Obituaries Henry “Sonny” Bartel
Henry “Sonny” Bartel, Ellsworth, Wis., passed away August 2, 2015. Sonny was a legendary dairyman who auctioned off Holstein greats such as Zeldenrust Fond Memory and Johns Luck Barb and owned Ayrshire Grand Champion Oakburn Red Astor. Sonny Bartel was a native of Minnesota and spent his life dedicated to the dairy industry. He spent countless hours in the auction box and showring. In the 1940s his family’s herd was the only farm to ever win all four championships at Harrisburg (Junior and Grand Champion in male and female classes). In 1941, he and his father had 11 Holsteins nominated All-American. Sonny was in the auction box during most of the major Holstein sales during the 1960s and 1970s. He was one of the auctioneers when Johns Luck Barb sold for $122,000 and when Zeldenrust Fond Memory brought $280,000 in 1975. Additional high profile sales include: Lakeside Farms Dispersal in 1967, the Crescent Beauty Sale, Gray View, Braun’s Sunny Lea, Mayer Farms and Lakehurst dispersals. He and Dave Bachmann started the World Premier Sales at World Dairy Expo in 1968. They also partnered together to start Lakehurst
Farms in Wisconsin. In 1967, they had the Grand Champion Bull at World Dairy Expo, Prestige of Lakehurst (EX-95). Sonny was not only a history fanatic for the Holstein breed, but also taught history throughout several schools in Minnesota throughout his life. His last time in the sale box was during the Pinehurst Dispersal in 2011. The dairy industry has truly lost a great dairyman and we extend his family our deepest thoughts during this difficult time.

Thoughts from the 2015 Intern, Sara Griswold
Where did the summer go? As I reflect back on my summer the first word that comes to mind is “wow”! I began my amazing summer internship with the Wisconsin Holstein Association in May. After one day of training, I was able to jump head first in to what turned out to be an unforgettable summer. Throughout the summer I had the opportunity to help plan and attend many events. From the Kids Express Learning Center “Dairy Day” to the crazy week of district shows, Championship Show, and my main focus for the summer, the 29th Annual Holstein Futurity, my summer was truly filled with many wonderful opportunities. As I traveled from district show to district show in June I was able to see fellow Holstein enthusiasts from throughout the state and make new friends along the way. I was also able to see some of Wisconsin’s finest dairy cattle while sitting ringside. I got an inside perspective of the work that goes into planning shows and events that I before took advantage of. It wasn’t long after district show season concluded that the Wisconsin Championship Show was upon us! Being able to bring Wisconsin’s best of the best together to parade around the ring at the spectacular Alliant Energy Center grounds in Madison was truly an incredible experience! Before I knew it the Wisconsin Holstein State Picnic was here and although the day was hot, we made the most of it by dunking some past and present Holstein Stars in the dunk tank at Willows Edge Holsteins in New Richmond. Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy Show was here and gone before I knew it and the most anticipated day of my summer was upon me. Saturday, August 15th was the 29th Annual Holstein Futurity. Eleven dairy cattle from across the state showed in the Holstein Futurity this year. From the ordering of Judge Erbsen’s tuxedo to working with each of the exhibitors to ensure they were ready for the big day, I was in charge of all the details for the show. I am so happy with how the event turned out and hope all the exhibitors and spectators enjoyed it as well. I would like to thank the Wisconsin Holstein staff for making my summer so incredible. There was rarely a day I felt I was going to “work” because I loved what I was doing and who I was working with so much. I would also like to thank the Wisconsin Holstein Board of Directors for reaching out to me at events and the compliments throughout the summer. Also thanks to the WHA adult members, WHA junior members, exhibitors, breeders, volunteers, and sectors throughout the summer for working with me. I will never forget the lessons learned and the opportunities I had this summer. Looking forward to seeing everyone at World Dairy Expo!

Siemers Holsteins 125 Years of Family and Excellence by Ashley Yager
The sixth generation at Siemers Holsteins Connor, Lauren, Josh, Jordan, Crystal and Jake display some of their awards from the 2012 show season
ver the past 125 years, Siemers Holsteins of Newton, Wis., has used their passion and perseverance to help them strive for excellence in the dairy industry. The Siemers homestead is now home to the fifth and sixth generations on the farm. Established in 1890 by Frederick Siemers, the farm in its original state was home to Milking Shorthorns. Frederick’s wife, Caroline Prange-Siemers had grown up with Holsteins on a well-established farm, and was a major player in the decision to change breeds. She was adamant in the need for better cows, so Caroline told Frederick to buy Holsteins (like she had at home). The first three Registered Holstein calves were purchased in 1908. In 1942, Frederick and Caroline’s son Walter (Wally) was next on the scene when he came home to the farm with 26 cows. By 1948 he was milking 40 head, and he expanded again in 1962 to 80 cows. That same year, at the encouragement of his father, Wally purchased a farm, for which he paid less than $100 an acre for (in 1963). The land eventually served as a crucial part of the Siemers’ family now 2400-cow operation. The Siemers’ next big expansion came in 1971, when a freestall barn and parlor were built, enabling the milking herd numbers to grow from 90 to 210 cows. In 1995, when cows left this farm to move to the new facility, the herd average was at 24,516M with 901F and 784P. The most recent transition in management and ownership of the farm was in 1993, when Wally’s four children - Sherry, David, Dan and Paul held a family meeting in January and encouraged their parents to build a new facility. Walter agreed to move forward with expansion, remembering how his father had helped he and Marlene in the past. In 1995, the facilities were expanded to 800 cows. With the entire family now apart of the operation, another expansion was finished in 1997, adding another freestall barn and bringing their total to 1,000 cows. The family hosted Farm Progress Days that same year, and revealed the newly expanded double-24 parlor. The herd continued to grow internally between 100 and 250 cows a year until 2004, when the parlor size was again increased to a double-36. With outstanding herd management from the family, the current facilities are at max capacity, allowing them to sell up to 700 cows a year for dairy. There are 2,726 cows on test milking 3x with a rolling herd average of 37,121M 3.8% 1422F and 3.0% 1129P. They also have a SCC around 100. Holsteins have been an integral part of the Siemers family, as the passion has been carried on through the generations. Walter’s wife, Marlene (Hagenow), was named Holstein Girl in 1962. Their daughter, Sherry, followed in Marlene’s footsteps and received the Outstanding Holstein Girl honor in 1981. Each of the Siemers children attended college and gained some outside experience before returning to the home farm. Sherry and Dan both attended UW-Madison with Sherry receiving her degree in Ag Journalism and Dan in Dairy Science. Sherry worked at RuAnn Dairy for almost three years after graduation and Dan worked at Sire Power, selling semen in

