Westphalia Farm has had great success selling Rose’s family members at local county sales over the past ten years. There are over twenty family members from this family in the herd today. Westphalia Farm also makes a point to bring in one to three new bloodlines each year to add to the genetic make-up of the herd. The current new bloodlines at Westphalia Farm include: Amlaird Lee Alice EX-94, Brookview Tony Charity EX-97, Howard-Home Valiant Eva EX-94, Blondin Lyster Beauty EX-92, Tora Triple Threat Lula EX-96, Glendridge Citation Roxy EX-97, Snow-NDenises Dellia EX-95, GMB Valiant Starbuck Janice EX-94 and Henkenseen M Hillary EX-94. Madison also has two Excellent daughters by Advent in the herd. In all, Madison has four EX daughters, one VG-89 two-year-old and three VG offspring with more on the way. Westphalia Farm runs 134 acres of owned land, as well as 60 acres of rented land, where they grow alfalfa grass mix, corn silage, oatlage and rye silage. The cows are fed a ration of haylage, corn silage, baled hay and top-dressed with cottonseed and a complete grain-protein mix. On the farm, the calves are raised in hutches until they reach three months of age. From there, they are moved to group pens until breeding age with access to pasture at six to nine months of age. The breeding age heifers are housed in freestalls with access to pasture. In the winter, the dry cows and bred heifers are housed in a pack barn, but have access to pasture in spring, summer, and fall. Sixty-seven cows in the herd are housed in the stall barn, which is bedded with straw and wood shavings on a mattress, but have daily exercise if the weather permits with access to pasture in spring, summer, and fall. The remaining fifteen to twenty milk cows are housed in a sand bedded freestall barn and switched into the stall barn for milking. Westphalia Farm shows at the Fond du Lac County Holstein Futurity, District 10 Show, the Wisconsin State Fair, Wisconsin State Championship Show, World Dairy Expo, and for the first time in 2010, at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada. Last show season, the farm experienced great success. Westphalia SS Amaryllis-Red was the first Red & White Spring Calf at World Dairy Expo and Unanimous All-American Red & White. Westphalia Laurin Harmony VG-87 was the All-Wisconsin Fall Yearling, 2nd Fall Yearling in Milk at the Royal Winter Fair, Reserve All-Canadian and Reserve AllAmerican. The Westphal Family enjoys rooting for the Wisconsin home teams including the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and the

Wisconsin Badgers. They also enjoy attending various cattle shows throughout the year, especially World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair. In the future, the Westphals plan on maintaining their current herd size while increasing cow comfort and overall day to day efficiency, which would allow for more time with the family. They also hope to continue to increase genetic levels and marketing, while maintaining their show ring success.

