Obituaries Roger Fust Roger C. Fust, 74, of the town of Easton, passed away Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at Wausau Aspirus Hospital after a courageous five-year battle with cancer. He was born March 4, 1937, the only child of the late Clarence and Dorothy (Sickler) Fust. From the time he was born, Roger had a passion for agriculture, growing up on the family farm. He was very active in D.C. Everest FFA and Badger 4-H, receiving the highest awards, The American Farmer Degree and The 4-H Key Award. He was a graduate of the second graduating class at D.C. Everest High School in 1955. He was also a member of the Wisconsin National Guard. He met his “farmer girl,” Darleen, at a polka dance at the former Colonial Ballroom. They were married June 6, 1959. He married into a large family of ten brothers- and sisters-in-law and 27 nieces and nephews who he enjoyed very much throughout the years. Roger and Darleen were blessed with two children. They farmed together for 52 years with his parents, children and grandchildren. He was very proud of receiving the Century Farm Award in 2005 and that the farm continues for five generations. Roger was a lifelong member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Wausau where he was baptized, confirmed and married. He served on various committees through the years and was past church council president. He was currently serving as an usher. Roger was frequently recognized for his contributions and service by local and state organizations such as the Farm Bureau, Wausau Area Jaycees, Marathon County Holstein Breeders, Wisconsin Agriculturist Magazine, FFA and 4-H. He had served on the board of directors of several organizations including the Marathon County Dairy Herd improvement Association, Marathon County Holstein Breeders, Cloverbelt Co-Op, Tomorrow Valley Co-Op, Marathon County Agriculture Society Fair Board, DHIA State Policy Committee, ASCS, and Marathon County Farm Bureau, where he served as president off and on for the past 16 years. He was currently serving on the Servco FS board and the town of Easton zoning committee. As a couple, through the years, they enjoyed polka dancing, square dancing, bowling, snowmobiling, attending farm-related conventions, traveling, watching the Green Bay Packers, and socializing with friends over a Friday night fish fry. Roger enjoyed machinery shopping. Every week he would go through all the farm papers looking at the equipment for sale, searching for the next item to make a deal on. He also enjoyed going on Sunday drives through the countryside looking at farm fields, having breakfast with his “coffee buddies,” and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandsons. Survivors include his wife, Darleen (Seymour); children, Brian (Wendy) Fust and Brenda (Kevin) Prieve; grandchildren, Nicole, Jennifer (Adam) Krause, Tyler (special friend, Shannon McLaughlin) and Ryan Prieve; and his adorable great-grandsons, Aiden and Bailey Krause, who brought many smiles to him in his last years. He is also survived by his
brothers- and sisters-in-law, Donald and Ruth Seymour, Maynard and Lucille Bedish, Rita Seymour, DuWayne and Joanne Schulz, and Shirley Madden; an aunt, Margaret Meseberg; many nieces, nephews and friends; and his feline companions, Jake and Jerry. He was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Norman Seymour and Earl Madden; and his beloved grandson, Bradley Fust. The family would like to thank Dr. Christopher Peterson, Dr. Joseph Babiarz, Dr. Darryl Barton and Dr. Brian Smith, and their respective nursing staffs. The family would like to further thank the Home Hospice Service, and all the nurses and CNAs on the Palliative Care Unit at Aspirus Wausau Hospital for the excellent care provided to Roger. A memorial fund will be established. Memorials may also be made to St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Wausau. Rest in peace, we love you, and we will all miss you.

