Obituaries Oscar Wegmann
Oscar J. “Bud” Wegmann, age 88, of Bloomington, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Madison. He was born on October 18, 1924, on the W egmann family farm in Bloomington Township, the son of Henry and Emma (Osterhaus) Wegmann. Henry and Emma were part of a group of forty families who came from the Dyersville, IA, area to settle on farms in the Bloomington area in the early 1900’s. Bud served his country in the United States Army from 1945-1947 stationed in Germany and Austria. On October 6, 1951, he was united in marriage to Coletta C. Wiest at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville. Together they farmed on the Wegmann family farm where Oscar has lived his entire life. He was a dedicated farmer and had an avid interest in Registered Holstein cattle. Bud developed his herd with the prefix “Blake’s Prairie” and shared this interest with many friends in the Holstein Association. Oscar enjoyed showing his cattle at fairs and other dairy shows when his children were members of the Blake’s Prairie Bombers 4-H Club. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington. Survivors include his wife, Coletta; children: Angela (John) Krogman; Martina (Patrick Huffman) Kief; Beth Wegmann; Mark (Mary) Wegmann; Patricia (Paul Sena) Wegmann; five grandchildren: Ken (fiancé Amber Rowe) Krogman; Steve Krogman; Emily, Michael, and Madison Wegmann; brother, Joe (Elizabeth) Wegmann; sister, Norma (Jerry) White; and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Oscar was preceded in death by his siblings: Marie (Ray) Errthum; Sr. St. Thomas OSF; Frances (Leonard) Schauff; Sr. Clare OSF; his mother and father-in-law, Vincent and Rose Wiest.
Verna Ohm
Verna F. Ohm, age 87, of Auburndale, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the House of the Dove in Marshfield. Verna was born July 26, 1926 to Christ and Anna (Kurtz) Wellhoefer in the town of Day, Marathon County. She graduated from Stratford High School in 1943. On June 5, 1954, Verna Wellhoefer was united in marriage to Harvey Ohm in Rozellville. Verna was a hardworking farm wife who also worked as a teller at Stratford State Bank for over 10 years. Ohms Registered Holsteins was the host of the first twilight meeting in Wood County. Harvey and Verna worked very closely with their small herd and were active members of the Wood County Holstein Breeders for many years. She enjoyed gardening, and reading. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. Verna is lovingly survived by her husband: Harvey; daughter: Linda (Scott) Heeg; and grandchildren: Michelle and Eric Heeg. She is further survived by a brother: Walter Wellhoefer. She will truly be missed. Verna is preceded in death by her parents: Christ and Anna. Those wishing to express their sympathy are encouraged to do so in Verna’s name toward The Lutheran Hour and The House Of The Dove. Patricia Bangart
Patricia J. “Pat” BANGART, age 64, of Greenwood, died on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at Ministry Saint Joseph’s Hospital, in Marshfield, and the Lord granted her peace from her battle with cancer. Patricia Josephine Rueth was born March 13, 1949, rural Loyal, the daughter of Edward and Florence (Schmidt) Rueth. She grew up on the family farm and received her education at St. Anthony’s Catholic School, graduated from Loyal High School, and was a graduate from UW-Stevens Point with a degree in Elementary Education. She was united in marriage at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on July 24, 1971 to Donald C. Bangart. In July 2011 Patricia and Donald celebrated a very special 40th wedding anniversary. Together they enjoyed many years of farming, quiet time at the cabin, small trips, and spending time with family and friends, especially their granddaughters. They farmed and raised their four children in Auburndale for the first 33 years of their lives together. Pat was a very dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, volunteer, and genuine leader. She gave decades of service as a leader and volunteer for 4-H, FFA and FFA Alumni, Wood County Holstein Breeders, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburndale. Pat always donated time and resources to special fund raisers and youth activities. In 2004, the family moved their dairy farm (Viaduct Holsteins) to the Greenwood/Loyal area. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Loyal and always encouraged her family to be involved in community activities. Pat loved cooking and baking and shared that talent for all to enjoy. She made a special effort to participate in the Clark County Relay for Life in July 2013. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 42 years, Donald Bangart; her four children: David (Amber) of Greenwood, Mary (Michael) Ketchum of Altura, MN, and their daughters Katelyn and Kyli Ketchum, Dennis of Loyal, and Michelle “Mikki” (Darrin) Wirt of Greenwood. Patricia was the oldest of ten brothers and sisters and is survived by: Robert (Marie) Rueth, Thomas (Anne) Rueth, Ralph Rueth, Roger (Alora) Rueth all of Loyal, Susan (Michael) Gumz of Athens, Bengi (Lawrence) Quelle of Loyal, Roy (Helen) Rueth of Unity, Rose Lindekugel (Neal Mondloch) of Loyal, Kay (John) Rafferty of New Brighton, MN; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Her courage and strength has been admired by her family and friends. Her light and inspiration will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her. From the Office Hello WHA members, It has been a busy summer here at the Wisconsin Holstein Association with numerous Holstein shows, fitting clinics and picnics filling our calendars. It’s hard to believe we are already looking to 2014, but it’s true. Throughout the summer months, the WHA staff and Board of Directors have heard recommendations from our members as it pertains to shows, Championship Show in particular, and different programs the association offers. We greatly appreciate the feedback and those that are looking forward to test new waters and strengthen our current programs. An open dialogue amongst the membership is what we have been striving for and we greatly appreciate all the feedback. This summer you may have seen a new face with a Wisconsin Holstein polo. Nicole Smith did an excellent job as our summer intern. From day one, she dove in and hit the pavement running, racking up numerous miles traveling to shows and completing feature articles. More importantly, Nicole helped tell the message of our members and the events we offer by reinvigorating our blog (Wisconsin Holstein Happenings), starting a Twitter account and maintaining our Facebook page. We thank her for her efforts and wish her luck in her final semester at UW-Platteville. She has a bright future in the dairy industry ahead of her. We also welcomed back a familiar face this summer. Ashley Yager joined the Wisconsin Holstein team as our Public Relations Associate. She will serve in a part-time roll that allows her to have a work, life balance with her family and the association. I identified the need for the vacant role when I started at WHA. Having a person dedicated to telling our members’ stories and highlighting the great things we do is essential to our membership organization. Our initial goals were to strengthen our dialogue and open the lines of communication to our membership. Ashley is the perfect person to sustain and enhance this vital area of our association. She will utilize her public relations and writing skills across numerous mediums as well as try new creative things to enhance our brand as an association. Welcome back to the team, Ashley!

Make sure to check your inbox, whether an adult or junior member. Be sure to check your spam folders as an initial notice will go out the first week of October. For those of you without an email on file, expect to see the green post card in the mail the first week of October. If you don’t receive a notice one of these two ways, give Sharon a ring and let her know ASAP. Also, make sure you validate your personal information listed on your account. We depend on member notifications in order to keep our records accurate and to ensure we stay in touch with you. Our data integrity has come a long way. This will be vital as we look into potentially printing a membership directory again in 2014. A number of junior and adult award forms are due this fall. The Distinguished Breeder and Younger Dairy Person applications are due to the office by November 10 with Young Adult Education Awards due November 15. This is a great way to celebrate your accomplishments as a Wisconsin Holstein Association member, so please take a few moments to submit your application. There are many members deserving of these awards as seen in the show ring this summer! We had a number of exceptional members recognized at the national level this year and many more members that deserve this honor. Planning for 2014 has already begun at the office. Goals and objectives for 2014 were recently approved at the September board meeting, which leads us into budgeting this fall. It’s been a great year thus far enhancing programs, improving communication and recognizing outstanding individuals. A huge thank you goes out to all our sponsors, donors and hard work from the membership. Your support has made it a great year so far. Though the show season ended on a sad note losing one of our warriors on the JACs far too early, know that we will keep moving forward in his honor as he would have wanted us to. Kevin Greenfield is the herdsman at Hilltop and focuses on reproduction and mating. He has done a phenomenal job at getting cows on the dairy pregnant and mating them with desirable sires. The Greenfields’ favorite homebred family is headlined by HilltopLLC Lou 3578, EX-91 at 5-01. This cow has produced over 90,000 pounds lifetime milk, with 4.4% fat and 3.3% protein. What makes this cow truly unique is that she can be traced back to one of the best cows from Rich’s original herd, Meier-L Homerun Carie, EX-90. Lou 3578 has two VG daughters: Hilltop-LLC Shottle 4512, VG-85, and Hilltop-LLC Sanchez 4989, VG-86. Shottle 4512 had a two-year-old record of almost 34,000 pounds of milk with 3.8% 1276 fat and 3.3% 1107 protein, and is the highest CTPI animal in the Greenfields’ herd at +2061. Sanchez 4989 was part of the Hilltop show string this year, and was 12th in the Fond du Lac County Futurity. The partners at Hilltop Dairy are appreciative of the value that Registered Holsteins have brought to their operation. They look forward to continuing the use of Holstein USA programs to improve their herd with each generation.

