Otis LeRoy Gilbertson, age 88 of Hollandale died on Monday evening, October 27, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. He was born on January 8, 1926 on the family farm in rural Hollandale to Martin and Nellie (Vamstad) Gilbertson. He grew up in rural Hollandale where he worked with his family on the family farm and attended Hollandale grade and high school where he graduated from in 1943. He served in World War II after he enlisted in the United States Navy, and served in the South Pacific in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima on the USS Sarpedon. After being discharged from service, Otis married Dorothy Isabelle Anderson on July 8, 1947. He worked for Severson Hardware in Hollandale where they lived in the apartment above the store and in 1949 he and Dorothy began farming together on their farm on the edge of Hollandale. In 1988, Otis and Dorothy built their retirement home overlooking the farm. From your President Chris McCullough Dear Wisconsin Holstein members, I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays with your friends and family. As winter seems to certainly be in full swing again it brings us closer to our adult convention witch will be in River Falls this year at the Best Western Plus. Bob Trayner, this year’s chairman, has assured me that they have a fun filled weekend planned for us and knowing Bob I am sure we will all have plenty of laughs. Ice Fishing, Holstein USA Meeting, committee meetings, young producers roundtable and YAC Futures Sale will all take place on Friday. Saturday will include the Early Bird session, Wisconsin Holstein annual meeting, farm tours, Wine and Paint (spouses outing), and the banquet will all be on Saturday. If you have never been to an adult convention I highly encourage you to do so, it is sure to be a great time. At our annual meeting we will have two current board members ineligible for re-election. Todd Stanek and Matt Lippert are going off the board and we would like to thank them for all their service. This also brings the opportunity to bring in two new board members as well. Kevin Jorgensen and Bill Calvert have completed their first term and are both seeking re-election. In this issue you will see the candidates that have already stepped forward. If you would like to run as well, there is still time. Please contact either myself or the office if you are interested. I know it has been a great experience for me as well as our other fellow board members. Hope to see you all in River Falls! Chris McCullough
Tribute to Marlowe E. Nelson by Bill Eustice, Regancrest/Exodus Holsteins Marlowe E. Nelson was my 1957 Wisconsin State 4-H Judging team coach. He invited me to stay in his and late first wife Phyllis’s home while training for the National 4-H Contest in Waterloo, IA. They treated me like a family member - taking me to elite Wisconsin herds and non-stop talking on type evaluation, cow families and sire selection. Our family had grades and Marlowe found us 10 registered cows at $1000 each. Our parents, Sherman and Rose Eustice, didn’t have money to buy them; Marlowe said he would pay half and become our partner. Later our parents had money to buy Marlowe’s half - he sold at no profit! Marlowe found a special cow for us (cost $1300) and she was 1963 Grand Champion at Wisconsin State Fair Junior Show (world’s largest dairy cattle show). I then became “hooked” on elite type. Marlowe nominated our dad, Sherman, for Wisconsin Holstein director - later becoming state President. In 1959 Marlower arranged for me to work with his cousin’s show herd (Gene & Pete Nelson, Grayview). It was a thrill to work with Skyanne, Crissy, Crisscross, Pet Crystal and Ramona Smokey (owned with Elmwood). In the 1960s Marlowe made me summer intern at Tri-State Breeders when he was sire procurement director. I remember his selection of Lifeof-Riley Marquis King *RC, saying “my competitors will call me crazy selecting a Marquis x Grayview Skyliner x Citation R (ABC Refelection Soverign-2X)”. History reveals August (EX-96) by “Riley” and Blackrose (EX-96) from a “Riley” daughter resulted from Marlowe’s wisdom. August, with Penstate Marksman Reflection in her maternal line has ABC - 3X! Maternal line sires of Dellia (EX-95) of my housing partner, Regancrest, were Marlowe selected sires. In 1977 Marlowe introduced me to Francios Dekker of the Netherlands, buying bulls for Europe. For the next seven years I was an agent west of the Mississippi resulting in 400+ sires exported to Europe. In 1979 Marlowe invited me on a eight day Japan trip to both main islands. We stayed with Shuzeh Fukuya’s family who he met in service in Hokkaido during the Korean Conflict. We were treated like royalty Marlowe was decorated with the Grand Order of the Sun on May 4, 2000 by the Japanese Government for his contribution to improved dairy genetics and management. Following our trip, Marlowe arranged for a Japanese trainee to work with Exodus Holsteins. Marlowe Nelson was recognized at World Dairy Expo was attended by many from numerous countries. Shuzoh Fukuya was one of the featured speakers. Marlowe’s contributions to our family and many other dairy people was enormous!

