Obituaries Earl Grenzow

Earl G. Grenzow, age 91, of Monroe, formerly of Juda, died on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was born on April 15, 1925 in Juda, the son of George and Sylvia (Trumpy) Grenzow. Earl and Georgia Quincy were married on August 15, 1959 in Platteville. Earl farmed in the Juda area his entire life, raising Registered Holsteins, moving to Monroe in 2001. He was a member of the Juda Zion United Methodist Church and the Holstein Friezen Association since 1947. He is survived by his wife, Georgia of Monroe; daughter, Karen Grenzow of Monroe; sons, John (Mary Jane) Grenzow and Kevin (Deanna) Grenzow both of Monroe; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Ann Schou of Rockford and Grace Harder of Cherry Valley, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Wendell.

Hello Everyone! The harvest season is in full swing and hopefully yields are plentiful and that mother nature has cooperated. 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the greatest dairy show on earth, World Dairy Expo. This year’s show promises to be one for the ages. We all owe such a massive debt of gratitude to the founders for having the foresight to build and event in our home state that is the international gathering place for dairy enthusiasts. Stop by the WHA booth as the staff will have memorabilia from the previous 49 shows. WHA is proud to be affiliated with Expo and we are currently represented on the Expo board of directors by Paula Bovre. In addition to Paula, Wallace Behnke represented us for years and I want to thank both of them for their service. Wisconsin will be well represented in both the open and junior Holstein shows and best of luck to those that are exhibiting. It may seem like a while from now, but there are many award forms for both adults and juniors that are due by November 15. These include the Junior Trip award, the WHY friend award, the Junior Essay contest as well as Distinguished Breeder and Distinguished Young Breeder awards and the YAC Education award. The award forms can be found on the WHA website or by calling the state office. Both Dane and Calumet counties are actively preparing for the 2017 Junior and Adult conventions so be sure to get those dates on your calendar. The Junior Convention will be in Wisconsin Dells at the Glacier Canyon Lodge, January 8-10, 2017. The Adult Convention will be held February 24-25 at the Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton. WHA 2017 Summer Internship Opportunity The Wisconsin Holstein Association is searching for eager Registered Holstein enthusiasts looking to learn more about the industry and wanting to gain valuable experiences that can be utilized in any industry. Applicants attending a 2 or 4 year college are welcomed to apply. It is not required to be majoring in an Agriculture field but background in the dairy industry is preferred. Salary or Hourly: Salary w/ bonus opportunity Reports to: Executive Director & WHP Editor Travel: Up to 50% (requires a personal vehicle with gas mileage reimbursement) Date: May 22-August 18, 2017 (some weekends required) Location: Baraboo, WI

Major Duties & Responsibilities: Event Planning • Attend all WHA sponsored summer events and other county Holstein events. These include the WHA State Championship Show, Showmanship and Judging Contest, Junior State Fair Holstein Show, WHA Futurity and Open State Fair Holstein Show. Intern may also be asked to attend District Shows around the state when needed. • Work with WHA committees to plan events such as the 2017 WHA Futurity, State and District Shows, State Picnic and more. This may include inputing and finalizing show entries, organizing awards, volunteers and other details such as mailings and dignitary needs. • Organize show booklets, meals, send correspondence before and after an event and archive final placing results. Public Relations • Ability to communicate to all areas of the Association in a timely manner • Assist in any communication materials needed for members or external media such as pamphlets, letters, bios and entry forms • Work with external sponsors as it pertains to awards, signage and coordination of events • Build valuable partnerships with industry partners Web, Print and More • Write press releases announcing upcoming events and summarizing placings and/or winnings. • Compile and publish updated marketing materials on WHA website such as press releases, entry forms, event details and imagery. • Take photos of event winners when needed to post online and share with Editor. This will require the creation of an archive for year-end presentations. • Interview Wisconsin Holstein breeders and write profile articles as assigned by the Editor; this may require taking photos for the article. • Write articles of interest for the WI Holstein News and website as well as identify potential roundtable discussions for the News. • Opportunity to learn database management and design e-newsletter creative.

