From the President - Craig Carncross The National Holstein Convention was a great event. I heard that sentiment over and over again as the week went off without any major issues and a great crowd of Holstein breeders and enthusiasts filled the Red Lion and new convention center in Appleton. I hope everyone that made the time to get to the convention and take in some of the programming and activities enjoyed themselves. I also hope that all of the tremendous volunteers felt it was time well spent and got a real sense of accomplishment from their efforts. The week was a great peek into what Wisconsin breeders have to offer the rest of the U.S. and beyond. Hats off to the farm tour hosts. I made it to nearly every stop and was blown away by your presentations and hospitality. Sometimes it is the little unplanned things that really make a difference. For example, some members of the genetic conference speaker lineup attended the NHC sale and others were at the awards banquet. Those people got to share their expertise with breeders and members, but then got to see how the sales world values the numbers and animals bred from their research and formulas. The awards banquet is a real glimpse into the lives of the families that pour their heart and soul into creating these great breeding establishments. The awards are set up to recognize the long list of accolades for specific animals, but one quickly forgets about the cattle and the success these people have had in the industry and you realize how dairying is a lifestyle and a passion that plays out in similar fashion in all corners of the globe.

Good planning and hard work really paid off for the Wisconsin Holstein Association. Thank you to the vision and foresight from the NHC Executive Committee. Thank you to the staff and volunteers for helping execute their vision. I was in the fortunate position to hear numerous compliments on behalf of WHA from convention goers. They enjoyed the conversation, the cattle and the camaraderie. Well done! The NHC sale was able to put a little spark into an otherwise flat market. Both parts of the sale found strong support of buyers as sellers really had offered their best and it showed. I do not think I am speaking out of turn when I say the sale exceeded many of the expectations and really overcame a lot of uncertainty. Well done! Congrats to the newly elected President of Holstein USA, Corey Geiger. Corey and Krista did a great job as co-chairs of the convention and now Corey has the big task of leading our national organization. Good luck to Corey. Even with a major event like National Convention, the normal programming of WHA has gone quite smoothly this summer. I hope everyone has been able to get out and enjoy the summer, from District shows to State Show to State Fair and Futurity. There is still more to come. I urge you all too clear your calendars for September 14 and make the trek to one of Wisconsin’s finest herds for the State Picnic at Crisdhome Farms. Hope to see everyone in New Richmond.

Breeder Profile

District 6: Weis-Way Dairy by Kenni Bores, WHA Summer Intern Among the last 18 dairy farms in Kenosha County is Weis-Way Dairy, owned and operated by Dan and Marie Weis and their son Brett in Union Grove. Dan is the third generation on the farm after he and Marie purchased it from his parents in 1994. Growing up with Registered Holsteins, Dan’s life goal since he was 10 years old was always to own a nice dairy farm and breed the best herd of cows he could, a goal he is striving toward every day. The Farm Their 50 cows, 44 of which are homebred, are housed in a sand-bedded freestall and milked in a double-six swing parlor. The stalls are 52 inches wide, ensuring enough room for the larger cows. The Weis family had a compost bedding pack until four years ago when they decided that the pack barn wasn’t fitting their needs. In the freestall barn they recently added a sprinkler system to help keep the cows cool, a decision they have been thankful for this summer. The most recent improvement in the barn was the change from a six-foot long footbath to a 10foot long footbath, with they intention that the extra time in the solution will help better prevent hoof health problems. Cows are fed a ration consisting of triticale, which is a rye and wheat cross, corn silage, cotton seed, brewer’s grain, ground corn, liquid protein, and baleage. The triticale and corn silage are grown on the farm’s 73 acres, the rest being purchased feed products. This ration contributes to the farms rolling herd average of 26,305 pounds of milk, 1,016 pounds of fat, and 777 pounds of protein. All calves and youngstock are raised on the farm. Calves start out in hutches where they are fed whole milk until they are weaned at about two and a half months old. They are then transitioned to group housing, being moved through pens in the heifer barn until they are bred and confirmed pregnant. Once the heifers are confirmed pregnant, they are moved to the dry cow pen in the milking barn.

Savage-Leigh Sanchez Lea-ET EX-92 8 – August/September 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News

