Dear Holstein Breeders, The pace of our industry is evident in everything going on at Holstein USA! In 2016, 690,000 animals were identified, more than ever before, and 18% over last year. Holstein Complete enrolled cows were up 9%. The technology project is progressing. HAUSA is investing in this new network that will result in the capability to better serve members with information, and new online tools. Already you can go to our webpage to learn all you need to know about Polled Holsteins, and our inbreeding calculator is a great way to make sure your matings stay in your comfort zone for inbreeding. Three new traits have been added to Holstein pedigrees this year. Feed Efficiency, Fertility Index, and Sire Calving Ease are now displayed on all pedigree versions for the subject, the sire, and the dam. Inclusion of these traits make it easy to use these factors in your breeding decisions. The next months will include an opportunity for attending our HAUSA Judges Conference in Stillwater Oklahoma on April 7. The Type Advisory Committee and the Genetic Advancement Committee will meet in March. These grassroots committees give our membership the ability to steer the breed into the future. Our annual convention is in Bellevue, Wash., this year from June 28 to July 1. This will be the first year of our increased delegate numbers, giving more members voice in our governing. This year from the Midwest, Dale Drendel is up for re-election to the board, and Boyd Schaufelberger is running for president. Corey Geiger from Wisconsin has declared his candidacy for vice president. It promises to be an interesting and exciting event so plan on joining everyone in Washington! he Craig and Marlene Krohlow family has made some significant strides in their already impressive herd of Holsteins since we last visited the farm in 2004. They have reached many goals while continuing to breed outstanding, high-type individuals and make their mark in the Registered Holstein industry. The Krohlows have called their Outagamie County farm home since 1978, when they started with just 13 head in their 36-cow tie stall barn. The farm is nestled on 240 acres, where Craig and Marlene grow soybeans for cash cropping, corn for cows and heifers and wheat. The barn is currently home to 33 Holsteins, including 17 Excellent and 12 Very Good, in addition to a few Jerseys that yield a BAA of 113%. The herd’s rolling herd average with Jerseys included is at 23,000 pounds milk, with a 4.1% fat and 3.1% protein test. Craig and Marlene raised three children on the farm; Tiffany, Ryan and Travis. Tiffany, her husband Nick, and daughters Brandi and Payton live in Cecil and Tiffany is a pharmacy technician. Ryan, his wife Haley and children Callie and Conway live on a farmette in Poynette. Ryan is a part of the Milksource Genetics show string staff, and Haley works for the WI Department of Agriculture. Finally, son Travis is a fitter for the Great
Northern and Budjon Farms. He also gets the Craig-Kro herd ready for shows and classifications. Even though none of the children are active in the day-to-day on the farm, Ryan and Travis have taken their own paths to remain active and successful in the Registered Holstein industry – a passion instilled in them through their parents’ drive and success in the home herd. In the last 13 years, Craig and Marlene have not only excelled in the show ring, but they are nearing in on their goal of 100 homebred Excellent cows. With that total now at 96, the Krohlows are thinking a little more about the next generation and retirement. Employee Jim Stille has been a tremendous help on the farm and is showing potential to take on a more substantial role in the future. The Krohlows breeding focus has been consistent and it shows walking through the barn. Craig and Marlene have always liked to see daughters from a bull before using the semen. They prefer cows with tremendous strength and utilize bulls with a strong cow family. Craig served as a aAa representative for eight years, and utilized the program for nearly 20 years before becoming a rep for Semex, Triple Hill and Sexing Technologies on May 1 of last year. Sires being used in the herd at this time include Absolute, Brady, Doorman, Solomon and Windhammer. Craig has really liked the Absolute daughters, and visitors can still find a few Durham daughters sprinkled in the heifer pens. One of their favorite Absolutes, Craig-Kro Absolute Peace scored EX-91 and was the winning Junior 2-year-old at the District 7 Show

Gildale Holsteins to host 2017 Wisconsin Holstein State Picnic
Craig-Cro Durham Hotsy Totsy EX-95 in 2014. She also won the Outagamie County Futurity and placed 14th as a Junior 3-year-old at World Dairy Expo in 2015. One of the bulls that exemplifies the Krohlows’ breeding theory is Craig-Kro Damion Hotrod, an EX-94 no-holes-pedigreed sire that is marketed through Triple Hill Sires. This Damion son’s first five dams average EX-92 with EX-94 udders. His dam, Craig-Kro Timber HotShot, is EX-94 with an EX-95 mammary, and at 4-06 and 362 days she produced 32,460 milk with 4.1 1325 fat and 2.9 954 protein. Hotrod’s next dams include industry-influencing sires Roy, Leader, Astro Jet, Elevation, Arlinda Chief, and Carnation, and combine for a total of 11 generations of high VG or EX. On the female side, the “Hot” and “Ash” families have done particularly well for Craig and Marlene, as they make up over 30% of the herd and include ten generations of Craig-Kro breeding back to the same brood cow. The highest scoring female from the “Ash” family is Craig-Kro Affirm Ashtine, EX-94. The second goal of Craig’s prior to retirement was to breed an EX-95 cow. He reached his mission with one of biggest impact cows from the “Hot” family - Craig-Kro Durham Hotsy Totsy, EX-95 93-MS. She was flushed to Windbrook, Sanchez, and Gold Chip, and is still in the herd at 10 years of age. Hotsy Totsy took Supreme Champion honors at the Outagamie County Fair as a three and four-year-old. She was also named Best Bred and Owned and Reserve Intermediate Champion of the District 7 Holstein Show as a young cow. The Krohlows still have some animals showing at a few junior shows and enjoy getting the local youth involved. At the 2016 Wisconsin Junior State Fair, Jen Krull exhibited the Junior Champion Holstein with a project animal from Craig and Marlene – a fall yearling named Craig-Kro Hammer Jammer. This Windhammer daughter is from a VG-87 Linjet backed by an EX September Storm, a VG-88-2Y Roy and a EX-92 Mason. Craig and Marlene also market a few select animals to local sales. This spring they have a Doorman headed to the Waupaca/Waushara Sale, as well as a fresh Absolute daughter to the Outagamie County Sale. The Krohlows have had a great run in the business, and Craig’s next adventure is running for the WHA Board. He admits it is his way of giving back to the Registered Holstein business; the business that has helped he and now his sons make a living. As Craig nears the 60-year mark at the end of the decade, he and Marlene hope to continue spending more time with the grandchildren and enjoying the next generation.
Gildale Holsteins and the Mark, Erik and Brenda Gilbertson family of Hollandale, Wis., will host the 2017 Wisconsin Holstein Picnic on Sunday, September 17, 2017. The Gilbertson family is nestled in the rolling hills of southwest Wisconsin, and milks a 50-cow herd of Registered Holsteins with a BAA of 110.1%. The Gilbertsons focus on breeding a high-type cow, and have enjoyed a large amount of success in the show ring, being named Premier Breeder and Exhibitor at the District 3 Holstein Show multiple times. Erik and Brenda are especially excited to see the next generation get involved on the farm - daughters Makenna, Elise and Naydeen. The Gilbertsons are very excited to host this state event, and will hold a tag sale in coordination with the picnic. Other activities will include the traditional dairy judging contest, activities for kids, and great food and camaraderie with Holstein breeders from across the state. The picnic is funded with the help of the Wisconsin Holstein Treasure Quest, held each spring in coordination with the Midwest National Spring Holstein Show. Make plans to join fellow WHA breeders on September 17 as we celebrate Holstein pride, family and fellowship at the 2017 state picnic.