Thoughts from the 2016 Intern, Jessica Steger

I cannot believe this summer is over! I never imagined on the first day of walking into the office that I would experience so many different things this summer. All of the things I learned and got to do this summer lead me to have an unforgettable experience. This summer was filled with numerous event across our great dairy state. Traveling to many parts of the state allowed me to meet with countless members and their Holsteins at district shows and state show. This summer not only offered me the opportunity to meet our members, but it also allowed me to meet consumers and their children. We had two events this summer geared toward youth, Kids Express Learning Center’s “Dairy Day” and a library visit with a cow and calf. Bringing a cow and calf into a library was definitely something I did not expect on the first day, but it was a great learning experience for all involved. I wrapped up the summer with three weekends of shows, the Wisconsin State Championship Show Series, the Wisconsin Junior State Fair, and the Wisconsin State Fair Open Show and Wisconsin Holstein Association Futurity. It was a busy and incredible three weeks. The 30th annual Wisconsin Holstein Futurity was the most anticipated event of the summer for me. I did not realize the amount of detail that went into the Futurity until I was in the middle of coordinating it. I never would have guessed it would take ten trips to different stores just for ribbon. I am excited to say that in the end we had 17 three-year-olds competing for the top prize. I want to first and foremost thank the staff at WHA for all of their patience and help along the way. They are truly an invaluable resource to our association, and I cannot thank them enough for everything this summer. I would also like to thank everyone in the association. Meeting and speaking with many of you about our beloved Holsteins was a highlight of my summer. I cannot wait to see many of you again at the shows throughout the coming year. I would also like to thank the WHA Board of Directors and JACs for always being there for a good laugh or offering a helping hand. I would like to thank the Futurity committee for all of their help and dedication. I would finally like to thank Kati Kindschuh and Paige Nelson for the numerous laughs and adventures we shared this summer. I will always remember this opportunity and its numerous lessons.

Holstein Junior Show August 5 & 6 • West Allis, WI

The Wisconsin Junior State Fair Holstein show was held on Thursday and Friday, August 5 and 7 at the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis. Judge Joey Airosa of Pixley, Cal., and Associate Judge Jeff Brantmeier of Sherwood, Wis., placed a total of 402 head of Holsteins over the two day show, including 214 calves, 159 yearlings and 29 cows. The Red & White show had 74 head participating in that show. Selected as Senior and Grand Champion of the Holstein Show was Mapel Wood Windhammer Elegance exhibited by Whitney Ebert. Reserve Champion went to Siemers Braxton Marabel-ET exhibited by Jake Siemers. Judge Airosa commented that the winning Junior 3-Year-Old was really “on the mark. You have to love that length, the capacity of udder and her great breed character in the front end. She’s one that is going to just keep getting better.” Winning Calf Champion honors was Aaliyah Borchert’s winter calf, Tree-Hayven Integral Declan. Judge Airosa was impressed with the group pulled out for Calf Champion and commented that the winter calf “is a beautifully framed heifer and there’s really not that much wrong with her. She’s so correct, so balanced. She has that great breed character through her head and neck and lots of style and strength.” He gave her the advantage over the Reserve Champion by being a little more correct in the rump structure, but loved the “beautiful framed calf with so much style, that follows the white calf nicely.” Reserve Calf Champion was Budjon-Vail Sid Sydney-ET, also a winter calf, exhibited by Allison Breunig. Jenifer Krull took home Yearling and Junior Champion honors with Craig-Kro Hammer Jammer. Reserve Junior Champion was Roseanne Crave’s spring yearling, Crave Atwood anna 9121-ET, also the Reserve Yearling Champion. Judge Airosa said the group pulled out for Yearling Champion was “the kind I like and are all ones that are sound heifers and are going to make good cows.” He said for champion, “It was splitting hairs, but this fall yearling is one whale of a heifer. She has that width from the tip of her nose all the way to her rear end. She has an advantage over the spring yearling in that she’s a little more powerful in the front end, deeper in the fore rib and a little wider made. But I will grant the spring yearling has the most size and scale for her age out her today.” The showmanship started the dairy show on Thursday with almost 500 youth taking part in the different age groups. Several Wisconsin Junior Holstein members won their respective age groups, with Karlee Ketelboeter being named the overall Supreme Champion Showman. Congratulations to all the youth that participated at the State Fair and thank you to the many farms and individuals that sponsored the first and second place trophies for the Holstein Show. NATIONAL DIRECTOR’S REPORT Dear Holstein Breeders, In June, the center of the Holstein world was in charming Saratoga Springs, New York. Our annual meeting and convention were special in every way, thanks to our great New York hosts. The convention sale was spectacular and the keynote speaker made it clear that the pace of the genetic change will not slow down. Retiring board members were recognized, including our director atlarge, Corey Geiger, from Wisconsin. New directors elected include Peter Dueppengiesser of New York, Steve Keene of Maine, and Benjamin Newberry of Georgia. Iowa’s Mark Kerndt was re-elected to the board. Recognized as the 2016 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder was Joe Loehr of Calvary, Wisconsin. The Type Committee report was highlighted by the recommendation that stature be de-emphasized by reducing correlations between stature and udder. The Genetic Advancement Committee featured the updated version of the Body Composite Index, which more accurately predicts the body weight of the animal, therefore making the Feed Efficiency Index more precise. A new trait evaluation was launched - Livability. This is the ability of an animal to stay alive and will be displayed as a percentage representing the offspring’s deviation from the average. Being able to sell an animal for salvage versus the time and expense of dealing with dead animals is a significant economic factor. This new trait will be assessed as to its importance and whether it will be included in the TPI formula in the future. The effectiveness of the current TPI formula was displayed in the report, showing that the ranking of cows by CTPI does predict their lifetime profitability. The recent fertility increases in Holsteins was also highlighted. Stature was mentioned by GAC as an issue, with the intent of addressing the rate of increase in stature immediately. Nutrition Notes... by Ryan Pralle Transition cows are cool. Seriously, at what other point in time does an adult cow undergo so many impactful changes? Cows start as dry, pregnant “couch potatoes” and within a few weeks become high-producing athletes. To facilitate this dynamic transition, a huge, coordinated biological shift occurs throughout a number of systems, including nutrient metabolism, feeding behavior, rumen microbiology, and mammary gland development. However, the multitude of changes puts cows at an increased risk of inadequately coordinating their biology. This can result in all too familiar fresh cow complications like metritis, milk fever, ketosis, fatty liver, and displaced abomasum. All of these health complications have been demonstrated to be detrimental to cow performance and producers’ wallets. The research group that I am part of, led by Dr. Heather White, at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, is fascinated with the physiological changes that occur during the transition period. Particularly, we are interested in the differences between healthy, well-transitioned cows and cows that experience ketosis and fatty liver. These metabolic disorders are considered comorbid, which means that they occur together. This happens in response to the same underlying cause, negative energy balance. Transition cows experience negative energy balance after calving when they are unable to consume enough dietary energy to sustain milk production. With a cow’s energy requirement able to triple after calving, it is common for fresh cows to experience some level of negative energy balance. To adapt, cows will mobilize stored energy, primarily body fat, in order to support milk production. Extreme negative energy balance results in excessive mobilization, which can overwhelm the liver in lipids that need to be metabolized. This can result in the build up of ketone bodies in the blood (ketosis) and the accumulation of fat in the liver (fatty liver). These disorders are particularly difficult to manage because they are predominately subclinical. About 50 percent of dairy cows experience liver fat accumulation. However, a definitive diagnosis can only be achieved by liver fat content analysis of a liver biopsy sample. This makes fatty liver particularly

