Obituaries Jerry L. Nauman Jerry L. Nauman, 58, of rural Norwalk passed away Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Tomah Memorial Hospital. He was born May 12, 1952 in Sparta, Wisconsin to Raymond L. and Virginia (Anderson) Nauman. He was baptized and confirmed as a child of our Lord at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ridgeville, where he remained a member throughout his life. He grew up in Coles Valley, and attended the Coles Valley School and graduated from Sparta Senior High School in 1970. He attended the UWMadison Farm & Industry Short Course and graduated from there in 1971. Jerry married his one true love, Marjorie M. Kroning on March 9, 1974 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. To this marriage, three children were born: Danielle Suzanne, Jeremy Keith and their special gift, Nicolette Marie. They have been blessed with one grandson, Austin Tyler. Jerry was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather. Jerry was a life-long farmer, and was a 5th generation Monroe County farmer. He was passionate in breeding and developing Registered Holsteins, and later Registered Jerseys. Jerry was a showring enthusiast, and enjoyed exhibiting his dairy cattle from boyhood on, and watching his children and later grandson continue. He enjoyed traveling to the shows, and the friends that came with that. One accomplishment he was particularly proud of was that his herd of Holsteins were ranked in the top 25 type herds in the nation in the early 1990s. Jerry was also a devoted Republican, and enjoyed being involved in the county, district and state parties and campaigns. This was another place where Jerry shined and enjoyed his many friends. Other interests included an avid passion for bowling, which he shared with Jeremy, until an injury sidelined him; photography, hunting and fishing with Austin and Nikki, and dabbling in genealogy research with Danielle. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Nauman; paternal grandparents Ervin and Lucy (VanDyke) Nauman; maternal grandparents Carl and Leah (Pratt) Anderson; father-in-law Clifford H. Kroning; and brother-in-law Larry L. Kroning. He is survived by his wife Margie of Norwalk, his children Danielle of Sparta; Jeremy and Nicolette, both of Norwalk. His grandson, Austin Nauman of Sparta; his father, Raymond L. Nauman of Norwalk; his mother-inlaw, Margaret Kroning of Soldiers Grove; close friend John Selin; four sisters: Kathy Braatz, Merry (Jerome) Kuderer, Laurie (Tom) Graber, Penny (Bill) Chambers. He is further survived by his brothers and sisters in law, Ruth Kroning, Richard (Peg) Kroning, Ginny (Rick) Foley, John Kroning, Janice (Bruce) Schellinger, Evie (John) Hamilton and Dean Kroning. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. The true measure of a person’s life is not in the quantity of time, but the quality, and the legacy left in those he leaves behind. Dad and Grandpa - we will always miss you and love you.

Charles Lind Charles A. Lind, 91, died Thursday, November 25, 2010 at Berlin Memorial Hospital, Berlin, WI. He was born on July 30, 1919, to John and Lydia (Yesse) Lind in the Town of Bloomfield, Waushara County, WI. He was baptized and confirmed at Emmaus Lutheran Church, Poy Sippi. He grew up on the family farm and attended Willow View Country School. He was employed at Kissingers Local sawmill and at the Dairy Dairy Cheese Factory in Poy Sippi. He

enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1941 and was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington, for basic training. His unit was sent to Australia, saw duty in New Guinea and the Phillipines in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1945. Charles married Lyda Sattler on May 4, 1947. The couple setteld on a farm in the town of Saxeville where they raised Registered Holstein at Lindside Farms. He was a member of the Holstein Association for 60 years and served as a director on the Waupaca-Waushara Holstein Board. He was also the dairy leader of the Cross Country 4-H club for 30 years. Charles became the rural mail carrier out of the Pine River post office where he served 25 wonderful years. He was Vice President and Director of the Farmers State Bank, Poy Sippi, and Treasurer of the late Glendale School District. He also served on the Emmaus Lutheran Church Council as elder and trustee and sang in the church choir for 50 years. Charles was also a member of the Fremont American Legion Post and former member of the disbanded Andersen Wendt Post of Poy Sippi. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lyda Lind of Pince River; their daughter, Patricia Lind (fiance, Bruce Hamilton) of Hudson; sons, Michael (Kathleen) Lind, Phillip (Donna) Lind, Pine River; grandchildren, Nathan Lind, Matthew (Stephanie) Lind, Melissa (Nathan) Nadjowski, Sarah Lind, Stephanie Lind, Andrew Lind and Derek Lind; great-grandchildren, Connor Lind, Emma and Theresa Nadjowski; sisters, Carolyn Schultz, Ripon; Myra Schonscheck, Oshkosh; and Lida (Norman) Miller, Fond du Lac; four sisters-in-law Stella Wendt, Marjory (Frank) Muscavitch, Marji Lind and Arlene Lind. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen Manske, Mae Dillman and Irene Hilke; and three brothers, Norman Lind, George Lind and Junior Lind; and brother-in-laws John Sattler Jr, Ray Schultz, Arnold Schonsckick and Harvey Wendt. Funeral services were held at Emmaus Lutheran Church, Poy Sippi. The burial with military rites were held at the Brushville Cemetary, town of Bloomfield. At Chuck’s request, Taps were played by his grandchildren, Stephanie and Derek Lind.

