WELCOME —
e b o t e m i t What a . . . d n a l s I e h visiting t Welcome to your winter edition of Wightlife magazine, your essential guide to the Isle of Wight… What a time to be visiting the Isle of Wight. With Christmas just around the corner, there’s magic and a sense of excitement in the air. Winter is a par ticularly beautiful time to visit the Island, with a blanket of frost (maybe even snow) carpeting the countryside. You might also find that you can have many of our stunning beaches all to yourself, save for the odd seagull. It’s also a great time to explore our cycle paths and miles of footpaths. If you’re looking for an Island adventure and a great walk for all the family, read our ar ticle about Re-discovering the ‘Mummies Caves’ on page 30. There are also plenty of seasonal events to get you into the festive mood, with Christmas fairs and markets, while Father Christmas is visiting many of the Island’s best-loved attractions. Visit our independent boutiques for some serious retail therapy or maybe cosy up in a traditional pub with a roaring fire and a glass of mulled wine. You’ll find plenty to inspire you in our Destination Guides on page 44. 2018 has been an especially exciting year for Wightlink with the launch of our new environmentally friendly ship, Victoria of Wight in August. Now in full service, she is the greenest ferry to serve the Isle of Wight and par t of the massive £45 million investment we have made on our Por tsmouth to Fishbourne car ferry route. We look forward to welcoming you on board and wish you an enjoyable visit to our wonderful Island. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It might not be champagne but you can still celebrate with a bottle of specially brewed ‘Victoria of Wight’ from Island Brewery. Buy and enjoy a light, refreshing ale with British Cascade and Bramling Cross hops.

FESTIVE FAIRS AND MORE Throughout the year, there are lots of events on and winter is no exception, all designed to get you into the festive spirit. If it’s the smell of roasting chestnuts that’s guaranteed to get you into that Christmas feeling, then head along to the Victorian Christmas at Osborne. Here, you can experience the splendor of a royal celebration, with traditional games, a carousel and some familiar Dickensian characters as you tour some of the festively dressed rooms or the magical grounds which are lit up after dark.
Get rid of that Boxing Day hangover with a bracing dip in the sea. Raising money for local charities, you can take part in Ventnor, where it seems the whole of the Island descends upon the seafront to either jump in the Channel or watch the spectacle.
Top: A blanket of snow cover Osborne. Middle: Experience a Victorian Christmas. Bottom: Pick up local produce at one of the festive fairs.
For Christmas with a twist, Ventnorville has got you covered. The Grinch, takes over the picturesque town of Ventnor for a weekend. Expect Grinch mischief as well as a winter carnival lantern parade, carol singing in the park, a Christmas market, dog fancy dress and the famous ‘Santa Dash’ across the sands.

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS
FESTIVE FROLICS —
A catch up with old friends, a work party or a grown-up night out, it’s an excuse to crack open a bottle of something tasty. The Island is home to some excellent breweries, vineyards and a distillery, making it easy to ‘go local’. Seasonal favourites include Wight Christmas from Island Brewery, hopped with British Goldings and Bramling Cross hops, with the addition of chocolate malt for that extra Christmas treat; or try a Winter Warmer from Goddards Brewery. A ruby black beer with dried fruit and bitter chocolate malt notes, leading to a rich sweetish, fruity finish. A celebration calls for popping the cork of Rosemary Vineyard Sparkling Brut. Made from Pinot Gris and Seyval grapes, using the traditional fermentation method, it is stored on its lees for a very long time, making it perfect for any special occasion. A roaring fire calls for a glass of full-bodied red. Adgestone Vineyard red is a 2016/17 award winner thanks to its rich blackberry and caramel aroma, combined with a blend of fruit and smoked oak to taste. Nothing beats a seasonal cocktail (or two). Spiced Clemengin combines the flavour of Mermaid Gin from the Isle of Wight Distillery, with the festive notes of spiced clementine syrup, cinnamon and amaretto. Cheers!
Top: Cosy up near a roaring fire. Middle: Tables dressed ready for the festivities. Bottom: Boxing day swim in Ventnor.
LOC AL TRADITIONS The Island has some excellent traditions to get involved in. Take the Southern Vectis Christmas Lights Tour, running between 8th and 23rd December, on alternate nights from Ryde and Newport. The tour offers spectacular views of the Isle of Wight at night and visits some of the Island’s best Christmas light displays. With the bus decked out in tinsel, Christmas tunes playing overhead and Santa behind the wheel, the Christmas Lights Tour is the perfect festive night out.
Experience a ‘Star of Wonder’ at The Needles Landmark Attraction this winter.
Get rid of that Boxing Day hangover with a bracing dip in the sea. Raising money for local charities, you can take part in Ventnor, where it seems the whole of the Island descends upon the seafront to either jump in the Channel or watch the spectacle, smugly wrapped up with a warm flask of tea. Over in Gurnard, you can dip into the Solent whilst raising money for The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

