Congratulations to Gigi’s owners, Bur-Wall Holsteins, Brooklyn. Watch for more in our April issue. S Congratulations to Bart and Brittany Schreiber, Athens, on the birth of their son Brett Galen. Brett weighed 6 lbs. 6 oz. and was 18.5 inches long. He joins big sister Bailey.

ood people and a great herd of cows headline the crew that is Hillpine Holsteins and the Mark and Julie Lauber family of Union Grove, Wis. One of the few remaining Registered Holstein farms in the greater Racine County area, this humble crew has developed a great herd of cows that perform in the barn and on the tanbark at any level. The Laubers have been in the cow business since 1900, but did not incorporate Registered Holsteins until the 1940s. At that time Mark’s father Norman purchased his first registered animals and had a 35-cow barn. In 1987, the Lauber’s built their current tie-stall barn, which holds 60 cows. Hillpine is nestled on 300 acres, with 170 owned and the rest rented. Hillpine Holsteins is a family business across the board. Even though Mark still owns the farm, his kids Matt, Ryan and Megan own some of the cows and all play a crucial role in the day-to-day care of the farm. Mark definitely takes on a ‘behind the scenes’ role as the catch-all for the ‘dirty work,’ and son Matt, a UW-River Falls grad, leads the efforts in feeding and field work. Son Ryan, a UW-Farm and Industry Short Course grad, helps with caring for the show cattle and daily chores. Daughter Megan is currently in school at UW-Madison for dairy science with an ag business certificate, but makes it home frequently to check on the baby calves. Mark’s wife Julie grew up showing some, but has worked off the farm for 15 years as a registered nurse. In addition to Mark’s wife and kids, his brothers are frequent visitors to the farm as well. Dennis is now retired, and has always been very involved in the showing aspect of the herd. He enjoys Holstein people, and still buys cows here and there. Mark’s brother Tom is responsible for the cow’s barn signs and helps driving tractor. Finally, Scott helps out on weekends, too. Even though the brothers have had jobs off the farm, they continue to be drawn back for love of the dairy farm. Also involved are cousin Maddy Hansen, and Olivia Spaight, a family friend. Both of these ladies are greatly involved on the farm and show with the Laubers at the county fair and Wisconsin State Fair. The crew at Hillpine might be one of the few dairies left in the area, but in the early days they were fortunate to work with Gene Nelson and the crew at Gray View Farms just down the road. Mark complemented Gene as being a “one of a kind guy” that helped his kids catch the show bug. Now, his grandchildren are involved at Hillpine and have taken their own love to showing calves. The Lauber family is truly grateful for the opportunity to get youth involved on the dairy that don’t live on the farm, and they enjoy every minute mentoring the kids who have their grandpa’s drive to show Registered Holsteins. When they put it all together, the Hillpine herd maintains an outstanding

RHA on 2x milking of 26,208 pounds milk, with 3.67% 962 fat and 3.09% and 811 protein, with no rBST. The herd BAA is 110.7 with 16 Excellent, 43 Very Good and only 6 Good Plus cows. In the last five years they have transitioned to a true TMR, and have utilized Garrett DeBruin to manage their ration. Prior to the change, they were top dressing feed five times a day. The change has been a labor saver while allowing some of the same essential feed to be incorporated into the ration, which is heavy in corn silage and baylage. The Laubers have all of their young stock on site, with baby calves starting in hutches until eight weeks of age. Calves are fed whole milk with additives, and transition to super hutches for four weeks after they are weaned. Heifers are bred to calve as close to two years of age as possible, depending mostly on their size. When it comes to the barn, cows are let out on a dirt lot for a few hours each day for exercise. The Laubers have had rubber flooring on the barn driveway for nearly ten years, and are glad to have the extra comfort for people and the cows. While the Laubers have done a great job feeding their cows, the breeding has been even better. One of Mark’s favorite bulls of the past is Triple Threat, and at one time there were 30 of them on the farm that added a lot of type to the herd. While the primary focus is on selecting high type sires, health traits and Immunity Plus bulls have been a part of the discussion lately as well. Mating decisions are typically a group discussion, as the Laubers like to collect input from all family members to make the best choice possible. Bulls now in the tank include Doorman, Armani, Gold Chip and Meridian. The Laubers did not use as much Atwood, but have some really

nice young Aftershock daughters in the pens. Also in the heifer pens are some fancy daughters by Brokaw, Chelios, Rainy and Windbrook. The Laubers also have a few milking Windbrook daughters that look really nice. The summer of 2015 was a pretty special one for the crew at Hillpine in the show ring. It started at the competitive District 6 Holstein Show, where Hillpine B Anya-ET was first winter yearling and Junior Champion of the Junior and Open Shows. The Laubers took Junior Best Three Female honors, had second place junior two-year-old, first junior threeyear-old, second senior three-year-old, and a first place five-year-old that sealed the deal for Premier Breeder and Exhibitor honors. With Megan at the halter of Anya, the duo continued to have a successful summer and fall, and Anya was named Junior All-American Winter Yearling for 2015. Anya is a Brokaw daughter of Butlerview Aftersh April-ET, a max EX-92 second lactation Aftershock that Ryan purchased as a calf. April is due with a Doorman bull about the time this article will print, and has a Chelios spring yearling daughter headed to the Hammer Time at Heritage sale in April. There is also a Goldsun daughter from April that is VG-85 first lactation, and due with her own Chelios calf for 2016. April’s 3-05 production at 365 days included 32,224 pounds milk, with 4.1% 1335 fat and 3.0% and 965 protein. April has accumulated her own impressive list of show accolades, as she was Honorable Mention Junior All-American Senior Two-Year-Old, and first senior two and HM Grand Champion at the WI Junior State Fair in 2013. In 2014, April was Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Mideast Fall National, second Senior 3-Year-Old (first junior) at the Midwest National Spring Show and Honorable Mention Grand Champion. In 2014 she was also Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin, and Nominated Junior

Hillpine Rainy Alyssa EX-90
All-American Senior Three-Year-Old. When it comes to other prominent females bred on the farm making an impact at Hillpine, a cow that definitely fits the bill is Hillpine Durham Cotton-ET, EX-93 3E. Cotton is from an Encore that was All-Wisconsin as a fall yearling, then an EX-93 Charles. Her daughter by Doorman is selling on the Spring Fashions at the Northern sale, and Cotton already has Excellent daughters by Braxton, Aspen and Morty. There is also a VG-88 Braxton and a GP-83 (first lactation) Goldsun from Cotton. Cotton’s record at 6-05 2x and 365d was 38,839 pounds milk, with 3.4% 1329 fat and 3.0% 1163 protein. Another founding family at Hillpine stems from Hillpine Astro Faith, EX-94. With an EX-91 daughter by Lance and a VG-86 first lactation daughter by Alexander, Faith’s maternal line has produced high quality females. In fact, Hillpine Hero Faustine, VG-88 as a two-year-old and a staple in the Lauber’s 2015 show string, is from a VG-88 Shaquille then an EX-91 Lance Faithful and an EX-94 Astro Faith. Faustine represents 14 generations of Hillpine breeding, back to a cow from Canada that Norman received as a gift in the 1960s. Hillpine Rainy Alyssa, EX-90, was a junior three-year-old also exhibited