Wisconsin Holstein Briefs J At age 28, Theresa Kanable Strub, was diagnosed with stage 2 stomach and kidney cancer. She is the daughter of Greg and Tina Kanable of Spring Green and showed Registered Holstein cattle for 12 years. She resides in Lone Rock, WI with her husband, daughter and son. A benefit is scheduled for November 2 at Arthur’s Supper Club in Spring Green from 2 p.m.-12 a.m. There will be a raffle, live auction, silent auction and pie auction and food from 4:30-8 p.m. and entertainment. Please come and join the family for this fundraiser for Theresa. K The Jerry & Brenda Yager family would like to express thanks and appreciation for the help from fellow exhibitors during the District 3 Show following the loss of our son and brother, Alex Yager. Obituaries John Klossner
John R. Klossner, age 19, of the rural New Glarus area passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013 at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee following an accident at the Wisconsin State Fair on August 3. He was born on October 8, 1993 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison
to his parents Richard and Roxanne (Reuter) Klossner. John graduated from New Glarus High School in 2012 and was currently a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in Dairy Science. He was an active member of the Badger Dairy Club and AGR at UW. John was an accomplished cattle showman and had won many awards. He was very involved in FFA, 4-H, and Junior Holstein Association activities. John also enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting with his dad. His family was also very important to him including his nieces, brother and sister. John is survived by his parents Richard and Roxanne Klossner, a brother Rory (Nicole) Klossner, sister Kristin Klossner, nieces Olivia and Sydney, and grandmothers Harriet Klossner and Judy Reuter. He is further survived by his aunts and uncles Robin Reuter, Rick (Jennine) Reuter, Rolane (Rick) Kuhnen, Rhonda (David) Kimmel, Barbara (Jerry) Waters, Debbie Stampfli, Dave (Jill) Klossner, and Karen (John) Gierhart, and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers John R. Klossner and Robert E. Reuter, an aunt Belinda Reuter, and a cousin Brittany Reuter. A memorial fund has been established. John Klossner, beloved brother, son, uncle, and friend, left the world far too soon. An incredible & unique individual, his passion for the industry and those around him allowed him to touch the lives of everyone that came to know him. The WI Holstein Association would like to extend condolences to the Klossner family, and thank John for his service to the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association and the Junior Activities Committee. John was an outstanding role model for the youth of Wisconsin, and his leadership will be greatly missed.

They have done a super job transitioning as a new team and providing great events, communications and assistance to our membership. I also want to thank the JACs and Princesses for all of their miles, smiles, work and efforts this summer, you are a great team. Thank you! The Finance Committee met just recently and are happy to report that we are very financially stable half way through our financial year. We've had some great district shows this summer with 1,352 head shown and a super competitive state show with 222 head shown, which is up about 20 head from last year and the most cows we’ve had go through the ring in five years. This summer we board members we’ve been approached with a few different ideas for future state show locations of which we will be discussing in our September board meeting. The
summer shows were topped off with a very well organized and elegant Futurity at the Wisconsin State Fair that shares a peek of our lives as breeders with the public. Thank you to every one of the Siemers family members for hosting our State Holstein Picnic. We appreciate your family and staff going above and beyond in preparation and thoughtfulness to ensure we had top notch hospitality, phenomenal classes to judge and fun! National Holstein Convention 2013 Holstein Association USA Holds 128th Annual Meeting in Indianapolis
Brattleboro, VT: Holstein Association USA members met for their 128th Annual Business Meeting on July 10 and 11, as a part of the 2013 National Holstein Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. President Chuck Worden presided over the meeting, during which members heard reports from the president, CEO and treasurer, discussed current issues relating to the breed and Association, and delegates elected new officers and directors to the board. Meyer, highlighting current Association and industry issues, and discussing where the Association’s sights are set for the future. Worden began by reflecting on the opportunities he has had as an officer of Holstein Association USA to travel the world and see the influence U.S. genetics have on the global Holstein population. “These opportunities gave me the chance to see and understand how our GTPI® has become the ‘gold standard’ for genetic indexes around the world. It also made me realize how many of our friends and allies look up to Holstein USA for leadership.” He continued, “As the largest dairy breed organization in the world, it is up to us to help raise all breed associations up and support their efforts to lead their dairy industries and serve their members. Establishing and maintaining the importance