place for birds...

Did you know that the Isle of Wight is an incredibly important place for birds, particularly in the winter? So much so that many of the beaches and estuaries in the north of the Island are internationally designated as part of a Special Protection Area.

So why is this? It’s all down to the Solent, and the shelter it affords, particularly for birds that are on a long migration route. It’s also the combination of habitats – salt marshes, mudflats, grazing marshes and high tide roosts that make it so appealing. Once you understand this, it’s very easy to work out where to go for a spot of high quality birdwatching. Mudflats are full of plant life and small creatures offering a rich larder, but at high tide they are covered over and the birds move on to feed elsewhere or rest onshore in

places called high tide roosts. Salt marshes are frequently flooded by salt water, so are home to many unique plants and animals which can’t be found anywhere else. They also act as high tide roosts, except when the tide is really high. Coastal grazing marshes are really rich with grass, other plants and invertebrates. Our lovely Island has all these habitats, meaning that on a winter walk you can tick off a number of species. We have however, decided to pick four ‘stars’.

A Sanderling often found on Ryde sands come winter.

Sanderlings are a Ryde bird. They can often be found in large groups near the seafront café next to the boating lake. They run around like clockwork toys at the edge of the water and can easily be seen from the Esplanade when the tide is in. They will have flown in from the Arctic. Sanderlings aren’t large birds, only about 20cm long, but they are plump and have a short black beak and black legs. They will be in their pale winter plumage at this time of year. These timid birds are sensitive to disturbance so don’t go too close.

COFFEE SHOP  Homemade Cakes & Lunches - delicious!

On the subject of Ryde Sands – it’s a hotspot for birds, and there are rich feeding grounds under and around the pier. The birds watch Wightlink’s FastCat go in and out and are completely unfazed by the strange beast.

A SPECIAL PLACE FOR BIRDS —

The Solent is the place to be if you are a dark-bellied brent goose. More than 10% of the world population spend their winter here and will have flown in from Siberia. They are small for a goose – not much larger than a mallard and have a white rump and collar. They like mudflats, salt marshes and playing fields, then come inland for fresh drinking water and to clean their feathers. They are usually in large flocks – at Newtown National Nature Reserve these can be well over 1,000 strong. Other good places to spot them are the Bembridge area and Western Yar. The Western Yar is really fab for bird spotting. It’s only three miles long and around 60% of its length is tidal estuary. The old railway line on the east side provides easy access for wheeled users or you can cross over at The Causeway for a circular walk back to Yarmouth. Alternatively continue south to Gift to Nature’s Afton Marsh Local Nature Reserve for yet more birds.

The Isle of Wight is an incredibly important place for birds, particularly in the winter? So much so that many of the beaches and estuaries in the north of the Island are internationally designated as part of a Special Protection Area.

Black-tailed Godwit.

The oystercatchers are very noisy and introduce a sort of Club 18-30 element to the winter avian holiday-makers, squabbling a lot. Some like the Solent so much that they stay here all year, but their numbers are boosted with visitors from Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. They are striking birds – the easiest of our four to recognise – they are large black and white waders, with a long red bill, long pinkish legs and large red-rimmed eyes. The Medina Estuary is a good place to spot them where they like to sit on the floating pontoons by The Folly and watch the boats go by. We have already mentioned the Special Protection Area but that’s just one of six different designations under national and international law that protects it. The cycleway offers easy access along the western bank of The Causeway and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust have been managing coastal grazing marshes especially for the birds. They are also working to protect and restore salt marshes. Gift to Nature’s Dodnor Creek and Dickson’s Copse Local Nature Reserve makes an excellent winter stop-off point. The old mill pond provides an excellent high tide roost, and Dickson’s Copse is an ancient woodland with a number of different bird species as well as squirrels, dormice and bats. If you are very lucky you will spot a peregrine falcon sitting on the power cable ready to take out an unsuspecting pigeon!

Top: Birds in flight over Newtown National Nature Reserve. Below, left: Oystercatcher and right Brent geese.

Our final suggestion to spot is the strangely named blacktailed godwit. Its name is thought to come from the Anglosaxon words ‘god’ and ‘whit’ meaning good creature, which probably means it’s tasty, but please don’t try. It’s quite a

large bird with long legs allowing it to wade out following the falling tide. It has a long beak too – cleverly the females’ beaks are longer than the males’ so that they don’t compete for food. Most black-tailed godwits fly in from Iceland for the winter months, but a few stay on all year. It likes mudflats, wet grasslands and coastal lagoons. The Western Yar is a particularly good place to spot it, as well as the Medina Estuary and Newtown National Nature Reserve. Whilst it is great to go out and watch these wonderful birds, you also need to be very careful. Some of your activities may disturb the birds unintentionally. When the birds are disturbed they stop feeding or worse still, fly away. It can take them a whole day to refuel the energy that this uses. If the birds cannot feed and rest undisturbed, they will not have enough energy to survive the winter and fly back to their summer habitats.

