Hi Everyone,

Well, another World Dairy Expo has come and gone! Before you know it we will be getting in to the holiday season. I hope many of you had a chance to take in Expo in some way. Here at Berryridge, we hosted a World Wide Sires tour on the Tuesday of Expo. In addition to viewing bull daughters, there were also educational stations. Zoetis presented on genomics and the connection to calf health and Lodi Veterinary Care did a calf lung ultrasound demonstration. Splitting into three groups allowed for better cattle viewing plus more of a chance for us to answer questions.

On October 12 we welcomed our newest WHA employee, EmmaRae Brown. Please extend a warm welcome to her when you have the chance. Right out of the gate she is tackling the membership drive. You should have received your renewal cards in the mail, so please take a few minutes and take care of those. It is easy to forget if it is not done promptly.

An exciting bit of news to share is that Laura will be heading down under to Australia in early January as part of a joint venture between International Protein Sires and Wisconsin Holstein Association with a grant provided by WI DATCP to promote Wisconsin exports. Laura will of course be promoting Wisconsin Holsteins

while in Australia. Breeders who wish to do some potential marketing to an international audience should contact her to discuss options.

I would also like to thank all who responded to the show survey. Most of you offered wide-ranging and very thoughtful comments. These responses are exactly what the Board was looking for. We certainly now have the information we need to make a decision on keeping state show as is or opening it up.

As I mentioned earlier, the holidays are very much on the horizon. With Thanksgiving up first it is never too soon to reflect on what we are thankful for. Certainly, very high on my list of things to be thankful for are the great people that I have met and the friends that I have made over these past years serving on the Holstein Board!

Obituaries

Annette Kay Ostrom, 49, of De Pere, was called to her home in heaven October 19, 2022, surrounded by her loving family after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. Annette was born Oc-tober 30, 1972, in Sheboygan Falls, a daughter to Gladys (Justinger) and the late Hans Palm. She attended Sheboygan Falls High School and University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received a degree in agriculture in 1995. On December 28, 2007, she married James J. Ostrom and settled in De Pere, where they raised four children. In both her professional and private lives, Annette cared deeply about people and paid attention — a wonderful combination that uplifted all who knew her. She understood that when it came to a person’s family, there were no “little things.” Remember-ing the names of a friend or colleague’s children wasn’t enough — Annette knew their ages and their life goals, building warm connections with everyone. That incandescent compassion could not overshadow a fierce strength that was never more apparent than during her brave fight against cancer. Annette never lost her grace, never lost her fortitude, never lost her faith.

Annette was a beloved figure in the Wisconsin dairy industry, both as a long-time business manager for Zoetis, as well as for her passion for the dairy-cattle-showing community. Just weeks before her passing, she was at the World Dairy Expo in Madison supporting family, friends and her own highly successful show-cow team. Annette served as a co-founder of Dairy Cares of Wisconsin, a non-profit organization that has raised more than $2 million in support of Children’s Wisconsin (formerly Children’s Hospital of

Wisconsin). Her selfless spirit and kindness live on in the children and families that have benefited from those efforts. In 2017, Annette and her husband, Jim, ac-cepted the “Wisconsin Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award” on behalf of Dairy Cares during National Philanthropy Day. Though her name was etched onto the plaque, Annette always insisted she accepted the award on behalf of a large team of volunteers of which she was just one.

Ultimately, nothing brought Annette more joy than watching her family grow and develop into outstanding young adults: Carlie, Mac, Shelby and Tristen were sources of pride, inspiration and good humor. Above all else, motherhood and family were Annette’s touchstones. Annette leaves behind her husband Jim; her four children Carlie, Mac, Shelby and Tristen; her mother Gladys; brothers Dean (Ruth Ann) Palm, Howards Grove, and Larry (Kathy) Palm, DePere; sister Heidi (Tom) Haack, Sheboygan Falls; mother-in-law Mary Bahlke, Watertown; father-in-law Donald (Linda) Ostrom, Oconomowoc; brothers-in-law Glenn (Irina) Ostrom, Greenville, Craig (Heidi) Ostrom, Wauwatosa, and Lance (Laurel) Ostrom, Concord, Mass.; and sister-in-law Sue Ellen (Mark) Pernitz, New Glarus. Annette also is survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her loving father Hans Palm and grandparents. A special thank you to the amazing community of friends, colleagues, caregivers and loved ones who rallied around Annette throughout her courageous battle. The family would like to thank Dr. Dan Koster, who diagnosed her illness immediately and provided exceptional care until the day she passed. On the good days and the bad, in the victories and setbacks, Annette never struggled alone.

WHA welcomes EmmaRae Brown as Director of Marketing and Membership

The Wisconsin Holstein Association (WHA) is pleased to welcome EmmaRae Brown as the new Director of Marketing and Membership. EmmaRae started with WHA on October 12. Her role will revolve around maintaining the WHA membership database, helping to create membership programming, creating social media campaigns and working with the sponsorship program.

EmmaRae is May 2021 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where she earned a degree in Animal Science. She grew up in Oregon, Wisconsin and was an active member in 4-H and FFA. During college, EmmaRae spent two years working for Hill-Ton Holsteins as a milker. It was there that she learned more about the Registered Holstein breed and WHA programs. She has always had a strong passion for agriculture and hopes to help educate the public about Wisconsin’s dairy industry through working with the royalty program and working with the membership.

Outside of work, EmmaRae enjoys riding and competing with horses, hiking, canoeing, photography, and spending time with her friends, family, partner, Kevin Lubinski and dog, Indigo.