of breed organizations around the world helps strengthen us all.” Addressing the changing dynamics of our industry, Worden stated, “The use of genomics as a selection tool hasn't changed the need to collect large amounts of phenotypic data, but it may change what data is used and the way in which it is collected. We must work to preserve the system we have and find ways to protect our unbiased gold standard. Continuing to improve the quality of all data used in the system will help raise the reliabilities of our genomic predictions.” In his State of the Association address, CEO Meyer highlighted some key areas of Association performance in 2012. “The momentum of steady increases in registrations continues,” Meyer reported. “Registrations totaled 362,669, up 2,520 over 2011 totals. It is interesting to note that ten years ago in 2002, we registered 315,488 head. Because of you and the world’s most profitable cow, the U.S. Registered Holstein®, registrations have increased 47,181 in the last ten years.” Another exciting statistic reported was 2012’s increase in members. “One of the best barometers for measuring the success of a member organization is to look at new membership growth. New adult membership rose by three percent, as we welcomed 629 new adult members, and junior membership increased by eight percent, as 966 juniors joined our ranks. These numbers bode well for the future of this great Association!” Meyer closed on a positive note, saying, “When you get right down to it, the Holstein Association is not just a cow business; it is a people business. The majority of you have gained much more from the Holstein Association than is recorded on the dollar side of your own operation’s ledger or that of your Association. Through the Holstein Association, you have gained friends you may have never met without your common interest in Registered Holstein cattle. New Officers and Directors Elected It was the responsibility of the delegate body to elect new officers and directors to fill six openings on the Holstein Association USA board of directors. Glen E. Brown, Utah, was elected president after completing a two-year term as vice president, and Gordie Cook, Mass., was the successful vice presidential candidate. Holstein Association USA Honors Accomplished Breeders and Industry Icons
Holstein Association USA honored members during the closing banquet on July 11 at the 2013 National Holstein Convention. These award recipients have all worked for the betterment of U.S. Registered Holsteins® and been involved members of the Association. Ryans honored as Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders Chad and Amy Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wis., were honored as Holstein Association USA’s 2013 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders. This award is given annually to a Holstein Association USA member or partnership of members between the ages of 21 and 40, recognizing the significant accomplishments of young Registered Holstein breeders, and their commitment to preserving the dairy industry and achieving excellence in their daily lives. Honorees receive paid travel and lodging expenses to the National Holstein Convention and a $2,000 cash award. Ryan-Vu Holsteins consists of 95 Registered Holstein cows, milked twice a day in their tiestall barn. A Holstein COMPLETE® herd, the Ryans participate in the full spectrum of Holstein Association USA programs, which they feel help add value to their cattle and aid in their marketing efforts. They classify regularly and currently have a BAA of 111.9%, with 45 Excellent cows, 42 scored Very Good and three Good Plus, ranking them second in the nation for their herd size. The farm has received Progressive Breeders Registry™ recognition three years, have five cows who have earned Gold Medal Dam™ honors, and three Dams of Merit™. Chad’s parents, Mark and Mary, are involved with the farm on a daily basis, and Chad and Amy are enjoying introducing their two young sons, Dylan and Cameron, to their dairy farming way of life. Chad and Amy enjoy moderate-sized cows with a balanced combination of dairyness and strength, who are functionally sound and trouble-free. Their ultimate goal for each mating is to develop an Excellent cow who will produce over 200,000 pounds of milk. Thus far, they have had ten cows achieve the 200,000 pound milestone, including an Excellent-92 Maughlin Storm daughter who made over 400,000 pounds of milk in 12 lactations. They believe that working with strong cow families on both sides of the pedigree is key to developing a long-lasting productive herd of cows, and have invested in some of the breed’s greatest cow families, using embryo transfer and IVF to more rapidly grow their herd. Chad and Amy enjoy giving their time to a variety of activities, especially those that involve working with youth. They are coaches of the Fond du Lac county 4-H dairy judging team, and Amy volunteers annually at the International Junior Holstein Show as a ringperson.
Both active with their county and state Holstein Associations, Chad was elected to the Wisconsin Holstein Association board in 2010, and is currently co-chairing both the Midwest Spring National Holstein Show and Scholarship committees. The couple says, “As our sons grow up, we always see Registered Holsteins playing a large role in our future, as we look forward to guiding them and offering them the same opportunities this industry has brought us.”