Weis-Way Atwood Mistletoe EX-94

The Cows Dan makes all the mating decisions for the cows while Brett mixes feed and does a lot of the repair work, and Marie does book work for the farm. While making breeding decisions, Dan says he “looks at the cow statue of his ideal cow that sits in the office window, because that is the cow that he is trying to breed.” His philosophy is to “breed sharp on round and round on sharp.” In addition to this, Dan is trying to avoid legs becoming too straight. This breeding philosophy helped them achieve a successful recent classification which concluded in 15 Excellent, 30 Very Good, and just two Good Plus cows, these scores contribute to their BAA of 111.0, making them one of the top 200 herds in the nation for the past seven years, and helped place them on Holstein Association USA’s Progressive Breeder Registry for the first time. Current sires being used at the farm include Awesome-Red, Diamondback, Crushable, Blake, and Crush. Overall, they are using more sexed semen to get more heifers. One of Dan’s favorite families to work with traces back to a purchased cow, J&S Outside Mindy, whose final score was VG-85. Mindy transmitted well and had an EX-92 Goldwyn daughter, as well as a homebred EX-94 cow, Weis-Way Atwood Mistletoe. Mistletoe is what the Weis family considers their greatest accomplishment. She is their highest scoring cow, was a class winner at the District 6 Holstein Show in 2014 followed by a seventh-place finish at the Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show, as well as having five natural daughters and three ET daughters currently on the farm. Two of her daughters recently scored 88 points as two-year-olds. At almost eight years old, Mistletoe is still in the milking herd and continues to be shown. She also is part of the five generations of the Mindy family that currently live on the farm.

Another cow family that Dan enjoys working with is SavageLeigh Sanchez Lea-ET. Lea was purchased seven years ago as a VG-88 two-year-old and is currently scored at EX-92. Lea has given the Weis family four daughters, one scored EX-92, one scored VG-88, and the last two are still heifers. They plan to flush her again, although do not have any bulls picked out to use. The Weis family enjoys showing at the District 6 show, Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show, and at World Dairy Expo if an animal is looking exceptional. In addition to this they let local youth take a heifer or two to the Wisconsin State Fair and they are excited for their grandchildren to show their first calves in the open show at the Kenosha County Fair this year. They have sold a few animals privately and on sales including consigning one to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcon Premier Sale last spring and most recently the University of

Mikayla’s

Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneer Dairy Classic. They look forward to hopefully selling more animals in the future. The People

In addition to farming, Brett owns a business repairing motorcycles, four-wheelers, and ATVs, Marie is an avid Packers fan, and Dan’s main hobby is the cows. They are also involved in the Kenosha County Dairy Promotions committees, Wisconsin Liquid Waste Carriers, where Dan served on the board for nine years, and in their local church. As far as the future of the herd, Dan, Marie, and Brett look forward to continuing to breed excellent cows that can be productive and marketable. They are also looking forward to showing more as their grandkids get older.

Moments

Hello again, I hope you all have been enjoying the busy summer as much as I have! The summer started off in June, having the opportunity to travel more than 1,000 miles attending district shows, while never getting lost! This experience was such a great adventure, being able to see so many excited junior members participate in the showmanship contests, along with being very competitive within all the district shows. The past couple months have also been filled with several futurities throughout the state, being able to attend these high-class events has been nothing but amazing. Seeing the breeders youngstock grow to tremendous cows and seeing the exhibitor’s sense of accomplishment is what makes these experiences so memorable for me. The highlight futurity for me was the Wisconsin Holstein All-Breeds Futurity at State Fair, having many of our members compete for the title was pretty

remarkable. They presented their cows with such grace and honor, it truly was a great representation of what our organization and members stand for. As we got down to the final three cows in the futurity the tension and excitement rose, knowing how much it means to these exhibitors to win this title. As Floydholm Mc Emoji-ET was named the winner all the tension was replaced with excitement and joy. It was such a heartwarming occasion to be able to experience with so many supporters. While attending the Wisconsin State Fair I got to see countless new and old faces, especially in the junior show. Watching the anticipation on the exhibitors faces while being named a champion was the most rewarding part. Being able to connect with so many members, new and old, this summer, helped me continue to strive towards my goal of meeting and becoming friends with at least one new member at each event. I cannot wait to see many of your faces as we move into the fall! Talk again soon, Mikayla Endres August/September 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 9

