The Needles Landmark Attraction is situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a stunning view of the Island’s most famous landmark, the Needles Rocks and lighthouse. From Alum Bay beach (a short walk down 185 steps!) you can get a fantastic view of the amazing multi-coloured sand cliffs that have drawn people to this site since Victorian times. With 21 distinct colours of naturally occurring sand Alum Bay is a unique geological site that has over the years attracted sand collectors world wide. This stunning landscape is so impressive in winter with fantastic walks all around the area, including walks over Tennyson Down and nearby Headon Warren, finished off with a warm welcome at Café Marconi’s serving speciality coffee and teas finished off with a slice of cake.

WELCOME —
Welcome to 2020 on the Isle of Wight Welcome to Wightlife, our guide to enjoying the very best that the Isle of Wight has to offer. This first edition for 2020 is full of anticipation for the coming year and on the Island that always means a packed calendar of events and activities. Personally, I’m looking forward to the Round the Island Race on 30 May, which is the world’s biggest yacht race and a great spectacle for spectators. In fact, it was sailing that first brought me to the Island back in the 1980s and I’ve been asked to share a few more personal thoughts about visiting the Isle of Wight on pages 26-27. As ever, Wightlife looks at many other aspects of this beautiful and diverse Island such as why UNESCO has designated the whole Island as a biosphere reserve. At Wightlink we are working hard to protect the environment – Victoria of Wight our new hybrid energy car ferry is the first in England and sets new standards for lower emissions and quiet operation. Try her out for yourself. Please take some time to look through our guide to this year’s event highlights which you’ll find on pages 84-91, it’s never too early to start planning a return trip later in the year. See you on board!

SANDOWN SPRINT The Sandown Sprint will bring competitive motorsport to Culver Parade in Sandown. It harks back to the days before national speed limits on UK roads and will be the inaugural event of Isle of Wight Speed Trials. Taking place over the weekend of 28–29 March, this new speed event will be one of the first of its type to be held on public roads in England. This follows a change in the law which now allows Local Highways Authorities to suspend the Road Traffic Act and enable motor racing on closed public roads.
Set against the spectacular backdrop of Culver Down in Sandown, spectators will be able to view the event safely from a viewing area, located on the beach seawall revetment.
For more events, see our What’s On Guide on pages 84-91.

A future together If you visit the Isle of Wight regularly or perhaps have a home here, you will hardly need reminding that it’s a very special place. But in 2019, it was recognised by UNESCO (perhaps better known for awarding World Heritage Sites) as a biosphere reserve. For many, this will immediately bring to mind Cornwall’s Eden Project, but a biosphere designation is much more than that and covers the whole Island. The Isle of Wight is one of only a handful of UK regions to be awarded this special status and the first for over seven years. It also covers much of the water surrounding the Island, so you enter the biosphere as you sail across from Lymington or Portsmouth with Wightlink.
Newtown National Nature Reserve is just one of the rich animal habitats the Island is home to.

A FUTURE TOGETHER —
Much of the Isle of Wight is already an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), in the company of national beauty spots like the Chilterns or the Cotswold Hills. Joel Bateman is part of the local AONB team that helped achieve this latest accolade. He explained: “UNESCO has recognised the Island’s very special combination of amazing geology, diverse natural habitats and wildlife. But more than this, it’s how this environment has been enhanced by the people who live here. Producing a wealth of quality, locally-produced food and providing a range of activities from walking and cycling to fossil hunting and stargazing.
The Island became a biosphere reserve in the same year that ‘climate strike’ was named the Collins Dictionary’s word of the year. There’s never been a time when the importance of conserving and living in harmony with our natural environment has been as high profile.
Visit the Island’s largest arts & crafts centre New year, new you. Discover a wide range of accessories, interior furnishings and decor. Getting you and your home ready for the new year.
The Island is great for stargazing with very little light pollution.
“The AONB covers more than half of the Island and highlights the quality and variety of our natural habitats and wildlife. We have our famous red squirrels and woodlands without deer which makes space for dormice and bats of all varieties and the only population of the reddish buff moth in the UK. The biosphere takes this all a stage further; UNESCO looks at how the people who live and visit here work with the natural world to ensure a sustainable future. In particular, UNESCO recognises the Isle of Wight is an area where people actively promote high levels of awareness and understanding about their environment and then find ways to raise involvement throughout the community. It’s also about healthy lifestyles.”

