Obituaries Leland Gunst Leland W. Gunst, age 77, of the Town of Herman, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Aurora Medical Center in Hartford. Leland was born February 12, 1933 in the Town of Herman to Walter and Adeline (nee Zirbel) Gunst. He was united in marriage to Elaine Koepsell on August 26, 1962 at Zum Kripplein Christi Lutheran Church. Leland farmed his whole life and loved working the farm. He was a member of the N.F.O., a 4-H Dairy Leader, a 50-year member of the Holstein Association and held various leadership positions with the Dodge County Holstein Breeders. Many people knew Leland from his selling of seed corn for 15 years. He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Huilsburg and was very active in his church serving as church elder, church president and school board director. Besides working, Leland enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers, but beyond all these things his joy in life was his family. He is survived by his wife Elaine (nee Koepsell); his children Noreen (Larry) Dogs of Theresa, Curtis (Carrie) Gunst of Hartford, Willis (Carla) Gunst of Poy Sippi; and Dennis (Nichole) Gunst of Theresa; nine grandchildren, Daniel (Alyssa), Sarah (Joshua), Michael (Katherine), Katherine Dogs, Cody Gunst, Matthew and Elizabeth Gunst, Cathryn and Christopher Gunst; a great grandson William Dogs; his sisters, Dorothy (James) Dorst of Mayville and LaVerne (Kenneth) Schulz of Iron Ridge; his sisters-in-law Arlene Ohland of Hartford, Lorraine Hahn of Hartford, Marian (Ronald) Brandt of Cedarburg, Edna (Robert) Schultz of West Bend and Marlis Glamann of Florida. He is further survived by nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Leland was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law Marvin Ohland and Earl Hahn. Memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or the charity of one’s choice are appreciated.
Randy Eberle Randy J. Eberle, age 44, of Monroe, died Thursday, January 27, 2011. Randy was born February 27, 1966 in Monroe, the son of Verlen J. and Lois (Kant) Eberle. Randy graduated from Monroe High School in 1984 and U.W. Agriculture short course in 1985. He farmed all his life in Clarno Township. He married Stacy Schultz on September 12, 1992 in Monroe. Randy was a member of the Clarno Zion United Methodist Church, Clarno 4-H, and Monroe FFA/FFA Alumni. He is survived by his wife, Stacy Eberle of Monroe; four daughters, Amanda Eberle of West Bend, WI, Maria Eberle, Josie Eberle, and Carli Eberle, all of Monroe; his mother, Lois Eberle of Monroe; a sister, Barbara Marean of New Glarus; five brothers, Jene (Susan) of Monroe, Andy (JoAnn) of Juda, Terry (Cathy) of Durand, IL, Tim (Sue) of Madison, and John (Wendy) Eberle of Monroe; 10 nieces and 7 nephews. He was preceded in death by his father in 1995; and maternal and paternal grandparents. Randy’s family wishes that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a
Joan Mueller, 55, of Cuba City, WI, died Tuesday, February 8, 2011, at UW-Hospital in Madison. She was born on August 22, 1955, the daughter of Gerald and Marjorie (Splinter) Vosberg in Hazel Green, Wisconsin. She married James J. Mueller on October 16, 1976 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. Joan lived for her cows. She touched the lives of many young people both through her activities in and out of the show ring. Joan was known as “Mom” and “Aunt Joan” to many young people who were not blood relatives. She was an “animal person”. Joan enjoyed playing euchre, and was known as “Sparkle Lady” because she loved everything that glittered. Survivors include her husband, Jim; a daughter, Tami, of Fitchburg; a son, Brian, of Cuba City; and four brothers, Carl (Vicki) Vosberg, of Georgia, Louie (Ruthie) Vosberg, of Cuba City, Richard (Virginia) Vosberg, of Shullsburg, and Bill Vosberg, of Lancaster. Charles John Mikulice Charles John “Charlie” Mikulice, age 78, of Manitowoc, WI, died October 11, 2010. Charlie was a 50 year member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association. He started his life-long love for Holsteins in Waukesha County at Gramling Homestead Farm. Through the years, he managed several farms such as Ravenglen in Antioch, IL, and Noble Heritage Farm in Mt Vernon, OH, where he had his 1st All-American nomination in 1969. He owned and operated Noblecrest Farms is Casco, WI, where he bred and showed his 1st All-American in 1987, the yearling bull Noblecrest Warden Joshua. He was a member of the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church and leaves behind his wife, Carole, five children, Tom Mikulice, Ron Mikulice, Mike (Linda) Mikulice, Dan Mikulice and Chrissy Mikulice as well as several grandchildren and great grand-children, brother Richard (Alice) Mikulice and sister Joan (Jim) Everett. Charlie will be greatly missed doing his favorite pastime, watching the cows parade around the showring.