I’VE GOT SKILLS – THEY’RE MULTIPLYING... —
I’ve got skills – they’re multiplying... Whether it’s ferry and relax, glamping in style, cycling with friends or romantic getaways, visits to the Isle of Wight are about having an “experience”. Yet who says these experiences need to be restricted to a new eatery or beach? What about experiencing a drawing class with a botanical artist? Or learning to sail a dinghy like a pro? Some holidays can feel like a dream once they’re over, but by having a studycation and learning something new, you’ll take home an experience that lasts a lifetime – and perhaps a new hobby as well.
SEA SCHOOL eady to redefine your comfort one, activate your mind and energise your body? Wrapped with rugged coastlines and windswept beaches, the Isle of Wight offers some of the s finest schools of the sea. Beginner surf lessons can be booked through mobile surf company iSurf, whose expert instructors will teach you everything you need to know about catching a wave. If you are called to the sea but don’t fancy water sports, check out UKSA in Cowes. Recognised as a world-class provider of maritime training, UKSA boasts a host of sailing, navigation and recreational yachting courses for individuals, couples and groups.

CRAFT COLLEGE With Christmas in the air, there’s nothing more satisfying than learning to make your own handmade gifts. Start your craft college experience by heading to Tiny Homes and stay in a gorgeous Scandi-style studio, next to the ancient woodland of Parkhurst Forest. Choose from a delightful range of workshops which include basket, aromatherapy candle and lampshade making, spoon carving, natural dying and willow weaving. Once you’ve indulged your crafty calling, check out day-long workshops at Jubilee Stores in Newport, where professional artists lead courses in pottery, painting, jewellery and textiles. Fascinated by traditional craftsmanship? Arreton Barns is a thriving community of artisans and makers. Here you can watch glass blowers at work, peruse the workshop of traditional leather makers, create sand art and enrich your knowledge of ancient and modern British crafts.
Studies reveal that life-long learning has a direct impact on our self esteem and confidence, making the holistic-style ‘edu-vacation’ a perfect way to embrace the new year ahead.

AIR AC ADEMY Do you secretly sense you might be Katniss Everdeen? With its panoramic views and undulating downland, Tapnell Farm Park near Freshwater is the perfect place to add a new string to your bow. Based on site, Isle of Wight Adventure Activities have experienced archery coaches offering guidance to help you improve your skills and refine your aim. Once you’ve had the thrill of hitting your target, graduate to axe throwing or clay pigeon shooting. If you can’t get enough of the wind in your hair, explore the range of outdoor learning experiences, including bushcraft, tree climbing and even paragliding.
The Island has inspired artists for centuries and continues to do so. If you are a complete beginner or just looking to ‘brush’ up on your painting and drawing, there’s plenty of courses and workshops to try.
Top: Enjoy a ride on our beautiful beaches. Above: Clay pigeon shooting at Isle of Wight Adventure Activities, Tapnell Farm Park.,
Should you prefer to keep your feet a little closer to the ground (but still embrace exhilarating views), the Island has an array of horse-riding schools for beginner and seasoned riders. Island Riding Centre, a full equipped equestrian centre in the heart of the Island and a great base. You can even bring your own horse on holiday with their livery options. There’s accommodation here for between 20 and 50 people so the whole clan can come along.
CREATIVE CURRICULUM
Tree climbing at Isle of Wight Adventure Activities, Tapnell Farm Park.
Is there a novel in you that’s bursting to get out? Are you longing to write your memoirs but feel unsure of where to begin? Dreaming of writing your family history but scared to put pen to paper? The Isle of Wight has a rich history of writers, essayists and poets, making this the perfect place to come and learn the art of writing. Stay at the Royal Hotel in Ventnor and spend a day or two exploring the atmospheric landscapes of Alfred Noyes author of The Highwayman, Charles Dickens and Victorian poet, Algernon Swinburne. Once you’re feeling inspired, enrol on a writing course at The Grange in Shanklin – a Georgian country house situated a stone’s throw from the place where John Keats retreated to write romantic poetry. The Grange hosts a fantastic range of authors and performers who guide an annual catalogue of writing courses, from life writing to novel writing and even comedy and erotic fiction.