Hello Fellow Holstein Enthusiasts! Dreams truly do come true. My year as the Wisconsin Holstein Princess has been one of the most rewarding and memorable times of my life. As I reflect on this past year, I cannot put into words the amount of appreciation and gratitude I have for those who have helped me along the way to get to this opportunity. I know I would not be where I am today, if it was not for the people who have influenced and encouraged me throughout my young life. I have been involved in numerous organizations; however the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association has positively impacted my life more than any other. The understanding of hard work, dedication, and the members themselves is what has made me who I am today. The Wisconsin Holstein Association has, and continues to bless me with lifelong friendships, memories and mentors. Since being crowned as Princess, one of my goals from the beginning was to be a positive role model to the youth of this organization and I truly hope that I have upheld that standard throughout my reign. As this year comes to a close, I have many people I would like to say “thank you” to. I would like to first thank Kristen, for being by my side throughout this past year. I’m glad to call you a friend, and happy we were able to share this journey together. Next, I would like to say “thank you” to Larry Nelson and the rest of the WHA staff for all of your hard work and efforts to make this tremendous organization run smoothly. Especially to the boss man, Larry for always being a text or phone call away, even if it was about fashion. Also, thank you to the princess mentors for your guidance throughout the year; including Barb Natske, Courtney Booth, Laura Herschleb, Peggy Sue Coffeen, Lisa Coyne and Chrissy Meyer. On a personal note, I would like to thank my two mentors and biggest supporters, my parents. These two have made me into the woman I am today, and am truly blessed to have them by my side. Also, I would like to thank God for he has and continues to bless me every day of my life. Lastly, to the members of the Wisconsin Holstein Association it has been a true honor and privilege to serve as the 2014 Wisconsin Holstein Princess. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me the opportunity to serve as an ambassador for the organization that I truly do love. Kayla Krueger

Hello Friends, Firstly, I would like to congratulate all juniors on having an outstanding Convention. Also, a huge thank you to the Dodge County Juniors for hosting a great event. For me, Convention has been and always will be an event I look forward to in my junior career. It’s an amazing time to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and share our love of the Holstein cow. I commend you all for attending, participating, and excelling in what you do. If you did not have the chance to attend this year, make sure you add it to your “to do” list for the future! As mine and Kayla’s year has come to an end, we could not be more excited to hand our crowns down to two very deserving young ladies. This year has been full of awesome experiences that I will surely never forget. From experiencing my first Cow Camp, to throwing out the first pitch at a baseball game, to handing out awards on the colored shavings, this year has been nothing short of amazing! Of course this year would not have been possible without the endless support I received from this industry, my friends, and my family. To the Wisconsin Holstein Association adults and juniors, thank you for supporting Kayla and I at every event and for being such a tremendous membership who we are so honored to have been able to represent. Kayla, thank you for being the best partner I could have ever asked for in this crazy adventure. I will never forget our long car rides together or conversations ring side. To my friends, thank you for understanding my crazy schedule at shows and being there for me whenever I needed anything. To my sisters, Jenna and Nicole, thank you for being the best partners of Rock-Edge Holsteins I could ever ask for. You truly picked up every bit of my slack this summer and I could not be more grateful. To my mom, thank you for going out of your way to be my biggest supporter and for going “dress shopping” with me more than either of us would have ever imagined. My last thank you goes to the person who without him, I would not have the passion for the dairy industry that I do. Thank you Dad for instilling in me your passion for the Holstein cow and for being my guardian angel riding shotgun this summer as I drove from event to event in your old white truck. It has been an honor to serve as your 2014 WI Holstein Princess Attendant. It seems like just yesterday Kayla and I were crowned. To the 2015 Royalty, take every moment in; the year truly flies by! ’Til I see you again, Kristen Broege
Attention Wisconsin Holstein Members who plan to show this year -

BREEDER PROFILES
Catching up with District 1 Holstein Breeders by Ashley Yager As we ring in 2015 and celebrate 125 years of Wisconsin Holstein, the WHA office editorial staff thought it was time to shake things up. Rather than feature one farm each month, we’re going to feature several - profiling new herds as well as catching up with some that we’ve profiled before. On a brisk December day, I had the opportunity to make the trek north and check out a few herds in the Pierce/Pepin area. Seeing good cows and talking breeding philosophies never gets old, and neither does walking into a great herd of cows for the first time. The three farms I was able to tour in December were a prime example of a few ‘hidden gems’ - producers that are doing an awesome job but also show their passion for good cows through the meticulous care they take of their facilities and breeding programs.