From your President Corey Geiger Dear Wisconsin Holstein Association members: Wisconsin is fortunate to host World Dairy Expo. As hosts of national and international events of this nature, our industry has an incredible responsibility to ensure animal health... not only for cattle visiting the Badger State, but, perhaps more importantly, for cattle that reside in our state on a permanent basis. Some of the ways we can help protect all cattle is through stringent health monitoring headed up by Wisconsin state veterinarian, Dr. Bob Ehlenfeldt. Another vital tool is our premise and visible identification standards which are among the most comprehensive in the nation. These ID efforts are headed up by the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC). Up until this point, WLIC has been funded with federal funds primarily obtained through work by Senator Herb Kohl. With the federal budget shortfalls, WLIC’s future funding is in question, and the Wisconsin livestock industry is holding meetings to see if a long-term funding package can be developed. Make no mistake, having an industry-driven identification effort is far superior to one directed by any government agency. Some may question the need to fund ID. It is this simple - USDA’s latest identification proposal, known as Animal Disease Traceability, calls for states to source an infected animal and all animals that came into contact with it. If your state cannot fulfill that requirement, the entire state becomes quarantined. How would that impact your farm? How would sales of your Holsteins be affected? So, how does WLIC get funded moving forward? Robert Fourdraine, chief operating officer of WLIC, stopped by the September 2011 WHA board meeting to discuss that very issue. Presently, it takes about $500,000 to fund WLIC. If the Wisconsin livestock industry gets behind this issue, Fourdraine envisions a scenario where the state government initiates a 50-50 cost share with the industry and would make $250,000 in matching funds available if the industry can generate the rest of the money. One possibility is to raise $150,000 through Wisconsin-branded tag sales with an additional $100,000 coming from sponsorships. WHA board member, Marci Walker, who is our representative for WLIC, provides these additional thoughts on forming the WLIC Partnership to Protect Wisconsin: 1. What happens on your farm affects your neighbor and vice versa. Size doesn’t matter; it’s all about the management. One farm can shut down a county or region quickly. 2. A disease-infected region could shut down feed and other inputs coming into your farm and milk/cattle/embryos leaving the farm resulting in major loss of income. 3. An efficient and effective animal-tracing infrastructure is like an insurance policy. 4. Either we, as an animal ag industry, work together to tell the government what we want and are doing, or we'll face them telling how they want us to do business. 5. Canada and the European Union (EU) use industry-driven and supported systems. They aren't perfectly tight, but traceability is very efficient. 6. Horse and poultry industries don't have an easy visible way of tagging animals. Horses use microchips but will not support ear tags. Horse and poultry could, however, help sponsor partnership efforts. 7. How many animals leave your herd or facility in a year? 8. WLIC data is private and not public and would remain that way. If the government owned the data, accountability and privacy could be different. Ben Brancel, Wisconsin’s agriculture secretary, challenged all those attending the meeting to be sure that our memberships (WHA members in our case) are informed and support this issue before we go to him and say “yes” we support the plan. As you can tell, the financing part of this proposal is in its infancy. Let your WHA directors know what you think about this issue so we may take a more formal position. Speaking of ID, the official registration for many Registered Holsteins is two official ear tags. At our recent District Shows and State Show, some Holsteins did not have tags in their ears. What made this a problem was the fact there were no sketches or photos on the paper. Simply said, no 6–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/October 2011
tags, no sketches, no photos means the animal is a grade. She is not eligible for the show. If animals are registered with tags, they must be in the ear. No exceptions. National Holstein tells me the tags are quite popular these days. Just over 60 percent of all applications for registry arrive online, and nearly all of those request ear tags. Lastly, consider nominating a breeder for our two highest honors: The Younger Distinguished Breeder Award (under 40 years old) and The Distinguished Breeder Award (a lifetime achievement award for a breeder over 40 years old). Hello Holstein Devotees! Summer has wound down to an end, but that doesn’t mean show season is over. World Dairy Expo is taking place October 4-8, 2011. I am extremely excited to be able to stand ringside during the show, and I’m sure many of you are looking forward to Expo as well, whether being either a participant or observer! This past August, I attended the Wisconsin State Fair. This is where the 25th Anniversary of the WHA Futurity took place, and it was a successful one at that! Everyone, both exhibitors and cows, were dressed with style. There were twenty-one participants, but Rob-Cri Holsteins walked away proudly with their first place entry, Rob-Cri Strmtc Manitoba-ET. I would like to wish a congratulations once again to them as well as all of the other farms and families who participated! It may have been raining at the event, but that didn’t affect the crowd, as the coliseum was