INSPIRATION-ON-SEA —

The Ventnor Giant… A new legend? During the launch of the Ventnor Fringe festival in August 2018, a creature was appearing before the eyes of the community. Where did he come from? Is he rising from the sea, or is he just about to hide under the Island?

On a blank wall at the entrance to the town, the Ventnor Giant, a new piece of artwork by street artist Phlegm, was spray painted. He was created after meeting with the folk at Ventnor Exchange, to reflect the cultural heritage of the Island and Ventnor specifically. It was part of an Island-wide project called ‘Lift the Lid on Island Culture’ which is why you can just see The Needles by his feet, and a few other Ventnor landmarks woven into his cloak.

The mural is one of four new artworks being created as part of Lift the Lid, funded by the Arts Council England, Artswork and the Isle of Wight Council. A multi-channel film installation by Dmitri Galitzine, a piece of community theatre in Pan, Newport from BearFace Theatre CIC and the launch of a community lecture series in Totland from international artist Julie Myers, will all be created to celebrate the unique cultural heritage of the Island in 2019.

Isle of Sweets Wool and Craft Centre Traditional sweets, penny sweets, locally produced gifts. Huge selection of wool from 3ply to Super Chunky. Buttons, patterns, ribbons and haberdashery. Sandown Bay is my favourite place on the Isle of Wight. I love it here because it’s where I grew up and spent most of my childhood down on the beach or in the park, it is such beautiful place to be. There are so many events on the Island that we take part in, but a special one for me would have to be Rhythmtree Festival, it really gives a different feel to a festival on the Island and it is very relaxed and magical. Attending Sandown Carnival at the age of nine dressed as a showgirl shaped my life. From that memory onwards, I have since achieved things and been to places I would never have dreamed of. By taking part with family and friends in the carnival, this has led me on to more experiences. I have never loved being a tiger, horse, swan, butterfly, comet or peacock so much!

Ventnor Botanic Garden

B C D H J L K Honeybourne Jewellery St Catherine’s Oratory, locally known as ‘The Pepperpot’.

Even out of summer, the south of the Island reaps the benefit of its uniquely gentle and temperate microclimate. Add in the artistic heritage that still flourishes here today and you have a vibrant town that attracts visitors all year round. To see the microclimate in all its glory, a visit to Ventnor Botanic Garden is a must. The subtropical and exotic plant collection here is unrivalled. Previously a renowned Victorian health resort, Ventnor resembles a Mediterranean town, with steep, winding hills plus houses and terraces built into the cliffs. There is a distinct ‘arty’ vibe, compounded by the array of boutique and artisan shops, galleries and unique events that take place throughout the year. A visit to the south wouldn’t be complete without a walk through Niton and Castlehaven to St Catherine’s Lighthouse, taking in the beautiful, rugged coastline and changing landscape that the area is famous for. The lighthouse was built in 1840 in response to the need for reliable light to guide shipping, following the shipwreck of the Clarendon in Chale Bay.

TAKING IN VENTNOR —

Taking in...

Ventnor

Ventnor is like no other place on the Island. It could be due to its unique microclimate (more hours of sunshine? Yes please!). It could be the fact that it resembles a mini-Mediterranean town with its winding roads built high up into the cliffs, pavement cafés and azure waters... Or, it could be down to the fact that the town has a distinctly creative vibe, with independent boutiques and artisan shops ruling the High Street. Whatever it might be, it all adds up to make this Victorian town a must-visit. Read our guide to what to see and do when in Ventnor…

You could be in the Mediterranean.

MUST-SEE ATTRACTIONS There are plenty of family-friendly places to visit both in and around Ventnor. Fancy making friends with a donkey, or maybe even 100 donkeys? Look no further than the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary. Free to enter, the centre provides care for unwanted donkeys, horses and ponies. There is a rustic café serving up slabs of cake and cream teas and the sanctuary runs plenty of seasonal events throughout the year so you can delight in donkeys to your heart’s content.

iowdonkeysanctuary.org Just outside of Ventnor and Niton, you will find a land of wonder and imagination at Blackgang Chine. Now in its 176th year, creep through Restricted Area 5; help a damsel in distress in Cowboy Town; make dreams comes true in Fairyland and dive into the Underwater Kingdom.

blackgangchine.com

WHEN HUNGER STRIKES Ventnor is home to plenty of eateries, from pavement cafés, fine dining restaurants, cosy pubs and everything inbetween. A stroll around town will find quirky places such as Cantina – famed for its British food with a Continental twist and its very own bakery - and recently-opened Pulse, the Island’s first vegan restaurant.