Robert Krohlow Robert F. Krohlow, age 84, passed away on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at his home. On July 1, 2004 he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma of the spine. We are grateful for his added years of life. He was born October 12, 1926, son of the late Robert E. and Bertha (Gother) Krohlow. On August 27, 1955, he was united in marriage to Gloria Blom. They were blessed with three sons, Marc, Craig and Neal. Bob enjoyed watching and playing sports: basketball and football at Bonduel High School, and then playing baseball for Navarino. He bowled for many years and enjoyed dancing, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. He was a farmer all his life, milking cows and then cash cropping the land. He also sold farm and home insurance for Hartland Cicero for many years. After selling the dairy cows he and Gloria enjoyed doing some traveling. They spent many wonderful January’s in Florida by their special friends, Kap and Mo Westphal. Bob was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Cicero. He served as chairman of the building committee for the church and added parish hall, both built in the 1960’s. He was a very generous man to his family and church. The dove, stained glass window will be a special remembrance of him. He is survived by his wife Gloria and their children: Craig (Marlene) Krohlow, and their children, Ryan (special friend Haley), Tiffany (Nick) Prodell and Travis; and son, Neal (Jill) Krohlow, and their children: Samuel, Bridget and Joseph; one brother Edward; one sister-in-law, Adeline “Pudge” (Oliver) Lerum, Seymour; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Marc; two sisters and their husbands, Irene (Elmer) Conradt and Gladys (Ivo) Huettl; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Edgar (Ruth) Krohlow and Byron Krohlow. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund for Immanuel Lutheran Church of Cicero has been established in Bob’s name. A special thank you to Bob’s oncologist, Dr. William Guenther and all the caring doctors, nurses, receptionists and volunteers at the cancer center and hospital at A.M.C. wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/February, 2011-9