Holstein Association USA Recognizes Outstanding Junior Breeders
Holstein Association USA recognized several Junior members for their notable accomplishments of breeding and owning high performing Holstein cattle, during the recent National Junior Holstein Convention, July 7-11, in Indianapolis, Ind. Six different awards are distributed based on type and milk production, designed to reward and encourage Junior members to continue achieving high standards in their Registered Holstein breeding programs. Junior Holstein membership is open to any interested youth who is under 21 years of age. National Breeder of an Excellent Cow The Breeder of an Excellent Cow award is presented to Junior members who have bred and owned a cow officially classified Excellent on or after Jan. 1, 2011. National Breeder of a Multiple E Excellent Cow The Breeder of a Multiple E Excellent Cow award is received by Junior members who have bred and owned a cow who has been designated with additional “E’s” throughout her lifetime. Earning this award from Wisconsin was Charles Hamilton. National Junior Progressive Breeder The National Junior Progressive Breeder honor recognizes cattle bred by Junior members that meet high production and classification standards for their age group. Every cow qualifying receives a star and Junior members acquire a star for each cow they have bred which meets the criteria. Those accumulating five or more stars over their career are presented with a plaque during the National Junior Holstein Convention. 2013 is the twentieth year Holstein youth have had the opportunity to apply for this award. Earning their first star are: Jacob Siemers & Joshua Siemers Three-star honorees: Nicole Pralle, and Austin Vandertie Six-star honorees: Jordan Siemers. The Cow Palace at the Fond du Lac Fairgrounds was the location of the 2013 Immel Insurance & Financial Services Holstein Futurity. Seven 5-year-olds were shown. First place went to Gildale Advent Primrose owned by Kayli, Kalista and Kaianne Hodorff & Nicholas Schuster, Eden, Wisconsin. Primrose also took home first place Best Udder and top Junior owned animal of both shows. Best Bred & Owned was Westphalia Advent Angelic owned by Charles Westphal and top production recognition in the 5-year-old class went to Burledge Fortune X-cursion owned by Ray and Rae Nell Halbur First place in the 2-year-old class went to Ragnar Durham SarahET owned by Brandon & Shi Ferry and Kurt & Sarah Loehr. From Your WHA Royalty – Remembering John Klossner John Robert Klossner lived an incredible life, and although short, he had a beautiful ride. John embraced his uniqueness, and it made him magnetic to those around him. With an obsession with Holsteins, hunting, fitting, and SpongeBob, John impacted the lives of so many, in his beautiful 19 years of life. Aside from being a full-time comedian, best friend, a Holstein World connoisseur, and Jared Niemann’s biggest fan, above all - John was a teacher. If there was one thing that we loved more than watching him become great at something, it was watching him share what he knew with anyone that would listen, especially the kids. He taught us countless things that we’ll never let go of. John loved and had so much passion for the ones around him. He loved his family deeply, and, while it’s no secret that John and Kristin had a bond second to none, it is obvious that his sense of humor was nearly all thanks to his big brother, Rory. The two proudest days of John’s life was when Olivia and Sydney were born. John was so excited to be an uncle and even more excited to be a Godfather. John would specifically go matchbox car shopping in the name of beating his 3-year-old niece at racing. John never took mercy on any of his competition, even if they wore pigtails and still drank out of a sippy-cup. John admired his parents the most. He always told us how mama Rox was so amazing, so supportive, so loving. He looked up to his father, and told us several times what a dedicated and humble man he was. He always said his family was “everything he ever could want.” John touched the lives of everyone who came to know him. We both know that at WI Holstein Events, although we could wear a crown all day, John was truly the most loved person there. Kids adored him, whether it was his dry humor, or even his smile and his memorable laugh; no one could compete with John. When we received our titles in January, there was never a brother more proud of his girls. I (Morgan) was so excited to get to spend my year with my big/little brother as we road-tripped across the state as a Princess and JAC. One particular event, lead us to the boonies of Wisconsin - which could only mean cow camp - where midway through our drive, John and I took a break from car karaoke, John’s milk replacer flavored air freshener, and probably most importantly, driving, to stop at a gas station that specialized in three things, none of which being a certain petroleum product. Inside this shack of a gas station were wall to wall dream catchers, wolf statuary, and best of all ‘I love my (insert a dog breed here)’ car magnets. Naturally, we picked the ugliest magnet we could find, a huge glowing poodle with stars in its eyes and saved it for just such an occasion. Meanwhile, back on the bumpiest roads of northern Wisconsin where you can easily go 30 miles without seeing another