Obituaries Stanley Bird
Stanley E. Bird, 84, formerly of Oakfield, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 19, 1930, in Fond du Lac County, the son of the late Bennett and Ethel (Kintzler) Bird, and on May 26, 1951, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Kolterman at the Oakfield United Methodist Church. Stanley began his adult life operating a dairy farm and remained true to his roots throughout his life. After receiving his Journalism degree at the University of Wisconsin Madison he went on to become executive publisher of Holstein World overseeing a family of dairy magazines. He was a key long term member of the organizing committees for the World Dairy Expo and World Ag Expo. He moved several times during his life living in Madison, Mequon, New Brighton, Minnesota, and Mesa, Arizona. He traveled frequently and used this as an opportunity to stay connected to his numerous friends and extended family across North America. No matter where he lived, he remained faithful to the local United Methodist Church and to the Masonic Lodge in Fond du Lac. In later years he and Kathy summered in a cabin built on the Bird family farm near Oakfield, where he was born and raised. He was living there at the time of his final illness. Stanley was a gregarious person who made friends where ever he went. He will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathleen; four children, William (Linda) Bird of Germantown, David (Janet) Bird of Edgerton, Thomas (Karen) Bird of Uxbridge, Massachusetts and Barbara (Bruce) Schmidt of Buffalo, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a brother, Robert Bird of Fond du Lac; two sisters, Jeanne (Arthur) Culver of La Palma, California and Ruth (Stephen) Scholly of Glenview, Illinois. Marlowe Nelson
Marlowe E. Nelson, age 86 of Viroqua and formerly of Westby, Wisconsin, passed away on Oct. 4, 2014. He was born on January 22, 1928 in Racine County, Wisconsin to Ralph and Hilda (Lorenzen) Nelson. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked as county extension agent in Ozaukee and Kenosha Counties until he entered the U.S. Army. After serving in the Korean Conflict, he earned his master’s degree from Michigan State University. On June 25, 1955 he married Phyllis Peterson, who preceded him in death on February 5, 1976. On November 24, 1977, he married Barbara (Held) Wheeler. Marlowe was the sire procurement manager at Tri-State Breeders (now Accelerated Genetics) for many years. After leaving Tri-State, he founded International Protein Sires with his partner Al Piper. He was an active member of: LaBelle Lodge #84 F&AM, Viroqua Chapter of the OES, Scottish Rite, and Vernon Shrine Club, and he held state-level 6–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/November 2014
positions in Eastern Star. He was also a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Westby, serving as congregational president, Sugar Creek Bible Camp, Vernon County Fair Association, Vernon County Holstein Association, past president of the Wisconsin Holstein Association, Westby Area Historical Society, Vernon County Historical Society, American Legion and VFW, “Just For Fun” Quartet and the Viroqua Area Men’s Chorus. While stationed in Japan, he struck up a conversation about cattle with dairy farmers near his camp. This led to lifelong friendships and development of a program that brought over 100 young Japanese dairymen to work as trainees with Wisconsin breeders. On May 24, 2000, Marlowe was decorated in Tokyo with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government for his contribution to improved genetics and dairy management in the Japanese dairy industry. In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by children: Amy (Stephen) Burnett of Lincoln, NE, Guy (Gwen Haw) Nelson of Seattle, WA, Anne Nelson of Walla Walla, WA, and Eric (Julie) Nelson of Eau Claire; step-daughter, Linda (Roger) Gunderson of Onalaska; grandchildren: Katy Burnett, Daniel Burnett, Peter Burnett, Mari Hill, Reed McKenzie, Stephanie (John) Betz, Evan (Kate) Nelson, Sherry (Paul) Wertanen and Shannon (Mike) Dentice; great-grandchildren: Emma Nelson, Julie, Jake and Jayda Wertanen; one brother, Allyn (Gladys) Nelson; other relatives and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Phyllis; two brothers: Gordon and Warren: sister-in-law, Harriet Nelson and his mother-in-law, Mabel Peterson. Glen Jensen
Glen A. Jensen, age 72, of Ocala, Florida, formerly of Reedsburg, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. He was born on December 6, 1941, in Juneau County, Wisconsin, the son of Roy and Irene (Gulczyski) Jensen. On September 10, 1960, Glen was united in marriage to Margaret McCathie in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. This marriage was blessed with two children. Glen retired from Accelerated Genetics in 2004 after 39 years of service. He worked for Fedderly Chrysler Dodge Jeep for three years then returned to Accelerated Genetics for three more years. In his retirement, Glen wrote and published two books, “Bovine Intervention” and “Bull Justice”. His job allowed him to travel to many countries through the years and he also served on a mission trip in Alaska. Glen loved to golf and bowl. He was a member of bowling teams in Wisconsin and Florida. He enjoyed all sports, especially the Packers and the Badgers, and was an avid gardener and took pride in maintaining his lawn. Glen was an active member of the Reedsburg United Methodist Church and enjoyed his Florida church family as well. Above all, Glen believed family came first. He would go out of his way to attend family events and be there for them. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Douglas R. Jensen. Glen is survived by his wife, Margaret of FL and Sparta; children: Toni (Jeff) Burrows of Sparta, Scott (Michelle) Jensen of Onalaska; Grandchildren: Kevin (Mandy) Moore of LaCrosse, Darcie Hanson (special friend, Andy Girard) of Sparta, Jason Moore of LaCrosse, Bradley Jensen, Thomas Jensen, and Michael Jensen of Onalaska; greatgrandchildren: Aidyn Hanson, Aylah Hanson of Sparta, Alexis Moore of LaCrosse; sister, Loraine (Jake) Tornga of TX; brother, Dennis Jensen of Tomah; sister-in-law, Sharon Jensen of Tomah; several nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends.

Young Adult Education Award applications due November 15
What dairy industry event did you attend and what did you learn from the event?