Junior Holstein Convention Results It’s a Black and White Affair at 2017 Junior Convention The annual Wisconsin Junior Holstein Wisconsin Holstein activities in 2016. Wrapping up the photography contest was the farm animals category, where Gunnar Sperle of Jefferson County took first, Brooke Hammann of Barron County took second and people’s choice honors, and Hannah Hensel of Wood County took third in the junior division. Joseph Opsal of Dane County took first and second place, and Courtney Moser of Vernon County took third in the senior division. People’s choice in the senior division went to Hope Petersheim of Vernon County. The juniors got creative in the drawing and painting contest, and taking top honors in the junior division were Clarissa Ulness of Manitowoc County, Delaney Turgasen of Richland County and Macie Abraham of Sheboygan County, with Clarissa earning people’s choice honors. In the senior division, Amanda Gehrke of Wood County was the winning entry and people’s choice, and Jenna Broege of Rock County was second place. Also bringing out creativity were those in the crafts contest. Hannah Hensel of Wood County was first and people’s choice winner, Matthew Gunst of Dodge County was second, and Morgan Cooper of Dane County was third the junior division. In the senior contest, Courtney Moser of Vernon County took first, and Kenni Bores of Wood County was second and people’s choice winner. Each county is encouraged to submit a scrapbook of their activities throughout the year. These books are judged and awards are given to the top three counties. This year, the District 5 juniors earned top honors, and Wood County took second. Digital scrapbooks were also submitted, and the winner of that contest was Manitowoc County. The folding display contest was a huge success again this year. Individuals developed display boards to highlight activities or subjects within the dairy industry. First in the junior division was Cathryn Gunst of Waushara County, second was Macie Abraham of Sheboygan County County, and third was Christopher Gunst of Waushara County. Macie Abraham was named people’s choice in this contest. First in the intermediate division was Jared Abraham of Sheboygan County, and second place and people’s choice was Kenni Bores of Wood County. In the senior contest, Courtney Moser of Vernon County was the winning entry and people’s choice winner. The annual essay contest encourages members to write about assigned topics relating to today's dairy industry. With another outstanding number of entries in this year's junior division, taking top honors was Cathryn Gunst of Waushara County. Second was Kaelyn Weigel of Grant County, and third place went to Madison Calvert of Lafayette County. In the senior division, Brooke Trustem of Rock County was first, Allison Bragger of Buffalo County was second and Sam Minch of Wood County took third place. One of the most coveted awards, based on participation throughout the year and enthusiasm, is the Spirit award, which was given to Dodge County. The Bell-R-Ring contest was won by Rock County. For teams to be seated in the dairy bowl contest, they must take a written exam on the first day of convention. Those individuals scoring highest are recognized with awards. High scores in the junior division this year went to Kenadee Weigel of Grant County, Sam Pitterle of Dodge County, and Christina Buttles of Grant County. Recognized for high scores in the senior division were Ben Schmidt of Shawano County, Jake Siemers of Manitowoc County, and Paul Grulke of Dodge County. Courtney’s Cattle Crossing Hello Holstein Friends & Family, Who doesn’t love March Madness?! Depending on who you are, that saying certainly has different meanings. For high school and college athletes, coaches, and fans, it means tournament time with lots of cheering and support for your favorite teams and competitors. For gardeners, it means ordering supplies from seed catalogs, starting seedlings in little containers of potting soil, and just waiting to turn over the soil in the garden. On the farm, it might be the preparation for field work - greasing and repairing planting equipment, making seed purchases, and praying for early spring weather to lengthen the growing season. Perhaps you too share in one of my favorite March Madness activities, spring calves being born! It's exciting to look at the breeding wheel and think of all the possibilities for show winners, high type, and excellent 14–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/March 2017

Will the dam’s excellent frame carry over to her offspring? There are so many possibilities to ponder. March is also a great time to select and begin to work more closely with your older show animals for the months ahead. In fact, the Midwest National Spring Show held April 28-29 is right around the bend. Be sure to enter your animals by the April 1 deadline if you plan to exhibit at Spring Show. Registration for District Shows will soon follow, and it is definitely never too early to train that winter of fall calf to lead too. Before closing for the exciting and busy month of March, I want to compliment the Calumet County Holstein Association members for a terrific adult convention at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton! It’s wonderful being able to connect with our adult association and learn even more about this fantastic industry we all love. Kelsey and I had an excellent time meeting everyone there and being a part of the celebration of our Wisconsin Holstein industry. Dairy judging is strong at the University of Minnesota, so strong that its teams have placed first overall in five of the six major contests in 2015 and 2016 held at: the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). The team was 2nd (to the University of Kentucky) at Harrisburg in 2016, but placed 1st in reasons by a 16-point margin in that contest. Furthermore, over the past 7 years in these 3 contests, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st overall in 11 of the 21 contests. Michigan At A Glance Distinguished Dairymen Honored at GLRDC
Jack (left) and his brother Jim Winkel were honored with the 2017 MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year at the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference in February. As Michigan’s dairy industry gathered at the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference in February in Frankenmuth, knowledge and expertise spilled over in every direction from outstanding speakers. Nearly 400 dairy producers and industry representatives enjoyed presentations on everything from udder health to dairying down under. At the conclusion of the two day event on Friday evening, three dairy industry leaders were honored: Jim and Jack Winkel and James A. Fish, Sr. Jim and Jack Winkel were presented the 2017 Michigan State University Dairy Farmer of the Year Award by the Department of Animal Science. The Winkel’s farm is in McBain where it was established in 1899 by their grandfather, Tom Winkel who passed it on to their father Harvey Winkel. Now a Michigan Centennial Farm, the first cows milked on the farm in 1955 were in a stanchion barn. A double two parlor was built in 1963 and in 1992 a double 12 parlor was built. Today Winkel Dairy, LLC., consists of 2500 acres of alfalfa, corn and grass and 1065 Holstein cows with 1065 head of young stock. They have 26 employees including family members. The Winkel’s DHI Rolling Herd Average is 30,883 pounds of milk, 1,158 pounds of fat at 3.7% and 902 pounds of protein at 2.9% with an annual dollar value at $4,694 per cow and a Somatic Cell Count of 79,000. Jack has been involved with the operation for 38 years and with his wife Ruth they have a daughter Jessie with husband Andy Benthem and a son Jeff with wife Grace. Jim has been involved in the operation for 33 years with his wife Kim. They have two sons, Nate and Nick
who are currently employed off the farm. Jack is a hands-on person and manages the cropping enterprise and farm equipment. Along with Andy they raise the grain and forages for the herd. They are conservation-minded and utilize GPS for field applications. Jim’s main role has been managing the dairy herd and the labor aspect of the operation. Jim and Jack have been mentoring the fourth generation, making a major commitment to transition responsibilities to the next generation. Jeff oversees animal care in the milking and prefresh herd and handles the computer records. Bryce, a nephew, manages labor and nutrition and Jessie helps with herd health and works with Ruth on accounting. Both Jack and Jim are heavily involved in the community serving on boards in their local church, the local school, milk cooperatives and community groups. James (Jim)A. Fish, Sr., was honored posthumously for the Michigan Dairy Memorial and Scholarship Foundation. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree from Penn State before moving to Michigan to manage Lockshore Farms in Hickory Corners for R.F. Locke. After serving in WWII and the Korean War, Jim married Alice Berlin and purchased Lockshore Farms. An avid Guernsey en-
thusiast, Jim had one of the top Guernsey herds in the country before moving to Registered Holsteins. Jim’s passion for the dairy industry is spelled out in his leadership for breed organizations, his milk marketing cooperative and milk promotion. He served on the Board of Directors for the American Guernsey Cattle Club, serving as Vice President and was responsible for the breed implementing the use of USDA Cow Indexes for recognition of superior Guernsey females, making the Guernsey breed the first to use genetic evaluations to recognize top cows in their breed. Jim was on the boards for the Michigan Purebred Dairy Cattle Association, Farm Credit Services, and Dairy Farmers of America. He served the organizations of Independent Cooperative Milk Producers Association, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, the MSU Dairy Advisory Council, the Governor’s Milk Marketing Committee and the Governor’s Advisory council for the Michigan Dairy Industry. In 1987 Jim was named the MSU Dairy Farmer of the Year and in 1991 he was inducted into the Michigan Farmer’s Hall of Fame. Jim also served his local community at the county level and was an avid hunter and conservationist and in 2000 he was named the Michigan Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year.

