WELCOME —

A Wight wonderland...

With the nights drawing in and Christmas on the horizon, the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ presents the Isle of Wight in a very different light... John Keats wrote those famous lines perhaps having been inspired by the Isle of Wight after living here for a number of years in the early 1800s. As the bustle of our main summer season gives way to something more reflective and relaxed, there is still so much of the Island to enjoy. Autumn and winter are marvellous for walking and cycling – more often than not you can enjoy spectacular views and beautiful beaches all to yourself at this time of the year. There are always many events and attractions to enjoy. Our What’s On Guide (from page 84) is packed with quirky and unusual entertainments. These include the unique Beer & Buses event in October, Hallowe’en and Bonfire Nights, as well as all the joys that Christmas brings. Osborne, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and The Needles Landmark Attraction are all firm favourites at this time of the year. Wherever you explore and however you decide to enjoy the Isle of Wight, thank you for choosing to travel with Wightlink.

The Dark Side of the Wight Considered to be one of the most haunted places in the world, the Isle of Wight certainly has more than its fair share of ghosts, ghouls and mysterious tales. People have been researching paranormal activity here for decades and, as Hallowe’en approaches, the scare-factor steps up a gear as the Island plays host to many creepy events, guaranteed to get you screaming. Read our guide to having a spooktacular time on ‘Ghost Island’. But be warned, you may need to sleep with the light on...

THE DARK SIDE OF THE WIGHT —

FRIGHTENING FOLKLORE OR JUST PL AIN FICTION? When discussing ghosts of the Isle of Wight, it is unlikely that a conversation won’t include at least one of our local experts. Gay Baldwin first began researching the Island’s ‘other’ residents back in 1977 when working for the local paper. What started as a story soon became a lifelong passion and now, eight ghost books later, Gay remains the definitive authority on true, local supernatural encounters. Her first book, The Original Ghosts of the Isle of Wight, has sold over 100,000 copies since its release in 1977 and can be found in many a local’s home. This collection of genuine stories, told first-hand, have become ingrained in the Island’s ghost-lore and have inspired one of the Island’s most popular spooky events… The Isle of Wight Ghost Experience.

THE ISLE OF WIGHT GHOST E XPERIENCE

Founded by local resident Marc Tuckey, inspired by Gay Baldwin’s encounters, the Isle of Wight Ghost Experience has been running for over two decades and produces a range of immersive guided ghost tours around some of the Island’s most supernatural hotspots. Grisly, well researched historic tales play out in street theatre at various locations including Ventnor Botanic Garden, Newport, Shanklin Old Village and Carisbrooke Castle. There is always a special programme of events for Hallowe’en too.

iwghostexperience.co.uk

“There are so many unanswered questions and although I have been investigating stories and researching the subject for many years, I have some theories but no real answers. One thing is certain however the world is not as it seems.” — GAY BALDWIN

The gate posts from Knighton Gorges are all that remain of the old estate.

TERRIFYING TALES One of the most well known and probably the goriest tale, is that of Michael (also known as Michal or Micah) Morey in 1737. Resenting his 14 year old grandson – who was considered very handsome and had recently come into some money – Morey’s patience ran out when the boy was late with his dinner. He taught him a lesson with his axe, killing him instantly. Morey was hanged and his corpse left to rot on the gibbet at Gallows Hill, near The Hare and Hounds, until it became “an offence to eye and nostril”. The gibbet-post, complete with a notch cut in it beside the date of his execution, can be seen in the pub and the spirit of Michael is said to roam nearby. Knighton Gorges near Newchurch is said to be the most haunted place on the Island, with many a car said to stop of its own accord when driving past late at night. A pair of gate posts are all that remain of the old manor house, said to be home to murder, suicide and insanity. Ghost watchers have reported a coach and horses thundering down the driveway, strange stone creatures on the pillars and, upon each New Year’s Eve, the old house itself is said to reappear, to the sound of music, laughter and general revelry.

Ventnor National Cottage Hospital where Ventnor Botanic Garden is today.

