They farm 1700 acres - 700 corn, 300 alfalfa, 225 soybeans, 65 oats, 225 pasture and also run a 30-head cow/calf beef herd. They also finish out all dairy steers that haven’t gone to AI. To date, Honeycrest has sent 104 bulls to AI. Of the bulls that have received proofs, one out of six graduate to active AI. Two have been on the top 15 International TPI list and three more have made the Top 100 TPI list. Honeycrest has bred 45 EX cows and 23 Gold Medal Dams as well as developing two more GMDs. They also have had 21 homebred Dams of Merit and have at least 13 homebred cows over 40,000M. Bob was on the Wisconsin Board of Directors for six years and has been the Pierce County 4-H Dairy Judging coach for 28 years. Wisconsin Holstein Briefs J Jane Elizabeth Ruzic was born July 19, 2013 to Eliza and Philip Ruzic of Greenwood. Jane was 8 lbs. 14.5 oz and 20.5 inches long. She joins big brother Lucas. Congrats! Obituaries John Selz
John Patrick Selz, age 78, joined God’s Heavenly Kingdom on Friday October 4, 2013 at the House of the Dove Hospice in Marshfield. John was born on February 8, 1935 to Herman Selz and Justina (Bergmann) Selz of rural Humbird. He was tenth of twelve children. After graduating from Fairchild High School, John attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. He worked briefly for the DuPont Chemical Company in Clinton, Iowa before returning home in 1959 to manage the family farm. Originally settled by descendants of the Bergmann family, the Selz Farm has been in John’s family for over 125 years. John wed his beloved wife, Marianne Kizewski on February 2, 1957 in Wisconsin Rapids. She was at John’s side when he died just as she has been for 56 years. Together they raised three devoted children: Pamela (Scott) Selz-Pralle of Humbird, Michael Selz of Tempe, AZ and Sue Strauss of Atlanta, GA. John also took great pride in his grandchildren: Ryan, Jessica and Nicole Pralle. Throughout his life, John contributed generously to his community and especially the dairy industry. A strong advocate for progressive dairying and the Holstein industry, John served as President of both the National Holstein Association and Wisconsin Holstein Association. He also served on the World Dairy Expo Board of Directors, Purebred Dairy Cattle Association Board, The Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding, the U.S. Animal Health Association Board and the University of Wisconsin Board of Visitors. His incredible insight and leadership earned him many prestigious honors including the WI Holstein Distinguished Breeder Award, World Dairy Expo Dairyman of the Year, WI Agriculturalist Award the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences Award of Distinction, and the UW-River Falls Top Agriculturalist Award. Though, his proudest accomplishment was breeding and developing a high type and high production herd of Joliam Holsteins. John loved talking cows and crop farming even during his waning days of life on earth. John was also devoted to his community and proud of the rich history of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church-Fairview of which he had served on the Parish Council. He was an active 4-H leader and also served on the Osseo-Fairchild School Board, Mid-Wisconsin Bank Board, Advisory Council to then Rep. Steve Gunderson, CVTC, and many other civic organizations. John will be remembered for his insightful intelligence, progressive foresight, dry sense of humor, and his commitment to family, community, agriculture, and the Holstein industry. He has left an indelible footprint on the hearts and minds of many especially his children and grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Agnes (Gordon) Zimmerman, Philomene (Maurice) Harmon, Eileen (Edward) Payne, Sr. Clarita Selz - OSB, and Margaret Guarascio; and brothers Herman (Lillian) Selz, Werner (Betty) Selz and William (Adelia) Selz. He is survived by siblings Germaine (Leonard) Vertnik, Joseph (Janet) Selz, and Edward 8–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/November 2013
(Frances) Selz. At the family’s request, donations are preferred to establish a memorial scholarship in honor of John with the WI Junior Holstein Association. John was the first chairman of the Wisconsin Holstein Junior Activities Committee and a long-time advocate of developing Wisconsin’s Holstein youth.
Virgil Esselman
Virgil A. Esselman, 47, Loyal, passed away at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Marshfield, on Monday, October 14, 2013. Virgil Alan Esselman was born on February 2, 1966, in Marshfield, WI, the son of Lawrence and Julia (Gessert) Esselman. He was raised on the family farm southwest of Loyal, and received his education in the Loyal School District, graduating from Loyal High School in 1984. Virgil graduated from Indianhead Technical College in Rice Lake, with a degree in Finance. He then went to work at USA Financial Service in River Falls. He returned back to Loyal and worked with his father on the home farm. Virgil also worked at Keith Stump Auction Service in Loyal for 17 years, and delivered flowers for Friends, Flowers & Gifts in Greenwood. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Loyal FFA Alumni, the Clark County Holstein Breeders Association, was a 4-H Dairy Leader, a former member of the Loyal Jaycee's, and helped for many years with the dairy show at the Clark County Fair. Virgil loved his cows and show cattle. Maplehusrt-Lane Mara was his once in a lifetime champion heifer and cow. He especially enjoyed spreading his love of showing dairy cattle to the youth of Clark County, and recently started showing with his nieces, Katlyn and Anna. He had special talent for interior decorating and floral design. He also loved being with family and friends during deer hunting on the home farm. He will be dearly missed by his parents, Lawrence and Julia Esselman of Loyal; two sisters, Nancy (John) Lindgren of Medford; Wendy (Chris) Lindner of Loyal; one brother, Ronald (Terri) Esselman of Greenwood; nine nieces and nephews, Melinda, Phyllis, Jessica and Ben Lindgren; Rachel and Elizabeth Esselman; Katlyn, Anna and Jake Lindner; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. From your President Marci Walker Greetings fellow Wisconsin Holstein enthusiasts! They tell me that the older you get, the faster time goes by, and well I must be getting older because it was warm here what seems like yesterday and today I felt some sleet! Hopefully your harvest was more bountiful than anticipated. I’d like to extend a very heart felt congratulations to all our Wisconsin Holstein members that helped Wisconsin shine at World