A FUTURE TOGETHER —
Artecology’s vertipools at Wightlink’s Fishbourne port are full of diverse marine life.
Many Isle of Wight organisations and businesses have helped make this happen. The Tomato Stall is a commercial nursery which stood out for the innovative use of technology in the production of its delicious fresh produce. Local ‘environmental impact’ company Artecology has been working in partnership with Wightlink to create ‘vertipools’. These provide spaces, between the low and high tide marks, that allow nature to thrive within the ferry terminals, that would otherwise be relatively urbanised parts of the coast. The award-winning vertipools now provide sustainable homes for 29 marine species including fish, shellfish and crabs.
Wightlink’s environmental officer Nicola Craig commented: “As a marine scientist, I’m amazed at the biodiversity in our vertipools and I was proud to learn that Wightlink has been the first company to install them. I’m sure our customers and staff would be astounded to see the richness of marine life beneath the waves.” There are a great many other examples like these, which UNESCO felt underlined why the Isle of Wight was worthy of becoming its latest biosphere reserve. On its own website, it acknowledged that the Island had a long tradition of promoting environmental initiatives. UNESCO summarised its ecological and socio-economic findings as follows: The Isle of Wight represents a unique assemblage of species. It is a nexus between the northernmost point for some species and the southernmost for others, for example the Glanville fritillary butterfly is found in abundance on the southern cliffs of the Island, yet is exceptionally rare elsewhere in Britain. The Isle of Wight woodlands are unique in the UK for the co-existence of stable populations of red squirrels, hazel dormice, Bechstein’s and barbastelle bats in woodland which is not influenced by deer or grey squirrel.
Local award-winning producers The Tomato Stall uses innovative technology in its production process.
The Isle of Wight has a number of distinct economic strengths, including a strong, modern manufacturing sector, plus a healthy level of self-employment and microbusinesses, many of which are attracted by the quality of place offered by the Island. These, allied to the visitor economy and the offer to tourists, provide the opportunity for sustainable growth.

The Island became a biosphere reserve in the same year that ‘climate strike’ was named the Collins Dictionary’s word of the year. There’s never been a time when the importance of conserving and living in harmony with our natural environment has been as high profile. It’s an enormous achievement for the whole Island to receive this international endorsement, providing a well-deserved pat on the back for everyone who has been hands-on over the years. Hopefully it will inspire us all to get out and actively enjoy everything the Isle of Wight has to offer whilst appreciating the effort required to protect and maintain it for the future. Finally, it celebrates that the effort of many individuals and organisations working together really can make a recognisable difference.

Festival Focus Gone are the days when you could think that the Island was only open for the summer season... Here at Wightlink, we are big supporters of our local events, some of which have grown to become highlights on the national scene, and we are always on the lookout for the latest, fledgling addition as we have a feeling that it’s going to be good – well they don’t call it ‘Festival Island’ for nothing! So get your diary out and take a look at our round-up of what’s happening in 2020, you won’t want to miss it…

THE ISLE OF WIGHT WALKING FESTIVAL 2-17 May OK, so not quite rock and roll (we’ll get to that) but this is a great festival to get to know the Island and even if you visit here every year, or have lived here all your life, there is, mysteriously, always a path or bridleway you haven’t yet discovered. There’s long walks, short walks, in-between walks, walks with little kids, walks with dogs and those all-important walks that finish at a pub. You’ll discover coastal paths, wander in the woodland and take in the breathtaking scenery all around you. The festival also includes the famous Walk the Wight (it’s the 30th year in 2020) and the Isle of Wight Challenge where you can walk or run (yes, we have seen people do this) around the coastal perimeter of the Island.

FESTIVAL FOCUS —
Yes, it’s the biggie. The Isle of Wight Festival attracts tens of thousands of people every year. The oldest festival in the UK (it started way back in 1968 before having a mammoth break between 1970 and 2002 when it was revived) it has seen some of the biggest names in rock and pop music history grace its stage. The Isle of Wight has been treated to the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who, David Bowie and Fleetwood Mac as well as stellar performances from Jay Z, Pharrell Williams, David Guetta and George Ezra. This year will see a diverse line-up of artists including Lionel Richie, Lewis Capaldi, Snow Patrol, The Chemical Brothers and Duran Duran performing. Many revellers enjoy wandering around the site and finding all the little hidden venues and one-off parties, where you might stumble across a rapper performing with a brass band, or a ‘Sock Wrestling Federation’ and everything in between!
The famous Isle of Wight Festival.
RHYTHMTREE FESTIVAL 10-12 July Possibly the Island’s best-kept secret, Rhythmtree has been quietly winning over fans for 11 years now. Family is at the heart of the festival, from the plenty of kids in attendance to the family ethos behind the guys who run it, it’s one big party that everyone can enjoy. The weekend has an unsurpassed reputation for bringing together a diverse, rich mix of high-quality music and family entertainment, with 2020 being no exception. Held in beautiful, treesurrounded farmland, close to the West Wight Heritage Coast and offering free camping for the weekend, it’s easy to see why this festival isn’t quite so secret anymore. Family favourite Rhythmtree Festival.
VENTNOR FRINGE FESTIVAL 28 July-2 August There’s a bumper sticker you can buy in Ventnor, it says ‘Keep Ventnor Weird’ and we think Ventnor Fringe does exactly that and more. This multi-award winning arts festival offers such an array of entertainment in some of the most unique venues on the Island. Where else can you enjoy ‘pop up’ cinemas, basement bars, pianos in the streets, gigs in locals’ houses, mystery tours and intimate church shows? The whole town comes alive to enjoy this amazing event that celebrated a whole decade of being weird in 2019. Who knows what to expect for 2020? But we know one thing, we won’t want to miss it, whatever it is.
THE GREAT WONDERFEST 6-10 August
Keep Ventnor weird and don’t miss the Ventnor Fringe Festival.
Another one that only cropped up last year (we did say the Isle of Wight is known as ‘Festival Island’!) The Great Wonderfest shot onto the scene with a bang, thanks to a line-up for the whole family to enjoy and a cracking bit of camping on-site at Duxmore Farm thrown in. The first year saw stars such as Dick and Dom, Busted, The Vamps and Sigma and whilst the tweens and teens were occupied, parents enjoyed a bit of Mista Jam and the Dub Pistols. This year promises to be even better, with plenty of active entertainment (zorbing anyone?) and well-being workshops too, meaning there really is something to keep everyone happy.