Perhaps the most unusual tale took place at Billingham Manor, still standing today as a private home. A notable manor house, it welcomed many guests over the centuries including King Charles I, who is said to have ridden out to the manor from his captivity at Carisbrooke Castle to discuss escape plans with then owners, the Worsley family. More recent guests include Sir Shane Leslie, Irish-born diplomat, writer and first cousin of Sir Winston Churchill, in the late 1920s. After many ghostly goings-on, the finale of his stay occurred when, having been woken by noises in the night and going to investigate, he and the household found a sliding panel in the dining room (the house had smuggling connections and many secret stairways and rooms) through which a strange light glowed. Upon sliding open the panel, it is said that everyone in the room saw the apparition of the severed head of King Charles I! This apparition has been seen more than once and was suggested to coincide with an Island execution. Sir Shane Leslie checked and, on the date of his sighting, a convicted murderer had been hung at the local prison...

Explore the Spooky Castle at Carisbrooke this autumn.

EERIE EVENTS As the spookiest time of the year approaches, you will find plenty of frightening fun to be had. For those die-hard scare fans, the brand new ‘Terror Island’ at Blackgang Chine looks set to scare the living daylights out of even the most hardened non-believers. With three new scare attractions; The Blood Shed, Amphibious and Hexcavation, this is not one for the faint-hearted and comes with a 16+ age rating.

Smaller visitors will enjoy ‘Frights and Sprites’ with plenty of themed activities including Hallowe’en crafting, a boo maze and a special Hallowe’en quest.

blackgangchine.com The Isle of Wight Steam Railway has Hallowe’en all wrapped up with Wizard Week and Fright Night. The former is fun for all the family, complete with magic shows and a treasure hunt. Fright Night offers the unique experience of taking a night-time train ride as you board the ‘ghost train’ through the Island’s deserted countryside, passing darkened woodland and desolate fields. Dress up in your scariest costumes and take a trip down to the colour-changing Haunted Forest and Woodland Creep.

iwsteamrailway.co.uk With a dramatic setting, Carisbrooke Castle is ready to set your imagination alight. Wander around the grounds with the Victorian ghost hunters, as they tell you macabre tales of times gone by. Don’t forget to pass by the graveyard and discover how its occupants met a very gruesome demise.

WALKS AND WHERE TO GO Pack up your pooch, wrap up warm and take a stroll along Seagrove Beach. Located on the north-east side of the Island, it’s known as the ‘go-to beach’ for dog walkers. There’s ample parking, soft sand for delicate paws and even a café, Lily’s, where you and your best friend can refuel. Freshwater Causeway is perfect for family strolls as the flat pathway makes it accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Your four-legged friend will love exploring the hedgerows and meeting other friendly walkers. If you fancy a bite to eat the popular Red Lion pub is a great pit stop and muddy paws are welcome.

COFFEE SHOP  Homemade Cakes & Lunches - delicious!

Where paws meet hooves, the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary positively encourages you to bring your furry friend – they’re part of the family too, right? WOOF AWARDS —

A BIG WELL DONE TO… Food and tourism businesses work hard to make dogs feel welcome, but Wightlink also wanted to recognise those who make a difference that you don’t see every day with the following awards: •

Isle of Wight Dog of the Year – Toby the reading dog

Isle of Wight Dog Person of the Year – Carol Court of Ability Dogs 4 Young People

Best Isle of Wight Dog Business – All Canines Great & Small

We all know the power of positivity that our four-legged friends bring to our lives, but 15 year-old bearded collie Toby goes the extra mile. He has helped raise funds for charity and served as a Pets As Therapy (PAT) dog but now spends his twilight years visiting Ryde Academy each week to listen to children read and boost their confidence.

Hebe Gregory of Off The Rails receiving their award presented by Phil Cracknell from IW County Show.

E AT AND STAY Looking for accommodation and wondering if you can take your canine pal with you, look no further than Luccombe Manor. With exceptional service, doggies are at the heart of the service provided.

“Doggy towels at the door, a special dog dining room and a breakfast sausage for the dog. Super dog-friendly staff.”