ART ATTAINMENT
I’VE GOT SKILLS – THEY’RE MULTIPLYING... —
The Island has inspired artists for centuries and continues to do so. If you are a complete beginner or just looking to ‘brush’ up on your painting and drawing, there are plenty of courses and workshops to try. Julie Sajous teaches classes in a caravan that she converted into a light and airy studio, in the garden of her Wellow home. Classes cover all manner of topics from colour theory to painting, pen and wash, collage, printmaking and drawing. For traditional painting, try Sophia Flowers who runs a range of classes for all abilities, as well as mini-breaks to the Island, where you can paint beautiful landscape scenes onto canvas. Becky Samuelson offers seascape painting retreats and classes at both The George Hotel in Yarmouth and Bembridge Sailing Club. Budding photographers can make a pilgrimage to Dimbola Museum & Galleries, the birthplace of close-up portrait photography. The former home of photography pioneer, Julia Margaret Cameron. Events include a two-day wet plate collodion workshop with Honza Sakar. Not only would you be using the same antique processes that Julia Margaret Cameron used, but also working in the very place where she created iconic images of Tennyson, Darwin and Herschel.
Some holidays can feel like a dream once they’re over, but by having a studycation and learning something new, you’ll take home an experience that lasts a lifetime
Silent portraits by Honza Sakar at Dimbola Museum & Galleries.
TRANQUILITY TIMETABLE As the New Year rolls in, so does the urge to nourish our health and stretch our bodies. Yet embedding new practices and learning healthy habits can be tricky without some guidance and support. A perfect place to discover tranquillity teachings, yoga workshops and meditation classes is the Wellness Experience at Ventnor Botanic Garden. Design your personal well-being schedule around the classes on offer, timetabling a variety of different yoga styles and intersperse these with walks in the 22 acres of subtropical gardens. For a break with a purpose, book a yoga retreat to the Island. Jenny Stewart, a yoga instructor, has teamed up with fitness coach velyn ichens to create a u ury Wellness Retreat under the name ‘Balance + Glo’. Stay in lu ury sea view accommodation and en oy daily fitness sessions, yoga, cooking workshops, delicious nourishing food and explore our great outdoors. Nettlecombe Farm offers a range of retreats throughout the year. SEE THE NEEDLES IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT THIS WINTER
Join us for a Wight Christmas at The Needles, with the Island’s most famous Christmas Grotto returning for another unforgettable month of magical entertainment. With Santa Claus in residence on the weekends of the 1st and 2nd, 8th and 9th, 15th and 16th, plus 22nd and 23rd December, we’re spreading the Christmas cheer to families across the Island. For more information please see our website.
Don’t hibernate this winter, get out and explore the western tip of the Island. Feeling energetic? Love nothing better than getting out there in the fresh air? Then take on the Towering Tennyson walk around the wild western tip of the Isle of Wight. Taking in Alum Bay, The Needles, West High Down and the magnificent Tennyson Down, with views across Headon Warren to the Solent and the mainland beyond. Situated here at The Needles is the world famous Marconi Monument, which marks the precise location where Guglielmo

Marconi undertook his pioneering work at the end of the 19th century, which led to radio and all telecommunications as we know it today.
Our fully licensed tea rooms are named after the great man himself, as well as our newly refurbished Marconi’s Restaurant. Take time out from your adventures to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or speciality coffee, a range of sinful cakes and pastries and an extensive selection of soft drinks, cold beers and alcoholic beverages.

CRISP, COLD DAYS —
Crisp,cold days
Known for its bucket and spade summer holidays and sunny day visitor attractions, it’s a little known secret that the Island really comes into its own on cold, crisp winter days. There are loads of great things to do for all the family, so get your coats and wellies on and plan a winter adventure!
The Isle of Wight’s beaches are perfect for building sandcastles, paddling and getting sand in your sandwiches, but during the winter months they are scenes of blustery walks. hell collecting and even kite surfing if youre feeling brave enough. The west Wight’s beaches at Compton Bay are brilliant for fossil hunting and rock pooling. You can walk along the beach itself or the cliff path for stunning views to take your breath away. Many of the Island’s beaches revert back to being dog friendly in the winter months, so that’s another great excuse for taking an out of season beach walk. Appley and Yaverland beaches are every pooch’s idea of heaven with plenty of room to run around.
What will you discover on a forest adventure?