Troy Opsal and children Felicia, Joey, Megan & Josh Troy’s children also help when they’re not busy with school. Oldest daughter Emily is a junior at Stevens Point, Megan is a sophomore at River Falls, Felecia is a junior in high school, Josh is a sophomore, and Joey is in 7th grade. While the Opsals have undoubtedly had success in their breeding program, one of the most prominent individuals to come from the herd has been the bull Opsal Finley. In October of 1994 at the Agri-Prize sale, Troy, his uncle, and two other associates multiple generation family farm nestled atop the hills of Blue purchased Twin-B-Dairy E-B Felisse-ET as a heifer, along with an Mounds in western Dane County, Opsal’s Ridge consists of embryo package that eventually resulted in her Ethan daughter, a partnership between Lyle and Deanna Opsal and their son Troy. 2011 Midwest National Spring Show Rules RULES FOR 2011 WISCONSIN HOLSTEIN SPONSORED SHOWS ANIMAL HEALTH RULES AND REGULATIONS/DAIRY CATTLE ALL CATTLE - Health requirements for the Midwest National Spring Show are the same as the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture’s requirements for intrastate movement of cattle. Please visit the DATCP website for the most recent rules - http://datcp.wi.gov/uploads/ Animals/pdf/2011_FAIR_RULESfinal2011-01-03.pdf It is highly recommended that all animals shown at the Midwest National Spring Show be vaccinated for BVD according to your Veterinarian’s recommendations. It is also highly recommended that animals be tested for Persistently Infected (PI) BVD animals. This is a once in a lifetime test to insure that the animal is not a PI or shedder animal carrying the BVD Virus. Cattle infected with ringworm, warts, or mange may not be exhibited unless the veterinarian in charge determines the ringworm lesions or warts are inactive and incapable of transmitting the disease. Any cattle found with ringworm, warts, mange or scab shall be removed from the premises of the show. Show management is responsible for maintaining records of persons who have exhibited at the show and the identification of animals shown for 2 years. Acceptable forms of animal identification for breeding animals are (1) an official metal ear tag, (2) a breed registration number, or (3) a breed registration tattoo. Junior Ownership: Junior exhibitors shall be in competition with Open Class Cattle. To compete for junior awards the exhibitor shall not have passed his or her 21st birthday before January 1 of the year of the show. TO COMPETE FOR JUNIOR RIBBONS AND TROPHIES, ALL JUNIOR EXHIBITORS MUST HAVE THE ANIMAL’S OWNERSHIP REGISTERED OR TRANSFERRED BY THE HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION INTO THE INDIVIDUAL NAME OF THE JUNIOR EXHIBITOR ON OR BEFORE JUNE 1. TRANSFER APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE SHOW. Holstein USA’s Junior Leasing rules will be in affect at the Midwest National Spring Show. (For complete Junior Leasing rules, please see the Holstein USA website at www.holsteinusa.com) a. More than one Junior exhibitor may own an animal in partnership if the animal is exhibited by the partnership throughout the entire show season and the names of all Junior partners are listed on the registration certificate. Adult-Junior and family or farm partnerships are not acceptable. b. To be eligible to compete, entries must be shown by the Junior owner in all cases, except by prior written approval. Alternate leadsperson forms must be submitted to the Holstein Youth Program Specialist by 5:00 p.m. the day before the show. If approved, another National Junior Holstein member the same age or younger must show the animal. Adults are not allowed to show, in any case. A leased animal may only be shown by the Junior lessee. c. Managerial projects may be exhibited in Open Class competition. However, they are not eligible for Junior awards. d. To be considered for Junior Awards, exhibitors must identify themselves as a qualified junior member upon check-in to show management. e. It is the responsibility of the Junior owner to prove ownership of animal by hard copy (on paper). f. According to Holstein Association USA’s National Junior Show Ring Policy, exhibitors must be a minimum of nine years old to participate. Bred and Owned: An award will be given in all the female classes for the highest placing animal bred and solely owned by exhibitor. To be considered for Bred & Owned awards, one of the original owners must be listed as one of the current owners. Where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family and where the herd is one unit, all entries may be considered as exhibits of one breeder. Junior Bred and Owned: An award will be presented at the Midwest National Spring Show in all the female classes for the highest placing animal bred and solely owned by a junior exhibitor; the junior exhibitor must be leading the animal during the class as stated in the rules of Junior Ownership. To be eligible for Junior Bred & Owned, the name(s) listed as breeder and owner on the registration certificate must be the same. Adult-Junior partnerships are not acceptable. Family unit or farm partnerships will not qualify for Bred & Owned awards unless all partners are Junior members and listed on the certificate under breeder and owner. Production Awards: In all cow classes, except the Junior & Senior 2 Year Olds, the cow with the highest 305 day milk production record will be recognized. The recognition will be based solely on total milk production without regard to the milking frequency or the testing program. Records should be entered on the entry form and verified at the time of checkin with an official machine printed test sheet or an official pedigree. Best Udder: At the Midwest National Spring Show a Best Udder ribbon will be awarded in all milking cow classes. The Best Udder cow in each of the milking classes will compete to select the Best Udder Cow of the Show. Premier Breeder Award: The breeder winning the most points on four (4) animals, all exhibited in the single classes, shall be designated Premier Breeder. No entry is required, and the winner of this award need not be an exhibitor at the Show, or need not be the current owner of any of the point winning animals. In case of a tie, additional animals will be counted, one at a time, until the tie is broken. Breeder Defined: The owner of the dam at the time of service shall be considered the breeder of the animal. Where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family, and where the herd is one unit, all entries may be considered as exhibits of one breeder. Otherwise, when animals are bred in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique breeder. Premier Exhibitor Award: The exhibitor winning the most points on four (4) animals, all owned and exhibited in the single classes, shall be designated the Premier Exhibitor. All exhibitors will be eligible for this award, and no entry is required. In case of a tie, additional animals will be counted, one at a time, until the tie is broken. Exhibitor Defined: In case a