“Toby is an inspiration and a wonderful dog ambassador. His unconditional respect and rare talent makes him one in a million.” — LOU I S E LE A , WIG HTLI N K PR & BR AN D MANAG E R

It can be tricky finding somewhere to eat with your pooch. Do they welcome dogs, what if they’re a bit muddy? Off The Rails in Yarmouth has a menu specially designed for canines in mind, they even serve dog-friendly ice cream, so when it comes to dessert, everyone’s happy.

Judge Paul James Marshall presenting an award to Toby, winner of 2019 Dog of the Year (and owner Trisha Owen).

A huge thank you is deserved for everyone involved in training ability dogs but Island resident Carol Court goes the extra mile. Ability Dogs 4 Young People plugged a gap for assistance dogs for disabled children and young people on the Island. Working tirelessly she ensures all dogs linked to the charity are cared for in the best way. Keeping dogs takes some responsibility. Laurence and Pat at All Canines Great & Small offer a variety of services for dogs including behaviourist training, seminars on aggression, health and safety, dog first aid plus more. They give much of their time and knowledge for free to dogs in need. Our tails are wagging with joy for all the winners. Well done… Woof! Luccombe Manor is super dog-friendly so bring the pooch along too.

Ferry Happy Birthday It’s been a year since Wightlink’s £30 million flagship Victoria of Wight arrived at her home port of Portsmouth after a voyage of more than 3,000 miles from the Cemre Shipyard in Yalova, Turkey. Captain Tom Vincent was at the helm for the final part of the journey. He remembers: “The weather was awful on the day with torrential rain and strong winds as we entered the harbour. All the crew were relieved that our new hybrid energy flagship was safely home.”

Victoria of Wight entered service at the end of August 2018. Powered by hybrid energy, from a combination of batteries and conventional engines, she can carry up to 178 cars and more than 1,000 passengers on every crossing. Wightlink Chief Executive Keith Greenfield says: “Twelve months on, Victoria of Wight is now a valuable addition to our fleet. Everyone who crosses the Solent on her is impressed by her comfortable and panoramic lounges, spacious outside decks and impressive green credentials.”

Victoria of Wight is turning one!

There is room at the inn

What’s better than on a blustery autumn day or after a chilly winter walk than cosying up by the fire in one of the many great pubs the Island has to offer? Your experience of our wonderful inns does not have to stop at the bar, as many characterful pubs offer accommodation throughout the year. We thought we’d start you off with a few suggestions of where you might like to stay... THE SPYGLASS INN This multi-award-winning pub sits at the end of Ventnor Esplanade and has one of the most spectacular views, not only on the Island, but quite possibly in the UK (now that’s an accolade).

The Spyglass Inn, Ventnor 01983 855338 thespyglass.com

A traditional pub where all are welcome from children to dogs to muddy walkers. Cosy up with a pint of local ale by the fire or take in the wintry sea landscape… it does not disappoint no matter the time of year. When staying at The Spyglass there are four self-contained apartments, each with views of Ventnor Bay. On arrival you’ll receive a breakfast hamper which you can prepare in your own kitchenette. Dogs aren’t excluded either as they are welcome in the Gun Deck apartment.

Five fun things to do for the under-fives Often, it’s the littlest ones of the family that have to fit in with everyone else’s plans and tag along to wherever the bigger kids fancy. But there is plenty to keep everyone amused, no matter what age, at our top picks for the under-fives‌

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is a great day out for all the family.

FIVE FUN THINGS TO DO FOR UNDER-FIVES —

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is a great place to visit, whether you are three or 103! Take a step back in time to days gone by when steam trains powered the Island. Take a ride through the autumnal countryside, stop at the perfectlypreserved stations and make sure to visit the Train Story Discovery Centre, bringing the history of the railway to life before your eyes.

Make friends with the donkeys at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary.

All are welcome at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, including your four-legged friend. Home to 97 donkeys and 26 ponies, all of whom are either rescued or abandoned, you can’t help but feel a warm glow in your heart as you wander around the 55 acres of countryside in the Wroxall valley. Enjoy leading a donkey, tucking into a slice of cake in the café and keep your eyes peeled for their regular programme of fun events.