at the summer shows in 2015 from the Laubers. Alyssa is unique in that her sixth dam is a Triple Threat daughter of Gray-View Amille CocoET, VG-88, a purchase from the Nelsons over 30 years ago. Alyssa is due back for 2016 and headlines a great group of Rainy daughters in the Hillpine herd. The Lauber family has had success in the Red and White Holstein breed as well with Cleland Advent Korie-Red-ET, EX-94. Owned with the Stranskys of Minnesota, Korie was Nominated All-American Red and White 5-Year-Old 2012, All-American and Junior All-American Red and White Aged Cow in 2013, Grand Champion of the Grand International Red and White Junior Show at World Dairy Expo in 2013, and Reserve Supreme Champion of the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo in 2013. Korie was also named Junior Red and White Cow of the Year in 2013, and was first Aged Cow and Reserve Champion at the NAILE in 2015. She continues to look fantastic, and will make her sale debut when she sells on the Hammer Time at Heritage sale in April. The Lauber family has no plans for big changes in the coming years on the farm. Matt’s fiancé Londa Johnson will join the family in October, and Megan looks forward to some time in the industry after graduation before she explores returning to the home farm full-time. The Laubers enjoy sports, too, as Mark likes to watch basketball, and Megan is a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. The Hillpine crew has had tremendous success, and the majority of it is through their own sweat on the home farm. Ryan and Megan head the show crew and take charge when it comes to getting cattle ready for the colored shavings. While sometimes challenging in a tie-stall barn, the show cows are separated and put on a separate ration. Some of the special ladies live on a straw pack in a converted building outside of the milk barn, and are walked (or as pampered show cows go, let loose to walk) from barn to barn twice a day for milking. As much success has come to the Hillpine family, they have stayed true to their roots and are excited to continue working with youth in the area. From cousins to the Nelson family, they have many years of show fun in store and are thrilled to watch the future generations get involved in the family business.

Wrapping up the photography contest was the farm animals category, where Kaelyn Weigel of Grant County took first, Samantha Pitterle of Dodge County took second, and Campbell Booth of Sheboygan County took third. Valerie Kramer of Fond du Lac County took first, Kelsey Cramer of Green County took second and Katherine Larson of Vernon County rounded out the senior division in third place. People’s choice awards went to Brooke Hammann of Barron County in the junior division and Kelsey Cramer in the senior division. The juniors got creative in the drawing and painting contest, and taking top honors in the junior division were Clarissa Ulness of Manitowoc County, and Paige Proctor of Wood County took second and third place, as well as people’s choice honors. In the senior division, Krista Hall of Vernon County was first, Brandon Biese of Manitowoc County was second, and Rachel Nigh of Vernon County rounded out the contest. Jenna Broege of Rock County was people’s choice winner in the senior contest. Also bringing out creativity were those in the crafts contest. Hannah Hensel of Wood County was first and people’s choice winner, Jenna Thorgensen of Barron County was second, and Emily Makos of Green County was third the junior division. In the senior contest, Courtney Moser of Vernon County took first and second place, in addition to people’s choice honors, and Kelsey Cramer of Green County was third. Each county is encouraged to submit a scrapbook of their activities throughout the year. These books are judged and awards are given to the top three counties. This year, Manitowoc/Calumet Counties earned top honors, Wood County took second and District 5 Juniors followed closely in third place. Digital scrapbooks were also submitted, and the winner of that contest was Lafayette County. The folding display contest was a huge success again this year. Individuals developed display boards to highlight activities or subjects within the dairy industry. First in the junior division was Christopher Gunst of Waushara County, second was Logan Harbaugh of Shawano County, and third was Marissa Vosberg of Green County. Logan Harbaugh was named people’s choice in this contest. First and people’s choice in the intermediate division was Courtney Moser of Vernon County, and second place was McKenna Coffeen of Brown County. In the senior contest, Cierra Ehrke-Essock of Jefferson County was the winning entry and people’s choice winner. A banner from Manitowoc County took first place in the banner contest, and will represent Wisconsin at this year’s National Holstein Convention in New York. The annual essay contest encourages members to write about assigned topics relating to today’s dairy industry. With another outstanding number of entries in this year’s junior division, taking top honors in a tie were Clarissa Ulness of Manitowoc County and Kenadee Weigel of Lafayette County. Third place went to Kaelyn Weigel of Lafayette County. In the senior division, Madeline Zutz of Manitowoc County was first, Brooke Trustem of Rock County was second and Zach Dressler of Iowa County took third place. One of the most coveted awards, based on participation throughout the year and enthusiasm, is the Spirit award, which was given to Trempealeau County. The Bell-R-Ring contest was won by Manitowoc/Calumet Counties with a clever song spun from “Shake it off.” For teams to be seated in the dairy bowl contest, they must take a written exam on the first day of convention. Those individuals scoring highest are recognized with awards. High scores in the junior division this year went to Matthew Gunst of Dodge County, Ava Booth of Sheboygan County, and Tahmara Hendrickson of Vernon County. Recognized for high scores in the senior division were Lizi Endres of Dane County, Ben Schmidt of Shawano County, and Maria Balbach of Lafayette County. From the very beginning of my Junior Holstein career I had the dream of someday hearing my name read over the microphone in a room filled with Holstein enthusiasts as the Outstanding Holstein Girl. Never did I imagine that at my last convention it would be my name announced from a familiar face, one of my biggest role models, my big brother Ryan. It was truly an honor to become the 2015 Wisconsin Holstein Girl and a great privilege to follow in the large footsteps of those who have been honored as Outstanding Juniors before me. Like most farm kids, I grew up in the barn. It’s where I found my passion for the Holstein cow and at young age my parents made sure that I had a barn broom in my hand and manure on my boots. However, my parents quickly learned that it took little convincing to get me out in the barn and most of the time I was so excited I forgot my boots. Growing up, my first real responsibility was feeding calves along with my siblings Ryan and Nicole on our 400 cow Registered Holstein farm in Humbird. Working in our maternity and calf barn is where I found my calling. At the age of 7, I was known as the cow whisperer. I knew exactly when a cow needed to get moved into a calving pen and at the time I required assistance so I often had to ask for help. While the hired men didn’t like to take orders from a 7-year-old girl, they soon learned to listen as they too saw my gift. Showing cattle is a one of my favorite hobbies. Just like many juniors, I started out in little britches at the county fair and absolutely fell in love. Though I may have had a rocky start at showing, I never let it slow me down as I worked to improve my showmanship and fitting skills to where in 2012 I was named the Reserve Supreme Champion Showman at the Wisconsin State Junior Fair and 3rd in the World Dairy Expo Fitting contest. In 2008 I had the honor of showing