From the President - Steve Endres

Hi Everyone, I have to start with our Wisconsin Championship Show. My gosh, what quality with great quantity! From spring calves all the way through the older cow classes, every class was deep with amazing individuals right down the line! I enjoyed seeing a few of my favorites from the district shows end up being All-Wisconsin. Hats off to all exhibitors! I received thanks from so many and I want to extend those thanks to everyone who helped with all facets of the show.

It seems to me summer has just flown by. Maybe one reason for that is we had a very decent August with very few hot and humid days. I am glad to miss out on those dog days of summer! But fall is here and with that comes World Dairy Expo. We can expect multiple farm tours and many visitors this go around. People from all over are going to want to make up for two years of lost time!

Once Expo is in the rearview mirror we turn our focus to the junior members. Even before you read this message DJM, YDJM and 12 &

under award applications were due in the office and dairy bowl practices are in full swing. The remaining award applications are due in November such as the royalty application, junior farm trip and more. Always check www.wisholsteins.com for important junior information and dates.

Selections are ongoing for our State Sale scheduled for December 1 at the Cow Palace in Kaukauna. If you have not been visited or contacted and have a potential consignment, you can contact the office and the staff will get the message to Craig.

Harvest is now in full swing. The hope here is for you to have a bountiful one and especially a safe one!

Take care, Steve

6 – Wisconsin Holstein News – October 2022

Hello, Holstein Enthusiasts!

From spending time in West Allis at the Wisconsin State Fair, to attending a few futurities, the last two months were very memorable! Every event I attended was an enjoyable experience for me with different special and unique aspects that I will always remember. I had a great time at the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy Show! One thing I learned was that we host the largest junior dairy show in the country. It was amazing to see so many spectators supporting our hardworking youth. The following weekend, I went to the Wisconsin State Fair Open Dairy Show. I had a chance to explore Dairy Lane, where I performed a milking demonstration! It was really exciting to see so many families learning about the dairy industry. I found out that for many in the crowd, it was their first time watching a cow get milked. I

also spent time with the calves in Dairy Lane answering questions from curious fairgoers. It was very neat to see the different perspectives that people have of agriculture and introduce them to Wisconsin’s dairy industry! To conclude my time at the Wisconsin State Fair, I attended the Wisconsin Holstein Association All-Breeds Futurity. This year was the 36th anniversary of the Futurity. I am honored to have represented WHA at such an elite event!

At the end of August, I attended Dodge County’s Holstein Futurity. Exhibitors wore 1920s-themed apparel to celebrate their 20th Futurity show. I loved seeing the different outfits and judging the Best Dressed competition! During Labor Day weekend, I attended the Shawano County Futurity and the Sheboygan County Holstein Futurity. The theme for the Shawano County Futurity was “Legends of the Fall.” Exhibitors dressed as their favorite legendary person. Dolly Parton was a crowd favorite! While I was at the Sheboygan County Holstein Futurity, I also assisted the Dairy Education Center with their annual Cheese Reception. There were many delicious cheeses! There were 26 quality animals exhibited in the Futurity. It was a very impressive show!

I look forward to seeing everyone at my next event, World Dairy Expo! I am very excited to be on the colored shavings representing WHA.

Have you HERD?

District 6 holds 19th annual Holstein Futurity

The 19th annual District 6 Holstein Futurity was held in conjunction with their district show on June 24 in Stoughton. Thirty-four calves were entered in the contest three years ago, and three cows competed on show day.

Breeder Profile

District 5 Breeder Profiles

Riedel-Ridge Holsteins - Taylor and Miranda Riedel

Taylor and Miranda Riedel were both farm kids. Taylor grew up helping at his grandpa’s Registered Holstein dairy and Miranda grew up on a Registered Jersey dairy. The couple met at UW-Platteville where they both graduated with degrees in Dairy Science. While in school they were active in dairy club and both worked to run the 2016 Pioneer Dairy Classic sale. This is the time where they also made their first Registered Holstein purchase together, Tree-Hayven Awesome Mae, who is currently scored EX-93 with an EX-95 mammary system.

Today, Taylor and Miranda own 11 cows and 10 heifers. Heifers are housed in a bedded pack barn on their property in Pardeeville while cows are housed at Shawn and Jenny Jerome’s 300-cow dairy and some show cows are housed at Rosedale Genetics.

Showing is a big part of the Riedel’s Registered Holstein business. Taylor grew up showing in District 5 and the pair continues to exhibit there today in addition to the Wisconsin Championship Show and World Dairy Expo.

