Laura’s Holstein Letters Hey All! The Midwest Spring Show has come and gone and I feel comfortable saying it was an enjoyable time had by all. I’d also like to congratulate all the exhibitors; the animals were in great shape and looked amazing! Anna and I had a great time handing out ribbons, taking pictures, helping exhibitors in the ring and wishing my friend Kyle Natzke a BIG Happy 21st Birthday! Now that spring has almost gone it brings the activities of summer! One activity that I want to take the time to talk about is dairy judging. I want to encourage all my fellow youth to participate in their 4-H judging teams. You may wonder why I support this activity and I’d like to share with you why. First, you get the opportunity to see great animals in your area and you get to know the local farmers and hopefully make great connection with them as well. You also get to learn what a great cow looks like and after years of practice you can hopefully give your opinion on the animals at your own farm! But the main reason I support dairy judging so much is because the confidence you gain from it. You learn to be confident in making your placings, in oral reasons and in knowing what a good dairy cow looks like. You gain public speaking skills through the oral reasons and learn how to defend your opinion and how to back up your decisions. I believe dairy judging really did help me improve my public speaking (and I’d like to say helped me get an A in my speech class first semester!). If you’re looking for a place to test your skills, I’d like to enourage you to attend the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association’s Judging and Classification contest taking place at the Wisconsin State Show on Monday, July 16 at 8:30 a.m. at the Central Wisconsin State Fairgrounds in Marshfield, WI. Along with dairy judging there is showmanship and fitting contests and clinics all throughout the summer. These are all great opportunities for the youth, you get to meet new friends, learn about cows and have a lot of fun! I hope to see you all at the coming cow camp and district shows! I’d also like to wish the Wisconsin junior delegation to the National Convention good luck in your activities and contests! Wisconsin is proud to have you representing us. Laura Finley

From your President Todd Stanek Hello Wisconsin, As we have vetted through a number of our current and long-term labor needs over the past year, one area we have focused on is our staff and their responsibility within the Association. As we have assessed job descriptions, titles and employee needs, we have identified opportunities around our current structure and honed in on the role that each employee serves within this Association. One such area is the Director of Operations and its responsibility within the organization. After a fair amount of research in and out of the dairy industry, we have come to realize that the Director of Operations title is narrow in scope compared to the true responsibilities this person has. Other organizations very similar to ours appoint an Executive Director that reports directly to the Board of Directors and thus ultimately oversees everything from operations, human resources, marketing, budgeting, quality control, membership, personnel development and so forth. After a three and six month evaluation of Larry Nelson, the Executive Board recommended to the Board of Directors to appoint him this new leadership role as Chris Williams moves to a part-time basis. The Board of Directors passed the motion, however, Chris will continue to mentor and coach him during this transition. Though the true nature of the current role hasn’t changed all that much, the Executive Director title will align us similarly to others in and out of the dairy industry. Chris has managed all aspects of this role very well over the years but as we assess our current needs and position ourselves for the future, we feel this change will be beneficial in our long-term plan. Both Chris Williams and Sharon Maffei, Membership Coordinator, will report to Larry moving forward. Chris Williams will assume the Events and Financial Coordinator role in order for her to focus her time on the finer points of our events and financial needs within the Association. These are areas that she has managed very well over the years. I would like to thank Chris Williams for the twenty years of service she has performed for our Association as she has had a big part in keeping our Association financially healthy. I would also like to thank her for all her help during this transition period. While Chris will remain involved with our Association, the part-time position will allow Chris to spend more time with her grandchildren. I would like to thank her for everything she has done and congratulate Larry Nelson on his new position. Lastly, I want to wish all of our Junior Holstein delegates competing at National Convention this June the best of luck as well as Paul Buhr on his candidacy for the Region 5 National Board of Directors’ seat. BREEDER PROFILE
Windleway Holsteins Dave & Dawn Windle Family, Withee By Danielle Brown

ucked in the woods of Taylor County is the home of Dave and Dawn Windle who own and operate Windleway and Coppertop Holsteins located outside of Withee, Wis. Dave and Dawn operate the farm with their son Craig and his wife Jessie and daughter Kaya. Dave and Dawn have two other children, Jessie who works for the U.S. Postal Service and Kyle who has a woodworking business. The Windles’ journey begins in Pennsylvania where Dave and Dawn grew up. Dave’s father raised replacement heifers and when the price of heifers dropped Dave decided to start milking cows at age 16. Dave always knew he wanted to farm in some way and when the opportunity to milk his own cows appeared he took advantage of it. Although the herd started with mostly grade cows they slowly added registered cows to the herd including Dunwood Pride Bubaleah who would become one of the foundation cows for the herd. In 1991, Dave and Dawn decided to move from Pennsylvania because of the expansion of nearby towns and the rising cost of land. They wanted to relocate to a place where land was cheaper and there was less traffic and people. Initially, they were looking at either New York or Wisconsin, but couldn’t find many farms they liked in New York. After looking in the real estate section in the Lancaster Farmer magazine they found a secluded dairy farm near Withee, Wis. that fit their needs. A few years after moving in they were able to build their dream log cabin home on the farm. Today, the farm is 555 acres, with about 285 tillable acres. They plant corn, soybeans, in addition to alfalfa and grass for hay. They are able to grow all their own feed and sell some surplus as well. They feed a TMR which includes corn silage, haylage, dry corn, and a grain mix. The Windles plant and harvest all their own crops with Craig handling a majority of the fieldwork. The original tie-stall barn houses the 47 milking cows. The current BAA is 105.9 percent and the rolling herd average is 24,841 pounds of milk, 932 pounds of fat at 3.9 percent, and 750 pounds of protein at 3.1 percent. They regularly maintain a SCC under 100,000. For the Windleway Granger last 30 years the herd has been 100