the Reserve Grand Champion Holstein cow, my prized Joliam Dundee Phoenix 3035 EX-92, at my first Wisconsin State Junior Fair. Since then, I have shown an offspring of Phoenix from my breeding at the Wisconsin State Fair every year. In my final year, I was honored to have shown the winning Winter Calf, a Reginald daughter out of Phoenix, who went on to be named Reserve Champion Bred and Owned. Somewhere along the way, my passion for working with calves and watching them grow spread over into my passion for working with Junior Holstein youth. I have to say the two years I spent on the JAC were the best and most rewarding years of my entire junior career. In my time as a JAC, I met kids from around the state, attended numerous fitting and showing clinics, and coordinated a new event at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair. During all of these events I was honored to watch youth find their spark for Junior Holstein, make lifelong friends, and accomplish some of their biggest goals. Most importantly, I had the opportunity to help them grow in their Holstein journey to someday become Holstein experts. Aside from my Holstein activities I am currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where I am majoring in dairy science. On campus I am actively involved in Badger Dairy Club, where I served as the spring show showmanship chair for two years, the Collegiate Farm Bureau, and the Association of Women in Agriculture, where I serve as Vice-President. I am also a member of the UW-Madison dairy judging team and this last fall we competed at the Accelerated Genetics contest where my team placed 2nd and I placed 4th high individual. Upon graduation, I intend to work in agri-business, potentially as a sire mating specialist, Holstein consultant or even a classifier. I want to work directly with dairy producers on their farms. I fully intend to return to my home farm to continue the legacy of Joliam Holsteins at Selz-Pralle Dairy. But before I do, I plan to work as a herdsman for another dairy to gain insight into how other successful dairies operate. I will return home with a more business savvy, renewed energy, and have new herdsman experience to incorporate into our dairy. Though I may park my boots at night in a different zip code, my heart will be with my Holsteins. I will continue to develop my cow families. I will continue to work with youth. I will continue to work with WI Junior Holstein
To hear my name called as the Wisconsin Holstein Boy was a moment I can guarantee I will never forget. Sitting up on the head table as a member of the Junior Activities Committee and looking out over the crowd as I was announced as the recipient of the honor and watching as the entire room clapped and rose to applaud my accomplishment sent shivers down my back. Being named Holstein Boy fulfilled one of the goals that I had set for myself in the Junior Holstein Association when I was just starting to get involved, and to be able to be honored for all of my involvement with the Wisconsin Holstein Association fills me with pride each time I think about it. Home to me is Hill-Ton Holsteins, my family’s 70 cow Registered Holstein farm in Cuba City. There, my parents, John and Evie Hamilton, and I milk in a 52 cow tie-stall barn and raise our replacement heifers. We take pride in working with homebred animals and focus on production and type when mating our cattle. Additionally, we own 200 acres, about 140 of which are tillable and we raise alfalfa, corn, and oats to feed to the cattle. Working with my parents on the farm has resulted in many long hours of work, but I would never trade the lessons that I was able to learn from all the time spent in the barn or the cab of a tractor. After graduating from Cuba City High School in 2014, I headed to the UW-Madison. Currently, I am a sophomore and I’m pursuing a degree in Dairy Science and a certificate in Agricultural Business Management. On campus, I am involved in Alpha Gamma Rho, serving as the Finance Chair, on the Constitutional Committee, and on the planning committee for our “Dairy Dash” 5k Philanthropy. I am also active in the Badger Dairy Club and served as a World Dairy Expo Co-Chair, managing the student labor in the show ring. I am also treasurer of the Colligate Farm Bureau. I am on the dairy judging team and competed at the Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Judging Contest. After graduation, I plan to pair my knowledge that I am gaining from school with what I have learned from working on the home farm and years of studying dairy bowl to take over the family farm from my parents. My love for Registered Holsteins started at only 15 months old, when my parents bought me my first calf. Owning a calf on my family’s farm made being around the cattle more personal for me. It sparked the interest for the dairy industry which had been harbored in my heart since my first trip to the barn, creating a strong desire to spend time working with dairy cattle. I soon enjoyed following my parents around, helping on the farm whenever I could, and trying to learn how to do more and more with the cows every day. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how much I had grown with that first calf of mine and how much direction she had given to my life. My involvement in the Junior Holstein Association really took off when I was seven and showed my first calf, and from that point, I became more and more involved with Holstein related events. When I started attending more events and had the chance to interact with some of the older members, I decided that someday I wanted to be the one to inspire the younger members and share my passion for the association. After serving on the Junior Activities Committee for the past two years and now being named Holstein Boy, I feel like my time as a junior member has come full circle, and I hope that the younger members that I have had the chance to meet and talk to at convention, cow camp, or any other event that I have attended can feel my passion for the association and will have fond memories of an encouraging word I gave them or a fun experience that we shared. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I would never be where I am today without the help of more people than I can count. To begin, my family has been my biggest support system and without their encouraging words and suggestions pushing me on, I know I wouldn’t have pushed to get to where I am today. I can’t thank my parents enough for all they have done for me, from doing the chores when I am gone at events and now at college, to proofreading my award forms and helping me practice for contests, to just being there to help me succeed. They have shaped me into who I am through

Charlie Hamilton, continued their example of hard work and dedication and introduced me to the Registered Holstein cow, and words can’t explain how grateful I am. I also want to thank everyone in our great industry that has helped me out in some way over the years. The words of advice, the encouragement, the opportunities to learn and grow, and the general support that I have received from too many people to count has made me who I am, and I wouldn’t exchange these gifts for anything. As for the younger members that hold the passion and the excitement that I remember having for the Junior Holstein Association at their age, they have helped me stay positive, even at the exhausting end of a day at convention or after herding them around at Cow Camp, and they continue to make me want to give back to the association every day. Finally, I have to thank God for giving me amazing parents, friends, family, and the Holstein cow and for all the chances I have had to make myself better all the time. Reaching my goal of being named Outstanding Holstein Boy wouldn’t be possible without everyone, and as I continue to move forward every day I know that I will never forget the pride I hold for having been a Wisconsin Junior Holstein member!