The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Young Adult Committee will be offering monetary awards for young adults to attend educational events in 2015. To apply for a Young Adult Award, interested applicants should call the WHA office or visit the website at www.wisholsteins.com. Applicants must be a member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and their primary source of income should be from the farm. Educational events include, but are not limited to, Young Dairy Leader’s Institute, World Dairy Expo, and World Ag Expo. Applications must be submitted by November 15 and winners will be announced prior to the 2015 Adult Convention. Brandon and I own and operate Fer-Crest Farms in Hilbert, WI. The farm consist of 40 acres and 80 registered Holsteins and Jerseys. We started farming on our own in November 2010 and moved the herd to our current location in Calumet County in April 2012. We both have been members on the WHA since we joined the Junior Holstein Association at a young age. Brandon was a member of the Fond du Lac County Junior Holsteins and I was a member of the Richland County Junior Holsteins. We both became adult members in 2008 after we graduated from the Junior Association.
Why did you complete the YAC Educational Award application?
We were encouraged by fellow WHA members to fill out this award. This is just one of the many different resources that are available to members and we took advantage of this opportunity.
We were able to attend the WI Adult Holstein Convention. We were able to gain different industry insight from the meetings and discussions held as well as take advantage of the networking opportunities.
What is your favorite Wisconsin Holstein or dairy industry event and explain why?
Our favorite industry event would definitely be World Dairy Expo. We enjoy exhibiting on the colored shavings, working with the elite cattle, catching up with friends, and making lasting memories. It also holds a special place to us since we got engaged at WDE in 2011.
What has been your most memorable moment in the dairy industry?
There have been so many different lasting memories created over the years but the most memorable involves a cow that we, along with our partners Greg and Joel Bourne, bred and developed. TJ Classic Minister Venus-ET, who was purchased privately by River Valley in 2013, was named the 2014 Grand Champion of the Jersey Show and Supreme Champion at WDE. Watching a cow that we raised from a baby calf grace the colored shavings and be crowned Supreme was unbelievable.
Would you recommend others to complete the Educational Award application?
Yes, we would definitely encourage others to fill out the applications. The form is really easy to complete, just reflecting on your past involvement in the dairy industry and what your goals are for the future. The WHA, and the dairy industry as a whole, have so many different resources available that members need to take advantage of. The dairy industry is always changing and we need to continue to learn and grow with it.

Spruce Lawn Farms The Ubbelohde Family, Plymouth by Ashley Yager

et back in a green grove of sturdy and towering trees just off Highway 23 between Plymouth and Sheboygan Falls, Spruce Lawn Farms is as picturesque as its people are passionate about breeding Registered Holsteins. Glenn and Linda Ubbelohde have been the caretakers of the farm for more than 50 years. Glenn’s grandfather Frank started the registered business in the 1930s when he realized the advantage to owning registered cattle. At that time, Frank was into breeding bulls and was a member of the Sheboygan County bull club.

Learning from the Right People It didn’t take long for Glenn to get bit by the registered bug and grow the milking herd with lessons learned from his mentors. Ray Brubacker, a manager at Lakeside Farms, and David Bachmann, were the two people that Glenn credits most for teaching him to breed cows. Their philosophies on breeding strength into cattle, producing boxcar rumps with the idea that the wider they can get, the better, is something that Glenn stands by today. Bachmann especially stood by the idea that breeding from multiple generations of Excellent will breed to the average inheritance. Walking through the barn at Spruce Lawn, these theories and years of careful breeding show as there is not a narrow-rumped female in the bunch. Glenn has been overseeing the breeding program for 52 years; a job that sparked his first purchase of a registered cow at age 14. Utilizing a Type-Focused Breeding Program Under Glenn’s management, the number of cows in the barn grew over the years from 20 to 75. Glenn was bit by the show bug early on, and as a 4-H member he took his first Grand Champion honors at the county fair in 1968. Over the years the Ubbelohdes have continued to exhibit at the local, county, district, state and national levels. Today, Glenn’s daughter Gina Adamavich is very involved in the home farm and has taken on much of the mating decisions. Gina works part-time for UPS and has two children – Bailey, age 16, and Briana, age 14, that help on the farm when they can. Briana enjoys showing more than her brother, who has his eyes on tractors and fishing. Glenn’s second daughter, Jaime McCoy, is the family’s fitter at shows and tries to remain as involved in the home operation as possible. With a desire to do well in the show ring, the Ubbelohdes breed first for strength, udders and longevity. These priorities are proof of Linjet’s success in the Spruce Lawn herd, and the reason he is one of their favorite bulls of the past. Champion 8–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/November 2014
was another sire that worked well, in addition to a much earlier sire, Citamatt. The consistency of the breeding program is visible in every age of animal on the farm. The Ubbelohdes philosophy of strong pedigrees is evident throughout, and is implemented whether breeding their own stock or making a puchase in a sale. Young cows in the barn are sired by Sanchez, Gold Chip, Destry, Sid, and Braxton. Heifers are highlighted by fancy Brokaw, Golden Dreams, Golddust, and Sanchez calves. The Ubbelohdes are using Golden Dreams, Golddust, O’Kaliber, Brokaw, Clark, and Numero Uno for service sires. With pedigrees stacked in type, the Spruce Lawn herd boasts a BAA of 109.5, with 20 EX, 28 VG and 17 GP cows, with none lower. The Ubbelohdes have taken to IVF technology rather than creating ET calves, largely because they can reduce the amount of bull calves born. They utilize the Trans-Ova satellite facility at Siemers Holsteins. Matriarchs set the Stage One of the highlight members of the Spruce Lawn show string in 2008 and 2009 was Maldwyn Trixie Linjet, EX-95 3E 96-MS. Trixie is still roaming the pasture at 13 years of age. She was purchased at the Tom Ware dispersal in July of 2003 as a bred heifer. She has an IVF calf coming by Golden Dreams, has four additional daughters by Goldwyn, and a recently fresh Destry daughter. Trixie’s Roy daughter is EX-93 and had a record at 4-07 2x 365d of 33,674M with 4.7% 1583F. Her only fresh Goldwyn daughter is EX-92 and had a record at 3-03 of 24,791M with 4.2% 1068F. Trixie was Reserve All-Wisconsin 125,000 lb. cow and Reserve Senior Champion of the Mid-East Summer National Show in 2009, and she was Nominated All-American in 2008 and 2009. She was also the Nasco International Type and Production Award winner at