TAKING IN VENTNOR —

royalhoteliow.co.uk If a pub is more your thing, they don’t come much better than the iconic Spyglass Inn. Set in possibly the best spot on the Island, it sits right atop the waters of Ventnor Bay. The pub itself is brimming with character and its reputation is founded on good food, great beer and a fantastic atmosphere.

thespyglass.com

TREAT YOURSELF Ventnor has seemed to dodge the influx of High Street stores and chains, and instead offers up a shopping experience packed with independent boutiques, antique shops and quirky emporiums. Honeybourne Jewellery is a destination in itself, with many people travelling to pick up a beautiful handmade piece. The classic enamel range is the most popular, inspired by nature, drawing from the surrounding beautiful deserted beaches and unspoilt woodland, adding seasonal colours.

honeybournejewellery.com Blue Labelle’s flagship store is stocked full of the awardwinning natural skincare that Islanders can’t seem to get enough of. As well as the skincare, you will find a carefully curated selection of Isle of Wight makers including Wyatt & Jack – bags and pouches made from retired bouncy castles and deck chairs; original artwork by Tania Dixcey and Joanne Hummel Newell; original art and ceramics by Kerrie Jane Hearn and prints by Andrew Francis.

bluelabelle.co.uk

Illustration by Katie Rose Design for Ventnor Fringe Festival.

WHAT’S ON The vibrancy of the town is equally matched by its vibrant events scene. The most popular events during the year include Ventnor Fringe, a multi-award-winning arts festival where you can enjoy ‘pop up’ cinemas, basement bars, pianos in the streets, gigs in locals’ houses, mystery tours and intimate church shows.

vfringe.co.uk Ventnor Carnival sees the whole town descend to either take part or spectate, resplendent with carnival queens, brightly coloured floats and Notting Hill-style costumes. Winter time brings Ventnorville, a weekend of festive fun and some naughty going’s-on courtesy of The Grinch.

INSPIRING ARTS There is something in the air in Ventnor that seems to attract those of a creative disposition. Visit Ventnor Exchange for a good example of this. A unique creative hub, it combines theatre, craft beer and a record store, all housed in what was once a telephone exchange and, more recently, a post office. Make sure you check out the latest commission, a huge mural by street artist Phlegm – read the full story on this amazing piece on page 39.

NATURAL BEAUTY

ventnorexchange.co.uk

Sheltered by The Undercliff and with a temperature a few degrees higher, unusual and exotic species of plants and flowers thrive and nowhere is this more apparent than at Ventnor Botanic Garden. Beautifully designed and maintained, the garden showcases landscapes or portraits of ecosystems, combining plants in association with each other as they would be seen in their native, wild environments. Plants that should be found in protective glasshouses bloom and naturalise outdoors. There is a restaurant where you can literally ‘eat the garden’ with the chef making the most of ingredients mere inches away. As you wander around, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the famous wall lizards – research has shown that they originated in Italy but it’s not quite known how they ended up roaming around Ventnor!

You can’t fail to wander around Ventnor and neighbouring Steephill Cove without seeing the work of local artist Katy Rose from Katy Rose Design. Her signature style adorns many a signboard and she created the hand drawn illustration that represented the recent Ventnor Fringe festival. Her design adornes bags, mugs and more.

tregearpottery.co.uk

katythorogood.com In nearby Niton, Tregear Pottery produces a hugely popular and beautiful range of handmade stoneware pottery. Each piece is made from a fine white stoneware clay and hand decorated in a variety of designs – all drawing inspiration and influences from the exceptional beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

My fondest memory whilst growing up on the Island was watching the solar eclipse on Ventnor Downs in 1999. I also got to meet a Great Dane, which is always an excellent experience.

Inspiration-on-sea Aaron Fletcher and Tim Parkin MUSICIANS Card-carrying members from arguably one of the Island’s most famous and well respected bands, The Bees, Tim and Aaron have come together to recreate the magic with their recently formed 77:78. Aaron currently lives in Brighton and Tim lives in Bembridge...