MOO-ville opens The Udder Store
The Udder Store is ready to roll just 30 minutes north of the original store. By Hayleigh Geurink Dairy farming can be a complex business to run, but what happens when you have six children who all want to stay in the industry and have a variety of strengths and talents? You dream big and build a family owned and operated creamery! I had the chance to sit down with Tina Westendorp, a daughter of Doug and Louisa Westendorp, owners of Westvale-Vu Dairy and MOO-ville Creamery located in Nashville and MOO-ville, The Udder One in Ionia, to learn what it takes to become a successful, family run business! Tell us a little bit about MOO-Ville Creamery and how it operates? WESTENDORP: My parents bought the farm twenty years ago. This Memorial Day weekend will be our 12-year anniversary for MOO-ville. My parents took a chance and decided to build a creamery for our entire family to create jobs that are still in the dairy field, but instead of the milk prices dictating our year to year, they wanted us to have a little control over the prices. We sell our MOO-ville products (ice cream, cheese, milk, buttermilk, & butter) in over 120 stores throughout West Michigan. We also have a distributor in Traverse City that sells our milk throughout the state. We milk approximately 220 Holsteins with four Lely robots. My parents had six kids to be able to have a worker for each niche in the business! Carlyle (the oldest) runs the farms. Troy, the oldest twin, makes all the ice cream and works a lot with our ice cream shops that scoop the MOO-ville brand at
their locations throughout the state and he also works on the farm. Eric (twin to Troy) helps Carlyle manage the farm and works on marketing the MOO-ville brand to get it into more stores. Levi, the oldest triplet, figures out how much milk needs to be bottled, (we bottle twice a week) and makes our cheese curds, butter and buttermilk, separates the cream and tries to be up at the farm as much as possible. I, the middle triplet, manage our two store fronts (Nashville & Ionia), so I have the pleasure of doing all of the hiring, training and scheduling for both stores. In the summer we will have approximately thirty employees between both locations, just to scoop ice cream. Brittany (the final triplet) does the farm and creamery tours. In the spring we can have over 500 people touring our Nashville location and she is having her fourth baby in June. Why did you choose to open a second store location? WESTENDORP: We felt like the business and family was ready to take on another adventure. After the ten year mark, we all discussed the option and mutually agreed it was the next business move to further the growth of MOO-ville and our farm as a whole. Also, our second location is right across from the Ionia High School and we could not be more pleased with the choice of our location. How did you choose Ionia as the location? WESTENDORP: The city of Ionia is growing very rapidly and we only have our milk in one location in that area. Also, it is only 30 minutes
away from Nashville and there is only one other ice cream shop in town, so there is not a lot competition which is a huge benefit to us. Is it just a retail outlet? WESTENDORP: MOO-ville “The Udder One,” is a cute country ice cream shop where you can purchase all of our dairy products that we sell at our main, Nashville location. Customers are also able to purchase some take home goodies as well, plus whatever ice cream dessert you want! How many jobs does the opening of this store add? WESTENDORP: We are adding 10-20 jobs to the area, which consists of mainly high school students as ice cream scoopers! How has the community reacted? WESTENDORP: The community is fantastic. They have embraced us through the entire process! On opening day the line was out the door, considering it was January, we could not be happier with the love this town has for MOO-ville. How long have you been planning on opening a second store? WESTENDORP: We have been planning since 2015 and we started building in the fall of 2016. Once we all decided we were ready to go through with this next adventure and all 11 adults agreed, we decided we should run with the idea before anyone changed their mind! What obstacles have you faced? WESTENDORP: At the present our biggest problem is that we are selling an insane amount of half gallons of ice cream, so keeping up on the demand of the ice cream in pails and half gallons has been a fun “problem” to have! What victories have you enjoyed? WESTENDORP: The victories we have enjoyed is still keeping our Christian values strong and not letting society sway us otherwise. To still be able to be closed on Sundays and the fact that God still blesses us with customers Monday-Saturday (even in the summer), we could not be happier and more content. Another big victory for us is that we can keep the family working together like one unit. We have weekly family farm meetings to keep everyone on the same page. We all may work together every day, but to have communication between the farm and the creameries in two locations gets tough, but we have all managed to work through the bumps that arise. Iowa Holstein Association Awards Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award Blake & Jordan Hansen, Hudson
Blake Hansen always wanted to be a dairy farmer. After attending Iowa State for one year and then finishing his associate’s degree in Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he worked on two Wisconsin dairy farms before deciding he would be the first of his brothers to come back to the home farm. The Hansen land has been in their family since 1864. Blake and his three brothers are the sixth generation of the family to farm the land. When they talked about returning to the home farm, they decided to generate more income by starting their own on-farm creamery. The first gallon of milk was produced in February 2004, and now their product line includes whole, 1%, skim and chocolate milk; butter; cream; cheese curds; ice cream; seasonal egg nog; and ground beef. Jordan is the daughter of former Guernsey/Holstein dairy farmers Richard and Linda Drackley of rural Decorah. Her parents sold their herd at the end of her senior year at North Winneshiek High School, so Jordan never anticipated living on a dairy farm again. She graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly in 2003 with a degree in journalism and graphic design. She worked at the Waterloo Courier newspaper as a copy editor/graphic artist and met Blake by chance at a Cedar Falls bar. Blake was intrigued that she grew up on a dairy farm and the two hit it off immediately. They were married in 2005. Jordan began staying home and doing more work for the farm upon the birth of their daughter Reese (now 7). They also have a son, Beckett, 4. Blake manages the dairy herd and his three brothers handle the other main aspects of the farm: crops/nutrition, creamery processing, and sales/delivery of their products. Jordan handles bookkeeping and marketing. The business includes two dairy retail stores, a gas station, wholesale delivery to 45 retail groceries, eateries and institutions, and the farm’s Tour Center. The Hansens farm 400 acres with the majority of the alfalfa/corn yield going back into feeding the 350 Holstein cows (150 milking). They use a double-8 parallel parlor and freestall barn. Distinguished Service Award Ron Lenth, Oelwein