CRISP, COLD DAYS —
For more committed walkers and cyclists there are miles and miles of footpaths and cycle routes to tackle, from the strenuous walk to St Catherine’s Oratory (aka The Pepperpot), Britain’s only surviving medieval lighthouse on St Catherine’s Down, to the Red Squirrel rail. A flat route which is ideal if you are cycling with children. You could try some ‘forest bathing’ as the Japanese call it, said to be good for the soul and your general well-being. Take a walk through Parkhurst Forest or Firestone Copse and feel the winter blues slip away. There’s also a woodland walk at Quarr Abbey as well as pigs to feed and a cosy tea shop to enjoy coffee and cake after your exertions. Open all year round, it’s a tranquil place to take a walk and enjoy the countryside, sea views plus you’ll please the pigs and the kids with a £1.20 bag of pig food which you can buy from the tearoom. Visit Osborne, which even in winter is always a treat. The house and grounds are open on Saturdays and Sundays during the winter months and there’s the Victorian Christmas event to look forward to. Osborne pulls out all the festive stops and you can visit the beautifully decorated rooms, as well as enjoying the Victorian traditions of Christmas.
Dogs are allowed on most beaches during the winter.
For amateur historians and those with an interest in the Great Wars, The Needles Old and New Batteries are a must. The Old Battery is a Victorian fort built in 1862 with fabulous views across the Solent and surrounding countryside, which was used during both World Wars. English Heritage has created a brilliant and hugely atmospheric exhibition of how the fort was used and the part that it played in Britain’s modern history. The New Battery tells the story of the ‘race for space’ when secret tests took place on British-made rockets – all very hush hush. The batteries are open at weekends throughout the winter months, as is the 1940s-style vintage tea room.

The Isle of Wight Zoo with its amazing collection of big cats is a great day out at any time of year and the zoo also runs animal experiences for kids and adults alike. Become a junior keeper or go on a big cat or lemur experience to see behind the scenes at the zoo. Animal experiences are available throughout the year. Amazon World Zoo Park provide the best of both worlds, with an array of indoor and outdoor enclosures, so you can duck inside when the weather takes a turn. November sees the opening of the brand new Monkey Madness, an inside soft-play area, perfect for tiring the little ones out. Looking forward, February Half Term will see the return of Robin Hill’s Electric Woods: Spirit of the Orient. With stunning sound and light displays to celebrate Chinese New Year with traditional menus and music to add to the atmosphere.
The Island’s beaches are perfect for building sandcastles, paddling and getting sand in your sandwiches, but during the winter months they’re scenes of blustery walks. Shell collecting and even ite s rfin if o re feelin brave enough.
Top: Quarr Abbey is a must-visit. Above: Casper the lion at the Isle of Wight Zoo.
Of course, there’s nothing nicer at the end of a winter walk or adventure than to end up somewhere with a roaring fire to rest your weary limbs and have a spot of lunch or dinner. he Garlic arm is the perfect place to en oy a log fire and some fantastic cuisine (with garlic naturally). You can stock up on all things allium whilst you’re there. If a pub is more your thing, then The Old Village Inn in Bembridge is a great choice for a warm welcome and a fire as well as an e tensive home-cooked, locally sourced menu with real ales on tap. For a great walk with an even better view, try walking up Culver Down, where you will stumble upon The Culver Haven Inn. Offering tasty, home-cooked food with some of the best views on the Island, its a place to cosy up and watch winter raging outside. The Spyglass Inn also offers refuge from the winter frost. Hunker down with a hot toddy, or brave the outside seating area. The Buddle Inn at Niton offers a great country and coastal yomp, perfect for working up an appetite or on the east side, try The Boathouse in Seaview for a post beach walk drink or two. So don your hat and scarf, pull on your boots and get out there and experience the beauty of the Isle of Wight this winter.

VENTNOR BOTANIC GARDEN
Walkers and cyclists along the Cowes to Newport cycle route have been watching as, in true Indiana Jones style, a complex of brick tunnels and concrete arches have slowly emerged from the vegetation that once engulfed a corner of land by Dodnor Creek.
OVER 33,000 PLANTS & TREES IN 22 ACRES OPEN DAILY FROM 10AM SAT NAV: PO38 1UL
The structures are all that remain of a Victorian factory complex that once occupied the site of the current Vestas Blades factory, but the industrial history of the site goes back to the 1790s when Mr Porter the Pieman of Newport built a corn mill having done well for himself hawking his penny-pies. The building of the mill necessitated the damming of a stream from Parkhurst, thus creating the beautiful creek that we see today. Mr Porter’s milling operation wasn’t very successful, and after undergoing several uses including a prison, the buildings were bought by a Victorian entrepreneur, Charles Francis, for use as a cement mill. It will be a surprise to most readers that the Isle of Wight was at the forefront of Victorian cement production! ‘Medina Cement’ (yes there was such a product) was made from septaria, dredged from the River Medina, and won a bronze medal at the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was particularly quick drying and ideal for marine uses.
Top: Newspaper snippet from days gone by. Above: Aerial shot of Medina Cement, 1926.
Our Plantation Café, is open from 10am daily and serves hot and cold beverages, cakes, hot and cold light lunches, snacks and our own Botanic ales.
Medina Cement was superseded by Portland Cement, and manufacture continued on the site up until World War II. Heritage Lottery Funding has enabled local charity Island 2000 Trust to reveal, explore and stabilise the remaining structures. Most of the work has been carried out by a dedicated team of volunteers and they have also been trawling archives and old newspapers to find out about the lives of the workers.