Crisdhome Farms opens their barn doors for the 2019 WHA State Picnic by Kenni Bores, WHA Summer Intern A Packer and American Flag waving in the wind above a farm sign is what greets you when you visit Crisdhome Farm in New Richmond. The century farm, which was originally purchased in 1912, is operated by Jake and Jade Kruschke, Jake’s brother Pete, father Chuck, uncle Dave, and one full-time employee, Tyler Moore. The family milks 100 cows and has about 125 youngstock, all of which are raised on the same farm. In 2013 the family built a mono-sloped bedded pack and in 2016 they built a heifer and dry cow barn which enabled them to bring all the animals to one place. Prior to this, they were on two different farms. Crisdhome Farm is known for high quality cattle, which Jake says is a goal of the farm, “We want to continue to breed high scoring, high production cows that can remain profitable in the future.” The 100-cow herd is home to 52 Excellent and 44 Very Good cows after a recent June classification. As you walk into the barn, the first cow across the barn walk is Crisdhome Gchip Troubadour EX-94, a barn favorite. This fourth-calf 5-year-old recently the first place in her class at the District 1 Holstein Show. The farm’s current group of two-year-olds is one of the most consistent groups they have had, although a standout is Crisdhome Hypnotic Bankston, one of Jade’s favorite cows. “She’s not a huge cow, but when you walk into the barn at milking time you notice her,” Jade says. Bankston was the first place senior two-year-old and Reserve Intermediate Champion at the District 1 Show. She is eighth generation homebred Very Good or Excellent, with a VG-87 dam and after that is seven Excellent dams. “We breed for cows that are medium-sized with balance, width from front end through the rump, high, wide rear udders, and functional feet and legs,” Jake commented about their breeding philosophy. To achieve these goals, the current sires that they are using are Doorman, Solomon, Atwood, Gold Chip, Dempsey, Defiant, High Octane, Denver, Doc, and Tatoo. When the Kruschke family purchases animals they like to buy from one name cow families. Some families that they own descendants of are Africa, Treasure, Frosty, Dana Rae, Gold Mae, Dellia, Renita, Tequila, Audrey Posch, and BD Crissy. The Kruschke family is no stranger to the show ring. This year they exhibited both the Reserve Intermediate Champion and Senior Champion at the District 1 Holstein Show before they were named the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor for the third year in a row. Last year, they were named Premier Breeder at the Midwest Fall National. The cows are fed a PMR consisting of corn silage, haylage, baleage, and ground corn, and milk cows are then fed top dressed protein with an automatic feeder. One of our perennial show cows with 169 lbs milk for the tester in July! Petals does exactly what we need in our barn - milks with ease, breeds back and gets better each lactation. This family is as consistent as they come!

It was a June for the books! We kicked off a busy week with a limited classification, earning 3, 87-point 2-year-olds sired by Crush, High Octane and Link Up. Two Atwood daughters went EX-93 as four and five-year-olds, and both are dams of the VG-87 2-Yr-Olds. We were honored to capture the Breeder and Exhibitor banners at this year’s district show. We have a great group of young cows in the barn now - our best ever! Inquiries and visitors always welcome.

Premier Breeder and Exhibitor | District 8: Smith-Crest Holsteins, Watertown Travis and Holly Smith, and Leah, Hattie, Blake, Farm Info: 125 cows; RHA: 21,000 lbs 4.04%, 816 lbs fat, 3.12%, 630 lbs protein District Show Animals: 6 animals shows, 5 homebred Sires being used: Jacoby, Tatoo, Diamondback, Jordy, Awesome Breeding Philosophies: With the current economic climate we have continued to focus on breeding for type, using the best bulls that will allow us to overcome current milk prices. We have taken a very close look at saving money when it comes to nutrition. We are making certain any feed is offering maximum milk yield but also not overfeeding for milk that can not be sustainable. We enjoy working with other folks who breed for type and enjoy showing registered cows. We hope to pass that passion on to our kids, Leah, Hattie, and Blake. Comments on Animals: We had a nice day with six animals exhibited, with five being homebread. Our first place Junior 3-year-old was Ms Smith-Crest Sid Vitt. At 85 points she is a nice young cow. SmithCrest Defiant Irisa a 90-point Senior 3-year-old is from Rotesown Gibson Ideal EX-94 that has brought many EX cows to the Smith-Crest herd. Contributing to the Premier Exhibitor award was first place Aged Cow, Eastrivere Gold Shimmer at 9 years old and EX-94 2E, she shows what we look for in a dairy cow. Smith-Crest also had a junior-owned animal participate, first place Fall Calf Smith-Crest Dmndback Vixen-ET owned by Sam Pitterle and Trent Schlender. Vixen was named Junior Champion of the Junior and Open Show but also Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show. 2019 National Holstein Convention Appleton, Wis • June 24-27,2019 The 2019 National Holstein Convention, hosted by the Wisconsin Holstein Association, was held June 24-27, 2019 at the Red Lion Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis. This legendairy event featured something for everyone including tours of Wisconsin’s finest Registered Holstein farms, visits to area attractions, the National Genetics Conference, the National Convention Sale, YDLI Reunion and more. Wisconsin adult and junior members were recognized by Holstein USA for their accomplishments and work throughout their time with Registered Holsteins. A highlight of the week’s events was the Gala Banquet where David Bachmann Sr. was awarded the 2019 Elite Breeder Award. Bachmann operated the high-caliber Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls for 50 years. The farm was known for producing elite females and for developing the Audrey Posch family. The award recognizes a Holstein breeder who bred outstanding animals, making a notable contribution to the advancement of the Holstein breed in the United States. A more in-depth article on David Bachmann Sr. is available on page 36. Also recognized at the Gala Banquet were the 2019 Distinguished Junior Member Finalists. Wisconsin Junior Holstein members Allison Breunig, Sauk City, and Kalista Hodorff, Eden, were chosen as Finalists. Also recognized during the convention as DJM semi-finalists were Zach Tolzman, Dodgeville, and Courtney Moser, Westby. The Holstein USA annual meeting took place on June 2627 where Corey Geiger was elected President. Also recognized during the annual meeting were this year’s Herds of Excellence award winners and the 40-year members. Those recognized with Herds of Excellence awards are listed on page 39. Wisconsin juniors were active in contests throughout the week. In the junior division of the prepared public speaking contest, Abby Meyer took first place. Lauren Siemers and Matthew Gunst took first and second, respectively, in the intermediate division of the contest. Clarissa Ulness won first place honors in the intermediate division of the scientific division of the folding display contest. Wisconsin was well represented in Dairy Jeopardy with Courtney Glenna topping the intermediate division of the contest. The junior dairy bowl team from Manitowoc/Calumet Counties placed third. The team consisted of Clarissa and Garrett Ulness and Brianna and Austin Meyer. Also representing Wisconsin was the Shawano County senior dairy bowl team consisting of Mason Jauquet, Summer Henschel, Carmen Haack and Ben Schmidt. Wisconsin juniors placed fourth in the digital scrapbook and won the Mission Membership award. One state is awarded each year for increasing their membership. The honor is calculated on a percentage increase from January 1 to June 1 of the convention year.

