Wisconsin Holstein Briefs J Congratulations to the Wisconsin Juniors who have been named Holstein USA’s DJM Semi-Finalists: Danae Bauer, Scandinavia; Mitchell Kappelman, Two Rivers; Kelly Lee, Johnson Creek; and Carl Lippert, Pittsville. Wisconsin also has two Younger DJMs: Jessica Pralle of Humbird and Crystal Siemers-Peterman of Cleveland. I Congratulations to Michelle (Vosberg) and Casey Pickel, Lancaster, on the birth of their daughter, Ainsley Theresa on April 4, 2011. Ainsley weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz. and was 20 inches long. I Congratulations to Anne and Chris Stanton who welcomed a baby girl, Elsie Ardes, on March 19. She weighed 8 lbs. 8oz. and was 21 inches long. Grandparents are Charles & Donna Dorshorst, Junction City, and David & Lori Stanton of Wisconsin Rapids. I Another new baby in the Dorshorst family was born 20 hours later! Obituaries David Delfosse David Delfosse, 60, of Brussels, a most beloved Grandpa and Dad met the Lord on Monday, March 28 2011. He was born August 26, 1950 in Brussels, to Robert and Armaine Delfosse. The family farmed in Brussels. Growing up a farm boy never left David’s soul. In 1975 David, his wife and his one year old daughter started their own dairy in Brussels, Delstar Holsteins. Beginning with just a handful of grade cattle, David grew his farm into a Registered herd of 50 milking cattle, raising young stock and harvesting 250 acres. With hard work, successful breeding and his infatuation for the showring, David successfully showed at the County Fair, District Show, State Fair and World Dairy Expo through his years as a dairyman. David’s most prized award was his years of Progressive Breeder accomplishments. He always believed anyone can just buy a prestigious Registered cow, but only a true heart and soul dairyman can breed the dam with correct mating, calve out a heifer, raise God’s animal and be able to praise her with honor in that showring. After ending his farming career in 1994, David lived on as a dairyman. He received his certification as a dairy judge, which his family always told him he would be great at. David judged county fairs all over Wisconsin and was always called back a second year. Children who had their cattle judged by him found comfort in his smile, patience and words of wisdom in the ring. David carried on his graces at one of his favorite places; The Door County Fair. Here, David was the face that everyone knew. He always took showing very serious and with great dedication. His grandchildren were taught to show with Grandpas hands. David was head of Little Britches every year at the fair and took on the job with joy and honor. His only son, Adam Delfosse had bought the family farm in 1996 and carried on his dad’s trait of breeding strong Registered dairy cattle. David was reborn again when he and Adam went into partnership with numerous Registered cattle. The world never knew a man so in love with the Registered holstein cow and the family farm. David is sadly missed every day by his daughter Mindie Overbeck, son-in-law Travis and their children Mitchell, Faith and Brodie; son, Adam Delfosse, daughter-in-law Megan and their children, Ethan, Ashlyn and Aiden; daughter, Danielle Ware, son-inlaw, Tom and their children, Moriah, Gracie and Taylor. 8–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/May 2011
David’s nine grandchildren captured his heart in every way. Life will not be the same to go on without a Papa. Grandpa David was truly the best kind of Papa. He gave so many gifts to his little angels; his gift of laughter, protection, affection, cheering on, listening, and complimenting. Every basketball game will have an empty bleacher were their biggest fan always cheered, every soccer, softball, hardball game and track meet will have an empty lawn chair, every fair will miss the wash rack warrior and only his hands that could do those detailed top-lines and fix that halter for showmanship. David will live on forever in his grandchildren by the many simple gifts he gave them. Dad always said; heaven on earth to him was either his grandchildren laughing or cows grazing with a church in the backdrop. May we all find this kind of simplicity as beautiful as he did.
Marion Brown Marion V. Brown, 81, of West Salem, passed away Friday, April 1, 2011, at Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. She was born October 18, 1929, at home on the family farm near South Beaver Creek, Wis., to Albert and Magnhild (Arneson) Kamprud. Marion was a graduate of Melrose High School. On May 8, 1948, she married Bert Brown at the Brown Family Farm in Melrose, Wis. She and her husband farmed in Melrose and Marion also worked at the Bank of Melrose until 1956. They then moved to a farm two miles north of West Salem, where they lived and worked until 1996 when they sold the farm and moved into their new home in West Salem. Marion was a loving and giving person who was active in, the Presbyterian Church of West Salem, the Neshonoc Walker Homemakers for over 50 years, the Lakeview Health Center Auxiliary, the Red Cross Blood Mobile, and she also volunteered at Mulder Health Care Facility. She loved cooking, sewing, gardening, quilting, reading, traveling, camping, and she especially loved her grandchildren and great-granchildren. Survivors include her husband of almost 63 years, Bert; her daughter, Sue (Brown) Winterfield of West Salem; her grandson, Andrew (Rebecca) Lipski of Westby, Wis.; her granddaughter, Stacy (Daniel) Sandhoefner of Burnsville, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Ryan Sandhoefner of Burnsville and Jack, Cooper, and Hudson Lipski, all of Westby; and many nieces and nephews. Marion was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Linda; an infant son, Bruce; three brothers, Oscar, Minard, and Lester Kamprud; and four sisters, Nora Olsen, Elsie Burnett, Dorothy Gundersen, and Irene Jones.
Richard Kruschke Richard E. Kruschke age 85 a life-long resident of New Richmond died Monday, April 4, 2011 at his home. He was born the son of George and Rosetta (Ausman) Kruschke on September 24, 1925 in New Richmond. In 1943, he graduated from New Richmond High School and then served his country in U.S. Navy during WWII. On September 4, 1948, Richard married Ida Freeberg. He served on the St. Croix County Fair Board for 20+ years and was president for two years of the State Holstein Board. Richard also served on the New Richmond and Star Prairie School Boards along with serving as Chairman of the building committee when the United Methodist Church in New Richmond was built. Other boards Richard served on included, American Dairyman Board, State Vocational Board and the New Richmond Community Foundation. He was a 4-H Leader, FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer, a member of the WI Master Farmers and he won the Distinguished Holstein Breeder award. Recently, the family farm was awarded as a Century Farm in August 2010. Richard is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ida; sister, Dorothy Kruschke, infant brother; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Helen Kruschke; nephews, James Freeberg and Gary Freeberg. He is survived by his children, David Kruschke, Charles (Mary) Kruschke and Susan Gillis; grandchildren, Carrie (Joshua) Strege, Peter Kruschke, Joseph Kruschke, Jacob Kruschke, Daniel Gillis, J.C. (DeAnna) Gillis; great-grandchildren, Lillie, Mitchell, Tanner and Dalton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul (Dorothy) Freeberg; nephews, Alden (Shirley) Kruschke, Byron (Cheryl) Kruschke; nieces, Jane (Dean) Scholz, Linda (Jim) Halverson; and many more relatives and friends.