difficult to evaluate on dairy farms. Ketosis can be monitored routinely with blood BHBA meters, urine and milk strips, and milk powder. However, constant monitoring is time consuming and requires extra animal handling. The work I am part of in Dr. White’s research group is centered on ascertaining the risk individual cows have for these disorders and conveniently identifying cows experiencing them. Our approach is multidisciplinary utilizing innovative methods in the fields of genomics, bioinformatics, advanced statistical modeling, and molecular biology. These new methods will give us insight into the integrated biology behind the progression of these disorders and help dairy producers reduce the labor intensiveness of monitoring fresh cows. Furthermore, it could open doors to implementing targeted, preventative management strategies with fresh cows. Fustead Holsteins Welcomes Guests for the Wisconsin Holstein Picnic The Brian and Wendy Fust family of Wausau, Wis., welcomed nearly 350 guests for the annual Wisconsin Holstein State Picnic, held Saturday, August 27 at Fustead Holsteins. It was a brisk day, but there was plenty of Holstein enthusiasm through the barns and in the camaraderie of breeders in attendance. The day kicked off with the dairy judging contest and an opportunity for spectators to view some select females from the herd. The Fusts had outstanding daughters by Guthrie, McCutchen, Doorman, AltaOak, Montross, Mogul, Shot Al, Bookem, and more. Visitors could also view the free stall barn, parlor and holding areas. A tailgate style lunch was served before the program kicked off. WHA Board President Kevin Jorgensen and Breed Improvement Committee Chair Craig Carncross welcomed the crowd and introduced the Fust family. One of the highlights of the afternoon was the scholarship auction, which was held to benefit the Brad Fust and WHA Scholarship funds. More than $13,000 was raised to benefit the fund, which awarded over $16,000 in scholarships in 2016 to graduating high school and college students. Calumet County CP Feeds Futurity

The second annual Calumet County CP Feeds Futurity was declared a huge success by both the exhibitors and spectators. Over 600 people gathered at the 2016 Calumet County Fair Harder-Goeldi building to observe the “Futurity” on Sunday, September 4, 2016. The Calumet County Holstein Breeders who produce the “Futurity” were thrilled with the results. Seventeen Holsteins and one Brown Swiss paraded in front of Judge Ryan Krohlow of Poynette, Wis. The winning entry of the highly competitive three year old cow “Futurity” was Dreamhaven Dempsey Rumchata exhibited by Krista Luedtke of Hortonville, Wis. In second place was Top Acres Garbro S Wish-ET exhibited by Jennifer Meyer of Jenlar Holsteins and Brown Swiss of Chilton, Wis. The Best Udder and Best Bred and Owned were awarded to Krista Luedtke. The Production Award went to Hilrose Dairy LLC of Sherwood. Best Dressed Male was a tie between Jeff Brantmeier of Sherwood and Mitch Krahn of Brillion. Best Dressed Female was awarded to Jennifer Meyer of Chilton. Over $5,000.00 was paid in prize monies to the exhibitors at the 2016 futurity. The 2016 Outagamie County Holstein Futurity sponsored by the Family Insurance Center was held on Saturday, July 30 at the Fairgrounds in Seymour, Wis. Minnesota Holstein Association Field Day Jenn Landman, greeted individuals as they arrived and handed out the judging cards along with the option of taking with them the newest edition of the Minnesota Holstein News. Currently, the brothers are milking 130 cows and have 110 head of young stock. They milk in a free stall barn that was just built as of last year. Along with the Boumatic double 8 parallel walk-in parlor, a holding pen with a walkway, maternity pens, which is where the judging classes were held, and eight calf pens to the side of it, and a 132 stall, tunnel ventilated free stall barn, they also put up a new dry cow shed and hay shed. Overall, the Beraneks are thrilled with their new set-up.