Dairy Expo, whether it be breeding the cattle, volunteering with the show, preparing the cattle or serving up the grilled cheese. Last month I shared that we were discussing and looking at location options for our Wisconsin State Championship Show due to the lack of hosts signed up beyond 2014. The State Show Sub-Committee and State Show Committee along with Larry have had several meetings, surveyed membership with 80% of responses in favor of moving, and recommended to the Wisconsin Holstein Board to move the show to the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI. Our contract for the Midwest National Spring Show at Jefferson, WI is up for review after the 2014 Show. The Spring Show Committee also had a meeting and recommended to the board that the Midwest National Spring Show move to the Alliant Energy Center. The board met mid-October, accepted the recommendations from the two committees, discussed various factors of deliberation and ultimately voted to have both our Wisconsin State Championship Show and the Midwest National Spring Show at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison for the years of 2015, 2016 and 2017. The WHA Staff and board are very busy working on a number of year-end projects including employee reviews, 2014 planning and budgeting, award application evaluations and preparing for our conventions. Before we know it, the holidays will be here! Changing up the “Oh My Cow Pie” portion just a bit this month and would like you to nominate to me via email a name of the Wisconsin Holstein Member you think just might look the most like Santa. They have heifers out of Bradnick, Destry, Shottle, Goldsun, Atwood, Sanchez and Goldchip. Lee began the farm’s flushing program about eight years ago and they now have 28 ET calves.Their hard work has not gone unnoticed. In 2012 the farm received the Progressive Breeder Award from Holstein USA. Though farming is their passion, both Lee and Scott enjoy a life away from the farm. Both are very involved in sports, with Lee playing volleyball, softball, and bowling, and Scott playing golf, kickball, volleyball, bean bag tournaments, and bowling. Lee and Scott both attended Tomah High School where they were involved in 4-H and FFA. Lee served as FFA president, treasurer, and sentinel and both boys received their State and American Degrees. Lee and Scott were both members of Monroe County Junior Holsteins and an All Breeds Dairy Club. The boys are both active in the Wisconsin Holstein Association, and the farm will be a tour stop for the upcoming WHA Adult Convention. After high school, Lee attended Madison Farm and Industry Short Course before returning home to the farm. Lee and wife Ashley welcomed a daughter, Kylie, in December last year. Scott attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for two years before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he graduated in December 2012 with a degree in Agriculture Business. Pierce-Vale Farm sits on 360 acres of land, with 200 tillable. They own 80 acres in conjunction with their uncle and rent 20 additional acres. They grow most of their own feed with 70 acres of alfalfa, 100 acres of corn, and 30 acres of oats. They feed baylage everyday along with high moisture shell corn, corn silage and hay silage. Cows are milked in the tie-stall barn, which is kept full at all times. The farm’s current RHA for 315 days is 24,915 pounds of milk, 3.89% fat with 968 pounds, and 3.05% protein with 759 pounds. They have an average of 112 bulk tank cell count all year. Lee and Scott don’t like switching cows, so they keep a consistent 55 cows in the herd. When they are over capacity, they sell an average of 12 cows a year to larger herds in the area. Cows that score lower than 82 as a two year old are likely to be sold. They also do some consignment sales and keep about a dozen bulls a year to sell as herd bulls. Calves are raised in 12 individual pens before being moved into the progression shed. Calves are fed milk up to 3-4 months and then switch to hay, calf feed, and corn. After the progression shed, calves are moved to group pens in the barn with the oldest able to go out to the bunk and pasture to keep them thin and fit. They also have a heifer and dry cow shed with 20 freestalls and a bedded sand pen for calving for older cows. The dry cow program is very important to Lee and Scott and they boast very few vet calls. The farm has currently bred 39 Excellent cows, and Lee’s goal is to make that number 50. He wants to continue breeding great cattle with good udders and feet and legs. With the current herd at 55, Lee and Scott have no plans of expanding. They enjoy doing the day-today work and don’t want to manage people. Keeping a small, family run operation where Lee and Scott can get their hands dirty and continue breeding Excellent cows is the future of Pierce-Vale Farm.

World Dairy Expo 2016 Futurity Entries Due
MADISON, WIS. – The deadline is quickly approaching for dairy cattle exhibitors to enter their eligible animals for the 2016 World Dairy Expo International Futurity. Entries for the Futurity will close November 1, 2013 at midnight (CST). The Three-Year-Old Futurity competition is in place for Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, Milking Shorthorn and Red & White cattle. Each breed judge will select a Futurity breed winner, and then an overall winner and reserve will be crowned. Three-Year-Olds from each breed will be awarded premiums based on entries received. The overall Futurity Champion will receive a $1,000 cash award. Animals eligible for the 2016 WDE Futurity must be born between
September 1, 2012-August 31, 2013. The one-time Futurity fee is $50. In addition, the World Dairy Expo stalling and entry fees must be paid the year of the event. The breed continues to need outcross sires in the red breed, and Neil hopes to meet these needs by continuing to focus on type, composites and production. Polled is not a focus for the Josey partnership at this time, until there is more advancement and security with the genetics. Silk continues to impress visitors from around the globe and should only get better as she progresses in her second lactation. She just missed the classifier in October, but should see a great reward in December. Silk is milking over 100 pounds only two weeks fresh after a 22-month calving interval. She was kept on an outstanding program to keep weight off in her dry period. Silk was definitely the highlight of World Dairy Expo at the McDonah’s Speek-NJ farm, as over 70 visitors from Japan, Australia, Netherlands, Italy, and Germany traveled to the farm to see her in person.