World Dairy Expo in 2009. Trixie’s most recent show credits were in 2011, when she captured Grand Champion and Best Udder at the District 10 Holstein Show in 2011. Her lifetime credits include 222,083 pounds milk, with 4.6% 10,145F and 3.3% 7,243P. At eight years of age she finished her 7-11 record with over 35,000 pounds milk and a 5.1% fat test. Glennlawn Champion Envy, EX-93, is from an EX Encore the Ubbelohdes purchased and then an EX-95 2E Skychief, Kennydale Emily. Envy had a 3-08 record at 2x and 365d of 38,128M with 3.8% 1406F. Her EX-92 Sanchez daughter won the 2013 Sheboygan County Holstein Futurity, and will have IVF done to Doorman. Champion Envy is recently fresh herself. She has a Sid two-year-old and two young Goldsun ET calves on the farm. The Ubbelohdes purchased Rob-Cri Stormatic Manitoba, EX-94, just two months after she won the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity in 2012. They were drawn to her as a show cow – she was good enough to win the show and Stormatic is another favorite sire of Glenn’s. Of course, the family was also drawn to her depth of pedigree and her EX-90 dam by Skybuck. Manitoba has IVF pregnancies on the way by Golden Dreams. Her 4-03 record at 2x and 365 days produced 32,152M with 3.4% 1113F. Finally, matriarch of the “P” family, Winterose Gibson Phoebe, EX-93, was purchased in the last Pinehurst sale as a two-year-old. While she is no longer in the herd, her Sanchez daughters are EX-92, VG-88, VG-87 and VG-85, with those in the VG category all second lactation. Phoebe also has an EX daughter by Shottle. Her Sanchez produced almost 24,000 pounds of milk as a three-year-old, and her Shottle a record of almost 28,000 pounds milk. Phoebe had a 5-09 record of 29,708 pounds milk with 4.6% 1365F. Whether breeding cows or bringing new ones into the herd, strength of pedigree and high type will always remain priorities for Glenn. Their most recent purchases include a ninth generation EX Roxy from the Janestead Dispersal, a Brokaw heifer from the RedFest sale, and a VG-86 first score Fever daughter from the Ashlyns, also from the RedfFest sale. Crops and Management The Ubbelohdes run a total of 710 acres, both owned and rented. They grow corn, soybeans, hay and some wheat. All equipment is owned by the family, with the exception of the combine. The Ubbelohdes utilize an upright silo for their high moisture corn, and do not feed a TMR – rather, they focus on a ration with corn silage, dry hay, haylage, protein, and roasted soybeans. Manure on the farm is hauled daily. All heifer calves are raised on the farm, and all bull calves are sold within a few days after birth. On the average day, the Ubbelohdes will have 8-10 young calves at a time. Calves are fed a standard milk replacer and weaned by two and a half months. Target age for calving is 2-00. Despite the Ubbelohde’s close proximity to larger cities, they have managed to dodge most of the urban sprawl. What the Future Will Hold Glenn and Linda have been in the business a long time, and are looking forward to the day they are both retired. Linda spent 26 years in the Plymouth veterinarian office, and has been retired almost two years. Glenn is unsure of his plans for the farm, and whether a dispersal or ownership change will be the next step. While it looks like he is leaning toward a dispersal, Gina is hoping to at least downsize to 30 head. Gina is committed to the farm but wants a number of cows that is manageable while maintaining her position at UPS. No matter the direction the family of Spruce Lawn takes, one thing is for sure – they have built a tremendous herd of cows that can be utilized by the next generation or in any other dairyman’s barn.

feel is deserving. Also November 15 is the deadline for any college student wanting to apply for the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s internship for next summer. The Wisconsin Futures Sale is already in the planning stage and selections have begun. If you have a potential candidate, please contact one of the selection committee members. 2014 World Dairy Expo Champions Siemers Defnt Great-Red-ET – Siemers Holsteins
This year’s show season has brought several trips into the champion ring for Siemers Holsteins, especially in the Red and White Holstein heifer shows, with Siemers Defnt Great-Red-ET. She the first winter calf and Junior Champion of the International Red and White Show at World Dairy Expo, and earlier this year she excelled in the black and white show as well, earning Junior Champion honors at the Wisconsin Championship Show in July. That same week she was first winter calf and Reserve Junior Champion at the State Red and White Holstein Show, and Junior Champion of the Junior Show at the State Red Show. Great has been dominating every show she’s been exhibited at in 2014. Aside from her success at the WI Championship Show and World Dairy Expo, she earned Junior Champion honors at the WI Junior State Fair, which included being tapped as the Calf Champion in the black and white show. Great is a Defiant daughter of Benrise Royce Gretchen, EX-93, the High Honorable Mention All-American Red and White Junior Three-Year-Old in 2012. Gretchen was fourth place four-year-old cow at the 2013 Midwest Spring National, and her record (Can.) at 2-01 2x and 291 days included 18,864M with 3.7 694F and 3.3 614P lbs. The Siemers purchased Gretchen at World Dairy Expo in 2012 from Jeff Stephens, a trusted advisor to the family. Gretchen was tied in the Siemers string, was third in the Junior Three-Year-Old class, and just fresh with an amazing udder. The Siemers’ mating of Defiant on Gretchen was a logical one to open up the frame and widen the rump, in addition to his being bred to make the ‘show’ kind. The Siemers family plans to show Great at Louisville in the Black and White show, and do a few IVF procedures on her this winter. They hope to have her ready to roll for the 2015 show season. Crystal, Jordan, Josh, Jake, Connor and Lauren all contribute to the Siemers’ show team. Siemers Holsteins is home to over 5,000 Registered Holsteins and the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of the Siemers family. The rolling herd average is 34,564M 4.02% 1390F 3.04% 1050P. The herd currently boasts over 110 Excellent cows and almost 130 Very Good two-year-olds. The Siemers also run over 5000 acres, and recently built a new purebred center that can care for up to 20 lactating cows and about a dozen dry donors. The Siemers family works passionately on feeding, developing and marketing individuals housed here to their every advantage.