Kati's Calf-eine Hello cow and coffee enthusiasts alike, It’s hard to believe that March is already upon us, although I don’t mind the longer days and upcoming rise in temperature. And with spring comes one of the most exciting and busiest times for dairymen; field work and fresh cows! With the upcoming show season, many of you may have heifer calves hitting the ground very soon which is definitely something to look forward to. It’s always one of my favorite times of the year! And even though March is one to look forward to, February did not disappoint by any means. Congratulations to all who were recognized at the Adult Holstein Convention and had the opportunity to hear from former Packer player, Mark Tauscher. There isn’t a better combination than Holsteins and Packers! Additionally, many folks in the south and southeast side of the state had the opportunity to classify their beloved
bovines. Congrats to those who fared well and good luck to those who are awaiting the classifier to step into your barn. These past two months serving as your Holstein Princess have flown by, but I am looking forward to many more memories with all of you. Just recently, I had the neat opportunity to spend an evening with the Dodge County Holstein Association where I quickly realized something. Although we may all come from different farms, there is one thing that connects us all and that is the Holstein cow. As I listened to their junior members give a report on the past year’s activities, I instantly felt at home with all of the laughs, smiles and stories that make them a close-knit “Holstein” family. So I challenge you all to find time to make memories with your Holstein family. The time is now; before all of the field work begins, before the hustle and bustle of show season kicks off, take the time right now to spend time with the others in your association. Others may come and go but your Holstein family will be there for the long haul. Take the time now to soak it all in and make the most of your time with them. Dairy judging is strong at the University of Minnesota, so strong that its teams placed first overall in all three of the major contests in 2015: the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). They didn’t just win; they won decisively in all three, including an amazing 54-point margin of victory in Madison. This year was just the latest in a string of wins for U of M student teams, who have been consistent top finishers at all the major contests over the past decade. No other university team comes close to this streak. Congratulations! If you’re considering a career in dairy, CONSIDER THE U OF M. In addition to our highly successful judging teams, you can be part of the Gopher Dairy Club, where more than 100 student members gain experience and industry contacts through activities like an all-expense-paid 11-day trip to California in January for seniors. The West Central Holstein Club is this year’s hosts and we have a great convention planned for attendees. Minnesota Junior Holstein Association All Breeds Convention March 18-20, 2016 Open to juniors from all states! The 2016 MJHA AllBreeds convention will be held on March 1820, 2016 at the Best Western, Willmar Minn. Members ages 9-21 will share in activities mixers, workshops, and speakers. In addition there will be contests such as dairy quiz bowl, dairy jeopardy, a public speaking contest, photo contest and a display board making contest. This is a great chance to meet new people throughout the state that share a common interest in dairy cattle. If interested in attending please contact the MHA office as soon as possible. Following the show the MJHA board of directors will be holding an Ag Olympics competition for all youth to participate in. Minnesota State Show June 24, 2016 The MHA State Show will be held at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds in Rochester, Minn. The Rochester Holstein Club will be hosting the event and will do a great job welcoming exhibitors and spectators from near and far. Jason Lloyd has been selected to judge the show. Confirmation of judges and their bios will be included in the June MN Holstein News. Midwest Fall National Show August 31, 2016 The Midwest Fall National Show will be held in conjunction with the MN State Fair Holstein Show on August 31, 2016 at the MN State Fair grounds.

“Showmanhsip” Showmanship has always been a hot topic of discussion for judges. Some judges feel it should be the first class of the show, while everyone is in a good mood and their clothes are spotless. Others feel it is a marathon and it should be the last class of the day. It is survival of the fittest, literally, and let’s see who wants it the most. No matter how hot it is or tired you are or where you placed let’s see that smile. No matter how much manure is on your shoes or sweat and froth soaked on your hsirt let’s hear you rattle off those answers. Things have changed greatly in showmanship, clipping is a major art form instead of the normal head, tail
and shoulder. Years ago you had to wear white, all white with a black bow tie and black hard toe shoes. No exceptions, ever. Well there was one time. In the early 1970’s a young lady won the 4-H showmanship award at the Minnesota State Fair wearing white shorts and tennis shoes. After the show there were no shortage of people who pointed out to the judge that it was impossible to win showmanship wearing tennis shoes. Personally I had hoped it might start a trend. But, such was not the case and in the forty plus years since, I must say I have never ever seen another person win a showmanship class wearing tennis shoes.

2016 Wisconsin Holstein Barn Meetings Holstein Breeding 101: Is it the Same Game or Have all the Rules Changed? The Wisconsin Holstein Association invites all members and area dairy farmers to the 2016 Barn Meetings. We have three fantastic breeders opening their doors to show how they approach “breeding a great herd of Registered Holsteins.” These farms all have a different style and have different goals to breeding Holsteins, but have all found great success. We invite breeders to join us for a discussion about what’s new and hot and what’s not. Is it the same old game or have all the rules changed? There are no right or wrong answers and we think one of Wisconsin’s strengths is its diversity in breeder’s styles and goals. There are a lot of “tools” in the toolbox to pick from, whether you are going after a +2800 GTPI individual or an All-American. Do you embace these new “tools” or does the word genomics make your skin crawl? Where ever you fall on the spectrum, you might be surprised at what ideas are out there to help you breed your definition of that “perfect” cow. Good food, good fellowship and good cows are on the agenda and we want you to be a part of it so mark your calendars. Endres Berryridge Farms LLC Steve, Randy & Jeff Endres Families Endres Berryridge Farms, LLC will be hosting our first barn meeting on Wednesday, March 23. Berryridge Farms, Waunakee, was established in 1915 and is a fourth generation family farm currently run by brothers Steve, Jeff and Randy Endres and their families. Steve is married to Kathy and they have three children, Cassie, Lizi and 18 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2016
Zach; Jeff and Jenny Endres have three children, Sarah, Natalie and Nicole; and Randy and Karen have three daughters, Eliza, Ava and Mara. The brothers take pride in the next generation enjoying the business, being active on the farm and their involvement in showing dairy cattle at the local, district and state level with much success. Berryridge is home to 540 cows with 500 milking at a rolling herd average of 31,290 milk with 4.3% 1345 fat and 3.09% 966 protein. They are a Yahara Pride Farms member and focus on sustainable nutrient and crop management. The family farms about 1,000 acres of corn, alfalfa, soybeans and wheat. A new 308-stall tunnel ventilated freestall barn was recently built to optimize cow comfort. The herd is bred for milk production with strong components, quality udders and dairy strength with the help of the SMS mating program from Select Sires. When selecting bulls, the Endres family uses a combination of genomic young sires and proven bulls. When looking for genomic young sires to incorporate into the breeding program, they choose bulls that combine strong production traits with type from proven cow families. One herd highlight is Berryridge Shottle 1270-ET, EX-92 2E GMD DOM, with a top record at 4-09 3x 365d 55,110M 3.9% 2152F 3.1% 1692P. To date, 1270 has had five bulls go into AI and also has a great group of daughters by Jeeves, Lauthority, Gold Chip, along with a VG-85 two-year-old Supersire with a GTPI at +2386. Another cow that has had a large impact on the herd is Berryridge Toystory Naomi, EX-91 2E GMD. Naomi has been a great brood cow with over 20 offspring sired by Clark, Atwood, Numero Uno, Bradnick, Gold Chip, McCutchen, Doorman and Goldwyn pregnancies. The family’s favorite daughters include VG-88 and VG-87 two-year-old Gold Chips, and a VG-87 two-year-old Bradnick. Ke-Jo Hi Metro 1920-ET (Joyful) is EX-92 3E GMD with over 251,000 lifetime milk and goes back to 2nd-Look Durham Juba EX-95. Joyful’s most notable daughter is Berryridge Sanchez Joanna EX-91 2E, who has daughters by Corvette and Beemer. Other family members include a VG-87 Guthrie and three great young Atwoods that are not yet scored. Finally, Berryridge Supersire 2184-ET VG-86, is another exciting two-year-old with a GTPI at +2376. There is also a great group of young VG two-year-olds sired by Defiant, Guthrie and Mogul. The Endres family feels their best older cows are sired by Shottle, Sanchez, Goldwyn and Gabor. The Endres family invites you to visit their farm on March 23 to see these great cow families and their herdmates.