Patnode-Lane Holsteins Weston & Jenni Patnode Family eston Patnode and his family, like most Registered Holstein breeders, truly enjoy milking good cows. He and his wife, Jenni, purchased the farm from Weston’s parents (Wayne and Anita) eight years ago following his completion of UW-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course. Weston is the fourth generation on the farm, founded by his great-grandpa in 1948 just outside of Arkansaw, Wis. The farm consists of 400 acres, with 200 tillable. The Patnodes have 50 milking cows, with an additional 70 head of youngstock. Weston and Jenni have two sons, Warner (6) and Brayden (2). They milk twice a day and run a rolling herd average at 22,500 pounds of milk. There are currently 12 EX or VG cows in the barn. Weston grew up an active participant in 4-H and FFA, including judging at the National FFA contest. Jenni works off the farm at Schaefer Oil, but helps at home when she can. While the farm has been home to registered animals since 1990, the last few years have provided an opportunity for Weston to invest in some key cow families and take his marketing program to the next level. In 2014, Weston made a few high-profile purchases that have helped increase the visibility of his herd while allowing him to pursue high indexing cows and heifers. This has increased contract interest from bull studs, while allowing Weston the chance to start marketing his genetics. At the 2014 WI Convention Futures Sale, Weston purchased Matcrest Oak Cancun, an October 2013 AltaOak heifer with +2341
W
GTPI from a GP-83 OStyle then EX-90 Larcrest Constance. There are seven pregnancies from Cancun, by sires AltaSpring, Supershot and Delta. Weston made two purchases at the Minnesota Spring Sale, including Larcrest Cleveland, GP-83, and Gil-Gar Uno Wendi, born October 2013. Cleveland is a Freddie x VG-86 Larcrest ChenileET x EX-90 Larcrest Outside Champagne that stems from the same maternal line as Cancun from Larcrest Holsteins. The Patnodes have pregnancies to First Class and Yoder from Cleveland. Wendi is an Uno x VG-85 Butz-Butler Snowman WhitneyET x GP-83 Gil-Gar Jeeves Winnie that is just getting set up for her first flushes. In addition to these purchases, Weston is excited to work with his homebred family and foundation dam Patnode-Lane MOM Mindy, GP-83. With 11 total daughters (seven milking), her impact in the herd is already outstanding, with consistent, stylish daughters with high numbers. Milking daughters are sired by Epic (4) and Hill (3), and there are additional heifers on the ground by Ladd-P, AltaOak, and Archive-Red. Mindy has been confirmed pregnant to Josuper for 2015. There is a fancy Large daughter, just fresh, from Mindy’s GP-83 sister, in addition to calves by Supersire and Shakespeare from Mindy’s VG-88 sister. As the Patnodes continue to build their genetic profile, they will continue incorporating some genomic sires while sticking with some proven bulls as well. Calves on the ground include sires Racer, Commander, Kingboy, Bombero, Monterey, and Jackman, with favorites coming from Supersire, Altaoak, Liquid Gold and Shakespeare. With the interest in contracting his up-and-comers and four bulls already sent to stud, Weston works closely with his AI reps and keeps atop the lists each sire summary to stay ahead of the genetic trends. The Patnode-Lane herd also has a lot of Durham influence, as well as BW Marshall, Juror sons and O-Man sons, particularly ManO-Man and Iota. With a solid foundation and a knowledgeable captain at the helm, the Patnodes are primed for success. Weston would like to eventually get to 70 or 80 cows and maybe have a small freestall barn, but still keep numbers low enough for the family to manage. For Weston, it’s about the cows and continuing to try and find the ‘right’ ones to buy and develop.
Afdahl Holsteins – The Brad Afdahl Family n this day and age, many Holstein breeders have the opportunity to inherit a family farm and herd of cows to pursue their dream of dairying. Some, however, have to start from scratch, and Brad Afdahl is a prime example of how the will to work and attention to detail can pave a successful path in the Registered Holstein business. He knew he wanted to farm at a young age - dreaming about milking
I Larcrest Cleveland GP-83 10–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/January 2015
cows and driving tractors – so that’s precisely what he’s doing now that he’s ‘grown up.’ When the Wisconsin Holstein News last featured Brad and his wife Kristin in 2000, they were living in New Richmond on a 35-acre farm. Since then, they relocated to a spot with more acreage outside of Arkansaw, Wis., and have completely renovated the scene to a truly picturesque version of a western Wisconsin dairy farm. In 2003 the Afdahls made the move to their current location, which consists of 170 total acres and a 55-cow tie-stall barn that was built new in 2010 after the original barn was falling apart. In fact, other than a pair of machine sheds, the farm is 100% different than what it was in 2003. Brad and Kristin have two boys, Bo (10) and Ian (7). Brad’s theory for breeding cows revolves around ‘trouble-free perfection,’ and it shows most on his DHIA sheet with an average somatic cell count of 45,000 and a no-tolerance policy for mastitis. He culls aggressively, and does not use sexed semen or rBST. The Afdahl herd has also been closed for ten years, with no embryo transfer work. Even with a 35% heifer rate, Brad’s strict and successful management protocol has produced a 100% homebred and commercial herd of cows that work as good as they look. In addition, he focuses on breeding cattle for conformation and type, for profitable cows. Brad uses 95% proven sires, with a few genomic bulls sprinkled in the mix for the outcross factor. Right now, he is using Gold Chip, Dempsey, Pirate, and Mogul on his cows. The herd’s BAA is 107.5%. Since the last time Afdahl Holsteins was featured, Brad bred and developed a world record contender for milk. Afdahl Rudolph Taegan, EX-90, produced in 3x and 365 days 67,882 pounds milk with 1988 pounds fat and 1804 pounds protein. She accomplished this after being dry for a full year and calving at five years and two months of age. She was only 350 pounds shy of the record at the time. Another cow that is still a headliner in the bloodlines at Afdahls is Dalse Highlight Kathy, EX-94. Kathy was purchased from Brad’s cousin’s dispersal, and her daughter, Dalse Bomaz 1551, went to Bomaz farms as a young cow to become a founding mother for many bulls in AI today. Brad also has a VG-87 Trump daughter that is on the locator list and is making a 40,000 pound record this year on 2x milking. In addition, an early 2000s purchase of a member of the Leadman Karen family from Indianhead has provided some big-bodied, framey bovines that Brad really likes. The Afdahls were milking 3x/day until the spring of 2013, and are still maintaining a rolling herd average over 29,000 pounds milk with a 3.95% fat and 3.3% protein test. Brad commented that they’ve been able to maintain somatic cell at a low level, and have lost some milk in two-year-old lactations, but the labor needs fit their goals of the operation more appropriately. Brad looks forward to continuing the development of his herd so that he can increase the opportunity to market in the future.