All children (and bigger kids too) love a good sweet shop. Add in the fact that you can get crafty at the same time and you’ve found your perfect pit stop. Isle of Sweets in Shanklin does exactly that. Here, you can let the little ones make slime to their heart’s content (without any of the clearing up after) as well as other crafts, whilst tucking into an array of retro and penny sweets, as well as hot and cold drinks.

isleofsweets.com If collecting treasure keeps your little ones occupied, then treat them to a visit to Jurassic Jim. This fossil shop is a treasure trove of goodies with some incredibly rare finds on display. Get a fossilised Megalodon tooth to take home, or some beautiful crystals and minerals, all found by Jim and his team. Jim himself is an amazing storyteller and you will find his tales fascinating, plus, if you want to have a go yourself, he will give you pointers on the best places to find your own fossils.

jurassicjim.com No trip to the Island is complete without a visit to The Needles Landmark Attraction, and it’s no exception for the youngest of visitors. There is plenty to do, from traditional Victorian games to an interactive 4D cinema experience. Watch one of the fascinating displays, including glass blowing, sweet making and sand filling and, if the weather permits, the chairlift ride is an absolute must.

Independent Shopping

Find a treasure trove of independent shops in Shanklin Old Village.

High Streets are the heart of any town and those on the Isle of Wight benefit from an abundance of locally-owned shops which are characterful and distinctive. Exploring the Island’s network of independent retailers is a great way to discover new places and you are bound to find a fantastic and often unique gift or souvenir. Many of the shops featured in this guide specialise in hand-crafted items that you simply won’t find elsewhere. Away from the traditional High Street are places like Shanklin Old Village or Godshill which both share a chocolate-box-like appeal of thatched cottages as well as a myriad of boutiques and shops to enjoy. There are also plenty of places to eat and drink so they are a great destination for the day. Talking of destinations, many of the places listed actually feature multiple outlets all on the same site so it’s easy to spend a morning or afternoon chatting to the owners and browsing.

ON THE BUSES... —

MORE THAN JUST A PUB

‘Beer & Buses’ is an Isle of Wight success story. In just its sixth year, it stands out in the Island’s autumn events calendar as being a home-grown phenomenon with an audience of devoted fans that’s been growing year-on-year... Its official title is the Isle of Wight Classic Buses, Beer & Walks Weekend, but from the outset it has been universally and affectionately known simply as ‘Beer & Buses’. This year it takes place over the weekend of 12-13 October with an amazing 85 classic coaches and double decker buses expected to take part. The reason for its growing popularity isn’t perhaps hard to understand. The heart of the event brings together two aspects of the Isle of Wight which residents and visitors alike find equally appealing; a love for nostalgia and great pubs. The buses travel around the Isle of Wight following a special timetable and stop at more than 120 pubs, clubs and venues. So it couldn’t be easier to get involved over the weekend, wherever you’re staying on the Island. This is the event that comes to you, right to your doorstep if you’re lucky, and can even drop you home afterwards.

“Beer & Buses takes place over the weekend of 12-13 October with an amazing 85 classic coaches and double decker buses expected to take part.”

All the classic buses are free of charge to ride on, but you really should buy a programme to support the event. These cost just £7 for the entire weekend and provide you with an essential guide to all the pubs as well as the bus routes and timetables. You can purchase your programme online before the event or from any participating pub. With your programme in-hand, you just need to decide where to start and which pubs you fancy visiting in order to plan out your route. If this is your first experience, then a relaxed approach is recommended, so don’t try to pack too much in. The concept of planning can vary tremendously. On one hand you can just follow your nose and go where you fancy, this is ideal if you are not too bothered where you end up and how you get there. Each day can evolve at its own pace and become a proper adventure.

ON THE BUSES... —

Add the Isle of Wight Steam Railway to your Beer & Buses route this year – you won’t be disappointed.