percent Registered. They have been a Progressive Breeder’s Registry Herd for the past nine years and a Progressive Genetics Herd for the past 12. The tie-stall has mattresses that are bedded with sawdust. The barn is tunnel ventilated for cow comfort and the cows are let out of the barn for exercise every day. Calves are raised in calf hutches and weaned at six weeks old. The Windles’ breed for functional cows with a focus on longevity. They want cows that produce high components and milk well. They also use some high-type sires and always use bulls that are over 2.0 on udder composite. Right now the herd is composed of a variety of animals; those that do well in the show ring, high genomic females, and high production cows therefore they use a variety of sires including Snowman, Numero Uno, Absolute, and Barbwire. In the heifer shed you’ll find animals sired by Jives, O-Style, Levi, Destry, Sid, Fever, Aftershock and Million. Currently, Windleway Granger Dove VG-87 GMD is the matriarch of the most influential cow family at the farm. Descended from one of the original Registered Holsteins in the herd, Dunwood Pride Bubaleah, she has laid the foundation for Craig’s Coppertop prefix. Several years ago, Craig won a calf through the Taylor County Holstein Association and his sister traded her heifer Dove for Craig’s new calf because the new calf looked like a fancier show calf. Little did anyone know that Dove would eventually be contracted for a Shottle son named Coppertop DobermanET. Available from ABS Global, Doberman is a top 100 TPI bull known for high components and quality udders. Two of Doberman’s maternal sisters sired by Mascol, Coppertop Mascal Dani-ET VG-86 and Coppertop Mascol Dodie-ET VG-87, are also making an impact. Dani has several high genomic females sired by Snowman and O-Style. Dodie also has high genomic females in the herd by Active and is contracted for sons by Levi and O-Style. Another interest at Windleway is Red and White Holsteins. Their first red cow was Windleway Delit Montana-Red EX-91 2E who was named Supreme Champion at the Taylor County Fair in 2004. Her daughters by Paradox, September Storm, and Persia have continued to provide Red and White family members. In addition to breeding high quality cows, the Windles enjoy purchasing animals from strong cow families. They look for deep pedigreed individuals with great production traits and components. One of those purchases was DelHollow Ritzy-Red-ET VG-87, a Glen Drummond Dragon-ET daughter. Ritzy’s daughter, Windleway Advent Reece-Red VG-88 has several daughters that were merchandised. Any-Day Gibson Profit EX-90 is one of Craig’s purchases. Her Talent daughter, Coppertop Talent Patti-ET EX 92-has daughters by Mr Burns, Shaquille, and Redman. granddaughter of Patti) is currently milking 113 pounds per day as a 2year-old and is testing 4.5 percent fat. Another investment was Langs-Twin-B Elite Fudge-ET EX-90, a Durham daughter of Krull Outside Elite EX-90. The Windles are looking forward to developing this branch of the Elegance family. They also purchased Indianhead Golden Star a Goldwyn daughter of Indianhead Stardancer-ET. Golden Star has daughters by Aftershock, Sid, Million, and Sanchez on the ground. Superior cow management skills and embryo transfer work allow the Windles to merchandise several females each year in the Barron, Vernon, and Marathon County Holstein sales. They generally sell young two-yearolds as well as a few first choices. Their goal is to sell good, sound young cows that will eventually classify Very Good for their new owners. The Windles enjoy exhibiting their animals at several local fairs throughout the year including the Taylor County Fair, Clark County Fair, District 4 Holstein Show, and occasionally the Central Wisconsin State Fair. While at shows they look for potential sires to use in their herd. More

recently they have been interested in high-type bulls that fit their current breeding philosophy. The Windles have never regretted moving to Wisconsin and love the area and the people. Before making the move they were not very involved in merchandising, showing, and other parts of the Registered Holsteins business. Once moving, they formed friendships and met people that encouraged them to take advantages of the opportunities Registered Holsteins offer. Dawn’s close friend Annie Hulle of Any-Day Holsteins has served as the go-to person whenever they have had questions about flushing, advertising and merchandising. Besides farming, the Windles remain involved in a variety of agricultural organizations. Dave and Dawn are past winners of the Young Farm Family of Taylor County Award and Dawn received the Honorary Chapter Award for Gilman FFA a few years ago. They also enjoy deer hunting, especially Craig. In 2010 Craig shot the largest buck in Taylor County and one of the largest bucks in Wisconsin. Although they have no plans for expansion they hope to continue to develop high-quality individuals.