SEE THE NEEDLES IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT THIS WINTER
Don’t hibernate this winter, get out and explore the western tip of the Island. Feeling energetic? Love nothing better than getting out there in the fresh air? Then take on the Towering Tennyson walk around the wild western tip of the Isle of Wight. Taking in Alum Bay, The Needles, West High Down and the magnificent Tennyson Down, with views across Headon Warren to the Solent and the mainland beyond. Situated here at The Needles is the world famous Marconi Monument, which marks the precise location where Guglielmo Marconi undertook his pioneering work at the end of the 19th century, which led to radio and all telecommunications as we know it today. Our fully licensed tea rooms are named after the great man himself, as well as our newly refurbished Marconi’s Restaurant. Take time out from your adventures to enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or speciality coffee, a range of sinful cakes and pastries and an extensive selection of soft drinks, cold beers and alcoholic beverages.

JACK UP THE SUMMER 7-9 August For a feel-good factor, Jack Up The Summer has it in spades. This retro music festival will have you dancing like no one’s watching and whether you know the music from the decade or are just discovering it, you are bound to enjoy this party atmosphere. This family-friendly throwback festival celebrates the upbeat, hand-clapping sounds of yesteryear, with party hits from chart-topping acts from the 80s and 90s. Although not mandatory, fancy dress is positively encouraged, plus it’s the perfect excuse to dig out your neon 80s and 90s glitz and glam.
There’s a bumper sticker you can buy in Ventnor, it says ‘Keep Ventnor Weird’ and we think Ventnor Fringe does exactly that and more.
Getting in the garlic spirit at the Garlic Festival.
THE GARLIC FESTIVAL 15-16 August Whether you’re a lover or a hater, you can’t miss this garlic-themed celebration! Set against a beautiful backdrop of rolling green hills and farmland, the Garlic Festival is located just outside of Newchurch. The show is food and entertainment at its very best, with a vast array of eats, treats, sights and sounds to suit all tastes and ages. Expect garlic and food marquees (the clue really is in the name), cooking demonstrations from top Island chefs in the theatre kitchen, children’s entertainers, archery and a giant funfair. Enjoy hundreds of arts and craft stalls and scrummy produce to tempt your taste buds. Plus, live music on the big stage, a big beer tent and straw bales so you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
For a full round-up of events for 2020, don’t miss our What’s On Guide on pages 84-91, or visit wightlink.co.uk/explorer Don your leg warmers for Jack Up The Summer.

When on the Island... Keith Greenfield with
A chartered engineer with a background in transport and telecoms, Keith Greenfield was appointed as the CEO of Wightlink in 2016. Born and raised in Lancashire, he is a keen yachtsman and has been a regular visitor to the Isle of Wight for the last 30 years. We asked him to share his favourite Island memories and places with us...

WHEN ON THE ISLAND: KEITH GREENFIELD —
“My first memory of the Isle of Wight is probably arriving on a small sailing boat at Cowes when I was a student so that’s the 1980s – I was amazed to visit the birthplace of yachting as a sport. There are so many great places to stay on the Island. I like The Royal Hotel at Ventnor, it feels like stepping back in time in a nice way with some great walks and I especially like walking to Steephill Cove. The Seaview Hotel is very cosy and has electric car charging which I think is important these days and there are some great B&Bs dotted around the Island.
One of the finest Roman sites in the United Kingdom Beautifully preserved mosaic floors, an extensive collection of archaeology and a Roman garden & meadow trail all set within AONB • Licensed café • Shop
The Round the Island Race reaches The Needles.
My favourite café is Caffè Isola in Newport. I am a bit of a coffee snob and Dan and the team at Island Roasted roast some great coffee which we also serve on Wightlink ferries.
Due to popular demand the Winter Warmer deal is back in the Forum cafe. Come and enjoy a main meal and homemade traditional pudding for just £9.95 all whilst looking out on the beautiful wintery views across the Bay. Also serving breakfast until 11.30am daily and a selection of cakes and scones throughout the day.
The Island has a full calendar of events, but I always look forward to Cowes Week and have competed several times. I think Robin Hill’s electric woods events are a great innovation and I really enjoyed the Isle of Wight Festival in 2018. I want to do the Beer and Buses weekend next year… so many events! I am a regular competitor in the Round the Island Race, which is always an incredible day, and it is great to watch from the shore too.
The Island has a huge variety and a more accessible coastline than anywhere I know of. For me, what makes the Isle of Wight such a special place is the unique environment and the coastline. Compared to the mainland, the Island has a huge variety and a more accessible coastline than anywhere I know of, but I also remember what a lovely surprise visiting the interior of the Island was for the first time – it’s so beautiful. The Island also has loads of history from fossils through to Roman villas, Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne and lots of other fortifications. There is so much to discover I am not surprised visitors keep coming back.”