R-Green Acres – The Raethke Family he crew at R-Green-Acres has been very busy since their last appearance in the Wisconsin Holstein News, just a few years ago. Family cooperation remains a large part of this dairy, owned and operated by Myrna Raethke with her three sons, Jeff, Jon and Chuck. The farm is home to just over 200 milk cows with an additional 200
T
head of youngstock and 50 bulls, which are sold both as breeding bulls and marketed to AI companies. The Raethkes run a rolling herd average at 25,600 pounds milk, with 970 pounds fat and 770 pounds protein. In the last few years, the family has also built two new heifer sheds – one houses young calves through age five and six months, and the other for heifers six months up to calving age. The genetic focus at R-Green Acres in recent years has shifted toward the use of genomics and polled sires, as they currently have nearly 50 polled females. The Raethkes have ten heifers by Ladd-P, with most of them polled. They have also used Laddman-P, AtlantaP, Ocean-PP, Zumba-P, and OHare-P. The Raethke’s homebred “T” family produced Pride Freddie Tata 905-ET, VG-85 and +2387 GTPI, number 70 on the top 100 female list for December 2014. Tata is a Freddie from VG-86 Shottle Tootles x EX-90 Ramos Toward x VG-87 Addison. She has three sons in AI – Tallyho, Tampa and Twister. Another female the Raethkes are working with from this line is Pride Lboy Today 829-P-ET, VG-87. She produced two polled and *RC Uno daughters, of which one was kept and the other sold to Seagull-Bay, along with a Kingboy bull and polled calves by Jaycee, Sudan and OHare-P.
Pride Lboy Today 829-P-ET VG-87 Many of the Raethke’s other high-profile cows and heifers, both genomic and polled, stem from the Honeycrest Patron Tanya maternal line. Pride Bookem Tussle 997-ET, GP-83 and +2418 GTPI, was 50th on the top 100 list in December. Tussle has two AltaOak sons in AI – one at Select Sires (Tux) and one at Accelerated (Tut). A maternal sister to Tussle, Pride Sham Toddler 1023-ET, GP-82, has Dorcy yearlings that are being flushed. Toddler is a Shamrock x Shottle x Laudan x Patron Tanya. Tussle and Toddler’s dam is MsPride Shotle Ticker594-ET, VG-86. Finally, MS Pride Plnt Tasket 788-ET, VG-85, is also a maternal sister from Shotle Ticker by Planet. Tasket was sold as a heifer to Genex, but the Raethkes continue to use her sons in their breeding program. The consistency in the Raethke’s herd is outstanding when walking through the pens. They are most fond of their two-year-old cows by Mogul and Hero, as well as Robust and Bookem. Chuck also used a lot of Iota, Gabor and Freddie, as they fit the high type, high TPI sire qualifications the Raethkes select for. Sires currently being used, in addition to the polled sires listed previously, include Jet Air, Jaycee, Troy, Sudan, Gabor, Remark and Tecumseh, a polled Eliminator son from Tata. R Green Acres has been recognized as a Progressive Genetics herd for over 20 years, and their latest classification yielded two new EX and 15 new VG cows. The Raethke family hopes to continue building on an already solid foundation of genetics by offering diversification through the use of polled sires. With a solid, innovative breeding philosophy, R Green Acres is set to take on the future with success.

WHA Board of Directors Elections
At the 2015 Wisconsin Holstein Convention, elections will be held for four board of director positions. Bill Calvert and Kevin Jorgensen are eligible for one more three-year term. If you are interested in running and would like to run a bio in the February issue, please contact the Wisconsin Holstein News by January 15.
Bill Calvert, Cuba City My name is Bill Calvert and I’m a fifth generation dairy farmer at Moorclose Holsteins near Cuba City with my wife, Kelle. We milk 90 Registered Holsteins and crop 420 acres. We have three children, twin daughters Madison and McKenzie and son Payton, who are all active in the Junior Association. Kelle and I were named Distinguished Young Breeders by the Wisconsin Holstein Association in 2008 and received the National Dairy Shrine’s Progressive Producer Award in 2013. We’ve had the top rolling herd average in the county from 2005 to 2011 and were honored to win the Premier Exhibitor banner at District 3 in 2013 & 2014 and the Premier Breeder banner in 2014. While on the board I’ve served on the Communications and Scholarship Committees. I’ve enjoyed serving on the board of directors for the past three years and would like your support for a second term representing southwest Wisconsin.