Alternatively, many people enjoy fully timetabling their day or weekend, often it’s the bus rides that are prioritised over the pubs or the route. Of course, most will probably end up doing something between the two, start with an idea of where you want to go, but be prepared to change your mind as the day develops. Lots of folk enjoy travelling around in groups so a bit of flexibility will almost certainly be required.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is fully involved in Beer & Buses and it is well worth adding it to your schedule. Assuming that you’ve done the right thing and purchased a programme (you should have one each) then you can travel free on the steam train between its station at Wootton (on Route W) and the main station at Havenstreet, where it is hosting a Beer Festival on both days.

Because of the event’s popularity, it’s worth bearing in mind that sometimes the bus you are planning to catch might be full. Our advice is to be pragmatic and just jump on a regular service bus instead. Local bus company Southern Vectis do a great offer just for the weekend, you can buy a four day Rover ticket for £15, which allows you unlimited travel from Friday to Monday. Also don’t forget the local trains. Island Line operate from Shanklin through to Ryde which can be a great way to jump ahead to another part of the Island or get you back closer to home at the end of the day.

Beer & Buses organisers Bill Ackroyd of the IW Bus Museum and Tim Marshall of the IW branch of CAMRA.

The Mermaid Bar in Pondwell is also home to the Island’s only distillery – pop in and try the spirits!

There are 19 scheduled bus routes in operation over the Beer & Buses weekend which allows the fleet of classic buses to cover the Island. From Alum Bay in the west to Bembridge in the east and Cowes in the north to Ventnor in the south. All the services are hubbed via Newport Quay and the IW Bus Museum in Ryde with a shuttle service in operation all day. All the Island’s main towns are on one route or another, as well as numerous villages from Hulverstone, Gurnard and Totland to Pondwell, Arreton and Whitwell, so there’s no limit to the places you might want to visit and you’re guaranteed a lovely pub to enjoy when you get there.

ON THE BUSES... —

Here are a few Beer & Buses tips: • Buy a programme before you start, it’s packed with essential information. • Planning to arrive on the day with Wightlink? Both Yarmouth and Ryde Esplanade are on classic bus routes, so you’ll waste no time. • Think about using the local buses, trains and steam trains as well as the classic buses which at peak times can get very full. • There are a number of special walks designed for the event including Historic Beer Walks, details can be found on the event’s website. • Many pubs are holding mini beer festivals and offer special discounts on beer and food, so make sure you check your programme. • Be courteous at all times to the bus drivers. They are all volunteers and providing the bus services at their personal expense. • Keep one eye on your watch as time flies when you’re having fun. Beer & Buses, or The Isle of Wight Classic Buses, Beer & Walks Weekend, is organised by the local branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) and the IW Bus Museum. Wightlink is offering a special 20% travel discount to the Isle of Wight for this event, full details are in the official event programme or online at wightlink.co.uk/beerandbus Dene Culver

The Bargeman’s Rest on Newport Quay holds an annual beer festival to coincide with the Beer & Buses event with over 12 guest ales available to try.

Harvested in a simple and natural way, Wight Salt is a rustic pleasure and a foodie delight. The seawater is drawn from Wheelers Bay in Ventnor and filtered into low lying tanks inside polytunnels, where the water evaporates slowly, leaving white crystals. Well rounded with a hint of sweetness, Wight Salt is fast becoming a staple with a growing number of chefs and food lovers. North

The north is home to possibly the most well-known town on the Island. Known around the world for sailing and regattas, Cowes is a lively town, even during the colder months. Take a stroll along the High Street and you will find many boutique shops, eateries and pubs with live music, where the locals will be warming up. From here, why not enjoy a bracing walk along the seafront to the neighbouring village of Gurnard and take in the stunning views across the Solent towards Fawley? Gurnard is a pretty little village, with a couple of pubs, a post office-come-coffee shop and a peppering of picturesque beach huts lining the esplanade.

“It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot” — Queen Victoria The River Medina cuts through the north of the Isle of Wight splitting Cowes and East Cowes, with a floating bridge serving as a crossing between the two. East Cowes boasts one of the Island’s most revered attractions – Osborne. It was here that Queen Victoria based her holiday home and spent many happy years with her family.