Blondin Redman Seisme-Red-ETS - MilkSource Genetics
To say this year has been a special one for Seisme and the crew at Milksource would be an understatement. This EX-97 Redman from the popular Supra family in Canada recently became the first ever Red and White Holstein female to reach 97 points (99-MS), and only the 30th alltime to achieve this pinnacle in the Holstein breed. With such an outstanding credit to her name, her success at World Dairy Expo’s International Red and White Holstein Show is only icing on the cake. Seisme went head to head in the 14–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/November 2014
125,000 lb. cow class with Apple, and came out on top at this year’s red show at World Dairy Expo. She went on to be named the Reserve Senior Champion and Honorable Mention Grand Champion at the show. Seisme’s 2014 winnings at the big show are added to a list that started as a young cow. In 2013, she was named International Red and White Cow of the Year by Holstein International - one of the most prestigious honors given to a show cow. In 2012, Seisme was Supreme Champion of the Royal Winter Fair, Unanimous All-American Aged Cow, and All-Canadian Senior Cow, and she took Grand Champion honors at the Red and White Holstein Shows at World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair. Also in 2012, Seisme was first aged cow, Senior and Grand Champion and Best Udder at the Midwest National Spring Show. She was first five-yearold, Grand Champion of the red show at the Royal, and Reserve Supreme Champion at the Royal in 2011. As a younger cow, Seisme’s credits include winning her class at both the Royal and Quebec International Show in 2008, when she was Honorable Mention All-Canadian Junior Red and White Cow. The Milksource crew acquired Seisme two years ago at the Royal Winter Fair. They were intrigued by her outstanding show record, and wanted to continue her development as a member of the Milksource show string. Seisme has daughters by Piccolo, Ladd-P, Redburst and Alchemy. Currently in her fifth lactation, her record in progress at 7-07 194 days is 23,829M with 3.8% 915F and 3.0% 709P. She will be put on an IVF program this fall. Milksource Genetics is home to 48 cows, with an additional 120 head of youngstock and 20 calves on milk. The milking facility consists of 30 tie-stalls and eight box stalls. The show cows are fed a ration of hay and grain, while the others get a TMR. Jamie Endvick is the herd manager at this facility, with an additional three full-time employees.
Strans-Jen-D Tequila-Red-ET - MilkSource Genetics
Tequila has been a significant player added to the Milksource show string just two weeks before World Dairy Expo at the Minnesota State Fair. Tequila, an EX-91 (93-MS) Director daughter of Jen-D Devil Tiffany-Red-ET, EX-95, was named Supreme Champion of the 2014 Midwest Fall National Show. Tequila accomplished this feat just three years after her dam did the same, making red and white show history. She went on to be named Grand Champion of the International Red and White Holstein Show at this year’s World Dairy Expo. No stranger to the show ring, Tequila has been on the tanbark since she was a fall calf, under the ownership of breeders Stranshome Holsteins and Jennifer Dingbaum-Varo. In 2011, she was fourth at the Minnesota State Fair Red & White Holstein Show and a member of the Reserve All-American Junior Best Three Females. As a fall yearling, she won the class and was Junior Champion at the Minnesota State Red and White Holstein Show, as well as third in class at the Grand International Show at World Dairy Expo. She was Nominated All-American as a fall yearling in 2012, in addition to taking Reserve All-American Dam
& Daughter honors with Tiffany. Her two-year-old credits are even more impressive, as she was first senior two-year-old, Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion of the Minnesota State Red and White Show in 2013. She was second in class at Madison last year, and second at the Midwest Fall National black and white show. Her 2013 year was culminated with Reserve All-American Red & White Senior Two-Year-Old honors, and she was a member of the Reserve AllAmerican Red and White Produce of Dam and Daughter & Dam duos. At this year’s International Red and White Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo, Tequila was first senior three-year-old, Intermediate and Grand Champion of the show. This phenomenal young cow continues to grow and follow in her mother’s footsteps, making history along the way. Her second lactation record in progress at 3-09 and 70 days in milk includes 6,580 pounds milk with 257 pounds fat and 181 pounds protein. Tequila is short bred but will be put on an IVF program once confirmed pregnant.
Milksource Durham Giggle – Chloe Vosters
Another senior threeyear-old that has had success in the Milksource show string this year is Milksource Durham Giggle, EX-91. This young Durham, exhibited by Chloe Vosters, had a successful early start to her show season when she was named Reserve Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion of both the Junior and Open Show at the District 7 Holstein Show. The competition only got better through the summer and into the fall, and Giggle was successful the entire way. Giggle was named Intermediate Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo after she won her class for Chloe. Her other show credits include Grand and Supreme Champion honors at the largest junior dairy show in the world – the Wisconsin Junior State Fair. Bred back and due in the spring for another round on the tanbark, Giggle’s second lactation record in progress at 3-03 and 155 days includes 16,587M 3.0% 500F and 3.0% 493P. Giggle was bred by Milksource, and her dam is the prestigious EX-95 2E Cherry Crest Lyster Golden, nominated All-American and All-Canadian five-year-old in 2009.