filled with viewers. I think this show not only provides us an opportunity to dress up and show off our cows, but it also gives non-agricultural people the opportunity to see that there is more to us than cut off shirts, dirty bib overalls, and roughed up hands! More so, recognizing the Holstein cow and being able to show her off in an atmosphere of class creates respect for the things we love. On August 27, Mother Nature was great to us, providing us beautiful weather for the Wisconsin Holstein Picnic at Scientific Holsteins. I would like to thank the Nunes family for letting us visit their farm and providing us with a great view of cows! There was an excellent turn out, a majority of people participated in the judging contest, and many of the kids were able to bob for apples, dig for agricultural treasures, and see who could eat a donut the fastest off of a string! Everyone visited with one another during the delicious meal and then awards were handed out. Overall, it was great to see many people within the industry around the state come together for a stress-free day! I’ve been staying busy attending other events as well, such as State Show, fairs, county futurities, and county/district meetings. As busy as I am being involved with my own family’s show string, as well as princess duties, I don’t look back on the day and wish for any less. Now that school has started back up I hope to visit classrooms and talk to children about agriculture as a whole, and more specifically the Holstein Industry. We may have the knowledge of agriculture, but there are many people out there who should be aware of the great things we do and provide. Don’t be afraid to take time out of your own day to promote the dairy industry, so that we as a team can make a better future for the Holstein cow! Looking forward to seeing many of you very soon! Board Member Profile: Chris McCullough Family members: Chris and his wife, Kathie, and their two children, Rachel and Mac, operate Rock-N-Hill-II Holsteins in partnership with Mike and Marcy McCullough. They are currently milking 50 cows and raise 75 head of dry cows and young stock. They have a current BBA of 111.9% with 27 homebred Excellent cows on the farm. Future Plans: The McCullough family hopes to continue breeding and developing the five to six cow families that currently make up their herd. They would also like to continue breeding high scoring, profitable cows. Bulls currently being used: Rock-N-Hill-II Holsteins is currently utilizing Atwood, Braxton, Damion, Guthrie, Sid and Phoenix in their breeding efforts. Hobbies and Interests: Besides exhibiting Rock-N-Hill-II Holsteins in the show ring, Chris also enjoys judging shows. During the winter months, Chris enjoys coaching the Juda youth wrestling team and the Juda FFA Dairy Judging teams. Why did you join the WHA Board and what do you hope to accomplish?: Chris joined the WHA Board because he felt it was a great opportunity to give back to the organization that has given so much to him and the rest of his family. Throughout his term, he hopes to learn more about how the association works and contribute in any way he can. Greatest accomplishments and memories in WHA: Chris feels his greatest accomplishments within the association are the friendships that he and his family have been able to develop and maintain. Being on the Wisconsin Holstein Board of Directors has been very rewarding by seeing how our staff and board work together for the benefit of the members and to help the organization move forward.

When discussing overall farm goals, Brian says that he and his family strive to have a productive, good financial business that sees progress from year to year. He feels increased efficiencies and better training as two keys to achieving this progress. One specific example of progress at their dairy is the recent purchase of a milk pasteurizer for waste milk. This has shown a two-fold improvement for the Paulsons, namely, a cost savings in milk replacer and healthier, more aggressive calves. Twenty-one three year old cows entered the Coliseum for the “Ties and Tails Premiere,” on Saturday, August 13. They were competing for first place at the 25th Anniversary Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Ron Heffner had the challenge and honor of placing this large class of quality Holstein cows. Topping the class was Rob-Cri Strmtc Manitoba-ET owned by Rob-Cri Holsteins of Plover, Wis. They received a $1,500 check from Badgerland Financial, major sponsor of the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Manitoba, led by Jessi Wolosek, also received recognition for Best Udder sponsored by Semex. The duo was also named Top Bred and Owned, the award sponsored by Lirr Farms of Viroqua. Taking second place honors was Milksource Genetics of Kaukauna, Wis., with Ms Goldwyn Alana-ET. Milksource received a $750 check from International Protein Sires. Gildale Advent Primrose, owned by Kayli, Kalista & Kaianne Hodorff and Nicholas Schuster of Eden, Wis., was our third place entry as well as First Place Junior. Agropur presented a check for $500 to the exhibiting group. The 1st Place Junior award was given by Angela-Davis Brown, and the corresponding cash award from the WI Junior Holstein Association. The Top Production of the Show as well as Combined Fat and Protein winner was Crescentmead TH Bernice-ET, led by Audrey La Fortune for Siemers Holsteins, Newton Wis. The second junior owned animal was Miss Rachel Ray-ET, the sixth place entry, exhibited by Anna Culbertson of Pine Island, Minn. As usual, exhibitors paraded their animals around the arena dressed in nothing less than their best. The purpose of the Futurity is to help promote the dairy industry to the general public and display the care and dedication Holstein Breeders have for their animals and the products they produce. These animals are nominated by their owners as young calves in the hopes of developing into outstanding threeyear-old cows. The cows exhibited at this year’s Futurity were entered between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008. There were originally 160 animals entered for the show. Sponsors for this year’s event include Badgerland Financial, International Protein Sires, Agropur, Brian Greenman - Rural Mutual Insurance Agent, Boehringer Ingelheim, Daluge Travel, Lirr Farms and Ma-Brown Holsteins. Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and refunds made to persons owning females that have been nominated, their share of all monied accrued after the deduction of actual expenses in the promotion of the Futurity. SALE OF ELIGIBLE ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is sold, the eligibility may be transferred to the new owner, and it shall be his responsibility to inform the Futurity Committee of the change of ownership. The seller shall inform the buyer that the animal purchased is already entered in the Futurity. To aid in this, exhibitors will receive an entry certificate for each animal after entry payment has been received. New owners will need to sign an entry form after notification of entry into Futurity. OPEN CLASS SHOWING: If the show is held at the Wisconsin State Fair, all animals shown in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity are eligible upon proper entry to be shown in the open class competition of the Holstein Show. It is the responsibility of the animal’s owner to fill out the necessary forms for open class competition. MISCELLANEOUS: Neither the Wisconsin Holstein Association nor the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity Committee is in any way responsible for the condition of the premises in which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss of persons or property. All matter pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulations and health requirements of any WI Holstein Association sponsored show along with those for the show at which the Futurity is held. DRESS CODE: Every exhibitor must have formal dress to show in the Futurity. (Minimum requirements for men include a shirt, tie and dress pants while women should wear a dress, business suit or the equivalent.) Exhibitors not meeting the minimum dress code requirement will be denied entry into the show ring. PURPOSE: To stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Officially Identified Holsteins of 87% RHA or higher. To promote the Registered Holstein breed and dairy industry to the general public with an appealing and memorable presentation. PROCEDURES: An animal is nominated by an owner. ELIGIBILITY: Any registered Holstein female that was born September 1, 2010 through August 31, 2011 is eligible for the 2014 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. FEES: Entries, along with $35 per animal, must be postmarked on or before January 1, 2012. Animals may be late entered from January 2 - April 30, 2012 for $50 per animal. Full entry fees must accompany entry form or sent within the appropriate time noted above. PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity (plus interest earned) as nomination fees, less the actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity Fund and used only for Futurity purposes. Green County Junior Holsteins Deliver First Baby of June Basket Each year, the Green County Junior Holstein Association celebrates June Dairy Month by delivering a basket of gifts and dairy treats to the family of the first baby born at the Monroe Hospital during the month of June. Junior Holstein members Amber Dammen, Rachel and Brian McCullough presented this year’s basket to lucky recipients, Matthew and Sarah Binger of Freeport, Illinois. Their daughter Synthia was born June 1 at 4:22 am at the Monroe Clinic Hospital. She joins big sister Myla, 3. Synthia weighed in at 6 lbs. 7 oz. and was 21 ½ inches long. Her dad, Matthew grew up in Stephenson County, Illinois on a dairy farm where his family milked Holstein cows. Mom, Sarah grew up on a beef farm, also in Stephenson County.

When I was choosing colleges I was looking for a well-respected university that would offer me a unique student experience and thoroughly prepare me for a future in an agriculture career. UW-Madison fit all of these criteria. Oh, and I can’t forget – it’s great to be a Badger! What has been your most memorable college experience? One of my most memorable college experiences was working for two years as a World Dairy Expo showring chair with Badger Dairy Club. BDC members do a large part of the behind the scenes work in the ring, building the show and sale arenas, maintaining them throughout the week, and taking them down. What has been your favorite course? My favorite dairy science course so far was Dairy Herd Management, a class that brings in experts from the industry to teach about a variety of topics related to dairy science such as milk quality, calf health, nutrition, financial management, housing, and other important subjects. This class gave me a variety of specific knowledge in a hands-on way through field trips and group projects. What are your future career goals? When I graduate in the spring I want to transition into a career in the dairy industry that will allow me to serve farmers on a day to day basis. Growing up on a farm, it’s easy to see that farmers are the backbone of the agriculture industry, and I would like to be part of the support team that helps them succeed. I am interested in areas such as nutrition, financial management, and sales.