From your President Corey Geiger Dear Wisconsin Holstein Association members: I would like to invite everyone to our Town Hall Meeting on Genomics which will take place Thursday, July 21, 2011, at 1 p.m., at the Rib River Ballroom located at 3237 State Highway 29, Marathon, Wis. The panel will give breeders the opportunity to learn first-hand from four industry professionals who work extensively with genomics. Heading the group will be Curt Van Tassell who is USDA’s lead researcher on genomics. Adding to the in-depth discussion will be a pair of industry leading sire analysts: Select Sires’ Charlie Will and Alta Genetics’ Jay Jauquet. Rounding out the team will be Tom Schmitt of Morningview Holsteins in Durango, Iowa. Schmitt and his family have a 90-cow dairy that was the nation’s top genetic herd in 2008, and they were recognized as a Holstein USA Herd of Excellence. All are welcome. Bring a friend. On another matter, every program needs a review from time-to-time. This includes our Association’s oldest program, the Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) recognition which dates back to 1933. As part of that review, Chris Williams, WHA Director of Operations, along with the 2010 Junior Advisors, Lisa Behnke, Lynn Harbaugh, Matt Lippert, Jim Rickert, and myself, met on multiple occasions this winter to discuss the issue and arrive at some modifications. The WHA Board of Directors adopted the group’s recommendations at the April board meeting. We conducted a full review of the DJM scorecard and made some adjustments that are now in line with National Holstein’s point system. On Wisconsin’s old DJM scorecard, 30 points were assigned to responses on Personal Views. That section was reduced to 15 points to mirror the National scorecard. Those 15 points were then assigned to three areas: 1. Non-Agricultural Activities and Projects went from 10 to 15 points. 2. A category called Knowledge of Management Practices was created on the DJM application. Under this category the following three sections were brought together: Inventory of Registered Holsteins Owned, Production Records of Producing Cows, and Management Records. Under the old scorecard, each was worth 5 points. An additional 5 points was assigned to Management Records to bring the entire three-part section to 20 points. 3. Neatness/Accuracy/Poise was added as a 5-point section. Neatness and accuracy come into play on the written application. While accuracy and poise factors in during the interview. When judges select the National DJM representatives and Outstanding Holstein Boy and Girl, 50 percent of the final score is calculated from the written form and 50 percent comes from the oral interview. The same group of judges is involved in the entire process from the start all the way through naming the winners. Moving forward, a pool of possible judges will be assembled by the Director of Operations and presented to the WHA Executive Committee for their approval by August 1 of each year with the prospective judges receiving invitations shortly after that process. Five judges will continue to evaluate our DJM candidates, but steps have been added to ensure diversity of the panel. DJM judges will include: an agricultural educator; one agribusiness professional; one WHA Junior Advisor and/or past DJM recipient; one Holstein breeder that actively dairy farms; and one at-large judge. The judging panel will be geographically diverse with no one coming from the same county, nor a husband-wife combination. Every effort will be made to identify potential conflicts of interest during the panel selection process. At least one judge will be asked to return for a second year and not more than two judges will return for a second year. This should ensure some continuity in the process from year-to-year. Realizing these are the best and brightest youth, Wisconsin’s four National DJM representatives will continue to receive a $500 scholarship from the WHA Scholarship Committee which cannot be doubled if a contestant is named Wisconsin’s Outstanding Holstein Boy or Girl. Our committee appreciates all the constructive thoughts voiced by WHA members during the past months and we hope these actions make our cornerstone youth award even better. In dairy we trust, Your President, Corey Geiger 14–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/June 2011

2011 Midwest National Spring Show The 2011 Midwest National Spring Show was held in Jefferson, Wis., on Saturday, April 16. Judge Michael Heath placed 196 animals - 105 heifers and 91 cows. Taking home Grand Champion honors was the winning four-yearold, Dubeau Dundee Hezbollah, exhibited by St Jacobs/ABC Inc., Lomira, Wis. Reserve Grand Champion was the second place four-yearold, Ms Dundee Belinda-ET, exhibited by Jeff Butler of Chebanse, Ill. Judge Heath commented that the winning four-year-old “is a house, she’s a truck but she’s dairy along with that. She has beautiful feet and legs and an awesome mammary. The second place four-year-old has extreme balance but just is not as much cow, but you have to admire her at the top of her rear udder.” Intermediate Champion was Dri-land Talent 1465, exhibited by Bohn and Matt and Travis Smith, Watertown, Wis. Reserve Intermediate Champion was the winning Senior Two-year-old, Siemers Goldwyn Goldie, exhibited by Jordan & Whitney Ebert, Algoma, Wis. Judge Heath commented that it was quite an Intermediate Champion class and pulled out the four cows he preferred. In the end, the winning Senior ThreeYear-Old got the nod because of her maturity and having two calves. Judge Heath commented “she has more bloom and pop to her rear udder. She also has ther teats set underneath more squarely and has more levelness of the udder floor. She also excels wth her width of muzzle, length of frame and raw power.” Topping the heifer show were the Spring and Fall Yearling class winners. Junior Champion honors went to BVK Atwood Arianna-ET, exhibited by Frank and Diane Borba of Chebanse, Ill. Reserve Junior Champion was Ms Duckett Durham Beauty-ET, exhibited by Calep DeWitt, Clinton, Wis. Judge Heath stated it “was quite a heifer show. I pulled out four heifers that are exceptional, heifers that are a lot alike great legged with high style.” In the end, he selected the Spring Yearling because she was stronger in the paster, deeper in the heel and cleaner and flater in the bone through her hock. She also exhibited a little bit more femininity and breed character of the head, however the fall yearling has an advantage in depth of fore rib and drop of rib. Taking home top honors of the junior show was Opsal Stiles Myron Coral exhibited by Felicia Opsal of Blue Mounds, Wis. Reserve Champion of the Junior Show was Siemers Goldwyn Happy-ET, exhibited by Crystal, Jordan, Josh, Jake, Connor & Lauren Siemers, Newton, Wis. Also winning Junior Champion honors of the Junior Show was Cal DeWitt’s Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show, Ms Duckett Durham BeautyET. Reserve of the Junior Show was the first place Fall Calf, Crave Dusk Penny 6262, exhibited by Roseanne Crave, Waterloo, Wis. Winning the Premier Breeder banner at the 201` Midwest Spring Show was Siemers Holsteins, Newton. Milk Source Genetics LLC, Kaukauna, took home the Premier Exhibitor banner. The Wisconsin Holstein Association would like to thank all the show sponsors and trophy sponsors that helped to make the Midwest National Spring Show a success.