By the time you read this, the 120th Wisconsin Holstein Annual Meeting will be history. Lynn Harbaugh, Bob Traynor and I have completed six years on the state board. New directors have been elected. Thank you to everyone who put his/her name on the nomination ballot. Your WHA board is dedicated to serving you and is always willing to hear your input and concerns. Thank you for all of your time and effort in serving the Wisconsin Holstein Association. WHA committee members and volunteers are a vital link to get the work of your association planned and implemented. Thanks to all of you for your work this past year. 2011 WHA Barn Meetings The Wisconsin Holstein Association invites all members and area dairy farmers to the 2011 Barn Meetings. Featured speakers at this year’s barn meetings will be Dr. Matt Dorshorst & Dr. Chris Booth on reproductive tools for your herd. Four locations have agreed to be host farms for these barn meetings. Paradise-D Holsteins Dan & Nancy Pagenkopf Family, Lancaster The Dan and Nancy Pagenkopf family of Lancaster, has been involved in the Registered Holstein industry for over 25 years. They currently milk 130 Registered Holsteins, and their cows are housed in a 58-cow tie stall barn and a 97-cow free stall facility. The Pagenkopf ’s rolling herd average is 26,500 lbs milk on twice a day milking. They operate a combined 500-acres that are owned and rented, and raise 125 heifers and 60 bulls annually. The milking herd is fed a TMR. Paradise-D is truly a family operation. Dan and Nancy’s oldest son Craig is the full-time herdsman and maintains proper feed balancing and nutrition for the entire herd, as well as providing cattle comfort and care. Craig also helps with general field work and farm maintenance. His wife, Ela, works part-time on the dairy and manages DHI records and herd profiles. The Pagenkopf ’s second oldest son, Scott, is involved in advertising and marketing, and manages the new farm website he has designed. Scott supplies updates for the promotion of dairy animals while attending UWLaCrosse to study accounting finance. Also involved on the farm is the youngest, daughter Andrea, who is the calf manager and is involved in birthing, vaccinations, and registering animals on EASY ID. She also assists in the health care of the herd, and is attending UW-Platteville studying pre-veterinary medicine. The Pagenkopfs have two additional part-time employees, Justin Olson and Elisa Petershiem, who are mainly relief milkers. The Paradise-D herd is highlighted by Paradise-D Goldwyn Gilda, a full sister to Paradise-D Gilmore at Semex USA. Andrea had success in the show ring last year with Paradise-D Shotl Glystal, who was named 6–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/March, 2011
Reserve Junior All-American for 2010. There are several other family members of proven bulls in the Pagenkopf ’s barn, including siblings of Sparta, Suede, Swift, Mast, and Paradise. Dan and Nancy and family have been marketing Registered Holstein bulls and embryos both domestically and internationally since 1995. Their main goal is to continue to breed and develop strong cow families that interest both the local dairyman as well as the A.I. industry with profitable genetics including production, type and longevity. The Pagenkopf family is excited to host a barn meeting, and hopes that Holstein breeders will come out for a great fellowship opportunity.