When animals are owned in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique exhibitor. All animals exhibited must be Holstein Registered or Qualified by the Holstein Association USA, Inc. or registered with the Holstein Association of Canada with 87% or greater purity. 2. Ownership shall be established by the name listed on the registration certificate; or the presentation of the certificate of registration along with a completed transfer and the appropriate fee, which will be retained by a Holstein USA representative and forwarded to the Holstein Association USA, Inc. The Spring Show Committee and the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors reserve the final and absolute right to interpret the rules and regulations of the Shows and will settle and determine all matters, questions, or differences in regard thereto or otherwise arising out of, or in connection with the Shows. In the event a question arises concerning an animal’s age, the Spring Show Committee Chairperson may request that an individual registration certificate be checked at ringside. HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION USA, INC. SHOW RING POLICY Showing cattle is an important part of promoting, merchandising and breeding Registered Holsteins for breeders and Holstein Association USA, Inc. It is also in the best interest of Registered Holstein breeders to maintain integrity and present a positive and progressive image of themselves and their cattle in the showring. Holstein Association USA works cooperatively with the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA), show management, exhibitors and judges to give encouragement, direction and uniformity to the National Holstein Show program I. ETHICS At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness or illegal or non-approved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification caused by unethical fitting. A. The following practices or procedures are considered unacceptable and defined as being fraudulent and/or unethical in the showing of Registered Holstein Cattle: 1. Misrepresenting the age and/or milking status of the animal for the class in which it is shown. 2. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally: a. with an irritant or counter-irritant, b. using a device to artificially create or enhance the udder crease, c. using other substances as detected by testing that cause changes in the udder to artificially improve the conformation. 3. Surgery or unethical insertion of any matter under the skin or into body cavities, performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body, though not to preclude practices required or involved in normal management. 4. Criticizing or interfering with the judge, show management, or other exhibitors while in the showring, or other conduct detrimental to the breed or the show. B. The following practices and procedures are considered to detract from the image of the show ring when carried to excess and will be taken into consideration by the show judge in placing animals within a class: 1. The maximum allowable length of naturally growing hair anywhere on the topline is not to exceed 1½ inches. Exhibitors will be required to comply with this rule before the animal is allowed to enter the ring. 2. Addition of foreign objects, including but not limited to hair or hair substitutes (except for false switches), cloth or fiber, to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal’s body is prohibited. 3. Unsportsmanlike conduct by exhibitors. 4. Improper fitting practices such as overfilling and over-bagging. 5. Externally sealing the teat end with a preparation that does not harm the animal’s skin is permissible. Natural teat placement will be given preference over artificially positioned teats.

C. In keeping with the basic philosophy of Holstein Association USA, ethics are an individual responsibility of the owner of each animal shown. Violations of these policies are subject to the disciplinary provisions of the Association Bylaws. 1. The act of entering an animal in a National Holstein Show is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitor, fitter and/or absolutely responsible person (herinafter referred to as “Exhibitor”) for show management to obtain any specimens of urine, saliva, blood, milk or other substances from the animal to be used in testing. Materials may also be collected by ultrasound and photographic methods and by direct examination of animal. 2. The act of entering an animal in a National Holstein Show is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitor, fitter and/or absolutely responsible person (the “Exhibitor”) to have disciplinary action for violation of this Showring Policy taken by show management, the state in which the show occurs, and/or Holstein Association USA without recourse. WISCONSIN HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION SHOW RING POLICY The following practices or procedures are unacceptable in the showing of Registered dairy cattle: 1. criticizing or interfering with the judge, show management or other exhibitors, or other conduct detrimental to the breed or show; 2. misrepresenting the age or ownership of an animal or the number of calvings and/or stage of lactation; 3. filling an animal’s rumen unnaturally with liquid (tubing); 4. balancing the udder by any means other than by leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters; 5. treating the udder internally with an irritant, counter-irritant, or any other substance to temporarily improve conformation; 6. overfilling or overbagging of udders; 7. treating the udder externally with an irritant, counterirritant, or any other substance to temporarily improve conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, but not shrinking/shortening of teats); 8. Treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally, with an irritant or counter-irritant, or other substance to artificially improve the confirmation (this is to include any external pressure applied to the udder crease to artificially enhance it, i.e. roping). 9. administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) and/or applying any irritant either externally or internally to the perineal (rectum and vagina) area; 10. inserting foreign material/articles under the skin, into the topline or on the feet (Administration of acceptable medications is permitted.); 11. performing surgery of any kind to change the natural contour of appearance of the animal’s body, hide or hair. Not included is the removal of warts, teats and horns, clipping and dressing of hair and trimming of hooves; 12. draining fluid from hocks unless authorized by a veterinarian at the show. 13. Excessive manipulation of hair and/or the use of any hair not naturally attached to the animal or the use of any substance or material which is intended to resemble or imitate hair. MONITORING PROCEDURES The Ethics Committee, as defined below, shall have the authority to inspect all animals to determine if violations of Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy have occurred. To help in this regard, the Ethics Committee has the authority to perform and review results of the following: 1. An ultrasound examination of the udder of selected animals immediately upon completion of respective milking class competition. It shall be the exhibitor’s responsibility to deliver selected cow to the designated testing area. Within a reasonable time following said testing, the ultrasound official shall submit his/her report to the WI Holstein Association. If an animal fails to show up for ultrasounding with a full udder at the Midwest National Spring Show, show placings will be revoked and reported to Holstein USA and Holstein World. 2. a milk out of any individual cow and/or 3. the collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids and/or 4. the use of any other technology that may be useful in determining if a violation in any animal based on placement, random selection, or suspect characteristics. 5. The Ethics Committee or Show Chairman may, at any time, require the delivery to them of any hair samples or hypodermic syringe, needle, or other device, swabs, cloths, or other material, or samples or any medicine, preparation, or substance, whether in liquid or other form, in the possession or control of exhibitor, fitters, agents or person acting on behalf of the exhibitor for laboratory analysis. ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES 1. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors shall appoint an Ethics Committee to monitor violations at all state sponsored shows. The Ethics Committee shall consist of 2 WHA Board members and one non-board member; this committee will be anonymous. 2. Complaints of alleged violations must be presented to the Show Chairman or a member of the show management of the respective show immediately, except ultrasound results as noted above. 3. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman that the showing of that animal may result in a violation of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 4. All complaints of alleged violations (as is designated in Enforcement Procedure point #2) received by the Show Chairman or a member of the show management must be presented to the Wisconsin Holstein Association for review by the Ethics Committee within