Breeder Profile

District 7: Betley Farms

The Betley family has been incredibly successful in the showring the last few years, truly making a name for themselves. Behind the rosettes and banners is a well-managed commercial dairy and show operation where teamwork is vital.

Betley Family Farms has 3200 milking Holsteins with 200 of them being registered. Owned by Jeff, Jena, Claire and Jacob Betley, the family and their team of employees focuses on working with cows that are profitable and produce high quality milk as the main goal of the dairy. In addition to the production side, the family and their herd managers, Trent and Laura Styczynski, work with a subset of animals enrolled in a show program.

The Betley family started their operation in 1943 in their current location near Pulaski. Jeff’s grandfather Felix started farming with 13 cows and 40 acres while also working a factory job. Naturally, many changes occurred over the years to get the farm to the 3200-cow and 5400-acre dairy it is today. In 1991, Jeff came home to the farm where they milked 220 cows and gradually increased that number to 400. The current facility was constructed in 2006 and the herd number increased to 1000 at that time. From there, the herd has grown to what it is today.

“We employ a well-trained and established team of 32 employees which includes both the herd and shop personnel,” Jena says. “Everyone has their specialty in a certain area(s) which creates the success in every aspect that takes to make the farm run smoothly and efficiently day after day.”

Jeff and Jena are still very active with daily tasks. Claire and Jacob are also involved, working with the youngstock and assisting with daily chores. Off the farm, the family is involved in the Pulaski FFA and Alumni and the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Jeff is currently on the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin Board of Directors and the town planning and zoning committee.

About five years ago, Claire and Jacob became interested in showing at the Shawano County Fair and Wisconsin State Fair. Claire got hooked on showing young when Heather Jauquet shared

her love for Registered Holsteins with her and let her show a calf, Always In Love-Red, at the county fair. The next year, Claire’s first show calf was purchased, MD-West-View OK Siri-Red-ET EX-90. As the years went on, these animals had calves of their own and this continued to grow their show aspirations.

In 2019, OCD Jo Lionking-Red-ET, VG-88, was purchased from Oakfield Corners Dairy in the World Classic Sale. In 2019 she was a member of the Nominated All-American Junior Best Three group for the Lambs and was herself Nominated Junior All-American Fall Yearling in 2020, making her the family’s first All-American nomination.

Lionking has proved to be an incredible transmitter of type to her offspring. She has produced two Junior All-American nominees and three All-American nominations, with hopes for additional nominations for this year in the U.S. and Canada. This year at World

Dairy Expo, her three daughters claimed the first Junior Best Three group. A group of daughters also earned the Betley’s All-Wisconsin Red & White Junior Best Three this summer. Lionking is the dam of Betley Unstp Lionize-Red-ET, the 2021 Reserve Junior Champion of the junior and open shows at the International Red & White Show. Lionize is now owned by Westcoast Holsteins and was first winter yearling this year at World Dairy Expo. Lionize, along with her sisters and a select few others, have given the Betleys a lot of success in the last two years.

“The offspring of Lionking are extremely consistent. We have sold some this spring that have done well for their owners along with finding a new favorite every other day at home,” Jena says.

Trent and Laura Styczynski started working with Claire and Jacob on the show program in 2020 which really took it to the next level. Both have an extensive background in the show world, working for some of the top show herds in the country, and this knowledge has maximized performance of the registered cattle.

“We have learned the importance of feeding heifers to maintain proper condition while still considering the overall health of the cattle,” Jena says. “When Trent and Laura joined us, they worked side by side with the kids to teach them why this project is so important to give 110% because the work is done at home 360 days a year and not the five days we get to exhibit them in a show ring.”

By far, this summer has been one of the highlights of their show success. The family bred and exhibited the Supreme Champion Heifer at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair, Betley Lightsout-RedET. She was also the Supreme Champion Bred and Owned Heifer. Moving into late August, the Betleys exhibited four heifers, had four class winners, and won Junior Champion of the Junior Show and had Junior Champion and Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show at the Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show.

The family also enjoys exhibiting at the District 7 Holstein Show, North American International Livestock Exposition, and the Shawano County Fair.

The breeding program at Betley Farms has evolved since adding more type-focused animals as well as with how the industry has changed as a whole.

“Knowing that all heifers do not develop into really good show cows, we need to make sure we are helping the process of competition both in the ring and in the normal day life at the farm,” Trent says.

The team has been evaluating traits to fit all of these aspects. Bulls used aren’t extreme in stature, have improved DPR and better pin setting and foot and leg composites. Giving up a little height in the

black bloodlines is alright with them since it’ll give them a more moderately framed, profitable cow.

Working with the red bloodlines has been a bit more challenging over the years since there are only certain red bulls that are available. Similar to breeding the black and whites, they watch for stature, udder composite and DPR.

Some of the sires they are using in the red and white world are Altitude, Unstopabull, Analyst, Jordy, Architect, Atomic RC, Showtime RC, and Moovin RC. On the black and white Holsteins they are using Crushabull, Crushtime, King Doc, Delta Lambda, Eye Candy, Chief, Sidekick, Doorman, and Thunderstorm.

While show animals are fun to work with, both show and commercial animals need to be profitable and provide high quality milk. “Getting that task done daily includes a lot of strategy, time commitment, and motivation,” Jena says. “Breeding good cows for milk production along with continuing to monitor sire selection for both commercial and type only benefits future endeavors.”

On the commercial animals, the Betleys are selecting bulls on the traits of health, modern size, and production. They are believers in DWP$ to where they set weekly benchmarks on what genetic lines they want to continue and what lines they will end and breed to beef.