central Wisconsin. Paul was employed at Golden Oaks Farm after graduating from UW-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course. Finally, while David has always worked at the farm, he also has a degree from Lakeshore Technical College. There is a saying that it takes an army, and the Siemers family is a testament to the success of a small family army. Walter and Marlene are still on the farm, helping with everything from yard work to laundry and lunches. Paul works daily with the cows and manages the crops, wife Jenny works off the farm, and their children Josh, Jake and Lauren help on the farm. Dan makes genetic and milk marketing decisions, and his wife, Janina, handles the finances and office work for the dairy. Their oldest son, Jordan, is in college at Cornell and son Connor is in high school. Next, David handles the feeding of the herd and the shop and machinery maintenance. Sherry is at the home farm and does a lot of individual cattle care. Husband Jack is retired and helps with special projects on the farm and their daughter Crystal is in her third year at the University of Minnesota. When the sixth generation of Siemers started to show an interest in the farm, the family started their version of a ‘cow camp’ program. All of the kids came to the home farm and helped with calf chores, such as cleaning pens, washing buckets, weeding flowers, and picking rocks. The kids have really bonded and become good friends, and their time spent on all aspects of the dairy has given them the chance to work with their project animals while learning fundamental skills. With the interest from the next and youngest generation, the Siemers family decided to update their 1970s freestall barn to house 25 top-end pedigree, genomic and show cattle. Not only did they improve facilities, but this upgrade allowed everyone at ‘camp’ more opportunities for learning and hands-on experiences with the project cattle. Now that many of the kids are teenagers, they have had the chance to work at the large dairy as well, working with the fresh cows, dry treating, help-

ing with calves, moving cattle, and various other projects. While Jordan and Crystal are in enrolled in ag-related collegiate programs, the youngest Siemers are growing their skills and taking on more responsibilities on the farm. The Siemers’ quest for excellence in production and herd performance has led them to utilize almost all genomic sires in their breeding program. At the commercial dairy, there is one proven bull they continue to use, Sully-Hart Meridian. They like the consistency and quality of his daughters that are calving in. At the show dairy, they use a majority of young sires, but will still use top daughter proven bulls. In the barns, some of their favorites are sired by Meridian, Mogul, Defiant, and Doorman. They focus on breeding open-ribbed, dairy cows with a will to milk. Quality mammary systems with great attachments as well as functional feet and legs are key to maintaining their outstanding herd average. With a great group of cows comes many herd favorites, headlined by Siemers Dundee Haya-9652-ET, EX-92 (max), and her daughters. Haya has seven Excellent daughters and an additional 19 Very Good, including the Unanimous All-American Fall Yearling in Milk in 2014, Siemers GS Haya-Dream-ET, VG-88 EX-MS at two years of age. Haya Dream is a Goldsun daughter that was also High Honorable Mention Junior AllAmerican Fall Calf in 2013. Siemers Goldwyn Galaxy-ET, EX-94 in her third lactation, is a Goldwyn daughter of Damion Glam 9633, EX-92. Galaxy was a member of the All-American Junior Best Three in 2009 and Reserve Junior AllAmerican Senior Two in 2011. Her sister Glams, EX-93, was third in the World Dairy Expo Holstein Futurity in 2012. Glams was a member of both the Nominated All-American Senior Best Three and Nominated AllAmerican Produce of Dam in 2012. Siemers Goldwyn Goldie, EX-94, is a full sister to Galaxy and Glams and is owned by Jordan & Whitney Ebert. In 2012, she captured the Supreme Champion title of the World Dairy Expo Junior Show. The family has also developed an outstanding group of Red and White Holsteins. Their headliner from the 2015 summer show season was Siemers Destry Joy-Red-ET, EX-92 EX-94-MS, who died unexpectedly from a heart infection just hours before her class at the Red and White Midwest Fall National Show. While it’s difficult to lose an animal under any circumstance, the loss of Joy was especially tough, as she was a oneof-a-kind complete package. This summer, Joy was named Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Red and White State Show, and Intermediate Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Black and White Show. In 2014, she was first senior two and Intermediate Champion at the State Red and White Show, and Best Bred and Owned. In 2012, Joy was also Reserve All-American Red and White Winter Calf. Joy’s dam is Fradon Redman Jubiliee-Red-ET, EX-92 EX-94-MS, Reserve All-American Red and White Four Year Old in 2010. She is from the Fradon Encount JodieRed, EX-2E-16* family in Canada. The legacy of this tremendous family will live on for years to come as there are several other outstanding family members who have had show ring success. While there is no doubt the Siemers crew has excelled in the show ring, they have been making a splash in genomics as well. Gen-I-Beq Shottle Bombi-ET, EX-94, was nominated Global Cow of the Year in 2015, continued on page 15
2015 Wisconsin Cow of the Year: Siemers Dunde Hilda 8669-ET EX-95 GMD A bit bossy and strong, yet patient with kids and hard working – all qualities that best describe our 2015 Wisconsin Cow of the Year, Hilda. An anchor of Breeder and Exhibitor banners at state and national shows, Hilda just knows when she needs to have a good showing and the Siemers family is counting on her. As a calf, Hilda was close to death several times with pneumonia. Even though the vets suggested the Siemers family cull Hilda at an early age because of her questionable lungs, they resisted and she pushed through, survived and has thrived. She is the perfect patient when ill, and a great eater with an “I can” attitude. In 2005, the Siemers family made the decision to purchase Hilda’s dam, Mayerlane-DK Rudolph Hiawatha-ET, EX-90 DOM, from Adolf Langhout. Her granddam, 4E-95 GMD DOM Golden-Oaks Mark Prudence, was a tremendous cow for the Mayer family but never offered for sale. Her influence was viewable in many other herds, and her high type and production drew the Siemers family to the cow family. Hilda has had a prolific show career for her owner, Jordan Siemers. In 2013 and 2014, Hilda was the Overall NASCO Type and Production Award Winner at World Dairy Expo’s International Holstein Show. She is a two-time Junior All-American production cow (2011 and 2013) and was named Grand Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo in 2011. Along with her outstanding type, Hilda has also been a tremendous production cow in her own right. Her highest record to date at 4-10 on 2x milking in 365 days produced 56,780 pounds of milk with 3.1% 1746F and 3.2% 1749P. Her lifetime totals to date with 1998 days on test include over 254,000 pounds of milk with over 8,700 pounds fat and 8,000 pounds protein. Hilda will be ten years old this October, and the Siemers family plans on bringing her to shows as long as she can still compete with the best – they can never count her out. One of her true Hilda moments was at the 2013 WI Championship Show, when she took her front foot and shoveled shavings from the show ring onto the crowd and WHA staff member Ashley Yager who was taking photos of the champion lineup. A cow that prefers to live by herself, Hilda can be a little bossy and doesn’t always mix well with younger cows. The entire family loves Hilda, and visitors admire her for what she is – a beautiful, hard working milk cow. Each year, a Wisconsin purebred cattle association selects a cow to represent her breed as the Cow of the Year. The honor is rotated annually between the seven major dairy breeds. Hilda was nominated and selected by the members of the Wisconsin Holstein Association.