One of these show animals that is a favorite for the couple is Ms Diamondb Dory-Red-ET EX-91. Dory has topped her class numerous times at the District 5 Holstein Show, and was All-Wisconsin Red & White Senior 2-Year-Old.

A cow that has been influential on the herd is Tree-Hayven Shtle

Misty *RC GP-84, who Taylor purchased when he was in high school. She calved in each year with a heifer calf and produced Taylor’s first AllAmerican nomination, Sorg-Land Redneck Party-Red VG-87, who was third and best bred and owned at World Dairy Expo as a fall yearling in 2017. Misty’s daughter by Adonis, Sorg-Land Adorable-Red, scored EX91 on her second calf and was the couple’s first bred and owned animal to go Excellent. Today, half of the animals in their herd trace back to Misty.

Taylor and Miranda are also proud of Riedel-Ridge Dback Amor-Red VG-87-2Y. “Amor is the first of, hopefully, a lot of 2-year-olds to score VG with the Riedel-Ridge prefix,” Taylor says. She is a daughter of AdorableRed EX-91. Amor was 13th in the Summer Junior 2-Year-Old class at World Dairy Expo last year just 30 days fresh.

Weigland Tstorm Alexamya-ET is an exciting heifer currently residing at Riedel-Ridge. She is a daughter of Budjon-Abbott Alexandra-ET EX-92, Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show and All-American Winter Yearling in 2018.

“We breed mainly for type, however we like to keep balance in production,” Taylor notes. “We like cows that look good and last.” Some of their favorite bulls currently in rotation are Tango-Red, Styleleader, Showtime, and Warchant.

Both Taylor and Miranda work in the industry. Taylor works as an AI technician for CentralStar Cooperative covering the Dane County area and Miranda works in sales at Emmi Roth.

In the future, the Riedels would like to expand their herd a little and create a way to care for their show cows on their farm, in addition to enhancing the marketability of the herd to a higher level.

Taylor says, “While we didn’t really start focusing on Registered Holsteins and our own herd until after we graduated college, we have made great strides and continue to build. Cows have taken us great places and we have met even greater people, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store.”

Kemridge Farm

Abby Swan always wanted to be a dairy farmer and dreamed of taking over her family’s farm, Kemridge Farm 2 in Westfield. Before this dream came true, she worked as an ER nurse for 18 years while helping on the farm on her days off. Eight years ago she left nursing and took over the day to day cow management of the farm.

Kemridge Farms has 350 milking cows with another 400 to 450 head of youngstock. Abby’s father, Norman Kemnitz, named the farm as a split between his last name and the ridge of trees that stand across from the main dairy barn. Abby, in addition to her family, all have a role on the dairy. Her mother, Debbie handles the books; Aric, her brother, manages crops, machinery and feeding; his son Kypton works on the farm too helping with field work. Abby’s children Troy and Holly work with her, milking cows and feeding calves. Over the last year, Holly has taken an interest in showing cattle and is looking forward to joining Wisconsin Junior Holstein next year to show her own animals.

Ten years ago, the family expanded the milking herd. They now have a 300-cow freestall barn and a converted shed that includes freestalls and maternity pens. Cows are milked in a double-10 parlor that was built at the time of expansion. They also crop 1300 acres of land, growing corn and alfalfa.

“The best program I started has been our reproduction program,” Abby says. “We have increased conception so much. I carefully plan out how many pregnancies per month to sexed semen and Angus semen to keep our heifer numbers at a more manageable level.”

Abby always wanted to have show cattle growing up. Her goal in taking over the dairy herd was to improve the genetics to have nice looking cattle that can also perform in the parlor. Abby and Holly boarded a heifer calf last year at Heatherstone Enterprises so she could enter a show program. Both have learned a lot from Mike Holschbach on how to raise and manage show animals. 2021 was their first year attending the District 5 Holstein Show and Championship Show in August. They look forward to continuing to exhibit at these shows in the future.

In the pursuit of developing a herd with improved type, the family purchased two heifers that now have freshened and added beautiful offspring to the herd. Ms How-El-Acres Lead Kendra is an EX-90 M-Leader that was purchased from Mark and Nicky Rueth’s sale. She is the dam of Kemridge Kendras Deva VG-85 that is housed at Heatherstone and has a June Diamondback heifer calf. Kendra has three daughters, four granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter. She is pregnant with her fourth heifer calf due in October. The second cow that has helped improve genetics is Heatherstone Hot Topic VG-85-2Y. She is the dam of Abby’s favorite show heifer from this year, Kemridge Hot Mess. Hot Topic was fresh in June with an Altitude heifer calf.