The Chequers Inn offers a traditional pub atmosphere, whilst delivering fantastic fresh tasty food, where we proudly use some of the best produce that the Island has to offer. We are pleased to welcome everyone along to our pub, with a large children’s play area making it a great place for all the family to enjoy. We serve our Sunday carvery from 12-9pm. Also our Sunday breakfast carvery is served from 9-11am. The Chequers Inn is the perfect place to eat, sleep and drink on the Isle of Wight, and also perfect for stopping by for a pint of traditional local ale.

The best place on the Island has to be Priory Bay for family walks along Seagrove Bay and Priory Bay. We like to walk to the far end where the ruined old sea wall is. It’s a lush spot on a sunny day, you could be anywhere in the world. The water is so clear these days. We feel very blessed to have such a beautiful spot on our doorstep. Rhythmtree Festival is definitely the greatest event. We’ve been going for a few years now and have also been lucky enough to perform twice on the main stage. A few years back with The Bees and last year 77:78 played on the Sunday evening. It was amazing. It’s always nice to play to a home crowd. Most of the fondest memories we have of growing up on the Island involves music. A lot of time was spent at the IW Music Centre, The IW Youth Concert Band, as well as playing with quite a few other jazz, pop and soul bands.

PORTSMOUTH —

Portsmouth

Enjoy all the UKs Island city has to offer.

Portsmouth is gearing up for a bumper year – with loads to see and do. 2019 will mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day, and the city has big plans to celebrate this momentous day in history. A whole programme of events is being planned to mark the occasion – not just on 6 June itself, but throughout the year. Keep your eyes peeled for announcements on what’s coming up throughout the year. You don’t have to wait for summer to enjoy some of the most popular events though. In February, Portsmouth BookFest makes a welcome return to venues across the city – featuring talks and workshops with some big names from the literary world, including former MP and bestselling author Alan Johnson. There will also be interactive activities for all ages, plus advice on how to get your story written and published. Also returning in 2019 is the Big Mouth Comedy Festival at Portsmouth Guildhall. Now in its second year, the event welcomes established TV stars alongside some up-and-coming acts currently tearing up the circuit. Initial names for this year’s event (which will run across two weekends) are madcap one-line merchant Milton Jones, TV legend Neil Morrissey and local star-in-themaking Suzi Ruffell.

Victorious – taking place on Southsea Common 23-25 August 2019.

In addition to the events, Portsmouth has world-class attractions open for business all year round. You can enjoy views across the Solent from 100 metres up at the Emirates Spinnaker Tower, walk through centuries of naval history at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard or see the breath-taking Mary Rose – as well as the thousands of artefacts rescued alongside her. Afterwards, recharge with a spot of retail therapy – either among the big brands at Gunwharf Quays, or in the quirky independents along Albert Road.

LYMINGTON & THE NEW FOREST —

Lymington & the New Forest

A herd of fallow deer, the commonly found deer in the New Forest.

Thought you knew the New Forest? Make 2019 the year you think again – and really get to know this truly unique corner of England. As the days begin to lengthen, the woodland and heaths burst back into life, with adorable baby foals, donkeys and deer appearing. Whether you’re coming for a day, a weekend, or a week, the Wightlink Yarmouth to Lymington crossing is the perfect starting point for getting you to the heart of the action.

Petrol heads and appreciators of fine engineering will be in their element at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Or, if you like motorbikes, then visit the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum in New Milton which houses one of the finest collections of fully restored motorcycles in the world.

The area’s fabulous food and drink, 5,000 or so roaming ponies, world-class spas and the thrills, spills and sights of the fabulous family attractions are less than an hour away. The eating places serve locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients, in establishments that have previously hosted guests as diverse as King Charles 1 to Charles de Gaulle, not to mention Sherlock Holmes’ creator, Arthur Conan Doyle. Take a walk on the wild side – there are 193,000 acres of common land to wander over, with herds of deer, foxes, badgers, owls, rare birds, butterflies and reptiles to spot. Bring the bikes over, it’s a cyclist’s paradise with more than 100 miles of off-road cycling routes, many of which are perfect for young children – or try something more adventurous. Whizz through the trees on a zip line at Go Ape near Ringwood. Bringing the car? Then you should have no trouble getting to the major attractions. Tinies will love Peppa Pig World at Paultons Park, whilst older family members will want to try the other 70 rides, like Velociraptor and Magma.

Enjoy over 100 miles of car free cycle trails.

And no plant lover would ever want to leave the New Forest without visiting Exbury, a world-renowned garden described as ‘heaven with the gates open’ (open from March 2019).