Craig Carncross, Lodi My name is Craig Carncross and I would like to announce my candidacy for the Board of Directors. I farm in Lodi with my wife Jen and sons, Gavin (5) and Nolan (3), alongside my parents Gordon and Emily. Our farm name is Wargo Acres, from my grandpa Warren (War) and my dad Gordon (Go). I graduated from UW-Madison and then came home to join the family corporation in 1999. Some leadership roles I have held include serving on my local DHIA board, serving as the Chairman for the District 5 Show and serving on the state show committee. I have also had a variety of roles helping youth, from coaching dairy judging teams to judging county fairs. I have also served as a delegate to the National Convention and was honored to be awarded the Younger Distinguished Breeder award in 2011. Wargo Acres is mostly homebred with over 95% of the cows carrying our prefix or one of our partnerships. We are proud to have been a Progressive Breeder Herd for 21 years, have bred over 110 Excellent cows (43 currently in the herd) and just had our eighth cow surpass the 300,000 pound mark. I feel that I am well suited to represent the breeders of Wisconsin because of the variety of avenues I have been involved in with the Holstein business. I also understand that it is important the breeders of this state have a strong and vibrant support network that has their best interests in mind and works for them. The dairy industry is rapidly changing and so is our niche that we call Registered Holsteins. I want to continue to make being a member of Wisconsin Holstein a good investment that represents the wide array of dairies and the numerous ways one can be involved with the Registered Holstein. I would appreciate your support and would be honored represent you as a Board Member.
Kevin Jorgensen, Waupun My name is Kevin Jorgensen and I am running for my second term on the Wisconsin Holstein Board of Directors. It has been a privilege and honor representing you the past three years and would be honored to serve a second term. I reside in Waupun and am currently a Holstein Sire Analyst for Select Sires as well as own a group of 80 Registered Holsteins primarily in partnership with Mystic Valley Dairy LLC in Sauk City. Additionally, the sales business is a secondary business for me and I work as a ringman and pedigree announcer throughout the US. I hold a deep passion for the Holstein cow and the breeders who work with them and work hard to promote and create value in them whenever possible. During the past three years on the board, I have served on the Executive Committee the past two years as well as on Finance, Young Adult and Co-chair the Sales and Merchandising Committee. We were pleased with the results of re-introducing the Wisconsin Showcase Sale 12–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/January 2015
in 2013 after a seven year absence and are planning for the 125th Anniversary Edition on May 16th of this year. It is a strong belief of mine to promote the value of Registered Holsteins and the sale is an opportunity to benefit the members of the association. Once again thank you for the opportunity to serve you as a representative on the board and I would appreciate your support for another three years.
Pam Selz-Pralle, Humbird Registered Holsteins have played a tremendous role in my life and I would be honored to give back to this wonderful industry by serving on the Wisconsin Holstein Board. My husband Scott and I milk 400 cows in Humbird. Holsteins are our life and we are familiar faces at county, state and national events. I’ve been the Clark County Junior Holstein Advisor for 25 years, coach 4-H dairy judging and work with the county’s dairy program. Our children are active, enthusiastic juniors, thus I’m innately familiar with the junior program. On the state level, I’ve been a Wisconsin delegate to National Convention every year eligible and served on several state committees including two National Convention committees! My resume is rich in Ag. board experience, being past President of PDPW, AgSource, Central WI DHI and past Vice President of CRI. I credit those opportunities to growing up in Wisconsin Holstein and engaging in this wonderful registered industry. This former JAC chairman wants to give back to her first love - Wisconsin Holstein. I hope to bring my energy, creativity, business savvy, and board experience to the Wisconsin Holstein board and serve you the members of this great organization. I would appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you in River Falls!
Doug Wallerman, Norwalk Hello, I’m Doug Wallerman. I am 37 years old and farm with my wife Amanda and two kids Charlie, 5, and Maddie, 4, in partnership with my parents Carrol and Mary Wallerman in the heart of God’s country in Monroe County. We milk 150 head of mostly Registered Holsteins and work 600 acres of owned and rented land. In the past I was very active in the Junior Association having attended 10 Junior Conventions and winning many awards. I have served on our county Holstein board, spent six years on our county DHIA board, and I was very involved last year with the planning and hosting of the Adult Holstein Convention in Tomah. Currently, I serve as a delegete for our East Central Select Sires District and the sit on the Board of Trustees for the First United Methodist Church in Tomah. As always, we show every year at the District 2 Show and have taken several to the state show over the years. I am running for the board because I would like to be involved in helping to keep our Wisconsin Association the best in the nation and the one other states strive to be like. One of the ways I believe we could achieve this is to keep finding new and interesting things to make the younger generation wanting to be involved. I also think we need to try and get more people involved in showing and make it as much about having fun as it is about the competition. I hope that you will consider voting for me to become a member of your State Holstein Board of Directors

Convention Farm Tours Honeycrest Farms Inc.