Signs of the times Churches on the Isle of Wight are many and varied, but mostly they are located at the very heart of town and village life. They help us to understand more about local history, as well as providing a starting point to explore the Island further. Old or truly ancient, large or small, they have fascinating stories to share.
Here we look at just five churches which contrast in age and style, a couple date back to Saxon and Norman times whilst one (despite its appearance) was only built in the 20th century. They are all located in different parts of the Island and have fascinating legends and anecdotes to bestow alongside more established facts. It’s an opportunity for some peaceful reflection, maybe followed by a walk through their surroundings and beyond.

GOD’S PROVIDENCE All Saints, Godshill Having graced innumerable tourism adverts, chocolate box lids and jigsaw puzzles – as well as this edition’s front cover – All Saints in Godshill is perhaps our most photographed church. It has an idyllic position high above the thatched cottage of the old village of Godshill, which itself is nestled into the rural heartland of the Island. Local legend holds that the original church foundations were laid out on a site within the village, but that each morning they’d been moved to the top of the hill. Eventually, the builders accepted it as divine intervention and that the church should be built on the hill.
Fact: One of the stained glass windows is by William Morris.

It’s not often that a church designed by the eminent architect John Nash is torn down, especially if someone just didn’t like it much. However, that someone was Queen Victoria who used the church regularly when she was resident at Osborne. She found it too small and didn’t much care for how it looked either. So the church was rebuilt to a new design with some assistance from Prince Albert himself. Unfortunately, the Prince died before the church was completed in 1862, so it was probably never a place that Her Majesty truly enjoyed. The church is full of impressive memorials to Albert and many other members of the royal family and if you are visiting Osborne, it is well worth taking the time to visit.

The Island’s only thatched church is younger than it first may appear.
NOT AS OLD AS IT SEEMS St Agnes, Freshwater Bay
IN-SPIRED WEBC AM All Saints, Ryde
The only church on the Isle of Wight with a thatched roof is, however, far from being the oldest. The land was donated by the son of famous resident and Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson who lived nearby at Farringford. It incorporates stone from a nearby derelict farmhouse and despite a date stone showing 1622, it was actually completed in 1908. If you’re feeling energetic, then complete your Tennyson experience by walking up the nearby down named in his honour and visit the Tennyson Monument. It is situated high above the sea, halfway between Freshwater Bay and The Needles.
Possibly the first thing any visitor sees from the deck of the Wightlink Portsmouth to Fishbourne ferry or FastCat is the spire of this great church which rises 56m (186 feet) and dominates the skyline of Ryde, the Island’s largest town. It was designed by Sir Gilbert Scott who also counted the Albert Memorial and St Pancras Station amongst his portfolio of high Victorian Gothic architecture. It was described as “the finest parish church in the south of England” in the Ward Lock Guide of 1919 which underlines why a visit is more than worthwhile. After enjoying the church, walk down through the town of Ryde to the beach and maybe take a promenade along the pier.
Fact: Tennyson built his own bridge to access the downs to avoid being mobbed by his fans.
Fact: A live webcam is located at the top of the spire providing panoramic views of the Solent – isleofwightwebcams.co.uk/solent-webcam
BEHIND THE TIMES St Boniface Old Church, Bonchurch Perhaps being separated from the mainland meant that Islanders were practically the last people in England to be converted to Christianity. The Isle of Wight can be set in its ways and in the 8th century, legend has it that Saint Boniface played a key role in this conversion. By all accounts, he preached in Bonchurch from the Pulpit Rock, once a visitor attraction in its own right. The old church (there is also a new one built in 1872) is Norman in origin and dedicated to St Boniface which is also the name given to the down that towers over this part of the Island.
Fact: Boniface was named by Pope Gregory II, he was previously called Winfrith. Island churches are worthwhile visiting and there will be several within a short walk from wherever you are staying. Always remember that these churches are places of worship, so please be respectful when you visit. Known as Queen Victoria’s church – St Mildred’s, Whippingham.