Hello Holstein Friends! In case the change in weather, crunchy leaves, beginning of football season, the start of school, and (best of all) Expo, weren’t enough of an indication, I thought I’d bring to your attention that summer has abruptly left us here in the Badger State. And, though summer is gone, a resounding congratulations is due to each of you on your many accomplishments in the show ring from June to August. We really couldn’t have asked for a better finale to the summer show season than the Wisconsin State Fair. “The best eleven days of summer” truly wouldn’t be complete without the nation’s largest junior dairy show. I extend my most exuberant congratulations to each of the participants whether it be in the junior, open, or futurity shows. The Holstein breed couldn’t have been better represented! I would also like to extend my most heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to the Siemers family for hosting the State Holstein Picnic. Your facilities are immaculate, your cows are impeccable, and each of you have a heart of gold. From ‘Bossy Bingo’ to the bounce house, it was the most wonderful way to celebrate our beautiful black and white’s. The colored shavings are upon us, and with that I have to take an opportunity to formally welcome all of the new eyes that may be reading this issue of the News. On behalf of our association, we are so glad to be hosting you here at the “Center of the Dairy Universe”! The thousands of visitors that World Dairy Expo draws annually, truly keeps the sparkle alive. Thank you for making the trip to Madison! And, as fall fades, keep in mind that Junior convention is also on the radar. Keep your eyes peeled for logistics. Fond du Lac has been hard at work and I can guarantee a good time will be had by all. And, going handin-hand with convention are award forms! Be sure to take advantage of all our association has to offer. So many of our contests and awards speak to a wide variety of talents and interests. You can do it! Crystal and I are also very excited to announce our ‘Royalty Bootcamp’ plans to prepare any interested Princess candidates. Together, we challenged ourselves to a year of visibility and public relations and would really appreciate the chance to ready our successors to hit the ground running! Anyone is welcome to participate in our day-long event. It will be hosted on the last Saturday in October at the Holstein office in Baraboo. 2013 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity A Parade of Bovine Beauties by Nicole Smith, WHA Summer Intern The Wisconsin Holstein Association Futurity is always a night to remember, and this year was no exception. The crowd gathered on Saturday, August 10 to watch as “A Parade of Bovine Beauties” entered the arena to compete for the title of champion of the 27th annual WHA Futurity. Judge Chris Lahmers of Marysville, Ohio, had the difficult task of placing 13 of the best Registered Holstein three-year-old cows that Wisconsin has to offer. Krull Sanchez Eminem-ET will go down in the history books as the winner of the 2013 Futurity. Eminem was exhibited by Bryce Krull of Krull Farms, located in Lake Mills, Wis. Bryce received a $1,500 check sponsored by Badgerland Financial. Eminem and Bryce also received Top Bred and Owned and Top Junior Bred and Owned awards, sponsored by Robert and Randy Nigh of Lirr Farms. They were also awarded Best Udder of the show, sponsored by East Central Select Sires, and 1st place Junior in the class, with an in-kind award sponsored by Angela DavisBrown of Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys and cash sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. After the show, exhibitors, sponsors, dignitaries, royalty, and guests gathered for a meal to celebrate the conclusion of another successful show. The meal included steak sandwiches from the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association, pork sandwiches from the Wisconsin Pork Producers, baked potatoes from the Wisconsin Potato Growers, and apple pie from the Wisconsin Apple Growers. Milk chugs were donated by Prairie Farms, and cream puffs were donated by the Wisconsin Bakers Association. The futurity would not be possible without our generous sponsors. Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and refunds made to persons owning females that have been nominated, their share of all monied accrued after the deduction of actual expenses in the promotion of the Futurity. SALE OF ELIGIBLE ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is sold, the eligibility may be transferred to the new owner, and it shall be his responsibility to inform the Futurity Committee of the change of ownership. The seller shall inform the buyer that the animal purchased is already entered in the Futurity. To aid in this, exhibitors will receive an entry certificate for each animal after entry payment has been received. New owners will need to sign an entry form after notification of entry into Futurity. OPEN CLASS SHOWING: If the show is held at the Wisconsin State Fair, all animals shown in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity are eligible upon proper entry to be shown in the open class competition of the Holstein Show. It is the responsibility of the animal’s owner to fill out the necessary forms for open class competition. MISCELLANEOUS: Neither the Wisconsin Holstein Association nor the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity Committee is in any way responsible for the condition of the premises in which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss of persons or property. All matter pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulations and health requirements of any WI Holstein Association sponsored show along with those for the show at which the Futurity is held. PURPOSE: To stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Officially Identified Holsteins of 87% RHA or higher. To promote the Registered Holstein breed and dairy industry to the general public with an appealing and memorable presentation. PROCEDURES: An animal is nominated by an owner. ELIGIBILITY: Any registered Holstein female that was born September 1, 2012 through August 31, 2013 is eligible for the 2016 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. FEES: Entries, along with $35 per animal, must be postmarked on or before January 1, 2014. Animals may be late entered from January 2 - April 30, 2014 for $50 per animal. Full entry fees must accompany entry form or sent within the appropriate time noted above. PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity (plus interest earned) as nomination fees, less the actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity Fund and used only for Futurity purposes. FROM THE FIELD By Sarah Trapp, Holstein USA Regional Field Rep After a busy summer of shows and sales it is easy to see how an $8 investment can affect your herd. Registering your animal unlocks so many avenues that we sometimes all overlook. Registered animals increase the value of your herd just by having good identification information. Proper identification results in improved breeding and milk records. Registered animals can be marketed in your backyard or exported all over the world. With genomic information there is an opportunity for anyone to market females or for selling sons through AI. Our youth really benefit from Holstein activities as well. I have heard so many stories at farms about experiences with little britches, cow camp, showmanship and friends at fairs, as well as Holstein convention with the many activities and contests. Besides being such a great activity for our youth, showing, meetings and conventions are an excellent way for adults to meet other registered breeders and to promote their genetics. So if you are involved with Registered Holsteins, be sure to take advantage of the many offerings the Registered Cow has, and pass on the word that we have a start-up program that allows all Holstein Breeders the chance to register their grade herd. So if you have friends or neighbors with the great Holstein cow, tell them about them many opportunities for them and their family. Yager joins Wisconsin Holstein in Public Relations Role
Ashley Yager has joined the Wisconsin Holstein Association as Public Relations Associate in a parttime capacity. “We are excited to have Ashley on staff, and are looking forward to utilizing her experience in marketing as we create more value for members of our association,” said Larry Nelson, executive director. “Ashley will have a vital role in enhancing the brand of the Wisconsin Holstein Association.” Yager is no stranger to the dairy industry, as she grew up on her parents’ Registered Holstein farm and obtained her bachelor’s degree in dairy science and life sciences communication from UW-Madison in 2007. She served WHA in a similar capacity following graduation before taking a role at ABS Global in advertising and promotions in 2011. While at ABS Global, Yager was responsible for the development and production of marketing materials, press releases and trade show event needs, as well as development of communication plans to meet marketing objectives of the ABS North America business. In the public relations associate role, Yager will be responsible for the writing and distribution of press releases, implementation of an annual marketing calendar, development of collateral materials, and creating and managing content for the Wisconsin Holstein website and all social media channels. Yager will be based from the Baraboo office 20 hours a week, and is looking forward to the extra time at home with husband, Mike, and 9-month-old son, Aidan.

In addition, they built a heifer and calf barn that is connected to the milking barn to accommodate the larger number of animals. Mauk-E-Way is now home to 62 cows with an 80 pound tank average. Their rolling herd average is 24,800 pounds milk, with 920 pounds fat and 820 pounds protein. The farm is home to 55 head of young stock. NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Fellow Holstein Breeders, During the recent genetic evaluation, two more haplotypes effecting fertility were disclosed in the Holstein breed. To be quite frank, these two additional haplotypes are not likely to be the last as genomics allows us to dig deeper into the genetic code than ever before. In the latest work, Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory (AIPL) scientists identified HH4 and HH5 which have low carrier frequencies of 0.7 and 5.0 percent, respectively in Holstein populations. While animals that carry such haplotypes appear normal, when mated to a carrier, one in four progeny would inherit two copies of the suspect haplotype. Depending on the defect, the offspring will not survive long enough to be born or die at birth. The HH4 defect reduces conception rates by 3 percent. Meanwhile, with HH5, nearly all pregnancies are lost before 60 days of gestation resulting in a 3.5 percent reduction in perceived conception rates. The takeaway all the haplotypes is to make sure potential carriers are mated to a clean, noncarrier sire. This can be done by making informed choices by visiting our Holstein website. Currently, you have to sort through the pdf file found at www.holsteinusa.com under Pedigree Information (left section of the website): genetic codes (dropdown tap): haplotypes affecting fertility. We are working to have it available on the family tree function as well. Moving forward, scientists will be able to determine previously known genetic recessives, both good and bad, through the haplotype process (Brachyspina, BLAD, CVM, DUMPS, Mulefoot, polled and red coat color). That situation will allow Holstein to further bundle genetic tests and reduce time and costs for all members. Speaking of genetic tests, the Elite Cow project has been proceeding quite well. It was originally an idea from long-time Holstein breeder, Bob Miller. The purpose was to identify long-lived, high type cows, sample their DNA through genomics and then compare them to the overall Holstein population. Holstein identified 1,442 cows born within a predefined time period where cows that were 85 points or higher over 150,000 lifetime might still be living. After an invitation to participate in the study was extended, breeders submitted 696 samples for nearly a 50 percent response rate. We all look forward to learning more from the study as research ensues. Another separate, but very valuable research project that Holstein is working on is a wide-ranging feed efficiency study. This research will prove valuable at identifying unique genetics that better convert feed to milk. Lastly, Holstein is working with Red & White to fully handle their registration process after the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association membership approved the joint venture by an 89 percent vote earlier this year. As a result, one certificate will register both Holsteins and Red & Whites. Additionally, Holstein will classify all Red & Whites moving forward. It is expected the two breed databases will be reconciled by year’s end. This is just some of the joint