While Silk will be on a continued flush program, the Josey partners are excited about additional daughters in the herd. An Earnhardt-P polled daughter at +2267 GTPI has been contracted for embryos by the Japanese, an upcoming Fernand daughter at +2308 GTPI is *RC and +806 NM$ and will be worked with soon. In addition, an *RC Shan daughter is +2367 GTPI and will sell at the Sale of Stars in Canada in November. Neil is still waiting for a few results on polled Relief-P daughters. Silk continues to be housed at Speek-NJ Holsteins, and the Steve, Patty, Emily, Elaine, Katie, Neil and Joan McDonah family. The Speek-NJ herd is home to 110 milking animals, consisting of Registered Holsteins and recipients. The RHA for the registered herd includes 56 cows on test with 28,451M 3.7% 1050F and 3.1% 876P. There are 12 Excellent, 26 Very Good and 17 Good Plus in the herd.

Wisconsin’s World Dairy Expo Champions Apple Dominates International Red & White Holstein Show!
History was made at this year’s International Red & White Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo when the three cows that stood in the championship ring were the result of one outstanding individual KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET, EX-95 DOM. KHW Regiment Apple 3-RedETN, Apple herself and MS Candy Apple-Red-ET lined the colored shavings, side by side, in one shining moment at this year’s World Dairy Expo. The sight was incredible as spectators looked on to appreciate three very similar, outstanding individuals from one incredible family. At the end of the day, these cows were the “Bing, Bang, Boom” in judge Heath’s selection for champion. Apple 3 took home the top honors, while Apple was named reserve, and her daughter honorable mention. Apple’s clone 3 is owned by Westcoast Holsteins, and won the junior two-year-old class before taking Intermediate Champion honors. Three additional clones showed at the 2013 International Red and White Show, and placing fifth in the futurity, a fall calf placed ninth and the second place winter calf, Apple 2, was also owned by Apple partners. Apple has left an impact on the Red and White Holstein breed that will set the standard for years to come, and her history in the show ring is second-to-none. Owned by Apple Partners and Wisconsin bred by KHW Genetics (Ryan Kamps, Ryan Weigel and Mark Haag), Apple’s show career started as a Junior 2-Year-Old when she was named Unanimous All-American in 2006. She was nominated All-American as a 3-Year-Old in 2007 receiving high honorable mention. The industry will never forget Apple as the first million-dollar cow. Apple topped the Global Glamour sale in 2008 and made history again. Apple re-entered the show ring in 2009, and staked her claim as the Reserve Grand Champion Red & White at the Royal Winter Fair. She was nominated All-American Red and White 5-Year-Old that year. After taking Holstein International’s World Champion Red and White Cow honors in 2010, it was time for Apple to hit the colored shavings again in 2011. A true crowd favorite, Apple was named Grand Champion and Best Udder at the 2011 Grand International Red and White Show. She was again named All-American Red and White as an aged cow in 2011. This year, Apple took top honors in the 125,000 lb. cow class at the International Red and White Show before reclaiming a spot in the championship ring. To culminate a fantastic 2013, she was also named Holstein International’s Red Impact Cow of the Year. Apple is a maternal sister to dominant red sire KHW Kite Advent-Red-ET, and completes seven generations of EX. Apple’s record at 4-01 2x and 365 days yielded 35,650 pounds of milk with 4.7 1682F and 3.7 1314P.
Carley Krull - Krull Advent Smiley-Red-ET & Krull Larson Dirty Girl-Red
What started as a 4-H project turned into a dream day for any junior member at this year’s International Red and White Show. Carley Krull had two junior bred and owned animals in the parade for Grand Champion after having received Reserve Junior Champion and Reserve Senior Champion honors with her animals. Krull Larson Dirty Girl-Red, owned by Cassy, Bryce and Carley Krull, is the product of a purchase the kids made at a National Convention Sale. Dirty Girl’s dam, Hauve Advent DreamyRed-ET, was their selection after purchasing a first choice from Tyrone Johnson. Dreamy completes five generations of Excellent dams back to Dellia herself. Dreamy, EX-93, has a tremendous show record in her own right, highlighted by being named Reserve Junior All-American Junior 2-Year-Old (B&Ws) and Nominated All-American Red & White Junior 2 Year Old. She was also HM Junior All-American Junior 3-Year-Old and the Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the 2012 Midwest Spring Red & White Show. Dirty Girl-Red is due in March with an Action-Red bull calf. She has maternal sisters by Goldwyn, Mr Burns and Redburst. In fact, Dirty Girl is the third daughter of Dreamy to be Reserve Junior Champion at a national show. Her Debonair daughter, DreamgirlRed, was Reserve Junior Champion of the Red & White Junior Show at NAILE in 2010 and her black and white Mr Burns daughter, Dream Big, was the winning Winter Calf and Reserve Junior Champion at the NAILE open show in 2011. Carley’s other homebred animal, Krull Advent Smiley-Red-ET, was named Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show after placing as 1st junior and 2nd open in the 5-Year-Old class. Smiley, EX-93 with an EX-94 mammary system, is currently working on a record of 23,156 4.1 948 3.1 709 in 252 days. Leading up to World Dairy Expo, Smiley had already had a great show season. She was 1st junior and 2nd open 5-Year-Old at the Midwest Spring Red & White Show and Reserve All-Wisconsin and Junior All-Wisconsin 5-Year-Old at the Wisconsin Red & White Championship Show. She was also named Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show. In August, Smiley was 1st 5-Year-Old and Reserve Grand Champion of the Red and White Show at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair and took home the Supreme Champion Bred & Owned banner. Smiley is an Advent daughter of Rocher Jordan Snow-Red, EX-94, also a winning show cow for Carley. She has twice been nominated for All-American Red & White and was the Junior AllAmerican Aged Cow in 2010. Snow was purchased by Brian and Cindy Krull as a pick at a UWPlatteville Pioneer Classic sale and was given to Carley as her first Red & White 4-H project. Smiley has a Deuce yearling and a two-year-old Mighty-P daughter that just calved in. She will be flushed again this fall.