Marcis-View Farms
1976
2009 Marcis-View Farms traces its origin to a farm at the western base of Rib Mountain in the city of Marathon, Wis. Charles and Donna Marcis purchased the farm in 1970, and one year later began milking with the purchase of ten grade springing heifers from a local cattle jockey. Clearing land and picking many, many rocks became their job, with the help of children Steve, Merri, Sherri, and grandparents Carl and Hilda Marcis. The number of animals soon outgrew the low amount of tillable acreage, and a bigger farm was sought out. In 1975 the couple moved to Stratford, Wis., with their family and this location is still the main farm. In 1978, the addition of Registered cattle began with the selection of some animals from the Beckman brother’s herd in Merrill. With the help of purchases of animals from dispersals and sales, natural growth, and the opening of the Holstein USA herdbook, the herd has been completely Registered for almost twenty years. After graduating from UW-River Falls in 1988, and working at the UW-Marshfield Agricultural Research Station for four and a half years, Steve married Sarah in 1992 and one year later purchased the farm from Charles and Donna. In 1998, research of parlors took place with the intention of milking in a minimal-sized parlor to ease the physical stress of milking, yet still continuing to be a family farm. But with the untimely death of Steve’s mother Donna in February of 1999, priorities were realigned and the “expansion” did not take place. Although a second farm five miles away was purchased in 2003, where Charles and wife Eleanore reside currently, the number of milk cows, sixty, has not fluctuated since the mid-1980’s. Today, Steve and Sarah, plus their five children - Andrew, 17, Alayne, 14, Audree, 13, Annica, 10, and Angela, 6 - along with help from Charles and Sarah’s parents, Lloyd and Mary Schultz, operate the farms consisting of sixty cows and 300 tillable acres. Crops grown include alfalfa, corn, and soybeans. In most years, some of the crops provided a nice buffer as cash crops. After getting a couple of bulls into stud, the breeding philosophy remains the same at Marcis-View: high production out of cows that are easy to milk, and a simple concentration on longevity. With all the genomic talk and index breeding, we still breed for type and get the numbers WE like. Our June 2011 classification gave us our very first BAA, which now stands at 102.7%. Our low cull rate of 22% has enabled us to fill our new freestall barn in less than a year. Now that’s our definition of productive life! We are excited about the next phase in our expansion plan, which includes a new milking facility featuring a Double 8 Bou-Matic herringbone parlor. We hope to be settled in by November and look forward to hanging up our milking stools! The future looks very bright at Goers Family Dairy!

Thank you! Summer has coming to an end and so has this internship. It has been a great summer filled with all sorts of adventures. My summer started out with cow camp - this was quite possibly my favorite event of the summer. It was a great chance for the campers to make new friends and learn about our industry. My next events were the District Shows. These events taught me to be organized and to roll with the punches. I definitely developed my sense of direction when traveling to these shows; my first three shows took me from Luxemburg to Ellsworth and then back to Manitowoc. It was such a huge honor to see so many amazing cows throughout the state. My next event was State Show where I learned all about ultrasounding udders. It is something that I will definitely be sharing with my students this fall. Finally, the time came for State Fair and the Futurity. It was the 25th Anniversary of the Futurity and we had a great turnout of twenty-one outstanding Holsteins. It was great to see all of my planning finally come together in this event. This summer has flown by and now it is time for me to start thinking about lesson plans and student teaching. It has been a great summer and I enjoyed working with each and every one of you. Wisconsin Holstein to offer Educational Awards for Young Adults The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s (WHA) Young Adult Committee will be offering monetary awards for young adults to attend educational events in 2012. 2011 WHA State Picnic hosted by Scientific Holsteins The Matt and Mandy Nunes family of Scientific Holsteins, Chippewa Falls, hosted the 2011 WHA State Picnic on a beautiful day, Saturday, August 27. Matt and Mandy, along with daughters Katrina, Julia, and Geneva (oldest daughter Alexa was away at college at USC) put on a great event for WHA members and had a beautiful barn full of cows to show off to visitors. Along with a judging contest and other games, everyone enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch. Thank you to the Nunes Family for all their work to host such a great event. Peter Coyne served as official for the judging contest. Taking honors in the junior division, ages 15 & under were JJ McClelland, Eric Huth and Collin Wille. First in the junior division, ages 16 & over, was Benoit Versluys followed by Logan Guthenberger and Trent Seidel. Winning the ladies division was Nicole Honadel, followed by Erica Ullom and Katie Karow. Taking home bragging rights in the men’s division was John Reinkey, Wayne Omtvedt and Matt Buescher.