North East

This bustling area is known as the ‘gateway’ to the Island, with both Wightlink’s vehicle ferry and FastCat routes from Portsmouth operating here. Renowned for its miles of sandy beaches, the north east’s coastline offers some excellent walking routes for the whole family – including dogs (allowed on many beaches until the end of April). Ryde is a Victorian town complete with an impressive pier, the oldest in the UK. The town has plenty of entertainment on offer, including a bowling alley, swimming pool, amusement arcade and many popular cafés and restaurants. For shopaholics, a trip along Cross Street and down Union Street, visiting the unique shops and boutiques that line the streets, is a must. A pretty Edwardian sailing village, Seaview can be quieter out of the summer season, but has a strong local presence. The Seaview Hotel is a great spot to stop and warm up, it’s one of the Island’s most popular foodie destinations.

A passionate steam enthusiast, Geoff is a volunteer signalman at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and is responsible for authorising and controlling the safe movement of all trains on the Railway. “After living and working in Croydon, South London, for many years, the more genteel pace of life on the Island was one of the main reasons for (semi) retiring over here. Now living in West Wight, my most favourite place has to be the seafront at Totland Bay. There is nothing like going for a walk with my wife on the seafront between Totland Bay and Colwell Bay – with a possible stop for coffee on the way. Being a lifelong steam buff, my favourite event has to be the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s Steam Show, this is closely followed by other events such as Steam Punk weekend and Christmas week with the Santa Specials.

My earliest memory of the Island is coming over for holidays with my parents. I was about 10 when we first started coming over – 58 years ago – and even then there was always so much to do. If I only had an hour to spend on the Island and I was on my own, I would obviously recommend a visit to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. However, if my wife was with me, I would probably be persuaded to visit Godshill with its myriad of ‘olde worlde’ shops and restaurants.” Wightlink has been a long-standing supporter of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and often transports steam locomotives across the Solent. It also enables the Railway to host a successful annual events calendar, an essential element of its ongoing sustainability.

East

The east side is famed as a bucket and spade holiday destination and is great to visit any time of the year. Stunning walks, cosy pubs and great indoor activities combine making this a great destination for all the family... Shanklin sees chocolate-box cottages mix with golden sandy beaches to create one of the most popular destinations on the Island. The ‘picture-perfect’ Old Village is a must-visit. Pretty tea rooms sit alongside traditional shops and it is also home to Shanklin Chine, the Island’s oldest attraction at over 200 years old. Sandown is packed with entertainment for all ages no matter the weather. Visit Sandown Pier, home to a bowling alley, amusements and mini golf. For an animal adventure, visit the Isle of Wight Zoo and its famous tigers, or prehistoric animals at neighbouring Dinosaur Isle.

“She thinks of nothing but the Isle of Wight, and she calls it The Island, as if there were no other island in the world” — Jane Austen Bembridge lays claim to being the largest village in England, and whether this is true or not, it is surprisingly busy. Take a walk around the harbour, admiring the various houseboats, some of which you can stay in and there’s even one that is a floating café!

INSPIRATION-ON-SEA: DEREK CURTIS —

Derek Curtis, Owner, Amazon World Zoo Park Owner of one of the Island’s most successful attractions, Derek is a true cockney. He grew up amidst the hustle and bustle of London, before owning a successful building company. “I was drawn to the Island because of its beauty, from its rolling hills to its golden beaches. It also has a great community to live and work in – everyone is so friendly and helpful. One of my most favourite places is on top of the downs looking over towards Sandown. It is so peaceful up there. My wife and I often stop to admire the view. For such a small Island, there are so many great events throughout the year, but the one I always look forward to is the Scooter Rally in August. The ride out is a great spectacle to watch. I have always been a mod! My earliest and fondest memories of the Isle of Wight are of visiting with Sandra and friends before we had our two sons, who are now in their forties. We visited several times before moving over in the early nineties. If I only had an hour to spend on the Island, I would have to say, go to Amazon World Zoo Park. My blood, sweat and tears have literally gone into this place. Much more than just a business, it is my hobby, my passion and my drive.”