A partnership born at the 2012 World Dairy Expo really paid off for Wisconsin junior Ryan Lauber and Minnesota juniors Joseph, 18–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/November 2013
Zach, Jerome & Darian Stransky at this year’s show. Cleland Advent Korie-Red-ET was the winning aged cow and eventual Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the 2013 International Red and White Show. She was also named Reserve Supreme Champion of the Junior Show. Korie, bred by Jim and Vicky Cleland of Clinton, made the trip to World Dairy Expo last year and was housed with the Stranshome string. She placed 4th as a 5-Year-old for the Clelands at the show, and was nominated All-American. Reid Stransky approached the Clelands about purchasing Korie, and Madison show string helper Ryan Lauber also expressed interest to Reid about becoming partners on the cow. Since Ryan would still be a junior member in 2013, they decided to put Korie in Ryan’s name with all of Reid’s junior-age sons. Pregnant with a bull calf when the purchase was made, Korie calved in July and looked really good from the start. They took her to the Minnesota State Fair where she was named Grand Champion of the Red and White Show. The partners are hoping to do some IVF work on Korie this fall and try to have her bred back for the 2014 show season. Korie was recently raised to EX-94 with an EX-94 mammary system. She is backed by seven Very Good dams and had a 5-00 record in 365 days of 31,570M with 4.7 1490F and 3.3 1052P lbs. Korie is housed at Stranshome Holsteins, Owatonna, Minnesota. Stranshome is home to 140 cows, including 20 show cows that are housed in box stalls in a hoop barn for specialized care.
Criter-Ridge Reba-Red-ET – Crystal, Jordan, Josh, Jake, Connor & Lauren Siemers
It’s been a successful summer for the Siemers family and CriterRidge Reba-Red-ET, which was topped off with Reba being tapped for Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Junior Show honors at the 2013 International Red & White Show. She was third in the open show and the first junior as a junior three-year-old. Reba is scored EX-92 at 3-05 and had a 2-00 record in 353 days of 26,700 4.4% 1168F and 3.1% 839P. No stranger to the show ring, Reba placed 8th at World Dairy Expo as a spring yearling and 8th as a Junior 2-Year-Old. She grew several inches while she was dry and really came into herself after freshening again in June. Reba, with Jordan on the halter, had a great summer in the ring and was named Intermediate Champion at the Wisconsin Red & White Championship Show. She went on to be named Supreme Champion of the 2013 Wisconsin Junior State Fair after winning Grand Champion of the Red & White Show. The Siemers family purchased Reba as a heifer in a tag sale. They felt she had a great combination of type, pedigree and interestingly enough, index. Reba is a Contender from an
EX-93 show-winning Advent and then five more Excellent dams back to Roxy. She sports a GTPI of +1889, which is pretty impressive for her sire stack. Reba is currently bred back for next year and is due in May. The Siemers are also excited about the technology that IVF affords them and are planning on trying to make some fall calves during her pregnancy. Crystal, Jordan, Josh, Jake, Connor and Lauren are active players of the Siemers Holsteins team. Siemers Holsteins is home to over 5,000 Registered Holsteins and the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of the Siemers family. The rolling herd average on 2748 cows is 34,453M with 4.0 1379F and 3.0 1044P lbs. The herd currently boasts over 100 Excellent cows and nearly 150 Very Good two-year-olds. They also farm nearly 5000 acres of corn, alfalfa and wheat.