MARATHON COUNTY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS

Introducing... 1n 1905 John and Anna Furger began farming an 80 acres farm presently known as Twin-B-Dairy LLC. The family farm was sold to their daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Walter, in 1953. Walter and Mary Ann purchased an additional 120 acres of land and started to modernize the farm. Family contributions helped the farm become a success throughout the years. Walter and Mary Ann’s six children, Janice, Dennis, Laurence, Floyd, Lloyd and Sandy Ann and all of their children help the success of Twin-B-Dairy. Floyd and Lloyd purchased the 200 acre family farm from their parents in 1980. Floyd and Lloyd, along with Floyd’s wife Sandee Jo, now operate the 700 acre family farm. Floyd and Lloyd milk 110 Registered Holsteins and have a current rolling herd average of 25,425 lbs. with 912 lbs. fat and 789 lbs. protein and a BAA of 106.5. In 1990 Floyd and Lloyd became partners with Fred Lang to purchase and produce elite cattle, known as Langs-Twin-B. Currently, the key cow families they are working with are Langs-Twin-B Allyson-ET, Langs-Twin-B C-S Ashlyn-ET, and Ralma Baxter Cheerio. At present, these elite animals have bulls in A.I., and females as high as +2540 GTPI. An important part of Twin-B and Langs-Twin-B success is hosting the Central Wisconsin Summer Event sale. July 21, 2011, will be the 6th year of hosting this very high profile sale. Red & White PROFILE

Milk Source Genetics, LLC by Kathie McCullough The original beginnings of Milk Source Genetics, LLC, traces back to a small thirty cow farm near Kaukauna, WI once owned by co-founder John Voster’s parents in 1965. In 1999, Voster and partners, Jim Ostrom and Todd Willer, formed Milk Source operating a group of dairies dotting eastern Wisconsin. In 2007, Milk Source Genetics, an elite fifty cow show barn, was opened and set to take the black and white and more recently, the red and white tanbark trail by storm. The founding member of Milk Source’s red and white show string Milk Source Genetics, LLC was Budjon-Nitzy Destiny-Red-ET EX-92. Tally continued her winning ways by placing first in the Four-Year-Old class in the red show and was part of the parade of champions, leading the way as Grand Champion. Milk Source finished the day on a high note by taking home a third major Premier Exhibitor Banner. This was another very proud moment for the entire crew at Milk Source Genetics. As for the other members of the string, many of them are pending a successful calving and awaiting the fall shows. Jamie says that Indigo will be bred back again shortly. Limited calved on April 23 with a Contender heifer calf and “looks tremendous.” Destiny is due in June to Destry and Tally was fresh last summer and will be

bred to calve back next spring. When asked if Milk Source is looking to buy more red genetics, Jamie says that, “We are always on the look-out for good, young red and whites and black and whites.” They also plan to continue to develop the young cows they already have, sell some offspring, and with a little luck, have more red heifers on the ground to continue the red and white success that Milk Source has already gotten a sweet taste of.