The team at Betley Farms has had success with Alta Genetics’ breeding programs. Working with them has allowed a better controlled inventory of animals since lower genetic animals are bred to beef.

For more than 10 years in a row, Betley Family Farms has been awarded the milk quality award from Land O’ Lakes. “That to us is very important because of the management practices taken daily and the outlook to the future takes time, dedication, and a solid team on both the dairy and the cropping side of the business to continue our success and goals of our dairy,” Jena says.

Moving forward, there are big construction plans for the farm. They are currently in the planning process of building a methane digester and solar system to provide energy to the surrounding community and businesses in northeast Wisconsin. To the family, being environmentally friendly is important and the system is expected to be in operation by spring of 2023.

On the facilities side, plans and construction of a facility for high genetic and genomic animals is in the works. Off the main farm, the Betleys raise about 80 calves for PEAK Genetics, some of their own high DWP$ females, as well as type females. At this time, they only care for youngstock, but looking forward they are excited to incorporate milking cows into the program this winter.

Athena started out her show season looking a bit immature, finishing 6th at the District 10 Show. She came home and got better every day after that! Being 1st Spring Calf and Honorable Mention Champion Holstein Calf at the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Show gave us a glimpse of things to come. We loved how Athena looked finishing 2nd Junior at the Wisconsin Summer Championship Show. After winning Supreme Champion Calf at the Sheboygan County Fair, Claire spent every evening for the next four weeks working with Athena. To see that hard work pay off at WDE was a truly thrilling experience. Then to finish 2nd Spring Calf in the International Holstein Show was the icing on the cake! We can’t wait to enter Athena in our IVF program and to begin the hunt for a fourth generation of Madison banners for this cow family!

Thanks to the Weigel family for making Athena available as an embryo. We have two more on the way this winter. Thank you John Scott for the use of his recipients and the excellent care he gave Athena up to weaning; Brady Bleck for clipping her all summer long; Travis Krohlow for making her look amazing at Madison; the Nobles for being our “Rock.” The Blecks and Meyers for their guidance during WDE. RED & WHITE CHAMPIONS 2022

Ms Ransom-Rail BethRed-ET has a long list of accomplishments from 2022 with her biggest being named Senior, Grand Champion and Champion Bred & Owned at the International Red & White Show.

She is owned by Milk Source, Laurie Fischer and Ransom-Rail and bred by Ransom-Rail and Bob Landis. At the 2022 Midwest National Spring Show, Milk Source and Laurie Fischer purchased Bob Landis’ share.

Beth is from the same family as the Champion Bred & Owned of the International Holstein Show, Ms Beautys Black Velvet EX96. Black Velvet is a full sister to Beth’s granddam, Ms Beautys Bombshell EX-93. Beth’s dam is an EX-94 Absolute. Their third dam is Ms Excels Dundee Beauty EX-95.

In 2022, Beth was undefeated in the 4-year-old class. She was first 4-Year-Old in the Midwest Spring Red & White Show and at the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show. In the Red & White Show she was named Grand Champion, was Honorable Mention Grand Champion of the Holstein Show, and was Champion Bred & Owned in both.

The partners plan to get her into an IVF program this fall. She has daughters by Latenite and Believe.

Milk Source and Ransom-Rail have a passion for showing cattle and have partnered since 2017 when Milk Source purchased part of Co-Vale Dempsey Dina in the Radiance at Ransom-Rail Sale. Since then they have partnered on a number of successful show winners including: Oak-Ridge-K GChip Turbo, Ms Ransom-Rail Beth-Red, Jacobs Doorman Victoire and Jacobs Control Brisk.

Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion of the International Red & White Show: Antia Absolute Joline-Red Antia Absolute JolineRed was named the Reserve Senior Champion and Reserve Grand Champion this year at WDE. She was purchased by Milk Source and Laurie Fisher at World Dairy Expo in 2018 and has been shown extensively ever since.

Her long list of accolades includes being the first Junior 3-YearOld and Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 2018. That same year she was the Reserve All-American Red & White Junior 3-Year-Old. 2019 brought success with being Honorable Mention Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair, Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show and Reserve All-American 4-Year-Old. With no World Dairy Expo in 2020, Joline made the trip to Ohio for the North American Open Dairy

Cattle Show where she won the 5-year-old class in the Red and White Show. Also in 2020, she was named Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show. She repeated that Grand Champion title at the 2021 Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show before heading to the big dance and topping the International Red & White Show as the Grand Champion.

At this year’s Wisconsin Summer Championship Red and White Show she was the first 125,000 lb. Cow, Grand Champion and Best Udder of the Show.

Joline has a fresh red Diamondback daughter and calves by Analyst. They have plans to enroll Joline in an IVF program.

Champion Bred & Owned of the Junior Show: Milksource Awesome Time-Red

Milksource Awesome TimeRed is a junior 2-year-old homebred granddaughter of Silvermine Advent TallyRed EX-93 owned by Tristen Ostrom. Time-Red was second and first junior, and Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show at the 2022 Wisconsin Red & White Championship Show. She was second, first Junior, Best Udder, Best Bred and Owned and Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show at the 2022 International Red & White Show. Time-Red is due back for the summer of 2023.

Reserve Intermediate Champion: Milksource Tantrum-Red-ET

Claiming the Reserve Intermediate Champion title during the International Red & White Show was Milksource Tantrum-Red-ET EX-92. This Unstopabull from Strans-Jen-D Tequila-Red EX-96 is no stranger to the winner’s circle.