MORE THAN JUST A PUB
Returning to the Isle of Wight for an appearance at Shanklin Theatre in February, Michael was a regular visitor to the Island as a child and shares his memories of the Island with us here... “The Isle of Wight has a special place in my heart because my family holidayed there each summer between about 1958 and 1963 when I was aged 5 to 10. We stayed in Ventnor at the Hillside Hotel. I don’t think I’d been to a hotel before and so the experience is etched in my mind. In a very oldfashioned way it provided three meals per day, all served at the table. So there I had my earliest lessons in etiquette: how to unfold a napkin, the proper use of a soup spoon (pushing towards the back of the bowl with the bowl tilted back) and the importance of laying down the knife and fork parallel to each other on the plate ‘north to south’, to signal that one had finished eating. The proprietor and his wife served at all meals. I think they were Mr and Mrs Plumridge.
01983 531314
www.newinniow.co.uk
I also learned consideration for others when Mr P. came up to our bedroom (I shared with a brother) one evening to remonstrate about the noise that we were making. The hotel was built into the hillside and its grounds were an adventure playground for us. We were very much into being commandos at that time, and the wooded slope was an excellent terrain for disruptive activity against the ‘Nazis’. The annual adventure began with a tube train from our suburban London home to Waterloo Station, train thrillingly passing the Houses of Parliament down to Portsmouth Harbour, ferry to Ryde and steam train to Ventnor. I cannot tell you how exciting I found the steam train. The small locomotive panted metallically when not in motion. In the tunnel under St. Boniface Down the carriage filled with smoke. The Isle of Wight railway was the highlight for me each year and when I return to the Island, riding the line is my priority, even though the former London Underground rolling stock does not uplift in the way that steam did. From the Hillside Hotel there was a steep descent to the seafront. There was a paddling pool where you could sail small models, navigating around a large representation of the Island. I fell into the water my first day there, probably because that early lesson in geography had me gripped. I ate baguette-style sandwiches (another first for me) on the beach with the pier in the background. In the evening we were allowed doughnuts and to play certain slot machines, which featured the glamour figures Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner.

Relax, recharge and refresh Blow away the cobwebs with a cliff top walk.
After the fun and frivolities of Christmas, the start of the New Year often brings with it a need to reflect on health and well-being, not just in terms of fitness, but also from a mental health and mindfulness perspective. The Isle of Wight is the perfect place for getting away from it all. Just a short ferry ride from Portsmouth or Lymington and you can feel that you’re a world away from the stresses of daily life – ready for some much-needed ‘me time’. Whether you’re looking to blow away the cobwebs with a beach walk or a scenic trail run over the downs and through the countryside, there are plenty of places to get active – both indoors and out. From well-equipped gyms and fitness studios through to miles of cycle paths and even water sports centres, there really is something for everyone. However, if you’re after some rest and recuperation and a spot of pampering is required, our guide will help you find some of the Island’s best health spas and salons who will take care of you from top to toe! It’s not just for the beginning of the year either, the Island has plenty of exercise opportunities to offer throughout the year. May is chock-full of events, kicking off with the Isle of Wight Walking Festival at the beginning of the month and the Running Festival at the end, with the Randonnee (which sees over 3,000 cyclists following a clockwise route around the whole of the Island) sandwiched in the middle. For something a little more holistic, The Awakening Festival returns to the Island on 6-7 June and offers a weekend full of well-being, self-care and conscious living workshops. You’ll find a full calendar of events on pages 84-91 – just look out for the Sport & Activities and Wellness symbols.

Working for a plastic-free Solent Nelson, the Final Fat Fish, ready to collect used plastic bottles and aluminium cans.
At Wightlink we continually look for new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and as part of our Green Agenda, we aim to have clean water in our ports with thriving marine life by inspecting our quays and shores every day and removing any rubbish.
In June 2019, the team launched ‘Nelson’, the Final Fat Fish! Known affectionately as Nellie, the whopping six-metre-long metal fish is made entirely from scrap metal – wheel arches, boat trailers, warehouse trolleys and chicken wire – and is transported around the Solent area, visiting festivals, parks and towns. The idea is simple, the public fills Nellie up with their used plastic bottles and aluminium cans, illustrating just how many disposable items are used and the huge volume of waste they create.
A plastic bottle can last for 450 years in the marine environment, slowly fragmenting into smaller pieces which eventually end up microscopic, but never truly go away. Thankfully, we’re not alone in this mission, and there are some brilliant companies working together across the Solent to tackle plastic pollution. Started in Emsworth, Hampshire, Final Straw Solent has one clear aim – to reduce the amount of single-use plastic ending up in the marine environment and making its way into precious ecosystems and endangering wildlife. They work with pubs, cafés and restaurants to encourage them to stop offering plastic straws and cups to customers.
Left: Wyatt and Jack turn waste inflatables into fashion accessories. Right: Founder Georgia Wyatt-Lovell.
Nellie recently spent some time at Wightlink’s Gunwharf car ferry port collecting discarded inflatables for Island-based company Wyatt and Jack as part of their ‘Inflatable Amnesty’ project. She made a special journey to the Isle of Wight on board Victoria of Wight to deliver her precious cargo – becoming one of our most unusual passengers! Wyatt and Jack create sustainable bags and accessories from the salvaged beach inflatables, as well as upcycled deckchair canvas and broken bouncy castles – turning them into covetable, fashionable objects instead of heading to landfill.