Red & White PROFILE

April-Day Holsteins by Laura Elliott Many Holstein enthusiasts find their love of the Holstein cow on a family dairy farm. This is no different for Ed Peck of April-Day Holsteins. Growing up he spent many hours working with his uncle, Louie Klecker, on his farm in the small town of Marshall, near the capital city of Madison. Working on his uncle’s grade herd, Peck also found his passion for Red and White Holsteins and the agriculture industry. At a young age, Peck found his place within the agriculture industry, attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Dairy Science. Ed served as Wisconsin’s State FFA treasurer in 1986 and then as the President in 1987-88. Peck says this opportunity helped to shape and mold him in his future endeavors. Never having the opportunity to be a dairy farmer himself, Peck knew he wanted to stay very involved in the industry in marketing and promotion. After working for Hoard’s Dairyman, ABS Global, and two agricultural marketing agencies, he realized he wanted to settle closer to home to have more flexibility to balance owning cattle and running a business. In 2004 Peck’s most recent business undertaking came to life. Filament Marketing officially opened its doors in April of 2004. Filament focuses on passion for the agriculture industry and marketing expertise deeply rooted in strategy. Pecks belief that being involved in the industry is as important to clients as it is to himself and his employees. Filament’s clients share the same passion for the industry that he has. Always challenging himself, Peck started his very own herd of Holsteins in 1990 with his first purchase. Lost-Elm Promo RequestRed, a purchase from the Black River Fall County Classic, turned into a VG-85 cow with a few VG daughters and granddaughters. A year later Peck expanded his herd, buying two additional animals. One was Nehls Valley Leader Christi *RC who went VG-85 and as a two year old produced over 30,000 pounds of milk. Christi later put two bulls into AI. The second of his two purchases was Crestbrook Leadman Niki-ET *RC. Niki went on to score EX-91 3E, and was flushed extensively, sending a total of five sons to AI. In the Spring of 2001 Peck made another purchase that would unexpectedly change the foundation of his herd. Cityview Ruby Wine-Red was purchased before she entered the ring at the Midwest National Spring Show and later that day went on to be named Reserve Junior Champion. Wine ultimately went VG-88 as a fouryear-old and has produced many very notable offspring. Ruby Wine’s most memorable show-ring progeny is April-Day D Burgundy-Red EX-90. Burgundy was purchased by Sunny Valley

Cityview Ruby Wine-Red VG-88 Holsteins for whom she was later named All-American Red & White Junior 3 Year Old and won the Red & White Kingsmill Futurity at World Dairy Expo in 2006. Wine was bred to Jordan-Red for her first calf, a calf named AprilDay Wisconsin-Red who is still in active service for ABS Global at +1570 GTPI. April-Day Wisconsin-Red’s full-sister, April-Day J Merlot, was sold in the 2006 National Red & White Convention sale by a partnership in which Peck was involved. Merlot had been flushed to Bolton prior to the sale, which resulted in two daughters, split by the partners. Peck picked the now notable daughter, April-Day B Chardonay-ET, VG-86, +1862 GTPI, +935M, +1.81UDC, who now carries several AI contracts. Peck bought Merlot back at the sale and she was flushed again to Toystory. Two daughters resulted from this flush - April-Day TS Spumante-ET *RC, VG-87, +1892 GTPI; and April-Day TS Champagne-ET *RC, now VG-85 and +1764 GTPI. Both Toystory daughters carry AI contracts, and Spumante is housed at Sunshine Genetics on an extensive flush program. Though Ruby Wine was lost after calving in 2006, she left behind what would become the new cornerstone in the April-Day herd. Sired by Shottle, April-Day S Verdejo *RC, VG-86, +1938 GTPI, +520M, +2.36UDC, holds no less than 23 AI bull and embryo contracts, for which she continues to be flushed to fill. Verdejo was a risk of Peck’s but that risk paid off. At the time of the mating, Shottle was a new bull with a high price tag and seldom used on Red cows. Peck has continued to take risks with Verdejo in his breeding, hoping to create new daughters that will be even more sought after than Verdejo herself. Peck is always looking ahead for