Cassy Krull wins 2013 Merle Howard Award
A three-breed award winner equally well known in Red & White, Holstein and Jersey circles, Cassy Krull won the 2013 Merle Howard Award. The daughter of the Cindy Krull and the late Brian Krull of Lake Mills, Wis., Krull is the tenth person to receive this honor. The Merle Howard Award is presented to the top junior exhibitor at World Dairy Expo who demonstrates exemplary skills in fitting, showmanship and overall passion for the dairy industry. This 20-year-old is a critical member in operating her family’s 800-acre dairy farm in southeast Wisconsin and is involved in all phases of the operation. Additionally, she gained valuable experience in 2011 and 2012 when she worked for Ron and Christy Ratliff ’s Jersey herd in Garnett, Kan. A very talented leadsperson and equally gifted with the clipper, Krull recently won showmanship and fitting competitions at her local county fair on her way to being named Supreme Champion Showman. Additionally, she placed among the top five in showmanship competitions at World Dairy Expo, the Wisconsin State Fair, and was named Supreme Champion Showman at the Southern National Show. Krull also is the first woman to be a leadsperson at World Dairy Expo’s World Classic Sale. In junior breed programs, Krull was named a Distinguished Younger Junior Member by Holstein Association USA in 2010 and just this year, she was named the 58th National Jersey Youth Achievement Award winner. Previously, she served as the National Jersey Queen. A young leader, Krull was elected the Wisconsin Junior Activities Committee and was employed by the 2013 Red & White Dairy Cattle Association as their summer intern. Additionally, she served on the All- American Jersey Show Activities Committee. Above all, this young lady is a hard worker, who fits and prepares her own animals for the show each year. She has had success in three breeds and owns 40 head. In 2010, Krull showed her bred and owned cow Krull Dundee Ellory-ET who went on to be named Honorable Mention Senior Champion at World Dairy Expo’s International Junior Holstein Show. The next year, her three-year-old Jersey, Ratliff Sambo Demi-ET took home third-place honors in the National Jersey Jug in Louisville, Kentucky. And just this year, Krull Larson Dirty GirlRed was named Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Red & White Show at World Dairy Expo. Krull is a sophomore majoring in animal science and agri-business at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Previous award winners of the Merle Howard Award include: 2004, Robert Teixeira, Turlock, Calif.; 2005, Matthew Mitchell, Lafollette, Tenn.; 2006, Greta Koebel, Three Oaks, Mich.; 2007, Brandon Ferry, Hilbert, Wis.; and 2008, Kelly Lee, Johnson Creek, Wis.; 2009 Kyle Natzke, Fond du Lac, Wis.; 2010 Stephanie Aves, Popular Grove, Ill.; 2011 Karen Anderson, Lester Prairie, Minn.; and 2012 Cy Conard, Sharon Springs, N.Y. Merle Howard was a respected dairy industry pioneer. Winner of the 1954 Klussendorf Award, Howard was a herd manager, Holstein classifier and later a sales and export businessman. Karyn Schauf recognized as World Dairy Expo’s Dairy Woman of the Year
Karyn S. Schauf, and her husband Bob own and operate Indianhead Holsteins, Ltd. of Barron, Wisconsin, and have four sons. The welcome sign at the tree-lined driveway of the Schauf family farm is a large welcome sign that reads: “Indianhead Farm - Founded on Great Families.” This mantra seems to be fitting for both Karyn and Bob’s family as well as the world-renown cow families that have been developed in their 110-cow Registered Holstein herd. Karyn’s dedication to her family, farm and community is evident in her achievements as recognized by the global dairy universe. As a youngster, Karyn followed in her grandfather’s footsteps at his well-known Holstein operation, Clinton Stock Farm. But her real catalyst into agriculture and agriculture promotion occurred when she became Alice in Dairyland in 1977 while attending college. Her experiences as Wisconsin’s agriculture ambassador in that role provided her a sound foundation to become one of the leading ladies in dairy promotion in her community and beyond. Indianhead Holsteins, Ltd. has become globally recognized for its great cow families that compete well in the Showring. The farm is comprised of 1,000 acres of crops and the purebred dairy farm with twelve employees. In addition, over several years, Karyn, and her family at Indianhead Holsteins, have become known around the world as host to more than fifty international college student trainees from countries including England, Ireland, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Japan and Mexico. They also operate a separate livestock bedding business and produce alternative fuel from canola seed grown on their farm. Karyn is the partner and business manager for all three enterprises.
Always volunteering for opportunities to promote agriculture, Karyn has served as president of the Barron County Farm Bureau for the past five years. She just completed a multiple year commitment on the Wisconsin Farm Technology Day Executive Committee for host, Barron County. She has also been a member of the Barron County Ag Promoters, a Wisconsin delegate to the National Holstein Convention and chairman of the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board Market Development Committee. Karyn and Bob have been awarded the Wisconsin Outstanding Young Farmer Award as well as the National Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1987, sponsored by the Jaycees. They have been recognized as the Wisconsin Holstein Distinguished Young Breeder and an Elite Breeder by Holstein USA. The State of Wisconsin bestowed the Governor’s Export Achievement Award for their sale of Holstein embryos across the globe.

The Trempealeau County Holstein Breeders had a great 2013 with their annual meeting in the spring and June dairy breakfast at the Alan Lundberg family in June. A few families attended the Adult Holstein Convention in Marathon County where Steve and Amanda Killian received a Top Performer award and Bob and Shelly Hart were recognized with a Young Adult Educational Award. Current officers were re-elected to their current officer roles at the meeting. The Adult Breeders decided to sponsor a monetary amount for the winning Senior Champion and Junior Champion of the Open Show at the 2013 Trempealeau County Fair to try to increase attendance at the show. The group also contributed to the state association and helped cover a portion of the cost of a traveling fitting box that would be available to Trempealeau County juniors to check-out for the upcoming show season. The Trempealeau County juniors recognized Megan Nelson for receiving an YMR award and Reece Lehman for receiving a 12 & Under recognition at the 2013 Junior Convention. Reece also won the junior speaking contest as well. The group traveled to National Convention in Indianapolis, IN in June and then held two fitting and showing clinics for the county. A general session was held at Thimble-Peak Holsteins in Ettrick for 20 junior members and an advanced fitting session focusing on toplines at the Nelson Farm in Blair. The juniors are looking forward to the upcoming 2014 Junior Convention in the Dells!

Public Relations • Ability to communicate to all areas of the Association in a timely manner • Assist in any communication materials needed for members or external media such as pamphlets, letters, bios and entry forms • Work with external sponsors as it pertains to awards, signage and coordination of events • Build valuable partnerships with industry partners Web, Print and More • Write press releases announcing upcoming events & summarizing placings and/or winnings. • Compile and publish updated marketing materials on WHA website such as press releases, entry forms, event details and imagery. • Take photos of event winners when needed to post online and share with Editor. This will require the creation of an archive for yearend presentations. • Interview Wisconsin Holstein breeders and write profile articles as assigned by the Editor; this may require taking photos for the article. • Write articles of interest for the WI Holstein News and website as well as identify potential roundtable discussions for the News. • Opportunity to learn database management and design e-newsletter creative.