SALE REPORT Double-D Holstein Dispersal - April 12 After breeding registered cattle for nearly 50 years, Robert and Nancy Carns decided it was time to slow down a bit. Beautiful weather was on hand April 12 at their Double-D Holstein farm in Cuba City, Wis., as they dispersed their 105 Registered Holsteins for an impressive average of $2,510. A large crowd was on hand and showed their appreciation for this well-bred herd. The current herd average was at 20,108 3.9 774 3.1 622 with a classification BAA of 107.9%. Cattle were dispersed to buyers from throughout Wisconsin as well as Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Claiming top price of the day was a very promising junior 3 year old, Double-D Braveheart Majest VG-86. This Markwell Mrsh Braveheart daughter sold springing to Picston Shottle after making 20,218 3.9 779 at 2-00. Her EX-90 EX-MS Dundee dam has records to 27,300 and completes 12 generations Excellent and Very Good. The bidding was fast and furious but when the dust settled, Richard Jordan, Boise, ID placed the final bid of $7,000 to add her to his growing herd at Marion, WI. Several Red and Whites in the herd attracted a great deal of attention with the summer yearling Destry daughter, Double-D Destry Jester-Red commanding the highest price at $6,200. With a GTPI +1918 which is +177 over parent average, she sold to Andrew Sell, Watertown, WI. Her VG-87 EX-MS 20,676 Rampage dam is a potential 9th generation Excellent! A maternal sister to the Rampage, Double-D Mr Burns Jess-ET
*RC VG-88 EX-MS, sold to Matt Engel, Hampshire, IL for $5,200. This silky Mr Burns 3-year-old was projected to over 1000F and serviced to Ladd P-Red. Two fancy Red Picolo sisters from the Blackrose family were standouts in the heifer row. Double-D Picolo Revel-Red-ET, the November, 2011 model sold for $4,300 to Gary Nichols, Mt. Hope, WI, while Double-D Picolo Rebel-Red-ET, the September, 2010 model bred to Durable sold for $4,000 to Tim & Cindy Sutter, Hollandale, WI. Robert and Nancy’s granddaughter, Amanda, was serving as the herdswoman at Double-D while attending classes at UW-Platteville. She presented all of the younger heifers in the sale ring and had done an excellent job breaking them to lead during her spring break! The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. with Chris Hill, Thurmont, MD handling the auctioneering duties. 2012 Midwest National Spring Show The 2012 Midwest National Spring Show was held in Jefferson, Wis., on Saturday, April 21. Judge Mark Rueth placed 184 animals - 100 heifers and 84 cows. Taking home Grand Champion honors was the winning four-year-old and Senior Champion, Milksource Goldwn Africa-ET exhibited by Peter and Lyn Vail and Budjon Farms, Lomira, Wis. Reserve Champion was the Intermediate Champion, First Glance Talent Contest exhibited by Herman & Kathleen Hoffman of Melrose, Wis. Judge Rueth commented that the champion line-up was “a pretty impressive group. These are cows that will do well throughout the year.” He went on to say the Senior Champion “wins handily. She has an unbelievable frame and is a cow that walks so nice with a great udder. And this Intermediate Champion looks better all the time, she’s so balanced, so feminine. She’s my kind of cow and has a great future.” Reserve Senior Champion was the winning five-year-old, Pyramid Goldwyn Shimmer-ET owned by Jordan and Whitney Ebert, Algoma, Wis. Reserve Intermediate Champion was the second place Senior 3-Year-Old, Benrise Goldwyn JoJo exhibited by Budjon Farms, Lomira, Wis. Topping the heifer show were the Summer and Spring Yearling class winners. Junior Champion honors went to Stranshome Gold Alyssum-ET exhibited by Joseph, Zach, Jerome and Darian Stransky of Owatonna, Minn. Reserve Junior Champion was Duckett P Lucy-Red exhibited by Westcoast Holsteins, Chilliwack, BC. Judge Rueth commented that it was a great group of heifers for the Junior Champion line-up and all followed a pattern. The Summer Yearling “is a beautiful heifer, dairy and very feminine and clean. She has more length from head to tail and is more feminine and clean all the way through. The red heifer is a tall, upstanding heifer with beautiful uphill run.” Taking home top honors of the Junior Show was the Six-Year-Old and Older, Siemers Alisha Gold Ava-ETS exhibited by Crystal SiemersPeterman, Newton, Wis. Reserve Champion of the Junior Show went to Wilonna Talented Gay exhibited by Jordan, Riley and Walker Zoellner and Haley and Audrey Souza, Groton, SD. Judge Rueth commented “you have to really admire this senior champion, what a phenomenal cow. She excels in her mammary system and dairyness and moves freely on a great set of feet and legs. The second place cow follows with a great rear udder and is a cow that has stood the test of time.” He also congratulated the juniors on a great show and commended them for being etremely competitive in all the classes throughout the day. Junior Champion honors of the Junior Show went to Brodie Bunkelman, Edgar, Wis., and the winning Fall Yearling, Tomkins MrBurns Sizzler-Red. She got the nod over the first junior Winter Yearling, Siemers Dundee Goldn-OneET exhibited by C, J, J, J, C & L Siemers of Newton, Wis. Judge Rueth admired both heifers for their size and frame and beautiful balance and depth and spring of rib. Winning the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners at the 2012 Midwest Spring Show was Siemers Holsteins, Newton. NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Dear Holstein Breeders, As your National Directors from the Upper Midwest, we are pleased to author this joint column for Midwest Holsteins and plan to do so after each Holstein Association USA board meeting or prior to national convention moving forward. As we gear up for National Convention in Springfield, Missouri, there are a number of important issues that continue to redefine our industry. One that affects everyone who milks cows for a living is the upcoming farm bill. By a 16 to 5 vote, the Senate Ag Committee moved the farm bill to the full Senate with the Dairy Security Act serving as the dairy title. Word has it the farm bill will receive floor time in the Senate this June. This is a major development in for the Senate that has been stuck in idle. Two amendments were approved with the dairy portion in the Senate Ag Committee: continuing MILC payments through June 2013 and reviewing the market stabilization components after five years. It should also be noted that the Senate’s language also lowers the feed cost per hundredweight calculation by $1 compared to the Dairy Security Act. That would reduce the margin protections and make it less likely that the stabilization portion will activate. To read the bill go to www.ag.senate.gov/issues/farm-bill/. The vast majority of Holstein Breeders have been in favor of plan that protects margins and puts a governor on milk output in times when milk production outstrips demands AND low margins in the form of milk checks are taking place. It looks like there is a real chance that we could have a farm bill this year. If you still believe in this plan, now is the time to contact your elected officials in Washington, D.C. At this year’s 127th annual meeting, delegates will cast a vote in four national director elections. At this point there are five very qualified declared candidates for four open seats. While a member can run from the floor, it has seldom taken place in recent memory. After thorough discussion, the nominating committee made a recommendation to the Holstein USA Board of Directors that delegates have a choice of candidates... at least when it comes to an open seat. With that in mind, a proposal to amend the bylaws has been brought forth by the Association Nominating Committee and the Board of Directors. If approved by delegates, it would require at least two declared candidates for an open Regional Directorship. If two candidates do not come forward by March 1 of the election year, that Regional Director position shall become an at-large position for two terms unless an incumbent holds the position. The reason incumbents were not included in this proposal is the reality that it is difficult to find candidates to run against incumbents in a consolidating industry. Also, the fact we have term limits brings an automatic sunset to everyones’ term of service. We realize that everyone may not agree with this proposal. However, we wanted to offer the bylaw proposal so delegates can discuss, debate, and resolve this long-standing policy debate. A yes vote will ensure a choice when electing new directors while a no vote will call for the status quo and will result in some regions essentially appointing directors if only one candidate is brought forth. Delegates will make the final decision on June 29 and 30. A topic for which the Holstein USA Board of Directors has spent much time in discussion is the proposal to move genetic evaluations from USDA to a new private entity called the Dairy Data Alliance. This new group would consist of A.I. organizations, DHIAs, Processing Centers, and PDCA. After two years of deliberation, it appears the industry is coming closer to cementing a long-term agreement for genetic evaluations. The Cooperative Agreement was released May 7 and we had 29 days to comment on it. The 15-page document makes for rather dry reading. This document details the conditions that must be met so the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service can transfer the industry’s national genetic database to the private sector. Meanwhile, the second portion of the ground rules will be released in the Business Plan. The Business Plan will contain the financial and governance details. It will be the document most breeders will want to sink their teeth into. It too will be posted on industry websites when the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding releases it. Overall, the Holstein board is committed to insuring that three key principles are included in the final agreement: 1) That all animal owners will have access to genomic testing at reasonable rates; 2) That a governance structure be agreed upon by all parties and that funding methods and amounts of the new organization be fully planned before the DDA is estab16–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/June 2012