April-Day TS Spumante-ET *RC VG-87

outcross pedigrees with high combinations with both production and type. He believes it is important to not be afraid to use a top black bull with the risk of losing the red gene. Some of Verdejo’s prominent daughters including April-Day N Nosiola-ET *RC, +2136 GTPI, +1614M, +1.9UDC. Her Niagra daughter has already had contract interest at six months of age. A Boliver daughter of Verdejo, April-Day Bol Zisola *RC, +1923 GTPI, +814M, +3.7PL, +1.28UDC, is another high genomic Verdejo daughter who is already transmitting well herself. One of her Fidelity daughters is April-Day Fid Raboso-Red-ET at +1920 GTPI and +495NM. Three out of Verdejo first four daughters have been contracted, while Verdejo herself continues to write contracts as well. When Peck speaks of his cows he says the cow he believe that has given the most to April-Day is Ruby Wine. She has several successful branches that he has both developed and sold to other breeders to develop. Ruby Wine was an extremely fertile cow and trouble free. The cow that Peck admires the most is her Shottle daughter Verdejo. He is proud to have bred this cornerstone cow who is a slow maturing cow yet is still one of the top breeding Red & White two year olds. Peck says she has never had a day of mastitis, and is a very low maintenance cow. Verdejo is transmitting as consistently as her dam has. In total, April-Day has sent 27 bulls to A.I., including the first six sons of Verdejo. Another five sons have been born and are awaiting admittance testing. With all of April-Day’s success over the past few years, Peck says he has had a lot of people to keep him honest along the way. He believes his partnership with Brian and Julie Duffin of Brooklyn, Wis., was very important in developing his cows. He noted they were always there to bounce ideas off of and discuss what a true balanced cow should be. In 2010, April-Day Holsteins and Fertile Ridge Dairy entered a partnership as part of the Fertile Ridge herd expansion. All April-Day breeding animals are now housed at Fertile Ridge Dairy in Mt. Horeb, Wis., with the exception of flush cows and heifers, which are housed

You’re Invited!

at Sunshine Genetics. The commercial herd serves as a source of recipients for the future genetically elite animals, which will be part of the APRILDAY-FRD partnership. In the future Peck hopes to continue to be unique in the pedigrees, and is looking closer at combining the polled gene within outcross pedigrees. He knows he does not have the time for the show cattle type and he is not afraid to sell a good one to a herd that can do more with an animal than he can. With all that Peck has accomplished over the years, he still accredits his drive and passion to his uncle, of whom he cannot say enough about. Although most of what Peck has accomplished has come to light since his uncle has passed and he couldn’t be here to see the influence of his passion, Peck feels that he is still looking over him.

Forum to Focus on How Genomics is Reshaping Dairy Cattle Breeding Since its introduction in 2008, genomics has significantly changed how dairy cattle breeders choose sires and make matings for the next generation. In fact, genomics has likely made the biggest impact on dairy cattle selection in Holsteins, Jerseys, and Brown Swiss since the introduction of genetic evaluations nearly five decades ago. With any new science, there are opportunities and concerns as it is incorporated into the dairy operation. To help breeders better understand the impact of genomics and how the technology may fit into their breeding program, the Wisconsin Holstein Association will be hosting a forum to discuss this pressing matter. The town hall meeting will take place on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Rib River Ballroom located at 3237 State Highway 29, Marathon, Wis. The four genomic specialists will provide the opportunity for dairy producers throughout the Midwest to ask questions and get answers regarding genomics. All interested in dairy genetics are welcome to attend the afternoon event. The panel gives breeders the opportunity to learn first-hand from four industry professionals who work extensively with genomics. Heading the group will be Curt Van Tassell who is USDA’s lead researcher on genomics. Van Tassell continues to head up the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Bovine Functional Genomics project and will be able share the latest work on the project. Adding to the in-depth discussion will be a pair of industry leading sire analysts: Select Sires’ Charlie Will and Alta Genetics’ Jay Jauquet. Charlie Will is the long-time manager of Select Sires’ Holstein sire selection group who acquired notable sires such as Blackstar, Elton, Mathie, Integrity, BW Marshall, Durham, Blitz and Oman. Jay Jauquet is not only a regional sire analyst with Alta genetics but is an owner of a 300-cow dairy in Pulaski, Wis., for the past seven years. He purchased bulls like AltaSuede, AltaAdam, AltaZesty, AltaFinley, AltaBaxter, and AltaRoss. Rounding out the team will be Tom Schmitt of Morningview Holsteins in Durango, Iowa. Schmitt and his family have a 90-cow dairy that was the nation’s top genetic herd in 2008, and they were recognized as a Holstein USA Herd of Excellence. These four well-spoken individuals will share their experiences, both positive and negative, with the new technology. After the panel’s presentations, questions will be accepted from the floor. Moderating the forum will be Corey Geiger who serves as the Wisconsin Holstein president and is a national director of the Holstein Association USA. He brings practical experience, having worked with genomics on his family’s dairy farm and by extensively covering the topic for Hoard’s Dairyman magazine.