George, Minnesota – Perry, Gary, and Chris Beranek and the Beranek Brothers Dairy Farm warmly welcomed Minnesota Holstein Association members and Holstein enthusiasts to their farm on Saturday, July 23 for the annual Holstein Field Day. Judging classes, socialization, a farm transition speaker, and a great meal of grilled pork burgers provided by the Nicollet County Pork Producers made it a day where everyone in attendance was proud to be a part of. Registration kicked off at 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch and the judging classes. Minnesota Holstein Association Executive Secretary,

As mentioned before, the meal provided was delicious! Everyone filled up on pork burgers, baked beans, chips, refreshments, and ice cream. The special guest of the day was Myron Oftdahl who spoke about farm and money management. The official judge of the judging contest was MN Holstein board member, Matt Timmer. Prizes were awarded to the top individuals for both the men, women, and youth division. In the youth division, first place was awarded to Alex Schroeder and second place was tied to Jasenko Gavranovic and Jacob Pehrson. For the women’s division, Ruth Klossner won the first place award and Bernice Vander Wal was awarded the second place award. As for the men’s division, first place was awarded to Patrick Rusch and second place to Andy Steinhagen. Thank you to all who participated in the judging contest! We’ d like to say thank you to the local businesses which sponsored the delicious meal. Additionally, thank you to everyone who attended and took part in the Minnesota Holstein Field Day and to the Beranek’s for hosting this years field day. The weather was beautiful even with the little bit of rain, the day was a success and we look forward to next year!