Purchasing a Registered Holstein heifer for a 4-H project from an area farm that performed well was a catalyst in Ron’s dairy career. Also three role models helped shape the years beyond… his father, former Clayton County Extension Director Jim Hosch, plus former ABS President Bob Walton. His brother Arlyn operates the home farm near Postville. The Lenth’s have farmed in northern Clayton County since the mid to late 1800’s. Ron spent 8 years in Clayton County 4-H, and was selected as a delegate to the National 4-H Dairy Conference in Chicago. A trip to the state 4-H Leadership Camp as a senior resulted in meeting several others who became lifelong friends, classmates, colleagues, etc. A 1970 graduate of Iowa State University with a major in Dairy Science, with additional focus on extension, Ron lived and work on various projects at the ISU Dairy Farm. He was a member of both the ISU Dairy and Livestock judging teams. At the 1969 World Dairy Expo Collegiate Judging Contest he placed fourth overall individual and second in oral reasons. His senior year he was honored by Gamma Sigma Delta, honorary agriculture fraternity. After graduation Ron joined ABS Global in their advertising and public relations department at their headquarters in DeForest, WI for six years. There he hosted several thousand tourists annually at the famous facility, while also aiding with field days, sire catalogues, and ads. His next role there was to create the first dairy sire daughter photography for commercial young sire herds. Then he served as dairy advertising director for two years. With a desire to get back into the cow and business side, Ron joined their marketing department and served as District Sales Manager, as position held for another 33 years. During that time he was responsible for recruiting, training and managing AI sales and service representatives, plus coordinating dairy and beef
3.8%F and 3.3%P. Because the Hansens operate a closed herd, Blake decided to introduce new genetics through his own personal business, Glory Road, starting in 2006. He invested in some Red and RC cows, which he houses on other farms, and integrates them into the herd by flushing and implanting the embryos. His personal herd began with Red-Vision Ad Glory-Red EX-92. She is out of the two-time All-American nominee Red-Vision Dory-Red EX-92, whose sister, Dis Della-Red, was Reserve Grand Champion Red-Holstein at World Dairy Expo in 2005. In 2005, the Hansens had an RC Jordan-Red ET heifer calf born from Pinehurst-FL Britney EX-90 by Rubens. Three years later, an Advent-sister to that calf, Cherrie-Kreek Beulah-Red, was Grand Champion at Expo. The Hansen’s Cherrie-Kreek Jo Brit Bo EX-92 is still alive today, is pregnant with her ninth calf and has Red, RC and Black progeny. Blake purchased MS Apple Juice EX-92 (Apple’s RC Goldwyn-daughter) as a calf in 2011. Apple Juice’s Mayfield-son, Apple Crisp-ET (available at Accelerated Genetics), was Blake’s first bull to go into AI and her Doorman-daughter, Apple Pucker-ET VG-86, is the No. 2 RC PTAT cow (GP or higher) and No. 5 in the breed. Blake enjoys using old genetics such as Elevation, Astronaut, Bootmaker and Mark because he sees the strength and longevity being bred out of the cows of today. He also breeds polled maternal lines to these older sires to avoid dehorning. Today they have more than 100 polled cows on the farm. They have polled Astronaut, Elevation and Bootmaker daughters today. Two Hansen cows prized for their longevity and production are Jaywood Rudolph Diet Dazzle VG-88 (Rudolph-Emory-Astre) who lived to be 14 years old and completed 317,200M, and 13-year-old Jaywood Stormatic Limit Len EX-93. She is in her 10th lactation and is close to the 300,000M. progeny test herds. Over the years, many tours came to this area to observe their offspring. Ron also provided AI training to over 1,600 farmers, employees, and college students. As herd sizes began increasing, he spent time with breeders and owners in California’s San Joaquin Valley to learn large herd reproductive management and then introduced it in this area. His district eventually encompassed 72 counties in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. In the fall of 2009, Ron began a new career with Iowa State University Extension, serving today as Bremer County Extension Coordinator, and also aiding Fayette County with educational programming. He also serves on the ISU Extension Dairy Team. He was honored with the NAACA Achievement Award at the 2013 National Extension conference. His Holstein activities are highlighted by serving as trade show chairman for both the 2001 and 2014 National Holstein Conventions in Iowa, plus coordinated the junior’s fund raiser on a Regancrest heifer for the 2001 convention. Ron received the 2004 Iowa Holstein Auxiliary’s Hall of Fame Award. Ron is very active in dairy industry activities to help current and future generations. He serves as board treasurer for the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation and state treasurer for the Iowa State Dairy Association. He also serves as president of the Tri-State Dairy Expo, which annually brings around 500 FFA students to the Iowa Dairy Center at Calmar. Ron and his wife Kathy have three grown children; Angela, who has served in the medical field in Cleveland, Jessica, who provides social service consultation in Chicago, and Jacob, who works with Magnolia Creations for home-entertainment systems in Denver. 2016 Outstanding Holstein Boy & Girl Logan Voigts
Being named the 2016 Outstanding Holstein Boy was an extremely humbling experience. To be bestowed with this award and considered amongst the people who have received this award in the past is truly an honor and something I will never forget. My black and white journey began on my family’s farm, Voigtscrest Holsteins, where we milk 75 registered cows, including 10 Jerseys. Here my parents Larry and Kim, as well as my older twin brothers Adam and Matt run the 300-acre farm located between Belmont and Platteville, Wis., in Lafayette County. My involvement on the farm began at young age, helping feed calves, brushing cows during milking, and tagging along behind people trying to help in whatever ways I could. At age seven I finally got the chance to show my first calf after watching my older sister, Carrie, and older brothers show before me. Little did I know that would be the beginning of my Holstein and dairy career, as now I have exhibited at numerous local, district, state, and national shows. Showing was just the springboard that launched me into many activities such as dairy judging, cow camps, fitting clinics, and Junior Holstein Convention. Junior Holstein Convention is what really propelled my involvement with the Holstein Association. Throughout the years I have competed in the essay contest, dairy jeopardy, and my favorite contest, dairy quiz bowl where our shorthanded three-person senior team has placed fourth and fifth the past two years. As a younger member, I took advantage of nearly every opportunity the association had, attending as many events as possible, and it became a goal of mine to someday be a JAC to provide youth with the same knowledge and experiences I had gained from prior JAC’s. Two years ago I took this large step in my Holstein involvement by being elected as a JAC. Being a JAC was undoubtedly one of the best experiences I have ever had, learning how to work effectively with a team and gaining invaluable skills for the future all while helping the youth of this great organization. After graduating from Belmont High School in 2014, I followed my heart to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Currently, I am a junior majoring in Dairy Science with a certificate in Agricultural