initiatives between the two groups. Moving forward, each organization will continue to handle their own magazines and maintain separate membership roles. Our next national board meeting is scheduled for November 21 & 22. From your President Marci Walker Dear Wisconsin Holstein Members, World Dairy Expo is just around the corner, if you are a Holstein enthusiast making a trip there, enjoy the last year on the grounds as we currently know them. This is a very exciting time as the Alliant Energy Center prepares to bring new state-of-the-art facilities for so many venues ready for use in the fall of 2014. Our goal as your Wisconsin Holstein Board is to try to have hosts for state events booked three years out to allow for planning and preparation. In my September column I mentioned that we would be discussing State Championship Show location options at our September Board Meeting. At this time we thank members for their commitment to hosting the 2014 State Championship Show July 14 & 15, 2014 in Iowa County. We do not have any other counties or districts requesting to host beyond 2014. As we look at potentially having 4-5 county locations to rotate to, it seems many county fairgrounds either have facilities that can accommodate our show numbers, but not the membership power to get it done or the membership power, but not the facilities that can accommodate our show numbers. This matter is of glaring concern for us. While a few different State Show options were discussed in depth at the board meeting, it was voted upon and passed to look in more detail what our options might be if we would host our show in Madison at the new Alliant Energy Center grounds beginning in 2015. The State and District Show Committee along with a sub-committee from the WHA Board is working together to review options and see what exactly Madison could offer us. The grounds reservations are already filling up fast, so we are assessing the Alliant Energy Center option in a timely fashion looking at all the pros and cons. If you haven’t already, I invite you to share your thoughts on this subject with a WHA Board Member or the Wisconsin Holstein staff. Each year the Young Adult Committee awards $500.00 Educational Awards to applicants 21-45 years of age to assist in furthering their knowledge within the dairy industry. To apply for a Young Adult Award, interested applicants should call the WHA office at 1-800-223-4269 or visit the website at www.wisholsteins.com by November 15. Applicants must be a member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and their primary source of income should be from the farm. Educational events include, but are not limited to, Young Dairy Leader’s Institute, World Dairy Expo, Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and World Ag Expo. Siemers Holsteins hosts Wisconsin Holstein Picnic The 2013 Wisconsin Holstein Association State Picnic was held on Saturday, August 17, at the Siemers Holsteins farm of Newton, Wis. Over 450 Holstein enthusiasts enjoyed great food, weather and camaraderie on a beautiful August day. The festivities kicked off with lunch at 11:00 a.m. A homemade ice cream stand and fresh lemonade were a nice touch on a warm Saturday. After a great meal, picnic guests were invited to view some of the Siemers’ elite Holstein females, including Critter-Ridge Reba-Red-ET, an EX-92 Contender daughter that was named Supreme Champion at the 2013 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. The Siemers also had an impressive display of high genomic heifers and additional elite females that are on flush and IVF programs. A first for WHA state picnics, the Siemers family held a lead-out judging contest with three classes of Holsteins. Members of the Junior Activities Committee were the gracious volunteers on the halters, and over 80 people participated in this unique contest. Following the contest, picnic attendees were invited back to the tent for a brief program. The MC for the afternoon was board member Kevin Jorgensen, who kicked the afternoon off with a welcome and thank you presentation to the Siemers family. Also taking the microphone was WHA Board President, Marci Walker, and Breed Improvement Committee Chair, Matt Lippert. Guests were fortunate to hear updates from Corey Geiger, National Director, Holstein Association USA, Inc. Members of the Manitowoc County Holstein breeders recognized their youth for accomplishments this year, and the program concluded with a presentation from Steve Rose on “realizing your potential and achieving your purpose.” The final event of the afternoon was bossie bingo, featuring the matriarch herself, Tri-Day Ashlyn. Over $7,000 was raised by the sales of squares for this event to support the Wisconsin Holstein Juniors, Manitowoc County Juniors and Manitowoc County Holstein breeders. The grand prize bingo winner was Todd and Trish Hoesly of Broadhead, who took home a $1,000 check. Wisconsin Holstein would like to extend a thank you to the Siemers family for hosting an outstanding event, and for the outstanding contributions to the juniors as a result of bossie bingo. WISCONSIN MADISON Dairy Science Student Profile Name: Breinne Hendrickson Hometown: Belleville, WI High School: Belleville High School Class Size: 72 Farm: Jeffrey-Way Holsteins Major: Dairy Science and Life Sciences Communication Why did you decide to attend UW-Madison? I chose to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison because I knew I would receive a tremendous education both in and outside of the classroom. I also knew the staff and courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison would be top of the line. What has been your most memorable college experience? I would say the Royal, ADSAs and Marketing Team competition, as well as working at World Dairy Expo. I can’t stress enough how exposure to off-campus activities is extremely important in order to build relationships and networks within the agricultural industry. What has been your favorite course? Dairy Science 305 (Lactation Physiology) because I loved understanding the biological and molecular level as to how cows provide milk and ways to improve milk production in each individual cow. LSC 360 (Information Radio) was another favorite of mine; I was able to create a 30-minute radio show! What are your future career goals? I would like to obtain a career in marketing and communications within the dairy industry, then eventually manage my own dairy promotion and advertising business. I will also be living on a farm upon graduation to continue to grow my own Registered Holstein herd.