Judging this prestigious event was Brian Behnke of Brooklyn, Wis. In this non-traditional show, the animals are entered three years prior to the show and only the best of the entries compete for the coveted title. This year the Futurity title was captured by Ernest-Anthony Sid Amelia, owned by Crescentmead Holsteins and shown by Sarah Wendorf of Ixonia, Wis. The Wendorf family received $1500 from our generous sponsor, Badgerland Financial. Amelia was also named Best Udder of the show and the Top Fat and Protein production winner. Following closely in second was Ryan-Vu Regin Raz A Taz, owned by Chad and Mark Ryan, Majestic View, and Crailoo Dairy Farm, and shown by Amy Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wis. Raz A Taz won a $750 check from International Protein Sires. She was also named the first place Bred and Owned animal. In third place was Rob-Cri Dempsey Secret, exhibited by Gracelyn Jo Breitenstein of Plover, Wis. Agropur presented Gracelyn and Secret with a check for $500. Gracelyn was also presented with the first place Junior award, sponsored by Angela Davis-Brown of Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys and $50 from the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. With the bovine beauties truly looking their best, the exhibitors are also dressed to impress for this show. These exhibitors put away their jeans and boots for a night of ball gowns and tuxedos to compete for the Best Dressed awards. All the exhibitors were looking their best and truly impressed the crowd. The Best Dressed Junior award and $100, sponsored by Frisle-Vu Holsteins, went to Nicole Wright from Watertown, Wis. Levi Kindshi of Loganville, Wis., received the Best Dressed Male award and $100 from Indianhead Holsteins. The Best Dressed Female of the night went to Courtney Ewert of Hustisford, Wis., along with $100 sponsored by Scenic-Edge Holsteins. The night was led by the master and mistress of ceremonies, Tim Natzke and Kristin Olson, who introduced distinguished guests and the bovine beauties. Distinguished guests for this year’s event included Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Kati Kindschuh; Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant Paige Nelson; Alice in Dairyland Ann O’Leary; Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs Gloria Kesler; National Red and White Queen Mckenna Coffeen; and Green County and Dane County Royalty. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Futurity is a very unique show with a unique mission. The Wisconsin Holstein Association uses the futurity to help promote the dairy industry to the general public, display the first class care dairy farmers provide for their animals and show the dedication that we have for our animals and the products they produce. In the event however, that any condition should arise which prevents the showing of the Futurity, the right is reserved to cancel same and refunds made to persons owning females that have been nominated, their share of all monied accrued after the deduction of actual expenses in the promotion of the Futurity. SALE OF ELIGIBLE ANIMALS: When an animal that is entered in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity is sold, the eligibility may be transferred to the new owner, and it shall be his responsibility to inform the Futurity Committee of the change of ownership. To aid in this, exhibitors will receive an entry certificate for each animal after entry payment has been received. New owners will need to sign an entry form after notification of entry into Futurity. OPEN CLASS SHOWING: If the show is held at the Wisconsin State Fair, all animals shown in the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity are eligible upon proper entry to be shown in the open class competition of the Holstein Show. It is the responsibility of the animalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s owner to fill out the necessary forms for open class competition. MISCELLANEOUS: Neither the Wisconsin Holstein Association nor the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity Committee is in any way responsible for the condition of the premises in which the Futurity is held and is not liable in the event of accident or loss of persons or property. All matter pertaining to the showing of the Futurity are subject to the rules, regulations and health requirements of any WI Holstein Association sponsored show along with those for the show at which the Futurity is held. DRESS CODE: Every exhibitor must have formal dress to show in the Futurity. (Minimum requirements for men include a shirt, tie and dress pants while women should wear a dress, business suit or the equivalent.) Exhibitors not meeting the minimum dress code requirement will be denied entry into the show ring. PURPOSE: To stimulate interest in the breeding and exhibiting of outstanding Officially Identified Holsteins of 87% RHA or higher. To promote the Registered Holstein breed and dairy industry to the general public with an appealing and memorable presentation. PROCEDURES: An animal is nominated by an owner. All nominations are the responsibility of the owner. Dates, fees and rules will be followed to the letter. ELIGIBILITY: Any Registered Holstein female that was born September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016 is eligible for the 2019 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Owners of the animal being shown must be a paid member by May 31 of the year of the show and those leading the animal must be at least 12 years old by the day of the show. FEES: Entries, along with $35 per animal, must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2016. Late entries will be accepted until April 30, 2017 for $50 per animal and late fee of $100 per animal will be accepted until August 15, 2017. Full entry fees must accompany entry form or sent within the appropriate time noted above. PURSE: The purse in this event shall consist of all monies received by the Wisconsin Holstein Futurity (plus interest earned) as nomination fees, less the actual expenses incurred in its promotion and management. All Futurity monies shall be kept in a separate Futurity Fund and used only for Futurity purposes. The purse in this event will be divided among the first forty Futurity placings as follows: 1st place winner - 15% plus sponsorship monies 2nd .........12% Next ten places ............2% each 3rd ............9% Next ten places .........1.5% each 4th ............8% Next fifteen places .......1% each 5th ............6% (If 100% of purse money is not distributed by above breakdown, the balance will be split equally amongst all participants.) The late Henry “Sonny” Bartel’s Hi-Path Farm had a banner day at the Central National Show in 1973, as he captured Grand Champion Bull and Cow honors in the Dane County Coliseum. Wataview Mark Babe was the top four-year-old cow of the show in a class of 23 Holsteins, and went on to be named Grand over Wisconsin favorite, Gene-Acres Felicia May Fury. A total of 242 Holsteins paraded the ring for Judge Fred Foreman of Iowa, assisted by Associate Judge Donald Collins, New York. With a tremendous amount of cow power, Wisconsin also took home State Herd honors for the show.

All-American Aged Cow 1973-1974 Reserve All-American 1972 7-07 3x 365d 32,176 4.2% 1350F Lifetime: 4,740d 227,830M 4.1% 9,369F Felicia May was the pride and joy of Allen Hetts’ herd. She was purchased from Mulder Farm in Milton, and was Reserve All-American four times prior to becoming the All-American Aged Cow in 1973-74. She also set a Wisconsin milk record by production 32,471M and 1215F at five years of age. Felicia May had four records over 30,000 pounds milk and 1200 pounds fat. In 1973, owner Allen Hetts became victimized by cancer and died on November 14, 1973 at 52 years of age. Felicia May was named Grand at Allen’s show (World Dairy Expo) a year after his death in 1974. Over 40 years later people still compare cows to “May,” lovingly referred to as “everyone’s sweetheart.” There were 349 Holsteins exhibited at the 1974 Central National Show in Madison, with 15 states and Canada represented. The aged cow class was ‘a sight to behold,’ with the drama of the moment bringing a hush of attentiveness from the spectators. The judge deliberated over three daughters of Fury, with Felicia May working her way to the top as the ‘longterm dairy machine.’ His choice brought resounding applause as the crowd rejoiced with the Hetts family and other members of Felicia May Associates, her owners. “The cow who does it all” was Best Udder, Type and Production winner, highest producing cow, Senior and Grand Champion Female before taking Supreme Champion honors. In May of 1975 the Hetts’ herd was dispersed, and Gene-Acres Felicia May Fury topped the sale. She sold for $80,000, which at the time, was the second highest selling Registered Holstein female of all time in North America. Felicia May had 12 daughters that were either Very Good or Excellent, with several daughters producing over 100,000 pounds of milk lifetime. The Wisconsin sweetheart, Felicia May held a special place in the hearts of Holstein enthusiasts years after her World Dairy Expo victory.