In 2020, she was first Winter Yearling and Junior Champion at the North American Dairy Show in Circleville, Ohio. She was then named All-American Winter Yearling. 2021 was also a good year for Tantrum as she was first Senior 2-Year-Old and Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Midwest Spring Red & White Show. She repeated these honors at the Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show. At WDE that fall she was second Senior 2-Year-Old and later named Reserve AllAmerican Senior 2-Year-Old.

Before coming to WDE this year, Tantrum was first Senior 3-YearOld in both the Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show and Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show. In the red show she was also Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion.

Tantrum puts in the work at home too, making a 2-year-old record of 25,237 4.6 1162 3.0 750. She is due back for the summer of 2023.

Senior and Grand Champion, Champion Bred & Owned: Ms Ransom-Rail Beth-Red-ET

Arb-Flo-Spr HoneybunET was the Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion for Jacey and Hadley Ross during this year’s International Junior Red & White Show. She is an Avalanche from an EX-90 Ladd-P that goes back to Quality-Ridge Stormi Hazel EX-96.

The Ross family purchased Honeybun at the Price of Gold Sale as a fall yearling in the early months 2019. She was a stylish heifer with a nice pedigree. She eventually made her way to Maple Leigh Futures in Delavan, Wis., where she has developed into a tremendous show cow.

Honeybun was named Grand Champion of the Red & White Western Fall National Junior Show in Utah as a senior 2-year-old. She won Grand Champion of the junior and open shows at the 2021 Midwest Spring Red & White Show as a senior 3-year-old, and that same year was third Senior 3-Year-Old at the International Red & White Show and Honorable Mention All-American. Honeybun claimed the Reserve Grand Champion title of the Wisconsin Summer Championship Red & White Junior Show in 2021 and 2022.

Honeybun is due in the spring with hopes to compete as a 5-yearold next year.

Reserve Intermediate Champion: Schluter Atlanta-Red-ET

Evan Hathaway originally purchased Schluter Atlanta-Red from the Spotlight Selections Sale in 2021. He had high interest in Atlanta’s pedigree and the potential this heifer had because of the success within her cow family. He hoped for Atlanta to follow in the footsteps of her granddam, Hilrose Advent Anna EX-95.

Atlanta is the daughter of Hilrose DB AllieRed-ET EX-91, and the granddaughter of prominent Red & White brood cow Hilrose Advent Anna-Red EX-95. Anna’s titles include Wisconsin Cow of the Year in 2018, Nasco International Type & Production Winner 2018, second Aged Cow in the International Red & White Show 2016, and numerous All-American wins and nominations.

In July 2022, Matthew and Elizabeth Gunst and Smith-Crest became partners on Atlanta with Evan. Atlanta’s exceptional pedigree and marketability combined with her tremendous udder made her an extremely exciting young cow they were all eager to be a part of.

An interesting facet about Atlanta’s pedigree is that Matthew and Elizabeth’s father, Dennis Gunst, and uncle, Willis Gunst, purchased and developed Atlanta’s sixth dam, Dreamstreet Enhancer Alicia 3E94 GMD DOM, in 1989.

Before claiming Reserve Intermediate Champion of the International Junior Red & White Show, Atlanta was third winter calf at the Mid-East Fall National Red & White Show in 2020. In 2022 she was Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the District 5 Show, second Senior 2-Year-Old, first junior and Honorable

Mention Intermediate Champion of the Wisconsin Summer Championship Red & White Junior Show.

Atlanta is checked pregnant and due again this coming June for the next show season. She has also gained embryo interest following the Wisconsin Summer Championship Show and World Dairy Expo and will begin IVF in November.

Atlanta is housed at Smith-Crest Holsteins, a show and boarding facility located in Watertown owned by Travis and Holly Smith along with their three children: Leah, Hattie and Blake. The farm focuses on type and works with their clients to achieve breeding and genetic goals. Their clients are from three continents and across the US. Smith-Crest has a long history of owning and boarding prizewinning animals including the 2016 and 2017 Holstein Association USA Star(s) of the breed and several elite IVF donor dams.

Matthew and Elizabeth Gunst own and operate Ladinodale Holsteins & Jerseys and Boarding where they board their own heifers and around 25 deep pedigree and show heifers. Matthew and Elizabeth have developed several Junior All-American and AllAmerican Nominations over the past five years. Both have served on the Wisconsin Junior Activities Committee and recognized as Wisconsin and National YDJM winners and Matthew was a National DJM finalist in 2022.

Evan Hathaway is a senior at Barneveld High School and serves on the Wisconsin Junior Activities Committee. He enjoys breeding, exhibiting and fitting dairy cattle at all levels of competition.

Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show: Kress-Hill Spicy-Red

Kress-Hill Spicy-Red is an Altitude out of Ms Kress-Hil SaphireRed EX-92, who was the Junior Champion of the International Red & White Junior and Open Shows in 2018. Saphire was also the Supreme Junior Champion Heifer that year.

Earlier this year, Spicy was Junior Champion Red & White open and junior shows at the 2022 California State Show. She was also Junior Champion of the Western Spring National Junior Red & White Show and Honorable Mention in the open Red & White show.

The Ross family obtained Spicy from the Rock the Ledge online cattle sale hosted by Reggie and Krysty Kamps and Brandon and Shi Ferry in the spring of 2021. They loved her balance and depth throughout when she was just a little winter calf.

Spicy is due in the spring and they hope she will put on a good udder and be ready to show as a senior 2-year-old next year.