Laixtpert Extra Goldwyn – Noah Bilz
This past spring, Noah Bilz and his stepfather Marcus went to the Milksource Genetics Tag Sale in search of the perfect show heifer. He found just that and picked out another animal that day, a dry cow that proved to be a wise investment. Laitxpert Extra Goldwyn, VG-87, freshened on June 18, the day of the District 4 Show, so Noah’s first venture into the showring with Extra was at the Wisconsin Championship Show. She stood ninth overall and was the fourth junior in the Senior 3-year-old class. The pair went on to the Wisconsin Valley Fair in Wausau where Extra was Reserve Grand Champion, then Supreme Champion of the Junior Show at the Athens Fair and Intermediate Champion at the Central Wisconsin State Fair in Marshfield. Finally, the year was topped off by winning the Reserve Intermediate Champion banner at the International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo. Extra is a Braedale Goldwyn from a Tempnorth Damien Tiffy, VG-85 2Y Can, and then Tem-North Leduc Taffy, VG-85 Can. She
produced a 2-01 record in 355 days of 27,740 3.6% 1008F 3.0% 835P. Following the junior show at World Dairy Expo, Noah sold Extra to Ferme Jacobs and Blondin. Noah’s spring yearling, Milksource Laurin Beth-ET, was ninth in the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo and he was also champion of the junior division of the showmanship contest. Noah’s family milks 450 cows on DeJong Family Dairy in Dorchester, Wisconsin, with about half of the herd being Registered Holsteins. There is an area of the special needs barn that Noah has completely redone for the show animals. He has a lot of passion and love for the farm and his animals and will be developing his own herd under the “Dolla-Bilz” prefix. He currently owns three heifers and three cows by himself and one heifer with his sisters. Noah really made the extra effort with Extra after she freshened in June, milking her by himself twice a day, walking her daily and maintaining her feed in order to get her ready for the shows. Noah is in the eighth grade at Colby Middle School where he is on the honor roll. He belongs to the FFA and the Marathon County Junior Holstein Association.
Ms Absolute Glory-Red – McKenna & Coltin Coffeen & Breya Pollack
What had already been a banner year, was topped off with a Junior Champion banner for McKenna and Coltin Coffeen and Breya Pollack and their fall calf, Ms Absolute Glory-Red. Glory-Red made her debut at the District 7 Holstein Show where she took home junior champion honors of both the junior and open shows. She went on to be All-Wisconsin Red & White Fall Calf, Reserve Junior champion of the Junior Show and Honorable Mention of the open show at the Wisconsin Red & White State Show. Shortly after, Glory swept the National Red & White Convention, being named Junior Champion of both the junior and open shows, only to be followed up with another Junior Champion title at the Brown County Fair. Glory-Red is backed by a line of Excellent dams that go back to Jimdandy RS Glamor Shot-Red. Glamor Shot was bred by Jim and Diane Coffeen of Chilton and had her own “glory” day as the Supreme Champion of the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo in 2002. After the herd was dispersed in 2005, their son Kevin retained ownership of this foundation cow and housed her at the farm of his good friend Ben Pollack of Van Dyne. Ben became a partner in some of Glamor Shot’s resulting offspring. Her Redliner daughter produced Glory’s dam, a Rubens granddaughter. Glamor Shot had incredible depth and an admirable frame, which she has passed onto her offspring. With each breeding, the goal has been to continue refining dairy character. These breeding objectives culminated in Glory, a well-balanced heifer with height, style and femininity. When she was born at the Pollack Dairy, Ben and Kevin knew right away that she could be something special. Soon after, she was moved to Kevin and Peggy Coffeen’s show barn in De Pere for individualized care. The partners plan to continue growing and developing Glory for another show season in 2015 and look forward to a promising future for her as a cow. They are also considering flushing her in order to continue her bloodline and explore merchandising opportunities. heifer farm along with other offspring from Glamor Shot and a few black and white Holsteins. Her dam is a member of the herd at Pollack Dairy, a 400-cow farm owned by Ben and Kristin Pollack and Ben’s parents, John and Lynn Pollack. Glory is owned by Kevin’s children, McKenna and Coltin, and Ben’s daughter, Breya. McKenna is a sophomore at West De Pere High School, and Coltin is a seventh grader at West De Pere Middle School. Breya is a first-grader at the Friendship Learning Center in North Fond du Lac.
Krull Larson Dirty Girl-Red – Cassy, Bryce & Carley Krull
It’s a rare junior project that can win a champion banner on the colored shavings as a heifer and return for another as a fresh cow. The partnership of Cassy, Bryce and Carley Krull have developed just such a project. Krull Larson Dirty Girl-Red freshened in March with a bull calf and is currently being flushed. She had a successful heifer campaign as a Winter Yearling in 2013 that was highlighted by being named Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show at the International Red & White Show at World Dairy Expo and Unanimous Junior All-American, and the Krulls were excited for Dirty Girl to get back in the showring. Dirty Girl was the second place junior Senior 2-year-old at the Midwest Spring Red & White Show and the Wisconsin Red & White Championship Show. She was second and second junior at the National Convention Red & White show and first at the Wisconsin State Fair open show. Dirty Girl peaked at the International Holstein Show, placing fourth in the open show and first junior, first bred and owned and first junior bred and owned. Later that day, she was tapped as Intermediate Champion and then Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Dirty Girl is the product of a purchase the Krull kids made at a National Convention Sale. Dirty Girl’s dam, Hauve Advent DreamyRed-ET, was their selection after purchasing a first choice from Tyrone Johnson. Dreamy completes five generations of Excellent dams back to Dellia herself. Dreamy, EX-93, has a tremendous show record herself, highlighted by being named Reserve Junior All-American Junior 2 Year Old (B&Ws) and Nominated All-American Red & White Junior 2 Year Old. Her Debonair daughter, Dreamgirl-Red, was Reserve Junior Champion of the Red & White Junior Show at NAILE in 2010 and her black and white Mr Burns daughter, Dream Big, was 1st Winter Calf and Reserve Junior Champion at the NAILE open show in 2011. Cassy is currently a junior at UW-Platteville, Bryce is a sophomore at UW-River Falls and Carley is a junior at Lake Mills High School. All three are active in the Wisconsin and Jefferson County Junior Holstein Associations.