gas station, our bladders began to expand. When we finally couldn’t take it any longer, we pulled off to a cornfield with a pair of bushes in the middle. As John and I sprinted to our designated bushes, he left me with the wise words of “leaves of three, leave them be!” And, if you’re wondering, John and I did get the satisfaction of watching Nick drive off into the sunset with world’s ugliest car magnet stuck to his tailgate. Because of our time spent together, we were able to learn some valuable life lessons that John lived by. #1 DON’T BE A POSER, BE YOURSELF John wrote, “Posers build their rep on likes and made up stories that happen so differently from the truth, that it makes Osama bin Laden look like a trustworthy guy.” John was never afraid to tell the truth. If he didn’t like something, he’d tell you. For example, you could never convince him to love color breeds. “Jerseys are my kryptonite,” he’d say. John valued the truth, and would never lie to you. He surrounded himself with trustworthy people, and was a great secret-keeper. 16–wisconsin HOLSTEIN news/September 2013
John believed in being himself with no apologies, and thank goodness for that. There is something really special about a friend that is honest enough to look you dead in the eye and call you stupid more than once in a day, and then call you on his home phone that night for three and a half hours just to talk sire summaries and end the conversation with ‘love ya, kid’. John never pretended to be anyone except for himself and that’s something truly irreplaceable. #2 BE A GREAT FRIEND John knew how to make friends, and he was great at it. John always looked forward to meeting new people, and was always down for a good time. He loved each and every one of us, and truly valued his friendships. He was so reliable. He also knew that just because you didn’t show up to the same family reunions, didn’t mean you weren’t family. He really had a special way of adopting people into his life as so much more than just a best friend. Because of John, Taylor and I (Morgan) got to have the brother we always wanted. The one that pushed us around, pulled hair, locked our shoes in safes (and forgot the code), taught us how to properly pair and eat Skittles, get yelled at by hotel management, quote a good movie, greet pizza boys, how to handle a prank call gone wrong, and what in the world a duck fajita is, among so, so, many other applicable life lessons. He didn’t just get the title of “World’s Best Brother;” he earned it. #3 LIVE WITH PASSION John described his show experience in these simple words - “I’m in pain, over-tired, hated and love it all because this is what I do.” John loved what he did, and did it with passion. He’d work for hours on his heifer, Style. My mom (Crystal’s) told John that Style needed to lose weight at the Wisconsin State Show in July. John then told me how he walked her every day, three times a day, washed her every day, and fed her the right feed to get her perfect for the Wisconsin State Fair. He was never afraid of hard work. John knew that opportunity came in the form of hard work, and work hard he did. He’d tackle any project with a smile (well, maybe not with a smile, but he would tackle that project), and go above and beyond what was required all while making everyone around him laugh. It was so, so wonderful being able to watch ringside as John’s dreams came true during this year’s show season, and if anyone ever deserved the whole world, it was John. No friendship is more true than watching your best friend annihilate you in the summer yearling class at county fair and then high-five-ing them on the way back to the barn with a stupid grin on your face. He truly inspired everyone around him, and with his passing, takes a piece of our hearts with him. John was so full of life; he could light up an entire room with his presence. Although he won’t be here to hold our hand, give us encouraging words, or even just talk ridiculously, he will always be here in spirit. Although our friendship was cut much too short, we feel content knowing that we have loved this deeply. Every one of us gained a special angel. So whether you couldn’t pronounce Uncle John, gave him a different middle name, or just called him John, let’s celebrate John’s life the way he would have wanted. Let us never forget to be every bit of ourselves, be the friend you wish you had, and to live with a passion, whatever it may be. In closing, here is one last quote from John: “As of late I have been shown that life is too short to hold grudges, too short to live without all you got. Whether you’re a good friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, new friend or old friend, remember friends come first. There’s no goodbyes, just see you laters.” See you later we will, friend. Comment on the animals that contributed to the winning of this award: When our children turned 9 they were given their choice of a calf on the farm. Our youngest son David (15), chose a heifer out of an EX Charles from our Ginger family. Welsh-Edge Granola is now EX-92 and had had 6 heifer calves (0 bulls!) for David! At the show this year we had Granola and her three oldest daughters: a VG-87 Zenith 4 year old, VG-85 Norman 3 year old and a VG-85 Mystical 2 year old. We feel very blessed to work in the Holstein industry with such great people and cows.