From your President Corey Geiger Dear Wisconsin Holstein Association members: Our April 19 WHA board meeting was held one day before the press deadline for the May Wisconsin Holstein News. Our meeting began with a WHA portfolio review from Marsha Stewart with Merrill Lynch. Over the past eight years, the WHA Director of Operations and the WHA Board, along with help from Marsha, have developed mission statements for our seven accounts held with Merrill Lynch. These mission statements give better focus to our investment goals. Overall, our investments continue to perform strongly despite our somewhat conservative investment strategy. The combined Wisconsin Holstein Association account balance stands at $432,000 at the end of March. And during the past 14 years that our money has been invested with Merrill Lynch, we have had a 95.62 percent return on investment. That means we have nearly doubled our money. On an annual basis, we have earned a 5.2 percent return on our portfolio. As a comparison, if we had invested in the S&P (all stocks), returns would have been 3.24 percent, and a suggested Model Portfolio for nonprofits would have returned 4.71 percent. Both those returns are lower than the actual WHA Portfolio performance. Meanwhile, investing in an Aggregate Bond Index performance would have been slightly higher at 5.62 percent. Bottom line, our Association has very stable investments despite a tight fiscal budget for this year. Shows always seem to garner a great deal of attention at board meetings. This meeting was no exception. The WHA Board approved a clarification to the junior membership agreement by developing a rule that states animals owned by the junior, either solely or in partnership, are ineligible for all WHA-sponsored shows if a junior is in violation of the WHA Junior Member Agreement. This rule goes into effect immediately. On another widely debated matter since last year’s Wisconsin State Holstein Show, the WHA Board decided to keep the Spring Heifer Calf Class, Exhibitor 10 & under as is for 2011. Please note, those rules include the fact that calves must be under sole control of the
person on the halter. That means no help from anyone else! As you know, this unique Spring Heifer Calf Class allows youth that are 10 and under as of January 1 to show at our State Show in a separate division. First- and second-place open and first- and second-place junior animals in this class may compete in Class 2 which is the open division of the Spring Heifer Calf Class. We hope all our members follow the original spirit of this class when it started over a decade ago. If that occurs, there will be no need to revise rules. However, if concerns continue to surround the class, it may be brought up for discussion at next year’s annual meeting. The very active Young Adult Committee is planning a golf outing prior to the WHA picnic hosted by Matt and Mandy Nunes’ Scientific Holsteins in Chippewa Falls, Wis., on August 27. The event is open to all Holstein enthusiasts regardless of age. It will be a nine-hole scramble contest where the best ball is used from four-member teams. Like the bowling tournament held a few years ago at Adult Convention, this golf outing will randomly assign people to teams so everyone can meet new people. If you would like to participate, call the WHA office. The Association would like to have major events, including Junior and Adult Conventions along with the Wisconsin Championship Show, booked three years in advance. To date, only one of three events has extended commitments. The State Show will be in Fond du Lac this year, followed by Wood and Grant County. Adult convention will be hosted by WaupacaWaushara County next year, and one county is seriously looking at 2013. Meanwhile, we have a county looking at hosting next year’s junior convention, and Rock County will host in 2013. Bottom line, WHA needs convention hosts to step forward for future adult and junior conventions. Lastly, I would like to congratulate all four Wisconsin Distinguished Junior Member (DJM) candidates. All four of our nominees qualified for nationals: Danae Bauer, Scandinavia; Mitchell Kappelman, Two Rivers; Kelly Lee, Johnson Creek; and Carl Lippert, Pittsville. This marks the second straight year all four Wisconsin candidates were among the twelve national semi-finalists. Wisconsin also has two Younger Distinguished Junior Members. The Voight Family: Mitch, Amanda, Steve, granddaughter Cadyn, Sue, Hailey, Chad, Tim, grandson Gabe, Cole, Stephanie and Eric Steve keeps himself busy by feeding the animals on Voight-Acres, while Sue does the farm’s bookwork and spends time Monday through Friday with Cadyn and Gabe. Growing up, Steve was active in the dairy project in 4-H, as well as FFA. Steve, Sue, Mitch and Tim participate in farm tours for 4-H’s “Adventures in Dairyland” program. Being named the Grand Champion at the Outagamie County Fair is considered an honor in the Voight family because of the prestigious herds in the county. Outagamie County has six herds in the top 200 BAA. These herds include Milksource with a BAA of 113.4, Craig Krohlow with a BAA of 112.9, Claude Court with a BAA of 111.2, Russ Letter with a BAA of 110.6, Steven Voight with a BAA of 110.0 and Mark Eggert with a BAA of 109.3. The other Linjet twin, Voight-Acres Daisy Mae EX-92, has a record of 3-03 2x 365 29,350M 4.3 1260F 3.4 990P. She has been flushed to Shottle with four heifers on the ground. Voight-Acres considers Durham and Linjet to be their most influential sires. Their heifer pens currently consist of a majority of Sanchez and Shottle. They are also using Sid, Braxton, Guthrie, Palermo and Atwood. Their flush bulls of choice are Shottle and Goldwyn. The family makes appearances at the Outagamie County Fair and the District 7 Holstein Show. They have also shown at the Wisconsin State Fair, World Dairy Expo, The Wisconsin State Championship Show, and Grand National in Louisville. Holstein Show. In 2002, they had the Junior All-American Senior Three-Year-Old and the Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin Winter Calf in 2003. The calves on Voight-Acres Farm are raised in individual pens until three months in the solar barn built in 2002. They are then moved to group pens until breeding age. The bred heifers and dry cows are moved to bedding-pack housing before going to be milked in the tie-stall barn with a pipeline milking system. The bedding consists of chopped straw and shaving on a mattress. The cows are fed haylage, corn silage, high-moisture corn, dry hay and protein mix. Voight-Acres consigns to many local sales. These sales include the Outagamie County Holstein Breeders Spring Sale, the Waupaca Calf Sale, the Fond du Lac County Sale and the Badger Invitational. At the Outagamie County Holstein Breeders Spring Sale, they will be selling a fall calf, Voight-Acres Atwood Rachel and two fresh two-year-olds, including Voight-Acres Finest Flirt. For the future, Voight-Acres hopes to maintain their herd of 85 cows, as well as their young stock. Their current goal is to expand crop acres for more commodity crop sales.

SALE REPORTS Roma-Acres Complete Dispersal - March 16 A beautiful day and tremendous homebred herd of cattle made for an exciting sale day on March 16, 2011 at the Great Northern Sales Arena as the Roma-Acres herd was dispersed. Ron, Mary, Andy & Jake Paider of Denmark, WI bred a beautiful uddered herd with some very impressive statistics. The current herd average stood at 26,732 3.7% 996 2.9% 786 with an SCC average of 84. The classification BAA was 109.1% and the herd had received the Progressive Breeder Award for 21 years and the Progressive Genetics Award for 19 years. A large crowd was on hand for the sale and was very appreciative of the Paider’s efforts as they bid actively throughout the sale. The 58 cows sold for an average of $2,934 with the entire 106 head averaging $2,284. Heading the price list was lot number 1, Roma-Acres SS Deuce Amber who had just been raised to EX-91 with a 92 pt. mammary only 3 weeks fresh. Backed by a VG-88 36,490 dam, she sold for $6,000 to Matthiae Dairy Farm, Marathon, WI. A key brood cow at Roma-Acres was Any-Day Outside Picatine-ET EX-92 2E with 35,120 7.1 2497 2.9 1034. Picatine is a daughter of the well-known brood cow, Jo-Clar Jess Patsy EX-93 2E DOM. This fifth generation Excellent bred to Palermo sold for $4,600 to Robert, John & Micheal Yenter, Wittenburg, WI. Another high scoring key member of the herd claimed third high selling honors at $4,200. Roma-Acres Jasper Jessie had just been raised to EX-93 3E (93-MS) at 9 years of age. This 32,650 4.9 1591 3.5 1147 Cel Jasper daughter completes nine generations Excellent and Very Good and sold to Jim & Janet Kappers, Spring Valley, MN. Jessie’s four year old Blitz daughter had just been raised to EX-90 and was milking 128 lbs. on the March test. Roma-Acres Blitz Jenna sold for $4,000 to Gerald Folcik, Wilson, MI. Cattle sold to buyers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Michigan. The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. with Darrell Worden handling the auctioneering duties and Rick Bovre giving the pedigree credentials. Fielding bids were Lynn Harbaugh, Kevin Jorgensen, Bob Sabo and Chad Ryan.