Arizona Dairy milks 3,200 cows in Gila Bend, Arizona. They have been running the operation since 1973. The team at Arizona Dairy is passionate about getting the most out of their milk and improving their herd’s genomics.

What is the history of National Red & White and how did it get started?

The Red & White Dairy Cattle Association, originally the Red & White Dairy Cattle Society, was formed in 1964 to help in the understanding and transition of accepting the red gene for coat color within the Holstein breed. Red & Whites faced hardships until the 1970s when it finally became more accepted to have Red & Whites on farms. Many changes have happened since the creation of RWDCA. Beginning solely as a focus on Red & White Holsteins, our association covers all dairy animals that possess the red gene for coat color. Also, we have transitioned to only a governing board and one staff member. This move brought on the partnership with Holstein Association USA for records processing, type classification, and organization of the herd book. Partnering has now allowed for a higher focus on our youth members and the quality of genetics in our breed.

What services and programs do you offer to members?

We take pride in helping our membership put on successful shows each year in all regions across the U.S. to provide marketing opportunities for each of them. From helping with show promotion, sponsorship, and assisting at shows when available, we enjoy watching our membership present world-class Red & Whites all over the country throughout the year.

At the conclusion of the year, we take the All-American Nomination and selection process very seriously to, again, provide our members with opportunities to market their cattle and genetics not only in the United States, but across the country through being nominated and selected as All-American.

The Red Bloodlines is our publication that is a part of our membership fee. We have two issues each year that focuses both on All-Americans and members excited about what they have to offer.

Tell us about your All-American process and how to enter.

You can find the online entry form and printable form on our website at https://www.redandwhitecattle.com/. You will need to submit your animals information, placings, registration paper, and photo. Please be sure to carefully review all rules and specifications. All of this is due November 15 by 11:59pm.

What junior programs and events do you offer?

Our junior members have quite a few opportunities available to them at this time, however there are a few other programs that will be available in 2023 to our youth. Please be sure to follow RWDCA on Facebook and Instagram for any and all updates as we release new programs and opportunities!

We are excited to offer three $1000 scholarships each year to students recently graduating high school, or attending college. Additionally, we have a RWDCA Queen program that allows one youth per year to serve the association through attending shows across the country and meeting with members at each of those shows. Furthermore, the queen program offers a $1,000 scholarship at the conclusion of the reign to assist that youth in pursuing their goals.

Why should someone join RWDCA and how do they do that?

There are many options for becoming a member of RWDCA. Membership forms are available on the website for both Junior and Adult Memberships. Additionally, there is an online form available as well on our website. They can also call or text 608-790-5595, or email rwdcainfo@gmail.com.

Junior Membership is a one-time fee until the youth turns 21. Adult memberships renew each year in the spring.

Looking ahead

We are looking at expanding our Junior programs, putting together a 2023 National Red & White Sale, and in 2024 we are looking to gather for a condensed National Convention and National Sale. We are always looking for suggestions on programs and opportunities for our members to take advantage of and how we can better serve our membership so that we continue to thrive for years to come.

Oakfield Solom Footloose-ET earned the Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion honors at last year’s International Holstein Show. But 2022 was her year, earning the Grand Champion title of the International Holstein Show and then being named Supreme Champion Cow later that day.

Her legacy began long ago at Duckett Holsteins with Harvue Roy Frosty EX-97. Footloose is a granddaughter of the two-time World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion. Her dam is Duckett-SA Braxton Frisco EX-94. Footloose and Frosty are the only granddaughter and granddam pair to both be named Supreme Champion at WDE.

In addition to these milestones, Footloose recently scored EX-96. She joins two other Duckett-owned animals who recently scored EX-96, Ms Beautys Black Velvet-ET and Dream Team NK Amelia.

Along with Tim and Sharyn Abbott, Mike and Julie Duckett purchased Footloose from Oakfield Corners Dairy in New York last May. Before coming to Wisconsin, she already had showring prominence being Nominated All-American Junior 2-Year-Old and named All-American Junior 3-Year-Old under the care and ownership of Oakfield Corners Dairy. Then in 2021 she added Unanimous All-American 4-Year-Old to her resume.

The Abbotts and Ducketts decided to offer Footloose at the Summer Selections sale in June 2021 where Vierra Dairy, known for their showring success with Jerseys, partnered with them to purchase this cow.

During the International Holstein Show this year at World Dairy Expo, Footloose topped the 5-Year-Old class, was tapped Grand Champion then walked under the spotlight all the way to Supreme Champion.

“We love the business and enjoy marketing cattle with show ring potential and high type. Having the opportunity to purchase Footloose was a dream come true with Frosty being her granddam. Frosty is the cow that gave us a name in the business,” Mike and Julie say.

Reserve Senior Champion and Honorable Mention Grand Champion: Oak-Ridge-K GChip Turbo

After claiming the Intermediate Champion title last year at the International Holstein Show, Oak-Ridge-K Gchip Turbo returned in 2022 to become the Reserve Senior Champion and Honorable

Mention Grand Champion behind fellow Wisconsin cow, Footloose.

Before winning the 4-Year-Old class at WDE, Turbo was named Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show for Milk Source and Ransom-Rail.

She was purchased at the 2021 Midwest National Spring Show from the Morrison family. In 2021, she would be the first Senior 3-Year-Old, Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of both the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show and Wisconsin Summer Championship Holstein Show, prior to her Expo win.