Wisconsin Holstein, the hosts for this event, is a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting Wisconsin Registered Holsteins for its 3,300 members statewide. For more questions on this forum or what WHA has to offer, contact the WHA office at 1-800-223-4269 or visit the Association’s website at www.wisholsteins.com.

Holstein Association USA Announces 2011 Herds of Excellence Brattleboro, VT: Holstein Association USA is proud to announce nine U.S Registered Holstein herds that have qualified for the 2011 Herd of Excellence recognition. These herds have all achieved the rigorous criteria to qualify for this honor, as follows: must be 25 percent above breed average Mature Equivalent (ME) for milk, fat, and protein; must have classified within the last year and have an actual average classification score of 83 points or higher; must have at least 70 percent of the herd homebred; and must be enrolled in the Association’s TriStarSM program. Joseph Brantmeier - Hilrose Holsteins, Sherwood, Wis. 84.7% Homebred, Average Classification Score: 85.0 ME Averages: 34,508M 1,298F 998P Hilrose Holsteins is a family operation with Joe Brantmeier and sons Andy and Jeff sharing the work and decision-making responsibilities. Milking 110 cows in their tiestall barn, they have received PBR recognition for 21 years, and Joe and his wife, Chris, were proud to receive the Distinguished Breeder Award at the 2011 Wisconsin Holstein Convention. This is the fourth time they have been named a Herd of Excellence. The herd is enrolled in Holstein COMPLETE, and uses EASYSM and Tag ID with custom tags for registration. Their goal is to develop cows with long, productive lives, with an emphasis on overall type, udder composite, and components. Some genomic young sires are being used, but they are selective, using bulls from good cow families with high type, such as Comestar Lauthority, Fustead Goldwyn Guthrie-ET, Mr Chassity Gold Chip-ET and Regancrest S Braxton-ET. Their emphasis on longevity has paid off, as the Brantmeiers haves bred over 30 cows that have produced over 200,000 pounds of milk, six that have made over 300,000 pounds and two with over 400,000 pounds of milk (scored VG-87 and EX-92). Joe credits his father as being a good dairyman, advising him to use the best bulls he could and to emphasize udder and feet and leg composites. That advice has paid off, and Joe is excited that the future of Hilrose is in good hands with the next generation. Along with Andy and Jeff, Joe and Chris have a daughter, Sara. Thomas J. Kestell - Ever-Green-View Farms, Waldo, Wis. 78.8% Homebred, Average Classification Score: 83.4 ME Averages: 32,557M 1,233F 973P Tom Kestell milks close to 100 Holsteins on his farm, three times per day, with the milking cows housed in a tiestall barn. The EverGreen-View herd is enrolled in Holstein COMPLETE, are 11-year recipients of PBR distinction and a 19-year Progressive Genetics Herd. Tom and wife Gin’s son, Chris, is involved in the operation on a day-today basis, along with their other hired help, who Tom is quick to credit as a key part of the farm’s successes. Kestell’s goal is to breed cows that produce high volumes of milk with good component levels and sustainable type. Bulls being used in the herd currently include proven sires Charlesdale Superstition-ET, Ensenada Taboo Planet-ET and younger bulls like Ladys-Manor PL Shamrock-ET and Ronelee Toystory Domain-ET. The cow that has had the largest impact in the Kestell herd is an Emprise Bell Elton daughter, Ever-Green-View Elsie-ET EX-92 GMD DOM, with a record of over 52,000 pounds of milk. Tom has been working with this cow family for over 28 years, with several high profile animals tracing back to it, including the current national milk production record holder Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET (Elsie’s granddaughter) and the number one TPI international bull from the April 2011 run, Flevo Genetics Snowman-ET (Elsie’s great-grandson). “Everything is kept very consistent - the feed, the work schedule,” said Tom. “We stay focused on our goals and try to breed good cattle consistently.” Kestell merchandises hundreds of embryos annually, along with live cattle. Steve & Amanda Killian - Dirt-Road Holsteins, Blair, Wis. 84.6% Homebred, Average Classification Score: 84.3 ME Averages: 32,440M 1,210F 1,032P Steve and Amanda Killian have worked hard over the past decade to make continual improvements to their dairy operation and the genetics they work with, starting on their own 11 years ago. Their 80 cows, 40 of them Registered Holsteins, are housed in a tiestall barn 42–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/June 2011