the pinnacle twice. Just one of two Wisconsin-owned and developed beauties to take the supreme title twice in her career, Vandyk-K Integrity Paradise called Rosedale Genetics, Ltd. home. As a four-year-old, Paradise took her first parade across the colored shavings under the spotlight, a moment truly celebrated by the team of Mark Rueth & Kent Van Dyk. When she was able to repeat in 2002, it was truly a special moment for the Rosedale team, as it was the first championship originating from their farm. Paradise left a very special mark in the Rosedale herd, as her clone, Paradise 2, was named Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2005. Paradise 4 was also an influence in the herd, and she and Paradise 2 had daughters by September Storm and Dundee. Paradise herself had beautiful Gibson and Linjet daughters. Owner Mark Rueth seems to have an eye for the show-winning kind, as he later developed Redrose, the first Red and White Holstein to earn Supreme Champion honors at the big show. He and wife Nicky welcomed their first daughter to the family in late spring, lovingly naming her “Paradise Rose” after the undeniable Holstein beauties that came before her. While Paradise is in her final resting place at Rosedale, her legacy will live on through those that came after her.

Cow 2007 Global R&W Cow of the Year 2006 All-American 5-Year-Old 2005 Grand Champion, World Dairy Expo 2005 Reserve All-Wisconsin 4-Year-Old 2004 Reserve Senior Champion, World Dairy Expo 2004 All-Wisconsin Junior 2-Year-Old 2002 Lifetime: 245,845M 4.5% 10,505F 3.3% 8170P Perhaps one of the greatest Red and White Holstein cows of all time, Lavender Ruby Redrose-Red became a household name after winning the International Red and White Holstein Show and becoming the first Red and White to take Supreme Champion honors at World Dairy Expo in 2005. Redrose was one of the

founding ladies at Rosedale when Mark and Nicky started farming together in 2001. A yearling at the time, she was a beautiful Rubens that needed time to develop. She was a part of the family, always a healthy and strong dairy cow, and even got to be the host of several birthday celebrations in her 14 years of life at Rosedale. Mark and Nicky let Redrose reside under the theory that ‘you’ve got to let cows be cows,’ as she roamed the farm freely each day before her passing in June of 2014. A descendant of the one and only Blackrose (Rubens x Rudolph x Leader x Blackrose), Mark felt Redrose was a more dairy version of Blackrose, with even more tremendous transmitting power. Similar to Blackrose, who did well in the ring as a two and three-year-old, Redrose was named first Junior Two-Year-Old at the 2002 Red and White Show at World Dairy Expo. In 2004 she was second place Four-year-old and Reserve Grand Champion, and she went on to claim her title of Supreme in 2005. Just as impressive was her return in 2007, when she won the 125,000 lb. class and was again named Grand Champion of the Red and White Show. Redrose had several sons in AI, with some of the most notable bulls including Rosedale Accolade-Red, Rosedale Advantage-Red and Rosedale Touchdown-Red. Her Advent daughter sold for an impressive $135,000 at the 2006 World Classic Sale. Redrose had additional daughters by Absolute, Redliner, Perseus, Sanchez, Acme, Destry and Action that all scored well and made their mark in the show ring, from champion honors to All-American nominations. Truly a family member and one the Holstein world won’t soon forget, the Redrose legacy will continue to live on through her outstanding offspring, just as many of the ladies that have taken these prestigious titles before her.

Frosty began her show career in 2006, being nominated All-American Senior Two-YearOld. Her nomination that year stemmed from a fifth place finish at World Dairy Expo and a win in the Senior Two-Year-Old class at Harrisburg. In 2007, Frosty was named Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show as a Senior ThreeYear-Old. onto the colored shavings in the five-year-old class at World Dairy Expo. Frosty won her class and went on to defeat the reigning Grand and Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo, Thrulane James Rose (EX-97), for Senior and Grand Champion. She also defeated the legendary Old Mill E Snickerdoodle (Brown Swiss) for Supreme Champion honors. In 2010 Frosty again graced the colored shavings at World Dairy Expo. She was the first place Aged Cow, Senior and Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show. Frosty was crowned the Supreme Champion for the second consecutive year. She was scored at six years, ten months and was raised to EX-96 2E with an EX-96 MS. Frosty was a tremendous production cow in her own right, with a 5-07 record at 2x and 365d of 40,725M with 5.0 2030F and 2.8 1138P. Her offspring include at least 11 Excellent and 22 Very Good daughters, in addition to two EX-96 sons – Federal (Semex) and Freeze (St. Jacobs). There are also two clones of Frosty, scored EX-95 and EX-92. Frosty passed away peacefully at 12 years of age at Duckett Holsteins home in Rudolph, Wis., in January of this year. There is no doubt her impact will be felt in the Duckett’s herd for years to come.