Honeycrest Farms Inc. is a diversified operation that includes a well-known Registered Holstein herd, 1400 acres of cropland, and a 30-head cow/calf beef herd. They also finish out all dairy steers that haven’t gone to A.I. The farm is a family owned corporation that includes Larry and Linda Traynor, Dick and Dar Traynor, Bob and Kathy Traynor, Jeremiah and Rachel Traynor, and Steve and Jen Hince. Bob is the herd manager along with full-time herd assistant Eric Bechel. Cows are housed in New York style tie-stalls and milked in a double-six herringbone parlor with automatic take-offs. Traynors built a new 39-stall calf barn in 2013 for baby calves and have been really happy with how their heifers have done in the building, especially during last year’s harsh winter. The Honeycrest herd consists of 114 cows with a rolling herd average of 26,320M with 3.83% 1008F and 2.92% 768P. The current BAA is 107.5% with 10 EX, 42 VG and 40 GP cows. They’ve bred 45 EX cows and 23 Gold Medal Dams as well as developing two more GMDs. They have also had 21 homebred Dams of Merit and 22 cows that were bred or developed at Honeycrest that produced 40,000 pounds of milk. The herd has been recognized for 18 years with the Progressive Genetics award and 16 years as a Progressive Breeders’ Registry herd. To date, Honeycrest has sent 106 bulls to AI. Of the bulls that have received proofs, one out of six graduate to active AI. Two have been on the top 15 International TPI list and three more have made the Top 100 TPI list. Many of the herd highlights trace back to the Blackstar Kathryn family, but they’ve also purchased animals from good maternal lines over the years. Current favorites include several fresh Moguls from Lars-Acres Fel Festival-ET EX-90 (by Shadow Boxer). Festival was pur-
99%-RHA Discussion on the agenda at the WHA Annual Meeting
The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s board of directors would like to invite all interested members to attend the 2015 Annual Meeting for an industry update and open discussion led by Kevin Jorgensen. There is some concern about the the increasing rate and usage of 99%-RHA sires in the industry and the effect it will have on the number of 99%-RHA females in the herdbook in the future.
About the Ice Fishing Outing
Please join us for a fun western Wisconsin pastime! The ice fishing will take place in Spring Valley at the Eau Galle Rec Park. You can bring your own equipment but if you are a first timer, no worries someone will show you the ropes. The only thing you will need is a valid fishing license (a one day license can be purchased). There will also be a cookout for lunch.
About Wine & Painting
To participate in the wine and painting you do not need to have any experience in painting. This is a fun and easy going class where the instructor, Audrey Martin, will help you with every step along the way. Just sit back, relax and enjoy yourself ! We will be painting on an 18x18 canvas of a Holstein cow and you can make it black and white or red and white. If you would like you can also bring a picture of your favorite cow on the farm for inspiration on the markings. If you want to participate make sure you sign up for one of the three sessions offered.
Please join us for the Convention, because Where in the world would you rather be than Northern Wisconsin in February! chased in the 2011 Wisconsin Futures Sale and they have had great success flushing her. Two of her Mogul twoyear-olds are over +2440 GTPI. Traynors made another great purchase from a Wisconsin Futures Sale with Bosside Massey Mabel, VG-85. She’s currently milking 140 pounds Lars-Acres Fel Festival-ET EX-90 per day and has daughters by Sudan, Boxer, Man-O-Shan, Sterling and McCutchen. Another success story, Wilstar HCF Sanchez Alyssa EX-90, is a 10th generationa Excellent milking 130 pounds per day and has Halogen calves on the ground. Her dam, Wilstar-RS Titanic Alayna EX-90, was purchased in the Wilstar Dispersal. Another purchase is a GP-83 Shamrock from Scientific Gold Dish Rae. They have daughters from her by Relief, Satchel P and Pride and a red polled Long-P daughter. Bob is currently using top genomic sires as service sires with emphasis on DRP, PL, components and calving ease. He really likes the Gold Chip two-year-olds, with four scoring 86, 85, 85 and 83 points. He also likes the McCutchen and Limo Car calves. Bob was on the Wisconsin Board of Directors for six years and has been the Pierce County 4-H Dairy Judging coach for 28 years. Honeycrest Farms will be having a dispersal of 110 cows, heifers and calves off the top end of their herd on June 11, 2015.
Hinz Registered Holsteins
After working for several other farms while growing up, Kip Hinz has been slowly building his herd at Hinz Registered Holsteins for the wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/January 2015-15
last four years. He currently milks 60 cows on a rented farm near Spring Valley and is looking for a place to buy. Kip attended UW-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course and is a fourth generation dairyman. Kip started working for others at age 12 and continued to work for different herds all through high school. He feels that working for different herds was a blessing as it introduced him to different management styles. Along with milking cows, he worked as a heifer manager for five years and for a custom harvester and now utilizes many of the lessons he has learned in the day-to-day management of his operation. He cites Gretchen Johnson at Horse-Creek Holsteins as one of his mentors as she taught him everything he knows about cows and his time working there was when he really started to see what he wanted for his herd of cows. Kip originally started farming on his own near Osceola with 28 cows he purchased from the farm’s owner. He moved to his current location in October of 2012 and has expanded the herd to 60 cows. Through good management and good decisions, Kip has increased the rolling herd average from 19,180 pounds in the spring of 2011 to a current high of 33,860 milk with 1151F and 1002P on 3x milking. While the current BAA is about 105%, it has been as high as 107.8% when he was milking 28 cows. Kip has made several improvements to the barn including raising the floor 6 inches and installing grating over the gutter, enlarging the stalls in half of the barn and installing mats, adding tunnel fans for ventilation and changing from stanchions to comfort stalls. Kip uses the aAa mating system on all of his cows and is currently using sexed Zelgadis, Dundee, Attic and JayZ. He says he plans on using more Shottle and is going to go back to using more proven type sires and manage for milk. He loves his heifers by Dorcy, Baltimore, Aftershock and Dundee. Kip feels his best group of cows came from a group of 20 that he purchased from Jason Raymond of New Richmond. Current favorites include a VG-87 JayZ that made 41,160 at 3-01 and is currently milking 200 pounds per day; a VG-85 Radar-Red that had 22,770 at 2-01; and a VG-87 Shark that made 38,000 and had almost 200 pounds on her last two tests. Along with the milking herd and youngstock, he raises 100 acres of alfalfa and 50 acres of corn silage. He purchases all of the commodities to complete his one-group TMR. Kip’s goal is to be milking 100 cows in tie-stalls that average over 100 pounds of milk on over 70 percent forages.