Turbo was bred by Jim and Janet Kappers of Minnesota. She is a Gold Chip from a GP-83 Windbrook, then an EX-91 Roy, ErnestAnthony SD Tobi 3E-96 and Alanvale Inspiration Tina EX-95. Both Tobi and Tina have their own show accolades.

Turbo will enter an IVF program this fall and has calves by Delta Lambda and Thunderstorm. She had a 3-year-old record of 28,318 pounds of milk, 1116 pounds of fat and 825 pounds of protein.

Champion Bred & Owned of the Holstein Show – Ms Beautys Black Velvet

Winning the 6-Year-Old and Older Cow class and being named Champion Bred & Owned of the Show was Ms Beautys Black Velvet EX-96. Originally bred and owned by Triple T Holsteins of Ohio, she was purchased by Mike and Julie Duckett as a 2-year-old.

She is a Goldwyn out of Ms Excels Dundee Beauty EX-95, the AllAmerican Aged Cow in 2011. Triple T and Vierra Dairy joined in a partnership with Ducketts at last year’s World Dairy Expo on Black Velvet.

Black Velvet earned Reserve All-American and Reserve AllCanadian honors in 2019 and was also the Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Royal Winter Fair the same year. 2021 was Velvet’s first World Dairy Expo, the same year she earned the Unanimous AllAmerican 5-YearOld title.

Senior Champion, Grand Champion and Supreme Champion Cow – Oakfield Solomon Footloose

Ms Thunderstorm Eternity is a descendant of Krull Broker Elegance EX-96, who was no stranger to the show ring either, but is best known for her ability to transmit to her offspring. Eternity’s dam, Floydholm Mc Emoji-ET EX-95, was the 2019 Intermediate Champion of the International Holstein Show and the winner of the WHA-All Breeds Futurity. She is backed by 10 EX dams.

Eternity was nominated All-American Winter Calf for 2021. This year she was the first Winter Yearling and Junior Champion at the Wisconsin Championship Holstein Show. At WDE she placed second in the Winter Yearling class and was named Reserve Junior Champion. She is due in early spring.

Eternity is owned by the Femme Fatale syndicate which consists of partners the late Annette Ostrom, Jen Keuning, Sarah Wendorf, Keri Vosters and Mandi Bue.

Forward Blossum EX-93 is bred and owned by Emma, Sara, Wyatt and Clarie Dorshorst. She has been the anchor of the Dorshorst family’s show string for the past several years, placing well at county and District shows since she was a winter calf. This past year she was Grand Champion of the Junior and Open Shows at the District 4 Holstein Show.

Blossum is a Goldchip from a VG-87 Day then an EX-90 Guthrie. This cow family features high components and many are Red and White. There have been Junior All-American and All-American Nominations from this cow family in the past.

Blossum has a VG 2-year-old by Doorman and an Excellent daughter by Solomon. She also has several calves due in the next six months sired by Moovin and Doorman. She has calved five times as a 6-year-old.

Emma, Sara, Wyatt and Claire raise their heifers at the family’s farm just south of Marshfield. The milking cattle are well cared for by friends and neighbors, Adam and Jenna Borchert, at TreeHayven farm. They have an RHA on 10 cows of 26,113 4.1 1062 3.2 829, with an average classification score of 88 points. Of the 10 cows classified, 7 are scored Excellent.

Emma is a sophomore at UW-Madison majoring in dairy science and vocal performance. Sara is a high school senior; Wyatt is a sophomore and Claire is in 8th grade. Emma and Sara are interested in veterinary medicine. Sara plays soccer and is a certified nurse’s aide. Wyatt plays football and enjoys the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Claire runs cross country, plays soccer and shoots archery. She also enjoys her cats, calves and chickens.

R-John Crushin on Courtney claimed the Reserve Senior Champion title after winning the 4-Year-Old class during the International Junior Holstein Show. She is owned by Jacey and Hadley Ross of Arizona Dairy Company.

Courtney is an EX-92 Crush from an EX Archrival then Silvermaple Damion Camomile EX-95. Camomile was the Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair in 2011. Courtney was purchased from John Cunningham in 2021. The Arizona Dairy group loved the quality of her udder and how balanced and complete she was. She was named the Intermediate Champion of the Wisconsin Summer Championship Junior Holstein Show in 2021. They plan to calve Courtney back in around mid-June so she can be competitive as a 5-year-old in 2023.

All of the Dorshorst kids enjoy dairy judging and dairy bowl. “We have been fortunate to participate in numerous international, national and state contests,” Emma says. While Sara stated that “winning Champion Bred and Owned is even more exciting than winning anything else!”

Blossum is the first animal with their new prefix, Forward Genetics. “It is an honor and privilege to show an animal that not only has success in the show ring, but also recognize that she has sentimental value and represents more than just a championship. Blossum represents new beginnings and we have all enjoyed the memories we have created with her. It was something that we never anticipated. Thank you to all who have helped us enjoy the experience!” Emma said.

The winning Spring Calf and Reserve Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show is the daughter of BudjonAbbott Alexandra-ET EX-93, who was the Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show in 2018. Alexandra’s dam is Walk-Era Dundee Annelise EX-95. In 2017, Annelise was Grand Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show and was Junior All-American 5-Year-Old. She has earned All-American nominations in both the junior and open contests.

Athena’s first show was the District 10 Holstein Show in June where she placed sixth and fourth junior. After coming home and hitting the hay rack, she won her class at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair and was Honorable Mention Calf Champion of the Holstein Show. At the Wisconsin Summer Championship Show she was fifth and second junior, making her Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin Spring Calf. Athena was also the Supreme Champion Heifer of the Sheboygan County Fair. Following her Reserve Junior Champion finish in the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo, Athena went on to place second in the International Holstein Show.