Milk Source Main Event - March 25 It was standing room only for the first Milk Source Main Event held March 25, 2011 at the Great Northern Sales Arena. The crowd was very appreciative of the beautiful line up of fancy heifers and select cows from both Milk Source Genetics and other prominent breeders across the country. At day’s end the 109 lots averaged $4,878 with prices remaining steady throughout the sale. Milk Source Genetics sponsored the sale which featured a fantastic group of cattle some with high genomics, some that will be strong competitors in the show ring and others that will be tremendous foundations for their new owners as they have superior type and are backed by the breed’s best cow families. The high price of the day was $26,000 for a package of four recipients carrying female pregnancies by Goldwyn from the EX-953E-CAN Fleury Formaton Lauria. The pregnancies are full sisters to a Milk Source favorite, Brainwave Goldwyn Lauramie, VG-89 and Nominated All-American Junior Three Year Old 2010. As one might expect, Milk Source Genetics purchased the package in hopes of adding more All-American nominees to their herd! This package was consigned by David Dyment, Dundas, Ontario. Milk Source offered a first choice female from the Midwest Spring National Show Intermediate Champion, Lauramie, by either Sid, Windbrook or Braxton due later this year. This choice commanded a final bid of $20,000 from the Lauramie Syndicate, c/o Scott Armbrust, Green Bay, WI. The highly contracted Eroy family provided the next high seller at $13,000. Nova Garrett Edielou-ET sold with a GTPI +2200 to Groupe Can-Genes Group, Mirabel, Quebec. Consigned by Nova Registered Holsteins, Inc., New Richmond, WI, this November, 2010 Garrett hails from the VG-87 DOM, highly contracted Goldwyn Edie who’s dam is the VG-87 GMD DOM Eroy with 40,330M. Consigned by Milk Source LLC she sold for $12,500. A first choice Observer female offered by Gary Housner & Ronald Suhr, Elroy, WI sold for $12,200 to Ronald Hackmann, Manitowoc, WI. Ron gets first choice of four female Observers due in August from the #7 PTAT cow of the breed, Regancrest Gold Bretta-ET VG-88 DOM GTPI +2171 +3.89T. Another tanbark favorite from Milk Source provided the next high seller at $12,400. First choice Destry female from the All-American R&W Senior 3 Year Old 2010, Silvermine Adv Tally-Red-ET EX-92, sold to Wilstar Holsteins, Poy Sippi, WI. Tally’s running mate and the All-American R&W Junior 3 Year Old 2010, Budjon-Nitzy Destiny-Red-ET EX-92 provided two great opportunities. The first choice Destry female from Destiny sold for $11,800 to Squires Farm, Inc., Menomonie, WI, while her stunning summer yearling by Contender, Milksource Cntndr Diva-Red, sold to Megan Kulp, Manheim, PA for $10,200. These consignments came from the heart of the Milk Source breeding program! The Milk Source crew hosted a wine and cheese social the evening prior to the sale which was very well attended. They also provided a complimentary breakfast prior to the sale. Jim Ostrom, John Vosters and their families are very gracious hosts. Jamie Endvick, Milk Source Herd Manager, was instrumental in coordinating sale details and having the Milk Source consignments in show ring ready condition. Sunny-Valley Dispersal - April 2 Good cattle, good people & good weather all combined for a fantastic sale day at Sunny-Valley Holsteins in Belmont, Wisconsin on April 2, 2011. Ron and Jean DeBuhr along with their son, Wayne, and daughters, Marcia & Sheila, are well respected for their efforts in breeding and developing their Sunny-Valley herd. The herd was recognized in 2008 as a Holstein USA Herd of Excellence and has received the Progressive Breeder award 15 years. The Sunny-Valley prefix can be found on 34 Excellents, nine Gold Medal Dams and four Dams of Merit. Currently the rolling herd average stood at 26,854 4.0% 1077 3.1% 835 while the latest classification yielded a BAA of 108.6%. The huge crowd, estimated at 500-600 people, bid actively and enjoyed the commentary from the auction box provided by Chris Hill and Tim Abbott. A total of 102 Sunny-Valley cattle paraded across the sale ring shavings for an average of $3,202 with cattle going to Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Canada. It was the red and white family developed from Reserve All-American Red & White, Sunny-Valley Fever-Red-ET EX-91 that provided the sale’s high sellers. Sunny-Valley A Favor-Red-ET is an impressive, young fall yearling for 2011 that claimed Reserve Junior Champion honors at the District 3 Holstein Show in 2010. By Advent, from Fever, herself, this fancy lady is backed by 6 generations EX & VG and sold for $18,800 to the Favor Syndicate, Cottage Grove, WI. A beautiful uddered granddaughter of Fever claimed the second high price of $10,000. Sunny-Valley RM Finally-Red had just scored VG-87 and is entered in the 2012 World Dairy Expo Futurity. This Redman is backed by the EX-90 Kite daughter of Fever. Finally sold to Andrew Sell, Watertown, WI. Andrew claimed the third high seller as well at $8,500. Sunny-Valley Fiddle-Red-ET is a November Redman fall yearling from the EX-92 HM All-American Red &
White daughter of Fever, Advent Frito. Sunny-Valley is also home of the family that produced AllAmerican and Reserve Grand Champion at the International Holstein Show in 2004, Sunny-Valley Durham Electra EX-95 GMD DOM. This family accounted for nearly 30 head in the herd and provided the fourth high seller at $6,400. Sunny-Valley Atwood Epic is a big fall calf that caught the eye of many. Hello! My name is Breinne Hendrickson, this past January I was crowned your 2011 Wisconsin Holstein Princess. I am the nineteen-year-old daughter of Jeff and Kate Hendrickson from Belleville, where I grew up on a registered Holstein dairy farm. I have four brothers, Brandon, Trent, Trevor and Brooks, and one sister, Kelsi. I am a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Dairy Science and Life Science Communications. While at school I am very active within the Association of Women in Agriculture and the Badger Dairy Club. I have been a member of the Junior Holstein Association since I was four years old, as well as showing since that age. Wisconsin Holstein Breeders host Successful Barn Meetings The Wisconsin Holstein Association held a series of successful barn meetings at four farms during the last part of March and first of April 2011. The topic of discussion at each barn meeting was reproduction and the tools available to producers to help with conception and reproductive efficiency. The first two barn meetings were hosted by Paradise-D Holsteins, the Dan and Nancy Pagenkopf family of Lancaster on Thursday, March 24, and Forest-Ridge Holsteins, Kurt and Sarah Loehr, Eden, on Monday, March 28. A large group of visitors attended each meeting and were treated to a tour of the facilities, a great herd of cows and a delicious lunch. Dr. Chris Booth spoke at both meetings and gave a presentation on improving reproductive efficiency. He started the talk by saying everyone’s situation is different with different goals for their reproductive program and how success is measured, whether by conception rate, pregnancy rate or percent pregnant at vet check. There are several factors that contribute to cow fertility and management for nutrition, disease, milk production is very important along with environment and a cow’s genetics. Dr. Booth shared results from past studies that show about one in four cows are not cycling at 65-75 days in milk. There are several synching programs that have been developed to help get cows cycling. He pointed out that with any program there are three steps to setting up a successful synching program: 1. How and when are cows submitted for first AI and what is the voluntary waiting period. 