Sugar Creek Dairy - Rick & Marleen Adams Sugar Creek Dairy and Rick and Marleen Adams will host a barn meeting on March 30. Rick and Marleen have been farming together since they were married in 1980, and farmed with family in Lake Geneva until 1997. At the time, they milked just 50 cows. In 1997, the Adams partnered to create Sugar Creek Dairy, and in 2008, they became sole owners of the operation. Rick and Marleen’s two children, Ryan and Sara, are both employed off the farm. The workforce at the dairy includes 12 employees. Sugar Creek Dairy is home to 200 acres, with the majority of feed purchased from neighboring farms and all harvesting being custom done. Three sand-bedded freestall barns, with a small post-fresh barn make up the milking facilities. Cows are milked in a double-12 parlor. All calves are raised on site, with heifers sent to the Adams’ new heifer facility, built nine miles away in 2014. The herd boasts a rolling herd average of 32,726 milk, with 4.0% 1312 fat and 3.1% 1020 protein. The herd’s BAA is 105.5%, with 13

Excellent, 160 Very Good and 240 Good Plus cows. Rick and Marleen aim to breed a herd of cows that make a lot of milk and look good doing it. Semex mates the cows and heifers, which are bred for strength and width so they can eat more feed, give more milk, gain weight while they do it, and then breed back. When it comes to technology and tools available, the Adams utilize Holstein Complete, the Easy program, and Enlight, in addition to genomic testing their top heifers. SCR Heat time with rumination is utilized for heat detection, and to spot off-feed cows. The Adams family made their first key registered purchase with Second-Look Marvel Helena. She produced a SWD Valiant heifer calf on Christmas day in 1985. Second-Look Val Boots became the foundation of the Mary family, one of the Adams’ highest quality Registered Holstein females. In addition to members of the Mary family, guests at the barn meeting can look forward to seeing member of the families of SugarC Alexander Queen EX-92 and Navs Mac Shawna VG-87. From the Shawna family, guests can also look forward to seeing Sugar-C Pety Spice, the number one Pety heifer for Net Merit in the U.S., with +2627 GTPI and +813 NM$. The Adams have 10 milking Doormans with 30 more to calve. They also have 10 milking Mogul daughters, 10 Sid daughters, and 20 heifers over +2400 GTPI. This diverse group also has heifers by Chelios, Headliner, Supersire, and McCutchen. Sugar Creek recently had six new Excellents and 78 new Very Goods in January, along with 24 new VG first lactation cows. Rick and Marleen look forward to welcoming guests to the farm on Wednesday, March 30, in Elkhorn.
Voight Acres Steve & Sue, Mitch & Amanda, and Tim Voight Voight Acres and the Steve and Sue, Mitch and Amanda, and Tim Voight families welcome Wisconsin Holstein breeders and enthusiasts
to the farm as they host a barn meeting on March 31. This fifth generation farm family formed an LLC in May of 2014, when Tim and Mitch bought into the farm. Steve and Sue have been farming since 1978. The Voight family built a new barn in 2014, consisting of 285 freestalls with sand bedding and the option for natural or tunnel ventilation. With the new barn came a double-eight parallel parlor, with room to expand to a double-12. The farm resides on 400 acres, including rented and owned land. The Voights worked to build their 85-cow herd that was previously in a stanchion barn, and now milk 263 cows twice a day with a rolling herd average of 24,053 milk with 3.8% 910 fat and 3.1% 751 protein. The herd maintains an outstanding SCC of 50,000. When it comes to breeding philosophies at Voight Acres, the family strives for good, sound cows with high lifetime production. They select bulls for high type, high components and low somatic cell count. Durham and Linjet played a big part in the genetic influence in the herd. With that in mind, one of the highlight cow families of the herd stems from Voight-Acres Durham Daisy, EX-91. Daisy was Reserve Grand Champion at the 2003 Wisconsin Junior State Fair, and had a pair of EX Linjet twins. Voight-Acres Daisy Duke, EX-94, was Grand Champion at the Outagamie County Fair and Grand Champion of the District 7 Holstein Show in 2013. Voight-Acres Daisy Mae, EX-93, was another influential dam that the Voight family flushed and had success with. Also leaving an impact on the herd is the Tonic-J family, transmitting through high production and type. Voight-Acres Lou Rhonda, EX-92, and Voight-Acres Durham Megan, EX-92, both continue to make an impact on the herd with these outstanding traits. The Voight family looks forward to welcoming Holstein breeders to the farm on Thursday, March 31 as they open the doors of their beautiful new facilities.

2015 ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN SENIOR BREEDER AWARD Lynn & Gary Zehr, Zehrview Holsteins, Graymont, IL Back in the 50’s, a couple of young boys were growing up on a small Holstein dairy farm. It appeared that the boys could have been more interested in imitating Roy Rogers by playing cowboys and Indians than helping on the dairy farm. At times, the two got into some heavy spats, but even so, these boys were inseparable. Their dad started this Holstein operation with his folks. They milked the cows in a stanchion barn. As the boys grew a bit older, dad took the family to the county fair. It was a fun day of rides, fair food and watching the livestock show. That was the beginning of a passion and desire that continues on today. Their dad decided to select the kids a heifer to show the following year. This Senior Yearling, after many hours of preparing her for the show, won first place. Little did they know how this event would change and mold the rest of their lives. In the years following, the two boys showed at the 4-H fair and eventually added more shows and fairs. As they grew up, the Holstein Cow became a huge part of their goals and dreams. Although school activities were also important to them, the Holstein Cow always came first. The eldest son returned to the farm after graduating from Illinois State University, while the younger brother stayed home to farm after graduating high school. The partnership was officially established in the late 70’s. They continued milking registered Holstein 42 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2016
cows and farming row crops and alfalfa. Their top priority always focused on selecting and breeding for show quality animals and pedigrees. This partnership survived a terrible tragedy in 1994, a barn fire. It was a very sad day because several show cattle perished. However good genetics and hard work brought future show ring success to this farm. They converted from the stanchion barn to a trigon parlor and added a 12 stall box stall barn. 2015 ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN JUNIOR BREEDER AWARD John Mitchell, Mitchell’s Holsteins, Winnebago, IL John is a 2008 graduate of the University of Illinois where he was active in Alpha Gamma Rho, competed with the dairy judging team, was part of the platinum award winning team representing Illinois in the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge, was president of the Illini Dairy Club, and was named a senior 100 honoree by the University during the spring of his senior year. Growing up, John was active in 4-H, showing his dairy animals and sheep, and took advantage of every opportunity to participate in dairy bowl practices and competitions with both 4-H and the county and state Holstein teams. He has been to nearly every National Holstein Convention since 2000, either participating in youth programs or coaching the youth of Illinois. John farms in Winnebago, Illinois as one of the co-owners of Mitchell Dairy and Grain LLC. Formed in 2014 by Tim, John, and Aaron Mitchell, it is the most recent expansion of the Mitchell’s family farm. John is the 6th generation to farm in Winnebago since 1868 and is now the 3rd generation on the current dairy operation, which was purchased in 1960 by John’s grandfather, J. Douglas Mitchell. Shortly before John graduated from high school in 2004, with a nod toward future expansion, a new milking facility large enough to accommodate a double twelve herringbone parlor was built and initially outfitted as a double eight. When John returned home from the University of Illinois with a degree in Animal Sciences, in the