and fed a TMR. During the growing season, the cows spend at least eight hours per day on pasture. The vast majority of the Killian’s Holstein herd can be traced to Castleholm T Carlo-ET EX-91 3E GMD DOM. Sired by Olmo Prelude Tugolo and backed by several generations of Very Good and Excellent cows, she has made 192,000 pounds of lifetime milk and is still on the farm today. Flushing Carlo to Braedale Goldwyn resulted in Dirt-Road Goldwyn Cami-ET, a cow that has “put them on the map.” Cami is scored VG-86 and made a two-year-old record over 32,000 pounds of milk, with a GTPI of +1977. She has 26 registered offspring, sired by a variety of bulls including England-Ammon Million-ET, Long-Langs Oman Oman-ET, Badger-Bluff Fanny Freddie-ET and Ri-Val-Re 2338 Niagra-ET. The Killian’s breeding program focuses on type and components, rarely using a bull that is minus for fat or protein. They are using a variety of high genomic young bulls as service sires, striving to keep current with what the market demands, as many of their breedings are for embryo or bull contracts. The couple has five children: Samuel, 10, Christian, 8, Olivia, 4, Bo, 2, and Jack, who is five months old. This is the third time DirtRoad Holsteins has been named a Herd of Excellence. Bruce & Brenda Long - B-Long Holsteins, New London, Wis. 98.2% Homebred, Average Classification Score: 83.8 ME Averages: 34,358M 1,201F 998P Bruce and Brenda Long started B-Long Holsteins in 1990, after working on Brenda’s parents’ farm following graduation from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. They now milk 55 Registered Holsteins in a tiestall barn twice a day. The Longs have three sons, Bryant, 21, and twins Brandon and Bret, 20. They received have received the Herd of Excellence award four years running, were Holstein Association USA’s Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders in 2007, and are a 15-year Progressive Genetics Herd. Over 80 percent of their current herd can be traced back to two calves Bruce purchased when he was 14 years old. Another 10 percent descend from animals from Brenda’s home farm. When choosing bulls to use on the farm, Bruce and Brenda’s goal is to breed for large, powerful cows with big frames, plenty of strength and width, and good components. The Longs place an emphasis on cows that will live a long time, produce high volumes of milk, and transmit those qualities to their offspring. Over the years, they have developed 20 Gold Medal Dams and 10 Dams of Merit. Four cows they bred have produced over 300,000 pounds of milk, with the highest being B-Long Elton Gypsy VG-86 GMD, who produced 341,980 in seven lactations. Over 20 more cows have produced over 200,000 pounds of lifetime milk. Cow comfort is a high priority, and cows are given access to pasture yearround, which they feel helps the soundness and longevity of their herd. Merlin A. Rohm - See-More-View Holsteins, Seymour, Wis. 94.4% Homebred, Average Classification Score: 83.2 ME Averages: 33,052M 1,205F 993P Merlin and Peggy Rohm describe their home farm as a small operation, a partnership that allows them to pay attention to details that can make a big difference in the long run. The couple milks 70 cows twice a day in a tiestall barn. They have received PBR recognition for 12 years and have been named a PGH for six years. The Rohms’ herd is enrolled in Holstein COMPLETE. Rohm says they enjoy working with good pedigreed animals and the marketing opportunities Registered Holsteins provide them. They have several cows under contract right now, and strive to keep current with genetic trends while still using bulls they have confidence in. Some bulls being used in the herd currently include Jenny-Lou Mrshl Toystory-ET, Schillview Oman Gerard-ET, Ladys-Manor PL Shamrock-ET and Dream-Prairie Shadow Boxer. A special cow for the Rohms has been See-More-View Design Polly, an EX-91 2E daughter of Raggi Marshall Design-ET. Merlin says that she has had a contract every year she’s calved in, and her first daughter is a VG-87 O-Man daughter with a +2080 CTPI. Merlin and Peggy have two daughters, Kate (married to Dane), who works in the marketing division of Sargento Cheese, and Kimberly, who is currently in college studying graphic design. Merlin’s father is also still active on the farm, helping with the fieldwork for their 300 acres.