The 2019 National Holstein Convention in Appleton was well attended by Holstein enthusiasts from around the United States and the world. The week consisted of farm tours, the National Genetics Conference, networking and the National Convention Sale.

More than 1,200 people registered for this year’s convention, coming from 38 states and 19 countries. Of these attendees, 350 were Holstein youth with many competing in association contests. An additional 400 people attended the National Convention Sale on June 26. The National Convention kicked off on June 24 with junior contests, pre-convention farm tours and alternate tours. Attendees saw a wide variety of dairying styles during the preconvention farm tours with visits to Jenlar Holsteins, Budjon Farms, Forest Ridge Holsteins and Rosendale Dairy. Area attractions were featured on a tour of the historic Hearthstone house and a guided cruise down the Fox River. The juniors finished out their busy contest day at Badger Sports Park, mingling with fellow juniors and enjoying games, mini golf, gokarts and batting cages. Host day was busy with more farm tours, area sights and the anticipated family night outing near Lambeau Field. Milksource Genetics, Synergy Dairy, Siemers Holsteins and Hilrose Dairy saw more than 500 Holstein enthusiasts tour their facilities. Those on the alternate tours enjoyed a day full of behind-thescenes action at the NEW Zoo or a tour of Brooks Farms then a fun float down the Wolf River. A tour was also taken at LaClare Family Creamery where attendees learned about the Henrich family’s goat operation. The day wrapped up with a tailgate-style meal near Lambeau Field and tours of the legendary Packers stadium. This year, a National Genetics Conference was held in conjunction with the convention. The two-day program ran on June 26 and 27, focusing on the past, present and future of dairy genetics and included a dynamic array of speakers and panel discussions. To correspond with that, a Junior Genetics Conference was continued on page 37

David Bachmann Sr. recognized with the Elite Breeder Award For David Bachmann Sr., dairy cattle breeding is a work of art. Holstein Association is honored to present David Bachmann Sr. of Pinehurst Farms, Sheboygan, the 2019 Elite Breeder Award. A reflection of Pinehurst Farms’ progressive spirit, this year’s Elite Breeder bred and developed a grand champion-caliber Registered Holstein herd for over 50 years. He’s unmatched in the showring, and relentless in his goal of breeding better cows that are judged both on how they look, and how they perform in and out of the showring. Pinehurst Farms is widely known as a world-class operation with some of the finest cattle ever bred. David has the uncanny eye to find a “diamond in the rough,” take her home and turn her into a class winner. In 1976, David’s show string was the first to be named Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at three national shows, repeated again in 1980. Pinehurst exhibited World Dairy Expo Grand Champions in four different breeds and two of them went on to be named Supreme Champion. Among David’s other accomplishments, Pinehurst Farms received more than 200 All-American nominees, over 50 AllAmerican and Reserve All-American awards, and was named Premier Breeder or Exhibitor at 20 national shows. In 1950, brothers David and Peter Bachmann purchased the farm from their grandfather, Peter Reiss. Over the years, David purchased additional land and added new buildings, bringing the

farm to 800 acres and 300 Registered Holsteins. David developed Pinehurst’s herd so that it combined longevity with high lifetime production and superior type. His talent for breeding tremendous, deep pedigrees with long strings of Excellent cows, all with outstanding production records, is the envy of breeders worldwide. Pinehurst Farms, a 2013 Herd of Excellence award winner, was home to many of the Holstein breed’s great brood cows. David is well-known for developing the Audrey Posch EX-93 GMD cow family. She has founded an uninterrupted 20-generation group of Excellent females. David enjoyed the bull side of the business, too. He excelled at identifying, proving and merchandising bulls. Pinehurst Peerless was his first All-American bull and the start of his export business. David’s commitment is not only apparent in Pinehurst Farms’ outstanding achievements, but also in his service on Holstein Association USA’s Board of Directors. During his tenure, from 1986 to 1994, David was a member of the finance committee, chaired that committee for two years, and served three years on the executive committee. As someone who is always willing to share his knowledge and experience, many young breeders have gained expertise from his guidance and support. The positive impact of David Bachmann’s influence of the Holstein breed has and will be felt for many years.