Katrysha has garnered an impressive list of show winnings, including Grand Champion honors of both the International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo and the Wisconsin Championship Show. 20–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/October 2016

Katrysha sold through the International Intrigue Sale in 2014, where she was purchased by Butlerview. By spring of 2015, Milk Source took sole ownership of Katrysha, and the rest is history. While 2015 was a memorable year for Katrysha and Milk Source, it is not her first with AllAmerican credentials. In 2014, she was All-American and AllCanadian five-year-old, and in 2013, she was Nominated All-American as a four-year-old cow. When Katrysha hit the ring for the Supreme Champion contest on the Saturday evening of the 2015 World Dairy Expo, she was one of three cows from Milk Source Genetics in the parade, which marked the first time that a farm has accomplished this feat at the world’s greatest dairy show. Milk Source exhibited the champion Jersey, Red and White, and black and white Holstein cows. Milk Source was also Premier Exhibitor of the International Holstein Show, and Premier Breeder and Exhibitor of the Red and White Holstein show earlier in the week. The team at Milk Source Genetics knew they had a personal best in strength of the show string at World Dairy Expo, but they had no idea the week would end the way it did. Jim Ostrom, co-owner at MilkSource commented, “It’s the best string of cows we will ever work with, and we should enjoy the moment – regardless of the outcome, because they are truly spectacular.” Team Milk Source has continued to develop some of the best in the breed, and Holstein enthusiasts can look forward to the outstanding individuals that will continue to parade the colored shavings from this Kaukauna, Wis., powerhouse for years to come.

The Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Young Adult Committee will be offering monetary awards for young adults to attend educational events in 2017. With feelings of pumpkin spice, caramel apples and football in the air, it can only mean one other thing; the greatest holiday (not shown on a calendar) has arrived - World Dairy Expo! Long gone are the days of heat and humidity, rather we look to reap the benefits of our crops and put the cherry on top of the show season with all of the excitement commencing in Madison. World Dairy Expo, for many, is a time for celebration, reunion of old friends and so much more. The time spent in Madison is well worth all of the hours spent behind closed doors, working to make dreams come true. This year, we’ve had the distinct pleasure of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of World Dairy Expo, hopefully one of many great anniversaries to come of this prestigious event. This time of year is also great for reflection; looking back on the things we’ve accomplished not only this year but in the

last few years, decade or lifetime. As the seasons change, we as agriculturalists and dairy farmers look to change and evolve with this tremendous industry. World Dairy Expo allows us to get excited about cows, become energized to develop good cows for next year and continually grow. So take a moment, brew yourself a cup of coffee or tea, and sit back and think about all of the good memories made this last year. But looking back as the leaves begin to fall on the wonderful summer we’ve had, there has been lots of great memories! From State Fair to the WHA State Picnic, there has been great opportunities for Holstein fellowship. A special “thank you” to the Fust family for hosting the annual picnic at their beautiful farm in the rolling hills near Wausau. I think I speak on behalf of everyone in attendance that the cows looked great, the scholarship auction was a success and the friendly egg-toss competition was an “egg-cellent” game. Although World Dairy Expo will soon be over, that doesn’t mean the excitement stops! I am busy continuing school visits around Wisconsin, spreading the fun facts of the Holstein cow and the delicious dairy products that they provide us with. For a cow to qualify for the Elite PerformerTM award, she must meet the following criteria to be considered: • complete at least three lactations in a herd participating in Holstein Association USA's TriStar program, completing the most recent lactation in the previous calendar year • 87% RHA or higher and classified VG-85 or higher Eligible cows across the country are ranked based on pounds of combined fat and protein per day in milk. The top one percent receive the National Elite Performer award. Those National Elite Performers are then removed from consideration and the top one percent of eligible cows from each of the nine regions are honored as Regional Elite Performers. All cows currently enrolled in TriStarSM are automatically evaluated annually. Elite Performer recognition is a lifetime award and is printed on a cow’s pedigree, found underneath her milk production records.

A note from your JACs

Hey Junior Members! With the last of the county fairs wrapping up and the weather getting cooler, it is hard to believe that this summer’s show season has finally come to an end. It has been a great experience for myself and the rest of the JACs watching you show off your hard work in the show ring all summer long. Congratulations to you all on your accomplishments!! Most of you are back in school now and are gearing up for another great year ahead! Keep in mind that the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention is just around the corner - January 6-8, 2017 - in Wisconsin Dells! Get your dairy bowl teams together to practice, finish your craft projects, polish up your speeches, and get ready for some Holstein fun! I hope you all filled out your 12 & under, YMR, and DJM forms! We would like to remind you that a second round of award forms are due November 15. This includes the WHY Friend, Junior Trip, Essay contest, Long Range Production, and Progressive Breeder awards. The WHY Friend award is one we encourage you to fill out. It is a great way to recognize all the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears your advisors, parents, and leaders put into helping us juniors out with all the different activities all year round. So, don’t forget to thank them even if it is simply by nominating them for this awesome award!! For those of you who attend convention but don’t participate in the contests like dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy, we have some new activities for you this year! We will have informative and educational panel sessions running both on Friday afternoon and Saturday. There will be three different topics/sessions for all convention goers to attend! More info will come as convention gets closer, but we are very excited about this and hope you enjoy them! Lastly, for those of you older members who are interested in running for JAC at convention, feel free to ask one of the current JACs any questions that you may have! We would be glad to help! WHY Friend Applications