lished; 3) That other Dairy Industry members be allowed to participate in contributing and utilizing data. We believe that the present system with USDA doing genetic evaluations is the best in the world and would like to see it continue. Any new entity doing the calculations must be structured so that we can preserve the integrity of our records which we currently possess. If you are concerned about how genetic evaluations will be conducted in the future, read the document and comment. This may be the one time during our dairy careers to get this right. First crop hay is being made and on top of that the summer show season is just around the corner. Hopefully, by the time you read this you have already transferred animals to or from juniors as June 1 was the cutoff date for animals to be eligible for 2012 National Junior Holstein Shows. Any transfers that arrived after June 1 will not be eligible for National Junior Shows. So now that your transfers are completed and sent in on time... Are Your Holsteins Properly Identified for the Show Season? Is your animal officially identified with Holstein ear tags? Check your registration certificate - if the animal’s primary form of ID is Holstein ear tags (no photo or sketches printed on the back of the registration paper), the animal must possess both Official Holstein ear tags, one in each ear, for her to meet Holstein USA Tag ID requirements and be considered officially identified. If one (or both) of the animal’s ear tags is missing, please call to order a replacement, and have the animal tagged when it arrives at the show. Place your replacement tag order well in advance of your show, so there is time for the order to be processed and shipped. If your animal only has ear tags listed on her registration certificate, but is not tagged with that identification, show management has no way of verifying the identification of the animal. Visit www.holsteinusa.com/animal_id/tag_id.html to learn more about Holstein Association USA’s Tag ID program. Some exhibitors prefer not to have ear tags in their show animals. If you do not want to tag your show animals, simply send your original registration certificate, along with photos or sketches of the animal(s) to the Holstein Association USA office to be officially printed on the animal’s registration paper as their official method of identification (referred to as a “re-ID”). This can be done on animals of any age and should be done if you do not intend to tag your animals with its Holstein ear tags. There is no charge for this service. Finally, please have the original registration papers in-hand, with the correct ownership printed on them, when you arrive at the show. Photocopies, sale catalog papers, or website print outs are not acceptable replacements for the animal’s actual registration certificate. SALE REPORT Siemers Holsteins Spring Showcase - March 30 Excitement and enthusiasm were in the air at the Great Northern Sales Arena on March 30 as the Siemers Holsteins Spring Showcase commenced! The line-up was phenomenal, the crowd overflowing and the bidding active as 74 consignments from across the country and 32 consignments from Siemers Holsteins paraded through the ring. The selection ranged from top of the line genomics to awesome show prospects to exciting choice of flushes and elite embryo packages. The prices were steady throughout the sale with a final tally revealing a $11,208 averge on 106 live lots and choices. The sale began with a generous donation by Trans-Ova Genetics. An IVF cycle with reverse sorted semen was struck off for $1,300 to Mike Rammer, Sheboygan, Wis., with the proceeds benefitting the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Tony Brey, Sturgeon Bay, Wis., paid $700 for the IVF cycle with conventional semen and these proceeds will go to the Manitowoc County Junior Holstein Association. Mike & Lori Propson, Valders, Wis., donated 50% of the proceeds from their embryo package to the Manitowoc Junior Dairy Bowl team which will be representing Wisconsin at the 2012 National Holstein Convention. This package was purchased by Marlene & Wally Siemers for $2,550. Heading the list of nineteen consignments that sold for $20,000 or more was Lot 1, BAFZBW Shamrock Tracey-ET. This Shamrock with a GTPI +2482 +2223M +100F +60P +929NM +8.4PL +2.83T sold with contract interest from CRV, Semex, TAG and Accelerated Genetics as well as embryo contracts from GenElite and AMS. In February the group took a county one-day bus trip to Milksource Genetics in Kaukauna and in March took the overnight spring tour and visited great herds in Wisconsin and Iowa. Twin-B Dairy will once again be hosting the Summer Event Sale on July 26. The Marathon County Holstein Breeders will also be selling cheesecurds at Athens Fair and the Edgar Steam Show in August. The Marathon Sale will be held September 8 and the annual awards banquet will be held in October. The group is also beginning preparations for the 2013 State Holstein Convention which will be held at the Stoney Creek Inn in Rothschild. We welcome all of you to come and join us for that event.

I decided on UW-Madison based on its wide-spread reputation as one of the best Dairy Science programs in the nation. I also liked the atmosphere at the athletic events, especially being in Camp Randall. What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable college experience was being able to represent UW-Madison at the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge. It was a great experience where I was able to network with both fellow students and professionals in the industry while being able to put to use all of the knowledge I have gained while at UW. What has been your favorite course? While I have enjoyed all of my dairy science classes thoroughly, I truly enjoyed taking LSC 360, Radio Communications. It was a great experience to try something I was not familiar with and taught me how to write radio pieces, as well as, being able to record some of my own radio shows. What are your future career goals? I am currently seeking employment and plan to work within the dairy industry with my interests lying in the reproduction field. Long term plans include returning to own and operate our family farm.

On April 17, 2012 a documentary company called The Journal, working with Holstein Association USA filmed a production to be televised about dairy farming and the benefits of the Holstein Association and its youth programs. The filming featured several of my cows that I will be receiving awards for at the National Convention this year. This is a day I will never forget!

First, we would like to thank the Marathon County Holstein Breeders for sponsoring this page. The county association has many activities throughout the year to raise funds to promote Registered Holsteins from Marathon County. Nor-Way-Pete Farms is owned by Andy, Mary & Chad Peterson. Andy is the third generation on the farm. He and his son Chad farm about 950 acres of owned and rented land in eastern Marathon County near Wittenberg. All feed except for a custom protein mix is produced on the farm. The herd is comprised of 75% Nor-Way-Pete prefixed animals and 25% owned by Four-of-a-Kind Partners. Andy is part owner of Four-of-a-Kind along with Dan Day, Rick Seefeldt and the herd manager, Dan Cnossen.