One of the most frequently asked questions by one breeder to another is “What looks good at your place?” At our farm, we would have to say the Sanchez, Gabor and Atwood daughters as two year olds. Everyone knows about the Sanchez and Atwoods, but the Gabors are almost as good type-wise and milk better than any group of two year olds we have calved in. Our 13 that have completed their first lactation average actual 305 days of 30,504 lbs. Our close-up heifers are led by Lauthority and Guthrie daughters and breeding age heifers by Hero. Through the whole heifer population, our Atwoods continue to shine. That’s what looks good here!

Dream Team Holsteins
Don and Jenna Fahey met at the Marathon County Fair and started dating after a mutual friend’s wedding. They started buying show calves together only a couple years after they started dating and were married on July 23, 2005. Don has been a hoof trimmer for over 15 years. Jenna has a Bachelor’s degree in nursing and currently works four days a week at an ambulatory surgery center. They have a two year old daughter Malayna, born May 6, 2011, and have another girl on the way and due in mid-November. They started building their herd about six years ago when they purchased Sabofarm Dundee Desiree (in partnership with Jenna’s parents, Rick and Kathy Seefeldt, and Jason Mell), Sabofarm Advent Suki (in partnership with Jason Mell) and Rock-Holm Dundee Harriet (in partnership with Nathan King). All three were housed at Jenna’s parents farm, Seefeldt Acres at that time. In January 2011, they purchased a farm from Jason Mell in Merrill, WI and started remodeling the barn. Jenna’s parents sold their cows in September of that year and the Fahey’s cows were then housed at a friend’s farm until the barn was completed in November. Jason has been a great partner, helping the Fahey’s fill the barn Malayna Fahey with good cows. Don and Jenna started milking with 12 cows and eventually got the barn full, which has 26 tie-stalls and 3 box stalls. They herd also currently consists of about 15 heifers and six calves as well. The herd is bred for high type and longevity and the couple loves good feet and legs and depth of ribs in their cows. They are currently using Guthrie, Sid, Absolute, Gold Chip, Destry and Windbrook. Sabofarm Dundee Desiree, now scored EX-93, is currently just fresh and being flushed to Gold Chip. She comes from 10 generations of Excellent dams. Her VG-87 Goldwyn daughter is also just fresh with her second calf. Sabofarm Advent Suki just went EX-90 at their last classification and has many daughters on the ground, including a VG-87 Sanchez that is also just fresh with her second calf. Rock-Holm Dundee Harriet, EX-90, will be flushed soon to Gold Chip, after Sabofarm Dundee Desiree EX-93 calving this summer with a Guthrie heifer calf. She recently was named Honorable Mention Grand Champion at the Central WI State Fair. Another favorite in the herd is a VG-85 Atwood three-year-old coming from three generations of EX-94 dams that was purchased with Nathan King as a calf. They are excited to see what her Dundee heifer calf will develop into and look forward to flushing her as well. The future of the herd looks bright, as they try to build off of our foundation cows. WHA 2014 Summer Internship Opportunity The Wisconsin Holstein Association is searching for eager Registered Holstein enthusiasts looking to learn more about the industry and wanting to gain valuable experiences that can be utilized in any industry. Applicants attending a 2 or 4 year college are welcomed to apply. It is not required to be majoring in an Agriculture field but background in the dairy industry is preferred. Salary or Hourly: Salary w/ bonus opportunity Reports to: Executive Director & WHP Editor Travel: Up to 50% (requires a personal vehicle with gas mileage reimbursement) Date: May 27-August 15, 2014 (some weekends required) Location: Baraboo, WI
Major Duties & Responsibilities: Event Planning • Attend all WHA sponsored summer events and other county Holstein events. These include the WHA State Championship Show, Showmanship and Judging Contest, Junior State Fair Holstein Show, WHA Futurity and Open State Fair Holstein Show. Intern may also be asked to attend District Shows around the state when needed. • Work with WHA committees to plan events such as the 2014 WHA Futurity, State and District Shows, State Picnic and more. This may include inputing and finalizing show entries, organizing awards, volunteers and other details such as mailings and dignitary needs. • Organize show booklets, meals, send correspondence before and after an event and archive final placing results. Public Relations • Ability to communicate to all areas of the Association in a timely manner • Assist in any communication materials needed for members or external media such as pamphlets, letters, bios and entry forms • Work with external sponsors as it pertains to awards, signage and coordination of events • Build valuable partnerships with industry partners Web, Print and More • Write press releases announcing upcoming events and summarizing placings and/or winnings. • Compile and publish updated marketing materials on WHA website such as press releases, entry forms, event details and imagery. • Take photos of event winners when needed to post online and share with Editor. This will require the creation of an archive for year-end presentations. • Interview Wisconsin Holstein breeders and write profile articles as assigned by the Editor; this may require taking photos for the article. • Write articles of interest for the WI Holstein News and website as well as identify potential roundtable discussions for the News. • Opportunity to learn database management and design e-newsletter creative.