It’s time to recognize the junior advisor, parent or volunteer that has helped your county gain momentum in 2016. Recognition of a WHY friend is a great way to show a dedicated leader in your county that their efforts are appreciated during the year. Everyone has those special individuals that put in countless hours to help youth build their Junior Holstein program, now show your appreciation by nominating them for the WHY Friend Award by November 15, 2016.

Calf Raffle Tickets - Get them while they’re hot!

The largest fundraising effort of the year is underway for junior programs and events – the Junior Raffle! The calf this year is donated by Synergy Dairy, Jay & Heather Jauquet and Gary & Linda Olson of Pulaski, Wis. There are several additional items available from generous donations, including UW-Mens’ Badger Hockey tickets, a NASCO gift card, various semen certificates and World Dairy Expo passes. 2016 John Klossner Trophy Winner

Elise Bleck of Glenbeulah, Wis., was awarded the third John Klossner Trophy at this year’s Wisconsin Junior State Fair. This award was created to recognize the overall winner of the Junior Dairy Premier Exhibitor Contest at WI Junior State Fair. The contest covers four events: judging, quiz, skillathon and showmanship. These contests take place over several days during State Fair, with winners in each segment recognized with an overall winner. John excelled in this competition and had been the high individual in the judging and skillathon portions of the contest before his accident at the 2013 fair. With this honor, Elise received a traveling trophy, custom designed to create a fitting representation of the contest and tribute to John. Elise is the 15-year-old daughter of Dr. Jeff and Lea Ann Bleck of Glenbeulah. Elise, along with her parents and brother, Brady, live on Blecksview family farm, where they raise Holstein and Brown Swiss show cattle. Elise exhibited the 2015 All-Wisconsin Brown Swiss Winter Yearling and received reserve junior champion of the junior show. She was a member of the state champion Sheboygan County 4-H junior dairy quiz bowl team in 2015. She was also a member of the Sheboygan County Dairy judging team that placed second at the state 4-H dairy judging contest. Elise is the president of the Spring Valley 4-H Club and a member of the Sheboygan County Junior Holstein Association. She also plays basketball, volleyball and enjoys swimming and dance class.

2016 Great Northern Cup Winner

Kristen Broege of Janesville took home the Great Northern Cup at the 2016 Wisconsin Junior State Fair. An award that honors a Junior Holstein exhibitor who excels in sportsmanship, leadership, cooperation with officials and fellow exhibitors, this year’s cup winner provides these qualities and more when it comes to the Holstein show ring. Kristen Broege is the 20-year-old daughter of Phyllis and the late Steve Broege. She owns and shows Rock-Edge Holsteins with her two younger sisters, Jenna and Nicole. Currently, she is a junior at UW-Madison majoring in Dairy Science. On campus, she is involved in Badger Dairy Club, Association of Women in Agriculture, National Agri-Marketing Association and the Collegiate Dairy Judging Team. Kristen is currently serving as Chair of the Junior Activities Committee and shows at local, state and national shows. In the future she hopes to have a career in dairy business and communications. The Great Northern Cup is sponsored by Great Northern Land and Cattle Company, Inc., in Fond du Lac, Wis.

Dairy Bowl Deadlines The Dairy Bowl contest will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. The deadline to enter a team for the 2017 Dairy Bowl contest will be NOVEMBER 15, 2016. Entries must be IN OFFICE by this date or entry fees will double. The fee to enter teams will remain $10 for Rookie division and $30 for Junior and Senior divisions. Remember, FEES WILL DOUBLE if the entry form is not IN OFFICE by November 15. All potential team member names must be submitted by the November 15 deadline. Please remember, official teams do not need to be named until registration at the 2017 Junior Convention. This includes all possible team members, and there is no limit to the number of juniors that can be included on the list. Names must be included with the entry form to make a completed entry. All coaches and participating team members must be members of the Wisconsin Holstein association. Counties that have juniors wishing to participate on a Wisconsin team must submit their $5.00 entry fee by November 15. Welcome to fall! It’s that time of year again - World Dairy Expo! And this year is extra special as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of WDE. If you’ve picked up this issue of the News at our booth at WDE, I hope you’ll enjoy reading about what’s happening at Wisconsin Holstein.