2018 Herds of Excellence LARGE HERDS (500+ herd size division) Siemers Holstein Farms Inc.

The Siemers Family, Newton 2595 cows • 97.5% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 85.3 Milk: 35,750 Fat: 1,389 Protein: 1,070 Three-Year Honoree

Established more than a century ago, Siemers Holsteins, Newton, is a team operation. Currently the family’s fourth, fifth and sixth generation are working alongside each other, contributing to the dairy. Since 1908, Registered Holsteins have been the cornerstone of the Siemers’ herd and key to their success, both in and out of the showring. This third-time Herd of Excellence has 2,595 milking cows. Aside from their main dairy, the family transformed a neighboring freestall barn to accommodate their elite genetic cattle. This allows them to provide more individualized care for their show cattle and other select animals. At Siemers Holsteins, marketing “genetics for cow people” is a big part of what they do. To achieve that goal, the Siemers breed for a wide spectrum of categories: high-index cattle, show cattle, outstanding registered commercial cows, and Red and White Holsteins. They may focus on different avenues when making breeding decisions, but Dan says their best cows are also their best production cows. The Siemers look for strength in the cow’s conformation, so their herd will give more milk for longer periods of time. Dan explains breeding for a balanced cow will create problemfree cattle that will pay dairymen dividends for years to come. The family looks for cows that have a solid sire stack, family production and marketable genomic numbers. Their mission is simple: to make every generation better than the last. The Siemers have bred more than 1,000 Very Good and Excellent cows; and have achieved 27 Progressive Genetic Herd honors. MEDIUM HERDS (100 to 499 herd size division) Hilrose Holsteins

Joseph A. Brantmeier, Sherwood 107 cows • 97.2% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 88.6 Milk: 33,420 Fat: 1,254 Protein: 1,001 Eight-Year Honoree

Joe Brantmeiers’s parents, Hilard and Rose Mary, established Hilrose Dairy, Sherwood. In 1956, the herd’s first Registered

Holstein calf was purchased. Since then, the Brantmeier family has concentrated on high type animals with high components and longevity. Their perfect cow would be high scoring with greater than four percent fat and three percent protein in addition to great legs, excellent udders, and a strong ability to transmit. Today, Hilrose Dairy is a partnership between Joe and his wife, Chris, alongside their sons, Andy and Jeff. There is one other full-time employee, Tim Bornemann, who manages the machinery and crops. Because opportunities to expand are limited, Jeff explains they must focus on niche markets to support three families. “Besides selling high-quality milk, we focus on the niche markets such as selling embryos, show calves or fresh two-yearolds throughout the year,” Jeff says. Jeffrey-Way Holsteins Jeffrey A. & Kate Hendrickson, Belleville 101 cows • 92.1% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 90.1 Milk: 33,695 Fat: 1,256 Protein: 1,061 Four-Year Honoree

For Jeff Hendrickson of Jeffrey-Way Holsteins, developing Registered Holsteins has been a lifelong commitment and passion. Seeing many positives working with the black and white beauties, he has spent more than 30 years expanding his herd. Growing up on his family’s dairy, Hendrickson transitioned into a herdsman role for Inwood Farm near Argyle. In 1986, he and his wife, Kate, started farming on their own and moved to their current location in 1991. Their son, Brooks, is also part of the operation. Jeffrey-Way currently milks 101 cows. The Hendricksons have bred 237 Excellent animals. It’s the attention to high type bulls that helps set their herd apart. Their perspective is to start with good genetics and stick with good genetics, he explains. They look for a cow with above average stature and place emphasis on TPI. He doesn’t focus on production traits, as he believes having quality feed will help the cows milk. He wants to see the herd’s offspring score Excellent as mature cows. Jeff notes that Registered Holsteins offer added value with the opportunity to sell extra cows, bulls and market embryos. Jeff made a groundbreaking decision when he purchased Inwood Taffy Apollo – the start of Hendrickson’s “T” family. Taffy made herself quite a respected brood cow, Hendrickson explains. Today, more than 90 percent of their herd traces back to her. Most notably from Taffy’s family is Tina. Jeffrey-Way Mascot Tina-ET EX-91 3E GMD DOM had 22 sons sold into AI, with more than 100 embryos sold. August/September 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 39

Koepke Farms Inc. The Koepke Family Oconomowoc 312 cows • 100% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 84.4 Milk: 34,719 Fat: 1,430 Protein: 1,042 Two-Year Honoree