2015 Wisconsin State Fair
Junior State Fair August 6 & 7 • West Allis, WI
The Wisconsin Junior State Fair Holstein show was held on Thursday and Friday, August 6 and 7 at the State Fair Park in West Allis. Judge Chris Hill of Thurmont, MD, and Associate Judge Brian Kelroy of DeForest, Wis., placed a total of 448 head of Holsteins over the two day show, including 218 calves, 193 yearlings and 37 cows. The Red & White show had 78 head participating in that show. Following a deep calf show on Thursday, Judges Hill and Kelroy selected a pair of fall calves as Calf Champions. From group 3, Crystal Siemers-Peterman’s heifer, Siemers C-Vet Haya-Brite-ET was named champion over Maddy Hansen’s group 1 winning calf, Hillpine DS Night Moves. Judge Hill commented that he was blown away by the quality of the show “and this is just the calf show!” He went on to say the older fall calf exhibits what he’s looking for - dairyness and strength. “She’s got a wide muzzle and chine, with great angularity and is a great legged heifer.” Hansen’s calf was named reserve over the honorable mention calf because “she is more feminine and exhibits more breed character through the head and neck.” The yearling show started bright and early Friday morning. Selected as Champion Yearlings were the first and second place Winter Yearlings. Champion Yearling was Hillpine B Anya-ET exhibited by Megan Lauber and Reserve Champion was Sayabec Nykon Nydja exhibited by Jessica Mullikin. Judge Hill commented that these heifers topped a great class of heifers and the “black heifer is a slam dunk - she’s got more depth and openness of rib and tracks on a great set of feet and legs.” Siemers-Peterman’s Calf Champion was also named Junior Champion and Lauber’s Winter Yearling was named Reserve Junior Champion. Topping the cow show for the second straight year was Chloe Vosters and Milksource Durham Giggle-ET. Reserve went to Megan Lauber’s winning Junior 3-Year-Old, Hillpine Rainey Alyssa. Judge Hill commented that this 4year-old is “the belle of the ball. She’s high in the chine, spells quality with a capital Q and walks comfortably on her rear feet and legs.” The reserve champion was higher in the rear udder and nice through the crops and chine than the honorable mention cow. Selected as Junior Champion of the Red and White Show by Judge Hill was Siemers About Greta-Red-ET exhibited by Lauren Siemers. Reserve Junior Champion was 2nd-Look Bwire 12567-Red-ET exhibited by Kaianne Hodorff. Grand Champion honors went to a pair of 4-YearOlds, Rosedale 2 Hot 2 Handle-Red exhibited by Carley Krull and Hi-Val
Absolt Fantastic-Red exhibited by Jenna Olson. The showmanship contest was held on Saturday with almost 500 youth taking part in the different age groups. Several Wisconsin Junior Holstein members won their respective age groups, with Abigail Powers being named the overall Supreme Champion Showman. Siemers Holsteins - continued from page 9 nominated Canadian Cow of the Year in 2013, and has a VG Meridian daughter in the herd at +2475 GTPI. There is also a granddaughter in the herd by Halogen at +2635 GTPI. They are also working on developing the family of Cherry-Crest Manoman Roz-ET, EX-91. Roz was purchased as a calf in the World Classic Sale. Her Lottomax great-granddaughter is the #1 GLPI Lottomax at +3300 and is +2633 GTPI. Her dam is a VG-85 +2575 GTPI Supersire then EX-92 Windbrook. They are also starting to utilize high type sires on Roz, as she has daughters that are EX, VG and GP, with none lower. The epitome of a balanced genomic cow, Cookiecutter Mog HankerET, VG-88 at two years of age, was purchased at the Planet Holstein Sale last fall. Hanker is an eighth generation Excellent uddered cow, who held the #1 GTPI position after the December 2014 run. The Siemers have had great success flushing Hanker, and have daughters on the ground by Draco. The highlight of their red and white genomic program is Siemers Mogul AppleStar-ET *RC, VG-86. AppleStar is currently the #1 *RC PTAT Cow (GP and higher) after the August 2015 run, and she is #8 PTAT overall. She is a Mogul x EX-91 Shottle x EX-96 Apple. Her Crown-P daughter is the #1 Red PTAT Heifer, #1 Polled PTAT Heifer, #1 Red CONF and #1 Polled CONF heifer. She also has a +2492 *RC Halogen daughter. Registered Holsteins have provided a wealth of opportunities for the Siemers family, as they recall some of their favorite memories in the business. At the most recent WI Junior State Fair, three daughters from Siemers Dundee Haya 9652-ET, EX-92, by three different sires, all won their respective classes. This day was made even more memorable when the Corvette daughter was named Champion Calf and Junior Champion and the Reginald daughter was Honorable Mention Champion Calf. In 2014, Siemers Holsteins truly had a remarkable World Dairy Expo. Thursday was capped off with Siemers Defnt Great-Red-ET being selected as Junior Champion of the International Red and White Show. On Saturday, two more Siemers cows shined and brought home blue ribbons in the Milking Yearling and Junior Two Year Old classes. The experience of such a tremendous World Dairy Expo still makes Sherry a little giddy when reflecting on the week. At the county level, when Paul was 12 years old, he had a really good calf named Leslie that won her class at the county fair. He and the family prepped her for the big show at World Dairy Expo, only to be disappointed there was not a March calf class. One great thing that came from the Manitowoc County Fair, other than great times with calves and kids, was when Walter and Marlene met on a show box on a Sunday afternoon. The rest is history! Another fond memory that the Siemers recall is the 100th year of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and the Championship Show that was held at the Wisconsin State Fair. Their entry, Nekimi-Acres Mark Ruperta, EX-92, was Grand Champion of the show and the family treated their fellow Holstein friends to a night of great hospitality. When it comes to the latest generation on the farm, the kids are making memories that are extra special. Sherry says watching her daughter Crystal and Sherry’s nephews and niece all enjoy the cattle and farm while making friends and gaining knowledge about our industry, reminds her a lot of the experiences growing up for her brothers and her. Paul also loves coaching the judging team and working with the youth in Manitowoc County. Last year his team placed third at Expo, and Jordan was high individual in the 4-H contest. Janina has worked and coached state and national dairy quiz bowl teams while Dan continues to be the farm visionary and has been increasing his involvement in the Land O’ Lakes leadership committees. Through the transitions and expansions, the Siemers family feels fortunate and honored to have had the opportunity to be in the dairy business for 125 years. There is no doubt there will be continued excellence for the Siemers and the next generation as they transition from their education to an industry position of their own. Wisconsin Holstein would like to congratulate the Siemers family on 125 years in business, as we commemorate the 2015 Cow of the Year – Siemers Dunde Hilda 8669-ET, EX-95 GMD (see sidebar, page 9).