The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Young Adult Committee will be offering monetary awards for young adults to attend educational events in 2014. Educational events include, but are not limited to, Young Dairy Leader’s Institute, World Dairy Expo, and World Ag Expo. Bob & Shelly Hart, Galesville Bob and I currently reside at Pine Knoll Farms in Galesville, WI which is located in Trempealeau County. This was my home farm and we officially took over the dairy in June of 2012. I have been a member of the WI Holstein Association ever since I was a member of the Junior Association at the age of 9. Bob became a member in 2003. We currently raise Registered Holstein and Brown Swiss dairy cattle. Bob is in on the farm full-time and I work part-time at Dairyland Laboratories as a lab technician. Along with my mom, Linda, we milk 60 cows twice daily and work side-by-side one another in daily farm tasks. Why did you complete the YAC Educational Award application? We were introduced to this award application last year and thought it would be a great opportunity to branch out to see the aspects of the Holstein industry. Bob and I have always remained active in the dairy industry, but thought this would be an extra push to try something new.
What dairy industry event did you attend and what did you learn from the event? We elected to attend the 2013 National Holstein Association Convention. It allowed us to learn more about the Holstein Association at a national level. In addition, it gave insight to the business aspects of the industry and also allowed us to gain networking opportunities. What is your favorite Wisconsin Holstein or dairy industry event and explain why? This makes for a tough question. We would have to say for the Wisconsin Holstein Association side, we enjoyed attending the state meeting. It allowed us to catch up with fellow friends and dairyman as well as at the same time gave us a chance to see the year in review for the association. On a dairy industry side, World Dairy Expo would be a favorite. It truly is a show like no other! What has been your most memorable moment in the dairy industry? It would be hard to narrow in on one single moment, instead I would have to say they are more like milestones in working with our dairy herd. Favorites would be when the homebred cows bring home the blue ribbons at shows or when you have that great classification day on the farm and are able to add more Excellents to the herd. On another note, we also take pride in the moments when you are able to witness youth you have coached receive their first blue ribbon with their project animal. Bob and I enjoy working with youth dairy programs and we encourage individuals to become active in the dairy industry. Would you recommend others to complete the Educational Award application? Yes, we would certainly recommend for others to take the time to complete the application. It truly is a great opportunity to challenge yourself to branch out to see the aspects of the dairy industry. In this industry, times are always changing and there are always new things to be discovered. Thus, we feel this is a way to allow individuals to develop new insight or networking tools that can be beneficial to their own herd. Bob and I truly thank the Wisconsin Holstein Association for this award and wish to encourage other to take part.
Austin Martin Benefit Sunday, December 1 • Holiday Inn Express, Janesville • 11:30-4:00 p.m. Austin Martin, son of Joe and Bonnie Martin, is 9 years old. On what should have been his first day of 4th grade at Milton’s Northside Intermediate School, he was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma cancer. The 2014 WI Holstein Treasure Quest What is the WI Holstein Treasure Quest? This event is a celebration and promotion of high caliber calves and their breeders and owners. Proceeds from this event benefit the state association members and fund the state picnic held each year.
What can state members do to get involved?
State members can enter Registered Holstein heifers born between March 1 and December 31, 2013. Any state member can nominate a heifer using the form below. All entries must be received with a fee of $50 by February 1, 2014. By entering your calf in the Treasure Quest, you are committed to potentially having the calf selected as the winner. Members can also participate by purchasing a lottery ticket for the chance to win one of the entered calves. There will be 125 lottery tickets printed, and 123 of them will be sold for $100 each. The remaining two tickets will be auctioned off; one will benefit the WHA Scholarship fund and the other the WHA Juniors. These auctions will be held at the state adult convention and spring show, and the tickets purchased will automatically be in the top 12 drawing.
When and where is the drawing held?
The raffle drawing will be held following the selection of Intermediate Champion at the 2014 Midwest National Spring Holstein Show on Saturday, April 29, 2014. Ticket holders must not be present to win, however, they do need a representative to choose a calf or bucket on their behalf. Ten tickets will be drawn on the day of the show, and they will be joined by the two tickets auctioned for a chance to win a new Holstein calf. Eleven winners will receive consolation buckets, valued at $100 each and one lucky ticket holder will go home with a calf. The breeder whose calf is chosen will receive a check for $7000, and those not chosen get to return home!

Happy Fall Everyone! Crisp leaves, bountiful crops, pumpkin spice lattes, and the colored shavings are all things that make autumn so special. This fall has been the best one yet. I have fond memories that all take place during the first week in October. From watching the Holstein show as a little girl with my mom, to running around the Exhibition Hall with my cousin Jordan, collecting as much “free stuff ” as possible. This year’s World Dairy Expo has been my favorite. Nothing has been more exciting than watching and cheering for Wisconsin Holstein members who graced the royal purple shavings. Congratulations to all the breeders, exhibitors, leadsmen, fitters, nightline crews, and “poop catchers.” Your hard work and dedication definitely stood out!
Morgan and I were able to watch some of Wisconsin’s best judges select their favorites throughout the week. Congratulations to Paul Trapp, Lynn Harbaugh, and Katie Bue. I think we can all agree that they did an excellent job sorting through many exceptional, quality classes. As the weather begins to turn colder and colder, it is never too early to start thinking about the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Junior Convention! I encourage everyone to try something new this year, as from my own personal experience, it has been incredibly rewarding. Perhaps write an essay, participate in the speaking contest, or study for hours on end acquiring dairy bowl facts. But as always, have fun! For the older members, don’t hesitate to run for a leadership role. Apply for a royalty position, or strive to be the next best JAC. With your help, we can be insured that 2014 will run smoothly. I hope to see you January 3-5 in Wisconsin Dells. I know Fond du Lac County has an incredible convention planned for all of us!