Thoughts from the 2013 Intern, Nicole Smith
My experience as the communications intern for WHA was not only educational and informative, but also gave me lasting friendships and memories. The hands-on experience I had in agriculture communications gave me real world experience of what I can expect after graduation. The small office size lets you be a real part of the team where you can develop and implement your ideas. Having shown Registered Holsteins all my life, it was a real eye-opener to see how the other side of the show works. The internship gave me experience in all aspects of communications, including event planning, social media, writing, and promotion. Whatever your interests are, the internship can really be tailored to your strengths. From planning the annual Futurity show, to writing articles for the Holstein News or traveling all over the state to attend various shows and events, the opportunities are endless. People always say if you are doing what you love you will never work a day in your life, and that is exactly how I felt about this internship. Sometimes my work day consisted of attending a cattle show, talking about dairy with local farmers during an interview, or sharing my passion for the dairy industry with others at various events. How can that be work when it is so much fun? Not only was this internship a great learning opportunity, but I got to meet and interact with many people throughout the agriculture industry. I enjoyed every minute of my time as an intern for WHA and I highly encourage anyone interested in communications to consider applying for this position.

The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Young Adult Committee will be offering monetary awards for young adults to attend educational events in 2014. Erik Gilbertson, Hollandale I own and operate Gildale Holsteins with my family in Hollandale, which is in Iowa County. My wife, Brenda, and I have two daughters, Makenna (almost 3 years old) and Elise (3 months old). My father, Mark, also plays an active role at Gildale. Why did you complete the YAC Educational Award application? As a young farmer, it's important to stay educated and attend industry events. Taking time away from the farm to learn from others is valuable and then can apply those new things to your own dairy. What dairy industry event did you attend and what did you learn from the event? I attended the PDPW Annual Business Conference in Madison. Between the trade show and break-out sessions, I enjoyed connecting with other dairy breeders and also learning ideas to apply to my own operation. In particular, the calf-raising session was very informative. What is your favorite Wisconsin Holstein or dairy industry event and explain why? World Dairy Expo is one of my favorite events because it combines great cows and great people. We are also fortunate that it is held in our backyard and have the opportunity to attend since it is so close to home. What has been your most memorable moment in the dairy industry? I am proud that my wife, Brenda, and I met at World Dairy Expo. Since both of us grew up in the Registered Holstein business, it’s very fitting to celebrate our anniversary there at an event which is very special to us. Would you recommend others to complete the Educational Award application? Young farmers should take advantage of every opportunity to grow. Junior State Fair August 1 & 2 • West Allis, WI
The Wisconsin Junior State Fair Holstein show was held on Thursday, August 1 and Friday, August 2 at the State Fair Park in West Allis. Judge Gerald Coughlin Jr. of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and Associate Judge Chris Booth, Plymouth, Wis., placed a total of 493 head of Holsteins over the two day show, including 248 calves, 204 yearlings and 41 cows. For the first time, a separate Red & White show was held for the junior exhibitors with 57 head participating in that show. Following a deep calf show on Thursday, Judges Coughlin and Booth chose a pair of full-aged Fall Calves as the Calf Champions. Winning Calf Champion honor was Crave Reg Genevieve 7486-ET exhibited by Roseanne Crave of Waterloo. Reserve honors went to Siemers Damion Scar-Let-ET exhibited by Tiffany Roberts of Whitelaw. Friday morning started bright and early with the yearlings parading through the ring. Selected as Yearling Champion and eventual Junior Champion was a summer yearling, Bella-View Goldwyn Julip-ET exhibited by Kayla Krueger of Marion. Reserve Yearling Champion and also named Reserve Junior Champion was Siemers Sid Whip 17669, a spring yearling, exhibited by Josh Siemers, Newton. When selecting the champions, Judge Coughlin commented that it was an honor to place the heifer show and that everything was presented at top quality. The five heifers they had pulled out followed the same pattern - feminine, quality throughout, flatness of bone and depth of rib. He said the summer yearling was “on the money. She has that frame, feet and legs, and bone quality and added strength through the front end.” He went on to say the spring yearling had a lot of quality and was more full in the rear flank than the honorable mention heifer. After a short break, the Holstein cows entered the ring. Judge Coughlin selected Patrick Blair’s Junior 3 Year Old, Jeffrey-Way Advent Dynasty, as the Senior and Grand Champion followed by Jordan Siemers’ 6 Year Old & Older winner, Siemers Dundee Hilda 8669. Judge Coughlin commented that the cow show was not large, but the quality was exceptional. The winning cows also followed a pattern with good mammary systems, deep rib and good feet and legs. He said, “This young cow has a great future. She’s dairy and has a beautiful mammary system.” He selected the reserve champion because of her tremendous scale and beautiful