Forest Ridge Holsteins, Kurt & Sarah Loehr, Eden Kurt and Sarah Loehr of Eden, are no strangers to the Registered Holstein business. Kurt has been involved with Registered Holsteins since 2003, and Sarah, a past WI Holstein Girl, has been involved since the age of nine. Kurt and Sarah met at World Dairy Expo in 2004 and were married in October 2010. Kurt’s parents, Randy and Ellen, also help on the farm - Randy works full time, while Ellen holds a job off the farm. Kurt and Sarah also have several part time employees along with Kurt’s brother, sister, and grandmother who help when needed. Kurt and Sarah are currently serving as Fond du Lac County Junior Holstein advisors and co-chairs for the 2011 WI Championship Show, being held in Fond du Lac. Kurt is also on the Fond du Lac County Holstein board. Forest Ridge Holsteins is home to 100 milking females and 140 heifers. Currently, 50% of all animals are registered with the remaining half sire ID. The current herd average is 25,500 pounds milk with 3.8%F and 3.1%P. Kurt and Sarah’s current (and first) BAA in October 2010 was 109.9%. The Loehrs run approximately 700 acres of hay and corn, and all crop work is done jointly with Kurt’s uncle who farms a half-mile away. Forest-Ridge is home to a full sister and maternal sister of Rosedale Lexington, VG-89 Res. AA Junior two-year-old in 2010. The Loehrs also have a full sister to Van-Goh Durham Treasure EX-95, Nominated AllAmerican; a Rubens daughter from Greenlea Rub Marlene-Red, EX-94 and Champion of the International Red and White Show at WDE; and several descendants of Stelbro Michelle Rubens 3E-93, Nominated Red and White All-American 2004, including her daughter Forest-Ridge Minnie, EX-93, who was Nominated Red and White All-American in 2009. Additional cows of interest include Krull Goldwyn Echo, VG-88 and daughter of Krull Elegant Rose, 2E-93 GMD DOM, and granddaughter of Elegance. Forest Ridge Drake Jemma, EX-90 EX-94 MS at 3-06, has seven generations of EX behind her going back to GBM Valiant Starbuck Janice, EX-94 3E. Wegnerlann Durham Geneva, VG-87, is from the Gabby family at Wegnerlann Holsteins, as well as Wegnerlann Miss Universe, fourth and Best Bred and Owned Winter Yearling at the 2010 WI Championship, who is due early March and goes back to Sarah’s very first purchased calf at age 11. The Loehrs open their doors to everyone to see their new and updated facilities. They moved into a brand new special needs barn in December, their tie-stall barn was remodeled in 2008, and their calf barn is just six years old. Kurt and Sarah try to emphasize that with excellent cow comfort, longevity and productivity will provide financial compensation.
Harmony-Ho Dairy, Ralph & Sharon Bredl, Stratford Harmony-Ho Dairy has been home to Ralph and Sharon Bredl since the purchase of the 60-cow dairy in 1989. They constructed their first free stall barn and milking parlor in 1994, and by 1999, a new parlor and free stall addition were built to accommodate the herd’s current size of 415 milking animals. Harmony-Ho has become a very diverse operation, and in 2000, the Bredls formed a joint herd sire marketing enterprise with Badger Holsteins of Unity, Wis. They sell 80 breeding age bulls annually. In 2004, their daughter Martine joined the farm after graduating from UW-River Falls. In 2007, Harmony Specialty Dairy Foods was established with the purchase of a local cheese plant, and the Bredls began producing cheese from the Harmony-Ho milk supply. Harmony Specialty Dairy Foods now produces several varieties of cheese, all of which will be available for sampling during their barn meeting.
The Bredl family will be showcasing Genex Genesis cows. Genesis refers to a nucleus of herds utilizing breeding strategies and genetic or reproductive technologies to produce elite, highly profitable males and females resulting from embryo purchases, designated by the CRI suffix, combined with Genex owned females identified with the co-op prefix. In 1999, Harmony-Ho began housing the elite females to provide an unbiased environment. The Bredl’s 415 milk cows have a rolling herd average at 29,369M with 3.89 1144F and 3.05 894P. Their herd pregnancy rate is 22%, with a voluntary waiting period of 75 days. The Bredls breeding program focuses on TPI, in addition to udder and feet and leg composite. Ralph and Sharon own and operate over 450 tillable acres, and purchase any additional feed needed. Harmony-Ho is excited to host a 2011 barn meeting, and their featured speaker will be Matthew Dorshorst, DVM.