Koepke Farms Inc. is a family operation where a love for Registered Holsteins and agriculture runs deep since it’s establishment in 1875. Today, the 100 percent homebred herd and farm is a partnership between brothers Alan, Dave, James and James’ son, John. Their herd of 312 cows is milked three times a day in a double-10 herringbone parlor. The family team relies on Holstein Association USA’s programs and services to improve their herd’s genetics and increase milk production. And through their history, they’ve achieved these goals. The ideal cow is one that you don’t know she’s there, Dave says. She’s invisible until something bad happens, but she’s paying her way. The number one priority for Dave is cheese-merit dollars (CM$). Ten percent of their milk is bottled, while the rest is used for cheese or other dairy products. He then shifts his attention to health traits — low somatic cell, daughter pregnancy rate, and calving stillbirth percentage. Dave says the key to the farm’s longevity is having new generations interested in carrying on the dairy tradition. The Koepke family has been farming since emigrating more than 140 years ago. In the 1950s, Waukesha County in Wisconsin was known as “Cow County USA” because there were more cows than people, Dave says. Since that time, their surrounding area has become much more metropolitan. Skirting the edge of Milwaukee, urban growth has been increasing. For Dave, it’s all about telling their story. He knows that even though their dairy won’t grow in size, it is important that urban consumers connect with where their food comes from. Maurer Farm Charles M. Maurer, Chilton 100 cows • 94.5% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 84.1 Milk: 32,734 Fat: 1,251 Protein: 998 First-year Honoree

For Charles (Chuck) Maurer, Maurer Farm, it’s the people and the quality of Registered Holsteins that mean the most to their operation. Established 160 years ago, the herd transitioned to Registered Holsteins in the 1970s by Chuck’s parents, a decision he remains grateful for today. In 1992, Chuck and his wife, Gloria, purchased the farm from his parents and continued the family legacy into the next 40 – August/September 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News

generation. At Maurer Farm, cow comfort is the number-one focus. The milking stalls and mattresses have been replaced to support larger-framed cows. Building a new dry cow and heifer barn allowed them to improve ventilation and labor efficiency. Chuck utilizes aAa animal analysis to breed a more balanced cow and increase longevity. He selects bulls from proven cow families and would like cows to produce 100,000 pounds of milk within their first three lactations. He says the perfect cow is one with a big frame, high and wide rear udder and that is pleasing to the eye. Advancing genetics, feed, health traits and technology helps support those goals, Chuck says. Registered Holsteins are improving at a fast rate; a reflection of the people involved in the business, he says. Maurer Farm is rooted in family. Their children, Angela, C.W., Emily and Grant help in many aspects of the dairy. They also have six grandchildren who bring even more love and excitement to the farm. “Fulfilling a lifelong dream to be on the farm, I am grateful to have raised a family on a farm,” Chuck says. “I enjoyed watching my children develop work ethic and responsibility and seeing the excitement of the youngest generation.” Paradise-D Holsteins Daniel J. and Nancy Pagenkopf, Lancaster 133 cows • 96.4% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 85.0 Milk: 32,694 Fat: 1,359 Protein: 1,003 Two-Year Honoree

Dan and Nancy Pagenkopf married in 1985 and purchased half of Paradise-D Holsteins from Dan’s parents. In 2016, their oldest son, Craig, and his wife, Ela, bought into the family business. Dan and Nancy’s other children, Scott and Andrea, own cattle and assist with farm activities, as well. A brood cow that left a mark on their herd is Plackes-SVF Luke Gail-ET EX-92 4E. She made sound cows that transmitted longevity, strong genetics and high type, an essence of their breeding strategy. Starting with quality genetics and a key focus on management practices, Paradise-D Holsteins ensures when a calf hits the ground it gets a healthy start. This includes proper nutrition and excellent housing. Along with marketing high quality milk, Paradise-D Holsteins have also sold Registered Holstein bulls and embryos, both in the United States and internationally, since 1995. “We strive to make a cow with high milk components and strong health traits, while not sacrificing anything,” Dan says. “The health of our herd and the cow’s longevity are at the forefront of every mating. We believe the health of our herd is tied to the longevity of the farm.” Their main breeding goal, Dan explains, is to continue to breed and develop strong cow families with profitable genetics including production, type and longevity that interest both the local dairyman in addition to dairymen around the world.