SALE REPORTS Fond du Lac County Holstein Classic - September 17
As you walked up and down the barn aisle at Great Northern on the evening on September 17, 2013 the one comment you would hear continually was “what outstanding udders on this great group of young cows... beautiful udders, one right after another!” It certainly was a superb group of milky young cows that were offered in the 68th edition of the Fond du Lac County Holstein Classic! A nice crowd was on hand and showed their appreciation of the quality consignments with steady bidding throughout the sale. The 54 milking cows that passed through the sale ring averaged $2,502. A favorite among the five red and white cows selling was the two year old Secure from the EX-92 2E GMD DOM Special Missy with 36,320 4.8 1756 3.3 1186 and the dam of 4 EX and 13 VG daughters. Next dam is the EX-94 4E DOM three time All-American, Miss Special, then the EX-94 2E Miata-Red. This lovely uddered young cow sold milking 80 pounds and carrying service to Licorice-Red. Consigned by Doug Lemke, Chilton, WI she sold for $5,100. Allen & Shirley Sell, Watertown, WI placed the final bid to add her to their well-known Sellcrest herd. The consignment of James Senn, Campbellsport, WI caught the eye of many! This VG-87 Cadet three year old sold milking 110 lbs. and due in March with a Dorcy heifer calf. Making well over 30,000 this lactation, this tall, well balanced young cow is sure to make a big jump in score as well!!! San Ron Holsteins, Sheboygan, WI took her home at the price of $4,450. The tall, silky, black Damion from the Reserve All-American, Scientific Gold Dana Rae-ET EX-95 2E, was another crowd favorite. Budjon-JK Damion Dorie-ET had just classified VG-86, was milking 80 pounds and was serviced to Atwood. Budjon Farms and Joel Kietzman, Lomira, WI consigned this potential ninth generation Excellent who sold for $4,200 to Jake Kruschke, New Richmond, WI. Budjon Farms & Joel Kietzman also consigned the fourth high seller in Budjon-JK Durham Erupt-ET. This two year old Durham has just scored VG-86. She was milking 90 pounds and sold bred to Gold Chip. Her dam is the EX-96 4E GMD DOM All-American and sixth generation Excellent, Budjon-JK Linjet Eileen-ET. Charles Westphal paid $4,100 to add this promising young cow to his breeding program at Westphalia Holsteins, Brownsville, WI. The impressive uddered Goldwyn offered by Lauber Farms, Union Grove, WI commanded $3,800 from John Krueger, Hilbert, WI. In her third lactation and scored VG-86, Hillpine Goldwyn Fawn sold milking 100 pounds and serviced to Aftershock. This fourth generation Excellent or Very Good looks to pick up more points next classification! Kem-Gems Holsteins Complete Dispersal - July 8
There was a great deal of interest and enthusiasm as fellow dairyman gathered at the Great Northern Sales Arena on July 8, 2013 for the Kem-Gems Holsteins Complete Dispersal. Owners Brad & Melinda Kemink, Cambria, Wisconsin, bred an impressive herd with superb udders and great frames. The current rolling herd average stood at 28,230 3.4% 966 3.0% 839. The June test showed an average or 88.4 pounds with an SCC of 120. The first cow in the ring set the tempo for the day as the bidding was fast and furious with the gavel coming down at $4,100. Just classified VG-86 and milking over 100 pounds, this Talent made 26,615 3.7 991 2.9 790 at 2-01. Backed by 3 dams over 31,000M, with her dam a VG-88 Mailing dtr. Selling for $4,000 was Lot 1, a VG-88 Lheros dtr just fresh with second calf after making 28,676 3.6 1032 3.3 948 at 2-00. Her EX-91 Durham dam has records to 33,971M and goes back to an EX-93 Mattador that was successful on the tanbark for the Keminks and founded a great family for them as well. Twelve cows sold for $3,000 or higher with the 52 Registered and grade milking cows averaging $2,401. Well balanced, straight lined heifers filled the heifer pens with the top price of $3,000 coming on a stunning July 28, 2012 summer yearling by Atwood. Her VG-87 Stormatic dam has records to 27,895M and descends from a strong Canadian maternal line. The sale was managed by Great Northern Land & Cattle Co., Inc. Darrell Worden sold the sale with Kevin Jorgensen adding pedigree commentary. Fielding bids were Rick Bovre, Brandon Ferry, Mike Holschbach and Chad Ryan. The sale averaged $1682 on 124 head of homebred Registered and grade Holsteins.