Business Management. I have become involved with many great organizations here on campus. Through Badger Dairy Club, I served as a grounds chair for World Dairy Expo, where I managed the student labor that keeps the pavilions clean and maintains the expo grounds in general, additionally I am one of the cattle care chairs for the 18th Badger Invitational Sale this upcoming spring. On the campus dairy judging team I have competed in the Accelerated Genetics contest where I was second high individual, and most recently at the NAILE in Louisville where I was eighth high individual overall. I am also a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, where I have been a member of the permanent finance committee, and currently serve as the Vice Noble Ruler of Management and Operations. Additionally, I have served on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences-Student Association and from this stemmed my role as a student representative on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Agricultural and Life Sciences Alumni Association (WALSAA). After graduation, I plan to use the skills and knowledge I have gained through my education along with my experiences on the home farm and in the dairy industry to pursue a career in dairy genetics, hopefully while continuing to build and develop my personal herd of Registered Holsteins. Receiving an award like Outstanding Holstein Boy is by no means an individual effort, I have many people to thank for helping me get to this point. First and foremost, my family, especially my parents who deserve all the thanks I can offer. Without their constant encouragement and support I surely would not have made it this far. My family also instilled me with a passion for the Holstein cow that I will never be able to thank them for enough as the experiences it has given me will help me throughout life and my future career. I would also like to say thank you to all my advisors and coaches, especially Bill and Kelle Calvert, who have worked with me to help develop and grow personally while picking up new skills along the way. Finally, a huge thank you to the entire dairy industry and everyone who has helped me out in one way or another. Over the years all your advice, teachings, encouragement, and support have shaped who I am today and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. To the younger members of this great association, never let go of your passion for this industry and the Holstein cow. The friends you make through this association are some of the best ones you will ever make and you will be connected with them throughout the rest of your life. It is the excitement you show that fuels the passion of the JAC’s to be the best they can, and in turn what drives the cycle that produces amazing leaders and industry people from this organization. While I am sad to end my career as a junior, I can’t wait to take advantage of opportunities to give back to it in the future. God bless the Holstein cow, this great organization, and all the people within it.

Without a doubt, I can say that being named Outstanding Holstein Girl in January was the biggest honor of my life so far. I will never be able to explain the feeling of being announced as Girl at this year’s Junior Convention as I sat up on stage amongst some of my closest friends. This award holds a lot of meaning for me because of the Association it comes from, and the outstanding Holstein people that have won it in the past. My passion for Holsteins began on my family’s 400 cow grade Holstein farm. I will always remember feeding calves there alongside my mom, sorting cows with my dad, and raising our first show heifers with my two younger sisters. At about 8 years old my parents helped me purchase my first Registered Holstein project calf. I also began participating in quiz bowl, attending Junior Convention, competing in dairy judging, and attending shows. My father unexpectedly passed away in 2011. After, my mom, sisters, and I moved to a small farmette outside of Janesville, where we raise our Holstein heifers and house our milk cows elsewhere. Our herd currently consists of about 14 animals. I am especially proud of our Rock-Edge herd because we have truly built this herd from the ground up. Recently, I am most proud of our first third generation homebred calf hitting the ground this past December. It may seem like a small feat to some, but to me it shows progress. Every Summer I look forward to attending various Holstein events, but especially enjoy exhibiting my cattle and working at the shows. Of course, leading in the ring is one of my favorite parts, but is certainly not the only. I’ve made the most memories working in the barn, on the wash rack, around the clipping chute and behind the line with some truly great people. In 2013, I decided that I wanted to be more involved with the Junior Association on a state level and ran for Wisconsin Holstein Royalty. I will never forget being told multiple times that I was “just too young” at the time and to not be disappointed if I was not named to either position. I did no let this tear me down, and I let my passion for the Holstein cow and willingness to want to do more for the organization shine through. I was named the 2014 Wisconsin Holstein Princess Attendant and in that year I met a countless number of Holstein enthusiasts, hard-working juniors, and sat ringside to some of the best Holsteins in the world. By far my greatest time spent in Junior Holsteins was spent on the Junior Activities Committee for the past two years. In this time, I learned a lot about myself as a leader and was inspired by the
Juniors I met along the way. Never did I see myself being an outgoing, public speaking, team leader. I can accredit these attributes to the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Currently, I am a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying Dairy Science with a certificate in Agricultural Business Management. On campus, I’m very involved in Badger Dairy Club, Association of Women in Agriculture, and the National Agri-Marketing Association. I compete annually on the Collegiate Dairy Judging team and am the Advertising Chair for the 18th Badger Invitational Sale. I will be interning this summer with East Central Select Sires as a Sales and Marketing Intern and after graduation will be pursuing a career in marketing dairy genetics or in another role at a bull stud. The journey to this point in my life would not have been possible without the people that have made a huge difference along the way. First, I would like to thank the outstanding Junior membership I have gotten to know for the past decade. I can truly call some of you my best friends and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would also like to thank all of the adults and mentors that have pushed me along the way. In addition to that, the people that have believed in my sisters and I at various times, whether that be at shows or housing our cattle. Lastly, but far from least, my family. Mom, thank you for being the biggest supporter to all of my ambitious dreams. To my two sisters, Jenna and Nicole, thank you for being the best two people to own, show, and breed cattle with. Watching you both show sure does make me nervous, but it also gives me goosebumps because of how proud I am of you. I would also like to thank my father for always driving me to do my best, and for watching from above the past six years. I have always been a firm believer in “when one barn door closes, a window opens on the other end”, and my Junior Holstein career has certainly taught me nothing short of that. In September I lost my favorite Holstein cow, Brunland Sanchez Dakota. The awards and accomplishments will fade, but in losing her I reflected on all of the great opportunities I had because of her. We took her to many shows at which I was fortunate enough to work with and meet fantastic youth and adults in this industry. I’ve grown to understand that the magnificent Holstein cow is what gets us into this community, but what also makes us stay are the people and memories we make along the way. I’ve loved every minute of being a Junior member, and look forward to many years of giving back, as it would be hard not to! Thank you again, I couldn’t be more honored to be chosen for this award.

Minnesota Red & White Club State Show June 22, 2017 Open to juniors from all states! The 2017 MJHA All-Breeds convention will be held on March 24-26, 2017 at the Holiday Inn, Owatonna, Minn. Members ages 9-21 will share in activities mixers, workshops, and speakers. In addition there will be contests such as dairy quiz bowl, dairy jeopardy, a public speaking contest, photo contest and a display board making contest. This is a great chance to meet new people throughout the state that share a common interest in dairy cattle. If interested in attending please contact the MHA office as soon as possible.