2. How and when are open cows to the first AI identified and submitted for second AI (heat detection, pregnancy check, etc.). 3. Repeat set two until pregnant or you stop trying. Dr. Booth went through several synching programs and the protocols for each. He stressed that with any program, the timeliness of the shots is key to maximize fertility. Some of the benefits for presynchronizing cows for first service include getting more high producing cows ready for first service, a 10-15% increase in conception rate with presynch versus no set-up (natural heat or just starting Ovsynch protocol), and a 5% increase in conception rate using a 14-11 Presynch vs. 14-14 Presynch protocol. Dr. Booth also pointed out several reasons why Ovsynch doesn’t “work” for some herds, including that people only use Ovsynch on problem cows, starting cows during the wrong stage of their cycle and lack of compliance when giving shots. If producers are having reproductive problems, they are also encouraged to review their AI techniques and to work with their veterinarian, nutritionist and other advisors as a team. Ralph and Sharon Bredl of Harmony-Ho Dairy, Stratford, hosted a meeting on Wednesday, March 30, and attendees were treated to a tour of their facilities as well as a tasting of several variety of cheeses produced by Harmony Speciality Dairy Foods. Steve Dewall, Genex Dairy Specialist, was also on hand to point out some of Harmony-Ho’s Genex Genesis cows. The Ralph and Sheila Petersheim family hosted the final meeting on Friday, April 1, at Welsh-Edge Holsteins near Viroqua. Visitors were able to see a great herd of homebred cows, highlighted by the Ginger family including Durham Gingerheart and her Excellent and Very Good daughters. Dr. Matt Dorshorst was the speaker at both Harmony-Ho Dairy and Welsh-Edge Holsteins. He encouraged breeders to monitor the nutrition of their herd and work with their nutritionists to keep cows on the right track as fifty-percent of dairy cows experience one health crisis during the transition period, which can cause conception rates to be less than 35 percent. He also pointed out that the general management of your herd affects your reproductive success. Dr. Dorshorst shared that studies show 70 percent of heats occur from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., which is why synching protocols have been developed. He also stressed that with any program, all shots and the timing of the shots is critically important for the success of the program. Also, pre-screening and ultrasounding cows will help to identify cows that are good candidates for a synching program. Dr. Dorshorst briefly discussed technologies used for pregnancy diagnosis and stated that ultrasound offers the most advantages regarding determination of fetal viability, twining and fetal sexing. also urged everyone to consult with their veterinarian about reproduction protocols as there are a lot of options and your vet will know best what will work in your situation while considering your goals and limitations. In March of 2011 Door County took our annual spring tour to Shawano County. We visited Synergy Dairy Farm, Go-Make Holsteins, and Horsens Dairy Farm. The tour was enjoyed by all, and we would like to extend our thanks to these breeders for hosting us. We are looking forward to summer activities highlighted by our Door County Twilight meeting. Three $1000 grants were given to county youth to assist them in the purchase of a Registered holstein show calf at the sale. Our annual Holstein picnic was held at Gateway Acres and hosted by Bob and Sherry Gates. A silent auction was held with over $1100 raised for our county junior association and we had WHA President Jim Rickert as a guest speaker. Waushara county will also be hosting the 2011 Alice in Dairyland finals in May.

2011 WHA District Show Information Please read the Rules for 2011 Wisconsin Holstein Shows as there are some new rules to be aware of: General Rules, #2 - Out of state partners must also be paid members of the Wiisconsin Holstein Association in order to show a partnership animal(s) at any Wisconsin Holstein Association show. Along with the $40 membership fee, there is a $50 show fee that must be paid before any animal owned by the out of state member is shown at a District or State Show. RULES FOR 2011 WISCONSIN HOLSTEIN SHOWS
ANIMAL HEALTH RULES AND REGULATIONS/DAIRY CATTLE ALL CATTLE - Health requirements for the Wisconsin District and Championship Shows are the same as the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture’s requirements for intrastate movement of cattle. Please visit the DATCP website for the most recent rules - http://datcp.wi.gov/uploads/Animals/pdf/ 2011FairRules.pdf It is highly recommended that all animals shown at the District and Championship Show be vaccinated for BVD according to your Veterinarian’s recommendations. It is also highly recommended that animals be tested for Persistently Infected (PI) BVD animals. This is a once in a lifetime test to insure that the animal is not a PI or shedder animal carrying the BVD Virus. Cattle infected with ringworm, warts, or mange may not be exhibited unless the veterinarian in charge determines the ringworm lesions or warts are inactive and incapable of transmitting the disease. Any cattle found with ringworm, warts, mange or scab shall be removed from the premises of the show. Show management is responsible for maintaining records of persons who have exhibited at the show and the identification of animals shown for 2 years. Acceptable forms of animal identification for breeding animals are (1) an official metal ear tag, (2) a breed registration number, or (3) a breed registration tattoo. Ribbons and Trophies: Ribbons for the District Shows are available from the Wisconsin Holstein office. Trophies are optional for District Shows and the responsibility of each District Show host. The Championship Show ribbons will be provided by the Wisconsin Holstein Association and the Wisconsin Junior Activities Committee. Junior Ownership: Junior exhibitors shall be in competition with Open Class Cattle. To compete for junior awards the exhibitor shall not have passed his or her 21st birthday before January 1 of the year of the show. Junior leased animals must follow Holstein USA rules to be eligible for junior awards. TO COMPETE FOR JUNIOR RIBBONS AND TROPHIES, ALL JUNIOR EXHIBITORS MUST HAVE THE ANIMAL’S OWNERSHIP REGISTERED OR TRANSFERRED BY THE HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION INTO THE INDIVIDUAL NAME OF THE JUNIOR EXHIBITOR ON OR BEFORE JUNE 1st. NO JUNIOR TRANSFER APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THE SHOWS. a. Partnerships between two juniors are allowed if both members are current WI Holstein Association Junior members. No other partnership qualifies for Junior Recognition. b. Junior exhibitors must be sole leadsperson for their animals in order to receive recognition. If a junior has more than one junior owned animal in one individual class, the junior exhibitor must designate which of the animals will be led by the exhibitor. The animal led by the junior exhibitor will be the animal eligible for Junior Recognition. c. Managerial projects may be exhibited in Open Class competition. However, they are not eligible for Junior awards. d. To be considered for Junior Awards, exhibitors must identify themselves as a qualified junior member on the entry form and upon check-in to show management. e. It is the responsibility of the Junior owner to prove ownership of animal by hard copy (on the registration paper). Bred and Owned: This award is to be given at the Wisconsin Championship Show and is optional at the District Shows. An award will be given in all the female classes for the highest placing