Ticket to Ryde
In association with Ryde Town Council
From golden sands to boutique shops, Ryde has it all.
Often referred to as the ‘gateway’ to the Island, Ryde is home to Wightlink’s FastCat port, transporting foot passengers to and from Portsmouth via the world’s oldest seaside pleasure pier. Opened in 1814, you can uniquely walk, cycle, drive, and even get the train down the pier which links up with Island Line services to Shanklin. With the bus station situated right on the esplanade, Ryde is the perfect place to start your Island exploration. The bustling town has lots to offer, from a wealth of modern independent shops and boutiques to the many Regency and Victorian buildings. It’s popular year-round for its golden sandy beaches, which stretch from Players Beach in the east, past Ryde Harbour, all the way to Appley Beach with its castellated folly tower, and the Victorian fortifications at Puckpool Park in the west. Take a stroll along Union Street, where you’ll find skincare companies jostling for space with fashion boutiques, as well as galleries and jewellery shops for both new and antique gems. Continue uphill and the independents make way for traditional high street retailers, but don’t worry, despite the hike, there are plenty of cafés, bakeries, and restaurants to quench your thirst and keep hunger at bay. North
The north is home to possibly the most well-known town on the Island. Famous around the world for sailing and regattas, Cowes is a lively town, even during the colder months. Take a stroll along the High Street and you will find many boutique shops, eateries and pubs with live music, where the locals will be warming up. From here, why not enjoy a bracing walk along the seafront to the neighbouring village of Gurnard and take in the stunning views across the Solent towards Fawley? Gurnard is a pretty little village, with a couple of pubs, a post office-cum-coffee shop and a peppering of picturesque beach huts lining the esplanade.
“It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot” — Queen Victoria The River Medina cuts through the north of the Isle of Wight splitting Cowes and East Cowes, with a floating bridge serving as a crossing between the two. East Cowes boasts one of the Island’s most revered attractions – Osborne. It was here that Queen Victoria based her holiday home and spent many happy years with her family.

NORTH EAST —
North East This bustling area is known as the ‘gateway’ to the Island, with both Wightlink’s vehicle ferry and FastCat routes from Portsmouth operating here. Renowned for its miles of sandy beaches, the north east’s coastline offers some excellent walking routes for the whole family – including dogs (allowed on many beaches from October until the end of April). Ryde is a Victorian town complete with an impressive pier, the oldest in the UK. The town has plenty of entertainment on offer, including a bowling alley, swimming pool, amusement arcade and many popular cafés and restaurants. For shopaholics, a trip along Cross Street and down Union Street, visiting the unique shops and boutiques that line the streets, is a must.
“There was a Young Lady of Ryde, Whose shoe-strings were seldom untied. She purchased some clogs, And some small spotted dogs, And frequently walked about Ryde.” — Edward Lear A pretty Edwardian sailing village, Seaview can be quieter out of the summer season, but has a strong local presence. The Seaview Hotel is a great spot to stop and warm up it’s one of the Island’s most popular foodie destinations.

INSPIRATION-ON-SEA: NICOLA CRAIG —
Nicola Craig, Environmental Officer, Wightlink
Marine Environment Science specialist Nicola joined Wightlink as the ferry company’s first Environmental Officer in June 2018. A keen Solent dinghy sailor, her role focuses on environmental compliance and how to make our operations as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible, through regular audits of all the ships and ports. “Although I’m based at Wightlink’s head office in Portsmouth, I escape when I can and make it over to the Island at least a couple of times a week! Sometimes when auditing on board I end up doing several round trips a day. One of my favourite places on the Island is Ryde beach. I spend time at all of the ports, and do like to be able to take my lunch break on Ryde beach when it’s sunny. Despite living on the mainland, it’s probably my nearest sandy beach. I have to say my favourite event on the Island is the Cowes Classic Week. The weather was lovely last year, so I enjoyed sitting on the beach, watching the beautiful yachts sail by. I studied at the University of Portsmouth and first came to the Island in 2013 on a field trip. We went to several towns and villages along the north-eastern and south-eastern coast. We were mainly looking at the geology and geomorphological features and also went to Dinosaur Isle. If I only had an hour on the Island, I’d probably visit the West Wight. Yarmouth is a lovely quaint little town with a bustling marina and the Yar estuary is home to an abundance of wildlife.”

Harvested in a simple and natural way, Wight Salt is a rustic pleasure and a foodie delight. The seawater is drawn from Wheelers Bay in Ventnor and filtered into low lying tanks inside polytunnels, where the water evaporates slowly, leaving white crystals. Available in over 30 stockists on the Island, as well as some of the Island’s top pubs and restaurants.

“She thinks of nothing but the Isle of Wight, and she calls it The Island, as if there were no other island in the world” — Jane Austen, Mansfield Park Bembridge lays claim to being the largest village in England, and whether this is true or not, it is surprisingly busy. Take a walk around the harbour, admiring the various houseboats, some of which you can stay in, and there’s even one that is a floating café!