spring of 2008, plans were placed in motion to include John in the business and there was talk of expansion in the dairy once again. Sadly plans slowed when his dad Mike, and brother Kyle, died in a farming accident in July of 2008, but expansion soon continued with the addition of a new calf building, commodity shed, and a number of bunker silos in 2009. Expansion began again in the spring of 2014 when John’s brother, Aaron, graduated from the University of Illinois and returned to join the farming operation. The 350 cow facility was completed in early 2015 and the first cows were moved into the new barn in May. The business is currently milking 320 head, three times a day with a rolling herd average of 24,784 pounds of milk, 872 pounds of fat, and 759 pounds of protein. The herd had a BAA of 104 on the last classification and has also garnered the Progressive Genetics Herd award for the last 17 years with their average CTPI in 2015 coming in at 1825. The family also farms about 2500 acres, primarily corn and beans. John recently completed seven years as a state director representing the BooneWinnebago Holstein club for the Illinois

Holstein Association, is currently president of the Boone-Winnebago Holstein club, is a member of the Winnebago-Boone County Farm Bureau Board, and is president of the Winnebago-Boone County Farm Bureau young farmer’s committee. John enjoys competing in young farmer’s discussion meets and has represented Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau at the state level multiple times. Furthermore, he spends countless hours each year coaching dairy bowl teams, preparing future generations of young dairy enthusiasts for state and national competitions. T
he story began in May of 1973 when I was a young boy. When I was four my mom and dad purchased the farm next to my Dad’s parents in the Town of Wien that I now run with my wife Barb and our two daughters Madison and Abigail. My parents tell me I was always trying to help them with the chores when growing up long before I was able to. I started showing cattle when I was in sixth grade with Edgar FFA at the Wisconsin Valley Fair and the Athens Fair and continued showing through high school. I got my first registered calf in 1982 as a Doboy Heifer Project calf, Krause-Acres Ford Jolly. She was a really good cow at producing milk but not producing heifer calves - with five lactations she produced five bull calves. After graduating I started working off the farm full time and still helping with the farm part-time and doing relief milking in the area for 10 years. In 1997 I decided to go back to the farm full time. I bought the cattle from my parents and “Moo-dy Acres” was created. I rented the farm until 2002 when I decided to buy the farm from my parents. On July 25, 2003, Barb and I got married and we began to farm. Barb works fulltime off the farm as an accountant and helps when she is able with milking and crops. During the summer of 2004 we remodeled the milking cow portion of the barn and added freestalls and new mats for the cows. In July of 2004 we welcomed our first daughter Madison and in June 2006, our second daughter Abigail joined the farm. When the girls were little they loved helping with the chores as they are able and always making sure that the cows had all their feed pushed in with their little red shovels and wheelbarrows. In July of 2011 Bethany, a neighbor girl, came looking for a job helping on the farm as the current farmer she worked for was selling his herd and she did not want to give up working with the animals. Not long after starting to work here she asked about showing some of our heifers at the upcoming fairs. Her interest in showing our cattle brought back all those great memories of my showing days. That first year Bethany showed three of our heifers. Our girls loved helping that summer with the walking and washing of the calves and all the extra attention that was given to those three show animals. Out of those first three animals that were shown from our herd, one animal remains - Moo-dy Acres Jotan Nicki-Red. She is one of the stars of our herd and looks as young as any of our fresh 2-year-old heifers. It is hard to believe she will be turning six years old this fall. Nicki has really become one of our foundation cows as she has been successful at both milking and being the key player in growing our numbers of Red Holsteins in the herd. Not long after Bethany got the girls interested in showing, our oldest daughter Madison was old enough to show at the Athens Fair as a Cloverbud with our 4-H club, the Wien Wildcats 4-H. That same year as a Director of the Marathon County Farm Bureau we began the “Little Britches Dairy Show” at the Athens Fair. The show was a huge success with over 30 kids showing calves at the fair. The “Little Britches Dairy Show” has continued to grow at the Athens Fair with many new kids showing every year and many returning year after year as they wait for their turn as a 4-H exhibitor in the big ring. In 2012 we were able to bring the “Little Britches Dairy Show” to the Wisconsin Valley Fair with the help of the Marathon County Holstein Breeders and the Marathon County DHIA office. It has also been a huge success and we have been able to bring the experience of showing animals to many young children who may have never even seen a calf before or who have never even seen a dairy farm. This past fair we were even able to bring the show to the Show Pavilion at the Wisconsin Valley Fair which is extra special for those young 4Hers waiting for their turn in the “big” ring. Our family keeps busy away from the farm also as members of Hope Lutheran Church, Marathon County Farm Bureau, Marathon County Holstein Breeders and Wien Wildcats 4-H. Madison and Abigail enjoy going to Cow Camp every year with the juniors and making many new friends who enjoy working with and showing animals as much as they do. We have really learned to enjoy going to the many shows in our area with our family. The girls have had a few successful years at the local fairs and even the District 4 Show since those first three animals rekindled the show bug in our family. In the early part of 2014 Madison decided she wanted to have a project animal for the upcoming show season just like she had seen the bigger kids doing. We were able to locate her one from some friends of ours, Don and Jenna Fahey. They had a great heifer for Madison to start her 4-H showing days with and we welcomed Dream-Team Asteroid Rayann to our farm. We all learned a lot about showing over the next several months and when Rayann made her appearance at the Wisconsin Valley Fair that July she was selected as the Supreme Junior Champion. Rayann continued to shine that summer as she went on to be selected as the Supreme Junior Champion at the Athens Fair as well. We have had a few other great heifers who have performed very well for us over the past few years at the local fairs as well as the District show. They are: Langfrthgen Apple Maybel-Red who was the Jr Red & White Champion at the Wisconsin Valley Fair in 2014; Moo-dy Acres Absolute Martha-Red, 2nd blue at the District 4 Show in 2014; Moo-dy Acres Rudolph Niya-Red; Ace-N-Spades Redburst Desire-Red, Red & White Junior Champion at the Wisconsin Valley Fair in 2015 as well as 2nd place at the Marshfield Fair; Moo-dy Acres Gourmet Nevada; Bosside Rvn Vessa-Red. Madison and Abigail are active members of the Marathon County Holstein Juniors and enjoy helping out with the brat fry sales the Juniors organize at county sales and meetings. Both girls are also active at church and enjoy playing basketball and volleyball any chance they get with their local school teams. We have been growing the herd over the past few years by attending numerous sales in the state and picking young stock that we hope to be key players in our herd for many years to come. Our