animal bred and owned by exhibitor; partnership animals are eligible for Bred & Owned award as long as original breeder(s) and owner(s) maintains part ownership. Breeder is to be determined as the owner of the dam at the time of the service; where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family residing on one farm, and everyone is using the same prefix, all entries may be considered as Bred and Owned by Exhibitor. Junior Bred and Owned: To be eligible for Junior Bred & Owned, the name(s) listed as breeder and owner on the registration certificate must be the same. Adult-Junior partnerships are not acceptable. Family unit or farm partnerships will not qualify for Junior Bred & Owned awards unless all partners are Junior members and listed on the certificate under breeder and owner. Production Awards: This award is optional at the District Show. In all cow classes, except the Jr. & Sr. 2 Year Olds, the cow with the highest 305 day milk production will be recognized. The recognition will be based solely on total pounds of milk production without regard to the milking frequency or the testing program. Records should be entered on the entry form and verified at the time of check-in with an official test sheet or an official pedigree. Best Udder: This award is optional at the District Show. At the State Championship Show a Best Udder ribbon will be awarded in all milking cow classes. The Best Udder cow in each of the milking classes will compete to select the Best Udder Cow of the Show. Dry Cow Classes: THERE WILL BE NO DRY COW CLASSES AT THE WISCONSIN CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW OPTIONAL AT DISTRICT SHOWS. Any cow that was last fresh 280 days or more, prior to the date of the show, may be shown at the option of the exhibitor in either the Dry or Milking Cow Class. A cow milked less than 280 days must show in the Milking Class, unless she is recorded as dry on the DHI sheet. The DHI sheet must ccompany animals to be shown in the Dry Cow Classes. Premier Breeder Award: The breeder winning the most points on four (4) animals, all exhibited in the single classes, shall be designated Premier Breeder. Premier Breeder form is to be filled out at time of check-in to be eligible for this award. No entry fee is required. The winner of this award need not be an exhibitor at the Show, or need not be the current owner of any of the point winning animals. In case of a tie, additional animals will be counted, one at a time, until the tie is broken. Breeder Defined: The owner of the dam at the time of service shall be considered the breeder of the animals. Where a herd is registered in the names of different members of a family, and where the herd is one unit, and everyone is using the same prefix, all entries may be considered as exhibits of one breeder. Otherwise, when animals are bred in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique breeder. When animals are owned in partnership, each unique partnership is considered a unique exhibitor. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor points will be awarded to the top 10 animals in each class. In classes with 10 or less animals, no more than two head per breeder or exhibitor will be counted toward premier points. If the class has more than 10 animals, then a single breeder or exhibitor may obtain points on more than two animals if the animals stand in the top 10 placings of the class.

Owners of all animals exhibited at District and Championship Show must be state association members in good standing. Renewal memberships must be paid before June 1, 2011. If renewal of membership is not paid by June 1, 2011, a $10 late fee will be added. 2. Out of state partners must also be paid members of the Wisconsin Holstein Association in order to show a partnership animal(s) at any Wisconsin Holstein Association show. Along with the $40 membership fee, there is a $50 show fee that must be paid before any animal owned by the out of state member is shown at a District or State Show. 3. All animals exhibited at the District and Championship Show must be accompanied by the registration certificate or faxed copy of the registration paper directly from the Holstein Association USA; no photocopies will be accepted. All animals exhibited must be Holstein Registered or Qualified by the Holstein Association USA, Inc. or registered with the Holstein Association of Canada with 87% or greater purity. 4. Ownership shall be established by the name listed on the registration certificate; or the presentation of the certificate of registration along with a completed transfer & the appropriate fee, which will be retained by the Chairperson of the show & forwarded to the Holstein Association USA, Inc. 5. Animals shown at the Wisconsin Holstein District Shows and the Wisconsin Championship Show are not to be shown at any other state’s District or State Show. Any animal may be shown in the District where it is owned or housed, but not in both. 6. The full entry fee must accompany any entry for District or Championship Show in order for that animal to be considered an entry; otherwise, late entry fee schedule applies. 7. Once cattle are checked into a class, there will be absolutely no switching of classes (such as 125,000 lb. to Aged Cow). Absolutely no additions or switching after the check-in deadline. 8. Substitutions with-in class by the same exhibitor may be made at check-in time; any other new entries will be considered a new or late entry and must pay the appropriate entry fees. 9. The WI Holstein Association Standard Agreement for Owners to Exhibit must be signed to be an eligible entry. Championship Show Eligibility: (Also see General Rule #1) Any exhibitor showing at their District Show is eligible to show at the Wisconsin Championship Show. The exhibitor is allowed to exhibit in the Championship Show up to the actual number shown and placed at District Show. These animals may or may not be the same as shown at the District Show. Partnerships that did not exhibit an animal in that partnership at a District Show but wish to exhibit partnership animals may show at the State Championship show as a substitution animal for one of the animals shown and placed by one of the partners at a District Show. The spirit of these rules is to encourage exhibitors to show the best animals they have at the time of their District Show and at the Championship Show. The Holstein Show Committee and the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors reserve the final and absolute right to interpret the rules and regulations of the Shows and will settle and determine all matter, questions, or differences in regard thereto or otherwise arising out of, or in connection with the Shows. In the event a question arises concerning an animal’s age, the Show Committee Chairperson may request that an individual registration certificate be checked at ringside. DISTRICT SHOWS 1. The Wisconsin Holstein Show Ring Policy is in effect at all Wisconsin District Shows. 2. Starting time for individual District Shows shall be determined by the Districts. 3. Check-in deadline for the District Show is at the option of the District. Check-in deadline will be listed in the section listing location and starting time for each District. Exhibitors should check and be aware of the check-in deadlines at their respective District Show. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to comply with the respective District Show check-in time. 4. The District Show committee will determine all fees pertaining to their show and submit these fees to the Wisconsin Holstein office for publication. 5. Optional classes for District Shows are Unfresh 2 Year Old and Dry Cow classes. 6. Production awards and Bred and Owned awards are optional at the District Show.
CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW Entry Fee Schedule $20 for heifers if made at respective District Show $25 for milking age females if made at respective District Show $50 per head if entry made by mail, fax or email and received in the WHA office before 7/1/2011 $100 per head if entry made at Championship Show or by mail, email or fax & received after 7/1/2010 1. A representative of the Wisconsin Holstein Association will be on hand for not less than one hour after the conclusion of the last class at each District Show. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to make sure the entries are made in this time frame. 2. All cattle for the Championship Show shall be in place by 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 10, 2011 in order for the registration certificates, health papers and production records to be checked. The fairgrounds will not be open for cattle arrival before 7:00 am, Saturday, July 9, 2011. Bedding cattle stalls and leaving equipment on grounds may be done between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2011. Exhibitors in violation of this rule must pay a $1000 fine to the WI Holstein Assoc. prior to the first class entering the ring at the 2011 WI Championship Show. If the fine is unpaid, the violators will be disqualified from the 2011 WI Championship Show. 3. Starting time for the Championship Show shall be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 11, 2011, with the Heifers and Junior Champion selection. The show will resume at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 12, 2011 with the Milking Cows. 4. An exhibitor meeting will be held Sunday, July 10, 2011, at noon in the show arena. 5. Awards: The first and second place animal in each class will receive a plaque and will be designated All-Wisconsin and Reserve All-Wisconsin animals of their respective class. Open Show ribbons will be awarded to

the 3rd-10th place exhibitors in the Heifer and Milking Cow Classes. Ribbons will be awarded to the 3rd-5th place exhibitors in the Group Classes. One rosette ribbon will be given for the Best Udder in each of the Milking Cow Classes. One rosette ribbon will be given to the Best Bred & Owned animal in each of the classes. JUNIOR SHOW ribbons will be awarded to the 3rd–5th exhibitors in the Heifer and Milking Cow Classes. The first and second place Junior exhibitors in each female class will be designated Junior All-Wisconsin and Reserve Junior All-Wisconsin (except Class 1). The top two Open Show and Junior Show animals in Class 1 may choose to compete in Class 2 for All-Wisconsin Awards. It is recommended that all animals in the barn have identification signs for the convenience of visitors and to enhance marketing opportunities. HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION USA, INC. SHOW RING POLICY Showing cattle is an important part of promoting, merchandising and breeding Registered Holsteins for breeders and Holstein Association USA, Inc. It is also in the best interest of Registered Holstein breeders to maintain integrity and present a positive and progressive image of themselves and their cattle in the showring. Holstein Association USA works cooperatively with the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA), show management, exhibitors and judges to give encouragement, direction, and uniformity to the National Holstein Show program. I. ETHICS: At all times, Registered Holsteins shall be treated in a humane manner and in accordance with dairy quality assurance practices so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the livestock and the consuming public. No person shall present for exhibition or exhibit an animal which he or she knows, or has reason to suspect, is affected with or has been exposed to a dangerously contagious or infectious disease, illness, or illegal or nonapproved use of drugs, medication and/or prohibited substance, or residue. The position of Holstein Association USA is that all animals presented for exhibition shall be in their natural conformation and structure, free of any alteration or modification caused by unethical fitting. In keeping with the basic philosophy of Holstein Association USA, ethics are an individual responsibility of the owner of each animal shown. Violations of these policies are subject to the disciplinary provisions of the Association Bylaws. WISCONSIN HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION SHOW RING POLICY The following practices or procedures are unacceptable in the showing of registered dairy cattle: 1. criticizing or interfering with the judge, show management or other exhibitors, or other conduct detrimental to the breed or show, any unsportsmanship like conduct during the event. 2. misrepresenting the age or ownership of an animal or the number of calvings and/or stage of lactation; 3. filling an animal’s rumen unnaturally with liquid (tubing); 4. balancing the udder by any means other than by leaving naturally produced milk in any or all quarters; 5. treating the udder internally with an irritant, counter-irritant, or any other substance to temporarily improve conformation; 6. overfilling or over-bagging of udders; 7. treating the udder externally with an irritant, counterirritant, or any other substance to temporarily improve conformation (allowable practices/substances include sealing and setting teats, but not shrinking/ shortening of teats); 8. treating the animal, particularly the udder, internally or externally, with a an irritant or counter-irritant, or other substance to artificially improve the conformation (this is to include any external pressure applied to the udder crease to artificially enhance it, i.e. roping) icing of the udder will be allowed ONLY when the ice is placed in a plastic bag (such as a zip-lock bag), ice MAY NOT be placed in any other foreign objects; 9. administering epidural anesthesia (blocking tails) and/or applying any irritant either externally or internally to the perineal (rectum and vagina) area; 10. inserting foreign material/articles under the skin, into the topline or on the feet (Administration of acceptable medications is permitted.); 11. performing surgery of any kind to change the natural contour of appearance of the animal’s body, hide or hair. Not included is the removal of warts, teats and horns, clipping and dressing of hair and trimming of hooves; 12. draining fluid from hocks unless authorized by a veterinarian at the show; 13. Excessive manipulation of hair and/or the use of any hair not naturally attached to the animal or the use of any substance or material which is intended to resemble or imitate hair; 14. mistreatment of animals; 15. any unsportsman-like conduct during the event. MONITORING PROCEDURES 1. The Ethics Committee, as defined below, shall have the authority to inspect all animals to determine if violations of Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy have occurred. To help in this regard, the Ethics Committee has the authority to perform and review results of the following: a. An ultrasound examination of the udder of selected animals immediately upon completion of each respective milking class competition. It shall be the exhibitor’s responsibility to deliver selected cow to the designated testing area. Following said testing, the ultrasound official shall submit a report to the show chairman if any violations have occurred. If an animal fails to show up for ultrasounding with a full udder at the Midwest National Spring Show &/or the WI Championship Show, show placings will be revoked and reported to Holstein USA and Holstein World. b. a milk out of any individual cow and/or c. the collection and testing of any of the animal’s body fluids and/or d. the use of any other technology that may be useful in determining if a violation in any animal based on placement, random selection, or suspect characteristics. e. the Ethics Committee or Show Chairman may, at any time, require the delivery to them of any hair samples or hypodermic syringe, needle, or other device, swabs, cloths, or other material, or samples or any medicine, preparation, or substance, whether in liquid or other form, in the possession or control of exhibitor, fitters, agents or person acting on behalf of the exhibitor for laboratory analysis. ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES 1. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors shall appoint an Ethics Committee to monitor violations at all state sponsored shows. The Ethics Committee shall consist of two WHA Board members and one non-board member; this committee will be anonymous. 2. Complaints of alleged violations must be to the Show Chairman of respective show immediately. 3. If it is suspected that a violation will occur if an animal is shown the exhibitor will be informed by the Show Chairman that the showing of that animal may result in a violation of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy. If the exhibitor decides not to show that animal, no violation will have occurred. 4. All complaints of alleged violations (as is designated in Enforcement Procedure point #2) received by the Show Chairman must be to the Wisconsin Holstein Association for review by the Ethics Committee within five (5) days of receiving notice of alleged violations, with the Ethics Committee to make a decision on the violations within ten

(10) days of receiving such notice. 5. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Director of Operations will notify the accused exhibitor immediately of the Ethics Committee decision that a violation has occurred and all the supportive evidence will be shared with the exhibitor. Within thirty (30) days Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Committee shall review the findings from the Ethics Committee and make a recommendation to the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors of the disciplinary action. The exhibitor will be able to participate in the Show Committee meeting. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors shall meet on the same day to review the findings from the Ethics Committee, recommendations from the Show Committee and hear any presentation the exhibitor wishes to present. 6. The accused exhibitor must notify Wisconsin Holstein Association within seven (7) days of receiving the violation notice of their intent to participate in the Show Committee meeting and/or the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors meeting, which is set for reviewing the evidence of the alleged violation(s) and the disciplinary action to be taken. 7. If the alleged violator is found in violation of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy, the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors, at its discretion may pass onto the violator(s) its costs associated with the violations, enforcement and review of violation(s). Cost associated with the review and/or appeals process must be paid in full; if this assessment is not paid in full the violator(s) will not be in “good standing” with the Wisconsin Holstein Association and will therefore be denied any and all membership benefits of the association (voting, showing, etc.). 8. Wisconsin Holstein Association Board of Directors and/or the Show Committee may consider previous violations by an exhibitor in their decision of disciplinary action. (see * under Violations Penalties) 9. An animal found in violation of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Show Ring Policy will receive no premium monies or awards or placing(s). 10. Under the Rules of the Show, the exhibitor agrees to accept as final and abide by the decision of the WI Holstein Board of Directors. If the appeal of the exhibitor results in a modification of the position of the WI Holstein Board of Directors, the exhibitor will be notified of the change in writing at such time. 11. During this entire process the Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Board, the Ethics Committee, the Show Committee, its staff and members will not be obligated to maintain confidentiality. Violations Penalties (Penalties for violations at the Wisconsin Holstein Association sponsored shows.) 1. 1st Offense – a minimum of one year probation to a maximum of one year suspension for the animal(s), owner(s), and/or fitter(s) or their representatives either individually and/or a combination thereof from all Wisconsin Holstein Association state sponsored shows. 2. 2nd Offense – minimum one year suspension to a maximum of three years suspension for the animal(s), owner(s), and/or fitter(s) or their representatives either individually and/or combination there of from all Wisconsin Holstein Association state sponsored shows. 3. 3rd Offense – minimum of five years suspension to a maximum of barred for life for the animal(s), owner(s), and/or fitter(s) or their representatives either individually and/or combination there of from all Wisconsin Holstein Association state sponsored shows. *Violations prior to 1/1/2004 shall not apply; any violations after 1/1/2004 shall be cumulative.