The Dane County Holstein Association has had another exciting and eventful year. The Juniors participated in the Junior Convention held in Janesville this year. The junior dairy bowl team placed second among many very talented teams. Cassie Endres and Lizi Endres both placed second in their respected Dairy Jeopardy contests. There were two Distinguished Junior members from Dane County, Karsen Haag and Macy Sarbacker. In March the annual Dane County Holstein Meeting was held at Rex’s Innkeeper in Waunakee. John Onken was honored with the Bell Award and Kellercrest Holsteins received the Distinguished Breeder award. Lizi Endres and Sarah Griswold were crowned as the 2013 Dane County Holstein Queen and Princess respectively. Finally, June brought the District 6 Holstein Show hosted by Dane County in Stoughton. The show was very successful with over 220 animals parading through the ring from Dane, Green, Kenosha, Rock and Walworth Counties. Thank you to David and Candi Sarbacker who served as chairs for the 2013 District 6 Holstein Show. The Dane County Holstein Picnic will be held on Sunday, September 22 at 12:00 noon at Langer’s Dairy Farm in DeForest. We invite everyone join us to view Langer’s new 60 cow freestall dairy facility housing all of the registered and flush cows, enjoy a meal, judging contest, meeting and door prizes.
District 6 Holstein Futurity
The 12th annual District 6 Holstein Futurity was held June 18 during the District 6 Holstein Show in Stoughton. Area breeders presented cows that were entered in the contest as calves three years ago to earn a percentage of the entry money back as well as one of two cash prizes. Junior Award Forms Due September 15
Wisconsin Holstein has a tremendous group of youth that participate in functions year-round. Junior awards are designed to recognize the state’s outstanding youth for their efforts in the Junior Holstein project. The following award forms are due September 15, 2013. Applicants must be a Junior Member of the State and National Holstein Association by August 15 in the year which the application is made. 12 & Under Member Recognition Any Junior Member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and Holstein Association, U.S.A., Inc., who has been enrolled in dairy project work with Registered Holsteins are eligible to compete in this contest. Applicant must not have reached his or her 13th birthday in this project year. Young Distinguished Junior Member Award This award is given to those members in good standing of the ages of 9 to 16 in the year of application. Any Junior Member of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and Holstein Association, U.S.A., Inc., who has been enrolled in dairy project work with Holsteins is eligible to compete in this contest. Youth completing this form have the option to compete at the national level. The National Holstein Younger Member award is given to those 9-16 as of the January 1. Applicant must not have reached his or her 17th birthday by January 1, 2014. Distinguished Junior Member Award Eligible applicants are any youth that have successfully completed project work with Registered Holsteins and who are a WI Holstein Junior member in good standing. Applicants for WI DJM honors may have reached their 21st birthday in the year of application. Interviews for Wisconsin Outstanding Boy and Girl will be held at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. If chosen for an interview, candidates must bring along a 1-page resume for the judges to review. Interviews take precedence over other Junior Convention activities. The WI National DJM Representatives will be chosen through the interview process to represent WI at the National DJM contest. National DJM applicants must not have reached their 21st birthday by January 1 in the year of recognition. All DJM recipients who are in their last year of eligibility and rank in the top 10 based off their overall score as a National DJM contestant will receive an interview at the WI Junior Holstein Convention to be considered as a WI National DJM Representative.

I hope everyone had a great summer it sure does seem to go by fast when we’re busy and we certainly were busy with all of our WHA activities this summer. This issue is packed full of show results including all of the District Shows, the Wisconsin Championship Show and the first ever joint R&W Championship Show. And we’ll have more results in next month’s issue from the State Fair and WHA Futurity. Next month will also be another Midwest Holsteins issue. This is really a great time to advertise as your ad will be seen by breeders in all five of the upper Midwest states. We will also be taking extra copies of that issue to give away at our booth at World Dairy Expo, so you get even more for your advertising dollars! If you’d like to advertise in the October issue, please give me a call by September 6. Another fun project each year is our annual Breeder Calendar which is also distributed at our booth at World Dairy Expo. This has really become a popular item and people stop by each year to pick up their copy of the WI Holstein calendar. If you would like to be a part of the 2014 Calendar, please give me a call ASAP - months are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Membership renewals will be coming out soon - watch your email’s inbox or mailbox for those notices. If you do not receive anything by mid-October please give Sharon a call at our office. The Wisconsin Holstein community lost a special young man this month. I’ve had the privilege of watching John Klossner grow up in the Junior Holstein Association... from a spirited young kid tagging along with his big sister to all of her Princess events to a JAC leader and role model who was looked up to by so many of our younger members. John left a great impression on all who met him and I’d like to encourage all of our junior members to do their best to follow in his footsteps... we’ll miss you John! Until next time...