SMALL HERDS (10 to 99 herd size division) B-Long Holsteins Bruce, Brenda & Bret Long, New London 46 cows • 100% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification S core - 88.1 Milk: 35,341 Fat: 1,332 Protein: 1,092 Eight-Year Honoree

For Bruce, Brenda and Bret Long at B-Long Holsteins, building on cow family pedigrees is not only a passion, but also a strategy for constant improvement with each generation. Bruce and Brenda have been dairying for more than 25 years. Their son, Bret, joined the operation after graduating from the Farm and Industry Short Course at UW-Madison. The Longs have been effective at achieving both type and production. When they first started, their rolling herd average (RHA) was 18,000 pounds of milk and they had a BAA of 102. They focus on cows with longevity, high-volume production and the ability to transmit those qualities to their offspring. The Longs’ ultimate goal is to breed large, powerful cows with big frames, plenty of strength and width, and good components. This 100 percent homebred herd’s secret to their accomplishments lies in what Bruce calls “the 3 C’s” — cows, crops and comfort. When B-Long Holsteins makes changes on the farm, Bruce says, “It is almost always in the name of better cow comfort. That leads to greater feed consumption and overall herd health.” They believe year-round access to pastures helps with the herd’s soundness and longevity. Many of the herd’s foundation animals originated from Bruce’s childhood herd. Their current herd can be traced back to two calves Bruce purchased when he was 14 years old – Belleview L-H Mars Happy VG-82 GMD and Belleview Barrett Ibis VG-82. Bruce and Brenda have passed their drive for breeding black-andwhite beauties to Bret, who plays an important role at the dairy. Ever-Green-View Holsteins, LLC Thomas J. Kestell, Waldo 70 cows • 93.8% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 89.1 Milk: 40,015 Fat: 1,592 Protein: 1,219 Nine-Year Honoree

Acknowledged internationally for their superior Registered Holstein genetics, this nine-year Herd of Excellence honoree has dedicated more than 45 years to breeding excellent dairy cattle. Tom and Gin Kestell are in partnership with their youngest son, Chris, and his wife, Jennifer. Together, they manage one of the world’s highest producing herds. In 2018, Tom and Gin were honored as Holstein Association’s Elite Breeder. The Ever-Green-View Farm motto is “Where Dreams Come

True.” The Kestells started farming with little more than a dream. Like many in the business, cash flow was tight during those early years. Tom says he did not invest deeply in genetics. “If I could do my life over, I would buy Holsteins that had more genetic potential much sooner,” he explains. Since their farm’s inception, Tom and Gin have exported more than 8,900 embryos to countries including Russia, China, Germany, Brazil, Japan, India and the Netherlands. Many of their cows have been recognized with state and national records for milk, fat, and protein. Ever-Green-View Farms is home to the first dam and daughter duo to receive national milk production record status — Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET EX-92 2E GMD and Ever-Green-View My Gold-ET EX-93. The herd not only maintains high production, but also exceptional classification scores. Their BAA of 111.7 is the fifth highest in the country for herds of their size. That includes 64 Excellent and 55 Very Good cows. They have achieved 27 Progressive Genetic Herd honors and were presented the Progressive Breeders Registry award for 17 years. Staying in tune with the world market and using genomic young sires allows them to be successful internationally. Hill-Ton Holsteins John & Evelyn Hamilton, Cuba City 68 cows • 96.9% Homebred Average Age-Adjusted Classification Score - 86.9 Milk: 35,181 Fat: 1,322 Protein: 1,082 Two-Year Honoree

Live to dream, work to succeed. That’s the motto of HillTon Holsteins in Wisconsin. John Hamilton says he has always been a big dreamer, and his family finds value in the endless possibilities available when raising Registered Holsteins. “Just a passion for the Holstein cow and developing pedigrees. Seeing when calves are born and having them develop into a beautiful cow are things we enjoy,” says Evie, John’s wife. For the Hamiltons, one of the most important aspects of Registered Holsteins is the database where they can pull up information on an animal and trace the pedigree. When making breeding decisions, John pays close attention to all the fine details. They use classification data and the linear breakdown of the cows to make sire selections. Low somatic cell count is a priority, John says, while choosing for type first and production second. They also look at keeping the components on the plus side when picking for the next generation. This commitment to detail has brought them much success. Hill-Ton Holsteins have received the Progressive Breeders’ Registry award for 25 consecutive years. Now John and Evie are pleased to work alongside their son, Charlie. He returned back to the family farm in May 2018, after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. With his parents’ example to guide him, Hill-Ton Holsteins will continue into the next generation. “The dairy economy right now is not the greatest to be looking to advance, but we can’t always pick the situations,” John says. “The Registered Holstein is going to be a big plus on this place.” August/September 2019 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 41