The current rolling herd average on 3x milking is 30,651M 3.9 1182F 3.0 909P with 252 cows on test. The most recent BAA is 108.7%. We currently have five EX-94 homebred cows in the herd. Our breeding philosophy is simple: Always select for high udder and feet and leg composites. Then breed strength to angular and vice versa. We have bred or developed five cows with over 300,000 lifetime and 44 over 200,000 lifetime - all in the last 10 years. A cow that is too angular usually doesn’t last and a cow that is too round doesn’t milk. Dairy Strength is the key. We use mostly daughter-proven high type sires. A few special pedigreed genomic bulls are also used but we prefer to stay the course and breed a consistent type pattern that we can be proud of and have cows that excel in production. The milk check still is how we pay the majority of our bills. We like to show locally up to the state level. We are firm supporters of our District Show and feel the District Show concept allows any breeder to compete. Cows fed a TMR do not stay rail-thin for very long so we are always aware of the small window of opportunity to have our cows in their “wedding clothes.” Bulls that have made a major impact in our herd would be Emory, Roy, Best, Highlight, Shottle and, of course, Durham. Several of our high Excellent cows are Durham daughters and we are still using him to make the special kind. Current sires of our best young cows are Sanchez, Million, Alexander, Atlas and Gabor. Wisconsin Cow Recognized as 2011 Star of the Breed Hazel-Bush Flap Flower has claimed the title of Holstein Association USA’s 2011 Star of the Breed. This award is given annually to one Holstein cow that not only excels in the showring, but is an exceptional milk producer as well. Flower was bred by Hazel Bush Farms, Inc., of Rice Lake, Wis., and is owned by 22-year-old Beth Nelson of Blair, Wis. Flower was born on July 29, 2006, and is sired by My-John Free FlapET, out of Hazel-Bush Delaware Dixie. She made an outstanding record this past year, calving in at 4-05, producing 59,160 pounds of milk with 4.2 percent fat (2,471 pounds) and 2.9 percent protein (1,744 pounds) in 365 days. Nelson attributes the cow’s impressive milk production to her large capacity and “queen-size” appetite. She is currently classified EX-92 EEEEE, scoring a 50 in both rear udder height and width. Beth purchased Flower as one of her first Registered Holstein project animals at the 2007 Barron County Holstein Sale, as an eight-month-old heifer. She showed her at county, district and state shows as a heifer, but it wasn’t until Flower calved in that she began to catch judges’ eyes in the showring. As a Junior Three-Year-Old, she placed first at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair, and in 2010 was the Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin and Honorable Mention Junior All-American Four-Year-Old. This past year, Flower was the third place Five-Year-Old at both the Midwest Spring National Holstein Show and the Mid-East Fall National Holstein Show. Nelson has flushed and bred the cow to several high type bulls, but has only been successful in getting two heifers thus far, a pair of November 2010 daughters by Gen-Mark Stmatic Sanchez. Flower is currently bred to Crackholm Fever-ET, due in early June. Beth says their goal for Flower’s upcoming lactation are to try and get some more daughters from her, possibly through in vitro fertilization. If she calves in well, she plans to show her again this summer and fall. Beth attended the University of Wisconsin Farm and Industry Short Course and now works full-time with her parents, Lee and Becky, at their dairy farm. They milk 150 cows twice a day in a double-10 parabone parlor, the herd primarily comprised of Holsteins, approximately 20 percent of which are registered. The cattle are housed in sand bedded freestalls, with a pack barn for fresh cows, and their ration consists of a TMR with an ample amount of dry hay. The farm’s rolling herd average

currently sits at 24,500 pounds of milk, maintaining a 98,000 SCC, which has earned them several milk quality awards. Beth enjoys exhibiting cattle at shows and regularly attends her district and state shows, along with the Midwest Fall National Holstein Show, World Dairy Expo, and the Mideast Fall National Holstein Show. To be eligible for the Star of the Breed award, a cow must place in the top five in her class at a National Holstein Show, be in a herd enrolled in the TriStar program and have an official classification score. Once the eligible cows are determined, the following calculation is used to decide the award recipient: Combined ME Fat and Protein + Age Adjusted Classification Score x (Breed Average ME Combined Fat & Protein/Breed Average Age Adjusted Classification Score).

lmost seven years ago, Nova Holsteins, the Kamm family of Baldwin, were looking for a mult-purpose cow that would influence the future of their herd. “We were looking for a cow to hang our hat on,” said Lance Kamm. “A cow from a high-type family that had an outcross pedigree and numbers. It worked out better than we could have dreamed.” Nova Holsteins and Friends purchased UFM-DUBS Eroy-ET VG-87 GMD DOM at the Snapshots of Starmark Sale in Ohio. They were attracted to the total package that Eroy offered including her unique sire stack. In fact, Eroy and two-time World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Harvue Roy Frosty EX-96 share the same sire stack; Roylane Jordan X Rich-Ro Mark Sam-ET. Eroy, herself is an impressive animal with her most recent record being at four years and six months and 365 days: 40,330 4.4% 1789 2.9% 1162. In addition she has produced over 129,380 pounds of milk, 5738 pounds of fat and 4053 pounds of protein in her lifetime to date. But, it truly is her ability to transmit to her offspring that really speaks for itself. According to Lance, Eroy consistently transmits type even when mated to bulls that have lower type values. Her daughters are strong, powerful,
framey cows with great health traits and outstanding components, especially fat. Her daughters also classify very well. To date she has five Excellent and 19 Very Good daughters and 24 of her 25 daughters scored Very Good as 2-year-olds. Her milking daughters include animals sired by O-Man, Allegro, Goldwyn, Shottle, Marion, Damion, Elegant, and Advent. There are many more daughters to calve as well including heifers sired by Million, Durham, Man-O-Man, Sanchez, Mac, and Palermo. Some of Eroy’s most famous daughters are the “Fab Five”. These five Goldwyn sisters are the oldest Eroy daughters that carry the Nova-TMJ prefix; Golden Era-ETS EX-90 (now owned by Coyne Farms, NY), Golden Erin-ET VG-89 (now owned by Dylan Ryan & Kyle Natzke), Golden Eden-ET VG-88, Golden Echo-ETS VG-88, and Golden Edie-ETS VG-87. This was one of the magical matings and Eroy has 12 daughters by Goldwyn and the Kamms plan to possibly flush her to Goldwyn again. Other impressive daughters include the milking Shottle daughters and exciting prospects include the Man-O-Man heifers that are due this summer. There was only one daughter from Eroy’s flush to Durham, but they are excited about her calving in this fall. Lance’s favorite daughters, though, are the Damion daughters Nova-TMJ Damion Essence-ET EX-91 and Nova-TMJ Damion Ella-ET EX-90. These massive cows with great feet and legs have beautiful udders and a great example of Eroy’s transmitting ability. These cows are projected to make about 35,000 pounds of milk with 4.7 percent fat and 3.5 percent protein this lactation. One of the “Fab Five”, Nova-TMJ Golden Erin-ET VG-89 was sold as a first choice in the 2006 National Holstein Convention Sale to Golden Oaks Farms of Illinois. After purchasing her she had a Colby heifer calf, Golden-Oaks Colby Exception, who was sold in the Dodgerama and her Baxter calf, Golden-Oaks Baxter Erica-ET was sold to a syndicate of Canadian buyers and has several high genomic offspring in Canada. The Natzke and Ryan families sold almost all the eggs Erin could produce especially after genomics hit the scene and Erin went VG-89 in her first lactation. Erin was flushed to Armitage, Sebastian, AltaIota, Sanchez, O-Style, Observer, and Shamrock. They did put a few embryos in here and there that have resulted in some exciting animals. Almost all the females have genomic tested well above parent average and rank high in both the U.S. and Canada, which has created more interest in the family. Erin’s Sanchez daughter, Ryan-Crest Sanz Extacy-ET, VG-87, was nominated Junior All-American Fall Calf and Fall Yearling. More recently, she was the 2nd place Senior 2-year-old at the Midwest National Spring Show this spring. They flushed Extacy as a virgin heifer and sold 17 embryos out of her then. They have also merchandised a number of live daughters from Erin including Ryan-Crest Exotic-ET (Observer daughter) who sold for $30,000 in the Summer Event sale last summer and RyanCrest Srock Exciting-ET for $45,000 in the March Madness Sale to Siemers Holsteins. Ryan-Crest Arm Exquisite-ET (Erin’s only Armitage daughter) was recently sold in the Regancrest Command Performance Sale for $23,000. She is the number 4 Armitage GTPI (+2309) Armitage daughter in the U.S. and number six GLPI (+3138) Armitage daughter in Canada. Another Shamrock daughter, Ryan-Crest Shamrock Exacto comes in at just under 2400 GTPI. Many others have purchased animals from the family and seen success including Josh Miller of Glenwood City. Josh purchased a group of Shottle embryos from Nova-TMJ Golden Edie-ETS two months before the “Fab Five” gained popularity. Those embryos resulted in Nova Shottle Evelyn-ET VG-86, who is among the top 10 GTPI Shottles in the breed. Evelyn has daughters by Colt-P, Iota, Ravish, Windbrook, and Bookem. Her daughter, Miller-FF Bookem Esther-ET has a GTPI value of +2550. She also has embryos by S-S-I Domain Lithium-ET, Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul-ET, and Seagull-Bay Supersire-ET and the Millers exported her last 24 embryos. Not only did Nova and Friends find a cow “to hang their hat on”, many others have found success with this consistently transmitting family. “The purchase of Eroy seven years ago was the single most important purchase we have made,” comments Lance. “We project she will be influencing our herd heavily for the next 15 years.”