Wisconsin Holstein Young Adult Members Featured Young Farmer - Car-Cor Holsteins, The Biely Family Car-Cor Holsteins is a registered herd owned and operated by Cory, Clare, & Coraline Biely and Cara Biely. Their 9-acre farm is home to 75 cows with a total of 125 head, with a rolling herd average at 24,000 pounds of milk. The farm was established in April 2011 – the first time the Bielys milked for themselves. Cory and Cara housed cattle at different farms prior to starting their own barn, but to start on their own, they bought 50 cows from a client of Clare’s. The first farm they milked at was 18 miles away. They now milk at a farm just three miles away from their home. Cory was a herdsman for four different farms that ranged in size and commercial/registered herds to gain knowledge before starting on his own. A day at Car-Cor begins with the ration – cleaning leftover feed, mixing, and feeding again. Dry cows come in off the pasture, cows are milked and then calves and heifers fed. During the summer the milk cows are out during the night on pasture; during the winter they are out during the day. Some days the routine includes washing cattle, but it almost always includes some form of cropping, fixing, cleaning or additional feeding. The Bielys’ favorite part of dairy farming is the opportunity to be outside and work with the cattle, along with watching the developing genetics over time by improving cow families. Cory especially enjoys feeding and milking cows, and the chance to care for them on a daily basis. It allows him to watch cows for health and better manage the entire herd. The Biely family is first generation farmers; their dad works for a construction company and their mom is an administrative consultant. Cory and Cara feel working as a brother and sister team has developed a greater bond between and they work very well as a team. Cory was very involved with he and Cara’s grandpa when he farmed. The Bielys also really enjoy the energy from the people that they have worked with. They see the dairy industry as one big family; everyone will help out when needed or ask and

they are always there for when you have questions or want to try something new. It is a very rewarding industry that is ever changing and to know that they provide a wholesome product to consumers like themselves, makes those early mornings and late nights that much easier. One thing that makes the Biely family so excited about owning and raising registered cattle is knowing the pedigree behind the animal – they feel that it makes cattle more valuable when it comes time to resell. Along with classification, buyers can feel more confident in purchasing animals seeing their parentage. The Bielys have been involved in the Wisconsin Holstein Associaiton for 14 years. They have also been active in Farm Bureau as young farmer chair for the county, and as past county Holstein president. Cory also serves on the local fire department as lieutenant and on the board. One of the biggest challenges the Biely family has faced is fluctuation in prices and playing the market game. When they started they faced high feed prices, and the following year a drought made for a tough time to start a business. The most inspiring people to the Bielys in the dairy business have been Lynn & Sara Harbaugh. They have always helped and opened their doors. Cory was herdsman for them for about three years when they milked, and they have provided valuable information for the Bielys to start farming on their own. Lynn is still a valuable asset as their AI rep and also helping them find cattle to buy when needed. The Harbaughs are great role models and family friends that they can always lean on. When it comes to future plans, the Car-Cor group hopes to continue acquiring land and cattle to grow but still stay at a size where they can work with the cattle on a daily basis. Cory hopes WHA will keep being a valuable asset like it has been and an association that he can lean on to provide valuable information for the Registered Holstein breed. The dairy industry is ever changing and Cory feels the wholesome product he and his family produce will help the economy to prosper. photos „ Farmgirl Photography

at the University of Minnesota because we offer a unique blend of Big Ten excitement with the down-home comfort of our small St. Paul campus.
The Gopher Dairy Club is one of the largest and most active at the University of Minnesota. It’s your ticket to ADSA activities, Senior Trip to California, the campus-wide fun of Minnesota Royal, and scholarships for incoming new members – all of which are funded by our student-managed Gopher Dairy Bar at the Minnesota State Fair. And, our students are well known in dairy cattle judging, National Dairy Challenge, as well as National Dairy Shrine, which “Gophers” have consistently been awarded the most scholarships over the past decade. Academically speaking, our dairy faculty has declared teaching its top priority, so students are always first.

Lafayette collector achieves Guiness World Record to achieve the Guinness record. The witnesses commented on some of the major categories that they listed, finding 3,264 figurines, 888 stuffed animals, 605 items of wearing apparel, and 537 mugs, glasses, pitchers, etc. Each piece is numbered before it is put on display and is recorded by description, size, material, and acquisition (purchased or gift/ cost/date) on a computer spreadsheet. The assigned number is placed on the item with a sticker, or written on it. The collection started in the mid- to later 1970s with just a few pieces. It now fills every shelf, cabinet, couch, desktop, staircase ledge, kitchen counter, wall space, bedroom, closet, bathroom, the entire basement including the furnace room, and nook and cranny of the house. About a dozen larger pieces are displayed outdoors in summer. In June, two witnesses spent two days counting every piece in the collection, as required
The collection includes every type of item imaginable—tins, bags, boxes, baskets, coffee mugs, plates, teapots, salt & peppers, creamers & sugars, toothpick holders, watches, wall clocks, alarm clocks, night lights, banks, music boxes, Christmas ornaments, cigarette lighters, artist prints, wall hangings, stuffed animals, toys, miniatures, barns, card games, golf balls, dog toys, puzzles, jewelry, ceramics, milk bottles, milking machines, T-shirts, sweatshirts, other
clothing items, quilts & throws, pillows, statues, photos, books, greeting cards, postcards, candy, bookends, lamps, pieces made from cow manure, items from many foreign countries, and much more. Some of the items date back to Ruth’s youth and 4-H days, including trophies from showing cows and wooden advertising pencils that relate to dairy cattle. Klossner’s love of (real) cows started when she was very young. Some of her first pets were calves. She took an active part in working with her family’s herd of 30 Holstein cows near New Ulm, Minnesota. Her mother died in 1966 when Ruth was a senior in high school and her father quit dairy farming. Ruth continued to stay active in 4-H and kept her prize-winning 4-H cow for six years, boarding her in different dairy herds. The cow was champion of the Minnesota State Fair 4-H show in 1966. Klossner was named Minnesota Holstein Girl in 1967 and National Holstein Girl in 1968.