“My breeding philosophy is to pick sires that are the ‘whole package’. They need to have good type, positive milk and components with good reproduction. I am a bull connoisseur!,” Abby says. “I study the sire lists monthly and pick bulls that will hopefully improve the herd.”

Abby picks matings on all cows and heifers and breeds all the animals. She keeps between 25 and 30 bulls in the tank that have the traits needed to improve genetics. Currently, a few of the bulls they are using are Farnear Architect, OCD Mystic Crush, Corrcroft Breakshot, Duckett Pfct Has It All, AOT Highclass, Golden Oaks War Chant, Eskdale Lustruous PP and Siemers Zas Patan.

Some of the herd favorites who are high scoring, high production cows are daughters of Farnear Delta-Lambda, Winstar Empire Maker, Stantons Chief, Lesperron Stronger, and Mr. Frazzled Aristocrat. These sires are continued to be used in the breeding program.

The future plans for the farm include continuing to improve genetics and milk cows they love. “My father loved nice looking cattle. He passed away before he could see the improvements that we have made to his herd of cows,” Abby says. “I like to believe that he would be impressed!”

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota, so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 9 of the 18 contests across the past 6 contests held at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI).

Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 22 of the 36 contests across the past 12 held at these 3 locations. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. In 2021, the University of Minnesota was 1st overall in both the Vernon County (Viroqua, WI) and the NAILE (Louisville, KY) collegiate contests.

If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

MISSOURI HOLSTEIN JUNIORS

Congratulations to Missouri Holstein Junior Members!

We had a very talented and determined group of youth attend National Holstein convention this year in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

This is the best showing a Missouri dairy bowl team has had in many years! All of the team members answered questions and they advanced through several rounds. The contest helped to show them the information that they need to study for next year and gave them the confidence to continue! Well done!

2022 Illinois State Holstein Picnic at R-Homestead

R-Homestead Holsteins began in 1955 with the purchase of an open heifer as a 4-H project for the eldest son of Orlo and Beulah Ruppert, David. Before this time, the dairy consisted of a herd of Milking Shorthorn cows. Beulah’s family had a herd of Holstein cows and she herself had shown Holsteins as a youth.

With this background and the encouragement of Beulah’s brother Earl “Hubcap” Moeller, their journey with the beloved Black and White cows began. From the beginning, developing a herd of mostly homebred cattle with a “balance of type and production” has been the goal for the farm and this motto has remained for three generations.

The farm last hosted the Illinois State Holstein Picnic in 1979. That year, the herd boasted a BAA of 104.4, through a dedicated breeding philosophy, this has increased to its current level of 109.7. Currently, they have 11 EX, 42 VG, 16 GP and 2 G for the entire classified herd. Their highest classified cow at this time is R-Homestead AS Charlotte-ET EX-94, with a 99 point rump, which is their highest ever. The rolling herd average in ‘79 was an impressive 18,000 lbs. milk with a 3.8% butterfat. Current rolling herd average is 22,000 lbs. milk with a 4.0% butterfat and 3.2% protein. The cows are not pushed hard for milk; longevity and components are the greater focus.

R-Homestead is truly a family affair as all labor is provided by family with no outside employees. Dave and Lenore have four children, all of whom were active showing and helping on the farm growing up, and still are active today. Tonya and her husband Lloyd Garrelts live four miles from the farm at Lenore’s childhood home and fill in whenever Marc and Lora may be away. Lance and his wife Amy, and their three kids, Shae, Paige and Chase live in Heyworth and have a small herd of Holsteins that are primarily housed at R-Homestead with a few show calves at their home. They use the prefix R-Way and have garnered several Illinois State Fair winners over the years, having the Junior Champion of the Junior Show in 2021. Jenè and her husband Nathan Clementz have five girls, Noelle, Brenley, Kenna, Hadley and Maebry. The older girls are all active showing and are a big help whenever extra hands are needed on the farm. Lora and Marc Hilgendorf made the move to Nokomis in the spring of 2007 and so became the fifth generation to milk cows at the original Ruppert family farm. Their three children, Landon, Kaylee and Logan are an essential part of the farm’s day to day operations helping with calf chores and anything else asked of them.

Thank you for hosting this year’s Illinois State Holstein Picnic!