mammary system. New to the Junior State Fair this year was a separate Red & White show. Judge Coughlin also had the duty of placing this show. Selected as Junior Champions were the winning spring yearling, Siemers Brbwire Reba-Red-ET, exhibited by Brooke Roberts, Whitelaw, and winning fall calf Bohnview Barbwire Ling Ling-Red, exhibited by Ben Buske, Brownsville. Grand Champion honors went to Jordan Siemers, Newton, and Critter-Ridge Reba-Red-ET. Reserve Champion went to Carley Krull’s Krull Advent Smiley-Red-ET. Judge Coughlin commented on his champion that “he appreciates her strength through the front end, terrific mammary system and she tracks well on her rear feet and legs.” He also appreciated the tremendous mammary system on the reserve champion. The showmanship contest was held on Saturday with almost 500 youth taking part in the different age groups. Several Wisconsin Junior
Holstein members won their respective age groups, with Ranae Holthaus being named the overall Supreme Champion Showman. Congratulations to all the youth that participated at the State Fair and thank you to the many farms and individuals that sponsored the first and second place trophies for the Holstein Show. Jessica Pralle of Humbird, Wis., took home the Great Northern Cup at the 2013 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. An award that honors a Junior Holstein exhibitor who excels in good sportsmanship, leadership, cooperation with officials and fellow exhibitors, this year’s cup winner provides these qualities and more when it comes to the Holstein show ring. Jessica is the 18-year-old daughter of Scott and Pam Pralle. She grew up on a 450-cow Registered Holstein dairy and has been hooked on the show ring since age four, when she lead her first little britches calf through the ring. An active member of the Junior Holstein Association, Jessica has held several leadership roles within the Clark County group. She says that becoming a part of the Junior Holstein Association allowed her to share her passion with younger kids, both on the family’s farm and in local cattle fitting and showing clinics that she organized. Pralle is a freshman this fall at UW-Madison, where she will study dairy science. She plans to focus on dairy nutrition with a pre-vet focus. She hopes to pursue her dream of being part of her family’s farming operation, as a career in the industry is something she’s dreamed of since she was a little girl. Calf Raffle Tickets – Get them while they’re hot!
The largest fundraising effort of the year is underway for junior programs and events – the Junior Raffle! The calf this year is donated by Forest-Ridge Holsteins, and the Kurt and Sarah Loehr family. There are several additional items available from generous donations, including UW-Mens’ Badger Hockey tickets, a NASCO gift card, various semen certificates and World Dairy Expo passes. Dairy Bowl Deadlines The Dairy Bowl contest will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. Finals will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2014. The deadline to enter a team for the 2013 Dairy Bowl contest will be NOVEMBER 15, 2013. Entries must be IN OFFICE by this date or entry fees will double. The fee to enter teams will remain $10 for Rookie division and $30 for Junior and Senior divisions. Remember, FEES WILL DOUBLE if the entry form is not IN OFFICE by November 15. All potential team member names must be submitted by the November 15 deadline. Please remember, official teams do not need to be named until registration at the 2014 Junior Convention. This includes all possible team members, and there is no limit to the number of juniors that can be included on the list. Names must be included with the entry form to make a completed entry. All coaches and participating team members must be members of the Wisconsin Holstein association. Counties that have juniors wishing to participate on a Wisconsin team must submit their $5.00 entry fee by November 15. This has been put into place so we have a more exact number of teams prior to convention. Please note these updates to the rules for 2014: • Only one coach per team is allowed to stay with the team in the holding room. The coach must stay with the team the entire day, unless the team is eliminated. • Each team will receive 2 verifications (i.e. challenges) per contest (entire contest). All challenges must come from the team captain. Teams will have five (5) minutes to verify the answer and will be allowed a maximum of two sources. Coaches cannot help the team during the challenge. • The ‘call to the coordinator rule’ should only be instituted in very specific circumstances, and also that each team is limited to a maximum of two “call to the coordinator” per the entire contest.

This is always a fun issue to put together, knowing that we’ll be giving it away at World Dairy Expo with such great info about WHA activities and great ads from our Midwest breeders. If you’ve picked this issue up at WDE and would like to become a regular subscriber, visit our website or give us a call at 1-800-2234269. If you’re at WDE and get a chance, stop by our booth on the arena level of the coliseum. We’ll have some fun giveaways each day. Included in this issue is the entry form for the 2016 WHA Futurity. Entries are due January 1 and are $35 per head. If you have any questions about the Futurity, please give our office a call. Don’t forget about our annual cover contest - the deadline for entries is November 15. This year’s theme is “Here, There and Everywhere”. Be creative! The winning entry will be featured on the February 2014 cover. Photos can be mailed to PO Box 49, Lancaster, WI 53813 (5x7 or larger, professional quality print) or emailed to lauraw@wisholsteins.com (5x7 or larger, 300 dpi or higher).