Genex TOYSTORY Bull Produces World Record Setting 2 Millionth Unit of Semen SHAWANO, Wis.: 1HO07235 TOYSTORY, a Genex Cooperative, Inc. bull recognized by dairy producers around the globe, has reached a level of semen production never before seen in the cattle artificial insemination (A.I.) industry. Holstein Association USA Recognizes 2012 Herds of Excellence Brattleboro, Vt.: Seven U.S. Registered Holstein® breeders have earned the distinction of being named 2012 Holstein Association USA Herds of Excellence. The award was created to pay tribute to breeders who have bred and raised cattle that are consistently performing at the highest levels for them. To be recognized with this honor, herds must be 25 percent above breed average Mature Equivalent (ME) for milk, fat and protein; have classified within the last year and have an actual average classification score of 83 points or higher; have at least 70 percent of the herd homebred; and be enrolled in the Association's TriStar production records program.
Four Herds recognized from Wisconsin Hilrose Holsteins, Joseph Brantmeier, Sherwood 5-Year Honoree 87.5% Homebred Average Classification Score: 86.1 ME Averages: 34,043M 1,254F 976P Hilrose Holsteins is managed by Joe Brantmeier, with his sons, Andy and Jeff. They milk 110 cows in their tiestall barn twice a day. The herd participates in Holstein COMPLETE, using Holstein tags with EASY IDTM for registration. They have Joe, Chris, Jeff, Bonnie, Andy & Ashley Brantmeier received Progressive Breeders Registry honors for 22 years, and Hilrose is one of two herds that has been named a Herd of Excellence five years running. The Brantmeiers enjoy breeding cows with good type that live long, productive lives. This emphasis on longevity is apparent, as they have bred over 30 cows producing more than 200,000 pounds of lifetime milk. When selecting service sires, strong emphasis is placed on type, especially udder composite, with high components. They are incorporating some genomic young bulls into their breeding program, but spread their risk by not using any one bull too heavily. Recent service sires include Comestar LauthorityET, KHW Elm-Park Acme-ET, Mountfield SSI Dcy Mogul-ET, Mr Chassity Gold Chip-ET, and Siemers Toys Hero 9701-ET. In the near future, they have plans to start using some sons of Sandy-Valley Bolton-ET. Joe feels the number of cows they have allows them to be diverse and work with cow families in different ways, capitalizing on an animal’s strengths while improving her weaknesses. They made their first venture into some in vitro work this year with Hilrose Rubens Patsy EX-92 2E GMD, and have some calves by Fustead Goldwyn Guthrie-ET that they are extremely pleased with. Patsy was the Reserve All-American Fall Yearling in 2005 and has already proven she can pass on those show-winning genetics her family is known for. Her daughter, Hilrose Baltimor PennyET was recently the second place Fall Yearling at the 2012 Midwest Spring National Holstein Show. Another young cow they are excited about is Wilstar Alexander Deanna, recently fresh with her first calf. Deanna is a red carrier daughter of Golden-Oaks St Alexander-ET with a +2066 GTPI, who they have recently flushed to Sandy-Valley Colt P-Red-TW. The Brantmeiers strive for a diversified operation; their Registered Holsteins and the marketing opportunities they have provided, through both live cattle and embryos, as well as some cash crops they grow, provide a more stable income for their farming enterprise and allow it to support multiple families. Joe enjoys day to day life on the farm and especially the opportunity it gives him to work alongside his family. Along with Andy and Jeff, Joe and Chris have a daughter, Sara.
Ever-Green-View Holsteins, Thomas J. Kestell, Waldo 2-Year Honoree 76.1% Homebred Average Classification Score: 84.1 ME Averages: 35,553M 1,371F 1,067P Tom Kestell has been in the Registered Holstein business for over 50 years, dairying on his own since he graduated from college. Today, he maintains a herd of 85 to 100 milking cows, with 50 to 60 dry donors which 28–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/June 2012