2022 Illinois State Show Dedication - Larry Kleiner

Larry Kleiner has been involved in the dairy industry in a variety of ways for a long, long, time earning a variety of nicknames in the process. Many of you may know him as Kooz. He earned the name in high school. He was a talented basketball player himself, and a popular pro basketball player for the Boston Celtics in the late 50’s and early 60’s was Bob Cousy – hence the name.

In the late 60’s, the style for young men was long hair and whisker. Larry, along with Scott Bunyard, helped show cattle on the summer fair circuit. They earned the nicknames Wooly Bugger #1 and Wooly Bugger #2. No one remembers which was #1 and which was #2.

Larry attended college for two years, and then settled with his wife, Sharon on the family dairy farm in Greenville. He farmed with his Dad, Lester under the Clovervale prefix. In 1979, Larry purchased a dairy farm with a rotary parlor – the “new” technology of the day – in the Fillmore Bingham area. They lived and dairy farmed there for 20+ years.

Larry served on the Board of Directors of Prairie State Select Sires in its formative years. During that time, Lee Oltmanns remembers that he acquired the nickname “iron jaw.” If you don’t know the details, you’ll have to ask Lee.

Larry has served in various capacities in the Illinois Holstein Association – working with the shows, the sales and helping to plan numerous state conventions to name a few. He has worked sales including the Clinton County Classic, Illinois State Sale and PDCA Calf Sale. There, he shares his talents as expert pedigree man using his knowledge of deep pedigrees on cow families. And many times, he

has moved up in the ranks to auctioneer.

In the late 1990’s, he milked cows and served as a National Holstein Association Representative covering the Midwest. After demonstrating his positive attitude towards the Holstein industry, he had been involved with for so many years, a new nickname arose – Warm and Fuzzy. It was quickly shortened to Fuzzy.

His son, Shad along with wife, Liz and their three children Ella, Lila and Silas live in the old homestead where Larry grew up. His Dad, Lester also grew up there, so it’s been in the family for a long time. They recently restored the 100-yearold barn on the property. His second son, Cody along with wife, Robin and their three children Clayton, Taylor and Rynn live just outside of Marine. To the grandkids, Larry is known as Popo. They enjoy fun family time on Greenville Lake where they own some property.

As the airport manager at the Greenville airport, Ron Debatin describes Larry’s duties as: 1) unlock the door, 2) turn on the light, 3) make coffee, 4) answer the phone, 5) sell fuel, if needed, 6) unplug the coffee pot, 7) turn off the light and 8) lock the door. It might involve a little more that that!

Many of you may not know Larry is also known locally as the “Beaver Creek Balladeer” due to his talents as the long time Sunday night DJ on the Greenville radio station – a job he just retired from about a year ago.

Larry still enjoys owning animals in partnerships, merchandizing internationally and recently selling an animal in the National Convention Sale. He is truly a multi-talented, dedicated family man, who has served the dairy industry well.

Congratulations Larry!

The National Holstein Convention is always a highlight of the summer. Michigan is proud to send Junior Members every year with scholarships from the adult and junior memberships. Michigan is home to a very competitive junior show. MJHA is proud to sponsor all the junior show and showmanship awards for the hard-working youth in the state.

The summer of 2022 has proven to be an incredibly busy one for the Minnesota Holstein Association! Our membership kicked off our calendar of summer activities with the Minnesota State Holstein Show, held June 13-18, 2022, in Perham, Minnesota. Callum McKinven sorted 138 head in the open show and Derrek Kamphuis placed 108 head in the junior show. The Minnesota Red & White State Show and a fitting and showmanship clinic from Katie Coyne also took place during the week.

Shortly after the conclusion of our state show, years of planning came to fruition as the MHA hosted the 2022 National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The convention featured host day farm tours to several of our MHA members’ farms, the first ever Data and

Innovations Summit, a video format for the National Sale and so much more!

The week would not have been possible without the support of our many MHA members who volunteered hours of time before and during the convention, and our incredibly generous sponsors. Midwest companies operating in all sectors of the dairy industry came together to support our event, and our membership could not be more grateful for their contributions.

The Midwest Fall National took place on August 31 during the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, Minnesota, where MHA members took home champion honors across the board. We look forward to seeing all of you soon at World Dairy Expo in Madison!