Welsh-Edge HolsteinsRalph & Sheila Petersheim Family, Viroqua The Petersheim family at Welsh-Edge Holsteins has been a family run operation since Ralph and Sheila married in 1985. Their family includes six children and a son-in-law, Heather and Mike Metzler, Derek, Daniel, Heidi, David, and Hope. All children are involved part-time in the operation. The Petersheims moved to their current location in southwest Wisconsin in 1995. Before purchasing their Vernon County farm, they rented Ralph’s home farm in Pennsylvania, which was nestled along the Welsh Mountain (where the farm’s prefix was born). They sold their herd before moving to Wisconsin, and purchased the grade herd that was on the farm. Ralph and Sheila did, however, bring a load of heifers and calves as well as Welsh-Edge Leadman Ginger. Welsh-Edge has become a 100% Registered herd once again since their relocation. Welsh-Edge is home to 90 milking females in a remodeled 70-cow sand bedded tie stall barn. The herd’s rolling herd average is right at 21,000 pounds milk, with 3.7%F and 3.0%P. The BAA is 108%, with 16 Excellent, 32 Very Good and 29 Good Plus cows. The Petersheims pasture the milking herd extensively during the growing season. Their desire is to remain profitable but not necessarily to break records. Ralph and Sheila accomplish remain profitable by grazing and feeding high forage diets, which translates into healthy, low maintenance, cows with great longevity.
Approximately 70% of the cows that leave Welsh-Edge are sold for dairy purposes, which greatly enhance the farm’s bottom line. Ralph and Sheila have invested in several cow families over the years, including DRA-August, Bic Betty, Blackrose, and Rudolph Amy. While they enjoy working with these families and their offspring, their favorites remain in their Ginger family. This family continues to easily transmit true dairy strength and high scoring cows. The Petersheims are milking daughters of Durham Gingerheart, EX-92 3E, by Astronomical (EX-91), Roy (EX-92, EX-90, VG-86, and GP-80 at 2 years, with none lower), Stormin Norman (VG-86, VG-85, VG-85) Stormatic (VG-85), and an exciting Plaid that needs to see a classifier. They have consigned four calves to sales out of Durham Ginger by four different sires, and three of them are EX for their new owners. The fourth is VG-88 at two years of age. This family was also responsible for Petersheim’s Premier Breeder & Exhibitor banners at the District 2 Holstein Show last year. The Petersheim family is greatly looking forward to hosting the Spring Barn Meeting and the time they can spend meeting other Holstein breeders.
Barn Meeting Featured Speakers Dr. Chris Booth is a food animal veterinarian and partner at Dairy Doctors Veterinary Services located in Plymouth. He provides medical, surgical, and production medicine services to clients ranging from 50-3000 cows, while helping them maximize animal health, production and profitability. Dr. Booth frequently provides training sessions for clients in the areas of transition cow care, milk quality, and reproduction management. His discussion at the barn meetings will involve utilizing available reproductive tools to meet your herd’s reproductive goals. Dr. Matthew Dorshorst is a 2005 graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison Veterinary School. Matthew and his father Charles Dorshorst operate a veterinary clinic in central Wisconsin as well as the farm. Matthew specializes in embryo transfer and reproductive ultrasound as well as other advanced reproductive procedures, including in-vitro fertilization. His topics for the barn meetings will include a brief summary of current reproduction protocols and the use of ultrasound in herd health reproduction programs. He will also discuss an overview of embryo transfer and other advanced reproductive techniques.