The MHA State Show will be held at the Mcleod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Minn. The Southwest Minnesota Holstein Association will be hosting the event and will do a great job welcoming exhibitors and spectators from near and far. Asia Named 2016 Illinois Holstein of the Year

The Illinois Holstein Association debuted a new contest that recognized an animal that had great success in 2016. This Illinois Holstein of the Year contest accepted nominations and results were based on votes from the Illinois Holstein Association’s Facebook page. Receiving the first Illinois Holstein of the Year award was Luck-E Advent Asia-RC EX-94. Asia was bred by Luck-E Holsteins, Hampshire, Illinois. She is now owned by Bert-Mar Farms, Osseo, Wisconsin.
Asia is the dam of 76HO1603 Awesome-Red and 200HO6450 Adonis-Red. Her first six daughters are ALL classified EX as 3-year-olds! Two of her daughters, Luck-E Durham Autumn-Red-ET and Luck-E Durham Avail-Red-ET, were named Honorable Mention All-American Red & White Produce of Dam. Surely a family that transmits. Luck-E Holsteins is excited to share that the first public offering from Asia will be selling on the Illinois PDCA Calf Sale on April 1st - - a March Diamondback. Congratulations to the breeders of Asia, Luck-E Holsteins, the Engel family!
Kleiner Recieves 2016 Distinguished Service Award This year’s Illinois Holstein Distinguished Service Award winner is a husband, father and grandfather who was also a dairy farmer until 1997. In his community, he has been active in his church, the local Optimist Club and county fair board. When he was farming, he served on the Prairie Farms Board of Directors and the Prairie State Select Sires Board. When he stopped farming, one of the jobs he held was as a Regional Representative for Holstein USA covering Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas. Later he helped start Dairy Agenda Today. Larry Kleiner, our favorite pedigree reader, is the winner of this year’s Service Award! Larry has helped with countless sales taking bids, reading the pedigrees and doing anything else that was needed. Throughout all of these activities he has always been passionate about quality Holstein cattle and the people who are involved with the industry. The family “behind the man” include his wife Sharon, sons Shad and Cody, their wives Liz and Robin, and Larry’s grandchildren Ella, Lila, Silas and Clayton. Congratulations Larry! This year’s Illinois Holstein Senior Breeder started his career on a dairy farm raising cows, pigs, chickens…you name it! But his love and passion was for dairy cows. He showed Guernseys in high school at county fairs, state fairs and helped fit at national shows. In 1970, he married his high school sweetheart and the following year they bought a farm and turned black and white! Over the years, they have recieved several Junior All-American nominations, one Reserve Junior All-American, three Futurity winners, a State Fair Grand Champion as well as Premier Breeder and Exhibitor at the State Fair. The family farm has produced names such as Slim Rubie, Melvin Royale, Inspiration Nellie, Broker JJ and B-J-Grove Champion Hoover. This breeder has served on many local boards as well as being a State Show Chairmen, Illinois State President, Vice President and a Director for several years. He has also written a famous book of poems. The 2016 Senior Breeders are Bruce Clanton and his wife Joyce of B-J Grove Holsteins. Bruce and Joyce have two children, Lucas and Yvonne. Lucas and his wife Michelle are the parents of Bruce and Joyce’s two grandkids Kasey and Kyle. Congratulations to the Clantons!
Heinzmann Recognized with Junior Breeder Award The competitive nature of our Junior Breeder for 2017 started when he was a young kid competing in the show ring against his siblings and playing soccer with them after chores…then playing basketball in school where he still holds the record for the most fouls in a tournament! Our Junior Breeder went to the University of Illinois and his judging team won World Dairy Expo his senior year and is still known as a team that always argued about cows. His herd is averaging 88 lbs. without BST and he has four cows classified at EX-94. Ethan Heinzmann is the Genetics Manager at Golden Oaks Farm. Despite the intense competition among siblings in his family, his brother Aaron speaks on behalf of the family when he says they are proud and amazed at Ethan’s determination and accomplishments as a leader both at the farm and in his personal family life. Ethan helps to set the direction for the herd of 650 milking cows at Golden Oaks with a RHA of 28,668lbs milk, 3.68% fat and 3.22% protein. They have classified 50 EX cows and 150 VG cows and Ethan takes the honor in breeding Golden Oaks Sid Charlise, a Sid x Golden Oaks GC Chalise x Golden Oaks Champ Rae. Charlise was named Junior Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2015 and was also selected as the 2015 People’s Choice heifer. Congratulations to Ethan Heinzman, our 2016 Junior Breeder!

I understand that the camp provides limited accident insurance, which is primary on the first $1000 and excess up to $5000. Campers are encouraged to have their own health insurance as accident insurance provided by the University is limited. I understand that any youth who does not abide by camp rules and regulations is subject to dismissal without reimbursement or recourse and any damage to facilities will be assessed to those responsible. I understand that the tuition for Badger Dairy Camp is $115. Enclosed is a $65 nonrefundable reservation fee. The reservation fee will apply to the camp tuition, and the balance will be paid at camp check-in. All checks should be made payable to Badger Dairy Camp/UW-Madison. I understand that the University may take photographs and or videos of camp participants and activities. I agree that the University of Wisconsin-Madison shall be the owner of and may use such photographs and or videos relating to the promotion of future camps. I relinquish all rights that I may claim in relation to the use of said photographs.