Alongside the cement kiln site, Dodnor Creek Local Nature Reserve has also had a revamp. This is a mix of wet woodland and open creek, which is a particularly good habitat in the winter for wading birds and ancient woodland. A trail around the Local Nature Reserve affords opportunities to spot owls, red squirrels and orchids.
Mr Porter the Pieman of Newport built a corn mill having done well for himself hawking his penny-pies. The building of the mill necessitated the damming of a stream from Parkhurst, thus creating the beautiful creek that we see today.
Top: Pass Newport Rowing Club on your walk. Above: Dodnor Creek is a haven for nature.
The kiln site will be open on special occasions for guided walks but it can be easily viewed from the cycle route and a new ‘bio-receptive sculpture’ multi-tasks as seating, cycle racks and a home for bees. It has been cleverly designed to reflect the three industrial periods of the site corn milling, cement milling and today’s wind-turbine manufacture. The Local Nature Reserve is open 24/7 and is accessed from the cycle route. Interpretation boards are dotted around both sites, but fuller details can be found at gifttonature.org.uk What of the Mummies Caves? Several of the employees of Vestas Blades, who have been a great partner in this project, used to play on the derelict factory site in the 1970s and 1980s. The dare of the day was to crawl into one of the arches. Would you make it to the other side or would you be eaten by the Mummy? Hence the name. Will you escape ‘The Mummies Caves’?

They started out in wholesale coffee over 15 years ago, importing espresso machines and coffee from Italy and it was a natural progression to learn more about coffee and how it was roasted. They now run two commercial roasters and supply many local businesses, from cafés and restaurants, to destinations across the mainland. Dan works closely with a small group of specialist coffee buyers, looking for direct trade routes where possible. They have been paired with a small producer from Honduras and buy their whole crop. Earlier this year a producer from El Salvador visited and it is their coffee that is used in the blend for Wightlink.

Picture postcard-perfect, Godshill has been attracting visitors for as long as anyone can remember. The ancient parish existed before the compilation of the Domesday Book, when it was known as ‘Godeshulle’... The name refers to the church on the hill - where legend has it that work on the building originally started at the foot of the hill but, overnight, stones were mysteriously moved to the top. It was then assumed that God wished the church to be built at the top of the hill. Today, the church and surrounding village are one of the most photographed places on the Island and on visiting, it’s easy to see why, with its charming thatched cottages and a winding street lined with traditional tea rooms and cosy pubs.

PORTSMOUTH —
Portsmouth
Far more than just a place to catch the ferry, Portsmouth – the UK’s only ‘island city’ – is a destination steeped in history, with miles of coastline to enjoy.
Top: Victoria of Wight at Portsmouth Harbour.
Known for its maritime heritage, no visit is complete without a trip to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where you can trace the origins of the Royal Navy. Step on board the HMS Victory and the HMS Warrior – and even stand in the very spot where Nelson was shot. The famed warship, the Mary Rose, is the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in the world and it’s right here in Portsmouth. If it’s retail therapy you want, then Gunwharf Quays has got you covered. What was once an old munitions store has been transformed into a large shopping centre, specialising in big-name brands at not so big prices. After you have shopped until you are ready to drop, there are plenty of bars and restaurants, many overlooking the marina, to sit and relax in. Make a day of it with the onsite bowling alley, art gallery, cinema and casino. You can’t miss one of Portsmouth’s famous landmarks, The Emirates Spinnaker Tower standing 170 metres high dominating the skyline. From the viewpoint, enjoy 360 degree vistas over Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. For a brew with a view, visit The Clouds, a café that sits 105 metres above the harbour.
Top: Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Above left: Southsea Castle. Above right: City Musuem.
Throw in the culture of the city, including the birthplace of Charles Dickens, two popular theatres designed by revered architect Frank Matcham, as well a vibrant live music scene with regular gigs from household names and it is easy to see why Portsmouth attracts many a visitor.