Minnesota Brood Cow Profile: Markwell Dundee Dorian-ET John and Rachel Holmgren from Motley, MN built its foundation on strong cow families with solid type. The Holmgren’s entered Markwell Dundee Dorian into Minnesota’s Brood Cow contest for 2015 and she is a well deserved winner. Markwell Dundee Dorian-ET (EX-94 3E GMD) is a Dundee daughter from Markwell Durham Doreen-ET (EX 91 3E GMD) x Markwell Luke Rapture-ET (EX 92 4E GMD) Markwell BStar E Raven-ET (EX 92 3E GMD) x Markwell Mark Elite (EX 92 4E GMD) x Rockalli Mars Emily (EX 94 4E GMD) Dorian has proven herself to be one of the best brood cows on the Holmgren farm so far. With a strong pedigree it is no surprise that she passes that along to her daughters. Holmgren Talent HannahET is a 2 times EX 92 daugher, her full sister Homgren Talent Montana also scores EX 92 and was the reserve All-MN Junior three-
Markwell Dundee Dorian-ET
year-old in 2014. Other daughters following in their mothers footsteps are Holmgren Snowman Dream (VG 87) who was reserve All-MN junior calf and has peaked her production at 123 pounds on two times per day milking. Dorian’s son Holmgren Osborndale Ivanhoe owned by David Joos Jr. has scored 94 points and daughter Holmgren Goldsun Dana (VG 86) was the second place milking yearling at the Minnesota State Fair and a part of the first place produce of dam class at the 2014 District show. In addition to all the progeny listed Dorian has three VG Shottle two year-old daughters, 2 VG Renaissance Triumphant two year-old daughters and a fancy summer calf Brokaw daughter. Markwell Dundee Dorian is a backbone to Holmgren’s strong cow family and will continue to create strong progeny for the next generation of cow families from Holmgren Holsteins
Minnesota Holstein Feature Story The full story can be found in the Minnesota Holstein News
Women in Overalls While the overall number of farms in the U.S. are declining, the number of women in charge are on the rise. Although there is no doubt women have always played an important part in farm life, their roles seem to be evolving. Since 2002 alone there has been a 30% increase in women managing farms. The women involved in the Minnesota Holstein Association are no exception to these figure. Jill Nelson, Katie Olson and Shelby Mahoney are all Minnesota Holstein members who are some of many women that can not only be found involved in their local Holstein clubs but also helping manage their family farming operation as well. These women are not only a part of the Holstein industry but also the future of it. Tell us about you and your farm operation: JN: I farm with my husband, Brian and children, Isaac, 15 and Josh, 13 on my family’s farm. We moved back to the farm in 2002 and purchased the farm from my dad, Roger and uncle, Floyd, in 2009...
KO: I am the herd manager at Olson-Lane Holsteins, my family farm owned by my parents, Jim & Beth Olson, where we milk 65 cows in a tie stall barn. We raise our 75 heifers on site, run 300 tillable acres of alfalfa and corn. 280 of those acres are on the home farm and we rent 120 acres from my grandparents, Allen & Donna Aarsvold. I presently own 20 animals. 13 registered Holsteins, 6 Jerseys under the Inspire Jerseys name and recently bought a Red and White heifer this summer... SM: I am currently working on my parent’s dairy farm in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. We have around 80 milking registered Holstein cows both Black & White and Red & White. White. Our cows are in a 65 tie stall barn and we also have some switch cows on a bedded pack. We milk twice a day with 5 automatic take off milkers. Most of the work on the farm is done by my parents and me, with some help on weekends or during busy times from our hired help. Dad mixes feed for the milk cows, feeds heifers, cleans and beds the outside animals, does maintenance work on equipment.... (full story can be found on pages 12-14 of Minnesota Holsteins News)

“All Roads Lead Thank You for attending the Dale and I would like to thank everyone who had any part in the recent successful 2015 National Holstein Convention. The committee chairmen did an outstanding job. The volunteers were a help beyond expectations. Those who attended any event were greatly appreciated. I know all have busy schedules and priorities to home and family are important. Your participation is what made the convention a huge success. Many, many positive comments were made by attendees and 2015 in Illinois made a lasting impression on Holstein breeders and industry people from across the nation and internationally. Also we send a huge thank you to all our sponsors and monetary and in kind contributors. Without you none of this would have been possible. Minnesota Holstein History mindless ramblings down an endless cow lane. by John Busacker
“My favorite bull”
“A good day to buy cows”
There have been many great sires in the last 40 years, Durham and Storm would be right at the top of my list, but the greatest bull to come along is Round Oak Rag Apple Elevation in my opinion. I will not bore anyone with numbers and proofs, if anyone is interested they can look them up. Elevation is the greatest sire I have ever seen come for one reason. He had the ability to work on anything. It did not matter what a cows breeding, records or classification was. You had just as good a chance of getting a great daughter from a 68pt cow as you did an 86pt cow. There were offspring in Minnesota that you might remember.
Henry Bartel Seniors Beau Vache herd was dispersed Sept 9, 1968. It is the only time in history a 96, 94, 93 pt cow were sold in Minnesota at public auction. The queen of the herd and star of the sale was Texal Beau Babe who was scored EX 94 at the time and later scored EX 96. She was All-American three year-old in 1965 and a major favorite at a number of Minnesota shows for years to come. Her daughter sold for $16,000 in the 1974 Golden Gopher Classic. Henry’s brother Harvey Bartel purchased her. Beau Robanon Lois was EX 92 at the sale and later scored EX 94-4E. Lois was seven times All-Minnesota or reserve All-Minnesota. She was Grand Champion at the 1972 state HolMarti’s bred Olmar Elevation Bess EX 92 All-Min- stein show, had an EX 92 astronaut daughter and nesota as a calf and 2 year old and Olmar Elevation a triple threat daughter that topped the Golden Gopher Classic at $38,000. She was purchased by Dazzling Star EX 94, if she had only been a little bigger she could have room anywhere. Deer Brook Olsondale Farms, Virgil Olson and sons. Beau Gilmore Ray Apple EX 93 was bred by Agrimson’s Patsy O-Day was scored EX 92 and later scored EX and later sold to an investor herd. Bill Eustice bred 93-3E She had a great grad daughter Walnut Lake a sire that was All-Minnesota and Honorable men- Topper Rhonda who topped the Walnut Lake Sale at $5,700 on April, 25 1977. She was purchased by tion All-American in 1981. Howard and Marion George Lorenz. Heins bred several excellent Elevation daughters and Esmur-Downs Elevation Bell EX-95. The allHow did the three cows sell at the Beau Vache American aged bull in 1979. Herd dispersal? Babe brought $3,700, Lois $2,400 and Patsy $1,800. A 96, 94, and 93 point cow all for just over $8000. Not a bad day to buy a cow.

MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2015 - 37
29th Annual WHA Futurity Eleven three-year-old Holstein cows paraded around the coliseum at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wisconsin on Saturday, August 15 to compete for the title of first place in the 29th Annual Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. John Erbsen of Lanark, Illinois served as the official judge. The Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is a non-traditional cattle show, where the exhibitors enter their animals three years prior to the show in hopes of raising a high-quality show cow. It is a prestigious show where only the best in Registered Holsteins compete. Topping the class was Milksource Dty Tammy-Red-ET, owned by Grady and Lane Wendorf and Dawson and Kylie Nickels of Ixonia and shown by Ryan Krohlow. They received a $1,500 check from Badgerland Financial, a major sponsor of the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Milksource Dty Tammy-Red-ET was also named the Best Udder of the show sponsored by East Central Select Sires and was the top fat and protein production winner sponsored by Rural Mutual Insurance Agent, Brian Greenman. In second place was Oeh-My Atwood Enso, owned by Chase and Willow Oehmichen of Abbotsford and shown by Chad Ryan. She took home a check for $750 presented by International Protein Sires. Enso was also named the top milk production winner sponsored by Rural Mutual Insurance Agent, Brian Greenman. Miss Summer Song-ET, owned by Dawson and Kylie Nickels of Watertown and shown by Dawson Nickels placed third. Agropur presented a check for $500 to the Nickels siblings. Miss Summer Song-ET was also the first place Junior and received an award sponsored by Angela Davis-Brown of Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys and $50 sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Even though the cows are the stars of the show, the WHA Futurity is a time for our exhibitors to exchange their blue jeans and boots for ball gowns and tuxedos. All the exhibitors dressed to impress, but only three best-dressed individuals were named. Each best-dressed individual received a trophy with a photo frame and a cash award. Best Dressed Junior was awarded to Nicole Wright and sponsored by Frisle-Vu Holsteins. Joel Kietzman was awarded the Best Dressed Adult Male sponsored by Indianhead Holsteins. Scenic-Edge Holsteins was the sponsor for the Best Dressed Adult Female and this award went to Christa Wendorf. Courtney Booth and Kristin Olson served as Mistresses of Ceremonies for the evening where they helped to introduce the exhibitors and dignitaries. In attendance were Wisconsin Secretary of Agriculuture, Ben Brancel; Alice in Dairyland, Teyanna Loether; Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs, Deanna Schlies; WHA Princess, Sierra Lurvey; WHA Princess Attendant, Cierra Ehrke-Essock; National Red and White Queen, Carley Krull; Wisconsin RWDCA Princess, Savannah Micke; Green and Dane County Dairy Royalty, and National Anthem singers, Bryce Krull and Molly Sarbacker. The futurity would not be possible without our generous sponsors. WHA would like to thank the major futurity sponsors, Badgerland Financial, International Protein Sires, Agropur and Brian Greenman, Rural Mutual Insurance Agent, for helping to make this show a success. 38 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2015

Best Young Cows at Nor-Way-Pete Owned by: Thomas & Florine Bunkelman Brooke, Brent & Brodie
We really like our Heros, Gold Chips, Bradnicks and Sids. Ultra fancy 2-year-olds with exceptional udders. Classification will be fun for a long time as we have many more daughters of all four bulls to still calve. They are following the footsteps of Atwood and Sanchez, two of the best bulls we have ever used. Question: Why do the high GPTAT young sires seem to maintain their high ranking for type when proven, while we see much more fluctuation in NM and health traits? The classifier only looks at the young sire daughters for about two minutes. I’m sure there is a good reason.

MARATHON COUNTY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS
Selling Cheese Curds with Pride The Marathon County Holstein Breeders manage a cheese curd stand at several events during the year. The cheese curd stand was started in 1988 when the board was looking for a way to make a little extra money. The group first started to sell at The Athens Fair using cheese curds from Bledsoe’s Cheese of Marathon. In 1996 they sold curds at the Wisconsin Farm Progress Days at Ross Farm in Marathon. In 1998 they expanded to sell at The Edgar Steam Engine Show and from 2004 to 2006 sold at The Marathon Tractor Pull held on Father’s Day. Deep fried pickles were added to the menu in 2002 and, on average, sell 225 pounds of pickles. Cheese curds sales average 12001300 pounds each year. Workers in the stand receive a $10 Fleet gift card for each shift they work. When they first started the stand, Don and Linda Christiansen, Eddie Mielke, and Dan and Michelle Mielke helped to organize the helper schedule. For the first five years the stand was rented from the Wittenberg Lions Club and the group got the ingredients through them as well. In 1993, the Holstein Breeders built their own stand with the help of Dan Mielke and started to get the ingredients though Village Spirits Restaurant. The floor of the stand was fixed in 2008 and the frame rebuilt in 2015. Proceeds from the cheese curd stand helps pay for scholarships, the Awards Banquet, trophies for first place winners at the Wisconsin Valley Fair for both the black and white and red and white Holstein shows. Association funds pay a portion of the county ads put in the Wisconsin Holstein News and helps sponsor the county overnight spring trip to visit other farms. The group also helped the Athens Fair to build a cover over the show ring, paid for one of the judges at the Wisconsin Valley Fair until 2011, and helps sponsor the Little Britches show at the Wisconsin Valley Fair and the Athens Fair. With the success the Marathon County Holstein Breeders have had with the cheese curd stand, they Long lines at this year’s cheese curd stand would encourage other associations to try such a at the Athens Fair fundraiser.

Sierra’s Holstein Scoop Hello fellow Holstein fans! With the start of school and change in weather, the beginning of fall is upon us. This means sweaters, harvesting crops, and World Dairy Expo. The onset of fall is a bittersweet time, as the showing season is coming to a close for the year. This summer I made many wonderful memories as Princess Attendant Cierra Ehrke-Essock and I traveled across the state to different shows, schools, and Holstein events. One of my favorite events was the Wisconsin State Fair. I have always exhibited in the junior dairy show so it was fun to be in the ring again this year, especially in my new role. Thank you to everyone who participated in the open show, Futurity, or in the largest junior dairy show in the country. Good luck to everyone who will be exhibiting on the colored shavings
at World Dairy Expo this year. October is known for the greatest cattle show in the world and hopefully everyone gets a chance to attend. Besides being able to watch some fabulous bovines parade around the ring, Expo attendees have the chance to meet industry people and attend the worldclass trade show which is geared towards dairy farming. Along with my duties in the ring for Princess, I will also be an intern for Expo again this year so stop on into the milkhouse to say “hi” any time during the week. The Wisconsin Holstein Princess applications were due Sept. 15 along with the Distinguished Junior Member, Young Distinguished Junior Member, and 12 & Under Member Recognition awards. Cierra and I are excited to get to know all of the young ladies who applied this year. The Royalty program is a great opportunity to be a dairy advocate while making lasting friendships. Make sure to check our Facebook page at Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess or the Wisconsin Holstein Association website for more information about our year. Cierra and I are excited to walk potential candidates through the role of being Holstein Royalty and the responsibilities that come with it! Awards due November 15 are the Junior Progressive Breeder Award, Long Range Production Award, Junior Farm Tour Award, and Wisconsin Holstein Youth (WHY) Friend Award. Don’t miss the opportunity to fill these applications out as they are a good way to be more involved in Wisconsin Holstein. That’s the Scoop! Sierra Lurvey