Nutrition Notes... Feed Efficiency in the TPI formula: Usefulness and Limitations by Kristina Weld, Graduate Research Assistant - White Lab University of Wisconsin-Madison Feed efficiency generally evaluates how effectively an animal is able to convert feed intake into energy. Much of this energy is used to make milk, but can also be used for growth, fat deposition, and maintenance of body weight. In dairy cows, one definition of efficiency is how many milk dollars are made for the feed dollars that are put in. This definition is the approach utilized in the TPI formula. There are two ways that feed efficiency can be increased: reduce input (feed costs) to get the equal output (milk income) or increase the output without changing the input. The TPI feed efficiency equation bases the input on anticipated feed intake (based on body size and production) and the output on fat and protein yield. The feed efficiency equation in the TPI formula is: (income from milk) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; (feed costs for additional milk) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; (feed costs for body size maintenance). What this means, is that as milk increases for a given cow, generally she will eat more and therefore increase in cost as well. However, she will not so much more that she negates the increase in milk income. The additional maintenance energy is based on body size. Larger cows use more energy just to maintain their body weight (pump more blood, send more nerve signals, etcetera). Thus, although larger cows often produce more milk, they also use a little extra feed energy for maintenance compared with smaller cows. The end result of the feed efficiency index is that cows with high PTA fat and protein yields relative to total PTA milk are rewarded, and larger cows are discounted compared with smaller cows. USDA calculations were used to derive the dollar values assigned to milk income and feed costs. The values are based on approximately $15/cwt milk and approximately $7/cwt for estimated feed costs. Here are calculations for two cows with different efficiency indexes:
Keep in mind when looking at the table above that since a negative body size results in a smaller cow money is saved on her feed costs, resulting in a positive number for feed costs: body size. Between these two cows there is a $29 difference in annual efficiency and 25% of that is simply due to the difference in body size composite. As the equation is based on a fixed milk price and fixed feed costs, there is some variability in the value of selecting for feed efficiency. When margins become tighter, having more efficient animals and management
styles could make the difference between being in the black or in the red. If milk price is high, even inefficient cows easily stay in the black. However, given the hills and valleys that we have been seeing in milk prices lately, it is certainly not a bad idea to give efficiency a little more weight when selecting sires. What the TPI feed efficiency calculation does not account for is that some animals can make 100 pounds of milk while eating 75 pounds of feed dry matter, while others can make 100 pounds eating just 70 pounds of feed dry matter. You might argue that by accounting for body weight and cow body fat loss/gain we can explain the difference in how much they are eating; or at least explain part of the difference in intake. However, even if we account for milk production, body size for maintenance, and gain or loss of body fat, we will find that we cannot explain all of the dry matter intake differences between cows. This difference we cannot account for is known as residual feed intake (RFI) another measurement of feed efficiency. What RFI does is account for all of the major energy uses by the cow. The TPI efficiency equation accounts for intake that is used for body weight maintenance and milk production. RFI also accounts for the use of energy for body weight gain or use of energy stores for milk production. RFI can therefore take 2 cows who are the same in PTA protein, fat, milk, and body size, and determine which one is more efficient. The TPI feed efficiency equation is not able to differentiate between these identically producing cows. RFI can do this because it is not using an assumed feed intake as in the TPI equation above. It is the expected fluctuation in intake between animals. Because of the requirement for a measured dry matter intake to calculate RFI, it is much more difficult to develop a genomic index for it, but work has begun. In summary, the feed efficiency index is a useful addition to the TPI formula to account for changes in cow intake due to increased milk production and changes in body size. However, it does not give the full picture as it cannot account for differences in RFI. In the future, we may be able to more precisely predict differences in cow animal intake with RFI, but for now the TPI formula feed efficiency calculation gives producers a starting point for selecting for efficiency.

In the event however, that any condition should arise which prevents the showing of the Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and refunds made to persons owning females that have been nominated, their share of all monied accrued after the deduction of actual expenses in the promotion of the Futurity. SALE OF ELIGIBLE ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is sold, the eligibility may be transferred to the new owner, and it shall be his responsibility to inform the Futurity Committee of the change of ownership. The seller shall inform the buyer that the animal purchased is already entered in the Futurity. To aid in this, exhibitors will receive an entry certificate for each animal after entry payment has been received. New owners will need to sign an entry form after notification of entry into Futurity. OPEN CLASS SHOWING: If the show is held at the Wisconsin State Fair, all animals shown in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity are eligible upon proper entry to be shown in the open class competition of the Holstein Show. It is the responsibility of the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s owner to fill out the necessary forms for open class competition. MISCELLANEOUS: Neither the Wisconsin Holstein Association nor the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity Committee is in any way responsible for the condition of the premises in which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss of persons or property. All matter pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulations and health requirements of any WI Holstein Association sponsored show along with those for the show at which the Futurity is held. DRESS CODE: Every exhibitor must have formal dress to show in the Futurity. (Minimum requirements for men include a shirt, tie and dress pants while women should wear a dress, business suit or the equivalent.) PURPOSE: To stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Officially Identified Holsteins of 87% RHA or higher. To promote the Registered Holstein breed and dairy industry to the general public with an appealing and memorable presentation. PROCEDURES: An animal is nominated by an owner. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner. Dates, fees and rules will be followed to the letter. ELIGIBILITY: Any Registered Holstein female that was born September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016 is eligible for the 2019 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Owners of the animal being shown must be a paid member by May 31 of the year of the show and those leading the animal must be at least 12 years old by the day of the show. FEES: Entries, along with $35 per animal, must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2016. Late entries will be accepted until April 30, 2017 for $50 per animal and late fee of $100 per animal will be accepted until August 15, 2017. Full entry fees must accompany entry form or sent within the appropriate time noted above. PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity (plus interest earned) as nomination fees, less the actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity Fund and used only for Futurity purposes. Mark Rueth & Stookey Elm Park Blackrose-ET EX-96 3E GMD DOM If you work in the Registered Holstein industry, especially as a breeder, chances are high that one cow played a special part in making the decision to have a career in agriculture. This month, WHA continues the #OneBlackandWhite campaign, focusing on that one black and white Holstein cow that had an impact on one young breeder’s life. For Mark Rueth of Oxford, Wis., Stookey Elm Park Blackrose-ET and her offspring have provided a tremendous opportunity to grown and excel in the Registered Holstein industry. Mark grew up on a small farm with grade cattle, and when he started showing in 4-H his father purchased a few ‘discount’ Registered Holsteins that sold toward the end of a few sales. Mark’s dad told him he should just spend some money and buy a good one to breed from; he’d be further ahead. That piece of advice played a key role in Mark ending up with Blackrose. Mark’s story with Blackrose started in 1990, when he was traveling and fitting in the west. He purchased Westlynn Tom Dee in August at the Washington State Fair. She eventually showed at World Dairy Expo, where she won the Guernsey 2-year-old class. Mark and Joel Kietzman had a string tied together at World Dairy Expo, where Blackrose happened to be tied in as a spring yearling. Blackrose showed that week but did not place well. In the fall, Mark worked the Elm Park sale where Blackrose was selling. He had clipped her mother at some shows; she was a massive cow with a huge head and muzzle. A Calypso daughter (a sister to Cuddles that had won earlier in the year at the Western National) also caught Mark’s eye that day, so he called Mark Van Mersbergen to see if he wanted to make a joint investment. Mark also shared his interest in Blackrose, and after sending a few pedigrees, Van Mersbergen was more interested in Blackrose. After holding the contending bidder position on the Calypso half way through the sale, Mark pushed Blackrose to his anticipated price before a contender jumped in and pushed her another $1,000 higher. He wasn’t sure he could have gone much higher, but was thankful to hold the winning bid. He called Van Mersbergen after the sale and the rest is history. Mark sent Blackrose to Indianhead, where he had some cattle housed. The next year Niles Wendorf judged the district show and made Blackrose Grand as a junior two-year-old. Following the show, Bob bought a third of