Kent Bindl and the rest of the family really loved Alexandra, owned by the Weigel kids, as a winter yearling in 2018. Kent mentioned to Ryan Weigel that if they ever had embryos for sale to let them know.

“Ryan sent us a text a couple years later that he was offering a package in the Badger Dairy Club Sale,” Kent said. “Seeing that they were Denvers we were very excited for the chance to have Doorman top and bottom on the pedigree and going back to the beautiful Annelise cow.”

The Bindl family resides in Plymouth on a small 20-acre hobby farm where they house their small herd of Registered Holstein heifers under the Elladaire prefix. They plan to enroll Athena in an IVF program this winter.

“Following the success of Athena, all three kids can’t wait for next year’s show season, especially since we have two full sisters to Athena due this winter,” Kent says.

Ella is a freshman at UW-Madison with the hopes of going to law school. Adam is a sophomore at Plymouth High School where he plays basketball and golfs. Claire is in 8th grade at St. John the Baptist School in Plymouth, where she is involved in basketball and volleyball and is Student Council Vice President.

All summer long the Harbaugh and Loehr kids have been showcasing their bred and owned animals at all levels of competition. Bella-Ridge Gins Ballerina has been one of these heifers and was named Junior Champion Bred & Owned Heifer at the International Junior Holstein Show after placing fourth as a Fall Calf.

Ballerina is a Warrior born on October 20. Her dam is Bella-Ridge Blck Solocup EX-91, sired by Solomon. Her grandam, Bella-Ridge Gins Beauty EX-94 and sired by Durham, was one of the first calves the kids had a lot of success showing. Beauty’s dam is Bella-View Shot of Gin who was EX-93 2E in Canada, and then the foundation of the Bella-Ridge partnership animals, Rosedale Go for Gin EX-93 2E.

The group finds it rewarding to see the generations of bred and owned animals and the success they have had in continuing to develop this family.

Jacob showed Ballerina this year and she was the first fall calf in group 1 and then Champion Bred and Owned Calf at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair. At the Wisconsin Summer Championship Show, she was seventh and fifth junior.

The partners will let Ballerina grow over the winter, get her bred and hopefully show her as a fall yearling.

All five kids, Jacob, Logan and Madison Harbaugh and Adella and Ainsley Loehr, are actively involved in Junior Holstein activities and in the daily care of their animals.

“It is rewarding to see them work together and learn from each other as they grow older. We are very proud of the success of our bred and owned animals this year. It was exciting to watch the three heifers we showed at the International Junior Holstein Show all win first bred and owned in their class,” Sara Harbaugh said on behalf of the partnership.

In addition to Ballerina, Bella-Ridge Jump Start, a Devour from Ms RollnView Jump4Fun-Red EX-91, was first bred and owned Spring Calf and Bella-Ridge Doc Drama, a King Doc from BellaRidge So Dramatic VG-87, was first bred and owned Summer Yearling.

The Wisconsin Holstein Association is searching for an eager dairy enthusiast looking to learn more about the industry and wanting to gain valuable experiences that can be utilized in any industry. Applicants attending a 2 or 4-year college are welcome to apply. It is not required to be majoring in an Agriculture field, but background in the dairy industry is preferred.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

Event Planning

• Attend all WHA sponsored summer events and other county Holstein events. These include the District Shows, Summer Championship Show, Showmanship and Judging Contest, Junior State Fair Holstein Show, WHA Futurity and Open State Fair Holstein Show.

• Work with WHA staff and committees to plan events such as the 2023 WHA Futurity, District Shows, and more. This may include inputing and finalizing show entries, organizing awards, volunteers and other details such as mailings and dignitary needs.

• Organize show booklets, meals, send correspondence before and after an event and archive final placing results.

Public Relations

• Ability to communicate to all areas of the Association in a timely manner

• A ssist in any communication materials needed for members or external media such as pamphlets, letters, bios and entry forms

• Work with external sponsors as it pertains to awards, signage and coordination of events

• Build valuable partnerships with industry partners

Web, Print and More

• Write press releases announcing upcoming events and summarizing placings and/ or winnings.

• Compile and publish updated marketing materials on WHA website such as press releases, entry forms, event details and imagery.

• Take photos of event winners when needed to post online and share with Director of Communications.

• Interview Wisconsin Holstein breeders and write profile articles as assigned by Director of Communications; this may require taking photos for the article.

• Opportunity to learn database management and design e-newsletter and other creative marketing pieces.

Preferred Knowledge:

• E xcellent communication, writing, organization and time-management practices

• Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time with strong prioritization skills

• Strong knowledge of PC operating systems (Mac experience a plus)

• High level of attention to detail and ability to focus

Background in dairy.

My parents started a small herd for both me and my brother, Lucas, back in 2001. I did not have a real interest in show cattle until I was about 10 years old. I went to my first county fair that year and absolutely fell in love with the industry. From then on, I have shown many breeds including Holstein, Red and White, Guernsey, Brown Swiss, Jersey, and Ayrshire, but I have always had a soft spot for my Red and Whites. I have exhibited an array of good animals for many different people at a state and national level and I have competed in showmanship at both state and national levels. A few of my most recent highlights include winning my heat and placing mid-pack in finals at the 2021 World Dairy Expo, winning 2022 Midwest Guernsey Show senior showmanship, and winning Champion Junior Bred and Owned at both the Midwest National Spring Show and District 5 Show with L&L-Genetics Dun Matilda-ET.