These days, Dean and Dori, along with their three sons and daughtersin-law - John and Marci, Tim and Tracy, and Tom and Jackie - are actively involved with the farm. The entire family enjoys showing Walk-Era cattle, including Dean and Dori’s seven grandchildren. 2015 Herds of Excellence Ever-Green-View Farms, Thomas Kestell, Waldo 5-Year Honoree • 76.4% Homebred Average Classification Score: 83.8 ME Averages: 36,402M 1,555F 1,133P “If your goal is to be average, you’ll never achieve that,” Tom Kestell says. “Our goal is not a high herd average - our goal is to do everything right and let the results speak for themselves.” Nevertheless, the statistics also speak clearly about the high quality of this Herd of Excellence. This is the fifth year the farm has received the honor. Kestell himself was named one of four 2014 Master Agriculturists in Wisconsin. Ever-Green-View Farms’ main focus is on genetics, which make up 75 percent of their farm income, mostly from embryos. In 2014, the merchandised 2,600 embryos to several countries around the world, and this year they hope to sell more. They also merchandise young heifers, bulls and milking animals. Tom was twice awarded the Governor’s Export Award. Last year he exported 1,300 embryos to a farm in Russia with which he has a joint venture embryo facility. In April he traveled to the dairy summit in Harbin, China. In 2000 Tom launched the Embryo Share program to help local Junior Holstein members and established dairy producers improve their herds. His Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET, who set a new world record in 2009 of 72,190 pounds of milk (a record still standing today), was a product of the embryo share program. The Kestells’ top cow family traces back to Ever-Green-View Elsie-ET 2E-92 GMD DOM, a stellar cow and the granddam of My 1326-ET. One of Elsie’s great-grandsons, Flevo Genetics Snowman-ET, is a top TPI bull. Tom believes in Snowman because he likes the way his daughters breed back easily and flush at an early age; they produce tremendous amounts of milk with high components and low cell counts. He also uses two bulls that are siring a new wave of Holsteins, Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul-ET and GenerVations Epic. Tom and his wife, Gin, are forming an LLC to pass on the dair to the next generation: their son Chris and Chris’ wife Jennifer. They milk 90 Registered Holsteins 3x a day in a tie-stall barn. The rolling herd average is 41,500 pounds of milk, 1,694 pounds of fat and 1,293 pounds of protein. An additional 40 cows are kept as dry donors. Chris, Jennifer and their son Will, born in March, live on the nearby homestead farm. Tom credits the attitude of Chris and the other employees at Ever-Green-View Farms for its accomplishments.
The Kestells - Chris, Gin, Jennifer and Tom
The dairy is enrolled in Enlight and is on COMPLETE. They classify regularly: the Kestells’ BAA is 110.9, which is top in the nation for herds of 115 animals or more.

On that size, every calf counts. “We’re so small that every possible pregnancy is very exciting and very important,” says Amanda. Their five children share in the excitement. “If Mom isn’t in the barn, the kids won’t have that interest. The fact that we all love it and the kids love it, it keeps making it worth it.” She and Steve started out farming 15 years ago with a dream to market genetics, and gradually turned their grade herd into an all-Registered herd. They participate in Holstein COMPLETE, use EASY ID and Holstein Tag ID, and classify every seven months. Today, the Killians breed for type and components. They flush their best cows and use the rest as recipients. The use almost all young genomic sires, such as Mr Mogul Delta 1427-ET, EDG Ruby Mogul 1336, De-Su Bkm McCutchen and Woodcrest Mogul Yoder-ET. They were skeptical about genomics when they first emerged but were gradually won over, especially when they started flushing the first embryos from their Dirt-Road Goldwyn Cami-ET. “It became clear that was what the market was going to demand.” Cami herself is the daughter of Castleholm T Carlo-ET, one of their early good cows, from a flush to Braedale Goldwyn. “Cami’s daughter, Dirt-Road Shottle Cinderella, is the best we have had. And her offspring are the best, like Dirt-Road Gerard Cleopatra, who has been in the Top 100 Females for two years and has made some really nice daughters.” Amanda grew up in a large family headed by a single mother who farmed. After Amanda’s first date with Steve, he showed up two days later with a pitchfork to clean out her calf pen. “I never saw anyone who worked so selflessly, so hard, with such joy. That’s how he is about all his work. He just loves what he does.” They bough her mother’s bare-bones farm and with a lot of hard work and little money, they built a thriving genetics business. “Flushing and buying the best semen supported our visiton and our dream, and that has made a big difference in our success,” Amanda says. She also gives credit to friends and others in the industry who encouraged them along the way.

Wisconsin Holstein Futurity est. 1890
The one-of-a-kind Wisconsin Holstein Futurity began when Klaas Koopmans of Darien, Wis., discovered the idea of a Futurity by reading about the success of an Ohio Futurity in a Holstein World article. The show was first advertised in 1984 as the Governor’s Holstein Futurity, but by 1987 Pabst Brewery had stepped in to add $1,000 to the first place animal’s purse. With this significant donation, the show became known as the Pabst Holstein Futurity. Dairymen were encouraged to enter calves born between September 1, 1983 and August 31, 1984 in hopes that as a three-year-old milking female she would win the Futurity. Four entry payments totaling $20 were made over the three year period to maintain a purse for the winning entries. In 1987 there were 18 Registered Holsteins in the class, with John McKittrick from Columbus, Ohio, serving as the official. The winning entry was Indianhead Chief Jessica-ET, exhibited by Bob and Karyn Schauf, Indianhead Holsteins, of Barron, Wis. The Schauf ’s took home $1,588 that year. For the next ten years, Pabst Brewing Company was a generous sponsor with the winning entry receiving a $1,000 prize. In 1996, Alto Dairy Cooperative stepped in as the major donor for first place at $1250, with the Southern Chevy Dealers contributing an added $500 to second place, and Mount Horeb Implement donating $250 to the third place animal’s purse. In 1999, the second place purse money was taken over by International Protein Sires. In 2008, Saputo sponsored the show. In 2010, the 1st place winner was awarded $1,500 by Badgerland Financial, who also gave an additional $1,000 to cover expenses. Today, Badgerland Financial continues to be the first place sponsor, awarding the winner with a $1,500 check. International Protein Sires provides $750 for second place, and Agropur awards the third place winner with a $500 check. The Jeanette Bohnhoff award was started in 1995 to recognize the highest placing junior owned and shown animal. The top junior award was taken over by Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys of Dodgeville, in 2000 and continues to be sponsored by Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys and the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Although over the years the number of Registered Holsteins exhibited has fluctuated and the award sponsors have all changed, one thing has remained the same, the purpose of this elegant event. The purpose of the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is to help promote our dairy industry to the general public and display the care and dedication that we have for our animals and the products they produce. The Wisconsin Holstein Futurity was initiated to promote the Registered Holstein and dairy industry in a setting that would be to inform people that are not from a farm or agriculture background. Dairy Royalty from Dane and Green counties attend the event to help
engage the crowd with the show. As they walk through the audience they ask them dairy related questions. Questions range from what breed is the black and white cow to what percentage of dairy farms are family owned and operated in Wisconsin. Audience members who answer a question correctly are given a coupon for the Wisconsin Products Pavilion Grilled Cheese Stand, a tasty treat for all State Fair attendees. Along with the Dane and Green county royalty, there are a number of other dignitaries in attendance each year. These include the award sponsors, Alice in Dairyland, Wisconsin’s Fairest of the Fair, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess and Princess Attendant, Secretary of Agriculture, and most recently the Wisconsin Red and White Dairy Cattle Association Princess has joined in on the festivities. Before the show begins all of the dignitaries and special guests are welcomed to the ring. They enter the ring in a convertible as a biography is read about each individual. When the show first started, and for a number of years following, the dignitaries entered the ring in a horse drawn wagon to start the show off in a classic manner. Even though the event only lasts about an hour, it takes months of planning leading up to the show to ensure that everything will run smoothly. There is a Futurity Committee that formed before the first show and consisted of just five members; today the committee has over 20 members that continue to help the summer intern plan the annual event. Cheryl Ehrke has been a member of the committee since day one. She says “I think holding the Futurity at the State Fair is a great way to showcase our cattle to the general public by making it more interesting for them than watching a bunch of people dressed in white walk their animals around the ring. It’s a way to make educating them more interesting and a way to draw them into the coliseum to learn a little more about dairy cattle.” Along with serving on the committee, Cheryl has helped to decorate