INSPIRATION-ON-SEA: DAVE FAIRLAMB —
Dave Fairlamb, Owner, Natural Links Following a career in nature conservation spanning nearly 40 years working for charities including the National Trust and the RSPB, Dave has recently launched his new business, Natural Links, specialising in Wildlife Tourism and Nature Conservation Consultancy. “I have always loved islands, having been a reserve warden on the Farne Islands in my younger years. The Isle of Wight has it all, stunning landscapes stretching from the tidelines to the tops of the downs, a rich array of habitats and a wealth of wildlife. My favourite place is Culver Down, it is such an impressive sight walking towards the towering cliff from either Bembridge or Sandown. It feels wild yet it is accessible and the coastal scenery is beautiful – and there’s a real ale pub on the top! Magical. There are so many excellent events on the Island throughout the year, but two stand out for me; The Walking Festival and the increasingly popular Classic Buses, Beer & Walks Weekend. Both offer a chance for everyone to explore this wonderful Island. My very first visit to the Island was not until April 2018, by the Christmas of that year I was living here! How is that for positive impact? From crossing the Solent and setting foot on the Isle, it was obvious that this was a special place. As a life-long avid birdwatcher, I would savour every moment of one hour on the Island at any time of year by walking the paths of Brading Marshes and Bembridge Harbour and lagoons. The variety of birds to be seen in this area is exceptional. Breeding bitterns and marsh harriers in summer, huge flocks of wildfowl and waders in winter, and a migration hotspot in spring and autumn with species such as bee-eater, cattle egret and yellow-browed warbler seen this year, this is a real gem of a birdwatching site.”

South Even out of summer, the south of the Island reaps the benefit of its uniquely gentle and temperate microclimate. Add in the artistic heritage that still flourishes here today and you have a vibrant destination that attracts visitors all year round. To see the microclimate in all its glory, a visit to Ventnor Botanic Garden is a must. The subtropical and exotic plant collection here is unrivalled. Previously a renowned Victorian health resort, Ventnor resembles a Mediterranean town, with steep, winding hills plus houses and terraces built into the cliffs. There is a distinct ‘arty’ vibe and award-winning street art, compounded by the array of boutique and artisan shops, galleries and unique events that take place throughout the year.
“This island is a little paradise” — Karl Marx A visit to the south wouldn’t be complete without a walk through Niton and Castlehaven to St Catherine’s Lighthouse, taking in the beautiful, rugged coastline and changing landscape that the area is famous for. The lighthouse was built in 1840 in response to the need for reliable light to guide shipping, following the shipwreck of the Clarendon in Chale Bay.

INSPIRATION-ON-SEA: WENDY MARSHALL —
‘Womble’ Wendy Marshall, Beach Cleaner Originally from Wimbledon, Wendy has become well-known across the Isle of Wight for her litter-picking around the South Wight, earning herself the nickname ‘Womble Wendy’. Along with partner Don and Pistache the dog, the Ventnor Wombles team are up at the crack of dawn in all weathers to help keep the seafront clean for locals and visitors alike. “After annual holidays on the Isle of Wight from the age of three, I decided in my teens it was my ambition to live here. Great Uncle Bulgaria Coburg (leader of the Wimbledon Wombles) also agreed to send me here to set up and run Ventnor Wombles. My favourite place on the Island has got to be The Undercliff from The Landslip to Blackgang Chine, but especially Windy Corner and Gore Cliff at Niton. It’s so peaceful along there and at one with the elements and nature. There are so many Island events to choose from each year, but I always look forward to Chale Show, the Isle of Wight Festival and Wolverton Manor Garden Fair. My earliest memories are from our holidays at Niton when I was a youngster and visiting Blackgang Chine. So much fun and laughter running around and exploring! If I only had an hour on the Island, I would go to Ventnor Downs – the views of the town are fantastic from up there. I’d sit with a Mermaid Gin and elderflower tonic water and my thoughts.”

West The most unspoilt, less populated side of the Island, the West Wight offers a wealth of activities. Explore Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Trust coastline and forests, or search for fossils on the Jurassic beaches. The area has inspired many artists, scientists and poets, most notably Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate during Queen Victoria’s reign. His family home, Farringford in Freshwater, has recently been restored to its former glory. The Island’s most iconic landmark is a must-see. The Needles and Alum Bay with its coloured sands create a stunning backdrop. Visit The Needles Landmark Attraction for a day of fun activities. The historic market town of Yarmouth is Wightlink’s point of arrival in the West Wight and sits at the mouth
“...come to the Isle of Wight: Where, far from the noise and smoke of town I watch the twilight falling brown All round a careless-order’d garden Close to the ridge of a noble down” — Alfred, Lord Tennyson of the River Yar. It boasts some of the Island’s oldest architecture, including the 16th century Yarmouth Castle. Stroll along the Grade II listed pier for some of the best views across the Solent, or explore the town, built around a traditional market square, with several popular eateries and shops.