What got you involved in WHA and what activities do you take part in?

I got involved in the Wisconsin Holstein Association when my parents bought our first Registered Holstein, Sikkema-Star Rdolf Mindy-ET. I got more involved in the junior association in 2011 when I exhibited at a Wisconsin Holstein show with my very first bred and owned animal, L&L-Genetics Dun Mya-ET. Mya was one of our offspring from Mindy and she stood 10th in a really deep class of spring yearlings that year.

I am the District 5 Junior Holstein treasurer. I currently show at the Midwest National Spring Show, District 5 Show, Wisconsin Championship Show and World Dairy Expo along with a number of other shows in the colored breeds.

In addition to WHA, I am a member of the Wisconsin Junior Red and White Holstein Association.

What sparked your interest in Red and White Holsteins?

There is no great story for me when it comes to my interest in the Red and White Holstein. I decided to get into them because I liked the way they looked. Then, I looked into the benefits of Red and Whites and four benefits really stuck out to me. They have a higher fat and protein in their milk, they have a better heat tolerance, more resistance to mastitis and the most important one, they have a stronger immune system. I am always looking for ways to improve our animals and make them stronger and, in my opinion, breeding Red and Whites means you’re breeding a healthier and stronger cow that will have better longevity in both a commercial and a show setting.

What cow has been incredibly influential on your herd?

The cow that has been the most influential to my herd is Luck-E Malone Atoshi-Red-ET. Atoshi has had the most influence on our herd since she is the cow that gave us our first bred and owned Red and Whites and was our very first Red and White cow to get nominated All-American. Atoshi was a very sound cow, with a production record to back it. Although she loved being in the freestall, she went on to do well in the show world as well. Atoshi was Nominated All-American in 2019 and 2020, but sadly, she passed away in 2021. We have five daughters, four of which are milking and they look amazing. Atoshi transmits all of her good traits to her daughters and with the breeding program we use, I believe that we are developing some really feminine and sound young cows from this family.

Who are some of your current favorites and why?

Some of my favorite Red and Whites now are MsMr Jordy Dejavu-Red and Leawood Sassy Girl-Red. Both of these cows are max scored at EX-92. They both exhibit extreme dairy strength, width and power throughout, an incredible mammary system, and a great set of feet and legs. These two cows are the type of cows that everyone would like to have a barn full of. Not only have they done well in the show world for me, but they are going to have a huge impact on my herd for many years to come.

Another cow that is a favorite of mine is Crescentmead Wondergirl-Red. She showed really well as a heifer and she was the very first animal that I had the opportunity to go to the sale, pick her out, and purchase her without the guidance of anyone else for the first time. Wondergirl had a heifer calf in December 2021 that looks great and I cannot wait to see this calf and future calves continue to mature and improve my herd.

What is your breeding philosophy? What sires are you using?

When breeding my animals, I like to take five things into consideration. We look for bulls that are high type, have extreme strength, high production, longevity, and great health traits. When matching a cow to a bull in our herd we start at the cow, we identify all of the traits that we both like and dislike, we then move onto the bull. When matching a bull to that same cow, we focus on the bull that can help “fix” the most cons of the cow, while keeping those original five things in mind. We have been using a variety of different bulls lately, but the main ones are Mr Affection AnalystRed-ET, Trent-Way-Js Rompen-Red-ET, Riverdown Unstopabull, and Blondin Cheerful-Red.

Future plans for your Red and White Holsteins

My future plans for my reds are to continue to improve my herd and win Champion Junior Bred and Owned at either the Midwest National Spring Show or the Wisconsin Championship Show.

Junior Convention Contests & Activity Room

Are your juniors looking for things to do when they aren’t competing in Dairy Jeopardy or Dairy Bowl? The Activity Room will be open to view all the entries for convention contests, vote for People’s Choice winners and other educational and fun activities that juniors can participate in any time the room is open. Juniors that participate in the Activity Room contests will earn points for their county in the Premier County contest.

Ads, photos, crafts, and more! There are a ton of opportunities for recognition at junior convention in the Activity Room. Juniors can enter the Photography, Arts and Crafts, Folding Display, and Advertising contests. Drawing & Painting and Crafts has been combined into one contest with two divisions - junior and senior. For rules and age divisions of these contests, check out the Junior Handbook online on the junior awards page. All contest room entries must be taken or produced during 2022 by the junior member entering the project. Entries will be due by 5 pm on Friday, January 6.

YQCA Training

The WHA Young Adult Committee will once again be offering a training session for juniors to complete their YQCA requirements for the 2023 project year. The session will be held Sunday morning following Dairy Bowl finals and should last for one hour. The YAC will be covering the cost of the training session for juniors, however you MUST be registered in advance for your registration fee to be covered.

Hello, Wisconsin Holstein Followers!

Even though the temperatures are growing colder, my time as the Wisconsin Holstein Princess is not yet finished! I had an excellent time at World Dairy Expo! It was an incredible experience to be able to interact with dairy producers and experts from all over the globe. I truly enjoyed being able to have the best seat, down on the colored shavings during the Holstein shows. It was great to see Wisconsin’s dairy Industry well represented by the youth, showman, cattle, and trade show exhibits! Each year, I enjoy guessing what color that I think the shavings will

I have had a fantastic time representing the Wisconsin Holstein Association Royalty program so far this year! I would like to motivate juniors to attend and participate in one of the many contests! There is something for everyone - crafts, photography, quiz bowl, jeopardy, speaking, and more. My favorite contest has always been jeopardy! I hope to see you there!