current herd average is 21,760 with 3.68 800 fat, 3.17 690 Protein and 76 somatic cell. We are looking forward to classifying our herd for the first time in May. NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Dear Holstein Breeders, On behalf of your Midwest National Directors, Paul Buhr, Dale Drendel, Mark Kerndt and VicePresident Boyd Schaufelberger, I will author our spring update. We changed our reporting style this time because I had the opportunity to attend the Holstein Association USA member update meeting in Modesto, Calif., held in conjunction with the 77th annual meeting of the California Holstein Association. From a registration standpoint, the Association posted a wonderful year. There were 382,990 Holsteins registered with the 1 Holstein Place. To put that in perspective, 373,056 Holsteins were registered in 2014; 301,852 in 2005 and 293,527 in 2004. To say the least, interest in Holsteins is running strong. When combining registrations and Basic IDs, 581,866 Holsteins were identified last year. If you are doing the math, that means 198,876 animals were added to the Holstein database using Basic ID. Of course, we hope to move as many of those animals to the full registration process in ensuing generations. Genomic testing continues to run strong. Last year, 285,458 genomic tests were performed on Holstein females. “Since we started tracking genomic testing back in 2008, there have been 1,054,743 tests run and recorded on Holsteins cattle,” noted CEO John Meyer. “By comparison, there have been just 138,043 genomic tests performed and recorded on the next largest dairy breed in the United States.” It takes shear numbers and data to create genetic progress. By that barometer, Holstein leads all dairy cattle and all domesticated mammals on the planet. During that California gathering, a few other Association metrics were discussed. When evaluating registrations by state, the Midwest is a lifeblood of the Association. Five Upper Midwest states ranked in the top 10 for registrations. Wisconsin accounted for 21 percent of the activity. Minnesota and Michigan posted 5 percent each; Iowa, 4 percent and Illinois 3 percent. The only states that posted higher totals were New York and Pennsylvania, 13 percent each; California, 6 percent; Ohio 5, percent and Washington, 3 percent. Last year, Wisconsin expanded registrations by 4.3 percent as well. Other states growing included (in percentage order): New York, Washington, Michigan, Texas and New Mexico. Interest in genomic testing is mirrored by embryo transfer (ET) registrations. In 2005, 17,000 ET calves were registered and that number grew to 37,000 last year. In fact, almost 10 percent of all registrations were either ET or IVF calves in 2015. Red and White Holsteins also have shown tremendous growth over the last decade moving from 6,000 to just shy of 13,000 registrations. Polled Holstein shows a similar trend moving from less than 300 registrations in 2004 to 4,000 last year. At this year’s national convention in New York, four important elections will take place. Mark Kerndt will run for a second term in Region 6. Meanwhile, directors in Region 1 (Pete Waterman), Region 4 (Gayle Carson) and at-large (Corey Geiger) have all served two terms and are ineligible for re-election. It sounds like each of these seats will have at least two candidates running... in many cases three. The final nominating committee conference call takes place on March 8. Third Annual Iowa County All-Breeds Futurity
Formal attire and pretty bovines will draw a big crowd. The third Annual Iowa County All-Breeds Futurity was held September 6, 2015 at the Iowa County Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Iowa County Fair and drew a crowd that left standing room only. Seventeen two-year olds paraded in the ring representing four different breeds. With prize money totaling more than $1700, exhibitors pulled out their formal attire competing for the top prize. Rick Thompson, Darlington, WI served as the judge for this exciting show in Mineral Point, WI. A pair of Holstein cows took the top honors in the 2015 show. The Champion entry with prize money totaling $350 came from Hi-Lo-Valley Farm and Dennis Bowers, Highland, WI. MS Hi-Lo-Valley Harmony-ET is a VG-87 Pine-Tree Sid-ET Senior 2-year-old was also the Bred & Owned winner. Reserve Champion honors went to the entry from Gildale Farm, Hollendale, WI. Gildale-KJ Destry Renita is a fancy Red and White 2year-old that took home $250 in prize winnings. Rounding out the top three with a $175 in prize money was Hi-Lo-Valley Seaver Hula also exhibited by Hi-Lo-Valley Farm. Complete results are listed below. It is also home to 21 of the top 100 on Holstein Association USA’s Top Genomic Young Bulls list. We asked some of the SMS Consultants in Wisconsin for recommendations on several mating questions. For more information, visit www.selectsires.com. Q: According to the Holstein USA website, there were over 400 Mogul daughters registered in the last two weeks. If these are breeding age heifers, what would you recommend for mating options? Brian Kelroy, East Central Select Sires: The Mogul daughters have quickly become herd favorites. Mogul continues to sire daughters that classify well and have a great balance of type and production. Many heifer pens are full of Mogul daughters and the question of what to breed them to is often asked. 7H11477 McCutchen is a great cross on the Mogul daughters. McCutchen daughters are tall and long, have plenty of length to their neck with a good amount of dairyness and rib. Their udders are attached extremely tight as his linear shows, he excels in udder depth and his daughters have rear teats that are centrally placed. Feet and legs are also a strong point on McCutchen. One classifier told me the McCutchen’s daughters have some of the best feet and legs they have seen in a long time. 7HO10290 Gold Chip, 7HO12353 Beemer and 7HO12569 Heisenberg are other options that would work on Mogul heifers. Q: What current matings are you most excited to see calves on the ground? Bob Sabo, NorthStar Select Sires: I think anytime you make mating decisions, whether you are a registered breeder or a commercial dairyman, you are excited to see what the next generation will bring. Two of the high net merit young bulls that will be interesting are 7HO12600 Modesty (Pety x Supersire) +2854 TPI and 7HO13250 Jedi (Montross x Supersire) 2787 TPI. One of the new high production, high type young bulls is 7HO12723 Gama (Montross x Sterling) at over +1800 of milk and +3.27 on type. Select Sires is the breed leader when it comes to making high type sires and people are waiting to see the calves of 7HO12593 Union (Doorman x Atwood), 7HO12587 Diamondback (Doorman x Talent) from the Apple family and 7HO12464 Chrome (McCutchen x Sanchez) at +3.28 on type. Another young bull that is creating a lot of buzz is 250H12589 Jacoby (Doorman x Goldchip). A bull that has been around a while that is still creating excitement with his calves is 7HO12353 Beemer at +3.67 for type. People continue to love their Beemer calves. I think as people continue to learn how to use 7HO11118 Brokow and 7HO11596 Defiant, those calves will continue to do great things in the show ring. These are just a few highlights of the exciting next generation of calves coming from Select Sires. Q: What is your favorite group of daughters that you’ve seen fresh over the last few months? Eric Westphal, East Central Select Sires: My favorite group of daughters I’ve seen lately are the second lactation 7HO10999 Bradnick daughters. With his consistant type pattern of tremendous udder improvement and sound feet and legs, his daughters are standouts in many of the herds that I work with. The growth and development from first lactation to second is very impressive and comes as no surprise with a sire stack consisting of Sanchez x Shottle x Durham. I believe Bradnick is the perfect cross for many of the Goldwyn bloodlines present in herds today with his ability to lower pins and slightly straighten rear legs side view. I would recommend to use him on daughters of GW Atwood, Guthrie, Dempsey, Atlantic and Golden Dreams. Q: Showcase Selections sires Defiant and Armani had exciting December proofs. If producers would like to incorporate these sires in their herd, what would be the best cross to use them on? David Sarbacker, East Central Select Sires: Defiant and Armani, now with more and more milking daughters, continue to confirm their ability to make the kind of cows producers are looking for in a elite type sire. Armani adds length, stretch and style with ideal flex to the the hock. The udders have been very well attached with good texture and I would protect him some on depth of rib. Armani should cross well on Talent, Advent, Colt P, Sanchez, Bradnick, Dundee,and Damion blood. While Defiant adds depth of fore and rear rib with tremendous dairy strength. I have been pleased