five (5) days of receiving notice of alleged violations, with the Ethics Committee to make a decision on the violations within ten (10) days of receiving such notice. 5. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Director of Operations will notify the accused exhibitor immediately of the Ethics Committee decision that a violation has occurred and all the supportive evidence will be shared with the exhibitor. Within thirty (30) days Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Committee shall review the findings from the Ethics Committee and make a recommendation to the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors of the disciplinary action. The exhibitor will be able to participate in the Show Committee meeting. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors shall meet on the same day to review the findings from the Ethics Committee, recommendations from the Show Committee and hear any presentation the exhibitor wishes to present. 6. The accused exhibitor must notify Wisconsin Holstein Association within seven (7) days of receiving the violation notice of their intent to participate in the Show Committee meeting and/or the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors meeting, which is set for reviewing the evidence of the alleged violation(s) and the disciplinary action to be taken. 7. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy, the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors, at its discretion may pass onto the violator(s) its costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of violation(s). Cost associated with the review and/or appeals process must be paid in full; if this assessment is not paid in full the violator(s) will not be in “good standing” with the Wisconsin Holstein Association and therefore be denied any and all membership benefits of the association (voting, showing, etc.). 8. Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors &/or the Show Committee may consider previous violations by an exhibitor in their decision of disciplinary action. (see*) 9. An animal found in violation of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies or awards or placing(s). 10. During this entire process the Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board, the Ethics Committee, the Show Committee, its staff and members will not be obligated to maintain confidentiality. The following rules shall apply to all members: 1. Use or possession of any alcoholic beverage or controlled substances strictly prohibited. 2. The Junior Holstein Association is open to membership for those persons under the age of 21 as of January 1st of the membership year. The purpose of this organization is to encourage youthful interest in the promotion of the Registered Holstein industry. To be eligible for membership, all juniors must sign this agreement and agree to abide by the rules hereinafter set forth. Failure to honor any of these rules will subject the junior member to immediate revocation of membership status, including the opportunity of participation in WI Holstein Association sponsored activities and events.

From your President Jim Rickert Congratulations to Bill Brey of Door County who was the winner in the January Holstein Trivia Contest. The question was: In the 120 year history of the Wisconsin Holstein Association, there have been three times that a father and a son have each been WHA Presidents. Who are the father and son combinations? The correct answer was Elroy and Roger Borgwardt, Elroy and Bill Borgwardt and Don and Jim Rickert. Keep reading to find this month’s trivia question. Congratulations to all of the award winners at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention held recently in Stevens Point. Nearly 500 people attended the convention and it was uplifting to see the interest and excitement of our next generation of Holstein members. Thanks to the Wood County hosts, along with Chris, Laura, Ashley and Sharon from the state office for organizing an outstanding event. Also, hats off to all of our volunteers from throughout the state; for making the convention a tremendous success. I addressed the attendees during the Princess Luncheon. One point I stressed was that everyone should have a passion for something. It is also important to set attainable goals in your life. Write down your goals and share them with people. This can be a real driving force for you to someday attain these goals. I believe that this is important for the Juniors and for people of all ages. I invite everyone to attend this year’s adult Holstein convention being held February 18-19 in Beaver Dam. Our Dodge County hosts have worked hard to plan an enjoyable convention including very affordable meal prices. The Wisconsin Holstein Futurity will be discussed during the business meeting on Saturday. Please attend if you want to be part of the discussion to increase participation and interest in the futurity for years to come. Four directors will be elected, and we would like to see most of the counties represented to cast their ballot. This month’s question is: Which AI company is the regular advertiser on the back cover of each Wisconsin Holstein News? Please send the correct answer by email to jkrickert@centurytel.net. WHA Board of Directors Elections At the 2011 WHA Convention, elections will be held for four board of director positions. Lynn Harbaugh, Jim Rickert and Bob Traynor have fulfilled their terms on the board. Kelli Cull is eligible for one more three-year term. Below is one additional candidate that has declared their candidacy for the WHA Board. Information on other candidates was printed in the January issue. Anyone wishing to run for the WHA Board can be nominated from the floor at the annual meeting on February 19.