Milksource Adv Lilac-Red-ET - Jenna Langer
Jenna Langer and Langer Dairy Farms are always looking to add strong maternal lines to their herd. A purchase from last spring turned out to be the right choice as she was named Senior Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the International Red and White Show. Langers purchased Milksource Adv Lilac-Red-ET at the 2014 Milksource Tag Sale with the purpose of adding her maternal line to their herd. Lilac is an Advent from Wilstar-RS Tlt Limited-Red, EX-94 2E, a showring favorite of Milksource Genetics. Limited was Reserve Grand Champion at the 2011 International Red and White Show and Honorable Mention Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair that same year. She was Reserve All-Canadian and Reserve All-American Red and White for 2011. Behind Limited are an EX-91 Kite, an EX-91 Rubens and seven more VG or EX dams from the family of Tora Triple Threat Lulu, EX-96 GMD DOM. Lilac was scored VG-87 VG-MS as a three-year-old and will be re-scored at the end of October. She freshened in July and made her showring debut for this year on the colored shavings, however she was nominated Junior All-American Summer Yearling in 2011 for Milksource. Lilac had a 3-00 record in 292 days of 26,240 3.9% 1034F 3.3% 872P. Langers plan to get Lilac bred back for next year and she will then enter their IVF program. Langer Farms consists of 400 cows milked at two dairy operations, 70 on one and 330 on the second, and 3100 acres of cropland. The entire family is involved in all of the day to day activities of the entire operation. Greetings Friends, As mine and Kayla’s year slows down, we have begun to realize how truly great it has been to sit ringside at all the shows we have attended. We wrapped up our “ribbon duties” in October at World Dairy Expo. It was an honor to serve as ambassadors for the Holstein breed. A huge “Congratulations” to those of you who showed in both the Junior and Open shows. It is always wonderful to see Wisconsin well represented. We also both enjoyed the opportunity to see and network with many of our Wisconsin Holstein members throughout the week. It seems like forever, but remember, WDE 2015 is only ten months away! Although this time of year is busy with school and harvest, it’s important to remember that the second round of due dates for Junior awards & entry forms are coming up. These award forms include: WHY Friend Recognition, Long Range Production, Junior Progressive Breeder, Essay Contest, Junior Farm Tour, Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, and Prepared Public Speaking. These are great opportunities to grow as a person, and gain knowledge of our industry. Another truly great opportunity that Kayla and I both have personal experience with is the Royalty program. Applications are
now being accepted for Wisconsin Holstein Royalty 2015. It is a truly awesome experience to apply. The Royalty application along with the other forms can all be found at www.wisholsteins.com and are due November 15th. Kayla and I are excited to meet the applicants and wish the best of luck to all. Not only do Juniors have the opportunity to be recognized, but adults do as well. Forms for Distinguished Dairy Breeder and Distinguished Young Dairy Breeder are due November 8th. In addition, the form for the Young Adult Education Awards is due November 15th. Both forms can be found online. It is very exciting to think that Junior Convention is right around the corner! Many Junior members across the state are anxious to attend the Wisconsin Holstein Convention, “Out of This League in 2015!” Convention this year is being held January 2nd-4th in Fond du Lac, WI. I know many teams are busy practicing dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy already. For many, convention is a time to not only compete, but reunite with friends from across the state. Kayla and I look forward to re-connecting with juniors we have met throughout the year at various events. I’m sure Dodge County is busy planning for and will do a great job hosting this event! Lastly, just a reminder that Junior Raffle tickets are still on sale all the way up until Convention. Tickets can be purchased from a JAC, as well as each county received some to sell. The Calumet County Holstein Breeders began the New Year with our annual meeting being held in January. Larry Nelson, Wisconsin Holstein Association Executive Director and Chris Lyons, National Holstein Association representative were our guest speakers in 2014. For the first time in several years Calumet County Junior Holstein Association members attended the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association Convention. A goal has been made to get our juniors more involved in Calumet County and Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association activities. The Calumet County Rural/Urban Mardi-Gras is always held the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. The Holstein Breeders are the main sponsor. In 2014, over one hundred twenty-five people were in attendance to honor the winners of many awards including the naming of the County Holstein Boy and Girl. Our 2014 Award winners were Grant Maurer and Mariah Tasch who both reside in rural Chilton. Gordie Gasch from Brillion was named the Calumet County Holstein Breeders Friend of the Farmer. A live auction is held at the Mardi-Gras with a portion of the proceeds given to our Calumet County Fair for improvements and other awards. The annual June Dairy Month “Sundae on the Farm” promotion was held on June 29 at Grand View Dairy Farms in Brillion. Members volunteer at the event. The Holstein Breeders are one of the main sponsors. Members exhibited at District Show, the Wisconsin State Holstein Show and World Dairy Expo. In August, we provide the transportation of the animals representing Calumet County at the Wisconsin Junior State Fair. The Calumet County Fair is held Labor Day weekend. The Holstein Breeders coordinate the trophy sponsors for dairy classes and provide financial assistance. A pizza party is sponsored by the Calumet County Holstein Breeders for all the dairy exhibitors and their families on the Sunday night of County Fair. In 2015, our first Calumet County Holstein Futurity will be held on Sunday evening, September 6 at 7:30 p.m. A social will be held immediately following the announcement of the Futurity winner. In 2014, the Calumet County Holstein Breeders made over four thousand dollars in donations to dairy related activities on the county and state level.