A note from your JACs

Hello fellow junior members! I hope you all enjoyed your summer and are looking forward to the fall. Congratulations to all those who participated in the Wisconsin State Holstein Show, Judging Contest, and Showmanship Contest in Madison. We had a great turnout this year with exceptional quality. At the beginning of August, the JACs held a Block Party at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair in place of the Taste of State Fair. The 1st Annual Junior Holstein Block Party consisted of music, prizes, and a very large, but competitive corn hole tournament. There was a great amount of involvement from many junior exhibitors. Before school starts is a good time to look at all of the award forms we have available to you. Award forms due in the office on September 19 include: 12 & Under, YDJM, DJM, and Royalty applications. Due on November 15 is the WHY Friend award, Junior Farm Trip, Long Range Production, and Junior Progressive Breeder awards. I highly encourage all junior members to consider filling out at least one of these applications; what you put in is what you’ll get out. Winners of each of these awards will be recognized at the Junior Holstein Convention held in early January. In addition, raffle tickets are available to purchase to be drawn at the Junior Holstein Convention with the grand prize being a calf from the Weigel family! Good luck to all on filling out applications! Hannah Nelson, hannah.r.nelson@my.uwrf.edu

Cow Camp 2019 - Mooovin’ and Groovin’

Nearly 30 campers enjoyed a weekend at Upham Woods in the Wisconsin Dells. Campers had the chance to meet new friends, take part in traditional camping activities and learn about the Registered Holstein cow, the dairy industry and more. Thank you to our guest speakers and volunteers for making this another successful event. Team Building:

We learned to communicate. We also learned how to work together to solve a problem. We learned that it is also important to have fun, so we don’t get frustrated.

Speaking with WHA Princess, Lauren Siemers and WHA Princess student profile monthly ad_student profile - 1/4 pg #5279C 8/14/19 9:59 AM Page 1Attendant Mikayla Endres:

We wrote speeches with the Wisconsin Holstein Princess, Lauren, and Wisconsin Holstein Princess Attendant, Mikayla. Each group wrote speeches about calf care or dairy products. We learned to communicate and use good word choice to get our points across. We also learned many other great ways to write and give a speech. WISCONSIN MADISON

Dairy Science STUDENT PROFILE Name: Nicole Schoenberger Hometown: Kiel, WI School: Valders High School Class Size: 83 Farm: Greendale Dairy Major: Dairy Science Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I decided to attend UW-Madison because of its reputation as a top university for Dairy Science and I wanted to become a part of something great. High on my list of priorities was a chance to learn from professors who are well known as experts in their fields. Because of all the opportunities we have here, UW-Madison has given me the chance to appreciate what is so wonderful about the dairy and agricultural industries. What has been your most memorable college experience? It’s hard to pick just one that has been most memorable. Being a member of both Association of Women in Agriculture and Badger Dairy Club has provided me with many great experiences. I truly enjoyed being a teacher assistant to my favorite class. Through all of these experiences I have made many great friendships and the time that I have spent at UW Madison is something that I will never forget. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Herd Management taught by Ted Halbach. This class gave us very practical and useful dairy management techniques to use in later classes such as the Dairy Nutrition Experience sponsored by Purina and Dairy Challenge. The class allowed us to apply everything we learned in practical situations and help challenge ourselves to become better students and dairy industry leaders. What are your future career goals? After I finish my undergraduate degree in December, I am looking to go to UW-River Falls for a master’s degree in Agricultural Education. Professors like Ted Halbach, Dr. Dave Combs and other dairy industry leaders have become great influences for me in my education. I hope to one day become a positive influence for others and to continue to contribute to the agricultural industry that I love.

Crafts with JAC, Hannah Ullom:

On Sunday we had the opportunity to use our creative juices to decorate CD suncatchers with JAC, Hannah. We liked that the projects were unique. They also made great Mother’s Day gifts. Dairy vs. other products with Kristen Broege:

On Saturday we did milk sampling with Kristen Broege. First, we talked about the nutritional differences between products. Did you know it takes 24 glasses of almond juice to equal the protein in three glasses of cow’s milk? We had the chance to blind taste test a variety of milks and milk alternatives. These included coconut milk, almond juice, Fairlife and our favorite, traditional 2% cow’s milk! We had so much fun! Advertising with Kayla Wright:

Advertising was fun because we got to make our own ads. Kayla Wright showed some awesome examples of good ads and explained what components make an excellent ad. We enjoyed the freedom of getting to make the headlines we wanted with pictures we liked. Showmanship by Jerome and Chrissy Meyer:

During the showmanship session Jerome and Chrissy Meyer showed us the correct way to prepare for showmanship and how to execute these practices in the ring. The skills ranged from learning to pick the right fitting halter to knowing how to set up your heifer in line. We all enjoyed the things we learned. Dairy judging by Scott Nelson:

We learned about the parts of the cow from Scott Nelson. We also looked at the PDCA scorecard and learned about the breakdowns. In addition, we learned about why it’s important to know the parts of the cow for our judging careers. Halter tying with JACs Mason Jauquet and Josh Gerbitz:

Mason and Josh taught about how to tie a slip knot for tying cattle. It is supposed to be easier and stronger than a regular knot. It is also supposed to be easy to undo in case your heifer decides not to cooperate. There are many different variations of slip knots that be used for your own preference. This was great practice! The Star Camper Award was given to Ellie Larson of Rock County.