Tom and Jerry have been able to successfully market offspring from this family in live sales, including a Goldwyn daughter at Krull Farms, two Bolton daughters, and two Baxter daughters. One of her Bolton daughters, Mission-Bell Bolton Dezi-ET, VG-86, is owned by Kellercrest Holsteins in Mount Horeb, and carries four A.I. contracts. One of Direct’s Baxter daughters calls Bosside Holsteins home in Colby. Direct’s lifetime production includes 133,895M with 4.1F and 3.1P. She has also sent Goldwyn sons to Genex, Accelerated Genetics, and Select Sires, and has a Baxter son at Select. The seventh generation of Mission-Bell breeding in this line is MissionBell James Damali, EX-90 EX-MS at three years of age. Damali has one Baltimore daughter in the herd, and her most recent completed record at 3-05 and 365d produced 34,305M with 4.3 1468F and 3.0 1043P. Of these sires, the Jens’ have two Excellent and three Very Good Boss Irons, two Excellent and three Very Good Champions, and three Excellent and nine Very Good Hi Metro daughters. Their Baxter and Bolton daughters look good as well. The Jens’ heifer pens consist of daughters by Goldwyn, Sanchez, Sidney, Dollar Boy, Baxter, Redlou, Linden, Shaq, and Baltimore. Young cows include daughters by Damion, Advantage, Falcon, Pontiac, Colby, Mac and Spirte. Tom and Jerry tend to use aAa mating on their herd, with a focus on high type cattle that live a long time and make a lot of daughters. They typically only use genomic bulls that are high on sire lists and hail from outstanding cow families. The Jens family is content with the size of their herd, and has no immediate plans for expansion. They continue to purchase individuals every now and again, and market their genetics to support other sales and breeders. Integrity is especially important to Tom and Jerry – they market the best to promote their individuals and anticipate a high level of performance in other herds. Junior Holstein Convention Results Wisconsin Holstein Youth “Get to the Point” in 2011

The annual Junior Holstein Convention was hosted by the Wood Distinguished Junior Members. The Younger County Juniors in Stevens Point at the Holiday Inn and Convention Member delegates include Jessica Pralle of Center, January 8-10, 2011. Over 500 Holstein members, chaperones, and Clark County, Brooks Hendrickson of Green County, and Jordan Siemers and Crystal volunteers were in attendance to help make the weekend a huge success. Throughout convention, junior members participated in numerous Siemers-Peterman, both from Manitowoc County. The 2011 Wisconsin Holstein Princess and Attendant were also contests, including speaking, arts and crafts, photography, dairy jeopardy, and dairy quiz bowl. The largest competition of the weekend was dairy crowned at the Sunday evening banquet. Outstanding Holstein Boy - Jacob Brey
I was completely shocked when I heard my name announced as the Outstanding Holstein Girl at the 2011 Junior Holstein Convention. I am honored to be chosen amongst a list of very deserving candidates and distinguished past recipients. It is literally a dream come true for a girl who loves her Holsteins as much as I do and has enjoyed her opportunities to learn and grow through Junior Holstein. I am very appreciative and humbled to receive this award. My parents are Frank Jr. and Ruth Bauer, and I have three younger brothers, Ethan, Seth and Ryan. I call Sandy-Valley Farms home. This 400-cow dairy farm is owned by my father, and his two brothers, David and Patrick. My Uncle Greg manages our merchandising program and I assist him in this area. Our farm sends up to 60 bulls to A.I. a year, and we merchandise embryos world-wide. My main responsibility on the farm is calf management. I am responsible for calves from birth to breeding age. I also coordinate our extensive embryo transfer program in which we flush over one hundred animals a year. I currently own 15 animals with my brother, Ethan, and cousin, Katie. I look forward to improving and merchandising our small herd. I continue to learn and expand my role at our farm and I hope to become the next generation to carry on the Sandy-Valley prefix. I plan on taking business and dairy classes at Fox Valley Technical College while continuing an active role on the farm. I have enjoyed being involved in activities at church, 4-H, FFA, and Junior Holstein. On a state level of Junior Holstein, I have participated in the Junior Trip, judging, photography and advertising contests, Cow Camp, dairy bowl, and DJM recognition. On our county level I serve as president and enjoy helping with our Calf Sale every year and participating in other various activities every year. As a homeschooled student, I have gone a bit