Why wouldn’t you want to be a student at this great university? I wouldn’t change anything, I had my heart set on Madison and nobody was going to tell me differently. That meant in high school I had to put in the work academically to reach my goal – and it was worth it! What has been your most memorable college experience? My most memorable experience is a hard one to pick because all of the clubs, judging trips, Badger football games, doing reproduction research, study abroad and just being at a worldrenowned Dairy Science school. If I had to pick, it would be being a part of the 16th Badger Invitational Sale as a consignment chair. I learned so much leading up to the week of the sale and during the week that I wouldn’t have experienced otherwise. I would also say all of the friends and professional connections I have made in the dairy industry. What has been your favorite course? My favorite course so far has been Dairy Science 375 Reproduction taught by Paul Fricke and Julio Giordano. This class was very practical where we learned to AI, ultrasound, palpate, and the economics of reproduction. What are your future career goals? To get a career in the dairy industry with a focus towards dairy pharmaceutical sales as I really enjoyed working for Zoetis this past summer as an intern. WI Holstein Junior Member Agreement The Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association is open to membership for those persons under the age of 21 as of January 1st of the membership year. The purpose of this organization is to encourage youthful interest in the promotion of the Registered Holstein industry. To be eligible for membership, all juniors must sign this agreement and agree to abide by the rules hereinafter set forth. Failure to honor any of these rules will subject the junior member to immediate revocation of membership status, including the opportunity of participation in WI Holstein Association sponsored activities and events. The following rules shall apply to all members: 1. Use or possession of any alcoholic beverage or controlled substances strictly prohibited. 2. No member shall engage in any behavior prohibited by state statute, local ordinance or Board Policy (which shall include, but is not limited to vandalism, theft, truancy, assault, threats to personal safety or property and flagrant misconduct). 3. Members, at all times, shall demonstrate good citizenship and recognize the value of setting and adhering to the highest standards of conduct and performance. 4. At all Association sponsored functions, activities and trips, the rules of conduct specified by adult chaperones and advisors shall be at all times observed by members. 5. All members shall recognize the right of the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Junior Activities Committee, the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and its staff, adult advisors and chaperones to have the authority to enforce the rules as established and authorized herein. Members and/or their parents/guardian shall accept any financial responsibility for the enforcement of the provisions herein. For the purposes of the observance of the rules of membership herein, there is established a Board which shall consist of the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Holstein Association, the President of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and the Chairman of the Wisconsin Holstein
Association Junior Activities Committee. The purpose of this Board shall be to oversee the fair application of the rules of membership and afford the right of due process to all members. Due process shall be afforded by: explaining the evidence against the member, giving the member an opportunity to explain his/her version of the facts, thereafter, it is a matter of discretion by the Board whether to have the accuser/observer summoned and whether to permit cross examination of said individuals, due process must be initiated within 120 days of receipt of membership revocation. Award opportunities still available WHA Royalty
This is a position for Junior Holstein members that are interested in becoming an ambassador for the WI Holstein Association. The WI Holstein Royalty will be asked to travel throughout the state to various events. They will make speaking and educational appearances, hand out awards at appropriate events, and be called on to give brief speeches. They will act as the Host or Hostess at WI Holstein events. Entrants must be between the ages of 16 to 20 as of January 1, 2014 to become WI Holstein Royalty. Royalty candidates will be required to interview at the WI Holstein Junior Convention. This interview takes precedence over other events at Junior Holstein Convention. They will also be required to participate in the Intermediate or Senior Speaking Contest at the Junior Convention. Resume and applications are due to the WHA office by November 15, 2013.
WHY Friend
Nominate an adult “friend” or leader for the Wisconsin Holstein Youth Friend of the Year Award! The Junior Holstein program has been successful because of parents and youth supporters, and this award is a great opportunity to recognize youth “friends” that have given a helping hand or gone above and beyond to aid in the development of the state’s Holstein youth. There are two divisions 1 to 5 years of leadership and 6 years and over of leadership. Be sure to include the division that your “friend” would qualify for on the application. Stories and applications for this award should be 250 words or less and be to the state office by November 15, 2013. All applications submitted will be kept on file for three (3) years.

Ads, photos, crafts, and more! There are a ton of opportunities for recognition at junior convention in the contest room. Juniors can enter photography, arts and crafts, folding display, advertisements, scrapbooks and digital scrapbooks. Banner Contest
This year, each county is being asked to create a banner that represents the state of Wisconsin and the dairy industry. The most creative and impressive banner will move on to compete at National Convention in July 2014. Banners must be no larger than 3' X 5' and come hung on a dowel rod. The banner can be any shape or form as long as it's under this size. Banners can be any color and can be made out of paper or material. Points will be deducted from the total score if they exceed the 3' x 5' size. A complete list of rules and sign up sheet can be found on our website at www.wisholsteins.com/juniorawards. Top honors at the 2013 National Holstein Convention went to those states that incorporated the National Holstein Convention theme. The winning banner from Wisconsin will go on to represent us at the 2014 National Convention in Iowa!
Calf Raffle Tickets Still Available
The largest fundraising effort of the year is underway for junior programs and events – the Junior Raffle! The calf this year is donated by Forest-Ridge Holsteins, and the Kurt and Sarah Loehr family. There are several additional items available from generous donations, including UW-Mens’ Badger Hockey tickets to the Sat., January 11 game against Michigan, a NASCO gift card, various semen certificates and World Dairy Expo passes. I hope everyone is having a safe, productive harvest and enjoyed the extended warm weather through World Dairy Expo. We had a great week at WDE in the WHA booth catching up with our members and meeting potential new members from around the globe. We also gave away over 1000 copies of the News and 700 copies of the Breeder Calendar - a great promotional tool for WHA and you, the breeders. Wisconsin had another great showing at WDE, especially in the Red & White Show. You can read more about the Champions from this year’s show that came out of Wisconsin in this issue, along with all of the results of the Wisconsin members/owners that placed in the top 10 in all three Holstein shows. I took lots and lots of lots of photos, so if you’re looking for candids of your kid or animal on the colored shavings, give me a call or email and I’ll see if I have something for you. You can also check out the WDE Facebook page to see some of the photos I took during the week. Coming up next month is our annual youth issue. This is a great time to congratulate that special junior in your family that has had a successful year with their projects or send holiday wishes to other WHA members that have purchased genetics from you. Remember, junior ads receive a 10% discount off the page rate that they can use one time in any issue throughout the year. Give me a call by November 10 if you’d like to reserve an ad space for the December issue. I also want to remind everyone of the upcoming deadline for our annual cover contest.