INSPIRATION-ON-SEA: EMILY STROUD —
Emily Stroud, Community Engagement Officer, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Community Engagement Officer for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Emily is a keen surfer and climber. As a marine biologist, she works closely with Wightlink on the National Lottery Heritage Funded ‘Secrets of the Solent’ project. “Because of my job I get to spend a lot of time outdoors working alongside local people. The Island’s wildness and beauty really captivate me. In particular, its rugged coastline that conceals crucially important marine habitats and species. The people here inspire me too – they dearly love their wildlife. My favourite spot on the Island is a toss-up between Colwell Bay and Compton Bay. As part of the project ‘Secrets of the Solent’, we run public intertidal surveys and the marine wildlife there is astounding. For me, hands down my favourite event is ‘Under the Pier’ at Ryde. Locals and holidaymakers come together to explore under Ryde Pier during a super low tide. The stunning seagrass beds get exposed and it’s a great opportunity to show people the wonders of the marine world. My first time on the Island was during ‘Walk the Wight’ for Earl Mountbatten Hospice. It was a gloriously sunny day and I was taken aback by the splendour of its green rolling hills and stunning beaches. I remember thinking ‘Oh man, I’d love to live here!’. If I only had an hour on the Island I would head towards Ventnor and explore the beaches there. Maybe track down a locally-caught crab sandwich and munch on that whilst enjoying the scenery. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to explore that part of the Island.”

Portsmouth
The Portsmouth skyline across the water from Seaview.
2020 promises to be a huge year for Portsmouth – with some big events and a few new openings coming up over the next 12 months. Whether you’re a regular visitor or haven’t stopped in the city for years, there’s sure to be something on the horizon to pique your interest.
The HMS Prince of Wales carrier – sister ship to HMS Queen Elizabeth – arrived at its home port of Portsmouth at the end of 2019. These huge carriers always draw a crowd when they sail in or out of port, and it’s expected that the Prince of Wales will be no different – bringing people out to marvel at the feat of naval engineering every time it takes to the open water.
The D-Day Story welcomes LCT 7074 – the only surviving Landing Craft (Tank) to have played a part in D-Day – as a brand new attraction. The vessel is enormous, having been large enough to transport ten tanks and scores of crew members across the Channel. This new addition to Southsea seafront is a result of the National Museum of the Royal Navy securing National Lottery Heritage funding, so it could return the craft to Portsmouth for a huge renovation and conservation project. You can see the fruits of this work when the LCT opens in summer. If you can’t wait that long, the ship’s arrival will be an event in itself – with it being sailed across to Southsea from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, hauled up the beach and finally rolled into position.
The D-Day Story building.
Even if you can’t make the big events, don’t miss your chance to see Portsmouth in the beautiful winter light. From strolls along the seafront to gentle walks around the cobbled streets of Old Portsmouth (where lovely little pubs are nestled right on the seafront), it’s a great time to enjoy a trip to the city. If all that wasn’t enough there are also the regular annual events, including Victorious Festival, Portsmouth Festivities, the Great South Run and loads more besides. Selfie by HMS Warrior at Por tsmouth Historic Dockyard.
Portsmouth will also host a number of commemorative events for the 75th anniversary of VE Day this May. Keep watch on visitportsmouth.co.uk for all the details on what’s happening to mark the occasion.
Take a look at visitportsmouth.co.uk and wightlink.co.uk/explorer for full details on everything coming up in 2020.

Lymington & the New Forest
Ever feel like you’re being watched? A herd of fallow deer in the New Forest.
There’s no better place to blow away the winter cobwebs than in the thousands of magical acres of woodland, heath and coastline around Lymington and the New Forest. You’ll find endless walking trails and car-free tracks where you can enjoy a peaceful bike ride or kick-start your new fitness regime. Discover just why forest bathing (walking and breathing the energy-charged air in the woodland) is so calming to the soul. Or take your time to mindfully seek out the deer and roaming ponies and the forest’s other amazing creatures, and feel the stress roll away.
Or try SenSpa at Careys Manor near Brockenhurst – their treatments and Zen-like atmosphere are all inspired by the beauty regimes and philosophy of Thailand.
Discover, too, one of the New Forest’s best-kept secrets – its amazing spas! Some of the UK’s best-rated spas lie within its boundaries, offering new and holistic treatments to raise the spirits and calm the mind.
The Pig, New Park Manor, Rhinefield House and Balmer Lawn hotels all offer luxurious and individual spa experiences. Or treat yourself to some 5 star pampering at Chewton Glen’s spa, which offers 50 blissful treatments.
There’s nothing like getting out on the water!
And remember, many spas have treatment rooms for two – perfect for that special Valentine’s trip. Nothing’s more romantic than getting away to somewhere different – and the forest’s hotels and restaurants offer many special deals for 14 February and the surrounding days. This month also sees half-term and along with the magnificent woodland, there are plenty of amazing spaces and places in the New Forest for young ones to let off steam.
Relax by the pool and enjoy 5 star pampering at Chewton Glen’s spa.
The Herb House Spa at Lime Wood Hotel is inspired by its magnificent surroundings. Their indoor hydro pool has a view of the treetops and they offer outdoor yoga on their rooftop garden as well as world-class treatments such as Sarah Chapman facials.
Take them on a paddling adventure up the Beaulieu River. Or check out the half-term offerings at Paultons Park – now rated the UK’s favourite family theme park on TripAdvisor. Beaulieu Motor Museum and Marwell Zoo – just a 40-minute drive away – also have lots of wonderful things for families to do.