Huppert Bros. Inc.
Generations of the Huppert family have been farming just outside of River Falls since 1928. Current owners of Huppert Bros., Inc. include Lawrence and Kay Huppert along with their daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jason Kjos. Jason and Lori have two daughters: Ambrea, a 6th grader at River Falls, and Amelia, a freshman at Minnesota State University Mankato majoring in nursing. Along with full-time employee Eric Rodencil, the partners also get help from Lawrence’s brother Donald and several part-time employees that attend UW-River Falls. The farm consists of 700 owned and rented acres of cropland where they produce corn, soybeans and alfalfa. The milking herd is made up of 140 cows with a rolling herd average of 25,500 pounds of milk. The herd is about 30% registered and they have a BAA of 107%. They built the freestall barn in 1998 and completed a herringbone parlor in the L-Maples Kite Sugar-Red EX-91 old tie-stall barn in 1999. 16–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/January 2015
They also built a hoop barn for calves just over a decade ago and really like how well it works for their heifer raising needs. The family has purchased calves over the years from good maternal lines to help build the registered herd. It all started with the purchase of one calf, L-Maples Kite Sugar-Red EX-91, at the 2004 WHA Convention sale in River Falls. Sugar has had a huge influence on the registered herd and there are 20-plus offspring in the herd today, including cows by Shottle, Goldwyn, Durham and Reality-Red. There are also some Redliners coming that Jason is excited about. They also purchased animals over the years from the Blackrose, Roxy, Elegance and Klattview Atreyu Tiara families. Another favorite, Hup-Bro Goldwyn Fancy EX-90, is a granddaughter of Willows-Edge Gib Fancy EX-94. Her dam by Durham was purchased at a UW-River Falls Dairy Club sale. Fancy is owned by Amelia and was Champion Bred and Owned of the Junior Show at the 2014 Minnesota Fall National Show. They have an Aftershock daughter from Fancy and two more coming. Jason feels reproduction is the number one priority at the dairy as it affects the entire operation. He also believes their focus on DPR over the last 10 years has made a difference. While he uses type bulls on some of their cow families, milk, feet and legs and health traits are a higher priority for the commercial herd. When choosing sires, DPR and PL are first priority followed by milk and type. Jason stated that their proximity to River Falls is a blessing when it comes to finding hired help as they can draw from the students at the university. In fact, their full-time employee Eric worked for them while he was in college and returned to work for them after graduating and farming on his own for a few years. Jason also acknowledges that with the city creeping closer to the farm, it is important for them to maintain a good relationship with the neighbors in the nearby subdivisions and make it a priority to keep the farmstead cleaned up and well-maintained to give a good impression to those driving by.
Young Breeder Panel to be featured at the WHA Adult Convention Friday, February 20 starting at 4:30 p.m. Danae Bauer manages the calves, oversees the ET and IVF programs and assists in marketing at SandyValley Farms, Scandinavia – a 400cow operation that focuses on breeding cows that can be admired for their type while excelling in production and fertility in a commercial environment. Matt Johnson and his family milk 260 cows just outside of Baldwin. Matt farms with his father, Bob, brothers Brad and Pat, and his mother, Nancy. Their breeding program focuses on long-lasting cows that are productive for many lactations. Trent Hendrickson is the owner and operator of Trent-Way Genetics, New Glarus. He is milking 70 cows, and his breeding program emphasizes development of strong cow families with high type and production.
We hope you’ll join us in River Falls! This panel sponsored by the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Young Adult Committee.
J
oin us February 20-21 as we kick off the 125th anniversary of the Wisconsin Holstein Association. We have a fun and interesting convention planned at the Best Western Plus in downtown River Falls. We are kicking the whole thing off with an ice fishing outing, (it’s what we do up here) at the Eau Galle Rec Area near Spring Valley. Holes will be drilled, tackle and bait will be provided, shacks and HEATERS will be available if it’s chilly. If you want to fish all you need is a fishing license. You can get a one day license at Fleet Farm, Stockman's Farm Supply, the DNR website, or anyplace that sells licenses. Or if you just want to watch, have a brat (grilled on the ice), drink a beverage and hang out, you can do that also. It will start at 10:00 am on Friday and run till 1:00-1:30 pm depending on how the fish are biting, and you can still get to the hotel in time for the presentation from the National Holstein folks. If your spouse isn’t interested in fishing and would like to do the wine and paint outing, you can drop by the lake and they can go on to River Falls for that. Fishermen are great at car-pooling. We also welcome you to tour Honeycrest Farms on Saturday afternoon during the convention farm tours. Hopefully you’ll find a reason to join us again in June for...