with height and width of the rear udders as well. Defiant is a logical mating on the Apple bloodlines as well as Advent and Ladd P blood. Both have many opportunities to make the extreme one for the Red and White breeders as well as Black and White. Q: A high number of heifers placing in the top 10 at WHA shows in 2015 were sired by Atwood, Brokaw and Braxton. What would be your recommendation for matings on these heifers to make show calves for 2017? Perry Phend, NorthStar Select Sires: This is a difficult question to answer, due to inbreeding! Maple-Downs GW Atwood is a Goldwyn son from a Durham daughter, so that eliminates a lot of high type bulls, such as Gold Chip, Dempsey, Armani, Beemer, Bankroll, Brokaw, Corvette, Defiant, and Jacoby. So that leaves a handful of bulls that I would believe to make the fancy show heifers. First, Mr D Apple Diamondback *RC is a Doorman son from a Talent from Apple. I believe he will keep the show style but add a little more strength to the Atwood’s but you still have to protect the Rump Angle some. They should be very long and have lots of ring presence. Next, Regancrest-GV-S Bradnick is Sanchez son from a Shottle from Barbie. This would be the best cross with Atwood daughters. They may not make the super fancy show calves, but they would surely make the best cows. He will give you more strength and change rump, plus add a little more foot angle. I have seen many Bradnicks milking, they are nice 2-yearolds, but really change from 1st to 2nd lactation. They are going to make great older cows. Finally, Webb-Vue Mccutchn Chrome is a McCutchen son from a Sanchez from a strong family. I think this will make a nice cross with Atwoods. He will give them more strength and improve rump angle but still give that stunning style that is needed to be competitive. Mr Atwood Brokaw is an Atwood son from a Mac daughter from Barbie. Much like Atwood, if you do not want to inbreed you can’t use any Goldwyn bloodlines. So these are the three bulls that I would recommend on Brokaw daughters. De-Su Bkm McCutchen is a Bookem son from a Shottle. I believe this would be a nice cross with Brokaws. He should lengthen the neck, giving them more style through the front end. I have seen many McCutchens and am very impressed with them. Siemers Mogul Pety is a Mogul son from an Explode daughter. His oldest daughters are breeding age and are very impressive. They have a lot of style and have nice length to them with good feet and legs and nice rump stuture. Morningview MCC Kingboy is a McCutchen son from an EX Super. His calves are very much like the McCutchens but are a little deeper in the rear flank and wider in the rumps but very stylish calves Regancrest S Braxton is a Shottle from Durham Barbie. With Braxton there is no Goldwyn, but with Shottle in the pedigree you still have to stay away from bulls like Gold Chip, Beemer, McCutchen, Corvette, and Defiant. So here are my recommendations for Braxton daughters. Mr Apples Armani is a Goldwyn son from Apple. He will make fancy show heifers with Braxton daughters, because he will put dairyness and style to go with the strength and depth of the Braxton daughters. Lirr-Drew Dempsey is a Goldwyn son from a Derry daughter. This would be the mating that I would use to make great cows down the road. They may be too strong to make fancy heifers. He is a bull that the more milking daughters you see, the more you will like them. Fustead Goldwyn Guthrie is a Goldwyn son from a Blitz daughter. This mating will make some fancy calves but it should be a good cross to also make nice cows. Guthrie’s quality and style will be a very very nice fit with Braxton daughters These are some of the crosses that I feel would work very well without inbreeding! wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/March 2016-21

Junior progressive breeder, breeder of an excellent cow, and breeder of a multiple “E” cow forms are all due to the National Holstein Office no later than May 1, 2016! Greetings juniors, It’s hard to believe that Junior Convention was already three months ago, and that 2016 is already a quarter over. Through this time, your JAC committee has been hard at work preparing and planning for the upcoming year. The committee had our first meeting in late January where we started off with an insightful leadership training session from Shelly Mayer of PDPW. We spent the rest of the meeting discussing the upcoming year’s events, and then ended with a fun team building trip to Cascade Mountain. Something we are truly excited about for this year is our partnership with PDPW through the Youth Leadership Derby. We see this as a great opportunity for our members to partake in with other young dairy enthusiasts to grow their leadership and other professional skills. Wisconsin Holstein will be awarding 10 junior members a scholarship to attend the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisonsin’s Youth Leadership Derby - a two-day, overnight educational experience. The program will run April 16-17, 2016 at the Brillion High School. Applicants must be 1518 years old. This is a must-attend program as youth prepare for the next step in securing an education and career in the dairy industry. Youth Leadership Derby has been designed to allow students to take a deep dive exploration in leadership, science & communication activities, while participating in dairy operation tours and hands-on breakout sessions that will benefit their future success in either an academic or work place environment. Career-building opportunities include: • Keynote speakers • Communication & team building workshops • Industry networking • Interactive leadership activities • Industry tours Students will network with both UW-Madison college students and industry leaders from around the country. Join Us for Cow Camp 2016! Beaver Creek Reserve, Fall Creek • May 14-15 This year cow camp will be held at Beaver Creek Reserve in Fall Creek, Wis., May 14-15, 2016. Our tentative schedule is for registration to start at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and getting campers settled in. We will start the next morning with our morning walking trail adventures and breakfast. There are some exciting workshops in the works, including farm safety, photography, recycling a cow, showmanship, crafts, social media, nutrition, and advertising. It’s looking to be another busy spring with many Holstein activities planned. Along with all of the upcoming spring sales, WHA has another great series of barn meetings planned for the end of March. I hope you’ll take a day (or two, or three) to visit these three herds and join in the discussion. For more information on the barn meetings, turn to page 18 of the Midwest Holsteins section. Speaking of Midwest Holsteins, thanks to all of the advertisers that continue to make these combined issues a success. I hope you enjoy not only seeing the ads from Wisconsin breeders, but also catching up on what’s happening in other states. This issue also includes all the results from the Junior Convention held in January. Congrats to all who won awards and placed in the contests. If you would like copies of any of our award winner photos, please give us a call or an email. Next month is our Production issue. We’ll be publishing our Production Top 10 lists again this year as well as featuring our winning Top Performers.