Tim Keller, Mount Horeb I am Tim Keller of Mount Horeb, WI. My wife Sandy, our son Andrew and daughter Kimberly farm in partnership with my brother Mark Keller. We operate our business under Kellercrest Registered Holsteins, Inc. Kellercrest has 300 Registered Holstein cows with a grand total of 600 animals including cows, heifers, calves and bulls. We currently have a 29,150 pound herd average and a 106.1 BAA. We do some showing of cattle but our main emphasis is breeding a combination of high type and production which has led to an extensive amount of embryo transfer work and merchandising of genetics, exporting embryos and bulls to AI. Currently we are working with about 25 cows and heifers for sons for AI or embryo work. In 2008, we were blessed to receive the National Dairy Shrine’s Progressive Dairy Producer Award for herds over 300 Cows. We have received both the Progressive Breeder Registry Award nine times and the Progressive Genetics Award 11 times. I am currently the Vice-President of our Dane County Holstein Board and was part of the planning committee for the 2010 Wisconsin Holstein Convention. Kellercrest was one of two herds visited during the 2010 State Holstein Convention farm tours. Also served on the Green County DHIA Board for 7 years. I would find it a great honor to serve on the WHA Board of Directors. Thank You.

After hosting a very successful Adult Convention in February, we thanked our county for all of their organizing and participation to our members at our annual meeting on March 21 at the Scatz Restaurant in Middleton. There, we gave away door prizes and followed with a fun basket auction for our members. Moving right into organizing as host of the District 6 Show, we coordinated 250 entries, for a very successful show. We are scheduling the Dane County Holstein Breeders annual banquet again, exact date is still pending but most likely March 20, where we recognize Distinguished Breeders in our County as well as our Bell Award who is the most outgoing member in our county for the year. We also will be awarding scholarships to our older youth, and recognizing outstanding Jr. Holstein work. The Juniors just returned from a very successful Junior Convention hosted by Wood County in Stevens Point. They look forward to another successful year in 2011. They enjoy their annual fundraiser selling cheese curds and cream puffs at the Dane County Fair and use the money to help fund their expenses for the Convention each year.

Green county’s 2010 activities started with the annual Green|Rock Dual County Sale held on March 20 at the WFA Sale Facility in Brooklyn. Topping the sale was Jeffrey-Way Toffee-ET, consigned by Jeffrey & Kate Hendrickson of Jeffrey-Way Holsteins and purchased by Bob Cramer, Jr. The 2010 sale averaged $1,927 on 55 live lots. The Green County Holstein Breeders held their annual meeting and awards banquet on March 27, 2010. County herd awards for production, Progressive Breeder Registry, Progressive Genetic Herd and Top 200 BAA were presented, in addition to recognizing Dam of Merit and Gold Medal Dam recipients. The top honorees of the evening were bestowed to the Younger Holstein Breeders, John & Deb Dieckhoff, and Senior Holstein Breeder, Larry Hendrickson. Holstein activities continued into the summer and falls with shows and activities. Culminating the end of summer was the annual county picnic, hosted by Hi-Line-Haven on September 12, 2010. The Green County Junior Holstein Association currently consists of 57 members. We are very active in all aspects of the Registered Holstein and dairy industries. Some of our activities throughout the year include the following. On even numbered years in March, we host the lunch stand at the Annual Green|Rock Sale. In April or May, we host a fitting and showmanship clinic for anyone showing dairy. It’s geared toward 34–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/February, 2011

beginning showmen and they get hands-on practice. We have a fitting demonstration, a showmanship clinic and also talk about herdsmanship, proper show ring behavior and ethics. Youth from Green County and neighboring counties are invited to attend. This summer, we’re also hoping to set up a Dairy Mentor program in which our Junior Holstein members will get paired up with a beginning Dairy youth. They will work with them, on-on-one on the basics of showing, how to wash their animals, showmanship, etc. In June, many of our members participate in Dairy promotions. A First Baby of June gift basket is delivered to the first baby born in Green County during June Dairy month. Our members go into the elementary school classrooms and give talks on different aspects of the dairy industry and dairy products. The activities range from making butter and smearing it on graham crackers to making ice cream to dairy quiz bowl games. Some members have also worked with the local radio station and create radio spots that run throughout the month promoting the dairy industry. Also on even numbered years, we run a lunch stand at the Monroe Cheese Days festival in September. We sell grilled cheese sandwiches, milk and ice cream, but we are most famous for the homemade pies. This year, we made and sold just about 300 pies in three days. Come and have lunch with us the 3rd weekend of September, 2012!