1. Spring Heifer Calf, Exhibitor 10 & Under - born after February 28, 2011. This class is limited to juniors 10 years of age and younger as of January 1 of the year of the show. Calves in Class 1 must be under control of the 10 & Under Exhibitor (the exhibitor must be the sole person on the halter). 1st and 2nd open animals and 1st and 2nd Junior animals in this class may compete in Class 2 for All-Wisconsin & Junior All-Wisconsin honors. 2. For the purposes of the observance of the rules of membership herein, there is established a Board which shall consist of the Director of Operations of the Wisconsin Holstein Association, the President of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and the Chairman of the Wisconsin Holstein Association Junior Activities Committee. The purpose of this Board shall be to oversee the fair application of the rules of membership and afford the right of due process to all members. Due process shall be afforded by: explaining the evidence against the member, giving the member an opportunity to explain his/her version of the facts, thereafter, it is a matter of discretion by the Board whether to have the accuser/observer summoned and whether to permit cross examination of said individuals, due process must be initiated within 120 days of receipt of membership revocation.

The following rules shall apply to all members: 1. Use or possession of any alcoholic beverage or controlled substances strictly prohibited. 2. No member shall engage in any behavior prohibited by state statute, local ordinance or Board Policy (which shall include, but is not limited to vandalism, theft, truancy, assault, threats to personal safety or property and flagrant misconduct). 3. Members, at all times, shall demonstrate good citizenship and recognize the value of setting and adhering to the highest standards of conduct and performance. 4. At all Association sponsored functions, activities and trips, the rules of conduct specified by adult chaperones and advisors shall be at all times observed by members. 5. All members shall recognize the right of the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Junior Activities Committee, the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and its staff, adult advisors and chaperones to have the authority to enforce the rules as established and authorized herein.
The Junior Holstein Association is open to membership for those persons under the age of 21 as of January 1st of the membership year. The purpose of this organization is to encourage youthful interest in the promotion of the Registered Holstein industry. To be eligible for membership, all juniors must sign this agreement and agree to abide by the rules hereinafter set forth. Failure to honor any of these rules will subject the junior member to immediate revocation of membership status, including the opportunity of participation in WI Holstein Association sponsored activities and events.

2011 Junior Trip Report Kinyon Holsteins, Marty & Trudy Kinyon Our first stop was Kinyon Holsteins, owned and operated by Marty & Trudy who recently went into partnership with their daughter Jill and son-in-law Lisi. Jill & Lisi have two kids who make up the 4th generation on the farm. Marty’s father bought the farm in 1947. Kinyon Holsteins breed mostly for type and don’t focus on genomics. Their extraordinary herd has a BAA of 109.7, with a 25,000 lb. herd average for a little more than 100 cows. We saw a Goldwyn daughter of Budjon-JK Fallen Embers that is VG-85, a three year old Roy who won their district show in 2010 and a few spring consignments which included an 88 pt. Toystory daughter who will be selling in the Milksource sale. She is a herd favorite of the Kinyons. We would like to again thank everyone at Kinyon Holsteins for taking time to show us their operation.
Finally we saw the cows. We saw the amazing Glystal cow and her daughter who also looked good. After the tour the family treated us to ice cream sundaes and gave us some gifts from the farm. The tour was a fun experience and showed us this amazing farm & family. We thank the Pagenkopf family for allowing us to visit.
Stone-Front Farm, Andy & Lyn Buttles Stone-Front Farm is the breeder of Stone-Front Iron Pasta. Pasta traces back to one of Andy’s first show calves. Pasta’s dam is 14 years old and still kickin’. She is a 92-2E cow. Pasta currently still has plenty of offspring running around including twin Talents and three Jaspers due to calve within the next seven weeks. Stone-Front Farm originated in Racine County but is currently located in Lancaster. Over the last five years they went from having a herd of 60 to 500 milking. They have a double-10 herringbone parlor, milking two times a day. They run 1,000 acres of land. Stone-Front was by far a very moving experience for us young dairymen of Wisconsin.
Nordic-Ridge, Kurtis & Deon Amundson We visited Nordic-Ridge Holsteins, home of the Amundson family - Kurt, Deon, Mitch & Mason. They currently milk 105 cows on 2 times a day milking. They moved to Wisconsin from northeast Iowa. Every building on the farm but one has been redone. They raise their calves in a greenhouse and have not lost a calf in four years. They currently milk in a swing 8 parlor, averaging around 80 pounds/day and had an average SCC in 2010 of 71,000. They have 187 acres tillable and feed a TMR. They breed for longevity, udders, feet and legs. We thank them for allowing us to visit their farm.
Moorclose Holsteins, Bill & Kelle Calvert To start Sunday, we went to Moorclose Holsteins, owned by Bill and Kelle Calvert. They are located outside of Cuba City. They milk about 75 cows three times a day. Their cows average 101 pounds of milk in the tank every day. They have a BAA of 108.4 with a RHA of 28,000. They sell about 30-40 cows a year. They have a greenhouse where they have 20 individual pens and two small group pens. Their calves then go to a shed that was an old free-stall barn. They bed with sawdust. They scrape every other day. They also have a dry cow barn. We want to thank the Calverts for hosting a tour.