Shawano County hosts 2022 Futurity

The crisp fall-like weather was a fitting backdrop for the 2022 Shawano County Futurity “Legends of the Fall” on Saturday, September 3, 2022. Eleven exhibitors brought out their bovine beauties to compete for the crown of Futurity Champion. With a backdrop of beautiful fall flowers and banners celebrating all 39 of the past Supreme Champions of the Shawano County Open Dairy Show, exhibitors embraced the theme, and many dressed as their own favorite legends. The legends portrayed included Johnny Cash, June Carter-Cash, Reba McIntyre, Lane Frost, Beth Dutton and Dolly Parton.

The owners of these cows believed in their promise as young calves and entered them in the futurity back in early 2020. The futurity has come to be a highlight of the fair each year bringing in a large crowd to experience the event. This year’s Masters of Ceremonies were Dale Sabo and Allen Kohn, who were both key individuals in establishing a great dairy show and youth dairy project within Shawano County. The judge for the evening was Jerome Meyer of Columbus, and he did a wonderful job of communicating with the audience the importance of events like the futurity to help connect our farmers and farm families to those outside of

agriculture.

The eleven cows exhibited included a Brown Swiss, two Jerseys, two Red and White Holsteins and six Holsteins. There were three cows left in contention at the middle of the ring as judge Jerome Meyer announced third place to Betley Family Farms with Bella-Ridge Going Solo who was also named the production winner and was escorted by Claire Betley. Second place was awarded to Synergy Family Dairy for Synergy Tattoo Marley escorted by Carmen Haack. Finally, the winner was crowned, Synergy Spike’s Sequel-Red escorted by Evan Jauquet. Best Dressed winners for the evening included Colin Wussow (Johnny Cash), Tammy Nygren (Dolly Parton) and Evan Jauquet (Lane Frost).

As the futurity wrapped up, Legendairy Cookies and Creamery delivered homemade ice cream and cookie sandwiches for the crowd to enjoy. This was made possible by donations and help from local dairy farmers, Shawano County Dairy Promotions and the Shawano County Ag Ambassadors. The Shawano County Futurity Committee would like to thank all of the generous sponsors who made this celebration of our local dairy industry possible.

36th Annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity

The 36th annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity was held on Saturday, August 13 at the Wisconsin State Fair. Judge Molly Sloan of Marshall, Wis., placed the five entries for the 3-year-old class and eight cows in the inaugural Anniversary Class. The Anniversary Class consisted of cows that had been entered in a previous year’s show.

The winner of this year’s 3-year-old show was Ryan-Vu Cinderdoor Round-Up exhibited by Dylan and Cameron Ryan of Fond du Lac. Round-Up also had the honor of winning the Best Udder award, sponsored by CentralStar Cooperative, and Best Bred & Owned sponsored by Brian Greenman, Rural Mutual Insurance Agent. Dylan and Cameron were also the winning junior entry with awards sponsored by Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys and the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Associations.

Second place was awarded to Milgene Jordy Jazz It Down exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farms LLC of Hustisford. The Hildebrandts received $750 sponsored by International Protein Sires.

Placing third this year was Milgene Splendid Slam Jam, also exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farms LLC. They receive $500 sponsored by Agropur USA. Slam Jam was also the winner of the Top Fat and Protein Production award sponsored by Brian Greenman, Rural Mutual Insurance Agent.

In the Anniversary Class, eight outstanding entries ranging from four to eight years old competed for cash prizes. The winner of this class was Milgene Diamond In The Rough exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farms LLC. Cash prizes for the Anniversary Class were sponsored by Thorn Creek Insurance and Compeer Financial.

Placing second in the Anniversary Class was Ryan-Vu Armani Design exhibited by Ryan-Vu Holsteins of Fond du Lac. Third place went to Milgene Just A Game-ET exhibited by Ariona, Tianda and Treyton Hildebrandt.

The evening’s program was led by our Mistress of Ceremonies, Jill Makovec. She introduced the dignitaries in attendance, award sponsors, and cows. Dignitaries at this year’s show included Ron Sersland, representing International Protein Sires, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Maddy Hensel, Alice in Dairyland Taylor Schaefer, and Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs Jackie Rosenbush.

The Wisconsin Holstein Association is extremely grateful for all of the sponsors for this year’s All-Breeds Futurity. Major sponsors include Compeer Financial, International Protein Sires, Agropur USA and Thorn Creek Insurance Services. We would like to thank all of the committee members, volunteers and sponsors for helping make this event possible.

We hope we will see everyone at the 2023 WHA All-Breeds Futurity at next year’s Wisconsin State Fair on August 12, 2023.