The adult association had a great year. Earlier this spring a small group enjoyed the District 10 tour with neighboring counties to Luck-E, Team Holsteins and Golden Oaks where they saw some very impressive groups of cows. In June Sheboygan County hosted the District 10 show which had 175 head! The 15th annual Futurity was held over Labor Day weekend. As always a large crowd was on hand as Matt Engel served as judge and placed our largest group yet of 32 head. Top 5 entries were as follow: 1st - Mauk-E-Way Destry Aubrey-ET, Mauk-E-Way Farms; 2nd Lyn-Vale Reality Muriel-Red, William Schultz; 3rd - Lyn-Vale Destry Patsy, William Schultz; 4th - Milksource Contender Lynn-Red-ET, Booth Haven Holsteins; 5th - Lyn-Vale Picolo Maiden, William Schultz. To end the year, the annual meeting will be on December 3, 2014 and start planning for 2015! The Sheboygan County Junior Holstein Association had a very fun and successful year! To highlight and begin the year, we had over 20 members attend the 2014 Junior Holstein Convention held by hosts, Fond du Lac juniors. Some of the highlights included: three 12 and under younger member award winners, 1st place Display Board, 2nd County Scrapbook, 2nd and 3rd place juniors in the speaking contest, a 1st, 3rd and People’s Choice award in the advertising contest, three photo award winners, two rookie dairy bowl teams, two junior dairy teams and one senior dairy bowl team, and several participants in dairy jeopardy. A great time was had by all! In June, the Sheboygan County juniors exhibited animals in the District 10 Holstein Show which was held in Plymouth. Special highlights included showmanship honors: 10 and Under: 3rd place Brady Bleck; our Junior Showmanship winners and state qualifiers: 1st Elise Bleck, 2nd Jared Abraham and 3rd Savanna Ridge; Senior Division: 1st Cole Booth, 2nd James Jens and 3rd Kelly Jens. At the Wisconsin State Championship Show the Sheboygan County Junior Dairy Judging team placed 1st and included: Elise Bleck, Ava Booth, Ella Bindl and Savanna Ridge. In addition, four of the juniors placed in the top ten: Elise Booth, Cole Booth, Ava Booth, and Campbell Booth. In addition, this past July a couple of our youth and their families attended the National Holstein Convention in Dubuque, Iowa. Elise Bleck placed 1st in the National Junior Artistic Folding Display Board Contest and both Elise Bleck and Cole Booth qualified to compete in the National Junior Speech Competition. In closing, several Sheboygan County juniors advanced to the final rounds of the Showmanship Divisions at World Dairy Expo with James Jens placing 7th Senior, Ava Booth 2nd Junior and Jared Abraham 6th Junior overall. The Sheboygan County Juniors are thankful for all the support they received this past year from mentoring adults and businesses.

WHA 2015 Summer Internship Opportunity The Wisconsin Holstein Association is searching for eager Registered Holstein enthusiasts looking to learn more about the industry and wanting to gain valuable experiences that can be utilized in any industry. Applicants attending a 2 or 4 year college are welcomed to apply. It is not required to be majoring in an Agriculture field but background in the dairy industry is preferred. Major Duties & Responsibilities: Event Planning • Attend all WHA sponsored summer events and other county Holstein events. These include the WHA State Championship Show, Showmanship and Judging Contest, Junior State Fair Holstein Show, WHA Futurity and Open State Fair Holstein Show. Intern may also be asked to attend District Shows around the state when needed. • Work with WHA committees to plan events such as the 2015 WHA Futurity, State and District Shows, State Picnic and more. This may include inputing and finalizing show entries, organizing awards, volunteers and other details such as mailings and dignitary needs. • Organize show booklets, meals, send correspondence before and after an event and archive final placing results. Public Relations • Ability to communicate to all areas of the Association in a timely manner • Assist in any communication materials needed for members or external media such as pamphlets, letters, bios and entry forms • Work with external sponsors as it pertains to awards, signage and coordination of events • Build valuable partnerships with industry partners Web, Print and More • Write press releases announcing upcoming events and summarizing placings and/or winnings. • Compile and publish updated marketing materials on WHA website such as press releases, entry forms, event details and imagery. • Take photos of event winners when needed to post online and share with Editor. This will require the creation of an archive for year-end presentations. • Interview Wisconsin Holstein breeders and write profile articles as assigned by the Editor; this may require taking photos for the article. • Write articles of interest for the WI Holstein News and website as well as identify potential roundtable discussions for the News. • Opportunity to learn database management and design e-newsletter creative.