are flushed to produce embryos for the export market. The milking herd is housed in a tiestall barn with comfort stalls, and they have been milking three times per day for over 20 years. Dry cows and heifers are housed in freestall barns with waterbeds. Tom feels strongly, “if you take Top: Jennifer Benzschawel, Tom & Gen Kestell, care of the land it will Julie Kestell; Bottom: Chris & Joel Kestell take care of your cows and you.” He says, “We believe in the basics: set up a good program with feeding, breeding and cow comfort as a priority. Also, be willing to make changes as situations change.” Kestell strives to breed cows that produce milk from sound udders with high components. He has a bias toward high milk bulls, without losing sight of type. Sires being used in the herd include a mix of genomic and proven bulls including De-Su Observer-ET, Ensenada Taboo PlanetET, Flevo Genetics Snowman-ET, Jenny-Lou Mrshal Toystory-ET, Mountfield SSI Dcy Mogul-ET and Mr Chassity Gold Chip-ET. The cow that has been most influential in Kestell’s herd is one many will recognize - Ever-Green-View Elsie-ET EX-92 GMD DOM, a cow family Tom has been working with for almost 30 years. Prominent members in recent years include international TPI sensation Snowman, and milk production champion Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET. One of his current favorites is an Elsie granddaughter, Ever-Green-View Elegance, by O Man. Classified EX-92, she made a 305-day record of over 52,000 pounds of milk with 2,300 pounds of fat and 1,600 pounds of protein. Elegance completes five generations of homebred, 50,000 pound, Gold Medal Dams, classified Excellent with Excellent mammary systems! The future for this family is bright, with two Elegance daughters Tom is particularly proud of; Etal-ET, by Toystory, classified VG-87 EX-MS with over 40,000 pounds of milk as a two year old, and Elby-ET, sired by Colby, also scored VG-87, who made over 38,000 pounds of milk in her first lactation. Kestell’s progressive attitude and breeding program have led to EverGreen-View being recognized as a Progressive Genetics Herd for 20 years, and earning Progressive Breeders Registry honors for 12 years. The herd is on Holstein COMPLETE, classifies regularly, and uses official Holstein ear tags for identification. In closing, Tom says, “We hope we can have an impact around the world with our genetics, and that future generations can build and improve upon what we have started.” Tom and his wife, Gin, look forward to their sons, Joel and Chris, and their families, continuing in the business that they have both enjoyed and prospered in.
B-Long Holsteins, Bruce & Brenda Long, New London 5-Year Honoree 98.2% Homebred Average Classification Score: 83.7 ME Averages: 34,312M 1,204F 992P At B-Long Holsteins, the Long family milks 55 Registered Holsteins twice a day. Bruce and Brenda officially started B-Long Holsteins in June 1990, but their Registered Holstein experience dates back long before that. Many of their cows go back to two of Bruce’s 4-H projects he acquired Bruce, Bret and Brenda Long at 14 years old, along with some that trace back to Brenda’s family’s farm. The Longs rely on the “4 C’s” as their keys to success: “cows” (good Registered Holsteins), “comfort,” “consumption” (high quality feed), and “consistency” are all fundamentals that allow them to achieve high levels of production with strong type, year after year. Bruce and Brenda were recognized as the 2006 Holstein USA Distinguished Young Breeders, have been named a Progressive Genetics Herd for 16 years, and this is their fifth year in a row as a Herd of Excellence.

Cows that are built to last are the goal of the Long’s breeding program. They strive for animals possessing great overall capacity, with desirable udders, sound feet and legs, high milk production and pounds of components. Service sires recently used include Crackholm Fever-ET, Fustead Goldwyn Guthrie-ET, Gen-Mark Stmatic Sanchez, Gillette Windbrook-ETS, and Lirr Drew Dempsey. Developing cows with a profitable combination of production and type, and passing those qualities to future generations of cattle is the goal of many breeders, and B-Long is no exception. One notable brood cow in their herd is B-Long BW Grapefruit, a VG-86 GMD DOM who produced over 39,000 pounds of milk, with 1,481 pounds of fat and 1,254 pounds of protein after calving in at 1-11. They have three Grapefruit descendants in the herd today that are exceptional performers. B-Long Tootsy Pop-ET, classified EX-91, was the fifth place Four-Year-Old at the 2011 Midwest Spring National Holstein Show, made a three-year-old record of 45,250 pounds of milk, with 1,718 pounds of fat and 1,466 pounds of protein, and carries a CTPI of +1853. B-Long Brown Sugar-ET, EX-92 2E, produced 35,000 pounds of milk and over 1,600 pounds of fat as a five year old, and B-Long Cream, EX-90 2E, produced over 34,000 pounds of milk and 1,500 pounds of fat as a four year old. Bruce and Brenda have three sons; Bryant, Brandon and Bret. Bret attended the University of Wisconsin Farm and Industry Short Course, receiving his Dairy Farm Management Certificate, and is now working home on the farm. Bryant and Brandon are in college pursuing degrees outside of agriculture, but both help on the farm when they are home.
Doorco Farms, Daniel Vandertie, Brussels 2-Year Honoree 100% Homebred Average Classification Score: 87.3 ME Averages: 32,413M 1,202F 952P Doorco Farms has been home to Registered Holsteins since the mid-1940’s, when Dan Vandertie’s parents, Wilferd and Emily, started the operation. Dan and his wife Julie were married in 1987 and took over the operation at that time. Today, the couple has three children Karlee, Bridget, Austin, Julie & Dan Vandertie who are all very involved in every aspect of the farm; Karlee, 21, is currently attending college and helps when she is home; Bridget, 17, and Austin, 12, help on a daily basis with everything from feeding and milking to fieldwork. The family milks 40 cows twice a day in their tiestall barn. Doorco has been recognized as a Progressive Breeders Registry Herd for 37 years and a Progressive Genetics Herd for seven years. They are a Holstein COMPLETE herd. Dan employs a simple breeding strategy on the farm, with a goal of making large cows with strong front ends, that possess great udders and a will to milk. They use a combination of genomic and daughter proven bulls on the farm, with genomic information being “one more tool” Vandertie uses to select sires for the next generation of cattle. Some bulls he has used recently include Charlesdale Superstition-ET, Ked Outside Jeeves-ET, Ladys-Manor Pl Shamrock-ET, Mountfield SSI Dcy Mogul-ET and Wabash-Way Explode-ET. Over 80 percent of the herd can be traced back to one cow – Doorco Duster Albany EX-90 GMD DOM. Many individuals from this family have scored Excellent and made great production records. She had three daughters herself; an EX-92 3E GMD DOM STBVQ Rubens-ET with over 200,000 pounds of lifetime milk; an EX-92 2E GMD DOM Regancrest Elton Dante-ET daughter with a five-year-old record over 42,800 pounds of milk; and an EX-92 daughter of Altagen-I MerchantET with a best record at 4-04 of 40,360 pounds of milk. The family is continuing on as an integral part of the Doorco herd with Doorco Toystory Natalie-ET EX-91 as one of the recent shining stars; she has exciting daughters by Macomber O-Man Bogart and Super, just to name a few. The Vanderties feel that teamwork has been critical to the success of their operation, with all family members involved, along with having a strong relationship with their veterinarian and nutritionist. They enjoy being a small family farm, and the camaraderie with other Registered breeders in their area.