We will be selling 110-120 head of the absolute top end of the herd. The sale will be managed by Courtney Sales.
We hope you can join us in the Great Northwest! N6842 Cty BB Spring Valley, WI 54767

Wisconsin Holstein’s Wall of Fame Recognizing the most influential breeders, cows and sires of Wisconsin Holstein history
est. 1890
The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Wall of Fame was founded in 1990, the year of WHA’s centennial celebration, by the board of directors. A committee has selected one person, cow and bull to be added to this prestigious list each of the last 25 years, with all recipients being recognized at the annual Adult Holstein Convention. One of the major requirements for this award is the recipient be deceased for more than ten years, with the explanation that if WHA members and breeders can still remember those that have passed for individual accomplishments or the influence on the breed as a cow or bull, they are worthy of induction into the Wall of Fame. Only one person has ever been made an exception for the above rule, and that was Marlowe Nelson, inducted at the 2014 convention.
Marlowe’s undeniable impact on the entire Registered Holstein industry made him a logical choice for the Wall of Fame. As the first living legend added to the wall, his name is recognized globally and his contributions will forever be remembered in WHA history. In order to be inducted into the Wall of Fame, cows must be bred or developed in Wisconsin. Bulls must be bred by a Wisconsin Holstein breeder, housed and extensively used in Wisconsin, or have been a major contributor to key Wisconsin female bloodlines. Finally, the person must have been a resident of Wisconsin for most of their lives. The Wall of Fame committee has their work cut out for them each and every year, with several deserving individuals. As the list continues to grow, Wisconsin Holstein breeders should take pride in the quality of bulls, cows and people that the dairy state has the privilege to call their own.

This past year, members of the Eau Claire County Holstein Breeders supplied judging classes for the District Animal Science days in Eau Claire. They set up and ran the milk house at the county fair. In an attempt to draw more interest in showing milking cows at the county fair, a new program was started, whereby those juniors who exhibited a cow would receive the proceeds of gift baskets auctioned off. The first year showed some interest and there is hope to continue this annually. Due to the lack of a host farm, there was no “Visit the Farm” day this past year. This event has been held annually combining the efforts of the Holstein breeders, along with other local organizations, to promote agriculture within the urban and suburban communities. There is a desire to bring this event back next year. The Holstein Breeders also provided support for the dairy youth in the county to show at the Wisconsin State Fair.

Scholarship Opportunities
The 2015 Wisconsin Holstein Scholarship applications are due March 1, 2015. The association has awarded an average of over $10,000 to members in order to assist them in their rising education expenses. In 2014, the association awarded $16,000 in scholarships to our junior members. Each year, loyal donors contribute items to the scholarship auctions at Junior and Adult Conventions in order to sustain our memorial scholarships and general scholarship fund. Thank you to the members who purchase these items in our auctions, and to the donors that offer these items for auction. An additional scholarship available to Junior Holstein members is the John and Isabelle Ames Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship, established in memory of John and Isabelle Ames of Ames-Way Holsteins in Darien, Wisconsin, is a $500 award to be given upon proof of registration for classes during the second semester of the current school year. Mr. and Mrs. Ames were avid supporters of education – all nine of their children received a college degree, which was a source of pride for them. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate a commitment toward completion of a degree. A link to both scholarship applications will be posted on our website under the calendar of events and on the junior awards page. Watch social media for deadline reminders as well.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great holiday with family and friends. As we look to an exciting new year, I want to tell you about some of the things we have planned for the 125th Anniversary of the Wisconsin Holstein Association. First, as you’ll notice in this issue, we’re going to be doing a special feature on one of WHA’s awards or programs in each issue as well as showcasing a cover and advertisement from a past issue. Another way we are looking back at old memories is to feature a photo each week on our Facebook page for “Throwback Thursdays”. If you have a photo you would like to submit, please email ashleyy@wisholsteins.com. We are also offering some special contract advertising prices for those that would like to celebrate the 125th with us. We will be giving a $125 discount on four full page ads done in any issues throughout the year (discount taken on fourth ad). We also have our regular advertising packages and 6-time advertising contract rates. If you are interested in signing up for any of these contracts, please give me a call or email. Next month is our double-buy opportunity with the Holstein World. If you are interested in advertising in both publications for a discounted rate, please give me a call by Wednesday, January 7. We’ll also be talking about the Service Award and Young Breeder winners as well as featuring District 4. The March issue will be another Midwest Holsteins issue. If you have a spring sale consignment or herd update you’d like to advertise, please give me a call to reserve your ad space by Friday, February 6. A couple of reminders - Top Performer entries are due Friday, January 9. Also, membership renewals have been sent. If you have not paid your membership for 2015, please do so you don’t miss any issues of the News. If you did not receive a renewal postcard, please give Sharon a call at our office at 1-800-223-4269. Until next time... 28–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/January 2015