out of my way to be involved in FFA and have earned awards for my dairy involvement. I have really enjoyed my role as a dairy leader for our 4-H club. I love helping kids pick out calves to take to the fair, showing the kids how to get their calves ready, and helping them work on showmanship skills. I was delighted when my cousins, Katie and Emily Bauer, placed first and second in the same showmanship class; the judge was thoroughly impressed with their skills. Katie also did very well at State Fair, placing 3rd overall in her age division. It was great to think that I had some part in that. I thank God for the very supportive family He has given me in my mom, dad, and three brothers. I appreciate their willingness to let me skip out on chores for fairs, dairy judging, and 4-H and Junior Holstein activities. I am also very thankful for the support of my aunts, uncles, and cousins who have also allowed me to take time away from chores at the farm and have encouraged me as well. I have benefitted from having very supportive Junior leaders in Brenda Long, Sandy Cordes, and Carla and Willis Gunst. Clint Beyer and Bruce Hoeft were very instrumental in encouraging my interest in dairy
Receiving the Outstanding Holstein Boy award had been a goal of mine since a Junior Holstein convention seven years ago when I saw my older brother receive the honor. I distinctly remember thinking to myself about how neat it would be to someday stand up at that podium just like Tony was doing. I feel that receiving this distinction is owed to the many people that have helped me even become a part of the discussion to receive the award. It has been a very humbling experience throughout, and I feel like one of the most fortunate young men to have such a strong family and supporting group to be involved with. My name is Jacob Brey and I am the 20 year old son of Bill and Clarice Brey. I have three older sisters, Christy (Nathan) Vogel, Angie (Mark) Ulness, and Katie (Menno) Huiser, as well as my brother Tony and his wife Moriah. Currently I am attending UW-Madison as a sophomore majoring in Dairy Science with an emphasis in Business. On campus I am active in the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, the Badger Dairy Club, the dairy judging team, and storming the Kohl Center and Camp Randall whenever #1 Ohio State decides to come to town. Seeing my older siblings come to Madison, I did as well, and it has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. Cycle Farm in Sturgeon Bay is where I call home. Currently there are about 230 milking registered Holstein cows and close to 300 head of young stock. I enjoy assisting in any way I can when I am here at school, whether it be deciding which bulls to purchase for matings or sending ideas back home that I may learn in class. We run around 750 acres of alfalfa, corn and winter wheat. Undertaking nearly all of the fieldwork ourselves becomes a bit challenging at times, especially when hosting a State Holstein Picnic is in store, but it was extremely rewarding to see the hard work pay off this past summer. I owe my parents a great deal for teaching me to have a level head and to work hard; to see my projects through completion and to give them my fullest attention and effort. I became extremely active in 4-H, FFA and Jr. Holstein by simply following in the footsteps of what my older siblings did back in their days. Therefore, participating in activities such as dairy judging, dairy bowl and showing became a mainstay in my youth. However, being the competitive person that I am always pushed me to want to improve. I tried to never feel content with how the results ended, whether it was standing near the top of a class with a heifer or especially after giving a bad set of reasons. I learned a lot by watching and asking questions to the people I thought were stand-up individuals in whatever they were doing, and I would like to thank them for that. My family is who I need to thank the most for growing me not only into the Junior Holstein member I have become, but more importantly the individual that I am today. My parents always encourage me to work smart and hard and to develop a strong work ethic. They instilled in me a valuable lesson as a young person that good things happen to good people. My sister Christy and her family show me to have a strong faith and to remember where I come from. My godmother Angie and brother from another mother Mark are two of my biggest fans, coming to support me at nearly every event. They are great role models

I would like to encourage juniors to set goals and dream big. Do what you love, learn from others, work hard, and you can accomplish anything. You might surprise yourself. I did!