FROM THE FIELD By Chris Lyons, Holstein USA Regional Field Rep I am writing this column as the new Regional Field Representative for Holstein Association USA, covering Eastern and Southeast Wisconsin. First, I would like to thank Mike Snyder for his years of service to you, the members, and the Association itself. I am sure you will still see Mike around at Holstein-related functions, so please thank him in person when you see him. Now, on to my introduction; I have called Fort Atkinson, Wis., home for 20 years, along with my wife Leslie and our two children, Cassidy, a freshman at UW-Madison, and Brady, a sophomore at Fort Atkinson High School. I grew up on a dairy farm in Illinois on which we were very active in the Holstein Association. I graduated from Western Illinois University and then started my career in the dairy industry. I worked previously in the AI industry for 20+ years. I spent 15 years with Alta Genetics working in Southeast Wisconsin and the last four years were spent with CRI working Southeast Wisconsin and Northern Illinois for them. So, you can tell I have spent my life in the dairy industry and gone through all the ups and downs over the past years, which has given me a true respect for all dairymen and their families. I have been working for Holstein USA since mid-September and have met many of you already, and have been able to re-acquaint myself to others in a new role. If I have not been by yet I will be, and look forward to discussing the programs that Holstein USA has available for you, such as Holstein Tag ID, the EASY software program, and the Holstein COMPLETE program, which brings everything we have to offer in one neat package. It’s that time of year again; yes, I’m talking about Holstein Association USA’s Regional Meetings. The regional meetings are an opportunity for members to provide input into the activity of the Association. This year, regional meetings will be held in conjunction with both the Wisconsin and Iowa State Conventions. At the meeting, you’ll learn updates on current activities and policies as well as last year’s financial report. This will also be an opportunity to meet and converse with National staff and your National board members. There will also be time to ask questions and make suggestions. Whether you’re going to Beaver Dam on February 18 or Dubuque on February 25, we want to know what is on your mind. See you there! The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course invites prospective students and their parents to campus on February 16 or 17, 2011, to preview what the program has to offer. High school juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend. The UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences offers the one- or two-year short course program to high school graduates interested in farming or one of Wisconsin’s many other agricultural industries. The program runs from November to April and has an average enrollment of 135 students. The program’s instructional goals emphasize a combination of cutting edge knowledge and hands-on experience, taught by faculty and staff, many of whom also teach in the four-year undergraduate program. Over 50 courses are offered annually in the areas of soils, crops, dairy, meat animals, general livestock, landscaping, agricultural engineering and agricultural economics. Students may earn a one-year or two-year certificate requiring 20 or 40 credits, respectively, or they may pursue a specialty certificate in one of seven areas: Crop and Soil Management, Dairy Farm Management, Farm Mechanics, Farm Service and Supply, Landscape Industry, Meat Animals, or Pasture-Based Dairy and Livestock. Up to 15 credits can be transferred to the College’s four-year degree program. The preview days will give visitors a chance to tour the campus and attend classes in advanced reproduction, plant diseases, managing a pasture-based dairy business, beef cattle management & production and soil & crop nutrient resource management. Prospective students can talk to short course staff, current students, house fellows and alumni. They can also tour the short course dormitories and learn about the many scholarship opportunities available and the types of careers that short course can lead to. “Preview Days allow potential students to get a feel for the experience they can expect if they attend Short Course,” says Ted Halbach, short course director. “There’s no better way to find out for yourself than by visiting campus.” There is no cost for the Preview Days, but pre-registration by February 9, 2011 is strongly recommended. National Dairy Shrine Award Applications due March 15 Denmark, Wis.: National Dairy Shrine is again seeking nominations for its most prestigious awards: Guest of Honor, Pioneer, Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder, Progressive Dairy Producer, and Graduate Production Award. The Guest of Honor is given to a contemporary dairy leader for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the dairy industry. It has been awarded every year since 1949 when Dean H. Kildee was named the first Guest of Honor. Each year, three to four living or deceased Pioneers of the dairy industry are honored by National Dairy Shrine for their service and leadership in the dairy industry. Meanwhile, the Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder is an award which recognizes active, progressive dairy producers who, through their expertise in managing a dairy breeding herd based upon sound genetics and business principles, serve as a model of success for fellow breeders throughout the country. All these award winners’ accomplishments are on permanent display in the Dairy Hall of Fame at the National Dairy Shrine Museum in Fort Atkinson, Wis. One of National Dairy Shrine’s newer awards, the Progressive Dairy Producer Award, is given to producers ages 21 to 45 who have introduced and applied effective management and business practices that help achieve more profitable dairy businesses. Two $2,000 awards for education and travel are given annually, one for herd sizes with 300 milk cows or less and a second for herds with over 300 milk cows. The Graduate Dairy Production Award recognizes and assists qualified two-year and four-year agricultural college graduates efforts to pursue a career in commercial dairy farming and to gain ownership of dairy cattle with the intent of growing their dairy herd. The applicant must be employed in a herd management role on a commercial dairy when completing the award application. The winner will receive a $2,500 award from National Dairy Shrine. Nominations or applications must be submitted on official forms by March 15, 2011. Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I chose to attend UW-Madison because I wanted to major in Dairy Science and I wanted to meet new people. I decided I lived too close to the University of Minnesota campus, but still wanted a larger campus since I went to a large high school. Madison seemed to fit all my needs. What has been your most memorable college experience? It is hard to pick one experience so I am going to pick two. My first is going to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada my freshman year. It was a great trip and I was able to meet and become friends with some upperclassmen on the trip. My second is an experience as a proud Badger in the stands and later on the field at the Ohio State football game when the Badgers won earlier this season. What has been your favorite course? The favorite course I have taken was Ag and Applied Economics 419, Agricultural Finance. Bruce Jones did a great job at teaching many practical applications of finance whether you are going back to the family farm, looking to start your own small business, or just how to manage your personal finances. What are your future career goals? I am looking forward to starting my career with Dow AgroSciences as an Account Representative this June. From there, I am excited to grow and advance in the agriculture industry.