STUDENT PROFILE Name: Austin Prichard Hometown: Muskego, WI Major: Dairy Science Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I had family history at UWMadison. My father is an alumnus and received his Master’s for electrical engineering at Madison. He was very fond of the school and encouraged me to go here. I was interested in Madison’s scientific research community and the opportunities the UW provides for undergraduate research. What has been your most memorable college experience? The UW gave me a chance to work with dairy cattle for the first time in my life. My most memorable experiences are student managing Madison’s research herd in the Dairy Cattle Center, working the production side of the facility, and concurrently performing research on trial cows with the Hernandez lactation biology laboratory. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Science 305: Lactation Biology was my favorite course because I learned about how milk synthesizes in the mammary gland. Once I understood milk production, many dairy practices began to make more sense to me. I had a strong interest in lactation biology prior to taking the course. What are your future career goals? I applied to veterinary school this year and hope to work in dairy medicine. I am also interested in dairy based research. One day, I would like to have some of my own cows. WI Holstein Junior Member Agreement The Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association is open to membership for those persons under the age of 21 as of January 1st of the membership year. The purpose of this organization is to encourage youthful interest in the promotion of the Registered Holstein industry. To be eligible for membership, all juniors must sign this agreement and agree to abide by the rules hereinafter set forth. Failure to honor any of these rules will subject the junior member to immediate revocation of membership status, including the opportunity of participation in WI Holstein Association sponsored activities and events. The following rules shall apply to all members: 1. Use or possession of any alcoholic beverage or controlled substances strictly prohibited. 2. No member shall engage in any behavior prohibited by state statute, local ordinance or Board Policy (which shall include, but is not limited to vandalism, theft, truancy, assault, threats to personal safety or property and flagrant misconduct). 3. Members, at all times, shall demonstrate good citizenship and recognize the value of setting and adhering to the highest standards of conduct and performance. 4. At all Association sponsored functions, activities and trips, the rules of conduct specified by adult chaperones and advisors shall be at all times observed by members. 5. All members shall recognize the right of the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Junior Activities Committee, the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and its staff, adult advisors and chaperones to have the authority to enforce the rules as established and authorized herein. Members and/or their parents/guardian shall accept any financial responsibility for the enforcement of the provisions herein. For the purposes of the observance of the rules of membership herein, there is established a Board which shall consist of the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Holstein Association, the President of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and the Chairman of the Wisconsin Holstein
Association Junior Activities Committee. The purpose of this Board shall be to oversee the fair application of the rules of membership and afford the right of due process to all members. Due process shall be afforded by: explaining the evidence against the member, giving the member an opportunity to explain his/her version of the facts, thereafter, it is a matter of discretion by the Board whether to have the accuser/observer summoned and whether to permit cross examination of said individuals, due process must be initiated within 120 days of receipt of membership revocation. Award opportunities still available WHA Royalty
This is a position for Junior Holstein Members that are interested in becoming an ambassador for the WI Holstein Association. The WI Holstein Royalty will be asked to travel throughout the state to various events. They will make speaking and educational appearances, hand out awards at appropriate events, and be called on to give brief speeches. They will act as the Host or Hostess at WI Holstein events. Entrants must be between the ages of 16 to 20 as of January 1, 2015 to become WI Holstein Royalty. Royalty candidates will be required to interview at the WI Holstein Junior Convention. This interview takes precedence over other events at Junior Holstein Convention. They will also be required to participate in the Intermediate or Senior Speaking Contest at the WI Holstein Junior Convention. Resume and applications are due to the WHA office by Nov. 15.

Nominate an adult “friend” or leader for the Wisconsin Holstein Youth Friend of the Year Award! The Junior Holstein program has been successful because of parents and youth supporters, and this award is a great opportunity to recognize youth “friends” that have given a helping hand or gone above and beyond to aid in the development of the state’s Holstein youth. There are two divisions - 1 to 5 years of leadership and 6 years and over of leadership. Be sure to include the division that your “friend” would qualify for on the application. Stories and applications for this award should be 250 words or less and be to the state office by November 15. All applications submitted will be kept on file for three (3) years.

Ads, photos, crafts, and more! There are a ton of opportunities for recognition at junior convention in the contest room. Juniors can enter photography, arts and crafts, folding display, advertisements, scrapbooks and digital scrapbooks. Banner Contest
This year, each county is being asked to create a banner that represents the state of Wisconsin and the dairy industry. The most creative and impressive banner will move on to compete at National Convention in July 2015. Banners must be no larger than 3' X 5' and come hung on a dowel rod. The banner can be any shape or form as long as it's under this size. Banners can be any color and can be made out of paper or material. Points will be deducted from the total score if they exceed the 3' x 5' size. A complete list of rules and sign up sheet can be found on our website at www.wisholsteins.com/juniorawards.
Junior Talent Contest Entry Form The Wisconsin Holstein Association is full of talented individuals outside of the show ring that other members are not aware of. The purpose of this event is to showcase your talents to fellow members! The contest will take place on Friday night of Junior Convention. Rules: • Musical instruments and any props needed for the act must be brought by the contestant. Any equipment that is needed for the performance must be carry-on only. Music must be able to be played on a PC. • Groups will be allowed, but will be limited to two microphones. • Each contestant will be limited to a maximum of five minutes for their performance. Points will be deducted for going over the allotted time. • Judges will place the top three contestants in each division. • Performances should be appropriate for all ages. Requirements: Applicant must be a current member of the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association and not have reached their 21st birthday by January 1st of the Junior Convention year.

Wisconsin did very well again this year at World Dairy Expo. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors and especially those that found themselves in the winner’s circle. I hope you’ll enjoy reading a little bit about each of our champions starting on page 14 of this issue. I took lots and lots of photos during the shows at WDE, many of which are posted to the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Facebook page. You are welcome to use these in ads, on websites or on your personal or farm Facebook page, but please give WHA the proper photo credit when you use them. We had a great week at the WHA booth at World Dairy Expo as well. Along with handing out over 750 Breeder Calendars, 400+ September issues and 400+ October issues, all of the extra back issues from 2014 were picked up by visitors. It was great visiting with all of the members that stopped as well as the foreign visitors that have an interest in Wisconsin Holsteins. Coming up next month is our annual Youth Issue. If you have a special junior you’d like to recognize for their projects from this year, please give me a call or email by November 10. Juniors ads are eligible for a 10% discount off the page rate one time per year. Please call with any questions! Don’t forget about our annual cover contest. Entries are due November 15 and we’re looking for any photos featuring Holsteins. The winning entry will be the cover photo for our February issue. And a reminder to juniors to bring your best photos to the contest at Junior Convention as we’ll be selecting some of those to use on covers in 2015 as well. Just a reminder to get your membership renewals paid by the end of the year. WHA now has “3 Ways to Pay” - whether you want to send a check in with your renewal card, call the office to pay with a credit card or renew online with your customer ID number and the email linked to your account. If you used the online system for doing District Show entries, you can use the same log-in info. If you’re having problems with the online renewal process, please call our office to make sure we have the correct email address linked with your membership.