the cow and the partnership was set. Blackrose went on to have a prolific show career, earning All-American honors as a Junior 2 and 3-Year-Old, and taking Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 1995. She was Reserve All-American as a five-year-old that same year, and went on to be named the All-Time AllAmerican Junior 2-Year-Old and Junior 3-YearOld Cow. Her lifetime production credits include 1,609 days with 149,880 pounds milk, 4.4% 6,621 fat and 3.3% 4,940 protein pounds. Aside from her show credits, Blackrose produced incredible sons – Kite, Redmarker and Encore. All three of these bulls sired champions at World Dairy Expo, and many of the great cattle in the Registered Holstein business have these sires in their pedigrees. Mark’s most memorable daughter of Blackrose was Rosedale Lea-Ann, an EX-93 Kinglea Leader. The selection for red bulls at the time was slim, and on a flush to Blackrose the partners mixed semen with Milestone and Leader. Mark was thankful the resulting eggs were sired by Leader; it was a great flush that resulted in about eight calves. “Lea-Ann was a standout even Stevie Wonder could pick out. At our Rosedale sale, I counted 101 descendants selling and 100 of them came from Lea-Ann. She is something very unique from Blackrose,” Mark admits. Adding to her uniqueness is her granddaughters, Redrose and Lexington. Both of these ladies made an impact in the show ring – Redrose representing the Red and White breed for Supreme Champion honors at World Dairy Expo and Lexington becoming an All-American in her own right. Lea-Ann transmitted stature, great udders and milk, and went VG-89 in her first lactation. Mark was hesitant to sell offspring because she was used heavily for breeding and transmitted show type. Through it all, Blackrose remains a household name and one that can be recognized worldwide. Mark says, “If you brought her name up people would smile. She bred well and her sons brought in good money that helped us have the farm we have. There are many show-winning cattle and a lot of EX-96 cows, but not many have impacted the breed (in black and red) like Blackrose.” Mark admits that without a cow like Blackrose, he and wife Nicky would not have their Oxford, Wis., farm and isn’t sure what they would be doing. She helped all three partners as a great cow with a transmitting pedigree. For Rosedale, she was the main focus and brood cow that
provided Lea-Ann. Mark learned many years later that the man bidding against him for Blackrose was a cattle jockey that was given $10,000 to spend at Elm Park the day of the auction. He bought one heifer for $1800 and was told he should’ve spent the works on ‘that Blackstar daughter.’ That producer went out of business not long after the sale, so had Blackrose gone on a different trailer that day, her story would have a much different ending. It is always sad to see a great breeder herd exit the business, but Mark admits that their upcoming sale is the result of being burned out and tired. He and Nicky welcomed their first child, Paradise, last May, which he admits ads to the tired part of the equation. They felt that spring would be the time to sell and are praying for good weather. Over the years Mark has worked many sales and witnessed farmers that wait too long to sell. He and Nicky feel their herd is young and many are at an ideal age to take home and show – cows that are young, healthy, and have few problems. Their sale at the end of March will include mostly first and second lactation cows with great udders and low somatic cell counts. No matter where their next chapter takes them, Mark and Nicky are thankful for the opportunity to be a part of a legacy like Blackrose, and share her offspring and stories with the next generation.

Hey Juniors! Your Junior Activities Committee had a long meeting to plan the year for you guys! I wanted to update you all on some changes and upcoming deadlines. First off, with an increase in participants, we had to change the age requirements for cow camp. This year, we will require campers to be Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association “members, and they must be 9-13 years old as of January 1, 2017. This is a new rule that we will continue to follow in the years to come. Another change for this year is the Scrapbook contest for convention. Due to a decline in entries, we have changed the requirements for the contest. We will now be asking for only 2 or 4, 12x12 scrapbook pages. We ask that the pages include county events only (no state or national) and are titled with the county name at the top. Our goal in this change is to increase participation in the contest, and compile all entries into a “Wisconsin” scrapbook for national convention, taking the burden off of a specific county. We are also starting a featured “Member of the week” on our Facebook page! PDPW Youth Leadership Derby – Apply for a Scholarship to Attend Today!
Wisconsin Holstein will be awarding 10 junior members scholarships to attend the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin’s Youth Leadership Derby - a two-day, overnight educational experience. The program will run April 22-23, 2017 at the Colby High School. Applicants must be 15-18 years old. This is a must-attend program as youth prepare for the next step in securing an education and career in the dairy industry. Youth Leadership Derby has been designed to allow students to take a deep dive exploration in leadership, science & communication activities, while participating in dairy operation tours and hands-on breakout sessions that will benefit their future success in either an academic or work place environment. Career-building opportunities include: • Keynote speakers • Communication & team building workshops • Industry networking • Interactive leadership activities • Industry tours Students will network with both UW-Madison college students and industry leaders from around the country. PDPW prides itself in developing exceptional educational experiences, securing expert speakers, and offering a networking opportunity that is unmatched by any other organization of this caliber. National Convention Awards & Contests
For those competing at National Holstein Convention this summer, entry deadlines are approaching. In an effort to recognize more youth, Holstein Association USA Production/Breeder awards will be automatically calculated, using 2016 animal information. This includes awards for: Star Performer, Cream of the Crop, Junior Breeder of an Excellent Cow, Breeder of a Multiple “E” Cow, and 150,000 lb. & 200,000 lb. Lifetime Production Awards. Juniors are no longer required to submit entries for these awards. Dairy bowl, jeopardy and speaking contestants eligible have been notified by the WHA office. Join Us for Cow Camp 2017! Sugar Creek Camp, Ferryville • May 20-21 This year cow camp will be held at Sugar Creek Bible Camp in Ferryville, Wis., May 20-21. Our tentative schedule is for registration to start at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and getting campers settled in. We will start the next morning with our morning walking trail adventures and breakfast. There are some exciting workshops in the works, including arts and crafts, showmanship, farm safety, and more! Please note we are making some changes to requirements for youth to attend in 2017. This year and moving forward, it will be mandatory that youth and chaperones attending cow camp are members of WHA. Chaperones will also need to be approved prior to camp by the WHA staff. Finally, campers must meet age requirements of 9 to 13 years old as of January 1, 2017. We are very excited to have another great cow camp and see everyone at this year’s event. The busy spring season kicks off here in March with sales every weekend and the first show of the year at the end of April. There should be plenty of great opportunities for Holstein enthusiasts to invest in some great genetics and visit with other Holstein breeders at these events. I hope you all have a chance to get out to some of the sales and shows. Thanks to all of the advertisers that helped make this another successful Midwest Holsteins issue. I think this is our biggest one in a few years and it will be a great issue to be seen by our subscribers and those in the other Midwest states. This issue also includes the results from the Junior Holstein Convention in January. Congratulations to all who placed in the contests and won awards as well as those participants that aren’t featured on these pages. I can guarantee that the friends you make at Junior Holstein events will be some of your lifelong best friends. Next month is our Production issue and we’ll feature our Top Performer winners as well as see who will make this year’s “Top 10” lists. If you have a top producing cow you’d like to advertise, please give me a call or email by March 10. Just a reminder that second notices for membership renewals have gone out. If you are not renewed by March 15, you will not be receiving the April issue of the News. You can call our office at 1-800-223-4269 to renew by credit card or mail a check to the Baraboo address. And don’t forget that if you want to show at the summer shows, your membership will need to be renewed by May 1 or there will be an added $50 late fee. There are some exciting calves entered for this year’s Treasure Quest, featured on page 16 and 17. If you are interested in purchasing a TQ ticket, please contact the WHA office or any of the board members. The winning ticket holder will get their choice of the six calves.