Welcome New Junior Activities Committee Members Katie Wendorf - SW District JAC Hi! I’m Katie Wendorf of Vernon County and I am excited to serve as the new SW JAC representative. I am currently a freshman at Harvard University studying mathematics and pre-med. I am the 18-year-old daughter of Kent and Anna Wendorf of Viroqua. I’m looking forward meeting many members over the next two years!

Nate Huser - NW District JAC Hey! I am Nathan Huser, your new NW district JAC! I am excited to spend the next two years learning from other members and getting to know all of you. I am the 18-year-old son of Dave and Adele Huser. I live on a 240-acre dairy farm, Honeyview Century Farm, in rural Vesper. We have a heifer raising operation and currently house nearly 150 dairy heifers. I attend Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School where I am a senior. I plan to attend UW-River Falls for Agricultural Engineering with intentions of assisting on the family farm or possibly managing a larger dairy. I hope to help introduce new ideas into our Association and get to know as many of our members as I can. Wish me luck, and I look forward to spending the next two years as a JAC member!

Cara Biely - NE District JAC Hello Holstein enthusiasts! I am Cara Biely, and am representing your NE district as a JAC. I live in Reedsville in Manitowoc County. I am the daughter of Mark and Lois, and my siblings are Corey and Curt. I am a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Dairy Science. I am very excited to see many of you at Holstein events coming up! Brett Hildebrandt - SE District JAC Hello fellow Junior Holstein youth! My name is Brett Hildebrandt, and I am your new SE district JAC. I live in Dodge County on a 70-cow Registered Holstein farm, where we also run 950 acres of cropland. My parents are Roger and Faye Hildebrandt, and I have one older brother, Ty. I am a first year student at UW-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course, where I am pursuing a certificate in Dairy Herd Management. I eventually hope to return home to our family farm and be a co-owner. I am very excited to be a JAC member and look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone from around the state!

It’s been a cold, snowy winter so far but by the look of our calendar of events, things will be heating up in the next few weeks. There are plenty of sales and events for you to attend and spend time with other Holstein enthusiasts. The sale season starts off with a bang on February 18 with the Wisconsin Convention Futures Sale in Beaver Dam. This sale is put on by the WHA Young Adult Committee and proceeds from the sale help fund the group’s educational activities and scholarships. You can learn more about many of the great consignments for this year’s sale in this issue and we hope you’ll join us at the Wisconsin Holstein Convention on February 18 & 19. Dates have been set for the WHA spring Barn Meetings. Focus for this year’s meetings is how to optimize reproduction technologies for high value Registered Holsteins. Thank you to the four farms that have agreed to host a barn meeting. More information will be printed in the March issue. Our next issue will be another joint Midwest Holsteins issue. If you would like to get your advertising message out to over 5,000 readers in the upper Midwest, give me a call by February 4. This is a great opportunity to get the word out about any spring sale consignments you have. Included in this issue is the entry form and rules for the Midwest National Spring Show on April 16. Please take a moment to review the rules for this show. Also, any junior member planning to show at the Spring Show will have to sign the junior member behavior agreement on the back side of the form. Thank you to all who submitted photos for our Cover Contest. We had many, many great photos this year and all will be kept on file for possible use in the future.