Paradise-D Holsteins, Dan & Nancy Pagenkopf Paradise-D Holsteins is the home of Dan and Nancy Pagenkopf and their children, Craig, Andrea & Scott. Craig started our tour of the family farm by showing us their bulls and explaining how they sell the seventy bulls they raise each year. Next the family showed us their heifer shed and explained the rotation for a calf and their feed plans. After the heifer shed we were able to look in the new calf barn and they showed us their protection for bio-security for their calves.
Kamps-Hollow, Richard Kamps Family After our stop at Moorclose we made our way to Belmont, home of the Kamps-Hollow Genetics and Altitude. Kamps-Hollow is owned and operated by Richard & Carol Kamps along with their son Ryan. Eighty-two cows, most of which trace back to Altitude, call this home and eat feed grown on 800 acres owned and farmed by the Kamps. The cows are milked in a traditional tie-stall barn with a unique addition built in 2002. This was done to make it easier to conduct tours, and show off bigger cows. It has 20 stalls and three boxstalls. The stalls are raised 10 inches off the ally, designed to get a 32–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/May 2011
skid loader through for scraping. Cows are housed in loose pack barns when outside. Our time at KampsHollow concluded with an opportunity to see the dam of Advent and Apple, Altitude. She and her Prelude dam are housed in a newly built pack barn with 40 descendants. At 11 years old, Altitude looks excellent as does her 18 year old Prelude dam, Alicia. Kamps-Hollow was a unique experience that all of us were grateful to see.
Hardwood Holsteins, Chuck Jinkins Hardwood Farms in Livingston is owned & operated by Chuck Jinkins. The farm was started 40 years ago by Chuck’s dad as a hobby. It grew into a family operation. The farm started with 40 cows and grew to 50. In 2004 he added on to the barn and it grew to 80 Registered Holsteins. He bought a Bootmaker calf in 1972 and 70% of his herd can be traced back to that calf. He feeds no TMR and buys all of his hay and some corn. He milks with a hired hand two times a day with eight machines. We really enjoyed visiting his farm and getting the opportunity to see all of his Excellent cows.
Gildale Holsteins, Mark & Erik Gilbertson Gildale Holsteins is located in Hollandale, where they milk 42 cows in a stall barn. This farm is 4th generation, owned & operated by Mark, his son Erik and daughter-in-law Brenda. They feed no TMR, just hay and corn silage and a haylage mixture. They sold out in 1996 but started up again in 1997 when they bought some of a herd from Canada. They are breeding for type and also have had a couple of AllAmericans. Mark & Erik are volunteer firefighters. They also have another farm where some of their heifers are housed. They milk two times a day. Their cows are on city water. This was a very good learning experience.
Kellercrest Holsteins, Tim, Sandy & Mark Keller Kellercrest Holsteins is owned and operated by Tim, Sandy and Mark Keller, and Tim & Sandy’s children are Andy and Kimberly. Their farm is located in Mt. Horeb. They milk 282 cows in a double-12 parallel parlor, two times a day. Their herd is 100% Registered and 98% homebred. They run 150 acres of corn and alfalfa. They have a BAA of 106.2 which is 5th or 6th in the country. Currently there are 40 Toystory two year olds milking that scored well and milk really well. In their herd they have about 100 descendants that go back to their cornerstone cow, Kellercrest Winken Lusty. We were really impressed with their herd and greatly appreciate getting the opportunity to see their awesome herd of cows.

Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? Madison has a great reputation for producing future leaders in the dairy industry, like the Holstein Association members I looked up to when I was younger. I also knew that by coming to Madison I would be exposed to a variety of opportunities to succeed and given the chance to learn from experts in their field. What has been your most memorable college experience? Being a member of the Badger Dairy Club – it has given me the opportunity to work closely with World Dairy Expo, gain leadership experience and responsibility with officer positions, and learn more about the dairy industry through club trips and farm touring. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Science 375 – Reproduction with Milo Wiltbank and Jerry Guenther because it is a very practical and hands-on class and both Milo and Jerry really care about the success of their students. They are willing to go the extra mile to help them reach their full potential. What are your future career goals? After graduation I will be working with Ag Consulting Team, Inc. doing on-farm dairy nutrition in northeast Wisconsin.

Junior Holstein Calf Raffle Thank you Sandy Valley Farms!! The Bauer family has generously offered to donate a 2011 Registered Holstein heifer calf to the WI Holstein Juniors to benefit all participating counties in selling the WHA Junior raffle tickets. The tickets will be mailed in late May or early June to the county junior advisors. If the WHA office does not have a junior advisor listed for your county we will be sending tickets directly to each individual junior in that county. We thank Sandy Valley Farms for their support!

WHA Youth Showmanship Contest This year all the WHA District Shows will be holding a Youth Showmanship contest. The contests will have Junior and Senior age divisions with the 10 & Under age division being optional at each District Show. Ages are as of January 1st of the year of competition. Junior is 11 to 15 and Senior is 16 to 20. Youth may sign up for the showmanship contest at check-in time and up until ½ hour before the actual showmanship contest time at your District Show. All Youth must be WHA Junior members in order to participate in the contest. Each District may send their top 3 individuals from the Junior and Senior age divisions onto the WHA State Championship Show Contest. At this time, the 10 & Under will not be held at the WHA State Championship Show.

ANIMART & WHA Clinic ANIMART, Inc. and the WI Holstein JACs will be conducting a clinic on fitting and showmanship on Tuesday evening, May 24, 2011, at the Dodge County Fairgrounds from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This event is authorized for youth to earn points toward their educational component for eligibility to show or sell their animals at county fairs. It is open to all juniors interested in the fine art of fitting and the skill of showmanship. A professional fitter will provide a demonstration and Laurie Winkelman will be teaching showmanship skills. A hands-on workshop for all attendees will follow giving participants a chance to fit and lead live animals. Please be sure to bring your fitting supplies! This year’s door prizes include Oster MiniMax Trimmers and Andis AGC Super 2-Speed Clippers.

Thank you to the four super families that hosted WHA Barn Meetings this spring. Each meeting had a large crowd in attendance and visitors were treated to great hospitality and some great herds of cows. The Breed Improvement committee will be thinking about next year’s meetings in the near future, if you are interested in hosting or have a topic suggestion, please contact the WHA office. Another committee that is working hard on some special events is the Young Adult Committee. The 4th Annual Milwaukee Brewer Outing is coming up quickly on Sunday, May 15. At this time, there are still tickets available so if you are interested in joining the group please give me a call at 608-723-4933. Cost is $25 per person and this includes your ticket, meat for the cookout and a bus ride to the game. A new project we are excited to be putting together is a 4-person best ball golf tournament for the morning of the WHA State Picnic, Saturday, August 27. Cost will be $40 per person and all ages & skill levels are invited to join us! More information will come in the next issue, but if you’d like to get signed up early, give us a call at 608723-4933 or 1-800-223-4269. Next month’s issue will be our annual Red & White issue and will also be distributed at the National Convention in Virginia... a great opportunity to expand your advertising coverage at no extra cost!