Jacob Brey, continued for me in the dairy industry and are growing a great young family. Katie gives me the impression to be open-minded and to not be afraid to try new things that may go against the grain. I also owe a huge thanks to my favorite older brother Tony. I enjoy our daily talks and how you are like Bret Beilema and dad is like Barry Alvarez; always trying to recruit me, as in this case, to come back to the farm. I also can’t forget to give a shout out to the biggest member of our family, the Lord, for guiding me in everything that I do. My time in the Junior Holstein Association has been unforgettable. I need to thank all of the leaders from Door County as well as the state and national level for presenting me with the opportunity to be involved in such a great organization. I would like to thank the judges for presenting me with the award, especially given the competition. Whether I do return home after college or pursue a goal of mine to become a classifier for Holstein USA, I will use this accomplishment as yet another step within my time in the dairy industry. Finally, to the young members out there, I would hope that you realize we are involved in this association to have fun and make friends, so don’t let anything get in the way of that!

WISCONSIN MADISON Dairy Science STUDENT PROFILE Name: Mason Amundson Hometown: Mount Hope, WI High School: River Ridge High School Class Size: 62 Farm: Nordic-Ridge Holsteins, 120 dairy cows Major: Dairy Science Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I wanted to take advantage of the opportunities that a large school can offer a student. Getting out of my small hometown and meeting new people was also what helped me decide that the UW was the school for me. What has been your most memorable college experience? Badger football game day has always been a good time with friends that I will never forget and I look forward to returning as an alumni. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course has been Dairy Science 375 with Dr. Wiltbank. This class has given me the opportunity to practice basic dairy cow reproductive practices. I was also able to learn the science behind today’s reproductive protocols and learn how to use them to maximize a dairy’s potential. What are your future career goals? My dream is to become a large animal veterinarian and practice here in Wisconsin. I want to specialize in dairy cow reproduction and maybe someday own my own embryo transfer business.

District Show Showmanship Contest This summer the JAC’s will have a showmanship contest at each of the nine district shows. The contest will have three age divisions at district shows, including a 10 and Under, Junior (age 11-15), and Senior (age 16-21) division, with ages as of January 1, 2011. The top three in the Junior and Senior divisions at each district show will be eligible to compete at the WI Championship Show Showmanship Contest, to be held following the heifer show in Fond du Lac on July 11. Awards and a judge will be provided by the JACs, and an ice cream social will be held after the contests. Watch for more details in the May issue of the News!

Welcome to another special Midwest Holsteins issue - March 2011 is the 5th anniversary of our inaugural Midwest Holsteins issue. It’s been a joy to work with the other Midwest editors over the years and I am proud to say we’ve provided Holstein Breeders across five states expanded advertising opportunities for a reasonable price. I hope you’ll enjoy reading through the ads in this issue. I’m excited to announce that full issues of the News are now available online. You can access the electronic version of the News by going to the Publications tab on the WHA website www.wisholsteins.com - and clicking on “This Month’s Features”. Click on the picture of this month’s cover and it will take you to the current issue. This month’s issue contains info about the upcoming Barn Meetings I hope you’ll take an afternoon to come to one of the meetings. We have four great herds lined up as hosts and two respected young vets, Dr. Chris Booth and Dr. Matt Dorshorst will be featured speakers at the meetings. More information and directions to each farm is printed on page 6. Next month will be our Production issue and will feature Top Performer winners, 300,000 and 400,000 lb. lifetime cows and results from the Adult Convention. If you have a late spring sale consignment you’d like to advertise give me a call by March 10. Our May issue will be our “Genomic Stars” issue - so if you have a special cow or heifer you’d like to advertise please give me a call by April 11. If you haven’t heard, Ashley Yager has left WHA for a job at ABS Global. We will miss her greatly at WHA and wish her the best of luck in the future. I’d like to personally thank Ashley for all her hard work on articles and special features for the News the last four years and all her work to promote WHA and it’s members. It’s been an honor to work with you and I appreciate everything you’ve contributed to WHA.