the ring, her family has exhibited animals in the show, and she even made the first banner. “I made the first banner we used and remember trying to come up with a way to change the year on it so it could be used multiple years,” Ehrke recalls. The Wisconsin Holstein Futurity has always been a formal event. Exhibitors are required to wear formal attire that can include a tuxedo or ball gown as they compete for the award of Best Dressed Junior, Best Dressed Female, and Best Dressed Male. These awards are judged by the dignitaries attending the show and receive a cash award along with a plaque. Other special awards include the Best Udder, Milk Production, and Fat and Protein Production. These awards were started in 1989 when a cash award of $50 went to Indianhead Mattador Joyful exhibited by Indianhead Holsteins for being named Best Udder of the Show. That year the production awards were both received by Kayser Chaplin Corine, exhibited by Alvin and Barb Kayser of Janesville, Wis. The Wisconsin Holstein Futurity continues to be one of the most exciting shows of the summer. Exhibitors have been preparing for the event for the past three years and to showcase their bovine beauties in the coliseum at the Wisconsin State Fair is a true honor. We look forward to continuing this WHA tradition in years to come.

NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Dear Holstein Breeders, The Holstein Association USA board of directors last met at the 130th Annual meeting in St. Charles, Ill. For those who attended that convention, I think you would all agree that Illinois did a marvelous job hosting the annual gathering. Since that time, it has been largely business as usual for the Association. Our next board meeting is slated for Fresno, Calif., in November. Through July, Holstein Complete continues to show growth compared to the same time last year. There were 23,288 additional cows enrolled in the all-encompassing program to bring the total to 311,659 cows in 1,852 herds. Those herd totals were up as well over last year. Following a similar pattern, there were 30,804 additional cows in Tri-Star Premier bringing Holstein cows on the top plan to 360,764. Registrations also were four percent of pace with 218,790 animals registered. On the flip side, herd classifications and the SET program was slightly off last year’s trajectory, down 6 and 1 percent respectively. Transfers were down as well. For those who will be headed to Madison, Wis., for World Dairy Expo, you might want to arrive early for the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) industry meeting. It will take place on Tuesday, September 29 from 8:30 to 3:30 at the Madison Marriott West Hotel in Middleton, Wis. During the once-a-year, open-to-the public meeting, the service bureau for U.S. genetic evaluations will give updates on dairy cattle breeding research and its business activities. Specific topics will include: • Sire procurement after genomics • Importance of enhancing phenotypes in the genomic era • Genomics and breed composition • Using genomics as a management tool. It is our pleasure to represent you on the national Holstein board. If you have questions or concerns, we’d appreciate hearing from you. We also congratulate Boyd Schaufelberger, a fellow Midwesterner, on being elected Vice-President. Your National Directors, Paul Buhr Dale Drendel Corey Geiger Mark Kerndt

Holstein USA Elite Performers
For a cow to qualify for the Elite PerformerTM award, she must meet the following criteria to be considered: • complete at least three lactations in a herd participating in Holstein Association USA's TriStar program, completing the most recent lactation in the previous calendar year • 87% RHA or higher and classified VG-85 or higher Eligible cows across the country are ranked based on pounds of combined fat and protein per day in milk. The top one percent receive the National Elite Performer award. Those National Elite Performers are then removed from consideration and the top one percent of eligible cows from each of the nine regions are honored as Regional Elite Performers. All cows currently enrolled in TriStarSM are automatically evaluated annually. Elite Performer recognition is a lifetime award and is printed on a cow’s pedigree, found underneath her milk production records. Read more about the Elite Performer award in the recent issue of the Holstein Pulse.

2015 John Klossner Trophy Winner
Elizabeth Endres of Waunakee, Wis., was awarded the second John Klossner Trophy at this year’s Wisconsin Junior State Fair. This award was created to recognize the overall winner of the Junior Dairy Premier Exhibitor Contest at WI Junior State Fair. The contest covers four events: judging, quiz, skillathon and showmanship. These contests take place over several days during State Fair, with winners in each segment recognized with an overall winner. John excelled in this competition and had been the high individual in the judging and skillathon portions of the contest before his accident at the 2013 fair. With this honor, Lizi received a traveling trophy, custom designed to create a fitting representation of the contest and tribute to John. Lizi is the 20-year-old daughter of Steve and Kathy Endres. She is currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in dairy science. In 2014, she was accepted into the Food Animal Veterinary Medical Scholars (FAVeMedS) Program, which is an early admission program into the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. On campus, she is a member of the Association of Women in Agriculture, Badger Dairy Club, the collegiate dairy judging team, and is a research assistant in the Hernandez Laboratory, which studies metabolic factors affecting hypocalcemia.
2015 Great Northern Cup Winner
Elizabeth Sarbacker of Verona, Wis., took home the Great Northern Cup at the 2015 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. An award that honors a Junior Holstein exhibitor who excels in sportsmanship, leadership, cooperation with officials and fellow exhibitors, this year’s cup winner provides these qualities and more when it comes to the Holstein show ring. Elizabeth is the 20-year-old daughter of Tom and Vicki Sarbacker. She grew up on Fischerdale Holsteins, a 65-cow Registered Holstein farm north of Paoli in Dane County. Elizabeth is a sophomore at UWMadison studying dairy science. In 2014, she was 9th in the WI State Fair Premier Exhibitor contest and WI State Fair Reserve Supreme Champion Show Person. She was also a member of the 4-H dairy judging team that traveled to Harrisburg, PA, to compete in the 2014 All-American Dairy Judging contest. The Great Northern Cup is sponsored by Great Northern Land and Cattle Company, Inc., in Fond du Lac, Wis.