WISCONSIN HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION Summer Internship The Wisconsin Holstein Association is now accepting resumes for a summer internship. The internship will run from May 29, 2012 through August 15, 2012. There will be extensive travel to all parts of the state for the various WHA events and applicants will need their own vehicle. The summer intern will be reimbursed for mileage and other expenses. This internship will include office work, public relations, fund raising and service to the WI Holstein members through attendance and working at various events around the state.

It was a small group, but a great time was had golfing on a beautiful course and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Taking home 1st place and the coveted red vests was, fittingly, Team Debutante - Nicole Honadel, Cade Stanek and Donald Honadel. 2nd place went to Team Blackrose - Kathleen O'Keefe, Mike Tassoul & Marci Walker. Individual hole prize winners were Jen Wackershauser, Donald Honadel, Laura Wackershauser, Todd Stanek, Marci Walker, Kevin Jorgensen, Ashley Yager & Gary Swain. Educational Opportunities: • WHA Futurity - The WHA intern will work with the Futurity committee to plan the 2012 WHA Futurity. This will include finalizing entries, organizing volunteers and other details for the Futurity including judge’s needs, mailing of dignitary letters and information and exhibitor letters. The intern will also organize the show booklet and meal, send all closing letters and correspondence after the show, compile a final listing of the placings and awards, and write an article in summary of the WHA Futurity and winnings. • District Shows - The WHA intern will be expected to attend assigned shows, take necessary items, keep and bring back a marked book, take photos of winners for the website and WI Holstein News, and take in entries for WHA Championship Show. • Breeder Profiles as assigned by the WI Holstein News Editor Interview breeders and take photos to go with articles; write assigned articles, as well as articles of interest, for the WI Holstein News as assigned by Editor. • Attend all WHA sponsored summer events and other county Holstein events. These include the WHA State Championship Show, Junior State Fair Holstein Show and Showmanship Contest, and Open State Fair Holstein show. Intern may also be asked to attend county twilight meetings to represent WI Holstein, where they will set up a small booth and photograph interesting events. Intern may also be asked to work at the WHA booth during World Dairy Expo. • WHA office experiences include but are not limited to, website updating, telephone etiquette, Microsoft Office programs on PC and Mac, fax and copier work.

Dairy Bowl 2011 Dairy Bowl Deadlines The Dairy Bowl contest will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. Finals will be held on Friday, December 30, 2011. The deadline to enter a team for the 2011 Dairy Bowl Contest will be NOVEMBER 15, 2011. Entries must be IN OFFICE by this date or entry fees will double. The fee to enter teams will remain $10 for the Rookie division and $30 for Junior and Senior divisions. Remember, FEES WILL DOUBLE if the entry form is not IN OFFICE by November 15. NEW - All potential team member names must be submitted by the November 15 deadline. Please remember, official teams do not need to be named until registration at the 2012 Junior Convention. This includes all possible team memebers and there is no limit to the number of juniors that can be included on the list. Names must be included with the entry form to make a completed entry. Counties that will have juniors wishing to participate on a Wisconsin team must submit their $5.00 entry fee by November 15. Welcome to another jam-packed Midwest Holsteins issue! Along with some terrific ads from breeders all over the upper Midwest, we’ve got all the State Fair and Futurity show results from this past August. This is a great issue to hand out at our booth at World Dairy Expo because it showcases some of the great things happening with Wisconsin Holsteins. Included in this issue is the entry form for the 2014 Futurity. Entries for $35 are due January 1, but if you miss that deadline late entries will be accepted until April 30, 2012 at $50 per entry. This year’s Futurity was the 25th Anniversary show and it was truly a special event - with several past dignitaries joining us in West Allis and 21 fantastic 3-Year-Old cows parading through the show ring. You can read all about it starting on page 10. The entry deadline for our Cover Contest is approaching. If you have a “Family” photo you’d like to submit, please mail me a high quality print (5x7 or larger) or email a 300 dpi or higher version to lauraw@wisholsteins.com. The “Family” theme can apply to your favorite cow family, your favorite farm family or a combination of both! Please give me a call or email with any questions. Our November issue will be our AI issue and this year we will be featuring International Protein Sires.