WI Holstein National DJM and YDJM Spotlight The JACs sat down with our National DJM and YDJM candidates after the 2012 WI Holstein Junior Convention to learn more about our top youth. Good luck at Nationals!
Amelia Cooper National DJM Candidate I am the 20 year old daughter of Bill and Pam Cooper and younger sister to Andi, Vicki, and Juli Cooper. I have grown up on our Registered Holstein Moss-Oak Farm, where we are a family operation. I have been showing since the age of five and have had the opportunity to show on the district, county, state, and national levels. This is when my Wisconsin Holstein Association participation started but it really took off when I turned eight years old and could actually become a member of the Junior Holstein Association and 4-H. What Holstein Association activity has benefitted you the most thus far as a Junior member? My participation in the Association started through working with my animals on the farm. I have become very passionate for the Holstein cow and I believe this is what keeps me so active in the WI Holstein Association. In addition I have met many people whom have become good friends and possible contacts or even co-workers through my years in the association, and I would like to continue to make these connections through my work with the Association.
Stephanie Nagel National DJM Candidate My name is Stephanie Nagel and I am originally from Valders, Wisconsin, which is in Manitowoc County. My parents are Paul and Tammie Nagel and I grew up on my parent’s 55-cow Holstein farm, Nagels Home of Holsteins with my three siblings. Since I enjoyed working on the farm and with the animals, I joined the Junior Holstein Association back in 2001. I started out showing animals at our county fair and became more involved every year. I later decided to invest in my own animals that I now breed and show. Currently I am a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville pursuing a degree in Animal Science with a Dairy and business emphasis. Who is your role model in the Dairy Industry? I would have to say my father; Paul Nagel. He is a hard working individual that runs our entire home farm. He knows everything from fixing around the farm, crops, animal health, and finances. I just admire how he gets all this work done and makes time for the family as well. I would also have to add in there my Holstein advisors over the years. Both Brenda Meyer and Cindy Breunig really motivated me and pushed me to become more active over the years. Donating your time and wisdom have really helped me along the way!
Kyle Natzke National DJM Candidate I am the 20-year-old son of Tim and Barb Natzke, of Fond du Lac with an older sister, Kristin Olson. I have been active in Junior Holsteins my whole life, as I grew up to love Junior Holsteins and participating in activities such as Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, and Showing at District, State, and National Shows. I graduated from the UW-Madison Farm and Industry Short Course with a dairy herd management emphasis. While on campus I was active in Badger Dairy Club, assisted with the Badger Dairy Club Sale, and a member of the Dairy Judging team. Junior member? There is a lot I’ve gained by being a member of Junior Holsteins. One thing I have gained is great friendships that will last a lifetime. Also by showing cattle and participating in Jeopardy and Dairy Bowl, I have learned that hard work and dedication will go a long way and pay off in the end.
Kayla Wright National DJM Candidate Hello dairy enthusiasts! I’m Kayla Wright, the 20-year-old daughter of Mark and Linda Wright and I hail from Watertown, Wisconsin in Jefferson County. I currently reside on a 30acre, 200 head of Registered Holstein Dairy Farm with my parents and younger sister. I have been active in Junior Holsteins since I was 5 years old, when I began showing. I became active when I was 5 years old when my grandmother gave me a premature calf and there was no end in sight. Showing and judging have been the highlight activities during my junior member years and I hope to continue these activities in the future. Who is your role model in the Dairy Industry? My role models in the Dairy Industry are my parents. They are the ones who began my involvement in the industry and I have no end in sight. With their help, guidance, and passion for the Holstein Industry I was able to begin mine at a young age and hope to continue promoting the industry to future junior members. My parents taught me that hard work, responsibility, and dedication result in achievement. I am proud that my parents began my involvement in the Holstein industry where I made lifelong friends, developed my own herd of cattle, and now promote the industry to future members.
Katherine Larson National YDJM Candidate My name is Katherine Larson and my hometown is Viroqua, which is in Vernon County. My parents are Kevin and Julie Larson. I joined the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association when I was seven years old. My first project animal, Lar-Lan Integrity Julie, was a gift from my parents. She was the beginning of my Junior Holstein project and her daughters, granddaughters and now great-granddaughters have given me a lot of show animals. I am showing her great-granddaughter this summer and hopefully her March calf. I became active in the Association by starting with Dairy Bowl, Cow Camp and the speaking contest. I have been attending the Junior Holstein Conventions since I was ten years old. Who or what keeps you active and why do you remain so active in the WI Holstein Association? I really like working with Holsteins. I also like attending activities that have everything to do with cows and being with other Jr. Holstein members that like cows as much as I do. I don’t have many close friends in school that like cows, so being in Jr. Holstein gives me those friends with similar interests.
Elizabeth Sarbacker National YDJM Candidate I’m Elizabeth Sarbacker from Dane County. My parents are Tom and Vicki Sarbacker from Verona. Our farm consists of 400-acres and a total of 140 milking cows. I have been a member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association for as long as I can remember. I followed my four older brothers to all the events and watched them being involved in many areas of the Junior Holstein Association. I have fond memories of having fun watching them, and then

becoming actively involved myself because I really enjoy showing cattle and dairy judging. Who is your role model in the Dairy Industry? My dad is my role model because he is the reason I have this opportunity to be involved in the Dairy ndustry. As I watch my dad on the farm, I understand that it takes a lot of time and hard work to have a successful business. He guides me with decisions and makes suggestions to help me. I look up to him because he supports me and encourages me to get involved and try new things. My brothers have also been a positive influence on me as they help and assist me.
Jordan Siemers National YDJM Candidate Hi, I’m Jordan Siemers from Manitowoc County and the 15-year-old son of Dan and Janina Siemers. I became active in Junior Holstein with the encouragement of my family and coaches to go out and try new things. I found it to be a lot of fun because I really enjoy talking to others about cows. I participate in dairy bowl, dairy jeopardy, dairy judging and speaking contests and really enjoy working on the farm, showing cattle and playing football. What Holstein Association activity has benefitted you the most thus far as a Junior member? The activities that have benefited me the most are the speaking contest and dairy bowl. Dairy bowl

Nicole Wright National YDJM Candidate My name is Nicole Wright. I am the 16-year-old daughter of Mark and Linda Wright, Watertown, where we milk 100 Registered Holsteins in Jefferson County along with my older sister Kayla. I am a sophomore at Watertown High School where I am a High Honor student and am secretary of the FFA chapter. I have been involved in the Junior Holstein Association since I can remember. Growing up on my family’s dairy farm has made me fall in love with Holsteins as long as with some other breeds. Being involved for so long I have made many friends and have developed a large responsibility. Who is your role model in the Dairy Industry? I would say I have two role models in the dairy industry. The first would be my sister Kayla. She has made some pretty large boots to fill in my family. I want to accomplish as much as she did for my mom and dad. They don’t get off the farm much and it makes me so happy seeing them so proud of us. The second role model I have is Alice in Dairyland. Every year I try to meet her and get an auto-graphed postcard. I want to be able to travel and speak about the importance of the dairy cow in everyone’s life.