South

Even out of summer, the south of the Island reaps the benefit of its uniquely gentle and temperate microclimate... Add in the artistic heritage that still flourishes here today and you have a vibrant destination that attracts visitors all year round. To see the microclimate in all its glory, a visit to Ventnor Botanic Garden is a must. The subtropical and exotic plant collection here is unrivalled. Previously a renowned Victorian health resort, Ventnor resembles a Mediterranean town, with steep, winding hills plus houses and terraces built into the cliffs. There is a distinct ‘arty’ vibe, compounded by the array of boutique and artisan shops, galleries and unique events that take place throughout the year.

“This island is a little paradise” — Karl Marx A visit to the south wouldn’t be complete without a walk through Niton and Castlehaven to St Catherine’s Lighthouse, taking in the beautiful, rugged coastline and changing landscape that the area is famous for. The lighthouse was built in 1840 in response to the need for reliable light to guide shipping, following the shipwreck of the Clarendon in Chale Bay.

Discover more things to do at wightlink.co.uk/explorer The coastal path between Ventnor and Bonchurch is accessible for buggies and wheelchairs too.

The most unspoilt, less populated side of the Island, the West Wight offers a wealth of activities... Explore Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Trust coastline and forests, or search for fossils on the Jurassic coast beaches. The area has inspired many artists, scientists and poets, most notably Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate during Queen Victoria’s reign. His family home, Farringford in Freshwater, has recently been restored to its former glory and is open to the public for booked tours. The Island’s most iconic landmark is a must-see. The Needles and Alum Bay with its coloured sands create a stunning backdrop. Visit The Needles Landmark Attraction for a day of fun activities. The historic market town of Yarmouth is Wightlink’s point of arrival in the West Wight and sits at the mouth

“...come to the Isle of Wight: Where, far from the noise and smoke of town I watch the twilight falling brown All round a careless-order’d garden Close to the ridge of a noble down” — Alfred, Lord Tennyson of the River Yar. It boasts some of the Island’s oldest architecture, including the 16th century Yarmouth Castle. Stroll along the Grade II listed pier for some of the best views across the Solent, or explore the town, built around a traditional market square, with several popular eateries and shops.

Bill Ackroyd and Tim Marshall, Organisers, Beer & Buses

Bill and Tim join forces each year to help organise the popular Isle of Wight Classic Buses, Beer & Walks Weekend. Now in its sixth year, the event takes place on 12-13 October. Tim: “I’m a semi-retired professional musician and as such spent a lot of time travelling. The Island is a wonderful place to come home to after working away. Bill: I love the Island for the peace and quiet, and lack of traffic. Tim: My favourite place on the Island has got to be the top of Culver Down. There are spectacular views, even when it’s dark (with the lights of Portsmouth)... and of course there’s a pub! Bill: For me, the views along the Military Road are hard to beat.

Tim: My fondest memory of growing up on the Island is beachcombing with my Dad and brother on what we used to call ‘Ladder Chine’ near Chale. Bill: My earliest memory of the Island is coming on holiday to Sandown, staying at the Savoy House Hotel in 1956. Tim: If I only had an hour on the Island, I’d probably go to the pub of course! I’m not brave enough to name one specifically. Bill: I’d have a pint of Fuller’s ESB in King Harry’s Bar, Shanklin.”

Dan Burgess, Owner, Caffè Isola & Island Roasted Owner of artisan coffee producers, Island Roasted, and Caffè Isola, Dan is also an integral member of the Rhythmtree organisational team. Island Roasted supply the Wight Taste outlets on board Wightlink’s ferries and at our ports.

“The great outdoors and scenery make the Island a great place to live, it’s ideal for kids to grow up and families in general. My favourite place on the Island has got to be St Boniface Down, the view from there on a clear day is amazing. My favourite event has to be Rhythmtree – but then I am a little biased! It is a great family festival, there’s nothing quite like it. Growing up on the Isle of Wight, we practically lived on the beach during the summer holidays, as there are so many water sports you can do here. In the winter we’d go on long walks with the dog or bike rides. If I only had an hour on the Island, I’d probably go paddleboarding on Newtown Creek, or go on a bike ride with the family through The Undercliff from Niton to Ventnor Botanic Garden. We’re lucky to have so many great places to go as a family on the Island.”

Portsmouth

Views of Portsmouth from above and the Island beyond.

Though the summertime crowds may have quelled slightly, there’s still loads to see and do in Portsmouth during the autumn and winter period... The newly-launched Portsmouth Pass is a great way to explore some of the city highlights, with one ticket granting entry to four of the city’s top attractions. You can visit Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, The Mary Rose, Emirates Spinnaker Tower and The D-Day Story. Buy your pass online at any of the four attractions’ websites and enjoy a 20% discount on the standard walk-up rate.

In fact, one of the city’s highest-profile events takes place in October – the Great South Run. Thousands of athletes from across the country descend on Portsmouth to test themselves against the 10-mile course. For many it’s a chance to set a new personal best, with the fast, flat and paved course (not to mention the great support and entertainment lining the whole stretch) lending itself perfectly to speedy times.

Make a weekend of it and book into a hotel or guest house – as there’s far more than you can squeeze into just one day. On top of the great attractions there are a whole host of top events to enjoy over the coming months.

The Great South Run returns in October.

Elsewhere, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will again host its Victorian Christmas Festival on 29 November to 1 December. Victorian characters will wander through tree-lined streets while stallholders sell a whole array of festive treats. What’s more, this year marks the 20th anniversary, so what better time to treat the whole family to a traditional festive getaway. Even if you can’t make the big events, don’t miss your chance to see Portsmouth in the beautiful autumn light. From strolls along the seafront to gentle walks around the cobbled streets of Old Portsmouth (where lovely little pubs are nestled right on the seafront), it’s a great time to enjoy a trip to the city.

Father Christmas on board HMS Warrior – Victorian Christmas Festival at Por tsmouth Historic Dockyard.

There’s a whole host of events and activities to enjoy this autumn and winter, so keep an eye on visitportsmouth.co.uk and wightlink.co.uk/explorer for full details.

Lymington & the New Forest

Autumn in the New Forest promises a spectrum of seasonal colour.

Nothing beats autumn in the magical New Forest – not only is there thousands of acres for you to wander over, including 43 miles of coast and 140 miles of car-free approved cycle trails, but this time of year is packed with plenty of activities and events to enjoy. The annual Walking Festival takes place from 12 October until the end of half term with lots of walking events including an Autumn Wild Play Day on 30 October. Celebrate harvest by seeing how cider making was done in days gone by at Burley’s Annual Steam Apple Pressing Weekend on 12-13 October. It’s then that spooky and sparkly time of year with Hallowe’en and fireworks! Take the kids to Paultons Park for Happy Hallowe’en. From 5 October to 4 November the UK’s top-rated theme park will be bursting with 4,000 pumpkins, ghostly scenes, spooky meets-and-greets plus some fabulous thrill rides. Or experience Hallowe’en in the mysterious village of Burley on 26 October with lots of themed competitions!

Looking out across Hurst Spit to The Needles from Lymington.

For a fantastic firework spectacular why not visit the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu for its amazing display on 26 October? The New Forest Food & Drink Fortnight runs from 3-16 November and will tempt all foodies to visit and sample some fantastic local produce, with dozens of food and drink events showcasing the region’s remarkable producers and restaurants. During autumn, don’t be surprised if you see pigs enjoying a seasonal feast in the forest. ‘Pannage’ is the tradition of releasing pigs from local smallholdings that dates back to the time of William the Conqueror. The pigs love to eat fallen acorns and other nuts, many of which are poisonous to both cattle and New Forest ponies. Don’t forget, too, all the sumptuous Christmas lunches and beautiful Christmas events taking place in the run-up to 25 December.

For more information on visiting Lymington and the New Forest, take a look at thenewforest.co.uk and wightlink.co.uk/explorer ‘Pannage’ is the old New Forest tradition of releasing pigs from local smallholdings.
